This episode was ridiculously good (esp. the flashback montage), and I loved how the Dean / Hank issue was resolved. And the "new" intro! I was hoping for a Brotherhood of Evil Bad-Brahs, tho, if only for MORE WHITE NOISE! But there's plenty of time for that.

Jackson Publick said in March that "you won't be seeing any new episodes until probably this time next year," so I guess Spring '08. They've been greenlit for both a 3rd and a 4th season already, though.

I rewatched the Quizboy episode from last week before the new one came on last night. The "IQ" logo for the show is hilarious.

Best toon on tv, fer real and fer certain.

This cartoon is on a friend of mine's faves list, so I can't bring myself to watch it, since without exception, every single other cultural-kinda thing he likes is profoundly awful. He's like an anti-guide to culture for me.

alright, sunday's episode (first of a two parter) was the funniest thing they've done this season.

This season was a bit directionless, depite constantly threatening to go somewhere, but I'm excited for part two.

got my dr. girlfriend t-shirt yesterday and am so pleased with it i wore it two days in a row. seriously.

this season had some issues with backstory overload, but calling it "directionless" seems weird to me, since they've always kinda flaunted all the show's constant red herrings and unresolved storylines and fake-outs, you can't really take the plot that seriously.

I love every episode of this show so much. It's the most perfect thing ever shown on television.

The backstory overload was what made it seem directionless; that's a lot of stuff to cram in for (seemingly) not a lot of purpose.

Kinda embarassed that I fancy Dr Girlfriend.

I'm kind of sad the season's ending, because it's been good, but partially because there's pretty much no way they can have some kind of revelatory ending that will live up to what they've built with Jonas Venture Sr.'s past. But I've had a... good?... time being incredibly creeped out by all of these flashbacks.

Dermot and his mother are going to be the key to the finale. That's my theory, anyway.

I'm with Mordy; this last ep. was pretty perfect.

According to Jackson Publick's LiveJournal (it's it!), he & Doc Hammer have been working on S3 and S4 concurrently, so maybe that's partially the reason why things might seem a little rudderless for this season? I can kinda see why folks would have this complaint, but I've been rolling w/ the (awkward!) roffles so far.

And some dude OTM re: their playing fast & loose w/ continuity, tho I do like that they seem to have a general idea of where they think they're going, & what seem like red herrings & throwaway lines @ first actually "make sense" on a 2nd / 10th viewing.

The self-referential stuff (cf. the episode w/ the Ant-Man knock-off that has Brock rattling off pint-sized hero names) could be given a rest, tho. My one (other) beef = not enough Dr. Orpheus solo; too much Orpheus w/ the Order of the Triad & playing 2nd fiddle to the gay dude w/ the tonsure (no homophobe).

I wish that guy didn't have Master Shake's voice; I can't hear him as anyone else now.

this show is pretty good! i just started season 2.

Just watched season 1 over three days, enjoyed it a great deal. There's nothing hugely original about it, but the tone is just right, the design is perfect and the guy is obviously unbelievably well-versed in Silver Age lore. Also there's a genuine undercurrent of pathos which is missing from other superhero spoofs.

Finally watching this.

Halfway thru watching the 2nd season, and I've concluded that the Monarch is the best character on the show.

It's between him and Brock. There are some great minor characters as well, like Morpheus' gay monk friend.

Lots of dicking around with canon and time and all sorts of weird continuity stuff.

I didn't realize this was back again! What a happy surprise!

I'm super psyched about new episodes, but at the same time, getting the S3 DVD a week before the S4 premiere kinda reminded me that rewatching episodes of this show is almost always way more fun than staying up til midnight and seeing an episode for the first time, being confused about the plot half the time, and not being able to laugh really loudly at the best jokes w/o waking anybody up.

Especially since this week's episode was kind of by design easier to follow once you've seen the whole thing.

it's totally a tivo show; you watch it once just to see it and then twice more to get all the little jokes and continuity

Ned Helper

Got the eye color right! Mostly.

The Venture family's personal helper robot. H.E.L.P.eR. is an acronym for Humanoid Electric Lab Partner Robot. He was created by Dr. Jonas Venture Sr. to look after his son Rusty, but now assists Brock in looking after Dean and Hank. He does not speak, but rather communicates via electronic beeps that are more or less understood by the Venture clan, similar in many ways to R2-D2. Though he has very sensitive feelings, the Ventures often treat him like an old appliance or pet.

