Sarah, RickyT, Ned, Dan, and Maura are all GOTHS.

Now is the chance for you to shop your fellow posters to the Gothfynder General. Leave no stone unturned!

Tom, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Who turned up to the pub in ALL BLACK, TOM EWING?

Sarah, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Sarah and RickyT goff - I don't see it ! there is zero goth on Starry Vs the Attomick Brane.

How old woz Starry at the height of goth popularity in 1985? and RickyT woz still in primary school !

DJ Martian, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Too much peering through flour-cake make-up has dimmed your senses Starry. My jumper was a respectable navy blue and my T-Shirt was red.

Tom, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ahem, and I haf I mentioned that this Friday I shall be changing my blog to a Livejournal account, boogying on down as the kids say at Slimelight and selling my 'thrift store indie' garb in favour of charity shop black ballgowns.

Sarah, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ahem, I would haf been four.

Sarah, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Red like BLUD then?

Sarah, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

DJ Martian is ABSOLUTELY a Goth incidentally.

Tom, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Aren't beards nordic old-skool goff MR. EWING?

Nicole, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

No - they're hippie which is the topic for another thread.

Tom, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Youth is no excuse. Goth revivalism is (un-)alive and walks among us.

Black clothes and beards need not connote the SIN OF GENE LOVES JEZEBEL. But I shall be monitoring your possible Nordic influence closely, Ewing.

, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Does metal count?

Tom, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I thought that one had to WEAR black to be a goth, not BE black. (He says as he listens to a Skinny Puppy side-project on his work computer.)

Dan Perry, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I thought Ned was a hippie.

Sean, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ooh ooh! I just remember Tom reviewing a Suede single, saying it was like Siouxsie but not as good. Surely that bears the mark of a goff?

Nicole, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Other blatant Buffy-loving goths: SinXor, Welthorpe.

Seek them out.

Tim, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Dan, you are a Goth because Ned is a Goth I would say.

Tom, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Saying something is not as good as Siouxsie is not the same as saying Siouxsie is good.

Tom, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

My most listened to old album in 2001 was JuJu, and it is good to see young Tim Skykicking also exploring the S&theBanshees back cat.

DJ Martian, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

But I remember that the review implied that Siouxsie was good, because you kind of liked the Suede single...

Nicole, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

On the list of possibles: Gareth. Evidence: suspicious W. Yorks heritage / affiliation; reacts like scalded cat if you refer to him as a mod (to some goths the mention of mod is as the garlic to a vampire). What think ye?

Tim, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Tim Finney is surely a fellow member of the black clad hordes.

  1. He likes LOTR = GOTH
  2. He is a big Buffy fan = GOTH
  3. His blog is named after a record released on Guernica = an imprint of 4AD = UBERGOTH

RickyT, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I thought Ned was a hippie.

*gnashes teeth, invokes Hastur the Unspeakable and sacrifices ten thousand people bloodily as smoke and flames rise all about me*

I AM NOT A GODDAMN HIPPIE, MOTHERFUCKER!

There, I'm glad we could get that cleared up.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

4. S+B evidence as revealed above = beyond all doubt now surely

RickyT, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

And yes, goth goth and more goth. Who saw Bauhaus *four* times on the reunion tour? I BELIEVE THAT WOULD BE ME.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The boy of badgers names himself after nocturnal creature which wears a mostly black coat but with GOTH white streak in forehead.

He betrays his fellows well, though.

Tim, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

[Tim H - Gareth is another too young for Goth in the 80s]..but Does Gareth have the The Sisters of Mercy - Temple of love 1992 version in his record collection.

DJ Martian, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Dude, you need to start doing your hair Robert Smith style or something if you don't want people to think you're a hippie.

Nicole, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Tempting, but I'd probably single-handedly contribute to the destruction of the ozone layer if I did.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

can I shop myself? I own records by Fields of the Nephilim, Sisters of Mercy, The Mission &c., wear black a lot, and have been known to go to Goth clubs.

