This is a field of knowledge I've never really ventured into. Still, the passion connoisseurs show assures me it's worthwhile to get a however shaky grounding in the field. (Like for French perfumes, volcanic eruptions, the history of spamming and Oceanian conifers.) Learn me, dear ILX!

At the age of 37, I still don't drive. Nonetheless I think I can start the thread with a car my parents once owned (before I was born): the VW Karmann-Ghia, which was apparently designed by illustrious Italian designers Ghia, built by illustrious German builders Karmann, and then plonked on top of a VW Beetle chassis. More car pr0n and I'll be eternally obliged!

Hahaa grimly THE TOAD of Citroën! (It is it, isn't it? I've actually been thinking about it recently.) I remember that one from childhood, but then it was quasi-ubiquitous -- yet, it made a Big Impression on me as a 7yo or thereabouts when I noticed (and NO grownups did) that the Outer Front Light (or was it the Inner?) TURNED IN THE SAME DIRECTION AS ITS WHEELS!

What's the actual name of this beast btw?

This is multi-xpost plz give me NAMES for future research peoples! And thanks!

http://www7.nationalgeographic.com/ngm/images/flashback/2006/large/0606.jpg

Studebaker was thinking big in 1931. On the field outside the auto company's Indiana proving ground, this wooden model of the President Four Season Roadster served as both advertisement and tourist attraction. More than twice the length of a normal Studebaker, the 11,000-pound (5,000-kilogram) giant could fit 50 people on its running boards and occasionally hosted an orchestra—the 25-piece Studebaker Champions—in its cockpit. But by September 1936, when this photo was published in the Geographic, the oversize roadster was no more. "Studebaker styling had progressed to a point where it no longer bore even a passing resemblance to the big car," says Andrew Beckman, archivist at South Bend's Studebaker National Museum. "In the spring of 1936, the fender was ignited, and in less than half an hour the President was reduced to ashes."

that 959 went for $225K in 1987. That's over $380K in today's dollars.

Ha, I nearly bought an Allegro VdP like that one a few years ago! It was light brown, w/a a dark brown vinyl roof, and actually looked cute. It was in good condition too. The owners wanted 400 quid for it, I was all set to buy it, when they decided that 900 quid was a more suitable value, so I passed.

O YES, THE QUARTIC STEERING WHEEL:

http://www.motoringpicturelibrary.com/docs/74-mplc.jpg

i mean. is it any wonder the british motor industry went down the tubes?

zillions of x-posts: yes, my contribution was the mighty citroen DS, a thing of such great beauty it makes me weep. lots of info on wikipedia.

sunny successor: yes, the seventies-style 280z is a beast, although i think the new ones are pretty neat too.

as i've said elsewhere, i really fancy getting me one of these in the next couple of years. i haven't been so excited by a new car in years.

The Brera is a nice-looking machine, for sure.

I also like the Ramond Loewy-designed Studebakers of the late fifties, the golden hawk:

and the avanti: (us equivalent of the scimitar, I think)

http://oldcarandtruckpictures.com/Studebaker/1962_Studebaker_Avanti-red-s.jpg

I would love an avanti with round headlamps (the square headlamps spoil the look of the thing)

Sixties Italian big saloon cars are really cool, especially the Flaminia Berlina:

I won't have a word said vs.the quartic wheel (nice pic by the way). There are many and more reasons why the british car industry sunk and none of them have to do with a squarish steering wheel.

omg that's beautiful

i can't wait until there are electric-solar-wind-foot-powered versions of all these cars so my love of this thread feels less shameful. (okay, i don't really feel all that much shame. but still.)

lots of them [figaros] around here (ok, 4)

where is "here", koogs? i've not seen one in the flesh and i'd love to.

when i was a small and car-obsessed lad, the lotus elan was my favourite thing EVER.

chris B: those BMWs are exquisite; the CS particularly. someone on my street has a 1980 3-series - black - and it's just an immaculate wee thing. i can't help feeling BMW lost it somewhere in the last few years - although not before they made that weird semi-estate thing the name of which escapes me. gaah. 1990s; mid to late, i think. three doors, VAST hood, looked utterly bizarre, went like a bomb.

That would be the Z3 M Coupe. I remember one of the early reviews of it (I forget which mag) started off with the line "In the history of this magazine, this is the first car that made the reviewer throw up twice."

Jim Wentworth, I drove a '62 Corvair wagon in the early '80s, as well as a '65 turbo coupe and a '66 convertible coupe (had a mid-engine police-special engine it for extra scary power, w/ a reversed transaxle).

god, the europa! i remember - again, as a car-obsessed kid - being fascinated by it; it was so WEIRD-looking.

wow. i'd forgotten all about it. must go on a wikipedia spree.

yes, the MGB/GT was a classic - i much prefer it to the midget (that was the name of the soft-top, wasn't it?) actually, it's not dissimilar to my beloved brera!

The Z4 coupe is wearing the future, btw: Metallic matt paint.

Abbott OTM, but I've always liked the AMC Eagle wagons. The bigger tires the better.

Ghia used to be a styling and design house like Pininfarina or Bertone. They got bought by ford and all Ghia is now is a trim level on Mondeos and Focuses.

Ed (dali), Friday, 16 June 2006 05:19 (nineteen years ago)

And that Ghia Cadillac was, sadly, a one-off showcar.

Don't forget the Delorean, stainless steel to the extreme. Of the 8 or 9 thousand made, 6000 are rumoured to still be working. Made in Northern Ireland but only for the North American market.
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/f/f0/De-Lorean-Left-allclosed.JPG/250px-De-Lorean-Left-allclosed.JPG

Prior to the Delorean we had the Canadian made (Saint John, NB) Bricklin.

Bricklins are slowwwwwwwer. The best thing about the 928 is that they haven't been discovered by collector scum yet and are therefore relatively afforable.

Anyway, I'm horrified that no one's mentioned the Citroen (Maserati) SM yet. Let me rectify that.
