it's probably time to start an 06/07 thread, no? given that all we're discussing now is preamble to next september.

OK then! Um, so I'm depressed at the thought of Mike Ribeiro starting the season as our no.2 centre.

Oh, and Niedermayer/Pronger is gonna be one hell of a pairing.

alex in montreal (alex in montreal), Tuesday, 4 July 2006 16:37 (nineteen years ago)

Go Leafs Go?

Rufus 3000 (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 4 July 2006 16:59 (nineteen years ago)

ugh.

i was finally warming up to a canucks team for the first time since the 1994 team that drove itself right into my then-11 y/o heart. they'd finally coalesced for the first time since the mike keenan FIASCO, and now it's all drifting. auld, jovanovski, bertuzzi(who is still a hero here), all gone. new coach! i don't even know who he is.

i don't know about dan cloutier. he's gonna be fighting it out with luongo, i guess. is he any good? i miss kirk maclean! greg adams! geoff courtnall! sergio momesso! oh man, jyrki lumme! he was great. thank god we still have trevor linden.

derrick (derrick), Wednesday, 5 July 2006 06:07 (nineteen years ago)

i didn't know that jose theodore was dating paris hilton, if only briefly.
i can't believe steve yzerman has been playing since I was in the 6th grade. what will i do without him?

keyth (keyth), Thursday, 6 July 2006 04:01 (nineteen years ago)

and now they've traded cloutier. s'ok; he always made me nervous. i'd be shocked if luongo stayed around for long, though.

derrick (derrick), Thursday, 6 July 2006 07:26 (nineteen years ago)

I wish they'd mic up the players more often

Classic.

Choking is now a medical condition?

GILLY'S BAGG'EAR VANCE OF COUPARI (Ex Leon), Friday, 7 July 2006 19:43 (nineteen years ago)

Cloutier to Kings makes me sad. Thanks for not solving the problem Dean Lombardi.

Jimmy Mod: NOIZE BOARD GRIL COMPARISON ANALYST (The Famous Jimmy Mod), Friday, 7 July 2006 20:26 (nineteen years ago)

Maybe you can explain this: what was wrong with the tandem of Garon and LaBarbera? I don't really follow the Kings, but a few consistency issues aside, it seemed that they were set for the next few seasons, no?

Also, the (unsubstantiated) rumor is that Pronger('s wife) demanded a trade because he knocked up some Edmonton journalist.

alex in montreal (alex in montreal), Monday, 10 July 2006 18:04 (nineteen years ago)

There's nothing wrong, really, with either of those guys (esp. La Barbera, who was sort of a surprising NYR castoff...). The Kings always seem to just start to turn it around and then go and do some stupid contract shit or blow it up and start over...

Jimmy Mod: NOIZE BOARD GRIL COMPARISON ANALYST (The Famous Jimmy Mod), Monday, 10 July 2006 18:40 (nineteen years ago)

Finally the Habs make some moves:

- Zednik to Washington for a 3rd round: I liked him, but his attitude sucks and he hasn't been the same since the Kyle McLaren hit (doesn't cut in anymore). He is really strong along the boards, but the puck kinda died with him more often than not. He'll put up some good numbers if he plays with Ovechkin, but he was done as a Hab.

- Mike Johnson from Phoenix for a 4th round: I hope he's not as soft as everyone says he is. Well, he shoots right, is a good passer (on a team full of wannabe scorers) and is solid two-way.

- Re-sign Aebischer. I like having two #1 goalies. Worked for Buffalo and Carolina (in the playoffs anyway).

- Signed Sergei Samsonov. I'm wary of small speedy forwards, as we seem to have a lot of them, but I remember hating playing against him when he was a Bruin and he was impressive during the Oilers Cup run. Him and Kovalev together should be beautiful (unless, of course, Mike Ribeiro centers that line).

alex in montreal (alex in montreal), Thursday, 13 July 2006 03:01 (nineteen years ago)

Sammy was impressive during the cup run? Other than that sweet out-of-the-penalty-box-and-in-to-the-empty-net goal in game 4 against San Jose he struggled to get any points.

Devils resigned their two key FA's Elias and Langenbrunner, I'm happy.

zaxxon25 (zaxxon25), Thursday, 13 July 2006 18:36 (nineteen years ago)

I don't know, it might be smokes and mirrors, but things seem to happen when he was on the ice. Also, I'd like to think that having Kovalev on the same line might help him finish more often. Maybe I'm being overly optimistic.

I really don't know how the Devils will keep the team intact given that they have very little cap room left and still have Gionta, Gomez and Martin left to sign as restricted free agents.

alex in montreal (alex in montreal), Friday, 14 July 2006 02:32 (nineteen years ago)

Scott Gomez is the most overrated player in the league.

Jimmy Mod: NOIZE BOARD GRIL COMPARISON ANALYST (The Famous Jimmy Mod), Friday, 14 July 2006 02:37 (nineteen years ago)

since when is aebischer a number one?

what the fuck?

mookieproof (mookieproof), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 19:35 (nineteen years ago)

Pierre McGuire kinda called it in his June 8th TSN column:

First off, I must say that I'm happy for both Smith and Nolan. The bottom line is they deserve to be in responsible positions in the National Hockey League.

But when you look at this, no owner should be hiring a new coach before he hires his general manager.

It creates a lot of potential problems down the road.

If, hypothetically speaking, Nolan doesn't like the player procurement made by Smith, he could easily go to talk to Wang about it rather than the GM.

That would simply be dysfunctional and unacceptable.

There has got to be a chain of command in every NHL franchise, and it looks like there is no chain of command in Long Island.

I see that Pat Lafontaine also resigned after the press conference.

So let's divvy up the likely blame between Ted Nolan, Charles Wang and Mike Milbury... maybe the blackballing of Nolan was justified after all.

alex in montreal (alex in montreal), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 14:30 (nineteen years ago)

No, probably Wang.

Dunno rlly. 2.5M... Boston maybe?

Jimmy Mod: THE HANDLESS ORGANIST (The Famous Jimmy Mod), Wednesday, 9 August 2006 14:19 (nineteen years ago)

2.9, I think. Boston is already in trouble with their cap with many players to sign (tho the thought of a second line of Murray-Savard-Dumont doesn't please me one bit as a Habs fan).

alex in montreal (alex in montreal), Wednesday, 9 August 2006 14:24 (nineteen years ago)

So it's starting soon...

WTF with LaBarbera put on waivers? I know the Kings have Cloutier-Garon, but the guy just came off a not-bad rookie season (.900, 2.89 GAA) and he's 26. Is he simply a victim of the numbers game?

Ribeiro for Niinimaa is great, just because Ribeiro could've singlehandedly sunk Kovalev and Samsonov. Time to give a guy like Plekanec a chance to shine.

The Western Conference looks fuckin' strong this year; don't know if any team from the East can match up.

I went to see the Wings play the Blackhawks when they were in town last week. Kind of a crap game (tho the Wings won) but I was struck by just how lame Chicago fans are these days. I had heard tales of the old Stadium and how loud it was, but these people were pathetic. They could barely cheer against Detroit, let alone for Chicago.

Decent seats were $15 though, I guess that's the upside of no-one caring.

daniel striped tiger (OutDatWay), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 15:45 (nineteen years ago)

I'm getting tickets for the Sabres / Predators game on the 21st of December. When I go back to the motherland (Buffalo) for Thanksgiving, you better believe I'm bringing all my old blue and yellow (orignal, thankyouverymuch) Sabres gear back. My goal is to get on television, wearing a blue and yellow tuque and an old Sabres hoodie.

molly d (mollyd), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 17:50 (nineteen years ago)

"Decent seats were $15 though, I guess that's the upside of no-one caring."

I recently went to see the Leafs play in Toronto, and paid literally more than 12 times that. That's the downside of everyone caring a little too much. They Senators killed them that night too.

They haven't lost much since that though, even with a couple of key injuries. Paul Maurice is already a leading contender for coach of the year.

sooooo, how are your teams doin'? lookin' good?
-- alex in montreal (hip_to_hat...), August 22nd, 2006.

Yes indeed! Took it to the Habs Saturday night. Currently sitting in 3rd place in the East (11-5-3) when a lot of people didn't think they'd even contend for a playoff spot. It's early, there are a lot of games left to play, and history has taught me to be guarded in my optimism, but things are looking up for the first time in a while in T.O.

DO YOU BELIEVE? (Julien Sandiford), Monday, 13 November 2006 07:15 (nineteen years ago)

I am so pleased with the Sabres. They gave Carolina a much needed whoopin'. It is still very early, but they've won 10 in a row. Again.

molly d (mollyd), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 02:57 (nineteen years ago)

Ugh! I missed the game last night, but I'm happy to see Afinogenov is back in the mix! I don't know they rhyme or reason for busting out the old jersey (other than they're insanely cool). I have flashbacks to my snowy childhood when they do, though.

All the teams aren't doing that, are they? Well, I don't think the Leafs' jersey has changed that drastically over the years(and good for them!). But, there have been so many new teams or team changes (i.e Hartford Whalers) that am I correct in saying that the retro shirt is an oddity?

Leave it to the girl to talk about what they're wearing.

ok, so i take "luongo whatever.' back, in a big way. dude is saving vancouver, and is the first goalie since kirk maclean that i actually TRUST.

that said, the last two games i've watched (vs. buffalo and vs. columbus) have ended in shootouts which we've lost. i hate shootouts. i blame the 1998 olympics for that, along with most of canada. i mean, ray bourque?

