Girls in polka dots - C/D?

Because they're everywhere now, so I suppose we should see what ILE thinks of them.

depends on the girl innit.

Enrique IX: The Mediator (Enrique), Tuesday, 6 June 2006 07:51 (nineteen years ago)

According to Madchen, who knows about these things, polka dots look good on everyone.

Polka dot summer panties are hotter than cartoon ones this year.

Mädchen (Madchen), Tuesday, 6 June 2006 08:11 (nineteen years ago)

I can only find one bad picture of me in polka dots. (I bet Marianna has zillions of great ones.)

Mädchen (Madchen), Tuesday, 6 June 2006 08:12 (nineteen years ago)

Dud. I see girls in polka dots and I just think uniformity, conformity, 1950s. But it gets me in trouble with my band when I say this.

Boys in polka dots, though = psychedelic bands of the mid 80s. Which is classic.

harmonic generator, haircuts are for losers (kate), Tuesday, 6 June 2006 08:13 (nineteen years ago)

Girls are better.

combine the two, and...

electric sound of jim (and why not) (electricsound), Tuesday, 6 June 2006 08:13 (nineteen years ago)

I sort of agree with Kate. One girl in a room wearing polka dots = beyond hot. A whole room full of them is ranging on dud. Especially if the room in question is an indie disco.

Marianna is exempt from this by virtue of being the first girl I know to wear polka dots regularly.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 6 June 2006 08:16 (nineteen years ago)

the answer to this question is so obvious that it doesn't really need a thread. (it's classic btw)

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 6 June 2006 08:18 (nineteen years ago)

i just think INDIE, ha ha

Konal Doddz (blueski), Tuesday, 6 June 2006 08:21 (nineteen years ago)

But indie girls = Classic. Do you see?

Who Are You... The Nerve... I Wanna Get Out, I Wanna Get Out (Dada), Tuesday, 6 June 2006 08:23 (nineteen years ago)

indie guilt does not apply where indie girls are involved

electric sound of jim (and why not) (electricsound), Tuesday, 6 June 2006 08:25 (nineteen years ago)

Well, Marianna has been wearing polka dots since, well... the year dot.

They've got awfully trendy lately, though. More than one girl in polka dots in any given room/stage is just too much, tho.

harmonic generator, haircuts are for losers (kate), Tuesday, 6 June 2006 08:26 (nineteen years ago)

They look cheap and nasty on me, as does ANY lace. Also bad flashbacks to the microdot Ann Taylor suit inflicted upon me by my mom once. However I do have a red silk cowl thing from the early '60s family vintage collection which is looking for rehousing (Marianna?)

Yes, loads.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 6 June 2006 09:03 (nineteen years ago)

Men in your 30s: I call bullshit on your nonfancying of SS at the time.

I adored Strawberry Switchblade but did not dress like them (my style was much more Corinne Drewery, very b/w '20s/'30s art photograph; probably couldn't wear black denim jacket with Cocteau's 'boy with a gun' painted on the back today though). Lawrence Felt-Denim used to go out with Rose, but I never even saw her back when I spent a fair amount of time with him (she was supposed to come to go-kart mozart but didn't, sez L). I remember when buying it on import I was pleased it was on the Bunnylabel.

Polka dots look good on females with boobs and curves, which is why they look shit on me. Try a dark colour and dime-sized white dots, Mand.

suzy (suzy), Tuesday, 6 June 2006 12:02 (nineteen years ago)

girls in polka dots, or out of polka dots for that matter, are always classic.

When polka dots work, classic.

Fluffy Bear (Fluffy Bear Hearts Rainbows), Tuesday, 6 June 2006 18:03 (nineteen years ago)

polka dots were named after the music to capitalize on polka music being the latest rage in the US during the beginning of the last century.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Tuesday, 6 June 2006 18:03 (nineteen years ago)

i love small polka dots.

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 6 June 2006 18:09 (nineteen years ago)

So polka dots are this year's diagonal stripes?

Tracey Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 6 June 2006 18:14 (nineteen years ago)

(I also like the teensy microdots. It's not often rocked.)

Tracey Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 6 June 2006 18:14 (nineteen years ago)

microdots are the best, especially if the material is kind of sheer.

u.s. equivalent of the high street seems to still be stuck on stripes. i welcome the dot revolution.

i've dreamt of rubies! (Mandee), Tuesday, 6 June 2006 19:59 (nineteen years ago)

I've been into the small dots (typically navy with blue) for about the past ten years. A few years ago I ventured into new color territory with a white with teeny tiny pink dots cap sleeve blouse. Yesterday I wore a white sheer empire waist with small black polka dots with a tie shirt along with black pin-striped pants. When I went shopping with Ally at H and M I noticed there were lots of dotted items, but I haven't really noticed any considerable polka dotted contingent. Also last night I ordered a black sheer with the little white dots polka dot blouse. I've never done the larger dots, but I am very taken with this dress http://www.target.com/gp/detail.html/ref=br_1_2/601-2115942-9264138?%5Fencoding=UTF8&frombrowse=1&asin=B000EXOYR8. I see it comes in a shirt also so maybe that would be safer.