I also like Destiny's Child.

DV, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I plead innocence under addendum 5, subpara VII of the Goth Statute - the "Romo" clause.

Edna Welthorpe, Mrs, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Key question -- is Dickon Edwards goth or glam?

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

He's a hippy.

Tom, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The so-called Romo Clause has been struck from the statute after it was discovered that Romo was tainted throughout with the stain of the Goth, in the form of the Glam lineage mentioned. This was a difficult time in the Gothfynder community, referred to as the "Stevie Vayne and the Dead Vaynes" wars.

Tim, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

He's a hippy.

Debatable.

Maybe the true test of gothness is whether you read Storm Constantine novels. Which I don't -- not yet anyway.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I being goth like escaping yr bio-geographical destiny? Cos if it is, that's Momus up before the Gothfynder for consideration.

RickyT, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I = Is above

RickyT, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I love the idea that Dan is condemned to being a goth on account of being black.

N., Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Dickon Edwards is a Goth, anyway. First band named after Shelley, i.e. either author of Frankenstein or husband thereof. Unless I'm thinking of someone else. Orlando also suspect as a Goth name.

Tom, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Surely everybody knows I'm a just rockabilly boy.

Michael Daddino, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

1. This is surely Hopkins' best performance in YONKS.

2. Martian said 'back cat' which looks like 'black cat' - that sounds gothy to me.

3. I like the Cure, like Tolkien, once wrote a song about Halloween, and have a vast black jumper. I'd wager that it was the biggest jumper on IL*, but someone might yet own an even bigger one.

the pinefox, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The pinegoth?

Nicole, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I thought the proof went more along the lines of:
1) Ned is a member of set goth,
2)Dan = Ned
Substituting 2) into 1) => Dan is a member of set goth.

RickyT, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Momus = "Hairstyle of the Devil" => as goth as you like and then some. Also RELEASED records on old school 4AD.

Tim, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'd like to see the Pinefox all kitted out in goth gear up at stage front at a Lloyd Cole show...just STARING at him.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Did he?

RickyT, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I find Ricky T.'s proof to be perfectly valid.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Momus? Yes indeed, when leading the Happy Family.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Since we're on hairstyles, and the Pinefox has offered himself up for consideration, I'd very be surprised if his hair had never been back- combed... suspicious...

Tim, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

FatNick owns records by Siouxsie and the Banshees, The Damned (if they count).

DG, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

You would shop your OWN BROTHER to the Gothfynder DG? Truly his power is fearsome.

Mind you I would too if I could think of the evidence.

Carsmile Steve went to a Marilyn Manson concert last year.

Tom, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Eye Candy ...Gothic Babe of the week

DJ Martian, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm shopping him before he shops me.

DG, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

There is no way anyone can accuse me of being a goth. Tom on the other hand went through a very long period of wearing black and his hair always seems to have desert dust in it...

Pete, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oh, vanity.

the pinefox, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

He also owns Nurse With Wound and Current 93 records, which are to be found in the GOTH/industrial section of Sister Ray.

RickyT, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

BLACK WIDOW!

Tom, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Does anyone else imagine the Gothfynder as Tim dressed up like the Childcatcher in 'Chitty Chitty Bang Bang' (except with a Batmobile that lures goths but turns into a cage, rather than an icecream van or whatever)?

Edna Welthorpe, Mrs, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Funny you should say that.

the pinefox, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i'm currently wearing chipped black nailpolish. am i goth?

Samantha, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

(He says as he listens to a Skinny Puppy side-project on his work computer.)

If it's Tear Garden, then you are set in your gothitude.

bnw, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Surely we should appoint whoever looks like this dude. Not that I've ever seen 'Witchfinder General' of course, or own it, or in fact own or have seen any horror films at all. Nope, not me. That's what goths do.