Bill Magill (Bill Magill), Tuesday, 6 February 2007 22:02 (eighteen years ago)

I watched FLA/NJD on Center Ice! Well, portions of it as the Devils were losing.

Anyone notice that Versus plays up the physical aspect of the game much more than any previous US national broadcast of the past 5-10 years? The announcers actually speak positively of it and hits/fights are a normal part of the between-periods highlights.

I notice this seems to be spilling over to some of the regional broadcasts as well.

zaxxon25 (zaxxon25), Tuesday, 6 February 2007 22:08 (eighteen years ago)

The announcers actually speak positively of it and hits/fights are a normal part of the between-periods highlights.

SEE ALSO: Don Cherry. I love his drunken diatribes about how hockey has become a pansy sport due to the lack of fighting. He's probably smiling down on Nashville, though, as they've gotten in some total bruisers lately.

molly mummenschanz (mollyd), Tuesday, 6 February 2007 22:11 (eighteen years ago)

That's weird, I had kind of thought they were still cutting away from fights. Maybe that was NBC? "New" NHL makes me want to puke sometimes. Did anyone see the highlights of dudes going after Crosby last night? I'm no Pens fan but that kind of shit would never have stood when there were serious enforcers in the league.

daniel striped tiger (OutDatWay), Tuesday, 6 February 2007 22:19 (eighteen years ago)

Crosby does embellish in order to draw penalties, but people are taking some liberties. That kid is the future of the game, and should be treated with the appropriate level of respect. I'm not saying guys shouldn't hit, or get physical with him, but enough with the cheap shots.

In an unrelated note, the Maple Leafs have now won 5 in a row since the All-Star break. Raycroft is playing his best hockey since his rookie year, and last night's win should have them back in a playoff spot. That coupled with the Raptors' recent resurgence means that all is well at the Air Canada Centre.

Paul Maurice is coach-of-the-year.

I want to get the nice seats for a Red Wings game, but they're so expensive. We'll have to settle non-existent leg room and nosebleed seats.

good present, yes. well, if i were your bf, anyway.

messier: well, slats hasn't really lit the world on fire in his rangers stint, so it probably wouldn't hurt. on the other hand, i'm not sure messier's management style of "play better or i'll kill you" is built for the nü-nhl

mookieproof, Friday, 23 February 2007 05:46 (eighteen years ago)

The whole thing was a mess. I missed the very first part of the fight, but Peters came roaring in, in a "don't fuck with my goalie!" mentality.

I think it's good that Miller came in after both goalies got game misconducts, as Ottawa gave the Sabres a run for the money. The whole thing was fairly shambolic, but I was happy to see the new guys brought up from the Amerks, scoring some goals, including the game winner.

molly mummenschanz, Friday, 23 February 2007 06:16 (eighteen years ago)

Wings are here in Chicago tonight, fresh off some trade deadline moves that swapped players between teams. I wish LaPointe would go back to Detroit, he is not utilized nor appreciated here. Detroit was also in the hunt for Bill Guerin but didn't get him. They're also rumored to be interested in Todd Bertuzzi, the fucking hack.

If Detroit wins tonight they tie the Preds (who are idle) for the division lead.

God damn Blackhawks fans are pathetic. Tonight, "Let's-Go Red-Wings" was clearly audible above all other noise on many occasions. Hasek held them scoreless until the last minute of play. I think Chicago might do well to have some of the spandex-clad ladies that come out to scrape up the snow during TV time outs join the team, then someone might actually cheer for them.

dan m, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 04:37 (eighteen years ago)

They say the die-hard, "real" fans hate the owners and that's why they don't go to games, and also why games like this are half sold-out to transplants from Michigan. I think it's a shame for an original six team with as much history as the Blackhawks. I'll root for them against anyone but Detroit.

Waht? They didn't win the President's trophy, so they have a better chance (superstitiously, of course)! As much as Boo-tuzi is a sucky hack I'm a little worried about him being injured... but at least Zetterberg should be healthy.

dan m, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 18:21 (eighteen years ago)

Dan, I think you're great, but as a native Buffalonian, I have to say I hate the Wings just on the Hasek premise.

Also, the Nashville / Detroit rivalry is intense, so it's a no-win situation for me.

molly mummenschanz, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 18:23 (eighteen years ago)

saw an interesting list on sunday--the standings if there were no overtime or shootout, and regulation ties were one point like they used to be. the reasoning was that some teams are good at four-on-fours and shootouts and some aren't, but since neither of these occur in playoff hockey maybe the regular standings aren't as good a predictor of who will succeed in the playoffs...

if you take away ot wins, the sabres fall to like 6th in the east. ottawa and san jose look significantly better.

mookieproof, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 18:28 (eighteen years ago)

That's OK, I'm not a big fan of the ol' bag of bones either. Ozzie is so much more fun to cheer for.

I predict the Preds roll over in the playoffs, I don't think they're tough enough for the long haul. Also, while a somewhat pleasant fantasy, a Detroit/Barfalo Cup series would pretty much tear my family apart.

Mr Noodles, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 19:18 (eighteen years ago)

Dude, that's why I left. No, in all honesty, it's not *that* bad. Growing up there gives you character... and a beer gut. The Buffalo winters are not conducive to outdoor activities, other than shoveling. Summers are great though! The sometimes toxic smell off the lake is awesome!

molly mummenschanz, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 19:20 (eighteen years ago)

Buffalo summers remind me of the nightly Channel 4 newscast recapping all the buildings which burst into flames in Cheektowaga that day.

Mr Noodles, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 19:46 (eighteen years ago)

I'd like to see a Buffalo-Pittsburgh conference final, 'cause that'll just be great fuckin' hockey. Either of them vs Nashville in the finals will do.

I wish I could find a picture of the house along the 90 in Cheektowaga that has the gigantic "ULTIMATE BILLS [SABRES] FAN" showing to all the traffic (the team depends on the season). That pretty much sums up Buffalo.

The Toronto Maple Leafs need to fire their General Manager immediately, dump a lot of the overpriced veteran talent, get a real starting goalie, and stop pretending that everything is ok. It's not, and hasn't been for 40 years! They are not on the right track, and to hear Raycroft talking about how he's "happy" that he got 37 wins this year is absolutely sickening. His numbers were garbage, and he was never able to keep his team in games, let alone steal one, when it was needed. J.S. Giguere won 1 less game in 16 less starts. None of the players were nearly upset enough about not making the playoffs for the SECOND year in a row. Toronto hockey fans need to send this team a message. They are the only franchise in the league who are consistently rewarded for mediocrity, and Toronto hockey fans have come to accept it, even expect it. They need to feel it in the pocket book, the players and management, before there will be any real pressure to put together a team with a real chance at contending.

Tukka Rask for Andrew Raycroft will eventually turn out to be the worst trade of the decade.

I'm probably not even going to bother watching much of the playoffs, but I hope like hell that Ottawa doesn't go far. That would be heaping insult onto injury.

Nicole, Wednesday, 11 April 2007 18:37 (eighteen years ago)

Wha? Aside from one horrendous loss to Philly every time I've seen them this year they've seemed pretty good even if they came out the loser. And they had the second-best record in the league! As I (sort of) said earlier I don't feel too comfortable depending on Hasek down the stretch, but that's how it goes.

So excited they re-signed Datsyuk too. Now they need to work on getting Marty LaPointe back.

dan m, Wednesday, 11 April 2007 18:45 (eighteen years ago)

"j-rock - are you just realizing this now?! My old man raised me to loath the leafs for that reason almost THIRTY YEARS AGO!"

Of course I've known this for a long time, but denial is a crucial part of being a hockey fan in Toronto. molly mummenschanz, Thursday, 12 April 2007 02:35 (eighteen years ago)

this is fucking hockey tonight. the only game i haven't seen any of is that wild/ducks game but everyone has fire in their belly, huh? i even felt good about some of the pens play... you can tell the kids were pretty freaked out, and for once ottawa brought a-game to the playoffs (as an ottawa resident 1998-2006 i had come to expect less than nothing).

i wish i had more channels than cbc because i could watch the hell out of some american teams right now though.

Will M., Thursday, 12 April 2007 03:37 (eighteen years ago)

molly mummenschanz, Thursday, 12 April 2007 03:56 (eighteen years ago)

usually when the game's a blowout, you expect the losing team to be delivering the cheap shots--unless it's ottawa

mookieproof, Thursday, 12 April 2007 04:00 (eighteen years ago)

wow, almost missed the last bus watching the canucks game at school - they won it at the end of the 4th overtime. 6th longest game ever. luongo had 75 saves or something. excellent!

derrrick, Thursday, 12 April 2007 08:33 (eighteen years ago)

i watched the first two overtimes--2am eastern--and went to bed. canucks are lucky; dallas was pretty thoroughly outplaying them in the parts i saw.

marty turco's now 1-7 in playoff ot.

mookieproof, Thursday, 12 April 2007 13:44 (eighteen years ago)

so the division winners getting the top three seeds is kind of bullshit. it's not so much that the division winners shouldn't be rewarded, but that the #6 seed is being rewarded too, by playing a worse team.

