instant messaging the reference librarian at my college

the library at my college has set up an instant messaging account for the reference desk in our main library, so that the reference librarian can field multiple anonymous research assistance requests from anywhere. recently, i've dusted off my copy of ichat and started asking him/her absurd questions as study breaks.

so, this is the thread where i post our conversations, and you can do the same.

lf (lfam), Friday, 5 May 2006 00:15 (nineteen years ago)

lf (lfam), Friday, 5 May 2006 07:31 (nineteen years ago)

i'm thinking of doing one recontextualization of late 60s / early 70s conceptualism every thursday at the same time. try to build an internet relationship. i don't know. i'm going to test different things out every night for a while, i think. i want to try not to let them know that i'm putting them on.

[16:58] sanskritilx: hi dere
[16:58] sanskritilx: quick question
[16:59] ObieRef: shoot
[17:00] sanskritilx: i am doing an honors thesis on the contemporary art world and its interstices with sound art practices
[17:00] sanskritilx: i need to know who is more famous, Momus or Matmos?
[17:01] ObieRef: how do you think that would be measured?
[17:01] sanskritilx: by number of citations in academic journal articles
[17:01] ObieRef: give me a sec
[17:12] ObieRef: sorry its been busy here
[17:12] ObieRef: have you tried searching databases like: Art Abstracts, or ArtBibliographies Modern?
[17:14] sanskritilx: yeah i did, nothing
[17:15] ObieRef: hmm
[17:15] sanskritilx: i just need a rough breakdown, you know, 15,000 articles found for one vs 8,500 articles found for the other
[17:15] ObieRef: I'm trying quick searches in the databases and am not finding much at all
[17:16] ObieRef: you might try a more general database like Academic Search Premier
[17:16] ObieRef: or Readers' Guide Abstracts
[17:16] ObieRef: which cover general interest magazines
[17:17] ObieRef: fame is hard to quantify, obviously
[17:17] sanskritilx: honey, just look it up
[17:18] ObieRef: you can get to those databases from the library homepage
[17:18] ObieRef: also LexisNexis Academic
[17:18] sanskritilx: i can't go to the homepage, i am on 2400 baud
[17:18] sanskritilx: images take forever to load
[17:19] ObieRef: if all you want to do is count "hits"
[17:19] sanskritilx: yeah, JUST hits
[17:19] ObieRef: I can do another quick search but I've got to wrap things up here
[17:19] sanskritilx: WRINKLEPAWSOME
[17:19] ObieRef: I'm supposed to close at 5
[17:19] ObieRef: hold on
[17:19] sanskritilx: thanks
[17:25] ObieRef: I'm sorry, but I'm getting swamped here again
[17:25] ObieRef: I'll be back from 2 to 5 tomorrow afternoon
[17:25] ObieRef: can you come in then?
[17:25] sanskritilx: sure, i'm a gentleman, i'll walk you back to the library in the morning
[17:26] ObieRef: I don't understand
[17:25] sanskritilx: A/S/L?

I agree this is sort of depressing, but funny in a way. I'm all for pretty much harmless, albeit annoying pranks, but isn't there a better target for this than a librarian who is actually really trying to help no matter how absurd the requests get?

You're probably right, but these aren't vicious are they? It's hardly the same as a prank emergency services call where lives may be lost. Is there really this great fear that the findings of books and journals may be delayed and essays may miss deadlines by precious seconds. Unless the individual involved is completely humorless they're hardly gonna be upset by such innocent joshings.

like murderinging (modestmickey), Monday, 8 May 2006 04:23 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, I'm not horribly offended or anything. I can just imagine the librarian maybe getting frustrated with them and killing the service, in which it sucks that a prank ruined a really cool thing (if you're willing to buy that reference librarians on AIM are "cool").

like murderinging (modestmickey), Monday, 8 May 2006 04:24 (nineteen years ago)

I can just imagine the librarian maybe getting frustrated with them and killing the service

ding ding ding.

i mean, i don't know, this just seems about on the same level as the people who call 867-5309 and ask "is jenny there"? funny haha if you're the one doing it, but being on the receiving end is usually boring and annoying and makes you feel like you're being fucked with. and i don't know, if i were that ref librarian i might be really creeped out by the walk-you-home line.