Maltodextrin (Maltodextrin), Wednesday, 7 June 2006 07:30 (nineteen years ago)

A whole room full of them is ranging on dud. Especially if the room in question is an indie disco.

but that is surely dud by default regardless of whether polka dots are present on one girl, present on many girls, or absent!

(i say classic, usually, except for the pipettes)

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 7 June 2006 07:58 (nineteen years ago)

why not? they wear it well enough

Konal Doddz (blueski), Wednesday, 7 June 2006 08:44 (nineteen years ago)

because they can't sing! my flatmate saw the article about the pipettes in plan b and now has something of an irrational vendetta against them.

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 7 June 2006 08:49 (nineteen years ago)

That chess set is amazing!

The pipettes are nice.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Wednesday, 7 June 2006 08:55 (nineteen years ago)

Indie disco is generally a bad thing, but usually because I don't need to hear Blue Monday/The Only One I Know/Smells Like Teen Spirit etc ever again. The abundance of polka dots is neither here nor there. I personally think polka dots look a bit ick no matter WHO it's on. Most of the time it looks scruffy, but not in a good way. Like, you can be scruffy or smart, but polkas look like they're supposed to be smart, but look scruffy, or something. Anyway, they're not my cup of tea.

The chess set does rule so hard. It's also a gazillion pounds to buy, I guess.

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 7 June 2006 09:01 (nineteen years ago)

Abrasive chess sets rule, the more tactile the pieces the better in my book. Or did you mean the Pipettes are abrasive?

Johnny B Was Quizzical (Johnney B), Wednesday, 7 June 2006 09:07 (nineteen years ago)

oh my god that chess set does rule so much!!!

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 7 June 2006 09:09 (nineteen years ago)

because they can't sing! my flatmate saw the article about the pipettes in plan b and now has something of an irrational vendetta against them.

but this doesn't affect their polka dot wearing ability.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Wednesday, 7 June 2006 09:19 (nineteen years ago)

Dude, it's ALEX.

Hal! Jordan! HAL! JORDAN! (Barima), Wednesday, 7 June 2006 10:34 (nineteen years ago)

I haven't heard a note of their music but a quick Google search reveals they look very cute indeed in polka-dots. Will I get shouted at for admitting that?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 7 June 2006 10:53 (nineteen years ago)

OH YES.

(they = the Shimura Curves' mortal enemies. The more so because they're probably not that aware of the SCs)

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 7 June 2006 11:11 (nineteen years ago)

i don't think indie ROCK disco i.e. smells like teen spirit features a lot of polka dots.

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 7 June 2006 11:16 (nineteen years ago)

Pipettes ARE cute but suspiciously so, I think. I'm not quite sure what that means, mind you.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Wednesday, 7 June 2006 11:19 (nineteen years ago)

plastic surgery?

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 7 June 2006 11:20 (nineteen years ago)

the issue i have with the pipettes is that they can't sing, ie cannot even hit one fucking note, and yet they still try to do pretty harmonies, with awful results.

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 7 June 2006 11:23 (nineteen years ago)

they sound about as good as The Donnas on the ONE song i've heard. i'd have to hear them live to judge further.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Wednesday, 7 June 2006 11:26 (nineteen years ago)

xpost - You couldn't be more wrong.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 7 June 2006 11:26 (nineteen years ago)

(on reflection I'm probably wrong there)

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 7 June 2006 11:39 (nineteen years ago)

so you're saying that you're wrong in that he couldn't be MORE wrong? it is possible that more wrongness could be achieved? or am i wrong?

Konal Doddz (blueski), Wednesday, 7 June 2006 11:49 (nineteen years ago)

Yes, that statement is nowhere near the Lex's ceiling as regards wrongness. I should not be arguing with him about his tightly-policed list of acceptable voices, it will end in tears.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 7 June 2006 11:55 (nineteen years ago)

I wasn't aware I'd committed such a colossal faux-pas just then.

In another coincidence, I have just realised that I am wearing polka-dot boxers today. When I started this thread it hadn't even occurred to me that I owned such a garment. This is not hot.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 7 June 2006 12:03 (nineteen years ago)

xpost The few occasions I've gone to the indie night at the Zodiac in Oxford, there have been polka dots galore. My housemate met his current squeeze there, and she was wearing polka dots at the time.

A quick google revelas that the pipettes actually aren't that hot, polka dots or no. Does that make me wrong as well?

Johnny B Was Quizzical (Johnney B), Wednesday, 7 June 2006 12:04 (nineteen years ago)

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 7 June 2006 12:14 (nineteen years ago)

One of the Pipettes is hot. I think it might be the most talented one too, unfairly.

I like the Pipettes album and it reminds me of that "indie boy and girl meet dancing, indie boy and girl hang out being indie, indie boy and girl break up, indie boy and girl do it all again with new indie girl and boy" comic strip that I WISH I COULD FIND AGAIN.

