Season Two just premiered last night and it, just like most of the episodes from the first season, was ridiculously good. Anyone else excited?

Jesus Dan (Dan Perry), Monday, 26 June 2006 20:11 (nineteen years ago)

serious, the new episode is great from the first minute onwards. I'm not even going to try to qualify it to my tastes. It just amazed.

i swear it was better than the whole first season put together, and i LOVED that first season. it really exceeded all expectations. i think i laughed every five seconds!

I would love the season one DVDs. The show is complete genius.

This is the one thing that justifies the old Johnny Quest shit. Well, I guess a particular Harvey Birdman episode does too.

I first saw it drunk in a hotel room in New York by accident and was blown away. I don't know any other English people into it.

And there's a new series of Tom Goes to the Mayor! I find that show really relaxing, like self improvement hypnosis tapes or something.

So, so good. Jackson Publick keeps production notes on his Livejournal, some fun (non spoilery if you don't read comments) stuff:

Adult Swim also set up the Everybody's Free montage up really well, saying in the bump beforehand that the song cost an eighth of the episode's budget. and yeah, the 14 times montage was hilarious.

lemin (lemin), Tuesday, 27 June 2006 19:14 (nineteen years ago)

Adult Swim also deserves kudos for showing Return To Spider Skull Island before the season premier. The Scared Straight scenes, the Easy Rider helmets, "bring me ... MY BLUE WINDBREAKER!" - f*cking awesome.

literalisp (literalisp), Tuesday, 15 August 2006 22:43 (nineteen years ago)

the premiering crop of shows is looking great! Metalocalpyse is wonderful, that pilot to Lucy Daughter of the Devil was really good too, and what were the rest? oh right, Sol of the Mole Men and that one by the Sealab guys, those seem promising. I just hope Assy McGee can rise past it's one joke.

But yeah, the Venture Bros just keep delivering, episode after episode. I'm liking it more than anything Adult Swim's ever originally produced.

metalocalypse = standard dumb jokes about metal. could be about fifty times funnier.

that last venture bros episode on the other hand was fanfuckingtastic.

GOD PUNCH TO HAWKWIND (yournullfame), Wednesday, 16 August 2006 11:38 (nineteen years ago)

well, from the first two episodes, metalocalypse seems to be standard dumb jokes about metal housed in a show with a solid premise, great dialogue, absurd plot, damn good voice acting, and some awesomely kickass Brendan Small songs. in fact, the only truly dumb jokes I can remember just have to do with the ridiculous lyrics.

The fantastic music and sound design is a lot of that. Praise Thirwell!

absolutely - i just really miss the full extended title sequence. i mean, more Venture per episode is good, but the full song is just so EPIC!

GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 08:57 (seventeen years ago)

This season was a bit directionless, depite constantly threatening to go somewhere, but I'm excited for part two.

Raw Patrick, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 09:38 (seventeen years ago)

got my dr. girlfriend t-shirt yesterday and am so pleased with it i wore it two days in a row. seriously.

BATTAGS, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 00:55 (seventeen years ago)

this season had some issues with backstory overload, but calling it "directionless" seems weird to me, since they've always kinda flaunted all the show's constant red herrings and unresolved storylines and fake-outs, you can't really take the plot that seriously.

some dude, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 01:13 (seventeen years ago)

I love every episode of this show so much. It's the most perfect thing ever shown on television.

Mordy, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 01:15 (seventeen years ago)

The backstory overload was what made it seem directionless; that's a lot of stuff to cram in for (seemingly) not a lot of purpose.

Kinda embarassed that I fancy Dr Girlfriend.

Raw Patrick, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 08:09 (seventeen years ago)

Dr. Mrs. The Monarch costume = ever-expanding throne

I'm kind of sad the season's ending, because it's been good, but partially because there's pretty much no way they can have some kind of revelatory ending that will live up to what they've built with Jonas Venture Sr.'s past. But I've had a... good?... time being incredibly creeped out by all of these flashbacks.

Nhex, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 09:18 (seventeen years ago)

Dermot and his mother are going to be the key to the finale. That's my theory, anyway.

Oilyrags, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 19:14 (seventeen years ago)

I'm with Mordy; this last ep. was pretty perfect.

forksclovetofu, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 19:24 (seventeen years ago)

According to Jackson Publick's LiveJournal (it's it!), he & Doc Hammer have been working on S3 and S4 concurrently, so maybe that's partially the reason why things might seem a little rudderless for this season? I can kinda see why folks would have this complaint, but I've been rolling w/ the (awkward!) roffles so far.

And some dude OTM re: their playing fast & loose w/ continuity, tho I do like that they seem to have a general idea of where they think they're going, & what seem like red herrings & throwaway lines @ first actually "make sense" on a 2nd / 10th viewing.

The self-referential stuff (cf. the episode w/ the Ant-Man knock-off that has Brock rattling off pint-sized hero names) could be given a rest, tho. My one (other) beef = not enough Dr. Orpheus solo; too much Orpheus w/ the Order of the Triad & playing 2nd fiddle to the gay dude w/ the tonsure (no homophobe).

David R., Wednesday, 20 August 2008 19:27 (seventeen years ago)

Just watched season 1 over three days, enjoyed it a great deal. There's nothing hugely original about it, but the tone is just right, the design is perfect and the guy is obviously unbelievably well-versed in Silver Age lore. Also there's a genuine undercurrent of pathos which is missing from other superhero spoofs.