that said, the dinosaur one is kinda funny, though when the guy drops character at the ends it ruins [not makes] the joke for me. i guess that's my problem, i just don't think these IMs are done very well, and i can't imagine the librarian walking away going "that was clever and funny". i've been prank called before and walked away laughing because it was really fucking funny, so it can be done...

lurker #2421, inc. (lurker-2421), Monday, 8 May 2006 13:06 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah and it probably stops having even the potential to be funny - from the librarian's POV - after ooh, twice. But if they've decided to offer a service like that they're probably prepared for it. And you'll get bored after a while, bless.

Given the type of harassment that female librarians in particular often have to put up with from patrons, there's a lot of stuff on here that is extremely obnoxious. Or: vicious or not, a bunch of you are really behaving like inconsiderate assholes.

Also, as a reminder, it's not generally okay to call strangers "ho" any more than it's generally okay to call strangers "n*****". If you've spent a lot of time immersed in the scummier side of hip-hop culture, you may have lost track of that.

Rockist_Scientist (RSLaRue), Monday, 8 May 2006 19:53 (nineteen years ago)

so is this a salaried college staff member or kids doing work studies at the ref desk? the latter might explain the "omg lol" reaction. i imagine that the full time staff members wouldn't be working at 9 pm. if i were a work study kid i'd welcome these ims to pass the time.

tehresa (tehresa), Monday, 8 May 2006 20:36 (nineteen years ago)

I used to work on campus. One time, while working in the candy store, I got a prank phone call using one of those online soundboard things that makes it easy to play a bunch of soundbytes from different movies, celebrities, etc. I didn't recognize whatever "celebrity" it was talking to me, and the soundbytes the person chose made no sense at all for what I said. I told them I knew exactly what was going on and was curious what soundboard it was, but they wouldn't tell me. They just kept repeating meaningless phrases. It was annoying and I hung up and went back to whatever it was I brought to read.

like murderinging (modestmickey), Monday, 8 May 2006 20:39 (nineteen years ago)

As a friend of someone who worked as a reference librarian at a public library, I don't think anyone has even started to approach the level of obnoxiousness that library patrons will dish out in person. Other people (Ned?) can feel free to correct me, though.

mike h. (mike h.), Monday, 8 May 2006 20:42 (nineteen years ago)

Also, as a reminder, it's not generally okay to call strangers "ho" any more than it's generally okay to call strangers "n*****"

actually and honestly i'd say it's somewhere around 60 to 80% more okay to call strangers "ho" than "n****," although i don't know exactly what your "n*****" is because that's got one more letter than the "n****" that i know. but please for the love of god don't make the mistake of trying to type the whole thing out in the process of settling this.

Oh, well a library science grad student is almost a proper librarian, so that would be a bit different.

kingfish doesn't live here anymore (kingfish 2.0), Monday, 8 May 2006 20:55 (nineteen years ago)

It's not hard for me to imagine regular undergrad students working the reference desk during evening hours, as long as they had a small bit of training. In fact, I know that was the case where I went to school.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 8 May 2006 20:57 (nineteen years ago)

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Monday, 8 May 2006 20:57 (nineteen years ago)

See, this is why librarianship is doomed if it wants to be treated on a level other professions. You wouldn't get a legal practice saying: "For legal counsel out of office hours, contact one of our team of kids with a small bit of training."

Alba (Alba), Monday, 8 May 2006 21:01 (nineteen years ago)

Are "kids doing work studies" really allowed to staff library reference desks in US colleges?

they did at mine!

tehresa (tehresa), Monday, 8 May 2006 21:03 (nineteen years ago)

When I worked in a university library (pre-qualification), working with enquiries was the most challenging, favourite part of the librarians' day. They didn't see it as a monotonous desk job.

Alba (Alba), Monday, 8 May 2006 21:03 (nineteen years ago)

The thread-starter did specify that they were "the reference librarian" not someone unqualified.

