well, the thing is, i don't think you need them to be all that non-descript e.g. Ving Rhames is great in his role, which is admittedly just being a Ving Rhames-type incarnated as an operative. There's plenty of value in a well-contructed team of folks doing something; like a semi-crazy helicopter pilot, a tough mechanic/driver/demolitions expert, a smooth-talkin' chameleon/covert ops type, and a cigar-chomping leader who loves it when a plan comes together.
For instance.

A) it stared and was produced tom cruise
B) it was the third part in a franchise where ultimately very little can change between films (bar the love interests of course)
C)i haven't seen 24 which from my limited knowledge of this seemed to bare a passing resemblence too

Of course much redundancy if you have seen the first two series of both 24 and Alias, and was kind of like True Lies without the misjudged gags (so in that way a lot better). Also, it might be a lot like TV series, BUT IS A FILM with plus and minuses of that.

Its a cop out because they didn't show the theft. if its the ordinary part of a heist sequence.. well make it EXTRAordinary. the screenwriter's couldn't think of an interesting way to do it, so they decided that the interesting way to do it would be to not show it. I say thats a cop out.
Not a totally unsastifying cop out because the movie moves from good scene (rooftop swinging and shootout), slight lull in action while team waits in van, to good scene (parachuting stuff) that seems more exciting because of previous lull. But it was a missed opportunity that I as a audience member might have liked to see. Of course, I seem to be in the minority on that point.
― brontosaur (brontosaur), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 21:08 (nineteen years ago)
i liked the shorthand of not showing the heist. it was great at keeping the tension up as the audience is waiting around w/ the IMF crew, not knowing exactly what's going on inside. I thought that it was one of the moments of economy in flick, since we didn't need to seen more heisty stuff(the Vatican took care of that), and as i mentioned, the tension was kept just by helplessly waiting outside.
some of the things that pissed me off was usual Action Movie Stupidity(i.e. a defib that took 30 secs to charge, the team apparently not having the ability to close a huey door, using a defib on your head i accept, using 3-phase 220V power lines, less so, etc)
The chopper chase thru a field of windmills was a great setpiece.
you can tell when tom is Acting becuase he tries very, VERY hard to turn on the "intense."
i was happy that the asian chick didn't have to be Stock Asian Chick.
billy crudup looks weird w/ short hair.
they did the Collateral thing of occasionally switching to green-tinged DV whenever something Dramatic or Actiony was about to happen. Lots of off-center, semi-shakey extreme close-ups, too.
Anybody get a "Escape from NY" vibe of the hero w/ ticking bomb in his head that can only be deactivated with two paddles injecting a charge?
― kingfish doesn't live here anymore (kingfish 2.0), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 21:18 (nineteen years ago)
I liked it a lot, but it felt endless at times because everything was telegraphed so far ahead, and some of the action pieces could have been shorter. I wish action directors would chop a few minutes off of each setpiece, you really wouldn't notice it, but the movies would be paced so much better.
The team was awesome, Seymour Hoffman was awesome, Cruise was about as good as he always is.

Its still a cop-out though. You haven't exactly refuted that point, you're just calling it by a different name. As an in-the-moment audience member I went right along with the whole thing. No doubt about it, it was well done. It was only afterwards, when discussing it that it really bugged me.
x-post in MI3 i think its more like 2-5 minutes of a heist that wasn't shown.
and i think O12 is mostly a movie about watching good looking people be charming and stylish. and it works on that level. as a heist movie.. not so much.

Action Movie Audience goes to see Action Movie to see Action Movie Shit. Action Movie Director decides to pass up perfectly good opportunity to show Audience some Action Movie Shit in order to show... less Action Movie Shit. Its not a matter of seeing everything that takes place during the time period. Its about seeing every Action Moment that Action Movie Star gets involved in.
Its not a cop-out because someone was afraid (what does making an action movie have to do with courage?) to put it in there, its a cop-out because someone was too lazy/unimaginative/unskilled to put it in there.

― milo z (mlp), Thursday, 11 May 2006 19:00 (nineteen years ago)
And the moments of satisfaction are mutually exclusive because the present moment of satisfaction is derived from the absence of the other scene. You could still have everthing that is shown in the movie, there should just be a scene before that scene showing the Heist.

-Helicopter chase through windmills was asinine. They are in HELICOPTERS, fly ABOVE the blades. Also, how did they get from Germany to the windmill farm in Tehachapi so damn fast? Note to filmmakers - don't use an easily recognizable landmark and say it's somewhere other than where it is.
-Hooray for Simon Pegg! When's the next Shawn Of The Dead movie?
-The most unbelieveable part of the movie wasn't Cruise, the action scenes, or the over-reliance on masks. It was Keri Russell as superagent Felicity "I couldn't find a guy at NYU so I'll join the CIA."
-Abrams didn't appear to take advantage of film all that well. Much of it was framed like a TV show.
-There's a mole in the organization? This is only the plot of every episode of Alias ever.
-Vatican scene was exceptionally well done. Felt like a different movie all of a sudden. The bridge scene was also great, but like the windmill scene Cruise could have just run around to the half of the bridge that wasn't missing instead of wasting our time by jumping across.
-I like the no-show of the heist too. Reminded me of that Neal Stephenson chapter that ends "everything else was just a chase scene." Negative points for the ridiculous line about "it's the prayer I used for my cat to come home" though.
― LOL Thomas (Chris Barrus), Monday, 15 May 2006 06:22 (nineteen years ago)
When I heard Abrams, those were two things I was expecting, and he delivered.
Helicopter chase through windmills was asinine. They are in HELICOPTERS, fly ABOVE the blades.
The helicopter being chased was "trynna lose 'em" among the windmill blades, and I loved the way they established that the windmill blades were massive and threatening before they had a helicopter run into one of 'em. Pretty great scene, actually.

I agree that the wind farm scene wasn't all that hot, but who cares if the wind farm was actually in CA. This is an American movie. If we can export our pop culture, we can export our disdain for geography. For M:I:X, I hope a computer-generated Tom Cruise jumps from the top of the Eiffel Tower onto the Kremlin. California? Is that the one shaped like a boot, or the one that invented clocks?

What, they don't fall over when they are struck by missiles that just missed the good guys, and their blades don't blow up bad guy hellicopters? 'Cause that was the important part. I'm pretty sure they work that way when TOM CRUISE IS KICKING ASS.
Besides, these are German windmills. Didn't the Germans invent them to run their dikes in La Mancha? I suppose you think think THEY DON"T KNOW HOW TO BUILD COPTER KILLING MACHINES IN LA MANCHA.

Musgrave: I thought you could get her back. But I wasn't going to let all people, to let Brassel to undo the work I've done. I took action, Ethan. On the behalf of all working families of America, the Army force, the white house. I've had enough of Brassel and his sanctimony. IMF director, he's an affirmative action poster boy. You grabbed Davian like he wanted, then what? Davian is a weed. You cut him down and two more springs he's just like the next day. Arrest him, then what? You use him. Collaborate with him. Then it's Christmas. In 18 hours, the Rabbit's foot will be sent to its Middle East buyer, we've got the Intel to prove that. Then the UN counsil will have an emergency meeting, we're taking a military strike in a week. Then when the sand settles, our country will do what it does best: cleaning-up, infrastructure, democracy wins.

"Mission: Impossible IV," which once seemed truly impossible, is taking shape at Paramount.Tom Cruise and J.J. Abrams have agreed to co-produce the sequel, which is aimed at a 2011 release. The return of Cruise to Par itself is surprising in view of the circumstances surrounding his departure in August 2006. Apparently irked by the heft of Cruise’s deal, among other issues, Viacom chief Sumner Redstone abruptly terminated the 14-year relationship between the star and the studio. Cruise’s then-CAA agent, Rick Nicita, termed Redstone’s decision “shockingly offensive and graceless.”The rift led to Cruise becoming the chief of United Artists and taking a more active role in production decisions. Redstone, meanwhile, has sought to heal the relationship. At a recent appearance, he described the star as “a great actor and a good friend.”The “Mission” installment would augment Paramount’s formidable array of sequels, which will include “Star Trek 2” and a third “Transformers.”Work on “Mission: Impossible IV” would inevitably be delayed by the busy schedules of the participants.Abrams will be responsible for guiding the “Star Trek” sequel, while Cruise recently committed to an untitled pic (formerly called “Wichita”) for 20th Century Fox that will be directed by James Mangold and co-star Cameron Diaz.

