Here's the bit to advertise your blogs. Get to it!

DG, Friday, 8 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

And again, I'll start:

Visit Grr...! Now featuring a review of the Tomb Raider soundtrack!

Dan Perry, Friday, 8 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Pff, like I can follow Dan's blog with my crappy website, jesus Dan, thanks.

Seriously, Dan's is way cool, go read it. Even if he does disturbingly link to photos of Christina Aguilera.

Ally, Friday, 8 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Your website is most certainly not crappy! Your "Lady Marmalade" review is one of the greatest things I've read this week. And I'm glad I'm not the only one who's noticed that Jessica Simpson suddenly looks even more like Britney Spears. I didn't know that was even possible.

Dan Perry, Friday, 8 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Her new video is like a really bad doppleganger for the Stronger video, with the way it's shot and the way she's dressed.

Ally, Friday, 8 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Jessica Simpson face reminds me of a bird. So does Mena Suvari's, and it's alarming. Birdpeople frighten me.

I feel deeply ashamed of this, but I like the new Jessica Simpson song. I may need therapy.

Nicole, Friday, 8 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yes, Nicole, you do. I mean, you're obviously deeply disturbed to not only like the song but to confess to liking it. I will start a fund to pay for your electroshock therapy.

Mena Suvari has a big forehead.

Ally, Friday, 8 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I know, WTF? I mean, what could be more embarassing to admit to liking? Aaron Carter, maybe? But then people would probably think I was being ironic so it could probably slide.

Why isn't there a Jessica Simpson doll yet? All of the second string pop starlets got one, even Mandy Moore and Vitamin C. And the S Club 7 ones were disturbing, even more so than the Spice Girls dolls. If I were Jessica, I'd feel dissed.

Nicole, Friday, 8 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

When I read that Vitamin C got a doll, I was like, VITAMIN C??? She's not even a B-string diva/starlet, she's like the one that they make keep score cos she's so bad they don't even want her as a backup- backup.

The most disturbing thing I've ever seen was still at KB Toys when me and my mom were looking thru the Spice Girls dolls. There was no Geri, she was apparently very popular. Then this Traino-esque man walks by, clutching a Geri doll. So my mom, being the chatty person she is, stops him, "Oh, you have a Geri! Can I see her? I want to know what it looks like!"

He refused to let her hold the box. He reluctantly let her see the doll, standing about 5 feet away from us, glaring evilly at my mom, and giving me the eye since I was in my most Geri-licious phase then (bright red hair with weird blonde bits - unintentional, Feria is the worst hair dye in the world, somewhat heavy, big enormous platform shoes, ludicrious clothing). Then he hugged the box to his chest again and ran to the cash register.

We SO did not want to know what he was doing with that doll later.

Ally, Friday, 8 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Those types always look like Comic Book Guy.

Nicole, Friday, 8 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

My blog: Four GCSEs... As for popstar dolls, the Divine LC and myself were once crippled by a laughing fit in Beatties in Romford after finding the Britney dolls had a warning which read "Small Parts: DANGER OF SWALLOWING". Damn right it's not for children under 36 months.

DG, Friday, 8 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Doll's are more important than making music now, Hearsay got their's made staright away! I'd like to get some wu-tang clan action figures, they should make stuff like that! Anyway, they only make dolls so popstars can play with themselves!

The closet I'll get to blogging is:

Totally messed up!!!!yabba dabba do!

james e l, Friday, 8 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

DG's blog is another good 'un, sez I. Hell, call me the Agreeable Strumpet.

Dan Perry, Friday, 8 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Cheers Dan, it's nice to see someone appreciates me libelling my old school. I'll update it later, thanks for the reminder.

DG, Friday, 8 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Dan, your Tomb Raider review is making me go out and buy the album after work. BAD DAN.

Ally, Friday, 8 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I know, it sounds good. And here's me thinking I would nevah evah buy anything Tomb Raider related.

Not cause the video game bothers me (it doesn't), but Angelina Jolie and that pseudo-brit accent, yeesh. I pity Noah Taylor for having to be in that movie.

Nicole, Friday, 8 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Angelina Jolie is on my enemy list after I've been compared to her TWICE. "It's not how you look, I mean your mouth doesn't look like it's been repeatedly punched. It's just your behavior and style". THANKS A LOT COWORKER BASTARD. This is when we were deciding who would play who in a movie about our workplace. Then Steph saw Girl Interrupted and was like, "That girl is you!" I really, really need to work on my image.

