Srsly, I'm like 10X more excited about your plot than I am about my plot. I'll totally help you get it cleared out this weekend and we can transplant stuff from my garden into yours. That plot is going to be FANTASTIC!

Stephen just let them dry out--they should be fine. Make sure they're not sitting in a saucer of water, though, 'cause then you'll have unhappy tomatoes and whole lot of tiger mosquitos.
The mosquitos are a real bitch at the garden, Ally, so come prepared with DEET. Actually just start at my house and we'll see what all garden shit we can outfit you with and can just fill the bathtub with DEET and bathe in it.

The biggest thing re: belly would probably be to cut back on booze consumption, yeah. Especially beer (and other carbonated beverages) because it causes stomach bloating. Though obv you shouldn't replace the beer with like a pint of vodka a night. But you don't have to cut it out, just cut back. You already seem pretty active in general, you can try to throw in a more regimented exercise routine but I'd imagine it's just the unfortunate side effects of fun :( FWIW I get like really disgusting and mushy if I do too much beer (like, more than once or twice a week beer) so I pretty much blame it for most weight gain on otherwise totally thin and active ppl.

I didn't quite have the full Komi experience because it was preceded by happy hour bites at, er, Chef Geoff's (where I met a G-man hubby of one of the lawyers). I had some very nice mezzethakia and great black macaronia with tuna and pepper. The watermelon wasn't all that special, but I hadn't expected it to be. The amuse-bouche (a date with something I don't remember inside) was a winner.
Surfergirl isn't especially interesting when she's not being a surfer. I like bellies on 'athletic' girls. Ok, I like anything on 'athletic' girls. Maybe I should become 'athletic'.

― Mary (Mary), Monday, 3 July 2006 18:27 (nineteen years ago)
Mary we tried to watch the fireworks from the Cathedral last year; this went well for all of thirty seconds, whereupon the rising smoke completely obscured the actual bright twinklies. I think my fireworks plan may involve watching them on TV--how sad is that?

The main thing is though that you can kind of see fireworks from most anywhere, at least a little bit (in NYC and DC) so it's kind of a one-time only thing to do, in my mind.
oh and I am refusing to congratulate q because it seems more like a funeral march is required by the way this news was given. I might reconsider if it leads to happier job outlook. Though hey congrats on a raise presumably!

I have always enjoyed Mall fireworks when sufficiently centrally-located, i.e from the Monument grounds, which feels like they're directly overhead and is an all-day commitment for a big group no longer justified in the Bush-era absence of the Sylvan Theater roots music concerts (Boo), or for the more placid experience, from the Ellipse, which is pleasanter when you're happier about the occupant of the house up the street, but is a good view without insane crowds.

Gerrard did have an unfortunate shot on goal, but fellow ilxor poster and Irishman Ronan assures me that he merely had a bad day.
Plus, the English are apparently shit at those shots.

Grilled with a vengeance, the ribs were quite good, if not quite tender enough...it was the first time I attempted them on the new grill, so I wasn't expecting perfection. All were pleased, except my tummy this morning.
The crazy part was when we went to go watch fireworks. We went up into the hills overlooking the Rose Bowl, and had a view of the entire NE side of the city and surrounding areas. There were fireworks all the way off in the distance, and some in the nearby towns. It was like a giant artillery simulation. Then, when the fireworks started at the Rose Bowl below us, they were cool, but I was a little confused and felt out of place. Then I realized what it was...I was looking DOWN on fireworks instead of looking up at them. Crazy.
Three weeks until the bar exam. I am through the stress tunnel and am stomping my way to passage...or at least completion.

Pearls Optional, Drinks Required on Exclusive Web Site
A new social-networking Web site is doing something that not many of its brethren have been able to do: It’s attracting people over 25.
Like Facebook.com and MySpace.com, LateNightShots.com allows users to build a profile, make digital friends, and post photos. The twist: This site is by invitation only and focuses, as the name implies, on drinking.
“If anyone could sign up, it would be a big turnoff,” says 25-year-old cofounder Reed Landry, who guesses that many of the 3,000 registrants wouldn’t be caught dead on MySpace, which is open to anyone.
“The most interesting thing to me is the number of people in their thirties who have signed up,” Landry says.
The exclusivity of the site and its focus on drinking—one of the first things new members are asked is to list their favorite watering holes—have evoked a little digital wrath. The blog Why I Hate DC bashed the site for its upscale exclusiveness: There is a space in one’s profile to list social affiliations and country clubs, and the most popular bar mentioned is Georgetown’s Smith Point, a favorite of the blue-blazers-and-pearls crowd. Hipster hangouts like Wonderland and Bar Pilar don’t appear here.
Any member can invite new members, which may help the site move away from its Georgetown focus.
Although Landry admits to not having much control over what direction it takes, he says one thing is certain: It won’t be open to the masses.