MI4 is the best in the series by a country mile, i dont think ive enjoyed a hwood action movie this much in a few years
perfectly paced, the dubai sequence - from the tower scaling to the meetings to the sandstorm chase - was really remarkable. bird's a natural storyteller. the tower climb was terrifying in IMAX, i was grippin my arm rests for dear life the entire time.
there's a lot of nitpicks to be made, but again the pacing is so good that they mostly don't occur to you until the movie's over. the villain didnt amount to much, but that was fine because the focus of the movie was on the team itself (its truer to the show than any of the other movies, in that respect) and the tension comes from what i guess you would call the escalating circumstances - everything going totally wrong at every turn, forcing them to work as a team and think laterally.
movie had exactly the right tone too. fun and freewheeling without crossing the line into cornball or undercutting the tension. it was a good change of pace from the overdetermined seriousness of the previous 2 flicks. pegg was pretty funny imo
― maghrib is back (Hungry4Ass), Tuesday, 3 January 2012 18:20 (thirteen years ago)
i agree that the process-stuff of figuring out solutions to things was excellently done
i was also really struck by the beauty and quiet of the sandstorm foot chase, and the screenwriterly humor of having his goggles for it
the lightness of tone and the very movie-ness of the villain didn't really do it for me, but i did get a kick out of nyqvist's taped speech in favor of nuclear war

one thing i thought was incredibly dopey but sorta charming were the hokey music cues, like in an old cartoon where they'd play the oriental riff if the setting was asian. so you get this booming tetris music in russia, and in mumbai its suddenly some bollywood thing with the MI theme mixed in a little. real saturday morning cartoon stuff

The number of critics beating the "see this in IMAX!!!!" drum (universal, really) almost convinced me, but thankfully a) I had these flashbacks to the "OMG! Avatar!" hype and b) my go-to-the-IMAX bud backed out due to his primal aversion to Tom Cruise. Dunno if I'l get around to seeing this at all.

― Nicole, Wednesday, 4 January 2012 01:30 (thirteen years ago)
i thought this was pretty good. i liked that it had lots of throwbacks to the first mission impossible (which is still much better than this) even though it tried to 'fix' what was supposedly wrong w/ the first one -- like having the plot carefully explained to the audience through unnecessary exposition from characters.
also the actors in this don't touch the incredible character acting from jean reno or ving rhames or jon voigt or vanessa redgrave
and my final criticism was that a lot of times the fight sequences went on far too long -- the suspense set-ups and that sort of thing were great, but the parking garage scene didn't make use of the garage set-up the way it could have, and there's nothing cheaper than when they repeatedly bang the main character's head against things
but despite these drawbacks i really liked this. saw in IMAX, was def worth it.
― I Love Pedantry (D-40), Tuesday, 17 January 2012 11:23 (thirteen years ago)
So this was serviceable. So this is Cruise's first huge hit since WOTW, right? Dunno how it's any better than the others, which weren't bad (I liked the first one well enough; the Vanessa Redgrave-Cruise exchanges are the only convincing sexy male-female exchanges in any Cruise film).
― Exile in lolville (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 17 April 2012 23:47 (thirteen years ago)
I dont know what it is about that first MI movie but it's one of the few cruise flicks where he seems comfortable in his own skin. maybe it's the de palma touch, but he never makes your skin crawl with the way he can put so much effort into his 'acting' and still not resemble a human being. re: mi4 I really like how he has seemingly grown into a deadpan too-old-for-this-shit persona, it suits him & i thought it was a really good 'star' performance
― these pretzels are makeing me horney (Hungry4Ass), Wednesday, 18 April 2012 00:06 (thirteen years ago)

I watched the first Mission: Impossible, the DePalma one, recently. They really took the "impossible" part more literally, in that I don't think half the things in the film are in any way physically possible. The newer films are more "Mission: Very Highly Improbable" in comparison.
It was also painfully obvious that it wasn't yet a Tom Cruise franchise at that point, as all the team mission bits felt like a team effort, not just a handful of people doing specific tasks enabling him to succeed in the one important thing. I think that's what I didn't buy about the last one -- you're supposed to care about wtf Renner's character is worried about, but any time Cruise is on screen the camera gravitates toward him.
― your native bacon (mh), Tuesday, 21 August 2012 14:22 (thirteen years ago)
you're supposed to care about wtf Renner's character is worried about
I don't know that this is ever the case in any film Renner's in! Tho I haven't seen him as Bourne, jr.
― Andrew Farrell, Tuesday, 21 August 2012 15:39 (thirteen years ago)
I feel kind of sorry for the guy, he keeps getting stuck with roles where you don't really care about his character's motivation. In MI4 his goal is to... keep it together and succeed while not feeling like a bad person? In the Bourne one his role is to survive, but only because Bourne triggered the manhunt. His plot arc is literally that he is trying to survive and somehow not lose his intelligence.

PSH was the best villain, wish he was in more of the movie
― Matt Armstrong, Saturday, 27 October 2012 23:46 (twelve years ago)
the villains are pretty forgettable in a lot of ways, I guess psh was the only one who was a more formulaic (not a negative) charismatic action movie villain.
― sug ones (omar little), Sunday, 28 October 2012 00:37 (twelve years ago)
the villain in 4 is not believable at all. PSH was properly detestable.

I think 1 is pretty tight but voight is a little ridiculous in the role. his character's scheme is so half-assed.

― max, Sunday, 28 October 2012 16:00 (twelve years ago)
1 seems really ridiculous if you watch it now. I know it's Mission Impossible, but the entire helicopter in a train tunnel sequence is silly.

i actually give cruise a lot of credit for that, he usually knows to try and work with the right people
1 is a movie that i wasnt sure would still hold up (i used to love the Untouchables too but blegh now), but its still a good time. my favorite scene is actually the restaurant conversation between cruise and henry czerny (that guy's criminally underused) that ends with the exploding fishtank. so tense! so de palma!
― turds (Hungry4Ass), Sunday, 28 October 2012 16:40 (twelve years ago)
Despite being all Abrams-ish I liked 3
― d-_-b (mh), Sunday, 28 October 2012 16:41 (twelve years ago)
yeah absolutely, cruise made the right moves to make 3 and 4 good, and did it w/out just trying to bourne-ify the movies a la bond
― max, Sunday, 28 October 2012 16:46 (twelve years ago)
3 is cool. love hoffman in it, but fishburn gets to have a lot of fun too. so does billy crudup! i enjoyed the attempt to make it a more emotional/personal story. mi2 sorta tried that too but it just didn't work; woo's style of taking small moments and dragging them out in an infinity of slo-mo and furrowed brows was torturous when applied to scenes/relationships we dont care about. and his action got pg13'd, clearly for the worse. apparently there was like a 3 1/2 hour cut which i would perversely love to see, even though More Movie is the last thing mi2 needed.

i really wanted to like rogue nation (i love this series! i loved jack reacher) but i didn't :((((((( like why do u have the most up for doing his own stunts leading man of all time and have the main set piece be obviously cgi....why do the stakes feel so low....why is the car chase 4x less exciting than jack reacher...why isn't having a compelling villain a priority for movies like this...every scene with alec baldwin and/or jeremy renner could have been excised...idgi guys
― slam dunk, Sunday, 2 August 2015 02:40 (ten years ago)
wow i might've loved it as much or more than Reacher, which i saw multiple times in the theater... it doesnt beautifully skirt that ridiculous/awesome line which is what gets me hooting thru most of Reacher, but its got more heart... McQ's made 2 of my favorite action movies of the last decade at this point
― Hungry4Ass, Sunday, 2 August 2015 16:29 (ten years ago)
i loved that mcquarrie couldnt resist reacherfying Ethan Hunt a little... not too much, but that alec baldwin speech about him being the living manifestation of destiny, so perfect, so reacher. at the same time it keeps rolling with that weary/humble angle on EH that they had in Ghost Protocol and which blends really well with cruise's intensity & charisma, he's never been more likable than in these last 2 m:i's
― Hungry4Ass, Sunday, 2 August 2015 16:41 (ten years ago)
I just rewatched 1 and saw 2-4 for the first time over the past week. I didn't remember much caring for the first one at the time (which is most of the reason I never saw the others, and I think I may have unfairly lumped it in with De Palma's lackluster mid-'90s stretch of films) but it was quite good. If I'd seen 2 at the time, though, it would've likely ended my interest in the series just as decisively as it was quite bad. It could've just as easily been a parody of a Woo film (all of his signifiers, poorly and laughably employed). 3 and 4 were pretty great junk, though. I'm glad they finally put the emphasis back on the team dynamics in 4 and I hope it carries over into the new one.

as antagonists go i'd have this guy only behind hoffman (or voight in the first one but the first one is kind of an outlier in that there isnt' a big bad they're going against, the antagonist isn't apparent until nearly the end)(loved the callout to the breakin in the first one in this one also). also liked out he went out more than any of the others, the sheer animal hate and contempt, more satisfying than hoffman getting taken out by a car or dude falling down a garage.

it's kind of amazing how this series seems to fly under the radar, there's just so much noise out there about so many franchises and reboots and this just keeps on trucking and making money without making a huge splash anymore. it manages to add new characters and it still doesn't feel too overcrowded (probably bc they also cut loose a few characters when needed.) i can't think of another series that has essentially gone as long as this where the first three films are (possibly!) inferior to the next three. i'm making a major assumption on FALLOUT based on the above alone, but the skill with which 4 & 5 were executed gives me good cause for optimism.

MI is definitely, inarguably superior overall to the bond movies made over the same period, there's no question (though Casino Royale is the best single film)
― Simon H., Tuesday, 6 February 2018 20:00 (seven years ago)
MI1 is an extremely good cold-blooded DePalma action movie but my enjoyment of it is more objective than subjective.
MI2 is a ridiculous movie which is kind of amazing, I actually remember hardly anything about it other than being somewhat bored and somewhat impressed by the full Woo treatment and how it failed w/that material.
MI3 felt kind of cheap to me for some reason. I never like to dis films for seeming like TV shows but it felt like a very special episode of Alias. However I did LIKE it.