Ally, Friday, 8 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yeah, you wouldn't want people to think you want to have continuous sex with Billy Bob Thornton.

Nicole, Friday, 8 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It's bad enough people think I made out with Ramon, christ.

Ally, Friday, 8 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The Tomb Raider soundtrack is phat. Hell, I only bought it because it had the "Get Ur Freak On" remix with Nelly Furtado, which I knew was loony, and Outkast. I'm still shocked at how good the Moby track is.

Ooh, this should go to ILM, shouldn't it? How ironic!

Dan Perry, Friday, 8 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

No, they'd only much it up with doompatrol's moany rantings about being Canadian, etc.

Today is "screw ILM" day.

Nicole, Friday, 8 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

ILM = rubbish. We have our own little playground now, screw them and their anti-everything stance. We LOVE Everything!

Ally, Friday, 8 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Don't say his name, or he will turn up here! Seriously! Him or his alter ego, "Ty" or whatever he's calling himself now. Honestly, it's like he doesn't even read what I say, he just errupts... basically ranting back at me what I had said to Tarden about 10 posts earlier. Good god!

Gosh, but now even just talking about what a screaming idiot will only make him appear here, marking his territory like a little pissing dog. Is it me, or does he mention the fact that I have A BAND in every single post he makes? He's far more impressed by it than I am. Sheesh! I bet he's the one sending me those crushline lovenotes...

Och! Unbelievable!

masonic boom (t), Friday, 8 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

He's jealous of you, most likely. And may I add that I have so much more appreciation for Sloan now that I found out that they don't like him?

Nicole, Friday, 8 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Sigh. I know. The whole thing rather amuses me, I've stopped feeling sorry for him.

But hey... Chris Murphy *hates* me!!! Do you still have respect for me? I mean, he WROTE IT DOWN FOR ME and everything! "I HATE KATE" in big bubble letters. Even though I wasn't talking to my BEST MATE, the totally non-scenester Alan McGee at the time, do you still have respect for me? Mwah hah hah. ;-)

Oh, back to the subject at hand- I don't have a blog. I have a whole *mailing list* dedicated to my ramblings. You can join it through the Lollies site www.thelollies.co.uk OH! - Did I mention I was in a BAND?!?!? And I have a COOL DJ BOYFRIEND?!?!? Oh, don't you all wish you were me? Heh.

masonic boom, Friday, 8 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

PTTL, it's not a blog.

Jeff, Friday, 8 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oh, fine, I'll sell myself.

POPSHOTS. It's a blog. It's a webzine. It's a literary site. And it's all MINE! Bwah ha ha.

Feedback (positive / negative / apathetic) is encouraged.

And so.

David Raposa, Friday, 8 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Dont mention Ty's name again, thats the third time. Twice more and he'll appear like Candyman. Check out my mate Eugene's site, www.nusounds.co.uk. You can download music there as well. I recommend Johnny Boy "Poem for Cherryl". I've some writing about music there as well except my name is JackUzi.

What's the new project Robin?

DG, Friday, 8 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Not online yet. Will reveal all on this and other forums when it does. Indeed, will reveal privately to you soon.

Robin Carmody, Friday, 8 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Attention-seeker, blah, blah ...

Robin Carmody, Friday, 8 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oooh! I'm looking forward to it.

DG, Friday, 8 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Robin, who were the two people pictured on yer site? I was thinking the girl was Fracoise Hardy and the bloke was Joe Orton although I'm probably completely wrong.

Michael, Friday, 8 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

http://home.iprimus.com.au/laurapalmer/ But you'd know that if you read the highly inappropriate thread on ILM

Geoff, Saturday, 9 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Fuck you, html. I get paid to design web pages, and I can't even do a proper link.

Otis Wheeler, Saturday, 9 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Dunedin - NZ - Duane & Maryann's diaries

Witty dinner table banter

"Ricko said 'I think the whole thing with smoking is, it's connected to this new amputee craze . . .'
I interrupted and said 'Wait! I just read that a Missy Elliot gig was marred by 'irrelevant wandering in the audience and bizarre talent contests' and now you're telling me there's an amputee craze?'
He said 'Things are a lot different now to how they were in your day.'"