I'm super psyched about new episodes, but at the same time, getting the S3 DVD a week before the S4 premiere kinda reminded me that rewatching episodes of this show is almost always way more fun than staying up til midnight and seeing an episode for the first time, being confused about the plot half the time, and not being able to laugh really loudly at the best jokes w/o waking anybody up.

The Venture family's personal helper robot. H.E.L.P.eR. is an acronym for Humanoid Electric Lab Partner Robot. He was created by Dr. Jonas Venture Sr. to look after his son Rusty, but now assists Brock in looking after Dean and Hank. He does not speak, but rather communicates via electronic beeps that are more or less understood by the Venture clan, similar in many ways to R2-D2. Though he has very sensitive feelings, the Ventures often treat him like an old appliance or pet.

About how I feel sometimes!

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 20 October 2009 20:42 (sixteen years ago)

Although I do thank you for this comparison versus the actual Ned in the show, it seems:

Ned (voiced by Christopher McCulloch): Sally and Cody's mentally-handicapped cousin, who has been transformed into a "giant callus" with three-inch thick skin. He has a pale orange, lumpy appearance. He is stronger than ordinary people, but not nearly as strong or impervious to harm as the Thing.

"Escape to the House of Mummies Part II" was hilarious not just because it referred to a Part I that didn't exist but also promised a Part III that also didn't exist. There was a "previously" montage at the beginning so that it kinda made sense (or telegraphed that it wasn't making sense on purpose), though.

I have learned it is possible for me to cheer and groan at the same time.

I can't help but wonder who the other Councilmen are now. So far, the Guild leadership seems to have consisted of Bowie, Iggy Pop, Klaus Nomi, Brian Eno, and now (tinyurl'd to avoid spoilers) <a href="http://tinyurl.com/cnp87p";>this guy</a> and <a href="http://tinyurl.com/ydq4kvd";>this guy</a>.

A good few episodes actually - I think my least favourite would be the first, and I dug that.

three weeks pass...

At that cut before the end credits I screamed DAMN YOU!! at the TV set.

Pretty good season. A few bumps, but overall I liked it more than last year (so far, we've still got another eight eps for next year apparently). They handled the deep character/backstory stuff much better than the last season, without a huge build-up and letdown. The show can't come back too soon.

The Viceroy got all the DVDs for xmas. I can't believe I never watched this shit before. I think the thing that made me laugh the hardest was when Jonas & co were a Voltron & the Monarch called them "retarded." Jonas gives a little speech on how that's a hurtful word. It took me back to when I used to work helping developmentally delayed kids & any time an employee dropped the r-word.

Also Dean saying shaking hands with Jonas was like "shaking hands with a chicken dinner."

The Quizboy episode was also really fucking incredible.

I'm glad the animation got better after the first season – some of the stuff from then just looked like lazy Flash motion.

technically what aired this year was the first half of season 4 and next year is the other half, so i feel like it's kinda premature to call those 8 episodes a season or compare them to previous seasons...i really hope Brock will be back in a more prominent role next year, though.

EUKANUBA CRAZY DOG JUMPIN THRU YO HURDLE (some dude), Monday, 4 January 2010 19:58 (sixteen years ago)

yeah, it felt unfinished. I should really do a marathon some time.

lazy cold meat and chocolate seasonal mentality (forksclovetofu), Monday, 4 January 2010 19:59 (sixteen years ago)

but even judging just these eight episodes to last season's output, i'm already happier with it. true, it could tank, but since Brock is probably back in the picture, i think things are looking good

Nhex, Monday, 4 January 2010 20:35 (sixteen years ago)

oh i have no doubts of the show's vision. even some of the new episodes that i wasn't totally into the first time around really improved on the second viewing.

I love how Hank + Dean now represent two different sides of the ideal adventurer-scientist. Hank is the strong daring one and Dean is the smart inventive one. I always thought that Dean took after his father (and grandfather) and Hank didn't, but now I realize they're a dialectic!

Mordy, Saturday, 25 September 2010 02:52 (fifteen years ago)

I am a lot more worried about Dean than I am about Hank.

Mormons come out of the sky and they stand there (Abbbottt), Saturday, 25 September 2010 02:58 (fifteen years ago)

I am also REALLY ANNOYED at the split half-season 4 box set...Are they never going to do an entire season 4 box by itself? It just reeks of a way to rake in extra $$$ at the fans' expense.

gah... i need to remember to not type anything while super tired.
anyways, here's the blog entry i was talking about.
http://jacksonpublick.livejournal.com/27886.html

We were originally going to hold off on producing any DVDs of Season 4 until all 16 episodes were complete and we could release one massive boxed set, but given the massive amount of time between seasonal halves, that's pretty unlikely now. The current plan is to release a standard def DVD of the first 8 episodes sometime between July and October (depending on how quickly we get our acts together to record commentary, dig up special features and design the packaging), and then release both a standard def DVD of the second 8 episodes and a Blu-Ray of the entire 16 episode season in March. But that's all I know right now, so don't ask me any questions about it.

Unfortunately, it’s true: #VentureBros has been canceled. We got the highly disappointing news a few months ago, while we were writing what would have been season 8. We thank you, our amazing fans, for 17 years of your kind (and patient) attention. And, as always, We Love You.

So, as it must to all, cancellation has come for The Venture Bros. The pilot aired 17 years ago, which means the show was almost old enough to vote. It was one of the great gifts of my life & career. The fans were, quite simply, the best. Thank you, everybody. Go. Team. Venture! pic.twitter.com/MPMAvWS6Z4