But I guess to most people anyone who works behind the desk in a library is a librarian, right?

it is standard for work-study students in the US to work in libraries checking out books, etc. whether they work as reference librarians I can't say.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Monday, 8 May 2006 21:11 (nineteen years ago)

Checking out books, sure. That's a clerical task. Library assistants do it everywhere.

Alba (Alba), Monday, 8 May 2006 21:14 (nineteen years ago)

perhaps the person using messenger relays more complex requests to the actual reference librarian? or is there to act as a buffer between the actual reference librarian and, say, ILX?

gabbneb (gabbneb), Monday, 8 May 2006 21:26 (nineteen years ago)

Some of the library science grad students here had to put some time in at the reference desk before graduating, I think.

At any rate, they would usually take the late-night shifts and were the only ones working reference.

Maybe Nabisco can come along and explain (without self-defeating digressions) why it's not a good idea to call people working in public service positions "ho" (which--really!--some women still do find offensive), why making stalker-like comments to the same people ("sure, i'm a gentleman, i'll walk you back to the library in the morning") is a problem, and how there's a power issue involved in toying with someone who is supposed to be polite and keep the public happy.

And if the justification really is "this should brighten those poor, bored librarian's dreary days!" rather than just being backwards posturing, then at least try to say something that would make sense to them. ath's in my opinion was the funniest, despite being somewhat insensitive, because the joke was something the librarian could actually understand. Other than sanskrit's football one, which was pretty funny, the others were just regurgitated ILX memes. I don't think they're funny here anymore, not even in an appropriate context, but when thrown in the face of someone completely clueless, they're even less amusing.

there's a power issue involved in toying with someone who is supposed to be polite and keep the public happy

again, ding ding ding. the whole reason this thing is such a jerkoff is that you're messing with people who would, at least half the time, LOVE to be able to tell you "hey, you know what, go fuck yourself."

i mean, what, do you think they're stupid? they KNOW you're pranking them, but they're obliged to pretend otherwise because in many cases, guess what, they need their job and they need the money and they can't hit back the way they'd like to, because they'd get fired. if you actually manage to be funny, and to include them in the joke in a way that works, great. otherwise, though, you're basically about on the same level as homer simpson fucking with the amish.

and yes, i think it's incredibly stupid and creepy to call them a "ho" or to A/S/L them or talk about going home with them. no amount of race-baiting -- on anyone's part -- will change that. sorry, there are far too many women out there who've been raped and molested to make that kind of bullshit roffleicious.

(though actually:

"Library workers have been, and will continue to be, mostly female...In 2004, women accounted for 83.2% of all librarians, 83.2% of all library assistants, and the vast majority of library technicians.")

but you know, if you think IMing a (potential!) woman anonymously and calling her a ho and telling her you're going to walk her back to work in the morning (after you've fucked her, that is) -- especially if you know exactly where that woman physically is, and could easily track her down (and she knows this) -- well, by all means, go for it. buy yourself a coke.

lurker #2421 i knew it wasn't appropriate to harass oberlin college reference librarians and i won't do it any more. my girlfriend saw what i was typing, though, and she laughed and didn't think it was a bad idea. she's the same person who got on my case for laughing at that "ann coulter gets fucked in the ass, hard" fan-fic piece, which i thought was funny but then afterwards realized that it wasn't "fair" because it retaliated against a woman's offensive politics with sexual degradation, kind of like how republicans would respond to hilary clinton's politics with jokes about thick thighs, etc.

this is different, though, and i think you're overreacting. you don't need to remind "the boys" that women are raped and molested. the librarian never gave any indication that she (or he) was offended. they kept trying to help me, even adapting the funkee prince-ism of a "4" where "for" was the more library-suitable alternative. i didn't detect anything foul; i would have stopped if i did. the concept of lil jon at a reference desk was funny to me at the time, but of course it seems stupid and embarassing to have gone for that LOL now, after we've completely deconstructed the socio-political engineering behind the roffles.

I don't think this is the same thing, but it's worth mentioning.

I'm a waiter. There's these two guys who always come in. They're in their 40's or 50's, and they're a gay couple. I'm not gay. I served them one time, and since then, they constantly come in and flirt with me. They've tried numerous times to get me to go home with them. No matter how many times I've tried to let them know that I'm not interested, they keep coming in, and they keep giving me notes.