Maryann, Saturday, 9 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

surface vs depth

1471 is the blog section of the above, ie the shit that gets updated a bit more regularly...

gareth, Saturday, 9 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

fuck, i mean 1471. i'm supposed to be good at this html shit, but every time i format on these boards i fuck up, like making the entire sqrpshr thread go italic...

gareth, Saturday, 9 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

skykicki ng, known in some circles as "the blog with more personality than jennifer grey".

Tim, Saturday, 9 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Michael: the photo you refer to is from Saint Etienne's "Foxbase Alpha". Still don't know quite who it is, but I wouldn't be surprised if you're right (especially about Francoise). Certainly that era, anyway.

Robin Carmody, Saturday, 9 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Well, it's not a blog, it's not even a proper website, fact is I haven't invested the time, but you can view my on-going design experimentations href="http://www16.brinkster.com/kimd/default.htm">here.

Kim, Saturday, 9 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

fuck.

Kim, Saturday, 9 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

huh? that didn't look like either of those ppl to me (francoise, orton)...OK i'm going back to have a look 'cause i COULD BE WRONG......

duane zarakov, Sunday, 10 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

gareth's a dawson's fan...yeay! The gr8 thing about Dawsons is that it can mean anything you want it to.

Geoff, Sunday, 10 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I do a weblog or ten. One of them is Groke.

Tom, Tuesday, 12 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

tom - multiple bologs is like multiple mormon wives - wherre hte fuck do you get the energy?

Geoff, Tuesday, 12 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Multiple web groupies? I imagine an Almost Famous type harem surrounding him, all entranced by the entertainment weekly article, each one begging him to "look at my blog".

Nicole, Tuesday, 12 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It's been months since I had a new web groupie, EW or no EW.

Tom, Tuesday, 12 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Tsk, tsk, so spoiled.

You have to wait til the site is back up for them to pop up daily again...

Nicole, Tuesday, 12 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

If multiple weblogs is like multiple wives, well then, uh, Tom's kind of open with Mrs. NYLPM Ewing. Tom, you scoundrel.

Josh, Tuesday, 12 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

He's a Larry Flynt style sleazoid. He should at least grow a moustache to identify himself as such.

Nicole, Tuesday, 12 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I have a moustache, it comes with the beard.

NYLPM should have its name changed to "Freaky Trigger Swingers Club" - go hits go.

Tom, Tuesday, 12 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Well, I guess a beard would give off a sort of "dirty old man in stained raincoat" kind of vibe, so I guess it works.

Nicole, Tuesday, 12 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

As luck would have it Tom has a stained old raincoat as well!!

Josh, Tuesday, 12 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

They hand them out in Beard School.

Tom, Tuesday, 12 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

So THAT'S why my beard won't grow right. I NEVER WENT TO BEARD SCHOOL.

Josh, Tuesday, 12 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

My mum told me never to trust men with beards. She should know, she's married to one.

DG, Tuesday, 12 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

My dad has a beard. So does Fred, it's so weak. If he didn't look better with the beard, I'd totally hire someone to ambush him in the night to shave the fucker off.

Ally, Tuesday, 12 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Your Mum is married to a man who has a beard? That's outrageous!

Here's another one of my weblogs. You might know it. I gave it a bit of a brush-up design wise, though.

Tom, Wednesday, 13 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Two words: Greg Evigan.

Nicole, Wednesday, 13 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

My mom is the definition of outrageous, Tom. The DEFINITION.

Ally, Wednesday, 13 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It certainly sounds like it. She should have a sitcom or something.

It could be called: "I Married Beardie"

Nicole, Wednesday, 13 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It'd have to be directed by David Lynch, really. I mean, my dad has a beard and a shaved head and he bought a $150 walking stick (when we had NO MONEY and were "on the dole", as those wacky Brits say) for no reason other than it was "fucking cool". And don't get me started on my mom, I'm still trying to figure out where her insistance on this idea that she should become an avant garde artist in New York and make statues of the Pope in embarassing positions (on government grant of course) came from.

Ally, Wednesday, 13 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

In case anyone's interested, I've jut updated my blog after a short hiatus (to do with illness and laziness). Today: the Bulger killers and democracy.

DG, Friday, 22 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I mean, my dad has a beard and a shaved head and he bought a $150 walking stick (when we had NO MONEY and were "on the dole", as those wacky Brits say) for no reason other than it was "fucking cool".

Just admit it, Ally. Your father is Ramon Elinevsky.