Tom Cruise has this career spot now where he's either a superhuman in action films who is unbothered by normal human concerns (MI, Jack Reacher) or a self-questioning protagonist who has to find a fundamental truth in a science fiction film (Oblivion, Edge of Tomorrow) and it's pretty funny.

― Alderweireld Horses (darraghmac), Tuesday, 6 February 2018 21:29 (seven years ago)
imo you could start with any of them as long as you grasp the basic premise
― mh, Tuesday, 6 February 2018 21:31 (seven years ago)
imo the thing that's the most wild about the second one, other than it being a misfire in tone, is that Dougray Scott was stuck on the set because the production went long, and was replaced by Hugh Jackman in the X-Men film
― mh, Tuesday, 6 February 2018 21:34 (seven years ago)
lots of opinions today, sorry lads
i tend to think of the first three as standalone films in a way, they all present vv different Ethan Hunts and they're each in service to the style of the director (DePalma's more Hitchcockian flair, Woo's OTT doves and duality thing, JJ Abrams' expensive TV pilot trademark) whereas 4 and 5 feel a bit more in line w/each other and 6 feels like the first direct sequel to the previous installment.
i would start w/4 tbh (not a judgement on the first three, not completely, i just prefer the last couple.)
― omar little, Tuesday, 6 February 2018 21:36 (seven years ago)
Dougray Scott i actually think was extremely good in MI2, he made for a vv good despicable villain. he'd probably have rather ended up with Hugh Jackman's career obv.
― omar little, Tuesday, 6 February 2018 21:38 (seven years ago)
most definitely
ironically, of the three, Tom Cruise is the only one with the right height to play Wolverine as envisioned in comics
― mh, Tuesday, 6 February 2018 21:44 (seven years ago)
as long as you grasp the basic premise
my sense of the basic M:I premise is that it aligns with the usual premise of spy/cloak and dagger entertainments, which is that the viewer has entered a fantastic world that superficially resembles current reality, but where no rules apply, the villains have limitless ambitions and resources, and the heroes have almost as few constraints as the villains do, because as ever, the world hangs in the balance. the good guys always win, but the outcome is in doubt to the final moments.
that about right?

ghost protocol is fine, but it has all kind of inverted emphasis.typically the weird stunts and physical stuff are supposed to be in service of the caper part, and the most memorable action scenes to me are the cars falling at the end, cruise doing all kinds of acrobatics to get out of jail. neither of which is directly caper-related!
the actual caper parts are like trying to distract the indian businessman and slowly rolling a decoy rig through a hallway

I am sold on the fact that one of the trailers for the new one has an extended reel of Tom Cruise falling off of things, running into things, failing to jump on to things, and getting hit by vehicles. This is what I want.

Would watch 2.5 hours of Tom Cruise in freefall, just occasionally ricocheting off of things.

― Number None, Tuesday, 24 July 2018 16:41 (seven years ago)
Rogue Nation by a very slight amount over Ghost Protocol, Rebecca Ferguson tips the scales.
McQuarrie is an exceptionally good director now, it’s kind of amazing how good he’s wound up being at these films and even moreso considering his career was looking finished in the post-Way of the Gun/pre-Jack Reacher era. Valkyrie and The Tourist not exactly inspiring as the only credits to hold down the dozen years between.
― omar little, Tuesday, 24 July 2018 16:44 (seven years ago)
Oh and I guess the "personal" angle was considered novel, even though it was a totally unnecessary route for the franchise to go down
― Number None, Tuesday, 24 July 2018 16:45 (seven years ago)
MI:3 feels vv slight, feels like you could plug Jennifer Garner in there and make it an Alias reunion TV movie.
― omar little, Tuesday, 24 July 2018 16:46 (seven years ago)
That does slightly neglect McQuarrie's role as fixer on almost every Cruise project, although we're obviously not privy to the specifics of that role

Ethan Hunt's chronic inability to stay in vehicles or on top of buildings and concomitant hyper-facility wrt correcting for his incessant falling and flailing is kind of like that thing where in gym class I was amazing at dodging the ball and was always the last one left on my team but couldn't actually hit anyone with a dodgeball if my life depended on it.
― Hi My father very Rusted Root with me what can I do? (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 24 July 2018 17:02 (seven years ago)
I remember liking the De Palma one at the time, despite not remembering anything much about it now beyond the pair of opening and closing set pieces.
I remember disliking the Abrams at the time, even though I remember even less about it now. It's funny to hear that people overrated it on the basis of Hoffman's performance, because I recall him being under-utilized.
The Bird film is the best pure action movie I've seen in decades--a statement that would probably carry more weight if I watched more current action flicks. Beautiful, elegant, and inventive--the antithesis of the pummelling Michael Bay style that largely keeps me away from the genre these days.
Haven't seen the others. Is there any real continuity to the series, or are they basically Bond films: separate adventure stories with the occasional callbacks to characters and incidents from prior entries?
― Police, Academy (cryptosicko), Tuesday, 24 July 2018 17:12 (seven years ago)
There are some throughlines in the recent ones, which apparently carry through in a fairly pronounced way in the new one.
― wayne trotsky (Simon H.), Tuesday, 24 July 2018 17:14 (seven years ago)
The first three are basically standalone films more in the traditional Bond sense, zero callbacks to the other films unless you count the carryover presence of Ving Rhames. The Hunt character is completely different in each film too. Going from ice cold agent to hot blooded loverman action guy to put upon domesticated Abrams hero.
The last two and presumably the new one have more carryover and seem more consistent. It’s virtually a separate trilogy and a total reboot.
― omar little, Tuesday, 24 July 2018 17:18 (seven years ago)
I think PSH being underutilized added to it. That's the one thing Abrams does OK if he sticks to it -- having villains that seem genuinely intimidating as long as he doesn't have them on the screen too long. He overplays it half the time!
So uh the Abrams movie is basically him doing a more concise first season of Alias, can anyone really disagree
― mh, Tuesday, 24 July 2018 17:22 (seven years ago)
I'm really mixed on whether I think having the wife character (played by Michelle Monaghan) reappear is a good idea. Depends on how they play it, but I thought the somewhat write-off in Ghost Protocol was a good idea but, at the same time, the reveal felt like dead weight in the plot
― mh, Tuesday, 24 July 2018 17:24 (seven years ago)
oh man, from the wikipedia article on MI3, after they explain the revolving door of directors/writers they went through:
After a dispute over the film's tone, Carnahan quit in July 2004. Tom Cruise then called J. J. Abrams, offering the directorial role for the film after having binge-watched the first two seasons of Alias.
― mh, Tuesday, 24 July 2018 17:28 (seven years ago)

Carnahan regrets that cinemagoers never got to see his version. He says, “Were we going to do something that would have kicked the s**t out of the movie they wound up doing?“Absolutely. I’m not even going to shy away from that. I know the film we made was going to be better because I thought it was important. And the movie we were making was about private military and what’s going on in Africa.“I had Kenneth Branagh playing a guy who’s based on Timothy McVeigh. And I think the cast that we had–Ken, Carrie-Anne Moss, Scarlett Johansson–that’s the biggest heartbreak for me because I saw how amazing they would have been.“If you would have seen Carrie-Anne Moss move with a handgun after a month and a half, it would have blown your mind.“And we had flat-out the two best mask reveals in the franchise history. Like those mask pulls dealt with major plot stuff. They weren’t just these cartoony things.”

MI2 has major issues but at least it looks major-scale.
it's especially noticeable when you're watching all of them bc the rest of the movies are p beautiful and have outstanding individual shots (the scene of kristin scott thomas wandering through the blue fog in the first one knocked me out recently and i've seen that movie a million times bc i was obsessed with it as a kid.) mi3 has the color palette of quake 1

PSH coasts in MI3. He’s pretty memorable but also very much the type of bad guy who lasts on episode of a TV show. Which is what that movie felt like anyway.
Most memorable villains probably the three headed monster of Voight/Redgrave/Reno in the first one.

it all but winks at you if you were on board with the last two, it whispers "oh, i *dare* you to declare it silly at this late stage" pretty much throughout. hugely irreverent imo
felt v much like a 60s/70s tv show (maybe not ~the~ tv show) at times in pacing and setup.
and not just for henry cavill's presence, but parts felt a bit like the man from uncle remake, the bits that worked like.
packed a lot of action in- a. lot. it should have suffered from fatigue but our audience at least was still jumping at the last few bashes and crashes
cross, swap, misdirection, double cross, triple cross, wait is the next twist what i thought it was, tons of that
i think it did an expert job of letting you see the next twist before the big reveal- three or four times throughout- so that even first time around you can enjoy the tells and double meanings
too long, got both too serious and too ridiculous in the final scenario, serious lack of coherent bad guys, no need at all for monaghan, id put it between iii and iv in a ranking

― wayne trotsky (Simon H.), Saturday, 28 July 2018 23:48 (seven years ago)
this would not be the case if the movies weren't so obviously paper-thin beyond serving as a vehicle for Cruise/Hunt's awesomeness, but they are. and that's fine for most people, with variable degrees of success for me personally. I'm earnestly glad ppl have a franchise they can get behind and I begrudge no one's enjoyment!

ok, granting that
whats different about the beliefs of every movie hero as proxy?
that cruise's beliefs are scientology as opposed to apple pie/individualism/liberal humanism?
dunno what makes cruise an exception, any star that plays the hero should be held to the same standard by yr argument.
and tbh even if you do that, eh you shouldnt. its just movies.