DG, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

dg that movie looks awesome!

ethan, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Peter Cushing in this seminal movie. It really is a rollicking piece of stovepipe hat wearing Hammer Horror (though the horror aspect is toned down). Cushing is possibly at his evilest - so should suit Hopkins perfectly.

Pete, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

That's not Peter Cushing, that's Vincent Price you dolt.

[DG suddenly feels he's walked into a trap]

DG, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Could DG actually stand for Darke Goth?

Nicole, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Death Grunt

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

ahhhh DG i was going to point out the Matthew Hopkins ---> Tim Hopkins witch/goth fynder general thing out. but then RickyT pointed out that this would mean acknowledging awareness of THE HISTORY OF THE DARKE ARTS which of course = i am a GOTH.

except that science has proven that i am a hippy. so there!

katie, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I appear to have got away with it somehow.

DG, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Sorry, was on the bog.

A-ha-ha-ha DG. For recognising Horror film stars you are obviously in league with the lovers of all things horrific and therefore satanic and therefore a Darke Goth. Ha ha ha.

You also have black hair which works every time as a back-up reason. And FatNick is your familiar.

Pete, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Erm...I don't have black hair, but FatNick is certainly *DIABOLICAL* though that's nothing to do with me.
Besides, you knew that saying it was Peter Cushing was wrong, so logically you (probably) knew the right answer too!

DG, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm really, REALLY glad that Ned is not a hippy. I'd make a very poor hippie.

Dan Perry, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Remind me again in whose flat I saw "Lust Of A Vampire" (or "Lust For A Vampire", I forget the outcome of this pub discussion).

Tom, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm really, REALLY glad that Ned is not a hippy. I'd make a very poor hippie.

Joei might also complain about the smell.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I am concerned that I couldn't decide how the word "hippy" should be spelled. I am embarragothed.

Dan Perry, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Actually, *here's* your goths. Oh dear.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Scary! and only 15 and 13 years each.

jel, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I am paler than your average goth (I am the palest person I have ever seen). And I dye my hair black now. And I listen to melancholy (but not actually goth) music. I wear a lot of black. My speech can sometimes be lofty and flowery.

Melissa W, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

You've done it now Melissa, you'd better flee while there's still time.

DG, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hey, I think I have the same shoes as Vanity Flair, the current Gothic Babe of the Week.

Kim, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I have a Bauhaus CD and A Rose Chronicles EP "Awaiting Eternity"...They are my only goth creditentials.

jel, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

oh and a fields of the nephilim tape. but i never really liked it.

jel, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm sure I could write a song about a goth girl.

jel, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i dream i walk into NoRMaN PHaY's shop and he comes thru a trapdoor on a big organ

Julie Patchouli, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I always wanted to be a goth. Mainly for the gurlz. But I can't stand that awful awful music they listen to.

electric sound of jim, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

electric sound sums it up nicely!

jel, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I just thought of something; what if I am the Kandy Raver inverse to Ned's Gloomy Gothiness? That may be more depressing than being a hippy.

Dan Perry, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I might be a third goth. My wardrobe says as much, anyways.

Honda, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

You implying I don't listen to techno? Punk.

That said, if you go to this wonderful site, it is clear that being a raver derives from gothness. Possibly.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

reason gfg matthew hopkins seeXors and kills goths = he envies them sexually as proved in some stupid film made in 1968 ie those seeXored and killed = woodstock hippies (like tim h wishes he was)

buffy = goth => also the gogos and clueless = goth ah yes of course

hmmm i come home and find the children playing a game they do not entirely understand

mark s, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

You're quite right Mark, notorious vampire band the Go-Gos and film- about-vampires Clueless are Goth as anything.

Tom, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

This person emailed me recently to see if I had a particular record by "Friends of Carlotta". I was honored!

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

NeD SeZ:

Maybe the true test of gothness is whether you read Storm Constantine novels. Which I don't -- not yet anyway.

Poppy Z. Brite, surely Ned? ER....Ooops.