Otis Wheeler, Sunday, 24 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Just admit it, Ally. Your father is Ramon Elinevsky.

SHUT UP. SHUT UP. SHUT UP. SHUT UP. SHUT UP. Like it's not bad enough my mom emails me that every day. "Hahaha, he wears a military uniform for no reason! You're hanging out with your father!" "Hahahaha, he forced you to watch a film about communist Russia, you're hanging out with your father!" She loves Ramon, and she's never met him. I'm so not going to tell her about his ubercomplex plan to take over the world (which totally wouldn't work, which I told him but he won't listen).

My dad, on the other hand, when shown those pictures you put on the net by my mom, said that Ramon looked like someone who needed "to have [my dad] come to Amherst and kick his fucking ass". Now there's a fight, it'd be like the twilight zone. Though if I told him the world domination plan he'd probably want to join up. They could call each other comrade all day.

My head is about ready to explode from this theory, thanks Otis.

Ally, Sunday, 24 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Don't blame me, I didn't come up with the theory. That was all you.

Otis Wheeler, Monday, 25 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

No, I blame myself, like you could come up with such a cool, fucked up, psychologically-horrible-mindfuck theory anyhow. It takes a special kind of psychopath for that.

Ally, Monday, 25 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I just want to take this opportunity to do some shameless promotion for my blog. a fire inside.

Thank you.

michele, Tuesday, 26 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

This is THE PLACE I have been looking for on the internet. FREE ADVERTISEMENT for my weblogs. There is SEX AND SUNSHINE, my clever blog about music, movies, books, chess etc. and then there is MUSIC 2 THE POWER OF N, my even smarter metablog (needs an update urgently) where I steal other people's ideas and comment on them.

Bloody hell, I cannot find "I love everything" using Google. Does that mean this forum is not googlarized (there was this nice song by Captain Beefheart "I am gonna booglarize you")? What a WASTE OF TIME! I will try to submit my site to Yahoo! again!

alex in mainhattan, Tuesday, 3 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I figured I'd drop another quick plug for GRR because I've begun to share the special hell which is attempting to memorize all of "Carmina Burana". I've stuck the lyrics to one of the best songs in the world, "In taberna quando sumus" up there just to give people a taste of what I have to cram into my head by Monday.

Dan Perry, Tuesday, 3 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

alex, it will appear on google eventually, but theres a bit of a time lag between new sites and their googlarization, and ILE has, incredibly, only been going for about 3 weeks!

gareth, Tuesday, 3 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm resurrecting this topic to talk about a specific issue I have. Every once in a blue moon I get sick of talking to my roommate, so I check my stats online. I never get disturbed by pornographic hits. I do find disturbing people who find my site, however, searching for "dogs in chef hats", "battlebot jay leno" (!?!?!?!?!), or "parker posey's waist". I mean, for fuck's sake, what? Who is looking for these things?

The most disturbing search I get - and I get it often - is people searching for ME SPECIFICALLY. I.e. a google search for Ally Kearney. Am I right to be really freaked out by that? For the record, I believe my mom found my website, being as she figured out that I didn't quit smoking, got a new tattoo, and I got an internal search for "mom" (that was the kicker), and I believe she found it searching specifically for me. I also think someone I work with has done it to look at my webcam. I mean, what's going on there? Does anyone else with a page get an inordinant amount of hits for their own name? I mean, I'm talking like one out of every 10 hits I get is someone searching on my name. WTF?

Ally, Tuesday, 10 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"battlebot jay leno" = Jay Leno was on that Comedy Central show, _Battlebots_. People build robots that fight each other in an enclosed ring / obstacle course. (Not as cool as it sounds.) He had his own bot. It had a big "chin".

As far as being "found out" on the web - I would think that the free exchange of information that typifies the Internet would preclude a sense of secrecy, in terms of how much of yourself you reveal. If you're on the web, chances are someone's going to find you, whether it's your mom, a skeevy co-worker, or someone looking for more of your writings. Curiosity is a strange li'l impulse.

David Raposa, Wednesday, 11 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I guess it's a little too late for me to mention that I have an anti-blog page. Well, sort of. Needs updating, though, starting with Dan's blog.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 12 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ned, it seems to me that you've forgotten In Review. Such a shame to forget such a fine blog as In Review. Such a shame.

Sterling Clover, Thursday, 12 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

As I said, needs updating. Now hush. ;-)

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 12 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hey! I just redesigned my thing! Click here if you've the frame capabilities. If not, tough snootchies.