I am all for Tom Cruise playing paper-thin bizarre everyman wish-fulfillment characters. Someone could probably do a thesis on how none of his action characters have an internal life, it’s completely externalized. The MI movies seem like the plot elements trying to give the character backstory seem like they’re in a constant state of course correction post-Abrams chapter: he can’t be anything other than the spy/cipher
The science fiction roles he’s taken are amazing examples: in Oblivion he’s literally a clone with a programmed mission, but breaking free from that means finding a way to live this all-american dream of collecting detritus of the american past and living in a cabin with a beautiful woman. Edge of Tomorrow? He’s a virtual blank slate and the movie is about programming him, via time travel, to become a hero.
And “Ethan” is probably the most distinct he gets. His name is just “Jack” in several films now
― mh, Sunday, 29 July 2018 00:51 (seven years ago)
well hes never played an interesting character, i mean he has been the template for jock assholes who need to get drunk and cry in the alley behind the bar 2/3 of the way through the story before they man up and win the day by just doing what they did in the olening sequence but *really meaning it*
wait did i segue into that routine about tom cruise

Edge of Tomorrow is def the ultimate Cruise role, we take pleasure in his repeated obliteration while he builds a hero narrative over countless existences

i hated hated hated his attempt at ironic self-deflation in tropic thunder, mostly because he was really bad at it and everyone kept on about it

Nick Pinkerton finds these films "consistent"
If Hunt is in many respects the perfect Tom Cruise role, it is due to the sense of monomaniacal absorption in the job that is built into these films, in which – excepting Woo’s endearing but slightly off-brand second movie – spy games are an around-the-clock occupation that leaves little time for cocktails and bounding between boudoirs.
This suits an actor who can and will do most everything for a scene – including hold his breath for six minutes underwater – but for the life of him cannot project a naturally laid-back air, much as the relentless pitch of the movies seems to be in synch with our uptight, always-on-the-clock age. (In capturing something uniquely contemporary, these frantic films are only outdone as a franchise by the Resident Evil series and its vision of a corporate-sponsored apocalypse.)
“Running in movies since 1981,” reads the bio, possibly intern-penned, for Cruise’s otherwise quite humourless Twitter account – but this gets at something essential about the actor’s scrambling screen presence, which combines Apollonian grace under pressure with hell-bent-for-leather sprinter speed.

― a Mets fan who gave up on everything in the mid '80s (Dr Morbius), Monday, 30 July 2018 17:41 (seven years ago)
I liked this a LOT more than the previous, probably because it took more tonal risks (both way more ridiculous and a little more grave). This is the first time I've had a use for Cavill.

Re watching MI3 - JJ has a knack for the big climactic beats (incl Russell's tender farewell "thank you") and a love for the gadgets (the auto retracting tactical gear!) but yeah too much of it is strictly functional.
― wayne trotsky (Simon H.), Wednesday, 1 August 2018 04:10 (seven years ago)
It reminded me of every most JJ movie in that it has good individual scenes but builds up to stuff that doesn’t pay off. The “anti-god”’discussion early on and PSH’s scenes suggests something more ominous than the perfunctory gun battle that forms the climax. I do like the scene w Cruise telling his fiancé what IMF stands for and her reaction. There’s a good ridiculous long take of his continuous running.
― Nerdstrom Poindexter, Wednesday, 1 August 2018 04:17 (seven years ago)
De Palma’s holds up so much better than I remembered. Lots of plays on illusion and perception throughout. I recalled the train thing at the end as a 90’s too cgi set piece but the sense of speed is really potent and transcends in a way lots of blockbuster set pieces don’t.

I don't remember much about the first five films, though I do remember liking the last two a lot. Yet I hated almost every interminable minute of this one, which felt like B-list Jackie Chan boilerplate. They could have showed the reels out of order, for all it mattered.
Lots of stuff I didn't like this time around, but for some reason more than all the others I was struck by how ridiculous (in an already ridiculous series) it is that literally everyone in this film is a well-dressed model/superhero ninja ... *except* for the two deus ex people that Hunt hangs around with.
xpost Scanning the most recent bits of this thread, yeah, I was also struck by how huge Cavill must be. Haven't seen the Superman movies, but every once in a while in this film they shoot him so that he looks only modestly massive next to Cruise. *pauses post to look up his height.* Huh, he's only 6'1? I guess Cruise is pretty short, but this guy must be all muscle.

I love reading stories of him being super cool to cast mates. Who was the one dude? Jake Johnson, who was in The Mummy? Yeah, him: https://www.thrillist.com/entertainment/nation/jake-johnson-the-mummy-interview-spoilers
Here’s a story that is very anti-Hollywood, but very Tom. He wanted me to work out with him and get in shape for the movie. People have told me in the past, including New Girl, that I need to lose weight and stay in shape. But they don’t tell me how. It’s like, "Hey tubbo, fit into these slacks!" Tom said, "I really want you fit for this movie." I literally thought I was going to have to call Max Greenfield to do Crossfit. But Tom said, "You’ll be training with me and my trainers. If you want I’ll put you on a food plan with my chef. The food is great." And the food was great. He (also) said I could use his gym whenever I wanted. One day I go to work to work out and one of the (assistant directors) goes, "You can’t go in right now because Tom is working out." I thought, "That sucks, I got here an hour early to get this in, but he’s Tom Cruise." After, when we were shooting later that day, he said, "What happened to you? I thought you said you were going to work out this morning?" I told him I was told not to bother him and he got really pissed. He said, "Let me make something crystal clear: I don’t care what anybody on the crew says to you, they don’t know what I’m saying to you. And I’m saying to you that you are always welcome. I don’t care what I’m doing in there. You’re my castmate. Come in." He’s the best.

Maybe he is relatively lonely/isolated and likes the company. I hear a lot of stories of Cruise hanging with cast members on set or during filming, but not a lot of stories (lately) of his personal life, when the Cruise Machine goes on lockdown. Do you think his workout buddies - or anyone - hangs out with him off-set? For such a tabloid target, Cruise has mastered the art of disappearing, or maybe people just don't talk about it. Here are a couple of more good stories printed on Vulture:
Before Jonathan Lipnicki, there was another kid set to steal the show on the Jerry Maguire set. He spent a few weeks filming, but after a certain point, he “ran out of gas,” Cameron Crowe told Deadline, and wanted to leave the production. The role was recast — Lipnicki stepped in — but Crowe got a call from the mother of the boy who almost took the role. “Weeks later, the mother of the first kid calls the office. I got on the phone and she says, ‘Will you please tell Tom Cruise thank you for the way he has kept in touch with my son, sent him letters and gifts, and just let him know all is well?’ I thought, wow, I had no idea Tom Cruise was doing that,” he said. Crowe continued:“She said, ‘It really helped my son. He’s over it now, he’s fine, and Tom did a beautiful job helping him transition back to his life.’ I went to Tom, later, and said, you quietly helped this kid through what could have been a terrible transition. Thank you, but why did you never tell any of us? Tom said, ‘I just didn’t want that first actor to go to the movies, look at the screen and think he’d failed. I wanted him to love movies, his entire life.’ That is the quiet way Tom Cruise conducts his professional life.”

During the filming of Jerry Maguire, Cuba Gooding Sr. impolitely inquired about Tom Cruise’s sexuality. “He gave Tom Cruise a hug and said, ‘I love you, man. Now seriously, are you gay or not?’” Gooding Jr. recalled, years later. “I almost fainted. And thought, Please, lord, let me disappear.” Cruise was so chill dealing with the prying parent: “Tom just laughed and said ‘No,’” his co-star reported.
During rehearsals for A Few Good Men, Kevin Pollock noticed Tom Cruise making notes in his script with a ridiculously huge pen. At first, they joked about it. Then, Cruise convinced Pollock to try writing with it. “It’s like an angel wing floating on a cloud. It was a magical pen,” Pollock recalled to the Chive. Even Demi Moore agreed the pen was a total joy to use. When Pollock learned the pen cost $500, he was crestfallen. Later, Cruise’s assistant showed up with a gift: the luxury writing utensil itself. When Pollock admitted to his co-star that he hadn’t used the pen because he felt it deserved a special spot on his mantle, Cruise bought him a second $500 pen — one for the mantle, and one for Pollock’s pocket.
As Bill Hader and Tom Cruise were in Los Angeles filming promos for the 2010 MTV Movie Awards, word reached the set that a car bomb had just gone off in Times Square. Hader was a new dad at the time, concerned about his wife and infant daughter in New York. Cruise noticed Hader’s concern, and asked when he’d get to go home to check on them. Hader wasn’t due back to the city for two more days, and so, Tom Cruise took over the set and got Bill Hader home by 8 a.m. the next morning. As Hader recalled:“He thinks for a second. ‘No,’ he says. ‘We’ll get you home tonight.’ And in that moment, Tom Cruise, as Les Grossman, in a karate gi, began to direct all my coverage,” Hader recalled. “All my footage, all my close-ups. Boom! We do three perfect takes. Boom, boom, boom. Everyone’s chest-butting each other, some people are chest-butting themselves, people are going insane.” Two days’ worth of work, Hader said, “and he got it done in 45 minutes.” Then Katie Holmes came up to him and handed him a piece of paper with his new flight information. “You’re on the red eye tonight,” she told him. “I’m like, ‘What?!’” Hader said. Because Cruise got him out of work and on a plane that night, he was able to surprise his wife and daughter by 7:45 the next morning and check in on them in person. “So that’s what it’s like to work with Tom Cruise,” Hader said.