Norman Phay, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

HA HA.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

GoTHiX0R iN eXCeLSiS Yuo LaMeRZ! @# ! @# !

Norman Phay, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Vincent Price went to my high school. That poor bastard.

bnw, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I have been wevealed! (dissolves into a swarm of rats which scuttle away, although one pauses to nip RickyT's toe).

Actually a friend of mine became a goth when he was fifteen for the make-up, the parties and the "pansexuality". He tried to convert me, but I resisted because it seemed to necessitate having sex with ugly people.

Tim, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

sex with ugly people? sign me up!

electric sound of jim, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Er, for three years I helped throw the Wome(y)n's Concerns House Annual Goth Ball.

I suppose you better take me to East Anglia and burn me at the stake then.

rosemary, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Since Tim, Pete and Tom seem to be instigating the goth pogrom, I wonder how we could characterise THEM, ie what is the OPPOSITE OF THE GOTHYXoR? I can only think: PUB ROCK. Obviously this has good bits: ie the pub. BUT ALSO: dodgy dress "sense": check. Men of "a certain size": check. Obsession with "keeping it real": check. QED.

Edna Welthorpe, Mrs, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

See how the serpent writhes when it is cornered: is it yet a fortnight since Welthorpe considered purchasing BLACK HAIR DYE on these very pages?

It has also been brought to my attention that Edna is RELATED to the Nephilim (not by blood, obv., that would be dangerous).

Tim, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The Ducks Deluxe revival starts HEAH.

Tom, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Am tickled by the image of Hopkins wearing a cheese cloth shirt belting out rough-hewn boogie in some boozer thirty miles outside of London in any direction.

Mark Morris, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It's a fair cop. Bring on Larry Wallis.

Although Welthorpe might have to plead guiltier than I on charges of (a) guitar-toting (b) thirty miles out of London (c) cheesecloth.

Tim, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Uber-Anti-Goth = HornbyXoR

where does the gfg stand on the stockholm monsters?

mark s, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Self-proclaimed uber-anti-Hornby = SinXor => SinXor *so* goth.

The Stockholm Monsters were a bunch of Perry Boys (and girls).

Tim, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oh god Mark S you do not know whot you may be UNLEASHING.

Whot is cheesecloth? I only wear (and listen to) BLACK LACE.

Sarah, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Taking an interest in Dutch bludsucking 'vampires' news story = shit, I am a goth.

Andrew L, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I *may* be pub-rock. But in a good way only. I've certainly belted out some rough-hewn boogie in my time. AND (beat this) I have the ultimate in pub-rock credentials - an e-mail from Dumpy of Dumpy's Rusty Nuts. Actually I was slightly disappointed that he could *do* e-mail - hopefully his PC has fag ash and beer stains all over it.

Dr. C, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Dr C, you are my hero.

chris, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Tim H = Pub Rock? I have a vague recollection of him telling me he liked Brinsley Schwarz: do they count as part of the genre?
In any case I have seen often seen him in a pub as immovable as any rock.

David, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

God, I'm such a seenster.

Sorry

David, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yes they count, but were no good. I'm more from the Dr. Feelgood axis myself.

Dr. C, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

>>> Although Welthorpe might have to plead guiltier than I on charges of (a) guitar-toting (b) thirty miles out of London (c) cheesecloth.

This is fabulous stuff.

But what is 'cheesecloth'?

the pinefox, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"Men of "a certain size" - the range of size between Pete B and Tim H is quite large Edna, and were you a man would surely include you.

Tom, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

for STORM CONSTANTINE upthread subst. ALAN MOORE!! (since SC is *objectively* unreadable so not a workable test)

actually this is one of the few tests I pass (or fail, if that's yr thing)

mark s, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'll be the judge of that.

Sinker is the JAZZ-GOTH and to be mistrusted.