James, I'm not sure WHY you paid US$30+ for the new Built to Spill, but you're obviously a man of great intelligence and integrity, since you love the Philistines Jr., so I'll let that slide.

David Raposa, Thursday, 30 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It was a spur of the moment thing dave!...

My link seems a little strange...that should be seaplane.blogspot.com

please work!

Ally, Thursday, 30 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Damn it, Ally, you're a fine writer and what-not, blah blah asskiss blah, but would it kill you to NOT host your site on a provider that makes 15 windows pop up on my goddamn screen?

David Raposa, Thursday, 30 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

No, not at all. It'd possibly improve my life, actually. I'm too lazy to do it.

Ally, Thursday, 30 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

PLEASE NOTE I HAVE FINALLY DONE IT AND CHANGED MY PAGE ADDRESS. CLICK HERE IF YOU CARE. YOU DON'T HAVE TO CARE.

i are embarassed!

jess, Friday, 12 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

(or, if you must, summer sausage.)

jess, Friday, 12 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I haven't had time to do what I wanted with my blog, since I got laid off recently. I've been more focused on creating new portfolio pieces, but I'll get back to it at some point.

Nude Spock, Friday, 12 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

er: up-thread ally mentions checking stats re blog-visitors... is this done via some kewl interweb device you build into yr own html or whatever? and if so how and where do i get one oh youngsters with the net-skillz and the get-her hatz...

(basically i want to know when chomsky's been lurking)

mark s, Friday, 12 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Sitemeter.com is the place to go, Mark. Freaky Trigger tested AND approved. I don't know if such things will work w/ Pitas, though. (Your site is a Pita, right?)

David Raposa, Friday, 12 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It does work with pitas. You just have to paste the bit of javascript they give you into your pitas template. This is how i know hair enthusiasts are so keen on my (currently resting) weblog.

Ooh! I have a blog too. It's called Starry vs the Baddies. I'm thinking of changing domain names if anyones got any ideas. I live with the Arsemonkey. Incidentally, I know why your link to Toms site doesn't work. I will fix it for you. The "usual" password, is he?

Sarah, Wednesday, 31 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes. This site is done by Tom who has never posted here. But he is a twat. In the best possible sense. Um.

Josh, Thursday, 1 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

my site is not a blog but i wanted to bump this up to new answers anyway.

also feria RULES at least their chocolate cherry does. plus their gloves are the bestest on the market.

maura, Monday, 5 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Maura's website is a discretionary blog with standards too high for us other bloggers to consider achieving. As they say in the bidness, it "picks its spots".

David Raposa, Monday, 5 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

but dave it is NOT A BLOG! it is also not a diary, or a domain, or a piece of grey matter. it is just a web site, with some links, although not too many off-site ones.

maura, Monday, 5 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Maura, you didn't get the memo? EVERY website is now a "blog". It's part of some elaborate marketing scheme - I don't get it, but whatever. Yes, even this site is now a "blog".

David Raposa, Monday, 5 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It's a frequently updated personal web site heh. If it was a blog then Maura would update it every three hours with what she can see out of her window. The problem being that I think Maura doing this would be ace.

elizabeth anne marjorie, Friday, 22 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It's only just come to mind, but I'm wondering why we don't already have some kind of IL* homepage out there with shortcuts to all the related blogs/site stuff and links to both boards, maybe short bios (would work best if they are primarily on a submission rather than selection basis), etc... I know there is a friendly IL* 'network' of sorts out there already, but it's not directed or comprehensive. Not too open to newcomers, certainly. Maybe there's a good reason we shouldn't have it - there are cliquey connotations, but eh... depends how much familiarity or ease people want I guess. Has this been suggested before?

Kim, Friday, 22 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Not too open to newcomers, certainly.

Is this a joke?!

N., Saturday, 23 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Is that knee-jerk defensiveness? It's a constructive criticism. I don't mean the board is not open in tone, because I think it mostly is, I just mean that the locations of ALL of the blogs and FT and the other related sites that really do seem to be a part of 'this' for a lot of people, aren't that easy to find (or even to know about) if you're somewhat new around here. If avoiding the appearance of a clique is a good thing, easier access to actual information might help people feel like there isn't one. Lots of the blogs or writings that get mentioned frequently, I know I could find if I wanted to, but I'd likely have to travel through another list of links to get there (assuming I haven't bookmarked it that is) - I'm just suggesting that the extended IL* community might be made easier to get around - for anyone.