Obviously he has a team of assistants and stuff to help him give gifts and do good deeds, but he sounds pretty consistent (including real life acts of heroism). He's generous, he listens, he pays attention to details. For all I know these are all just facets of being the human incarnate of an intergalactic God, but who knows?

yeah no- I am more than happy to see cruise keep at this until he physically can't any longer. this was a blast and I have no doubt that even if the next one is only half as good, the quality of the series is so ridiculously high that it'll outclass most anything else.
if I had any complaint I'd like to see more punchy dialogue on the next go

Angela Bassett was so so awful in her brief time onscreen. I don't know what happened, I can't recall ever seeing her in anything else where she was distractingly bad so I'm assuming she's a perfectly competent actress, but she was just brutal here. Baldwin wasn't much better.

― Number None, Wednesday, 5 September 2018 18:33 (six years ago)
The campiness and hammy acting seemed a lot more prominent in this one than in previous MIs. A lot of the dialogue seemed on par with video game voice acting (and maybe worse than the voice acting in recent video games--more like 1998 Metal Gear Solid level)--but it was hard to say whether this was intentional self-parody or just phenomenally bad acting!
― Dan I., Monday, 24 September 2018 16:55 (six years ago)
Or bad scripting I suppose. I agree that Alec Baldwin and Angela Bassett gave the worst performances
― Dan I., Monday, 24 September 2018 16:57 (six years ago)
Rewatching some Ghost Protes in lieu of election returns (and suddenly realizing that 'we gotta stop them nukes!' was basically the plot of the new one also but oh well). Ethan Hunt can save us tonight if no one else can.

Fallout was no Rogue Nation or Ghost Protocol but the peaks were on par. I enjoyed the absurd helicopter pursuit at the end but not as much as the two-part chase through the streets of Paris. Rebecca Ferguson remains the current co-MVP of the series, pretty obviously. They should always put her on a motorcycle in these flicks and keep her motives murky.
the twist w/r/t John Lark was fairly obvious, but it still worked. I enjoyed the method in which it was revealed, since i still like a good mask trick in this series.
oh yeah and i also really liked Vanessa Kirby as the White Widow, and her role as the daughter of Max from the first one (I'm just assuming, with her calling her mom by the name "Max" in her speech).

― badg, Wednesday, 16 December 2020 13:57 (four years ago)
Yeah, how dare they tolerate a tirade literally intended to ensure they keep working despite apparently (and one presumes repeatedly) flouting safety rules that could shut the whole production down. Strike, strike, strike!
(More) seriously though, I assume he is a producer on the film, and I also assume this is what producers do all the time and have forever, to the extent that it's an archetype. Except I assume producers (and stars) have historically yelled at people for lesser things then breaking protocol during a deadly pandemic. "What happened to all the fucking jelly donuts!!!!!!"
And yeah, I've read lots of accounts of him being really good to crew and cast alike.
― Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 16 December 2020 16:37 (four years ago)
the tape is him bellowing repeatedly at a group of people that he'll fire them and it appears to have only captured part of the rant. there is literally no universe in which that particular screamfest is reasonable. if the crew did something that's worth being fired over because it put them or others at risk, fire them in a non-public environment. you don't line up a group of employees and yell "i'll fucking fire you! i'll fucking fire you as well! and you over there!" it's psychotic. yes, people should be protected and smart during covid. no, this is not the way to do it.

watched the first one last night for the first time in forever. holds up well, except for ethan hunt's deep dive into the internet when he's first trying to track down max (his second search on usenet iirc is for "max.com" lol)
cruise isn't quite as good here as he's been in 4-6 (and presumably 7 & 8), he was leaning a bit much on his '80s charm and a few good men "i want the truth!" intense acting and he relied on head tilts as much as early clooney and hand shapes as much as jeff goldblum back then. but he was starting to come more into his own i think. most of the cast is only serviceable; i think the best roles here belong to czerny (peak smarm), a totally charming and in-charge vanessa redgrave, and kristin scott thomas somehow makes a huge and tragic impression with her tiny role.
it felt big-scale in 1996 but it seems so small scale now.

― Josh in Chicago, Friday, 19 May 2023 18:59 (two years ago)
first movie is such a strange artefact now, its not really like very much at all of the time (except in very specific ways maybe like ronin)- unless im missing some other major efforts the next one that did "run around europe" as such a major element of the style vibe and frankly plot to any note is maybe bourne identity and obv after that a glut, by which stage i think MI has already decided to plow its current furrow into the modern bond (by which i mean location, vocation, vacation with elements of camp that actual modern bond makes a hames of when trying)
its not because of depalma - because honestly youve to think twice about its being a depalma imo- that i feel it hearkens back to a seventies kind of vibe- and yes scale (a certain claustrophobia it gets very very right indeed) is a part of it
the other thing its like is an agatha christie, somewhat imo to the detriment
― Ár an broc a mhic (darraghmac), Friday, 19 May 2023 19:01 (two years ago)
Those first three films are still such a strange trilogy, three very different Ethan Hunts, each one feeling disconnected from the other and while one could plausibly deny to oneself that perhaps that's part of his spy skill I think it really is more about the franchise fumbling its way through character and worldbuilding without having an overall plan. Versus Ghost protocol through the present, which has certainly more of a genuinely strong through line and serial storyline that doesn't betray the series, unlike what ultimately happened with the Craig bonds. Though I suppose Ghost protocol is in a lot of ways very much its own thing?
― omar little, Friday, 19 May 2023 19:57 (two years ago)
I found Ghost Protocol very boring at the time, but I should rewatch it.
I do like the scene with the hallway screen projection, it's totally fun and absurd, like somethning out of a Buster Keaton movie. As much as I prefer the McQuarrie films, I can't recall any specific set pieces or scenes in them, but I still remember that weirdo hallway scene.
III is maybe JJ's only good movie IMO, because it's basically just an extended Alias episode.
― Chuck_Tatum, Friday, 19 May 2023 20:14 (two years ago)
Even the big stunts aren't really memorable in themselves as pieces of filmaking -- I'll usually think "wow, Tom Cruise is impressive for doing that" and then completely forget the stunt itself by the time the next movie rolls around. There's nothing as iconic as the upside down break-in from the first movie.
― Chuck_Tatum, Friday, 19 May 2023 20:17 (two years ago)
NB I love these movies and am excited for the next one
― Chuck_Tatum, Friday, 19 May 2023 20:18 (two years ago)
the problem w/III (i think it's the worst MI film though that doesn't mean it's *not* Abrams' best film, damning w/faint praise here probably) is it does feel like a TV episode, and also it forced callbacks to Ethan Hunt's domestic life in subsequent films. not bad in theory but in series practice, ehh...
― omar little, Friday, 19 May 2023 20:35 (two years ago)

We are watching the series as a family and I have to say, 1-3 are great but very different beasts but the changes in tone work to keep you interested.
we did 4 this weekend and it was forgettable,
one seems more indebted to the original and seems more Spy-ey. Redgrave brilliant.two is great for helping you explain why John Woo directing is a big thing to kids born after 2010... also features the only correct use of the phrase 'to get a ride' in a hollywood film three has the best baddie in SFH and they purposefully never explain what the Rabbits Foot is.... (IIRC)Four was good but suffered from having the same Russian launch codes plot device as Goldeneye.
will hit five in a few weeks and see if it does get into its formulaic stride at that point...

Jake Johnson has a bunch of good Cruise stories.
https://www.thrillist.com/entertainment/nation/jake-johnson-the-mummy-interview-spoilers
One day I got to work to work out and one of the (assistant directors) goes, "You can’t go in right now because Tom is working out." I thought, "That sucks, I got here an hour early to get this in, but he’s Tom Cruise." After, when we were shooting later that day, he said, "What happened to you? I thought you said you were going to work out this morning?" I told him I was told not to bother him and he got really pissed. He said, "Let me make something crystal clear: I don’t care what anybody on the crew says to you, they don’t know what I’m saying to you. And I’m saying to you that you are always welcome. I don’t care what I’m doing in there. You’re not other. You’re my castmate. Come in." He’s the best.