Tim, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

>>Men of "a certain size" - the range of size between Pete B and Tim H is quite large Edna, and were you a man would surely include you.<<

Edna = 10 stone (on xmas day) - I doubt this is in the range of PB > TH. (PB has bones made out of lead as any fule kno). Anti-GothZoR = those not enraged at not being skinny enuff to be GothZoR.

Edna Welthorpe, Mrs, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Another grammar pile-up, but the point remains: antigoths are enraged that they never had the bone structure to look good in kohl and white foundation!

Edna Welthorpe, Mrs, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Where can I get white foundation? All foundation is too dark and yellow for me.

Melissa W, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"Look good in kohl and white foundation": ?

Number of times I have heard Edna complain about her own lardiness in past year = many.

Tim, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

**Men of "a certain size" - the range of size between Pete B and Tim H is quite large Edna, and were you a man would surely include you**.

But does it include YOU, Tom?

**(a) guitar-toting (b) thirty miles out of London (c) cheesecloth**

If these are the criteria then I also fail.

a) I have 'beaten one or two to death' but hopefully neither 'toted' or 'wielded' one.

b) What? Luton or somewhere. Not guilty

c) Like PF, I've *heard* of it.

But if further proof is needed in addition to Dumpy's e-mail then I will play this card : I am the owner of a battered denim jacket with a "Live Stiffs" badge on it. Will this do?

Dr. C, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

After the asteroid-sized omelette I just ate I am well out of the pub rock range and into Boo-Yaa Tribe territory. Bloat.

Tom, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Dr. C, I don't think any more evidence is needed. You are the living embodiment of Pub Rock.

(I deny any special fondness for Brinsley Schwartz, btw, but happily and fully admit to an ongoing regard for 'Basher' Lowe).

Tim, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Relationship of mooted size (me being lower bound I assume at 5'2" and waist of 30") and weight (where lead bones and 15 stone weight would feature) has not been asserted. I suggest that you may well be within the bounds as set by nebuloous concept size. And Tom may well be outside it.

Pete, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Where can I get white foundation? All foundation is too dark and yellow for me.

I think MAC has one that's very nearly white. But all the goffs just slap on that white pancake makeup that you can get for Halloween getups.

Nicole, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I think MAC has one that's very nearly white.

They used to. They had powder foundation in W10, which was basically just white with a slight pink tint to it. It was absolutely perfect. But they discontinued it. They have liquid in W15 still, though, but it's not nearly light enough.

Melissa W, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

haha this thread has worked excellently to REVEAL THE EVIL in our midst: unmitigated ppl's-foe rockists and NICK LOWE APOLOGISTS. Taking sides: Nod of the Neph vs the "jesus" of "cool"...

mark s, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Its tough to find a true goth in Dunedin in my opinion, no pretty face make up and camoflage face paint.

we do have university arts students who have a penchant for shaving their hair wa-a-y up their foreheads for that elizabethan feel. King Goth in Dunedin ( well the closest to the title I know, he is all over the place) senses kindred spirits among this lot. He said to me that he could not wait until the arts students came back with all those luscious art student babes. Sickningly enough they seem to be attracted to his predatory tutor feralness too...

Menelaus Darcy, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Menelaus, sometimes Goths walk unmade-up among us: it becomes necessary to look for other clues.

Lip goatees are just one such.

Tim, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Nod of the Neffs was in the year above me at school... GAH, what am I SAYING???

Edna Welthorpe, Mrs, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

If Tom will not sink to DG levels and shop his own flesh and blood I will shop Dr Groove, for he only dresses in black, has blatantly goth hair and a silly beard, is often to be seen with a very pale face drinking ridiculous drinks.

alext, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Silly drinks yes but not actually snakebite or cider & black. Otherwise yes. Alex T is not a Goth though has had carnal knowledge of them - what is the penalty for that GFG?

Tom, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Nod of the Neffs was in the year above me at school... GAH, what am I SAYING???

HA HA HA HA HA HA. I have vengeance for your strop over your Tzara moniker. Did you cover yourself in flour trying to be like him?