OK so there are some molecules, such as those in peanut, to which some people are genetically predisposed to freak out over. For these people, exposure to peanut kicks off a massive immune response (immune response=inflammation), even though the molecule is completely harmless. It's the inflammation that makes it hard to breath and yeah you can die. Or you can have a shitload of industrial-strength antihistamine pumped into you and carry around an epi pen for the rest of your life.

Products liability is typical of only kind of class action, known as the "mass tort." These are most typically pursued b/c it is a superior way to handle a large number of very factually similar claims.

Hello Tracer Hand. Welcome to the DC United thread. Celtic is just singular? How confusing. What team do you support?
I used to think DC United was a stupid name, but you must admit it beats the New York Red Bulls.
And DCU has Freddy Adu.

28. Making Pancakes Six -year-old Brandon decided one Saturday morning to fix his parents pancakes He found a big bowl and spoon, pulled a chair to the counter, opened the cupboard and pulled out the heavy flour canister, spilling it on the floor. He scooped some of the flour into the bowl with his hands, mixed in most of a cup of milk and added some sugar, leaving a floury trail on the floor which by now had a few tracks left by his kitten. Brandon was covered with flour and getting frustrated He wanted this to be something very good for Mom and Dad, but it was getting very bad. He didn't know what to do next, whether to put it all into the oven or on the stove and he didn't know how the st ove worked!. Suddenly he saw his kitten licking from the bowl of mix and reached to push her away, knocking the egg carton to the floor. Frantically he tried to clean up this monumental mess but slipped on the eggs, getting his pajamas white and sticky. And just then he saw Dad standing at the door Big crocodile tears welled up in Brandon's eyes. All he'd wanted to do was something good, but he'd made a terrible mess. He was sure a scolding was coming, maybe even a spanking. But his father just watched him. Then, walking through the mess, he picked up his crying son, hugged him and loved him, getting his own pajamas white and sticky in the process! That's how God deals with us. We try to do something good in life, but it turns into a mess. Our marriage gets all sticky or we insult a friend, or we can't stand our job, or our health goes sour. Sometimes we just stand there in tears because we can't think of anything else to do. That's when God picks us up and loves us and forgives us, even though some of our mess gets all over Him. But just because we might mess up, we can't stop trying to "make pancakes" for God or for others. Sooner or later we'll get it right, and then they'll be glad we tried... I was thinking. .. and I wondered if I had any wounds needing to be healed, friendships that need rekindling or three words needing to be said, sometimes, "I love you" can heal & bless! Remind every one of your friends that you love them. Even if you think they don't love back, you would be amazed at what those three little words, a smile, and a reminder like this can do. Just in case I haven't told you lately... I LOVE YA!!! Please pass some of this love on to others....suppose one morning you were called to God; do all your friends know you love them? Send this to everyone you love, and send it back to the person who sent it to you. And never stop "making pancakes."

Jason: Mancake is band that is pure fun. I sing, Shelby plays guitar, Eric Astor plays drums, and Mike Schliebaum plays bass. We play shows every so often, usually shows that I set up. I usually wear some sort of costume and accost the audience. One time we were playing these 2 kids, Austin and Nathan, made 80 pancakes and threw them at the audience while we played. It caused $1000 damage to the place, it was crazy. The live show is fun but my lyrics are very serious. I write extremely sarcastically. Some of the topics I write about are addiction, religion, and the scene. But they need to be interpreted to get the true meaning, usually.

kind of makes it unlikely that anyone's going to give too much of a shit about this or think poorly on France, in terms of Zidane's legacy or whatever else a couple of people are handwringing about. dar1a, dude in bar who was harassing you is balls-out insane and probably had no idea who the hell Zidane was until the ESPN dudes told him ZZ was the most important man IN THE WORLD EVER etc. I mean that's ridiculous and you should've considered "doing a Zidane" on the jerk.
Tom had on his ZZ jersey so he tried to fake headbutt a Materazzi on the street. They thought it was awesome.
Too bad about the PKs though, that made me sad enough to go watch Superman Returns* :(

Ally, I'm relieved to hear the dress wasn't a Lily--I feared I was losing my Lilydar for a moment.
Also, my Colombian coworker goes to the occasional DC United game and she assures me that it's not crowded, that you can sit close to the front, and that you can see everything crystal clearly. Perhaps she just has superior vision though.
Anyway, DC soccer fans, let's see "Once in a Lifetime" the movie about the NY Cosmos in the 70s, which I believe opens this Friday at the E.

The other really really good nursery (better even than Johnson's) is American Plant Food Company. They have one location on River Road just off the beltway, and one location confusingly also on River Road, but a couple of miles east, just before the intersection of River and Little Falls Turnpike. Warning: it is entirely possible to drop ridiculously mad cash at both Johnson's and APC.
Also congrats to Brian!
Funny, the words "promotion" and "raise" never entered into the "dialogue" with my big boss, but if paperwork to that end doesn't show up on my desk by the end of the month, I am going to throw a diva-style fit!