I think Ghost Protocol is really good, the best in the series up to that point.
But Rogue Nation is still the best MI film, but more than that it's just one of the best action movies ever made, but it gets lost in the shuffle of great action films because it's merely considered to be a superior entry in this series rather than elevating the genre overall. The underwater centrifuge break-in leading to the car chase leading to the motorcycle chase is just astonishing. And the opera house sequence. Making Ilsa Faust the co-leading character to an extent was a v smart play.
Fallout is a p superior follow-up but not on the same level.

watched Fallout last night -- better than i remember though it's not the equal of Rogue Nation, just bc the lack of a true villain til the third act makes things a bit hazy in terms of the plot, and Ilsa being in play in less intriguing ways. But it's really good, i liked Cavill a bit more this time around as a properly brutish character though i didn't necessarily believe he'd be a crazy manifesto dude unlike Solomon Lane, Vanessa Kirby is a curveball character in the best ways (the perfect choice to play Max/Redgrave's daughter here really), the helicopter pursuit at the end is ridiculous in the best ways.

I own a Blu-Ray set of the first 5 but have never watched 2 or 3. I have the feeling that the hyperbolic praise for Hoffman comes from people who like Hoffman but don't like M:I movies, so whatever. I've seen him (and liked him) in enough things that I can pretty much imagine his work in this — the quiet scary voice, the rage-panic shouty voice, blah blah blah. Maybe I'll watch it one of these days but I'm much more likely to watch 4, 5 and 6 over and over instead.

Great writeup, by the way. You should do more straightforwardly humorous stuff. You're good at it.
Proper ratings too, though my own personal ranking would give the 5/5 to Rogue Nation and the 4.5/5 to Fallout.

Ha, much thanks to you both! Ian Grey said similarly elsewhere, perhaps I should try some more.
Yeah I see how/why people vary on this. My sense is them always working to refine what they've got and make it even better (which is why I'll be interested in how this two-part setup works and if it will stick the landing, but I suspect it can).
― Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 11 July 2023 21:51 (two years ago)

Yeah, not inaccurate, which is why I think his best moment is when he has to imitate Cruise/Hunt. It's amazing!
yes the ratings are good but just a minor correction, m:i 2 is a 6/5

I hated the second movie and haven’t seen it since the first-run. Watched it again yesterday and think it might be one of the best in the series! Even if it essentially begat XxX and its ilk. It’s just enchantingly ridiculous.

It is the definition of a serviceable performance, not bad, not good, fine. He is good at being intimidated by the other, better, Australian actor, the top henchman, who I think is pretending to be South African.

(he quit acting bcz he transitioned into directing in America, and also accidentally had another full-time job in Sydney when a fun thing he did at a local cafe once a year turned into the largest short film festival in the world. his one-off return to the other side of the camera in 2020 was then one of the biggest cinema hits of the year in Australia. quite a career!)

Okay, I updated my Tumblr post there with another wholly-accurate-summary and actual thoughts about the new one but I will say two things here, first for a spoiler for this new one:
The eye motif in the trailers gave it away but I am terribly amused that not only is the villain as such TechnoSauron and Techno-The One Ring too, there's a key thematic plot point that's very LOTR as well!
And a spoiler for the one next year, if you're avoiding checking cast lists and the like:
With Henry Czerny back as Kittridge from the first film this time around and next year too, I was absolutely delighted to see that next year also sees the return of Rolf Saxon as William Donloe, aka the CIA analyst who gets fucked up and needing to use the toilet at Langley so Ethan can break in from above, and who Czerny sends to Alaska. That's a long game!
― Ned Raggett, Thursday, 13 July 2023 19:12 (two years ago)
I have just watched this and haven’t read Ned’s take (but I will!) but it was an interesting departure to go to a synthesis approach at this point instead of the reboot (pt 3) and evolution approach. In the first half hour, I was wondering if we were seeing a sequel movie (with somebackstory included) from the first Mission Impossible from the director of The Way of the Gun. Even shades of John Woo’s outing in that bridge fight and the preceding corridor
― mh, Saturday, 15 July 2023 02:36 (two years ago)
This was a lot of fun but it made my eyes cross keeping up at times. Loved the entire airport sequence and the final train sequence, and Pom Klemntieff's car chase.

I was annoyed by the whole “Ethan’s weakness is his friends, but very specifically women” and felt like Rebecca Ferguson was incredibly short-changed in this, but maybe she was busy with other projects? I’m not even sure how much she was on the set because most of it was seemingly her stunt double

Nedblr: if Bird set the template and tempo for where it all should go then McQuarrie had a perfect handle on how to make all the implicit nonsense make perfect sense in the moment
btw much of that template may be McQuarrie too - they shut down production for a few weeks halfway through Ghost Protes and Cruise brought McQ in to rewrite the movie completely around the scenes that were already shot, and sets that hadn't been struck. (He shot some second unit before bouncing again, too.) The script they went into production with had Renner taking over the franchise from Hunt by the end.
(and Lorne Balfe wasn't returning on Fallout: McQuarrie used his regular score guy on Rogue Nation and retained Elswit from GoPro, then changed composer and cinematographer for Fallout, to try and keep some element of the "new director on every instalment" energy. But Balfe/McQ/editor Eddie Hamilton gelled so well on Fallout that they kept that team rolling on Maverick and Chinny Reckoning.)

For a movie that stops any momentum to have it re-explained every other minute, they kind of handwaved over exactly how they can use the sub-AI to kill the ableton live plug-in antagonist (re: LOTR, do they have to drop the core into a supercomputer volcano or something?), and they also bizarrely left most of Cruise's nemesis backstory blank despite intercutting a lot of context free flashbacks.
Is the recruit at the beginning someone significant or just a prop?

finally saw MI2 and MI3. 2 was fun, but so hilariously Woo that it sticks out like a sore thumb - why does he love doves so much?. story a bit light but tbh that wasn't a dealbreaker.
enjoyed 3 a ton, but it is kinda funny that the PSH extraction sort of became a thing that appeared in almost every action movie of that decade (there's a similar one in the movie The Kingdom!). yeah I know it was Abrams and of course there was a GODDAMN MAP to find the Rabbit's Foot but w/e.

re: Philip's question, it's intentionally vague about what they'll be able to do once they use the key. it's still pure macguffin territory, left open for the next movie. I'm assuming they're using "source code" in the 90s hacker movie genre way and not the literal way
Esai Morales's character was left similarly vague. I don't think we ever have learned what Ethan Hunt did before he was recruited to the IMF, and now we know he was involved in something with this mysterious Gabriel, and Gabriel killed a woman Hunt cared for (in the way he cares about women, as high value mission partners that he must protect)
― mh, Monday, 17 July 2023 19:48 (two years ago)
vanessa kirby is canonically vanessa redgrave's daughterand that wasn’t even stated in the other movie she was insean you’ll definitely be fine, McQuarrie gives you everything you need to know in any given movie — ppl who care about the characters and lore have extra stuff to enjoy if they do remember, but first-time viewers are fully brought on the ride

i didn't think motorcycle parachute cliff jump would hit as hard as it did since they basically showed it in the trailer (i even saw a special trailer once--maybe as a preview to top gun?--that was like a mini behind the scenes doc about the making of the stunt) but it hit soooo hard i was screaming. tom cruise is definitely going to die soon
― flopson, Tuesday, 18 July 2023 19:37 (two years ago)
i thought this started off slow... some of the dialogue/set up felt like... wait is this one of these AI scripts that was gently touched up by a human right before production? but i thought the big set piece scenes really delivered. not sure i've ever seen the massive police chase thru the heart of a european city thing done before w/ two ppl handcuffed together. and i watched the derailed train scene thru my fingers w/ gritted teeth. loved seeing them avoid falling objects in the kitchen car. that whole sequence was really well done, the way the camera messes w/ your sense of gravity. i really don't think this plot is strong enough to carry a sequel -- "it's an insidious self aware computer virus that can do anything to anyone to anywhere!" is like, ok i need a bit more here...... -- but, you know, i'll be there.

― linoleum gallagher (Neanderthal), Tuesday, 18 July 2023 19:53 (two years ago)
I did really expect more of a cliffhanger, I mean I know the main conflict is unresolved, but I didn't expect Ethan to already have the completed key, knowledge of where he's supposed to take it, the main corrupt CIA director dead, and Gabriel going the wrong way in the back of a dumptruck.
― linoleum gallagher (Neanderthal), Tuesday, 18 July 2023 19:55 (two years ago)
Had an action movie catch up over the last few days - had never seen iii onwards, so went GP, RN, Fo, iii. Loved them and nothing really to add to the praise here but also threw in Tenet (between 6 & iii) and the contrast felt so stark - no sense of fun & action sequences dragging or slipping into confusion, even putting backward/forward shit aside. Made me appreciate the clarity of these films even more.
fwiw rank 4≥5>iii>6. Prefer 4's sequences but 5 is optimal cast (Ferguson), also solid villain. 6 still really strong - white loo maybe best hand-to-hand and top masky bits.
― woof, Friday, 21 July 2023 11:26 (two years ago)
i really don't think this plot is strong enough to carry a sequel -- "it's an insidious self aware computer virus that can do anything to anyone to anywhere!" is like, ok i need a bit more her
yeah this had me repeating my gripes about the last few fast & furious movies, having our heroic action heroes fighting the concept of the internet itself, its just v boring & uncinematic to me.
the only time it felt like they were going somewhere cool & interesting with it was the scary bit when the computer was imitating simon peggs voice. could have been a very creepy twist on the franchise obsession with masks - maybe the virus could have somehow infected the little voicechanger computer chips ppl wear on their necks when they're wearing masks in order to make them say things irl that they didnt want to be saying, stuff like that. but they dispensed with it in like 60 seconds when the computer decided to just say "ha ha ha I FOOL U"
overall loved this though, train sequence at the end was top tier.

