japan is full of faceless masses of people and yakuza thugs and import models and everything is made of neon. his pure american values of fair play and honesty cause problems because japan is godless and only ruled by absolute sink-or-swim capitalism and conformism. he meets this yakuza dude with perfect unaccented english, who hates the world and eats animal crackers in every scene and acts like he wants to die and keeps giving him cars and drifting lessons. there's a beautiful scene where they drift thru one of those thousand-deep crowd of grey japanese extras and everything goes slowmotion and the world spins around them and faces slide past the windows while the kid and the australian girl hold their breath and look out in wonder or something and then the good yakuza dies when his rx-7 explodes and he has to go find the yakuza boss and beat the yakuza (and win the boss's grudging respect) with fair play and honesty and drifting.

Anyway, I saw this on Saturday and the plot was pretty much boilerplate "kid fucks up, gets sent to live with a relative, starts to screw up but ultimately redeems himself" crap. I giggled through the couple of moral speeches and "kid" interaction (the actors are all oooold) and counted down the minutes until AWESOME DRIFTING ACTION. It gets three Ebert-approved stars on drift action alone despite a major WTF moment right before the final race and a ridiculous cameo ending.

I really wanted this movie to be good because drifting is so intense & awesome, but every review besides this one said "the drift sequences are great, the movie is otherwise completely awful" and I've misplaced my taste for shitty movies
every review OTM

Wow. Still furious after all these years. I can't pass this up if The Rock is in it. I have a weird compulsion to see everything he's in, even if he hasn't really been in a great movie yet or even a good one. Though I strangely enjoyed "Faster" quite a bit even if it was completely mindless and stupid.

Manohla Dargis on Diesel v Rock fight scene:
They are the fast and, yes, the furious. Yet as these giants grasp each other's bulging muscles, their bald heads rearing in the frame with tumescent vigor, it's easy to imagine that they'd like some alone time. They don't get it, largely because the earth might spin off its axis if they did, though also because the director Justin Lin, having come of cinematic age in the maximalist era of Jerry Bruckheimer and Michael Bay, cleaves to the principle of more.
― your generation appalls me (Dr Morbius), Friday, 29 April 2011 14:57 (fourteen years ago)

Anyone actually see it?
I saw it in a packed theater who took the movie seriously for about 3 minutes (up until that ridiculous bus flip scene after which the reporter says "surprisingly nobody was hurt"), and then it sorta morphed into a comedy after the ridiculous train scene. Got a lot of laughs when they pulled up the Rock's FBI profile and he's doing the People's Eyebrow. In fact, the Rock's very first scene was incredible ("stay the FUCK out of my way!!" - to a total stranger).
Don't think this is much of a spoiler but this could have potentially been one of the greatest of all time in camp action movies if the Rock had jumped out of the bank vault in the end, if you've seen it you know what I'm talking about

5 was just a zippy, carefree popcorn heist movie with some suitably ridiculous performances and action sequences. Def benefits from the novelty of a franchise's fifth entry being the most successful and (from what I gather) watchable.

james wan's made two movies i really liked, so im at least curious to see what he does with F&F. lin's done some great work with the franchise but it kinda feels like he's said everything he could with these movies

i feel like he really hit his stride w/ this one, the flow, timing, interweaving of diff plot elements was perfected, didn't feel as clunky as 5... could be seen as a peak too, walk away before it gets stale

i thought 5 was a little smoother actually, this one dragged for me at points, wasnt really as involved in what was happening. still a good flickaroo

Within a whisper's breath of being the third highest-grossing film ever worldwide.

Yeah, but that gap hasn't been closing by very much over the last few weeks. Firmly entrenched as third in the 'Overseas' though.
I was talking to a friend about a week before it came out, wondering about the financial fate of other seventh films to compare it to: The Dark Knight, Diamonds are Forever, the next Superman vs Batman. Looks like it's outperformed the first two anyway.

thought for a second there that tokyo drift had somehow become the third-biggest-grossing movie of all time while i wasn't looking
my favourite thing about 7 was lucas black's cameo, which cut seamlessly from his fresh-faced performance in a scene from the original to the current-day lucas black who has apparently aged 25 years since 2006

So they're shooting second unit for the next one in downtown Cleveland, and just announced a ton of street closings right in the middle of the busiest parts of town for the next three weeks. This is just a month prior to the RNC happening downtown. RIP Cleveland.

https://jalopnik.com/tokyo-drift-had-to-hire-a-fall-guy-to-get-arrested-on-s-1844445611
The director explained: “When we went to shoot in Tokyo it’s a very different culture. They don’t give out film permits. We would be setting up a scene and people would just walk right through the set. I had this one guy, I thought he said he was me. I didn’t know what that meant.“I wanted to shoot in Shibuya, which is the most crowded place in Tokyo. The cops, they’re all so polite, so it takes ten minutes for them to come over and kick you out. They shut us down, I’d gotten all my shots, but I didn’t know they were going to arrest me. Another guy stepped up and said, ‘I’m the director.’ I found out that it was his job to take the fall for me. He went to jail for the night and I’m forever grateful.”