#6 rangers (94 pts) get #3 atlanta (97 pts), while
#4 ottawa (105 pts) and #5 pittsburgh (105 pts) get each other

same thing out west, but the point differences are less pronounced. at least ottawa got home ice, but pittsburgh would have been better off dropping a bunch of games to get the #6 seed.

mookieproof, Friday, 13 April 2007 00:58 (eighteen years ago)

Brendan Witt gets my vote for Worst Hair in Hockey.

molly mummenschanz, Friday, 13 April 2007 02:41 (eighteen years ago)

yep- it gave me faith in the canucks. they were outplayed through a few sections - the 3rd period and the first couple of overtimes esp. i recall. that they can still win a game when they're not the better team is important. they didn't collapse!

the best thing is that, judging from this game, the stars can't contain the sedins. the only time that the canucks looked really dangerous in overtime was when the sedins-pyatt line was out - a friend and i had them pegged in the 1st overtime to score the game winner. (we had the nagy-modano line picked for the stars.)

Was surprised as how potent the Lightning's top line is - they can blow through NJ's neutral zone defense seemingly at will. Haven't seen too much of that this year. Tortarella was double-shifting them last night as much as he could since none of their other lines could generate any pressure. Luckily Tampa's goaltending is subpar otherwise this might be a series. Hopefully they'll just get tired ...

zaxxon25, Friday, 13 April 2007 17:56 (eighteen years ago)

That Radulov goal was beautiful, with props especially to Fiddler for the hustle. Too bad the former had to go on and do something incredibly stupid like blatantly boarding Bernier.

Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 00:32 (eighteen years ago)

The Versus announcers are completely asinine. It's like, "dudes, have you ever even watched a hockey game?"

molly mummenschanz, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 03:14 (eighteen years ago)

Almost all hockey announcers and analysts suck IMO, Bri@n Engbl0m being first and foremost among them.

dan m, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 04:05 (eighteen years ago)

OK WTF I just saw an ad for the new Dimmu Borgir album on Vs. during the Wings/Flames game??

It's a good game thus far. Total playoff goals for both teams and everything looks pretty fast and tight. Plus, Vs. is rebroadcasting CBC's feed, so the commentary is good. Go Wings!

dan m, Wednesday, 18 April 2007 04:11 (eighteen years ago)

jmod there's an FSN2 (which had the devils-lightnings game the other night)--in brooklyn, at least, they put it on channel 51 superseding the tv guide channel

mookieproof, Wednesday, 18 April 2007 05:37 (eighteen years ago)

mookieproof, Wednesday, 18 April 2007 05:38 (eighteen years ago)

also, poor the penguins. tonight (for the first time) they actually deserved to win, but didn't.

mookieproof, Wednesday, 18 April 2007 05:38 (eighteen years ago)

Don't worry. The kids are alright. Malkin's got to find the back of the net soon, and Crosby's already demonstrated that he can handle the extra attention. Spectacular collapses are Ottawa's specialty. Pens in 7.

Rangers sweep! When was the last time anyone said that? I had them down to win, but I still didn't see that coming.

j-rock, Thursday, 19 April 2007 08:43 (eighteen years ago)

Neither did Lil' Jon.

dan m, Thursday, 19 April 2007 18:40 (eighteen years ago)

Lil'Jon is collecting his tears in his pimp cups.

I have tickets for tomorrow's Preds vs. Sharks game, while my sister has tickets to the Buffalo game. She's going to keep me abreast of scores via texting. yay, technology!

I hope I don't see the Preds get eliminated ;_; Also, I will teach Nashville fans how to boo the opposing goalie.

molly mummenschanz, Thursday, 19 April 2007 20:08 (eighteen years ago)

nobody wins their first playoff! it'll be ok, lil jon. hossa, kovalchuk and lehtonen aren't DECLINING in skill, surely. aged 28, 24, and 23 respectively... they've still got their best years ahead, I reckon, and some wily trades should boost that team to a very serious contender in future years.

YES TEACH NASHVILLE TO WIN PLZ. I don't want them to go out so soon! My playoff tree is pretty reliant on them! But then again it's also reliant on Buffalo and I wouldn't mind seeing them to go out to a lot of teams.

Will M., Thursday, 19 April 2007 20:16 (eighteen years ago)

And as much as I like the talent of that Penguins team, I want to get in a fight with most of them considering how much they run the fking goalie.

Will M., Thursday, 19 April 2007 20:21 (eighteen years ago)

It was funny to see DiPietro smash his stick last night when Pominville scored goal #4. Take that, Christy Brinkley! (she was interviewed in her Islanders jersey in game #3) Also, Versus, you still suck. I want my Buffalo announcers. Rick Jeanneret is the greatest man / announcer alive.

molly mummenschanz, Thursday, 19 April 2007 20:23 (eighteen years ago)

I only get two channels, and am in Canada, so obv. I've never seen Versus. Is it really that bad? Like, can you give an example? I'm used to the CBC guys who I don't even love really.

Will M., Thursday, 19 April 2007 20:37 (eighteen years ago)

First and foremost: TALKING OVER THE PLAYS. Interviewing folks of no importance (SEE ALSO: Christy Brinkely) while a really great play may be going on.

Also, crappy commentary between periods. They were kissing the Islanders ass (nb I am a native Buffalonian, downtrodden like the best of 'em) up until last night after the 4th Buffalo goal. I can understand that they're trying to make it seem more exciting to those who may not watch hockey year round. Fine, if they're going to do that, let me have my Sabres announcers on another channel. I even get the hockey package on cable so I can see every game. Gah. Lame.

molly mummenschanz, Thursday, 19 April 2007 20:47 (eighteen years ago)

First and foremost: TALKING OVER THE PLAYS.

this is some serious bushleague shit they still do. i remember back when they were first getting going they were planting ex survivor cast members in the stands and would CUT TO THEM WHILE PLAY WAS GOING ON AND HOLD THE SHOT

vs. fills me w/ woe. I mean can you SRSLY not just hire the ppls who shot for ESPN?>! they can't have all moved to footballs.

Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved, Thursday, 19 April 2007 21:02 (eighteen years ago)

I've noticed the cbc guys seems to be getting sloppier and sloppier over the last few years (old age maybe?) - don't pay too close attention but overall I'd imagine they'd be 1000000000000x better than any assclown a US network would want to throw out there!

The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Thursday, 19 April 2007 21:04 (eighteen years ago)

I think part of it is that the game is getting faster and faster, as far as the CBC guys. I watched some bits with them on youtube the other day, and I noticed two things... one, people moved slower, two, their commentary flowed perfectly with the game. I think the NHL is a phenomenally hard game to call nowadays for that reason. You can see two giveaways, a penalty and a goal all in about 3 seconds these days, and you can't catch ALL of those w/ good commentary.

Also they're from the era of old hitty Toronto, iirc, and appreciate a cheap hit here and there which I can't 100% get behind (even though I'm a pretty big Wendel Clark fan, they take it further than me... let's not even talk about teh Cherry)

Will M., Thursday, 19 April 2007 21:09 (eighteen years ago)

OMG and waht is with the TERRIBLE camera angles BEHIND the goal? SO TERRIBLE.

How are your local channels? Even the dudes here on FSN in Nashville (Terry Crisp and Pete W3b3r) are pretty great. But now the playoff big channel assclowns have taken over and it's all gone to seed.

molly mummenschanz, Thursday, 19 April 2007 21:10 (eighteen years ago)

too many tight shots, too--i recall seeing shootouts this year with the camera tight on the shooter the whole way in, which is useless.

mookieproof, Thursday, 19 April 2007 21:29 (eighteen years ago)

That garbage looks good in the 30-second "OMG GET HYPED IT'S HOCKEY" commercials they make, but not for the actual broadcast. Blech.

Will M., Thursday, 19 April 2007 21:32 (eighteen years ago)

Also, I will teach Nashville fans how to boo the opposing goalie.

<i>And as much as I like the talent of that Penguins team, I want to get in a fight with most of them considering how much they run the fking goalie.</i>

really? i remember colby armstrong running emery pretty blatantly once (and the sens scored on the ensuing pp), but that's about it.

i almost wish that game weren't on tonight so i wouldn't have to see them get eliminated :/

ALMOST. Don't forget about Bryan McCabe who got 5 years at $29 million, with a no-trade clause. Even taking Toronto's decades of ineptitude into account, has there ever been a more useless GM?

Go anybody-but-Ottawa Go!

dan m, Monday, 23 April 2007 15:27 (eighteen years ago)

too too too

Just to rant a little more, I love the CBC announcers for their knowledgable commentary on the game, but god damn are they some homers for any Canadian team. It makes sense, but it was a little much at times last night.

dan m, Monday, 23 April 2007 15:29 (eighteen years ago)

I have a sneaking suspicion that Barry Trotz won't be around next season.

Also, I thought I saw Scotty Bowman leaving the Pred's Arena (at a fancy exit) on Friday night. I was probably just drunk.

molly mummenschanz, Monday, 23 April 2007 15:31 (eighteen years ago)

I've trained my family over the years to

a) Root for the Kings of all the California teams.

b) Since the Kings are never in the playoffs, root for all Canadian teams first.

c) If all Canadian teams are eliminated, consult JtM to discover new loyalties.

Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved, Monday, 23 April 2007 15:34 (eighteen years ago)

The fact that teh Sabres gave up two goals in the 3rd made me a bit concerned. They won (the series too), but come on, boys! Don't fuck it up. I know you're from Buffalo and all, but let's try something different for a change, shall we?

molly mummenschanz, Monday, 23 April 2007 15:36 (eighteen years ago)

I pull for buffalo super hardcore

Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved, Monday, 23 April 2007 15:50 (eighteen years ago)

other things being equal, in a given series i root for the northernmost team. i figure that it probably means more to their fans.

(this excludes nyc-area teams and detroit; i always root against them)

mookieproof, Monday, 23 April 2007 18:56 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, it doesn't mean anything to Detroit fans.