I didn't really love the serous stuff to be honest, there was about as much in set pieces as a regular Mission Impossible film, but all of the serious talky stuff in between bored the shite out of me - even when it's just all of the cast turning up at the sex club and glaring at each other. It feels a lot like the Daniel Craig dead end - no-one goes to a Mission Impossible film looking to get into the mythos of Ethan Hunt.
― Andrew Farrell, Sunday, 23 July 2023 17:00 (two years ago)
I guess the comparison with Indy is obvious, but this felt even more like prepping Hayley Atwell's character to take over after the death of a Ethan Hunt towards the end of the next film.
― Andrew Farrell, Sunday, 23 July 2023 18:03 (two years ago)
i found the shading of hunt's backstory way more tasteful than what they did with bond, but it prob helps that they're not playing around with established mythos
― ivy., Sunday, 23 July 2023 18:24 (two years ago)
A card you can only play once but I'm kinda impressed they didn't do that until the seventh film.

There'll be a behind-the-scenes that explains that the flashbacks to first love / Ilsa / Grace before the motorbike jump were because he needs exactly the right angle of sad erection for the stunt to work, aerodynamically.
I'm joking of course, there's nothing sexual about Ethan Hunt, even if for a second it looked like his chaste date with Ilsa ended with him taking her to a sex club.

It also suffers a bit from all the talking about AI and Gabriel's showboating as the true believer - the previous films are spy shit / biotech / biotech / nuclear / spy shit / nuclear and sure it's a bit repetitive but at least everyone gets it, you can get the new guy up to speed quickly and transition smoothly on to jumping off the Burj.
Anyway I hope Luther finds it in the first week and spends the next three months getting stoned.

― Tracer Hand, Friday, 4 August 2023 23:59 (two years ago)
for the first time i felt like Tom Cruise was one of the worst things about this. His meet-cute in the airport with… the thief… Hayley Atwell, was so fuckin choady. It’s supposed to be lightly dangerous and delicious and something you can’t wait to see more of and Tom just doesn’t have it in him. She’s an accomplished thief and he surprises her with the “tap you on the other shoulder” trick?? And then bumps up into her, like kind of physically cornering her? Charming. Smooth stuff, Tom. Hayley tries her gosh darn best to be winsome but Tom delivers his quips like a lead-lined condom. “I’ll scream.” “I hope you do.” Tom that’s supposed to be a sexy line. For the love of God.The train climax was great, Rome car chase great. The camera work tremendous. Venice satisfyingly claustrophobic. Extremely crunchy soundtrack and solidity to everything.“The key!!!!!!!”I guess I’m alone in liking the AI, and Gabriel as its avatar. Truly scary when it begins impersonating people.
― Tracer Hand, Saturday, 5 August 2023 00:09 (two years ago)
Oh I loved Atwell’s waistcoats and sleeved shirts. Very “gentleman thief”.Related: Loved all the knife action. More knifeplay in this than in all the Bonds and Bournes combined probably
― Tracer Hand, Saturday, 5 August 2023 00:11 (two years ago)
Much to my surprise, I didn't really like this one at all. Pretty campy at times, pretty hacky all the time. If someone told me they had changed teams again to a new writer/director I'd believe it. Weird editing, flat comedy, pretty tedious set pieces (motorcycle aside), those two federal agents serving absolutely no purpose, a baddie assassin that seemed like they wandered in from the "John Wick" universe, the movie is constantly telling you what you are watching, and so many Dutch angles!
Another matter related to "Tom Cruise welcomes you back to the movie." I've noticed a couple of theater trends in recent years. The first is that no matter how nice the actual theaters get, in terms of amenities and comfort, they still rarely get the image framing right. I mean, they get it right for the commercials, but it's like they've given up adjusting the screen to suit the aspect ratio of the actual feature. And speaking of commercials, it's bad enough to sit through 30 minutes of stuff before the movie starts, but at least half of the shit is about ... going to the movies. I'm already at the movies! You don't have to convince me that movies deserve to be seen in the theater, just show me another fucking trailer! Like, the trailer for "Killers of the Flower Moon"? Yes, that makes me want to go to the movies. But a PSA just showing people having fun at the movies? Don't remind me that other people are traditionally what has made going to the movies *not* fun.
Anyway, I can never remember these movies after I see them, but I think I'll remember not liking this one enough to keep me home whenever the next one comes out.
― Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 8 August 2023 04:17 (two years ago)

Shea Wigham and his partner were just there to serve as another impetus to force Ethan and gang to keep moving. Without them, the standoff in the street in Italy would have been harder to escape.
I knew they'd bungle it the moment they cast Shea Wigham in one of the parts. Nobody's getting apprehended when Shea is in charge

was very amused when someone was explaining how the key is the most important thing in the world and no one knows where it is and we need to find it at all costs while nearby there was a computer screen showing an extremely fine-detailed 3D model of the key spinning around. just make a copy of the fucking key! more than once this happened iirc
― waste of compute (One Eye Open), Tuesday, 8 August 2023 13:09 (two years ago)
Didn't the doodad have some sort of magic matching widget in it that made it impossible to counterfeit? Not that details like that even matter in movies like this. I was shocked how many times there would be some 5 minute exposition dump, like, "This Entity is unlike anything we have ever seen. It knows what we have decided before we have decided it. It doesn't even need to watch us because it knows where we are," etc. And then the next scene Simon Pegg or whomever will be using a computer and then be shocked, shocked, when the Entity takes over or breaks it or whatever. They'd probably try to copy the key, and then the computer would melt.
Deus ex Wigham was the last thing Cruise and Co. needed to stay on the move. Just so dumb, these two American agents traversing the globe in plain sight, getting into shootouts, tasing people, etc. So much pickpocketing and talk of pickpocketing and up-close magic in this movie, too. They should have cast David Blaine as the bad guy.
(tight closeup on a serious Cruise): "You don't know this guy like I do. I've seen things you couldn't imagine. I've seen him pierce his bicep with a needle. He's caught a bullet with his mouth. He stood on a block of ice for 63 hours, stood on a pole for 35 hours, held his breath for 17 minutes and was buried alive for 7 days ... just because he could. There is nothing we can do to stop him, which is why we need to beat him at his own game. I need you to freeze me in a block of ice."
"But Ethan, that would kill you!"
"Exactly. It's the last thing he would expect me to do. It will make him let down his guard, and then we can get the key."
"But Ethan, you'll be dead!"
"Just leave that part to me."

i have no idea who gabriel is or why he has been chosen or what his link to the sentient superpower is nor what the sentient superpower wants but as usual that stuff really, really does not matter.
its a series about doing stuff secretly under deadline and looking amazing and honestly i just really identify with that

loved this but it did feel stupid in a way the other McQ ones haven't (or maybe i just need a rewatch), they definitely pulled a "write an enemy so powerful you don't know what to do with it," didn't really come into play at the end. benji putting his trust in a self-driving car was tense until you realize they weren't going to do anything with it. hunt pickpocketing the key seemed like one thing THE ENTITY should've been able to predict. nothing as interesting as benji's voice being hacked. it's already hard to take ROGUE AI seriously as a threat knowing how bad midjourney is at drawing hands.
i was certain that the gabriel flashbacks were clips from one of the first 3 movies, now that i know they're brand new they actually seem clunkier than exposition in fast and the furious movies. just totally unnecessary to do it that way. the less i know about ethan hunt the better.

big fan of this one. getting this out of the way, i thought the Ethan/Ilsa romance which was only hinted at maybe didn't work, only because when she died it didn't feel heavy enough for someone that close to him, and while i don't want that type of heaviness for this story since it becomes an albatross on the narrative in these types of films (see: latter Craig Bonds), it felt a bit muted as far as a moment. She was a fantastic character who arguably revived the series as much as McQuarrie, maybe she deserved a bit better. but maybe they were just coming to a dead end with the part and maybe Ferguson was done playing that role and had other things she wanted to commit her time to. i suspect that might be the case. which is cool, she's a fantastic actor.
Cruise did his usual Cruise stuff and as the solid center of the franchise he's both likable and clearly insane to do what he does IRL. i appreciate his commitment to the craft. There's not much more to say about him.
Hayley Atwell is great, i also give a shoutout to her wardrobe and generally the duplicitous nature of the character really serves the narrative well, it's less about protecting her but protecting her while keeping an eye on her because she's liable to both escape and steal everything from you while doing so. which works to keep the chase going through various countries and setpieces the entire time. the car chase was particularly excellent, maybe not quite as impactful as the Ilsa pursuit in Rogue Nation but more gleefully demented.
Speaking of demented, i'm guessing Pom Klementieff really appreciated being given a shot to play a character completely the opposite of Mantis. she was clearly having a great time there, my kid's favorite part was her cackling while driving that armored vehicle over and through various obstacles. It's a very Xenia Onatopp type role. i also liked the brutality of the twist involving her, where Gabriel's deduction is correct but perhaps from the way the story plays out we can also deduce he played himself and caused what he correctly thought would occur to actually happen in the end.
Esai Morales was a good choice for the Gabriel part, he's a very good actor who never tips over into absurdity despite this being a potentially absurd role, and i also just like to see an underrated performer being given a juicy part along these lines, going mano a mano with Tom Cruise on top of a train, knife fighting his way across Europe, etc. i feel like perhaps Gabriel didn't need to be a guy from Ethan's past, that was a bit too "Silva in Skyfall" to me, but this film fortunately didn't turn into a therapy session, it just kept moving.
it was nice to see Czerny back in that role, with some good callbacks to his part in the first film. Vanessa Kirby was good too. everyone was good!
gonna be psyched to see how the story wraps up. from what i've read, there was the thought that MI:8 would wrap the franchise up, but it seems like it'll continue on for a bit longer. I hope so, it's probably the only ongoing action franchise i have confidence in as far as consistent QC, the Abrams entry aside.
i almost forgot about it in the midst of the rest of the film, but the opening scene with the Russian submarine is a great one, with such a bleak and haunting final shot.
― omar little, Monday, 23 October 2023 17:00 (one year ago)
Yeah as a grim miniadventure it was pretty great (and the actual final shot of the film appropriately fucked up and ominous).