Ned Raggett, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I think poor Alex may have suffered enough.

Ned laughs too much to be a Goth... I'm back to thinking he's a hippy.

Tim, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

That's why he gets on so well w/Chris Robinson, they smoke weed together and compare tie-dying technigues.

Nicole, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I too have had carnal knowledge of someone who used to be into the Neff, am I tainted? Also I used to houseshare with an ex-goth (as did Pete). I think I would rather see myself as an anthropologist of goth than someone who is tarred with that brush due to my close proximity to goths.

Emma, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

If house-sharing with fire-honourers were a crime of the Goth variety then I should have to judge myself most harshly. Be on your guard, though.

Tim, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ned laughs too much to be a Goth... I'm back to thinking he's a hippy.

That's why he gets on so well w/Chris Robinson

*SIGH* It is clear that *NONE* will understand me. I am a legend in my own mind. *flounces off*

Ned Raggett, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Actually I used to share a house with a Goth. I'd forgotten that.

Is Nicky D a Goth?

the pinefox, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

PF: yes.

Tim, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Very much so, it was congirm on Tuesday. Stick the Goth Finding Pin in him and he squeels.

Pete, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I will not allow you all to turn me into a hippie! I was born goth! I've enjoyed songs by Cradle Of Filth! I own more than one Cleopatra compilation! (Um, wait, scratch that last one 'cuz it's embarrassing.)

Dan Perry, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

'Goth' indeed! You may have noticed that I MOVED SEATS when you started talking about Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

N., Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

That is only because you are The Lord Of Hell (ie very goth indeed) and hence made uncomfortable by talk of your arch enemy.

RickyT, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

My first boyfriend was a goth.

But I was 16 - so I plead innocence.

Anna, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I could have got away with so much rubbish when I was 16. If only I'd known all the girls were so innocent/dim. They seemed so discerning at the time! I suppose there's nothing to stop me hitting on them now. No, I suppose there is, really.

N., Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

16 year old boys can only get away with all sorts of rubbish on 13 year old girls. Not 16 year old girls who may often be innocent and / or dim but not that innocent and / or dim.

Emma, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

N. = another self-revealed repressive QED. I note I haf now convincingly exposed Hopkins as a hippy uber-rockist AND a latent goth. This leaves me free to ask an entirely unrelated and non-telling question: does anyone know if John Ruskin's ON THE NATURE OF GOTHIC is available on the web somewhere? I haf googled but to no avail (to many hits to plough through). E-text stalwarts I look to thee...

mark s, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

hush, goth.

chris, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I can only find 'The King of the Golden River' , 'Sesame and Lilies' and 'Unto This Last' e-texts. Why don't you volunteer to type it all in / scan & proofread it for Project Gutenberg?

N., Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

darkwave
Only know of this site as someone has visited my fledgling blog through them. God knows how.

stevo, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

U&K: Timothy G. Hopkins (anag.) -- TIM H. SO = PINKYGOTH!

( "pinkygoth" = a goth who is into THE PINKETRON as any fule kno, hence hoppy is an EMOGOFF!!!!)

Edna Welthorpe, Mrs, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Question is, how does EW know what 'The Pinketron' is if she's not a Goth? No-one else has ever heard of it.

the pinefox, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

what's the G stand for anyway? (haha as if we don't know)

N. can you link me to those e-texts? I'm still on LC475 and all sites except greenspun, joshblog and maura-com take hours to download, so shortcuts are u&k. sorry.

(stevo i need yr expertise on ANIMAL PARA-LINGUISTICS please)

(friday = mark s orders everyone about day)

mark s, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yes sir, no sir, permission to speak sir.

John Ruskin e-texts.

You'll have to scroll down - I'm not doing that for you.

N., Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

PF your grasp of logic is wacko: the PF hasn't heard of it /= no one else has heard of it. In fact a stronger case cd be made for the very opposite being true.