Kim, Saturday, 23 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Loads of them are linked to on NYLPM!

Josh, Saturday, 23 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't know why I used a ! there.

Josh, Saturday, 23 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

because you sometimes fall prey to irredeemable bumptiousness?

mark s, Saturday, 23 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Please don't strike out at my heart with your truthfully cruel observations.

Josh, Saturday, 23 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, I know. But that's exactly what I'm talking about - first you need to go to FT to find NYPLM and then go through that site to get to the blogs (which I'm sure not too many brand new posters will know to do) and that list of blogs is hardly inclusive and is kind of more ILM/music related than ILE/individual oriented if I'm not mistaken. Which is of course fine, as NYLPM itself is primarily music related. But ILE is not necessarily, so NYPLM or FT are not the most 'effecient' of homepages, if you see what I'm saying. But whatever, it's just an idea.

Kim, Sunday, 24 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, a geocities page is pretty simple to set up. The difficult part would be getting everyone to "okay" having their blogs or pictures linked.

bnw, Sunday, 24 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

linking blogs = not their choice, if they don't want it they shouldn't tell people about them!

Josh, Sunday, 24 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Hahaha....."bumptious"......I haven't heard that word since the days of acne disses.

As for the topic at hand, I think Kim's idea is cool.....I may not show it but I am quite blown away by how so many NYLPM-linked bloggers and ILM/ILE people are just so on point, charming and interesting when talking about music or even their shopping list, and I'd read every blog listed on this hypothetical link page....which would be amazing as I've all but sworn off reading blogs completely thanks to the past few years with their ever-multiplying legions of boring fuckfaces and their stories about what incredibly corny, ho- hum hijinks happened that day with five hundred people named Rob, their super duper reading lists on the sidebar that I guess are supposed to make me not notice their eye-rapingly boring writing, that damn third-person bio bullshit, their fucking "I like: 1. drinking milk through curly straws! 2. putting hot laundry on my face!. 3. drinking blood with Rob while listening to OK Computer! 4. playing ping-pong till ya sweat! :)" lists....oh fucking stop me please.....their, their, their endless misuses of the word MYRIAD, their surveys from another friend of theirs they reply very uncleverly to and then post so we can see how unclever they are.....at the worst of times I was reading blogs so bad I wanted to shut down the internet...friend of a friend of a friend links me to another blog-ring with its identical members and implores to give feedback....bitch how can I, it's the same shit as ever.....big weird word for blog title, same old feces inside.....I want to murder all your yupscum friends and then murder all your alt-lifestyle friends even more slowly because they think their smarter than the yupscum but use the exact same number of too many commas....congratulations, you have somehow given typed text Tourettes syndrome, genius....oh great you discovered Diana Krall!! I'm glad you cried!!!.....who are these fucking people!!!!?!?!?!

Ramosi, Sunday, 24 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I neglected to add indie kids with blogs because 90% of them I don't classify as human beings.....and yes, I know there are much worse , less interesting people on this planet, but they do not have this horrible need to express themselves publicly

Ramosi, Sunday, 24 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Archel (Archel), Monday, 18 November 2002 14:30 (twenty-two years ago)

yes, I've been wondering about this a lot lately. Is there any kind of netiquette concerning linking to someone else's blog? Should the linker ask the linkee's permission? And is it polite to ask someone if they could put a link from their blog to one's own?

I shall be putting a link to Dom's blog later - he asked me earlier this morning.

MarkH (MarkH), Monday, 18 November 2002 14:36 (twenty-two years ago)

ooh yeah, you can get to mine as well from mark's (as if you'd want to (esp. as it hasn't been updated since june)).

Sara(h), Monday, 18 November 2002 14:50 (twenty-two years ago)

markh, my rule of thumb is, if it's advertised here on ilxor they are surely hardly going to object to a link from my page: however if i found it only via someone else's possibly less-travelled obscure blog, i wd probably ask

mark s (mark s), Monday, 18 November 2002 14:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I keep coming back to yours in case you've updated it Steve (if you wonder why the no. of hits keeps going up). Do you think that blogs have a shelf life, with ppl posting to them regularly until a degree of can'tbearsedness creeps in? I suppose there's also the paradox of if you're really busy then you've got plenty to post about but no time / if you're not busy at all, you have plenty of time to post but nothing to talk about.