That sounds like a good system, though. After #1 Detroit and #2 Barfalo, it's pretty much what I go by.

Not offended or trying to be offensive or whatever, but what do you think is the general cause for people hating Detroit, if they happen to feel that way? Wins? Hype? Dudes like Chelios?

dan m, Monday, 23 April 2007 19:08 (eighteen years ago)

I don't like detroit because

a) they always seemed like a bankroll team before the cap. I hate when people buy a team instead of building one. but this excuse is gone now
b) probert was not as awesome as people say. i would take wendel over him any day.
c) the detroit fans who lived near me were idiots. moreso than the leafs fans.
d) i'm not a big fan of chelios, yeah. as a canadian i don't like good players from the USA simply because they threaten our north american dominance of the sport. and without that, we'd have no identity! lacrosse, maybe?
e) red and white... yawn
f) i used to live on lake huron, and while we did not have a team, i don't want some OTHER great lake winning
g) they robbed teams I loved many times over the past 20 years. see also the jers. hate the jers.
h) did they ever play neutral zone trap? fuck that shit, i'd rather watch lawn bowling.

Will M., Monday, 23 April 2007 19:15 (eighteen years ago)

I don't know that I've seen them play the trap much if ever, and they've been sonned by it numerous times in the past (95 finals comes painfully to mind).

dan m, Monday, 23 April 2007 19:20 (eighteen years ago)

i) hasek.

molly mummenschanz, Monday, 23 April 2007 19:20 (eighteen years ago)

Uh oh, this is going to turn into a list thread isn't it? :)

dan m, Monday, 23 April 2007 19:21 (eighteen years ago)

To be fair, I loved Coffey and Yzerman a lot. I never "hated" the Wings so much as I resented them for winning things and not being a Canuck team. Same with Jersey, and for a while with Buffalo (still kind of with Barfalo), and the Habs a bit when I was like 7.

xpost oh yeah, and Hasek. I HATED Buffalo circa Hasek. Fucking... always beating my teams and shit :(

Will M., Monday, 23 April 2007 19:22 (eighteen years ago)

j) they always kicked the shit out of the Kings ;_;
k) Kris Draper

Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved, Monday, 23 April 2007 19:23 (eighteen years ago)

I agree with what Will says, mainly point C. Wings fans, outside of Detroit, are vicious. Dudes, let's just embrace the rust belt and get along.

molly mummenschanz, Monday, 23 April 2007 19:24 (eighteen years ago)

yes, hasek. and chelios is a grade A tool. i do have respect for the wings, but i have my own great-lakes area team with a 40-year losing streak and all their impressive stats and "hockeytown" claims make me a little hot under the collar.

plus - why won't anyone think of the octopuses? (octopi?)

Rob Bolton, Monday, 23 April 2007 19:24 (eighteen years ago)

Rob are you a Hawks fan? Or is that the Leafs...

dan m, Monday, 23 April 2007 19:28 (eighteen years ago)

Ouch, being a Chicago fan must SUCK. I used to have a Hackett rookie card that my friend was CONVINCED was going to be worth insane amounts of money. That didn't pan out. I had a Lindros rookie card at some point, though. Think I lost it.

xpost i didn't evne think of the Leafs.

Will M., Monday, 23 April 2007 19:29 (eighteen years ago)

i'm mainly against detroit because they've been too successful recently. and i don't like chelios since he tomahawked larry murphy in the '92 finals. nor hasek.

loved stevie y, have nothing against lidstrom, actually rather enjoy the way they play. (apart from kiprusoff, they really just took apart the flames.) but i don't root for them.

mookieproof, Monday, 23 April 2007 19:30 (eighteen years ago)

i'm in toronto... although i assume hawks fans have their own issues as well!

Rob Bolton, Monday, 23 April 2007 19:34 (eighteen years ago)

this is probably not fair what with datsyuk and zetterberg and whomever, but when i think of the wings i think "crafty veterans". i mean, there's nothing wrong with robert lang/matthieu schneider/etc., they're good players, but i'm not excited for them to win.

mookieproof, Monday, 23 April 2007 19:35 (eighteen years ago)

Oh wow, thinking of Lang as a veteran is v. strange to me for some reason.

Yep, I'm in Chicago now and I feel super bad seeing the team on such a skid. They got the #1 pick in the draft for next year, though! They could really use another forward to compliment Havlat.

dan m, Monday, 23 April 2007 19:41 (eighteen years ago)

b) probert was not as awesome as people say. i would take wendel over him any day.

Those are fighting words. People can say what they like about modern day Wings (haven't been excited over them this year), but NO ONE insults Probie.

Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved, Friday, 27 April 2007 05:12 (eighteen years ago)

OK, now that I have calmed down a little... Yes, the Wings outshot SJ, but they're not adapting their game to that of the Sharks. This is something that has gotten under my skin for years in the playoffs -- they come up against a chippy, defensive-minded team, and keep bashing their collective heads against the wall trying to play the classic Detroit slick passing, offensive game. SJ plays some weak-ass shit, and it just mystifies me why Babcock & Co. can't solve it.

They need to win Saturday's game in a big way or I'm very afraid their run is all but over.

dan m, Friday, 27 April 2007 16:33 (eighteen years ago)

Where the hell is Don Cherry on NBC?

Versus is sucking beyond belief.

molly mummenschanz, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 18:07 (eighteen years ago)

I'm strangely not too pissed about last night's loss by the Wings. The game was good, both teams played hard, the Sharks got the breaks they needed in the end.

I haven't seen Donnie boy either, and yes, Versus totally blows. Although, they do rebroadcast a lot of Canadian stuff, at least that's what I'm assuming TSN is.

dan m, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 18:12 (eighteen years ago)

I feel the same way about los Sabres losing in the 2nd OT to the Rangers. They didn't look so hot for most of the game, and the game winning goal was just unlucky. However, I am excited about tonight, as my parents brought down some Sahlen's hot dogs and Federal Market pierogis (Buffalo's finest cuisine), so hopefully good things will happen tonight when I cook them up.

mookieproof, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 19:31 (eighteen years ago)

Wow, that seemed so wrong. Then I started poking around... just found a list of the winning captains from the late 70s to now, and none are European, and I find it less and less likely that there'd be one before that...!

Will M., Tuesday, 1 May 2007 19:38 (eighteen years ago)

by "so wrong" i mean "unbelievable"

anyway, this makes alfie's chances this year that much more prolific (and unlikely, statistically!) but there's a first for everything. I can't believe I am cheering for this team again... but all the OTHER teams I like got eliminated already! Curse you, Nashville, NYI, Pittsburgh, Atlanta, Dallas (kinda), Calgary (kinda), and Minnesota! CURSE YOU!

Will M., Tuesday, 1 May 2007 19:44 (eighteen years ago)

JESUS H.

THIS IS WHAT IT'S LIKE TO BE A SABRES FAN.

Briere totally had a goal with 13 seconds left. But, in true Buffalo fashion, it went under review and was deemed NO GOAL.

The last 7 minutes the Sabres played was great, however they should have played like that the entire fucking game.

molly mummenschanz, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 01:51 (eighteen years ago)

yeah, that very likely was a goal, but the right call, i guess, since you couldn't see for sure. too bad. sabres were awful flat for the first 50 minutes, though.

mookieproof, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 02:19 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, they played scared for the first 2 1/2 periods, which is nothing to be proud of. They're being too careful.

From my living room, these Buffalonian eyes saw a goal in the replay. Lundquist's leg wasn't there in time, due to the fact he had to rush to get back in net.

So it goes.

molly mummenschanz, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 02:25 (eighteen years ago)

Perhaps this will make me sound like a whinging fan, but it seems to me that these bullshit calls, that are deemed "inconclusive" by the refs, or the big ups in TO that are part of the problem why the NHL is in such dire straights right now. Who, other than the devout few, wants to see a game that's decided by refs, instead of actual goals? Get pucks that have sensors in them. Find a way to get better camera angles.

This aggression will not stand, man.

dan m, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 13:47 (eighteen years ago)

daerest joe beninati:

1. it is not necessary to inform us every five minutes that "the chant is let's go rangers"
2. when the goalie covers the puck, he is not "melting" it; if anything, he is "freezing" it
3. stop inventing verbs describing how players move the puck
4. of all the shitty hockey play-by-play men in the usa, why did versus pick you? is it simply that the caps aren't in the playoffs and you're available? (thank god they didn't pick up craig laughlin too.) i'd rather listen to al rosen and joe micheletti--and i loathe the rangers.
5. on the bright side, at least you're not inexplicably at ice level like that smug fucker pierre mcguire on nbc

mookieproof, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 15:32 (eighteen years ago)

HAHA ARE YOU SERIOUS? Melting the puck?!

Will M., Wednesday, 2 May 2007 15:39 (eighteen years ago)

Oh christ, McGuire... even Gary Thorne would be preferable to that clown.

TSN is Canadian, right? Do they have Ron Mclean now? I thought I heard his voice the other night.

dan m, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 19:06 (eighteen years ago)

TSN doesn't have Ron MacLean, but yes they are Canadian.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NHL_on_TSN shows the commentors they have. Err, I guess they call them sportscasters.

Will M., Wednesday, 2 May 2007 19:31 (eighteen years ago)

lol "sportscasters". Although CBC's Bob Cole and Harry Neale are listed as "Colour Commentators". Go figure. Yeah, McGuire is annoying, but dude really knows his hockey. If only he could dial it down a bit.