Edna Welthorpe, Mrs, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I've never heard of it either.

Tim, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hey - who are you calling dim at 16 N.? I said innocent, there is a difference. Also Gothishness is the reason I finished with him, so you cannot really get away with that much.

Anna, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Anna being experienced at dumping goths firmly puts her on the GFG's side I would imagine. Armed with our pins and eyeliner sensors. We seek paleface wherever he is.

Pete, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Have a great weekend everybody.

I have just, in the last hour or so, *officially* reformed band, so am very happy. Not goth. Possibly pub rock.

Beer calls (loudly). Bye.

Dr. C, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

two weeks pass...
I am listening to Lambchop covering _This Corrosion_. Does this mean that all Alt-Country is GOTH???

alext, Monday, 18 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I would imagine so.

Pete, Monday, 18 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm not a goth.

alix, Monday, 18 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Sorry Lixi, but I have a signed confession of Gothness from you. It's in the form of a text message and it reads "I am a Goth".

Tim, Monday, 18 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Goths v Goths FITE

Alan Trewartha, Monday, 18 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

maura, Monday, 18 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yeuch!

RickyT, Monday, 18 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

yikes! is that freak's story out yet? do we know who he is? I've only seen the "adverts" for him so far.

chris, Monday, 18 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

what, you didn't watch the ppv last night? for shame.

maura, Monday, 18 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I didn't think there was one over here? I'll get to see it in the week tho fortunately! was it good?

I have been neglecting WWF lately, for shame.

chris, Monday, 18 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I have a new favorite wrestler!

Dan Perry, Monday, 18 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

it was ok in parts although the return of the nwo is causing much consternation amongst my close associates. (every time they came onscreen the excitement that had been there ground to a halt.) goldust went up against

ROB

VAN

DAM

who is my personal favorite wrestler of right now because of the way he flies! and flips!—it's almost like he was trained by bela karolyi.

maura, Monday, 18 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oooh I look forward to that, even though I don't like RVD so much. The last thing I saw was Regal getting Coach with the brass knuckles shortly before getting done over by Edge. Must catch up, maybe tonight.

chris, Monday, 18 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Damn, missed that PPV coz it was on Sky and I am poor and don't have sky sports! :(...(off to WWF.com to read the results!)...

j>e>l, Monday, 18 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

::ahem::

even tho the conversation has turned to wrestling, i think you all are forgetting something...

...like a certain dream i had?

it's already known 'round the world that ilx is one big gothy farm.

nancy b., Monday, 18 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

that dream has apparently vanished wiv the day dame nancy b

mark s, Monday, 18 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

wrestling is the sports of goths...well...ahem...probably not...I don't suppose there is a sport of goths.

j>e>l, Monday, 18 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

thank goodness for jess, else i would be flustered -and- embarrassed.

nancy b., Monday, 18 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

four months pass...
I am NOT, repeat NOT, a hippy. I've had all kinds of abuse thrown at me in my lifetime to date, but that takes the biscuit! I balk at henna tattoos! I grimace at tie-dye! I shirk from flowers in hair!

If anything, I'm bit Goth mixed with Mod. Which makes me a God.

...

... or a Moth.

Dickon, Wednesday, 10 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Goth!

(No! I'm not a hippy either!)

I would say, based solely on that mix cd you sent me, that you are not a goth and definately not a hippie.

All week we work for daytime TV
When we laugh we say "tee hee hee"
We are mod mock rock goths

sexyDancer, Wednesday, 25 August 2004 16:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Thats you mei? Nice pic :)

I... don't think I even need to comment about myself on a thread like this. I'll just sit here quietly until Tad or Ned or Col or Adam or Jim come along and point at me shouting BLACK!! BLLLAACCKK!

And so on. *grumble*

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 22:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I was not even thinking of doing so, Trayce, and I'm sure the others weren't either. Too obvious.