Should you take that comment as:
A) "it's so nice to see a dc band that's [into the music, not making the scene]"?
B) "it's so nice to see a dc band that [doesn't seem like they give a shit]"?
C) "it's so nice to see a dc band that's [so much cooler than me, I've got to say something PROFOUND to this singer/guitar player who just jammed his head off for my LOW,LOW admission price]."
D) You guys would rule if only you wore stretch leather body suits.
Anyway, fuck 'em. You guys are in the later stages of album production, you gig regularly, none of you have serious drug habits, and you've all got day jobs. You sound quite professional and careerist to me, but you evidently fooled this clown.

FWIW I think the Fake Accents have a lot more drone and hard shit going down than a lot of the jangly bands I'm talking about, plus I don't despise the sound of ZR's voice. I feel I should clear this up since I'm basically taking a hardline stance against post-postpunk guitar white guys.

I dig the Antrim for various reasons. They are short for one thing--he sort of defies the conventional wisdom that you have to write doorstops to be an Important Modern Writer. Very admirable, seriously. The Hundred Brothers is ridiculously madcap and funny and great, like a very long Barthelme story. Haven't read Verficationist though I need to. I read the NYer excerpt and like it. (This one is for you Ally! It takes place in a PANCAKE HOUSE!) His first one I read years ago and don't remember a thing about it. I've loved the memoir stuff that I've read in the New Yorker as it's come out over the past few years.

Cyclops = Goody two-shoes laserface who landed Jean b/c she didn't have any other viable options at the time (Beast? Iceman?), and then got seduced by Emma Frost b/c of Jean. Stupic psychic bitches and their intrigues. Scott Summers = toolbox former jock, reminiscent of Emilio Estevez' character in The Breakfast Club.

Maybe youn has booked a Tabard room wisth a shared bath; I've had a shared bath there on a number of occasions, and it was never a problem vis a vis access or cleanliness.

Comic books are a potentially endless source of discussion and debate, ranging from "Why is Cyclops Such a Tool?" to "The Impact of Mutants "Passing" as Humans: The X-Men v. The Morlocks."
I guess that a number of the regulars here are indie music makers, ergo, are interested therein.

i was just trying to add, as one who grew up in the city during its more notorious years, that i can't imagine things are really that bad. as allyzaz noted, it appears that it is just a few crimes in the small "right" part of town.
the real estate comment was just a hope that i can one day return to d.c. and pay less than i do in new york. right now that is far from the case. i would like a pool, although i do have a grill (it's not that gangsta, tho :( )
xpost- i hope the st. ex jukebox stays safe dude.
how bout them nats?

i hope things turn around after the break. i'm going to try to catch a game when i swing through town.
As for the nyc/dc housing debate, i've been living quite comfortably and safely in washington heights for under $850. not the most desirable location, but i like the brownstone apartment i found. can't really find a comprable deal in d.c. but i'll be looking again in may. xpost- sorry i'm so defensive, just new to the board

Because it's true? one six oh I got your back.
Also Washington Heights is totally awesome, have you been to Christ Coffee? That was across the street from my house.

Gabbneb: try 2X for rent prices, by your metric vs. Ally & I, and 3X-4X for people who bought around that time. Flip it.

Christ Coffee is on 168th, near Amsterdam. There's also a place called Jesus Taco but I don't remember where that was exactly.
What no one keeps in mind when they talk about the cost of NYC versus (blank) is that they purely look at housing prices and nothing else. That being said I know several not-rich people who have recently purchased large-enough houses in Brooklyn so I don't even buy the housing argument re: DC because I couldn't buy a similar house for the same money in, like, Reston right now.
xpost Tom please keep in mind our current rent at 2x gabb's price in the exact same location is considered a massive steal by all and sundry!!!

xpost gabbneb I repeat: we're paying 2x what you did and it is considered a drop dead steal by everyone we know. Most people are paying 3-4x what you did (for 1bds, I didn't look into studios at all).
In arlington our pretending-to-be-a-1bdrm was $1200 and the dude raised it when we left.

a buddy of mine recently moved to hobart pl. (off of georgia). when i was a middle schooler at alice deal that was like the most badass place kids would tag up in their textbooks. it was a pretty rough drug block. point is he splits a 3 bedroom for around $2000 and the block is rife with hill types. the park in the middle block demarcates the old resident from the new. it's altogether perplexing.
i just wonder what's left for your middle income resident?

groceries are a tossup. in the heights we have c-town (crappy produce, good deals on most goods), but as you inch downtown the quality iproves and the prices shoot up.

― FAN DEATH (teenagequiet), Thursday, 13 July 2006 18:55 (nineteen years ago)
xpost oh dude, groceries are totally the same both places. Transport is a little harder to define because NYC has only one rate for any trip while DC has variable rates? But then NYC has the unlimited card which then makes the rate variable depending on how often you ride and DC has no unlimited card etc etc. That being said there are way more subway stops than metro stops so you have a far lesser chance of paying your $2 and then having to walk 1.5 miles or drive the rest of your journey so it depends on how you look at it. I don't drive so I need public transport so I have to live near a metro which is retarded expensive here, but I never had to think about whether I'd be near a subway in NY.