I'm bummed about the Sabres loss, since I've focused my allegiance on them - this in itself is hard for me being a Torontonian...

tsn is the espn of canada, eh?

i'm glad that we us-ians are getting the cbc/tsn feeds of the late games, but damn it's pretty pathetic that versus can't even do it itself--especially when the late game features two "american" teams like tonight.

Whew. I couldn't bring myself to watch the Wings/Sharks overtime last night, so logging on this morning to find out that Schneider, of all people, scored the winning goal was quite sweet. It was only a couple of nights ago that Clement, Engblom, and that other jerk were talking about how much SJ had neutralized him as a threat from the point. Keep talking, you assholes.

dan m, Thursday, 3 May 2007 13:17 (eighteen years ago)

sabres better sack up tonight! lundquist is pretty good, but come on--buffalo should be killing the rangers.

Legendary enforcer Tiger Williams was also up to his old tricks, taunting the referees and getting into a playful scrap with Cpl. Mike Loder of the 2nd Newfoundland Regiment.

THIS IS THE BEST SPORTS-RELATED-HUMAN-INTEREST JOURNALISM SENTENCE I HAVE EVER READ.

Excellent win for the Wings today, that was the kind of game I have been waiting for. I hope they can keep the pressure on and end this in 6, because the Ducks are getting a good rest.

dan m, Saturday, 5 May 2007 20:43 (eighteen years ago)

mookieproof, Saturday, 5 May 2007 21:06 (eighteen years ago)

YES! IT WAS AWESOME!

I was sitting on my couch, waiting to be bummed, as per usual, AND CHRIS DRURY SCORED with 7 SECONDS LEFT in the third period. Way to up Briere's 13 second remaining ante, my boy. AND THEN MAXIM AFINOGANOV! I believe they call that a "nutmeg" in soccer. That went right through his legs, didn't it? So fuckin' great. He totally redeemed himself (see also: getting benched, playing sub par as of late, etc.)

molly mummenschanz, Sunday, 6 May 2007 00:00 (eighteen years ago)

Drury's clutch factor is sick.

the blooz put their money in grant fhur and jim carrey they deserve everything they get for running jamie storr in the playoffs

Was that when Courtnall did it? That was totally cheap but totally effective. The Blues were pretty much wiped out for a decade by the Stevens tampering case + Mike Kennan. They'll be a beast of a team in a couple years though.

bnw, Sunday, 6 May 2007 06:21 (eighteen years ago)

the end for the avalanche came when they traded drury. not that that upsets me much. patrick roy retiring might also have had something to do with their fall. hasek gave up a weak goal then shut it down. amazing how these teams get so agitated by the wings considering they're a bunch of euros.

keythkeyth, Sunday, 6 May 2007 08:08 (eighteen years ago)

Aside from Holmstrom, it's non-euro guys like Maltby, Draper, and Chelios that really agitate the other teams. Holmstrom's goal was so perfect.

dan m, Sunday, 6 May 2007 08:42 (eighteen years ago)

Sabres ftw! I had it on in the background while cleaning, and the score changed every time I came back in the room, it seemed.

dan m, Monday, 7 May 2007 04:12 (eighteen years ago)

damn...you...senators.

Buffalo, please take this trash out.

thank you.

j-rock, Monday, 7 May 2007 10:54 (eighteen years ago)

yesssssssssssssssssssss

I was shouting at the TV so loudly when Hasek basically passed the puck to Grier with an empty net... Lindstrom deserves the MVP for that save alone if they win the Cup.

dan m, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 15:48 (eighteen years ago)

Sabres vs. Sens starts Thursday. COME ON FEEL THE NOISE.

molly mummenschanz, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 15:53 (eighteen years ago)

is ray emery for realz?

mookieproof, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 16:06 (eighteen years ago)

Vs. showed some footage of last year's Buffalo/Ottawa series last night, includig Emery fighting two different guys.

dan m, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 16:08 (eighteen years ago)

Oh, this is one of Buffalo's biggest rivals, for instances like you mention, Dan. Earlier in the season, the shit hit the proverbial fan with the two teams. This is going to be a bruiser of a series.

molly mummenschanz, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 16:19 (eighteen years ago)

mookieproof, Thursday, 10 May 2007 23:10 (eighteen years ago)

dan m, Friday, 11 May 2007 00:23 (eighteen years ago)

THAT'S WHAT I LIKE TO HEAR, DAN!

Also, VERSUS I HATE YOU: "That was a juicy rebound!" WTF DOES THAT MEANS!??!

molly mummenschanz, Friday, 11 May 2007 00:28 (eighteen years ago)

uh oh!

mookieproof, Friday, 11 May 2007 03:03 (eighteen years ago)

juicy rebound is normal! well, in hockey. it means a big rebound, generally in the slot, that can easily be picked up for a scoring opportunity.

derrrick, Friday, 11 May 2007 03:14 (eighteen years ago)

eg, afinogenov scored on a juicy rebound left by ray emery

mookieproof, Friday, 11 May 2007 03:18 (eighteen years ago)

I have never once, in my 20+ years of watching hockey ever heard "juicy rebound." Mind you, this probably comes from listening to Sabres announcers who did not (thankfully) have that in their commentating lexicon.

molly mummenschanz, Friday, 11 May 2007 04:03 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, it sounds like more of a basketball thing.

dan m, Friday, 11 May 2007 05:55 (eighteen years ago)

Flukey goals and too many penalties tonight... still, a win is a win.

dan m, Saturday, 12 May 2007 07:47 (eighteen years ago)

i once saw the top 10 list of homoerotic comments from tom larscheid, long-time canucks colour comentator. "pavel bure... wow, it would be a real show to just see him playing with himself out there"

derrrick, Saturday, 12 May 2007 09:14 (eighteen years ago)

uh oh²

mookieproof, Sunday, 13 May 2007 04:06 (eighteen years ago)

btw where's nicole?

mookieproof, Sunday, 13 May 2007 04:06 (eighteen years ago)

Really sad for the Sabres, that tying goal was magical.

dan m, Sunday, 13 May 2007 05:00 (eighteen years ago)

last series i'd pegged sabres, senators, ducks, and sharks to make it through. i'm still counting the red wings out now too - the ducks are good; half the fun of the ducks/vancoyver series was watching how well they set up and shut the canucks down. it hurt to see, but when i could detach myself it was gorgeous. so, i'm pegging the ducks and senators to move on. then i don't know. i feel i should root for ottawa but i don't really feel it like i did for, say, edmonton in the finals last year.

derrrick, Sunday, 13 May 2007 19:46 (eighteen years ago)

Bless you, mookie, I searched and searched and couldn't find the thread.

Yeah, I hate to say it, but teh Sabres were BUFFALOWNED last night. What a shitty goal that was...

dan m, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 20:45 (eighteen years ago)

Also, the Ducks are good, but not that good. They were on their heels for a good portion of both games thus far. The late games are going to be a bastard though, I don't know why Detroit is in the west. I hope they start calling that ski-jump-nosed Pronger for his along the boards holding B.S.

dan m, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 20:47 (eighteen years ago)

BUFFALOWNED! i love it!

The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 20:50 (eighteen years ago)

OH GOD, THE SABRES.

They're falling apart at the seams, and I actually couldn't bear to watch all of it last night. The Sens are totally outplaying us, and the only reason the score wasn't higher was because Mr. Miller was fucking great. I'm glad there wasn't any last minute "come back with 5 seconds to tie it" bullshit, because for that minute where they're focused on scoring, well, they need to play like that for the entire game, ffs.

Oh, Buffalo.

molly mummenschanz, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 00:00 (eighteen years ago)

haha

Sundar, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 00:58 (eighteen years ago)

I hate the Ottawa Senators sooooo much.

j-rock, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 01:33 (eighteen years ago)

Wow, that was incredibly satisfying.

R. Niedermeyer got what he deserved but Pronger deserved some minutes in the box, too, for that cowardly hit on Holmstrom. I'm sure he'll take the two holes in his head for the two pucks he put in the back of the Ducks' net.

dan m, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 03:43 (eighteen years ago)

MAN OH MAN

There's a good chance I will be seeing game 5 of the Detroit/Anaheim series on Sunday.

"SO EXICTED YOU GUYS" DOES NOT DO JUSTICE TO DESCRIBE MY LEVEL OF EXCITATION. I have never been to Joe Louis before.

dan m, Thursday, 17 May 2007 19:04 (eighteen years ago)

Chris Pronger better be ready for the booing of a lifetime.

dan m, Thursday, 17 May 2007 19:04 (eighteen years ago)

What's so hateable about the Sens? They're fun to watch. Beats the hell out of Ana/Van/NJ/TB/trap/trap/boring/yawn/please/do/something/interesting. Then again I've been watching them since Yashin... hell, since Daigle... so there's a certain satisfaction fom seeing the shitty SHITTY home team grow into something that might even make it to the SC finals

Will M., Thursday, 17 May 2007 21:50 (eighteen years ago)

good thing i didn't drink every time s. niedermeyer turned the puck over tonight.

stevie y still looks like he's 25--he could pass for chelios' son!

mookieproof, Friday, 18 May 2007 03:47 (eighteen years ago)

Argh. I really thought the Wings'd get it done eventually with all that pressure in the third period.

Yzerman, Bowman, and someone else were shown sitting together... was that Mike Illitch?

dan m, Friday, 18 May 2007 04:16 (eighteen years ago)

"What's so hateable about the Sens?"