Anyway. On to other topics. Hmmm. Taken any more photos of graveyards lately?

the music mole (colin s barrow), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 22:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha.

I mean look at me! Goth? Nahh...

Are goths ILX's human analogue for cats?

Leeeter van den Hoogenband (Leee), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 22:17 (twenty-one years ago)

good lord no

purple patch (electricsound), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 22:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Goths do like cats don't they? There seems to be an affinity there.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 22:18 (twenty-one years ago)

despite my skull messenger bag i'm not goffy and i like cats

purple patch (electricsound), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 22:20 (twenty-one years ago)

You are not a goth because, unlike a goth, you say 'new shoes or PVC pants? Pah! I would rather buy the new Toaster 7"'.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 22:25 (twenty-one years ago)

And I am not a goth, but have many goth friends. I am, perhaps, a goth enabler.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 22:34 (twenty-one years ago)

On recent evidence I'd say all Australians are goths in denial.

Wooden (Wooden), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 23:04 (twenty-one years ago)

just the other day Harold was extolling the virtues of PVC so i don't think he's denying it at all

purple patch (electricsound), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 23:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Thats darn tootin'.

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 23:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Thursday, 26 August 2004 00:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Trayce, why do you always give in to the Darkside? :p

Leeeter van den Hoogenband (Leee), Thursday, 26 August 2004 00:12 (twenty-one years ago)

W-w-well... I dont like the Darkness! :/

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 26 August 2004 00:13 (twenty-one years ago)

ONE Cure album? ONE? Damn. I have approximately ten Cure albums. And I'm the New Romantic fanatic! (Heh. It's okay. My Cure fandom is based on this subconscious bias I have toward British musical artists. I think.) But wait. I've become quite the Lenore fanatic too. Um, and for years, my favorite color in the world was black. And I stay out of the sun as much as possible. And I love the night time. And I love haunted houses. And my Skinny Puppy/VNV Nation/Front 242 fanatic friend made me a mix CD with the aforementioned artists and I love them all now. And I love The Crow.

But I'm still the New Romantic fanatic. Uh, even though I don't own any frilly blouses. Or pirate outfits. Okay, CLOSETED New Romantic fanatic. Though New Romanticism is sorta like a cousin of the "goth" scene. But not even siblings. Just wanted to clear that up. Okay?

Many Coloured Halo (Dee the Lurker), Thursday, 26 August 2004 00:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh yeah, and Trayce? I think you'll be happy to know that I NOW associate you completely with They Might Be Giants. Though I think the Barenaked Ladies also involuntarily snuck in there too. So, um, yay, I guess. ;)

Many Coloured Halo (Dee the Lurker), Thursday, 26 August 2004 04:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, that's me, taken a few of weeks ago in Haugesund, Norway.

Um, it's true that the sun doesn't like me very much! Though it does give me lots of freckles as presents.

The thing is, it occurred to me that I might somehow have become a goth without noticing. In my experience people who are goths tend to say they're not, and I'd always assumed most of them were being, well, less than honest with themselves.

But I do wear black a lot(it's practical and goes with anything), sometimes hang out in clubs where los of Goths go, I like Bauhaus, Killing Joke (I know Alex, they're not goths,, but...), NIN, Tool and I've even checked out VNV Nation and Wolsheim.

Push comes to shove my favourite alcoholic drink might just be cider and black (though I actually just prefer the black).

I think gothettes are cute :-)

So I still say I'm not a goth, but I would say that, wouldn't I, if I was one?

mei (mei), Thursday, 26 August 2004 12:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Are goths ILX's human analogue for cats?

And if they are, can we stroke goths under their chins?

(and do they lick their genitals in public?)

A computer magazine is going to feature me in its blogging column in a forthcoming issue. I think I was rather nasty to goths in the interview, so I'm a little apprehensive about what my gothic friends are going to think.

caitlin (caitlin), Thursday, 26 August 2004 16:44 (twenty-one years ago)