MarkH (MarkH), Monday, 18 November 2002 14:53 (twenty-two years ago)

bah, my current stasis is the opposite of can't-be-arsedness: it;s that the immediate (hah!) things i (very much) want to put up require ACTUAL REAL WORK and THOUGHT.

mark s (mark s), Monday, 18 November 2002 14:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't really publicise my blog and assume I have a pretty tiny readership all of whom I know. But if someone else publicises it I don't mind (despite knowing that it's crap) because presumably people will only read it once if they don't like it. Or send me condescending email yay.

Archel (Archel), Monday, 18 November 2002 15:01 (twenty-two years ago)

teeny (teeny), Friday, 21 November 2003 20:58 (twenty-one years ago)

teeny, when I make what I think is a particularly good post, I copy it on to my blog!

I want quantity on my blog. Every few days there should be some more unreadable crap. I know this excellent philosophy is shared by many of the critics here.

jay wilkes (Pleasant Plains), Friday, 21 November 2003 21:15 (twenty-one years ago)

i wonder how the recent increase in attention that blogs are getting from the mainstream press (Grauniad, for example) is affecting the attitude of ppl here to their blogs? I don't claim to have or have ever had any journalistic ambition and was quite shocked and taken aback by the idea that blogs are journalism. It sent me into a bit of a tizzy, making me feel unqualified to have a blog in the first place, as if I was messing about in a world which was just too big for me to handle, whereas previously I'd just regarded the whole business as a bit of a larf where I could write crap about what I'd been doing lately without the subject limitations imposed (or at least implied) in other online forums.

Having said that I havent updated it in over 12 months and the journal is in limbo at the moment. I suck. I really will update it soon.

Not-actually-reviews.

I don't like reviews, I don't like "criticism" -- this is just an outgrowth of a blog project last year where I kept track of how many books I read and movies I watched and, because that got boring, started adding comments on what I thought of em. This year, by request, I set aside a separate, public blog for it, and don't limit myself to books and movies.

It's all pretty much first impressions, whatever I can jot down in a couple minutes.

I just started one so when I left comments people could see. I have nothing to write about so I suppose I'll just log in occasionally to keep it active.

Jeez, talk about a sore winner.

Eppy, Monday, 19 November 2007 05:01 (seventeen years ago)

that guy has the most boring writing style i've ever read, and he won a blog competition?

Ste, Monday, 19 November 2007 10:02 (seventeen years ago)

He used the word "uber" five times in one post.

Dom Passantino, Monday, 19 November 2007 10:03 (seventeen years ago)

A classic example of this in occurred in the summer, when a group of allegedly "anti-war" bloggers decided that the most urgent priority of the day was not campaigning for an immediate withdrawal of British troops from Iraq - or trying to prevent potentially catastrophic US/UK strikes on Iran, but linking up with notorious pro-war hawks to try to gain asylum for Iraqi interpreters who had worked for the illegal occupying forces.

Anyone who deviated from the official party line - as laid down by a self-appointed uber elite of British bloggers - faced a cyberspace lynch mob, more in keeping with Nazi Germany than a country which is supposed to pride itself on its support for free speech.

those nazi cyber lynch mobs ain't nothin' to fuck with.

That one guy that hit it and quit it, Monday, 19 November 2007 10:07 (seventeen years ago)

but seriously: what the fuck at the whole thing there, with the interpreters. i was agin the war, but seriously, this guy actually wants more people dead.

I am not sure what the big deal about this paper is. If it's that simple then a non-field theorist like me should be able to follow it. I cannot.

caek, Monday, 19 November 2007 18:32 (seventeen years ago)

yeah, people made the mistake of believing what a normal newspaper wrote about it.

http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20071117-upon-further-review-surfers-new-theory-of-everything-severely-deficient.html

StanM, Monday, 19 November 2007 18:36 (seventeen years ago)

Personally, I dislike New Scientist's arXiv trawling ways; by putting Lisi into the role of the anti-establishment hero (he's a surfer not a scientist...) and publicizing his work before peer review, they (along other media reporting, including our own) may well have compromised Lisi's chance at getting a fair shot a peer review.

OTM.

I've gotten started on a new blog project, but I'm in dire need of a decent name. Its frustrating me because I have the first several entries all set to go, but the name thing is turning into a big mental block for me.