1) I'm from Toronto, and over the years a lot of stuff has been said about us by the Ottawa media, and players, that I haven't forgotten. There's nothing more petty than an entire city with an inferiority complex.

2) Their history of playing well during the regular season, only to disappear in the playoffs.

3) Empty seats during playoff games. Pathetic.

4) Daniel Alfredsson

5) I'm from Toronto.

j-rock, Friday, 18 May 2007 04:37 (eighteen years ago)

sens hate seconded. i don't have 5 reasons.

alex in montreal, Friday, 18 May 2007 10:01 (eighteen years ago)

1 -- ok, fair.

2 -- they were retarded in their playoff growth to be sure, but a) a lot of that can be pinned on martin, imo, and more on the fact that they're new to the game still relatively. you gotta lose some playoffs before you can win one.

3 -- it's been a few years since this was the case. and besides, that's not so much the fault of the sens as it is the city of ottawa. bunch of fucking assholes. but also, the stadium is so far away that the average joe can't get there easily (it's not even in ottawa-- it's in kanata, which is just about as far as you can get from ottawa without being in farm country-- AND you pass through some farm country to get there.) it's also a new franchise, relatively. Ottawa is still filled with a lot of Toronto and Montreal fans from before -- only now are fans growing up on the Sens getting to the age where they cna afford their own tickets. Franchise loyalty doesn't just happen overnight, especially in a town full of fans of two of hockey's most majestic legacies, the Leafs and the Habs. A lot of Av fans too (I am guessing they were Nordiques fans before). Not so many Phoenix fans though despite a once-strong Jets contingent IIRC (matbe that's where I lived before, though, which was about 3h west of Toronto on Lake Huron... we also had Wings fans there too, we were semi-close to Detroit, I suppose).

4 -- This makes NO sense to me from a fan of a team who has Sundin. I'm not saying they play EXACTLY alike but they are both skilled players who've gained some well-needed clutch and grit over the passing seasons. So what's this garbage all about :(

5 -- Remember when you guys hated the Habs instead?

Will M., Friday, 18 May 2007 14:37 (eighteen years ago)

Why I hate the Sens:

1) I'm from Buffalo.

The end.

molly mummenschanz, Friday, 18 May 2007 14:46 (eighteen years ago)

Seriously, there needs to be an NHL franchise in Val D'Or, Quebec. That way, there could be a franchise that hates the shit out of Ottawa in EVERY cardinal direction!

Maybe I'll do what I did for baseball and pick a team that has sucked for a long time to cheer for-- that way nobody can hate my team because they'll be busy going "lol that team."

I picked Cincinnati for baseball. Guess I'll go with the Ohio theme. Go Blue Jackets!

Will M., Friday, 18 May 2007 14:52 (eighteen years ago)

Will, I wholeheartedly endorse cheering for a team that never wins anything. It builds character.

Go Sabres!

molly mummenschanz, Friday, 18 May 2007 14:53 (eighteen years ago)

I actually don't mind the Senators, except I do support Buffalo in the current series. When the team was reborn when I was in 9th grade or so, I got this totally awesome embroiderd baseball cap with their new logo on it.

dan m, Friday, 18 May 2007 15:06 (eighteen years ago)

"Maybe I'll do what I did for baseball and pick a team that has sucked for a long time to cheer for-- that way nobody can hate my team because they'll be busy going "lol that team."

Be careful. A friend of mine did that with the Indiannapolis Colts about 15 years ago, and they just won the Superbowl.

I wholeheartedly endorse cheering for a team that never wins anything. It builds character.

If it's character you're looking for, then you should move to Toronto, and cheer for the Leafs. I'm sick of character, I want a Stanley Cup!

j-rock, Friday, 18 May 2007 15:49 (eighteen years ago)

i had a general distaste for the senators based on a (perceived) rep for unsavory stickwork and the hatred of my friend who's a leafs fan. the end of game one against my penguins didn't help, as they were solidly up and dishing out some questionable hits. also, i don't like bryan murray.

but since then i've grown to like them. there seems to have been less chippiness and they really have just dismantled the pens, devils and sabres in impressive fashion. (i'm not quite convinced by emery, but it doesn't even seem to matter, their team defense is so good--and not in a boring trapping way.) i'm still ostensibly rooting for buffalo, but i'll be rooting for ottawa over whoever wins the west (ie, detroit).

mookieproof, Friday, 18 May 2007 16:05 (eighteen years ago)

As a Devil fan, I hate Ottawa.

Bill Magill, Friday, 18 May 2007 16:20 (eighteen years ago)

j-rock, I totally hear you, but I could never betray my Sabres and become a Leafs fan (local rivalries, etc.).

El boyfriendo asked me one day, "So, you just hate every team that's playing the Sabres, right?" My answer was yes. I do like my adopted Predators, but when they were whooped by the Sabres earlier in the year, you can guess who was drunkenly cheering from the nosebleed section in Nashville.

molly mummenschanz, Friday, 18 May 2007 16:24 (eighteen years ago)

Ah, the Eastern Conference. So much hatred.

I despise Colorado and Dallas. San Jose's up there too.

dan m, Friday, 18 May 2007 16:24 (eighteen years ago)

haha i didn't know there were any devils fans

mookieproof, Friday, 18 May 2007 16:43 (eighteen years ago)

Another reason why I hate the Sens:

Emery

He's such a punk (see today's obvious trip against the Sabres, among other things)

molly mummenschanz, Saturday, 19 May 2007 19:48 (eighteen years ago)

truth be told: ottawa's defense was far superior to ours, even though i continue to loathe them with every fiber of my being.

time to continue the heavy drinking.

molly mummenschanz, Saturday, 19 May 2007 21:31 (eighteen years ago)

I was actually a little surprised that Ottawa won given how many penalties they drew.

Sundar, Saturday, 19 May 2007 21:43 (eighteen years ago)

And the icings! Woohdamn. They had a lot. It was a good game, even considering the outcome. And that save by Miller at the end of the game was amazing! It almost makes me want to toast the fellow with some Miller (The Champagne of Beers), but not that much. I have plenty to consume before I hit up that shit.

molly mummenschanz, Saturday, 19 May 2007 21:45 (eighteen years ago)

it was a good game! spezza's goal in the 2nd was beautiful, and the game winner was nice too. ottawa's good - they've got a decent shot in the final, no matter who comes out of the west. i've still got my bet on anaheim, although i'd prefer an ottawa/detroit series.

Wow. That'd be weird. Wouldn't a lot of people there already be Leafs fans?

dan m, Thursday, 24 May 2007 03:38 (eighteen years ago)

you'd be surprised.

The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Thursday, 24 May 2007 04:05 (eighteen years ago)

So, disgruntled ex-Leaf fans? Sabres? Habs?

dan m, Thursday, 24 May 2007 04:09 (eighteen years ago)

Some. And others that just think the Leafs plain stink.

I was raised here and my old man taught me to that "our" hockey team was a license to print money and the owners have zero interest in winning shit. ever. recent years the leafs have resembled more of a Euro all star team than a Canadian franchise and that hasn't helped matters much either!

There are alot of Habs fans here too for some reasons.

The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Thursday, 24 May 2007 16:12 (eighteen years ago)

If the Preds do move, I hope they will become The Kitchener Waterloo Predators, because, if a move is going to happen, the deserve a clunky name.

molly mummenschanz, Thursday, 24 May 2007 16:14 (eighteen years ago)

Since some games could be in the hammer they could just go with Ontario Predators. Perosonally I'd rather see them called The Upper Canada Preditors.

The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Thursday, 24 May 2007 16:18 (eighteen years ago)

The local news said this morning that they're not officially going to be moved... yet. I FEAR FOR NASHVILLE.

molly mummenschanz, Thursday, 24 May 2007 16:27 (eighteen years ago)

What is up with this massive layoff? They should already be at least 2 games into the finals. The NHL is run by idiots. All they've managed to do is kill any interest that anyone outside of Ottawa or Anaheim might have had in the outcome.

j-rock, Monday, 28 May 2007 01:01 (eighteen years ago)

A friendly, warm-spirited "Fuck you" to anyone who thinks the cup should go anywhere near Anaheim.

Sundar, Monday, 28 May 2007 01:08 (eighteen years ago)

GO DUCKS! I'd rather they threw it in a lake than have it end up in Ottawa.

j-rock, Monday, 28 May 2007 01:21 (eighteen years ago)

I think upthread I and others said something about rooting for the Canadian team in the end. This still stands for me although I must admit, I probably won't watch all of the games.

dan m, Monday, 28 May 2007 01:25 (eighteen years ago)

That's one. Only three more to go.

dan m, Tuesday, 29 May 2007 05:01 (eighteen years ago)

i was in ottawa for the last 5 days but came back today... just in time for the 3rd period, which was all ducks.

derrrick, Tuesday, 29 May 2007 06:05 (eighteen years ago)

wtf happened to ottawa? no forecheck, completely unable to carry the zone, haphazard defense, spezza looks like hell, etc etc. they're dishing out a few hits here and there, but that's about it.

there was a sequence in their series with buffalo when they were killing off a 5-on-3 and were skating hard at the point men--i'd never seen such aggressive defense. maybe they spent their nine days off at the beach.

mookieproof, Thursday, 31 May 2007 02:58 (eighteen years ago)

I can't overstate how happy I am with the results of the first two games of this series. All the Ducks need to do now is take one in Ottawa, and it's over. It's nice to see Spezza back to playing the way he used to. Let's face it, solid two-way hockey just wasn't his thing. Ottawa looks completely overmatched. The 9 day layoff is probably a factor, but whatever. Panic must be setting in in the capital right about now.