Pom Klementieff
Was not really a fan of this movie, but particularly didn't like her character, tbh. Of course these movies are innately ridiculous, but I'm trying to think of other instances/characters that were as outright cartoonish. She reminded me, yeah, of a few colorful Bond henchpersons (Onatopp, May Day), but also a particular strain of eccentric movie assassins, not just like you may find in the heightened (sur)reality of "John Wick," but, like, Sam Phillips in "Die Hard 3," Lucy Liu in "Payback." Kind of took me out a bit.

― Josh in Chicago, Monday, 23 October 2023 23:49 (one year ago)
I don't know, something like that can't even begin to bother me in this type of movie. They are sort of the American Bond films at this point, to an extent. The outlandishness will periodically come with a territory, and it's all in good fun. I've never been taken out of any of these movies by anything other than III being mostly bad.

Government forces in a racist African country have captured Kitara, the leader of the revolutionary forces, and will torture him to death in their effort to find the gold bullion he has hidden. To rescue Kitara and secure the gold, Jim plans to manipulate the security official interrogating him. What better way to manipulate a racist than to turn him into what he least wants to be and turn his own forces against him?
So, yes, the Mission Impossible team comes up with some kind of thingummabob which turns racist Colonel Kohler into a black man!

I have liked or loved all the McQuarrie missions though I cannot believe the last one refrigerated Ilsa Faust, who was probably the best character in the entire series and largely responsible for Rogue Nation being the best one in the series. MI2 is the most unhinged and of course they would make the decision to make the safest choice possible with a JJ Abrams film after that.
I worked with a guy in 2000 on a night shift who would go out on breaks and steal those giant bus stop movie posters. He gave me a few of them, I took them back to my mom‘s house on a road trip one time, I was there last year cleaning some stuff out and got incredible nostalgia for gone in 60 seconds, Shanghai noon, the Samuel L Jackson shaft movie, and of course MI2.

have to be the voice of reason about 2 here. it’s a mess, and not even in an interesting or thoughtful way — literally slapdash, woo was forced to cut like over an hour of runtime from what he wanted to be the Final Cut iirc. bizarre discontinuities, scene sequencing that defy all common sense, tom cruise trying to be sexy…
the overuse of the mask thing is almost redeemed by its sheer campiness, but that last one in the bunker is just so obvious it’s an obvious crutch and ruins what could have been a decent scene
the acting is also unbearably stiff (imo). some good action sequences for sure tho

watched both 3 and 4 last night, trying to speed run it so we can go see dead reckoning pt 2 this weekend
3 was not as bad as i was expecting tbh? psh is so scary—maybe a little bit *too* scary for an mi villain?—and the bathroom face mask abduction swap was fun. color grading is so shamelessly teal & orange but it felt dated in a way that made me nostalgic. idk, i get that it is a little more vanilla and safe than the others, but it still has iconic scenes. 4 however is just absolute bangers and totally eclipses 3 on every dimension while having a lot of structural similarities, so i can see why people hate on 3 in relative terms
― flopson, Monday, 26 May 2025 14:36 (three months ago)
2 is an outlier and 3 is a bit square but they’re both totally fine and fun.

I think Ving is still an underrated part of this series’ success. I always feel slightly less tense once he’s made his first appearance in each movie. He’s fun to watch, spars well with Cruise, and is more or less the only purely likeable character. (I haven’t seen 8.)

― Clever Message Board User Name (Raymond Cummings), Thursday, 21 August 2025 13:00 (six days ago)
huh i thought final reckoning rocked. submarine behring strait and prop plane chase were two of the best set pieces of the series. rolf saxon and his wife were great
i also found the suggestion that after the film ends ethan is going to fuse his brain with the entity and become an omnipotent benevolent god that rules the world to be a hilariously pure expression of cruise’s megalomania
― flopson, Thursday, 21 August 2025 14:28 (six days ago)
making half the movie a congratulatory victory lap celebrating and revisiting selected events from the entire series was a bit much
we have a series that does that with regularity: Fast & Furious

xp it's also a fine endpoint of the Ethan Hunt character trajectory of: good spy in a bit over his head -> world's best spy -> superhero -> literal messiah who literally comes back from the dead.

i enjoyed the flashbacks as mcquarrie’s totalitarian desire to rationalize the films before he took over and bring them under his control. but i can’t forgive him for explaining the (hilariously never explained) rabbit’s foot macguffin from iii and shoehorning it into the entity
(feels weird to use spoiler hiders in these movies where the plot is so stupid)
― flopson, Thursday, 21 August 2025 15:15 (six days ago)
set pieces worked great for me but connective tissue was way below standard for the series.

Also someone please cast Hayley Atwell in more stuff my god

sic otm
this was like the zombified corpses of like, three half-movies stitched together and animated with lightning jolts or whateverbut hey look at our shiny SET PIECES you guys (just dont look at literally anything else like plot, story, dialog (definitely noy dialog) or character)
literally held together w narration (! SO MUCH NARRATION) flashbacks (at least 50% flashbacks)and at some points dialogue is even adr’d over actors standing in shadow (esai morales for example) because they clearly didnt have a working script and were just whatevering their way through this massive budget movie wasting a thousand people’s time & good effort because those people thought they were making a movie and not “finding” the story while they were shooting/editing etc
this franchise has always been dumb fun but never so clearly, actually cravenly shitty (imo)
like just scooping out this cobbled together expensive garbage and throwing it on our plates because we the stupid sheeple will pay to see it based on good will that was genuinley earned and now completely wasted
to pull these run and gun b-movie dodges when they have all the fucking money in the world is kind if shameful to me?
cheap movies do these things because they cant AFFORD to do more

I didn't like the last one, and literally couldn't muster the energy to see this one. Like, I want to say three times I was prepared to see it but at the last minute just kind of noped out. And it's not even that long! Just seemed ... exhausting. Even the trailer made me tired.

Did they ever figure out who had the key?
― Tracer Hand, Thursday, 21 August 2025 22:59 (six days ago)
i hate that key

but hey look at our shiny SET PIECES you guys (just dont look at literally anything else like plot, story, dialog (definitely noy dialog) or character)
i didn’t find it exceptionally bad itr relative to the other recent movies in the series tbh
some parts of the plot/story that were enjoyable:
- set up to the behring strait sequence had some good iterations of the classic MI scene where ethan explains his plan to an incredulous audience. “so how are they supposed to know which random 4 square foot circle of ice to cut and collect your near-death hypothermic body from, out of the entire sea?” “by making an educated guess” - ethan’s in the decompression chamber responding in the most asexual way possible to hayley atwell’s embraces- showing up at rolf saxon’s house but the russians beat them to it was tense and suspenseful - the subplot with angela basset and nick offerman actually successfully threw me on some red herrings (i thought offerman was compromised) and succeeded in having some decent jarring plot twists. i love basset so much in this role

one thing i could see being annoying about final reckoning is it relies extremely strongly on the assumption that the audience an emotional connection to the series and characters. but i do (lol) so a lot of that worked
― flopson, Friday, 22 August 2025 13:35 (five days ago)
Just struck me how funny it would have been if Tom Cruise's character had died heroically in each installment, but then showed up again in the next with no explanation.

This shit is stupid. They are all sitting around talking bout The Thing and what is going to Happen with The Thing and what they will do or need to do because what if AI but oh no. And the first half an hour was basically a Clip Show!
How did they get so many good actors to sign up for this shit. Travis Trammell, Nick Offerman, Mark Gatiss, Hannah Waddingham, I am disappoint. Stop associating with this scientologist POS.

(I am not actively watching it. My bf has a terrible habit of finding THE WORST movies and watching them on weekends, like sub-5 star shit).
― Stoop Crone (Trayce), Saturday, 23 August 2025 02:38 (four days ago)
I still love 4-6 but I really don't think I'm gonna watch this one.