Although I do thank you for this comparison versus the actual Ned in the show, it seems:

Ned (voiced by Christopher McCulloch): Sally and Cody's mentally-handicapped cousin, who has been transformed into a "giant callus" with three-inch thick skin. He has a pale orange, lumpy appearance. He is stronger than ordinary people, but not nearly as strong or impervious to harm as the Thing.

Not as great as last week's craziness but still fun. I want to see more adventures of that squad with Ghost Robot (aka Weatherbot)!

I love that the boy loving superhero was played by Kevin Conroy, who did the voice of Batman in the animated series.

Man I haven't seen this show in aaaaaaaaaages, I loved it so much. Unsurprisingly I can't remember many details of the show, though sometimes I still think back on that 12-ft-tall giant alien/robot thing who follows the Ventures around observing/studying them--"IGNORE MEEE!!!"--and god I just giggle and giggle.

Oh man, if I'd realized ahead of time it was Kevin Conroy it would've been even funnier.

haha "IGNORE ME!" is a pretty common exclamation in my household (also "THAT WAS A WEIRD ONE!")

HOOS i think season 2 is really the last time you'd be able to easily drop in on a random episode and not be too confused to enjoy it

I consider myself something of an aficionado and it REGULARLY confuses me. It's part of the appeal.
At least once, they've had part 2 of an episode that had no part one with no explanation as to why the head of edgar allen poe was fighting zombies.

I sold Thirwell a short stack of CDs at the FMU record fair, including Teiji Ito's King Ubu.

"Escape to the House of Mummies Part II" was hilarious not just because it referred to a Part I that didn't exist but also promised a Part III that also didn't exist. There was a "previously" montage at the beginning so that it kinda made sense (or telegraphed that it wasn't making sense on purpose), though.

first time through, I thought it was referring to an episode i had missed!

I thought the Monarch shouting "ANYWAY!" in his monologue at the beginning of the most recent ep was really funny.

The Viceroy got all the DVDs for xmas. I can't believe I never watched this shit before. I think the thing that made me laugh the hardest was when Jonas & co were a Voltron & the Monarch called them "retarded." Jonas gives a little speech on how that's a hurtful word. It took me back to when I used to work helping developmentally delayed kids & any time an employee dropped the r-word.

Also Dean saying shaking hands with Jonas was like "shaking hands with a chicken dinner."

The Quizboy episode was also really fucking incredible.

technically what aired this year was the first half of season 4 and next year is the other half, so i feel like it's kinda premature to call those 8 episodes a season or compare them to previous seasons...i really hope Brock will be back in a more prominent role next year, though.

yeah, it felt unfinished. I should really do a marathon some time.

but even judging just these eight episodes to last season's output, i'm already happier with it. true, it could tank, but since Brock is probably back in the picture, i think things are looking good

oh i have no doubts of the show's vision. even some of the new episodes that i wasn't totally into the first time around really improved on the second viewing.

oopsy... should have posted in this thread, instead of the one on ilm. anyways, the 2nd half of seaosn 4 starts tonight. should be great.

I love how Hank + Dean now represent two different sides of the ideal adventurer-scientist. Hank is the strong daring one and Dean is the smart inventive one. I always thought that Dean took after his father (and grandfather) and Hank didn't, but now I realize they're a dialectic!

I am a lot more worried about Dean than I am about Hank.

I am also REALLY ANNOYED at the split half-season 4 box set...Are they never going to do an entire season 4 box by itself? It just reeks of a way to rake in extra $$$ at the fans' expense.

We were originally going to hold off on producing any DVDs of Season 4 until all 16 episodes were complete and we could release one massive boxed set, but given the massive amount of time between seasonal halves, that's pretty unlikely now. The current plan is to release a standard def DVD of the first 8 episodes sometime between July and October (depending on how quickly we get our acts together to record commentary, dig up special features and design the packaging), and then release both a standard def DVD of the second 8 episodes and a Blu-Ray of the entire 16 episode season in March. But that's all I know right now, so don't ask me any questions about it.

Last night's finale was kind of perfect - that "like a friend" montage was transcendent, particularly that last image in space.

yeah, amazing stuff. Made up for the monthlong delay...now we just have to wait a coupla eons for S5.