GO DUCKS!

j-rock, Thursday, 31 May 2007 04:55 (eighteen years ago)

I will blame you personally if Anaheim wins the series.

Sundar, Thursday, 31 May 2007 06:55 (eighteen years ago)

It's a deal! WHEN Anaheim wins the series, when.

j-rock, Thursday, 31 May 2007 07:06 (eighteen years ago)

Eh, Ducks won two at home. Now we win two at home. Then we have momentum, take 5 away, and 6 at home. Right? Right? Oh god we're fucked

Will M., Thursday, 31 May 2007 18:32 (eighteen years ago)

I'm just routing for the Ducks because the Senators have caused my heart TO BREAK IN TWO.

molly mummenschanz, Thursday, 31 May 2007 21:29 (eighteen years ago)

Routing for the Ducks? You rabble-rouser.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 31 May 2007 21:33 (eighteen years ago)

Haha that's hardly raising rabble, EVERYBODY'S cheering vs. the Sens. I would be if I hadn't lived in Ottawa for a while...

Will M., Thursday, 31 May 2007 22:19 (eighteen years ago)

Ok, I shouldn't say the Sens broke heart.

SABRES, WHY MUST U BRAEK HEARTS?

Hopefully, we'll still be able to keep Afinogenov and his beautiful skin (for realz, I saw him at the airport and he had the complexion of a newborn baby).

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 31 May 2007 22:37 (eighteen years ago)

No! I merely have admiration for his skin. I don't want to wear it, or anything. I don't want to make a "man suit" out of Maxim Afinogenov.

ANAHEIM, CALIF.–The Nashville Predators may be headed for Hamilton, at least temporarily.
Waterloo billionaire Jim Balsillie, who has a letter of agreement to buy the Predators that closes June 30, last night re-activated an exclusive lease arrangement with Hamilton city council in which he could use the facility temporarily or permanently as home to an NHL team.

The deal would give Balsillie and the Predators 100 per cent of revenues from Copps, including naming rights to the 22-year-old facility, and possibly the rights to run Hamilton Place and the downtown convention centre. Balsillie had a similar arrangement in place last year, but let it lapse in October.

"(Balsillie) has assured me that he wants to secure a team and he is interested in bringing it to Hamilton," mayor Fred Eisenberger told the Hamilton Spectator last night after Hamilton city council okayed the deal. "Certainly he has the resources to do it and we will leave it up to him to pull it together."

This, naturally, will inflame speculation about the future of the Predators, particularly after NHL commissioner Gary Bettman said on Monday that suggestions the team will be moving out of Tennessee are premature.

Balsillie used the company Golden Horseshoe Sports and Entertainment Inc. to negotiate the lease with Hamilton.

"It is simply a contingency plan in the unlikely event that the Predators arena lease terminates prior to its normal course expiration," said Richard Rodier, Balsillie's lawyer, in an e-mail last night.

Many believe Balsillie's ultimate goal is to move the Predators to the Kitchener-Waterloo area, although he has never confirmed that publicly. To do so, however, he would likely need a temporary home, and Copps Coliseum, is the largest NHL-type facility in the region.

To use Copps even temporarily, however, Balsillie might still have to pay indemnification fees to the Maple Leafs, who have exclusive territorial rights to a 50-mile area outside of Toronto, and possibly the Buffalo Sabres as well. The Kitchener-Waterloo area, however, falls outside of those exclusive zones. Balsillie reached an agreement last week to buy the Predators for $220 million (U.S.) from Craig Leipold.

Bettman met with Balsillie last week and told reporters the Research in Motion czar told him he doesn't have specific plans to move the team to southern Ontario.

j-rock, Friday, 1 June 2007 02:20 (eighteen years ago)

This series may have confirmed Ottawa's status as most the most unlikeable team in the league. There are people I know who have never agreed about anything related to hockey, who are now united in their support of Anaheim, although it could have been anyone really - just not the Senators.

j-rock, Friday, 1 June 2007 02:24 (eighteen years ago)

SUCK ON THAT J-ROCK, TRAITOR TO OUR NATION.

Sundar, Sunday, 3 June 2007 03:10 (eighteen years ago)

Complaints complaints.

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 3 June 2007 03:12 (eighteen years ago)

That's pretty desperate. The Ducks have more Canadians on their team, a Canadian captain, and play a more typically Canadian game. Hating on the Senators doesn't make me, or any of the millions of other people who can't stand them, any less Canadian. It's just one win. They're still going down.

Go Ducks.

j-rock, Sunday, 3 June 2007 04:14 (eighteen years ago)

if the ducks couldn't find a way to win a cup with the Kariya-Selanne line going for 'em, I figure they'll find a way to choke now too

J0hn D., Sunday, 3 June 2007 05:35 (eighteen years ago)

Selanne has been a very spotty performer his entire career.

I don't think the Ducks play a "Canadian" game at all. To me, they play very a very defensive-minded, trap style game. They rely mainly on their amazing goaltender and crashing the net for playoff style garbage goals. Most of their wins in this season's playoffs were one goal games.

I'm sure this sounds like sour grapes coming from a supporter of a team they knocked off, but so be it. The playoffs make teams do whatever is necessary to win, including playing boring ass hockey.

dan m, Sunday, 3 June 2007 06:13 (eighteen years ago)

alfredsson's "goal" was a kick, eh? i was in a bar, but it sure looked as such.

nevertheless, go sens etc.

mookieproof, Sunday, 3 June 2007 06:21 (eighteen years ago)

(You know I'm just talking smack, right, J-Rock my friend? Even as a kid, I never really understood why pro sports teams were supposed to represent anything about their 'home' cities when players, coaches, and owners weren't from said cities half the time. That said, Senators uber alles all the same.)

Sundar, Sunday, 3 June 2007 19:50 (eighteen years ago)

(And, yes, the situation does seem somewhat desperate.)

Sundar, Sunday, 3 June 2007 20:49 (eighteen years ago)

No problem. Talking smack is the best thing about sports.

I hear what you're saying about teams representing the city they are based in. Sports fandom requires the near complete abandonment of reason. I have spent nearly 30 years cheering for a team that hasn't won anything in 40, just because I happened to be born in the 416 (now 905) area code. It's stupid that the results of a game played by millionaires, on behalf of billionaires, can have such a profound impact on how I feel - I know that and yet, they do. The minute that you start thinking about it, the whole thing falls apart.

j-rock, Monday, 4 June 2007 02:11 (eighteen years ago)

I will never cheer for Pronger, that guy's a fucking douchebag. Like if Denis Leary was eight feet tall and elbowed people's faces. Seriously, that hit was more bullshit than the kicked-in Alfie goal (but who gives a fuck? We won by two, iirc)

Will M., Monday, 4 June 2007 15:47 (eighteen years ago)

WILL M OTM

dan m, Monday, 4 June 2007 16:28 (eighteen years ago)

Thank you :D

If one thing can bring Detroit and Ottawa fans together, it's hating that asshole on skates.

Will M., Monday, 4 June 2007 16:30 (eighteen years ago)

I'm not speaking up in defence of headshots, and I actually haven't seen the hit in question since I'm following this series via internet radio from Japan (I'll check it out on YouTube), but based on personal experience, sometimes guys who are a lot taller than other players get into trouble when hitting smaller players. Checks which would be nothing on a similar sized player go high.

Alfredsson has somehow managed to avoid getting labelled as a dirty player in spite of several very questionable checks from behind over the years - including this year's playoffs. Good thing his season is about to end.

j-rock, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 02:24 (eighteen years ago)

i've been rooting for ottawa, but i have to say i don't feel nearly as bad about them losing after alfie's play at the end of the second.

mookieproof, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 03:08 (eighteen years ago)

i've always hated that fuck

The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 03:38 (eighteen years ago)

Alfie could cut a man's throat a centre ice and escape without the refs or the league saying anything. That stunt at the end of the 2nd however, was the work of a frustrated man who was basically announcing to his team, and the world, that he had given up. Les Senators sont finis.

j-rock, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 15:21 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, that shit was lame. I am not impressed.

I am also tired of this "Emery's stock has dramatically risen" bullshit. The guy is a decent goalie, surely, but he didn't bring that team to the finals. That team brought him to the finals. The two softies he let in this game and the two softies he let in last game prove this. I still think we would have had the cup a year ago with a less-assholish Hasek, and maybe even this year if we hadn't entered a fucking bidding war for Only-Good-In-The-Olympics Gerber. Oh, and paying Redden six and a half. What the fuck was that? If it wasn't for the decent moves during the season (Comrie, Saprykin), we would have been completely fucked.

Fisher is still a saint, though. That guy. Pure mensch, on and off the ice. And Neil is so much more than the average dum-dum fighter asshole imo.

I was under the impression that they should've dealt one of those three forwards at the beginning of the year, too. They could've gotten some serious top-flight talent. I mean honestly... imagine that they had traded Alfie for Luongo instead of FL getting Bertuzzi? That'd make for two very happy teams.

Will M., Tuesday, 5 June 2007 15:30 (eighteen years ago)

oh and re: the Pronger hit-- at first I thought he same thing. The guy's tall and it's easy to hit a guy in the head when you've got like 9 inches (or whatever) on him. Now, to be fair, he didn't mean to hurt McAmmond, I don't think. It wasn't a malicious hit or even really a hard one, but the fact remains that he didn't getr his body in the way-- he stuck out his ELBOW on the play. Completely lazy and dirty. McAmmond's one of my favourite players, too, so I was pretty incensed. But honestly. It wasn't as bad as the Holmstrom hit, but the guy is an asshole.