And no matter how utterly disgusted I am, and to what extent it bothers me, I have to stand there and make polite small talk with them when they stop me, despite the management knowing the situation. I actually got in a pretty big argument with one of the managers on this very thing a few weeks ago.

RJG, I feel bad for mentioning you in the "least funny" thread, because some of the joykillers in this thread are infinitely less funny than you.

melton mowbray's APOCALYPTO! (adr), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 14:57 (nineteen years ago)

don't worry about it

looking at threads you've posted on, I don't think you're very funny either!

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 15:05 (nineteen years ago)

This whole thread reads like that Armando Ianucci parody of shit (ie, all of them) prank callers:

"Are you the owner of the large brick car parked outside Broadcasting House?"
"You're through to British Telecom"
"Oh, I'm ever so sorry.. sorry.. bye"

"Ha ha, classic call!"

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 15:08 (nineteen years ago)

It depends on the library whether the Internet reference is a professional or a student. A couple of students in my classes say that they worked on Internet reference when they were just college students. Most likely, if they get a question they can not handle, they would encourage the student to come in to the library. I don't think AIM leads itself to a very in-depth reference interview--probably better suited to quick directional and factual questions.

Behind the reference desk, it is more likely to be at least one librarian, maybe with other non librarians as well. Except in my job, in the kid's department, we are about half librarians and half not, and we alternate on the desk, except for at evenings--when there is always a librarian. Everyone just assumes we are all librarians, because no one really thinks about what is involved or not involved in being a librarian, besides the people who work at a library. Even when I worked at the circulation desk, most patrons referred to me as a librarian.

gbx (skowly), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 16:39 (nineteen years ago)

No, none of this rings true. How would you like it if you were a librarian, didn't laugh at this shit, and then some anonymous cowardly asshole said that he or she 'had sand in their vagina'? Do you realize how much harassment and creepiness library employees put up with?

Thinking your juvenile, hostile and exploitative - not to mention SPOILED - does not indicate that one objectively has 'sand in their vagina'. In other words, just because someone doesn't think you are funny doesn't mean they don't have a sense of humor.

Entitlement? That shit was funny! I'm not about to perpetrate it myself, mind you.

Sorry, librarians must have buns and bifocals and are not to have any part in larfs and anyone who lols must be a little kid. (I'll be 40 in a couple of weeks)

Maria :D (Maria D.), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 16:42 (nineteen years ago)

For a second I thought that might have been the librarian, but then I realized a librarian would know the proper usage of "your/you're".

Young Fresh Danny D (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 16:44 (nineteen years ago)

Fuck off. When a bunch of frat-rapist juveniles don't think your harassment is funny, they have buns in their hair etc.

Listen, bitch - it's not funny when you put up with harassment and creeps every day. Do you understand what work is, or do you think you're above ever having to "serve" the public?

You're wasting someone's time, and ridiculing them behind their back. How that isn't hostile and juvenile is beyond me.

x-post - When you intentionally waste someone's time to garner your own personal "laffs", you are being intimidating and offensive. You are being exploitative and not respecting people's work. You are wasting someone's time.

People in libraries deal with this 'oh, I'm not being threatening, oh no' cowardly behavior all the time.

Were you looking for the "I hate young people; they're so spoiled and entitled" thread? If you really are a librarian, maybe you should change career paths with that youth-hating, public-hating hypersensitivity.

Anyway, you're getting really mad at us for laughing at something that happened last May.

I'm wondering What Would Ned Do? If he got some prankish IMs while at work, would it enrage him?

Maria :D (Maria D.), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 16:54 (nineteen years ago)

Ah, the testimonial. I mean, since you're all so 'college-educated' and all, I'm sure you know that one from Propaganda 101.

Listen, I've worked with a number of people who've had stalkers. There's a tense situation in some libraries. It's not funny, then, when people ask you bullshit questions and try to get you to 'dance' for them. It's exploitative- intentionally so. You're treating the person on the other end as if they're not human.
