the Enrique who acts like some kind of good taste gestapo (Enrique), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 08:44 (nineteen years ago)

Haha Enrique you asshole.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 08:48 (nineteen years ago)

yeah i know.

the Enrique who acts like some kind of good taste gestapo (Enrique), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 08:49 (nineteen years ago)

What's so awful about talking about smear tests? I do it all the time.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 09:13 (nineteen years ago)

Well, not all the time really, but what's so awful about that? Surely a grown man can handle hearing a bit of vadge talk.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 09:15 (nineteen years ago)

i 'can handle' lots of things, but given the *choice*...

Haha, yeah I'm troll who just happens to own semi-naked pics of him in an apron! Actually, the dude's tied up in my basement, his eyes kept open with those things out of Clockwork Orange, a steady stream of broccoli porn projected on the screen in front of him.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 11:51 (nineteen years ago)

I'd be curious to see this, can you tell me what threads should I look for? I bet he goes on and on with a feminist analysis of the obvious, juvenile psychology that is power fantasies featured in most soap-opera-like superhero comics, and I guess I could rather agree with this, but I would like to see how he manages to alienate everybody by being boring about it.

Joe Crocker (Joe Crocker), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 12:55 (nineteen years ago)

Laurel (Laurel), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 21:08 (nineteen years ago)

ILE thread started consisting of regular poster discussing something another person who doesn't post to the site has done to them, causing them annoyance. Old ILM reported "aghast".

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 21:08 (nineteen years ago)

The poster Rumpie doesn't actually seem like a bad person, I've never seen why anyone has much beef with her; I certainly do not. People discuss worse on ILX WTF.

suzy (suzy), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 21:46 (nineteen years ago)

but Rumpie was very bad because she didn't explicitly state what her threads were about in the thread titles (one about smear tests and one about air fresheners that mentioned the smell of shit iirc) meaning that some people had to click on them to find out, much to their obvious and vocal disgust. This apparently means Rumpie is fair game and deserves and ALL CAPS "I KNOW AN ANNOYING FUCKER JUST LIKE HER IRL" thread.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 22:14 (nineteen years ago)

look when you make rookie mistakes you get harped on. its like falling asleep drunk with your shoes on. it happens to us all. i for one havent seen an annoying rumpie thread about her bleeding or pooing in a while. you live, you learn.

city of gyros (chaki), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 22:16 (nineteen years ago)

you live, you learn.

you'd think, but I still fall asleep with my shoes on

Onimo (GerryNemo), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 22:21 (nineteen years ago)

Going back to Enrique's original post, it is inappropriate subject matter for office chit-chat. Whether it's a feminine issue or not, it is a medical one; and is therefore too intimate to be broadcast to strangers.

naus (Robert T), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 23:32 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah I put it in the category as talking about 'yer piles' or whatever. You have to ask the real reason someone wants to talk about that in the presence of people who aren't even their friends. Some sort of weird ego thing? It's like someone who swears constantly, you might get sick of their aggression - so you may also get sick of being privy to someone relating details which you prefer to deem intimate/private. I suppose it COULD become funny and endearing after a while...it's not necess. a right/wrong issue just one of personal preference. Opinion very much divided (but seems weighted towards 'please shut the fuck up kthnx' fortunately).

Konal Doddz (blueski), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 08:11 (nineteen years ago)

I relived every minute of a colleague's hysterectomy. Smear test chat is a walk in the park after that.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 08:13 (nineteen years ago)

Swearing isn't inherently aggressive.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 08:17 (nineteen years ago)

tbh what was most upsetting was that -- ok context, i work on a table-type-thing which comprises me and three girls -- she came over, stood over my chair, and discused the smear test with the three girls on my table. so it wasn't one person's TMI, it was four people's TMI, and that was kind of uncomfortable! the only assholish thing i did was make a horrible pun, really, cos it isn't cool to get into this kind of thing with people who aren't your friends.

the Enrique who acts like some kind of good taste gestapo (Enrique), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 08:18 (nineteen years ago)

So you didn't say TMI to them, and now we get to find out the psychic fallout? Get one office backbone.

suzy (suzy), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 08:23 (nineteen years ago)

Vernon Jackson (kate), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 08:25 (nineteen years ago)

yeah, there are intricacies involved there -- mainly the meta-discussion about the importance of being open, but also the 10 chicks vs 1 dude in office factor -- but lol at 'psychic fallout'.

RJG, you are always behind me commenting on my posts, and your contribution in this area is always stupid. You have no comeback to these facts.

Of course people are allowed to complain, but it is reasonable to point out that it is much more useful to complain at the people in the office, in the actual moment of TMI. I mean, you post and post on ILX about how you can't make any headway in the areas you need to get on in, so maybe assertiveness is the problem generally?

suzy (suzy), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 08:36 (nineteen years ago)

the Enrique who acts like some kind of good taste gestapo (Enrique), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 08:45 (nineteen years ago)

I more or less agree that it was mean to refer to another ILXor in thread title and use this as basis for complaining about what colleagues are talking about.

Of course there is already a 'bitch about colleagues' thread, but perhaps hard to find, at times.

Obv. I am fine with complaining about other people, both to their face and behind their back. Anyone here who disapproves of this could come across as hypocritical.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 09:49 (nineteen years ago)

yeah, it's all very well to say "that it is much more useful to complain at the people in the office" but that's all very well to say

it is useful in that it might stop future smearchat but also useful in that it might make things even less bearable in other ways and better just to complain about it to someone else and get it off your chest?

"psychic fallout" is a bit of a strong term, no? i mean, the entirety of ilx is basically "psychic fallout." using someone else's name might be questionable, but it's the same kind of complaining (actually much more mild) that goes occurs on the watercooler-type threads (where no one is told to get a backbone).

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 14:17 (nineteen years ago)

The watercooler threads aren't named after anyone (nor in general do they slag off anyone by name, with the obvious exception)