I have to disagree here. The dots, combined with the right material, can make something more frilly and girly--which can add femininity to a more boyish shape (at least I thought so!)

I am wearing dots today. However, they are not polka dots, they are very swirly dots. Lots of little tiny dots swirling into spiral galaxies. SO I think it counts as swhirlies, not dots.

Andrew, don't shoot your mouth off about Shimuras stuff you know nothing about, please. Thanks.

harmonic generator, haircuts are for losers (kate), Thursday, 8 June 2006 08:33 (nineteen years ago)

I didn't really say anything except that you didn't like them. Which anyone looking at the official Shimura Curves site will spot before too long.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 8 June 2006 09:42 (nineteen years ago)

1) A review/critique of their music, saying that I don't particularly care for it != "they = the Shimura Curves' mortal enemies. The more so because they're probably not that aware of the SCs"

2) My views are just that - MY views. They are not indicative of the entirety of Shimura Curves as a group of 4 or 5 people.

I don't want this to turn into a "thing" because honestly, it is not.

Anyway, if you want to discuss this futher, please feel free to email me. Thanks.

I also have 'natural' coloured ones - flesh on flesh polka squares! But today, it is the black - even though I am slightly worried that they look silly against my MUSCLY CALVES. Really, they've got WORSE from the gym, I mean there's bloody DEFINITION of... whatever muscles are in the legs. How silly.

Miss Misery xox (MissMiseryTX), Thursday, 8 June 2006 13:31 (nineteen years ago)

If there's any type of girl that's definitely not my type, then it's that blonde girl/Joanna Lumley type.

(xx-post)

I can't fathom what they'd look like... Do you have any pics (not of you. necessarily)?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 8 June 2006 13:32 (nineteen years ago)

lauren (laurenp), Thursday, 8 June 2006 13:34 (nineteen years ago)

Flesh. Coloured. Fishnets. It's not rocket science.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 8 June 2006 13:37 (nineteen years ago)

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Thursday, 8 June 2006 13:39 (nineteen years ago)

Not really my thing, I think.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 8 June 2006 13:50 (nineteen years ago)

I mean, apart from anything else, whose flesh is actually that colour?

Unless you're mainlining carotene or... barbie plastic.

I Only Pretend To Like Spacerock (kate), Thursday, 8 June 2006 13:51 (nineteen years ago)

Those are awfully coral, really -- I have ones that are actually skin-colored. They're fine. Use one imagination.

Laurel (Laurel), Thursday, 8 June 2006 13:52 (nineteen years ago)

Christ, the things you find when googling for "coloured fishnets"!

Konal Doddz (blueski), Thursday, 8 June 2006 14:14 (nineteen years ago)

Why not, eh? Why not.

Flyboy (Flyboy), Thursday, 8 June 2006 14:23 (nineteen years ago)

Do Dots

Hal! Jordan! HAL! JORDAN! (Barima), Thursday, 8 June 2006 14:34 (nineteen years ago)

Although that might lead people to expect the Pipettes to be played. Which seems unlikely in the near future, although I haven't taken a comprehensive DJ poll.

Flyboy (Flyboy), Thursday, 8 June 2006 14:39 (nineteen years ago)

only a matter of time before there's a Justice remix

The Nicholson Baker phone sex book, Vox, contains a lengthy reflection on flesh colored (pointelle) tights. If thats anyone's thing.

Annabelle Lennox (Arachne), Thursday, 8 June 2006 14:48 (nineteen years ago)

xpost - So wait, to return to yesterday's puzzler from another angle - you like the Pipettes as people but not as artists. So why is the second more important than the first in dudding their polka dots?

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 8 June 2006 14:51 (nineteen years ago)

joey muck: yes

No! Das ist nicht mein setlist.

Flyboy (Flyboy), Thursday, 8 June 2006 14:54 (nineteen years ago)

did he dud the dots or the music itsself?

RoxyMuzak© (roxymuzak), Thursday, 8 June 2006 14:59 (nineteen years ago)

itself

RoxyMuzak© (roxymuzak), Thursday, 8 June 2006 15:00 (nineteen years ago)

What? Nazis nicked your setlist?

I Only Pretend To Like Spacerock (kate), Thursday, 8 June 2006 15:03 (nineteen years ago)

The dots, on the grounds of the music. It's all upthread - search for "irrational vendetta" :)

I have counted the amount of polka dots seen today: DOTS UP TO 11!
I am a goth and wearing all black, of course!!

-- Lucretia My Reflection (starrysdarkmaterial...), June 8th, 2006 2:16 PM. (Lucretia My Reflection) (later) (link)

11! must be really big dots.

ken c (ken c), Friday, 9 June 2006 09:09 (nineteen years ago)

I can't believe that the dots are sweeping England. Since this thread, I've realized that I have a lot more multivaried dotted items than I had thought--included a polka dot bathing suit.
