Does anybody remember the earlier episodes where the regular cast's clubhouse was the basement of somebody's house? And there was an edition in a thunderstorm where the power went out? There was a cast member named ... I think... Diego?

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 20 June 2006 20:33 (nineteen years ago)

i'm sensing a pattern -- we didn't get nickelodeon until the late '80s, so anything that was on nick before like 1987 or '88 passed me by completely. same for a lot of what was on cable in the '80s.

What was the name of the show on PBS where a guy would take an older kids' book, like Bridge to Terabithia, and read excerpts from the book while, at the same time (or maybe it was just voiceover), drawing scenes from the story using pastels?

The show was probably 15 minutes long, and aired on weekday mornings (i.e. when you were home sick from school) in the early- to mid-1980s. It may well have originated in Canada, as many of those 15-minute shows did. And, I think the guy looked kinda like John Ratzenberger (Cliff) from Cheers. I don't know if they broadcast this everywhere -- I was watching it on WGBH out of Boston.

Anyone know the name of (or at least remember) this one? I'd really like to find the footage of him drawing/narrating Bridge to Terabithia -- he ended the story partway through by saying "But little did they know that within days, one of them would die..." Which totally stunned little 7-year-old me, back in the day.

don't let him show you his trolley tunnel xpost

gear (gear), Tuesday, 20 June 2006 21:02 (nineteen years ago)

(I would pay big bucks for a DVD of some of the stuff they used to show on those weekday mornings...some of the other things I remember:

- A fake news broadcast from medieval days, talking about the black plague and such;
- A real news broadcast, narrated by adults and done in seriousness, that had either geographic quizzes or anagram tests [or both?] between segments;
- A really intense segment, done on film, with (I think) lots of Moogy music, that ended with a kid dying in a car crash or something;
- And Slim Goodbody, of course!

And in general I just remember there being all kinds of awesome proto-Boards-of-Canada Moogy stuff around.)

(xpost)

Gear, I remember bits and pieces of Powerhouse, like Pepper getting drugged during an episode about sabotaged racehorses. And another where Lolo was locked in a sauna and had to send an SOS signal using a steam vent. And the one where Lolo and his grandfather were attacked by anti-semites.

Now if only I could find someone who remembers Kids Writes.

lindseykai (lindseykai), Tuesday, 20 June 2006 21:35 (nineteen years ago)

The show I meant above is apparently "Readit with John Robbins":

http://www.tv.com/readit/show/25160/summary.html?full_summary=1&tag=showspace_links;full_summary

that NEW ZOO REVIEW out-take clip... hahahahaha. god, i hated that show. this kinda redeems it. it's practically Meet the Feebles! (so. disturbing.)

i had completely forgotten about Great Space Coaster and Shirt Tales. I loved Shirt Tales! And I remember loving the intro and song to GSC but perhaps not so much the show. Fraggle Rock, to me, seems like a no brainer it was so important to my childhood - but i've met people who've never even heard of it! sad.

I'm in a little choir and I think we should sing a medley of these (and more) kid's tv show theme songs from the late70s/early80s. cheesey, yes, but choirs are kinda cheesey by nature.

Ah, when educational TV came with themes from the Salsoul library

-- Stupornaut (natepatri...) (webmail), Yesterday 1:43 PM. (natepatrin) (later) (link)

what an age. there has to be a connection here not just between PBS and disco, but also with electronic music and the nascent field of video art, as almost all the shows from this period use moogs or paik/abe synthesizers in their intros. figures that people on research grants at PBS stations would influence others involved in producing shows.

much love for the pointer sisters pinball song
...

-- Dan Selzer (danselze...) (webmail), Yesterday 10:13 PM. (Dan Selzer) (later) (link)

"Pinball Number Count" by the Pointer Sisters was a holy grail among diggers (there are loads of Sesame Street records), but the funny thing was it never actually existed in a commerical format. Ninja Tune figured this out, they licensed the original recordings and even stretched em out a little. you can buy it here: http://www.ninjatune.net/ninja/release.php?id=763

if anyone needs proof of Nate's Salsoul/essential disco assertion, check the b-side on that above recording: Cookie Monster as remixed by Larry Levan(!)

What was the name of the show on PBS where a guy would take an older kids' book, like Bridge to Terabithia, and read excerpts from the book while, at the same time (or maybe it was just voiceover), drawing scenes from the story using pastels?

I have a shockingly vivid memory of him illustrating a Choose Your Own Adventure book called "The Third Planet From Altair," but why he would throw a CYOA book in with all these young adult classics is beyond me.

In a similar vein - how about Commander Mark's "Secret City"? I loved that shit. Especially the way at the end of each episode he would add only one new thing to this one giant ridiculous drawing featuring all his wacky, vaguely Seussian trademarks...

Okay, help me out ILX: there was a PBS mini-series set in a bookless future and there was something about a bookmobile and the bad guys were called "wipers" and it had some totally tweaky synth music and I don't know, something like that. Does anyone have any idea what I'm talking about, or was this just some kind of childhood fever dream?

I have mentioned this elsewhere, but ten years ago I was dating the older brother of Paco from the Bloodhound Gang. Who was then working on his hiphop career. It was a bit ridiculous.

everybody who posted to this thread needs this:

http://www.numerogroup.com/catalog_detail.php?uid=01127

Tens of millions of people have seen these films. No one knows who made them.

Curled up on our couches in the wee hours of the morning, in reruns, and nostalgic You Tube forwards, filmmaker Al Jarnow has touched our lives and changed the way we look at the world without us ever knowing. Beginning with his work for a certain public television show that featured a big yellow bird, Al Jarnow captured life's scientific minutia and boiled it down for easy consumption between cookie eating monsters and counting vampires. Coupling time-lapse, stop motion, and cel animation with simple objects found in every day life, Jarnow deconstructed the world for an entire generation.

From the third floor of his Long Island gingerbread home, his mind wandered beyond the confines of educational programming. Delving into New York's avant-garde film scene alongside Harry Smith, Jonas Mekas and Stan Brakhage, Jarnow created a body of awe-inspiring films that remain in the collections of MOMA and Pompideau Center.

Employing the archival skills honed during the excavation of over 40 full-length albums, Celestial Navigations marks The Numero Group's first foray into the world of cinema. The 45 films collected have been transferred and color corrected from the original 16mm prints, along with fully remastered sound. Special features include a 30-minute documentary on Jarnow's creative process, as well as film playlists designed for both children and adults alike. The deluxe package includes a 60-page book loaded to the gills with essays, ephemera, storyboards, photos, and a complete film index, all housed in the iconic Numero slipcase.