And yeah, Alfie does make some shitty hits, but did you see... okay I forget who, but Neil was down from a hit, and the asshole purposely fell on him stick-and-fist-first. This was the end of the first period maybe, IIRC. Not even on the puck. Not even the guy who delivered the original hit. If Neil had been really injured on the play, this is the kind of shit that gets you year-long suspensions.

Will M., Tuesday, 5 June 2007 16:08 (eighteen years ago)

I just watched the slapshot at Niedermeyer again, and although they won't do a thing about it, the league should suspend him. Beyond being incredibly unsportsmanlike, it was an extremely dangerous play. Alfie's Teflon coating will see him through it however. In case I haven't mentioned it recently, this league is becoming a joke.

Lighten up guys, it could be worse. Ottawa could have won.

The real problem now is that the league is talking about expanding to 32 teams. Kansas City and Las Vegas have been mentioned as possible locations. Also, Buffalo and Toronto are going to make things difficult for Balsille if he tries to move the Predators to Hamilton. Buffalo shouldn't have to rely on Canadian fans to support their team, and the Leafs are just scared that a team nearby might take away from their fanbase of captive idiots (myself included) who tune in and spend lots of money every year to support a team that hasn't shown any real desire to win consistently for decades now. Screw them both, you go Mr.Blackberry!

Will M., Thursday, 7 June 2007 16:21 (eighteen years ago)

I kind of wonder how much of the Pronger hate is from his play vs his (wife's) edmonton diss. (His wife went to my high school btw.) The dirtiest player in the league tag is a stretch as long as Bertuzzi has skates.

bnw, Thursday, 7 June 2007 16:28 (eighteen years ago)

I kind of want to go back to what j-rock said about expanding the league again. Namely: WTF?

dan m, Thursday, 7 June 2007 16:31 (eighteen years ago)

What's the point? If current teams are failing to draw to the point where they're being moved, why add new ones?

dan m, Thursday, 7 June 2007 16:31 (eighteen years ago)

Dirtiest player in the playoffs though, surely. I could care less about the Edm. thing because as much as I like Edmonton (CDN team, after all) with Pronger last year I couldn't be arsed to even cheer for them VERSUS A FKING SUN BELT TEAM and they beat bettman and pronger in my book 6 days a week!

Will M., Thursday, 7 June 2007 16:35 (eighteen years ago)

He's a dirty player all right. There was a Blues/Wings series a few years back where he took a run at Stevie Y, who then ducked at the last second, causing Pronger to run into the boards and fuck himself up bad enough to leave the game. Man, I miss Yzerman.

dan m, Thursday, 7 June 2007 16:42 (eighteen years ago)

That guy is one of the best men to ever play hockey. I've NEVER been a Detroit fan but I am a lifelong Yzerman fan.

mookieproof, Thursday, 7 June 2007 16:47 (eighteen years ago)

j-rock, Friday, 8 June 2007 01:31 (eighteen years ago)

"What's the point? If current teams are failing to draw to the point where they're being moved, why add new ones?"

This one's easy. In the long version one could discuss the huge expansion fees paid to what is still a cash strapped league, and their stubborn insistence on trying to expand the game into non-tradional markets.

OR

The short version: Bettman's an idiot.

j-rock, Friday, 8 June 2007 01:41 (eighteen years ago)

So how do you figure Brodeur got the Vezina over Luongo? Better playoff results? Just curious, I really have no opinion either way but all season it was Luongo Luongo Luongo is great, etc...

dan m, Friday, 15 June 2007 21:30 (eighteen years ago)

didn't jersey do better in the regular season too?

brodeur should just move to edmonton so every single western canadian team can have a top flight goalie and still fail due to shit goalscoring. it can be their "thing" kind of like how eastern canada's "thing" is using more energy to hate other teams than support their own! huzzah!

Will M., Friday, 15 June 2007 21:53 (eighteen years ago)

There was nobody else more valuable to his team than Luongo. I like Crosby, but without him, the Pens are still a good young team with veteran leaders and good goaltending. Without Luongo, the Canucks would never have made the playoffs, and they certainly wouldn't have made it past Dallas in the first round.

j-rock, Friday, 15 June 2007 21:57 (eighteen years ago)

i can't dispute luongo's value to vancouver, but without crosby, the penguins turn into the capitals. sergei gonchar is not a leader, and got a phenomenal proportion of his points on the (crosby) power play. gary roberts is awesome, but was only there the last six weeks of the season. mark recchi hit a wall on february 1, as did malkin. fleury is a great talent, but pretty inconsistent. the defense, apart from gonchar's offense and the young ryan whitney, is subpar. there are decent role players like colby armstrong, etc that can complement crosby but you sure as hell don't want to be relying on them.

mookieproof, Friday, 15 June 2007 22:24 (eighteen years ago)

I HATE Bettman and the other idiots who are doing their best to run the league into the ground.

Balsille did rub the fact that he wanted to move the team as soon as possible in the league's face, but if the new guy is discussing a move to KC, then what's the problem really? Also, how can they be willing to accept $50 million less?! It's absurd. A team in Hamilton would be a huge success, and I'm saying that as a Leafs fan. It might actually be the kick in the ass those bums have been needing for decades now.

I know Bettman is behind this, but I wouldn't be surprised if Buffalo and Toronto are also somehow involved. Nothing like a good conspiracy theory.

mookieproof, Monday, 2 July 2007 02:56 (eighteen years ago)

he's more of a set up guy then Drury.

bnw, Monday, 2 July 2007 03:04 (eighteen years ago)

we're saying that the rangers have no #1 center, I think

Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved, Monday, 2 July 2007 03:06 (eighteen years ago)

for 10 million dollars in his first year gomez better be some sort of #1 center

then again, see also briere.

Will M., Monday, 2 July 2007 03:13 (eighteen years ago)

It didn't take long for the free agent market to become grossly disorted again did it? Gomez is going to make $10 million next year. I think he's a decent player, but he only scored 13 goals last year. Joe Sakic is making less than $6 million, and he scored a 100 points.

Again, what was wrong with Jason LaBarbera?

The Kings *have* to be a better team with Handzus, Preissing, Nagy and Calder, no?

Meanwhile, the whole Eastern Conference got better -- esp. in the goaltender department with Toskala, Fernandez and Vokoun moving on over, and without talking about some of the outrageous UFA signings -- while the Habs are more or less idle (I like the Hamrlik signing, Smolinski is a non-factor).

ducks sign Bertuzzi

OK I don't even really like the guy but srsly stop taking my team!

dan m, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 13:09 (eighteen years ago)

I like their signing of Preissing, he's a pretty solid top-4 or top-6 kind of guy, and Calder/Handzus are alright too, but Nagy is a gamble. I suppose their other moves are good enough that they can afford ot gamble, but yeah. I have a feeling Nagy could have a career year-- they just need to pair him right.

i wonder how rob lang will work out with havlat OH WAIT havlat will be injured for 6 months and OH WAIT lang's been too old for about... 2 years? 3? i forget.

You must be happy about having Hamrlik instead of Souray... that guy. Man. That plus-minus. Say all you want that p/m means nothing but when it's that low...

Will M., Tuesday, 3 July 2007 14:39 (eighteen years ago)

bertuzzi + pronger = most hated team?

kariya - blues ^_^

bnw, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 14:43 (eighteen years ago)

it's so true! the ducks are the new villains of hockey

Will M., Tuesday, 3 July 2007 14:45 (eighteen years ago)

ironic considering they are a franchise based on a movie full of a bunch of good-hearted kids battling villains of hockey. like iceland (?!?!?).

maybe they just wanted a real life portman and fulton for the ducks, like in the movies. Why do I remember them? BASH BROS!

Will M., Tuesday, 3 July 2007 14:47 (eighteen years ago)

Plus/Minus is a great indicator of a player's overall skill! It's not to be trivialized IMO.

I am dismayed that the Wings have let two strong forwards go in favor of keeping Hasek for one more year. They managed to hang on to Chelli, though, so that's good, but who's going to be up front?

dan m, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 15:36 (eighteen years ago)

Hey if you combine Dom and Chris' ages it's like 80.

and last i checked, you still have datsyuk and zetterberg! maybe you'll end up grabbing selanne or something. that'd be a fair trade for bertuzzi. forsberg still needs to end up somewhere as well. there are still some decent depth players kicking around too.

Will M., Tuesday, 3 July 2007 18:06 (eighteen years ago)

Souray has this Big Lug kind of leadership that I'll miss.

alex in montreal, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 18:45 (eighteen years ago)

fedotenko to the isles, kostopoulos to the canadiens, blah blah blah... what is souray doing?

Will M., Thursday, 5 July 2007 16:08 (eighteen years ago)

maybe he'll take a pay cut to stay in montreal or something. i don't know! he should be signed SOMEWHERE by now. maybe he's asking like WAY too much of every team that tries to sign him. what's mtl's cap like right now?

Will M., Thursday, 5 July 2007 16:09 (eighteen years ago)

...aaaand he's gone to Edmonton. I suppose the Oilers will look at him as a savior, but without a god in net behind him, and no unbelievable forwards up front to make up for it, I think he's going to be more of a liability to that team than a boon.

This thread already passed its 1-year anniversary, so without further ado... Detroit Will Not Win The President's Trophy: The NHL Thread 2007/2008
