Andrew (enneff), Friday, 28 July 2006 00:57 (eighteen years ago)

i feel like we could dig up dozens of these sites if we wanted to but what's the point in finding one? people with severe OCD are rarely as interesting as you think they are going to be. it's all like listening to other people's dreams.

Andrew (enneff), Friday, 28 July 2006 01:04 (eighteen years ago)

I'm gonna have to download this song from Bubsy that he's listened to 1,200,000 times. It must be pretty good.

Marmot 4-Tay: Hold these goddamn chickens! (marmotwolof), Friday, 28 July 2006 01:04 (eighteen years ago)

I'm pretty sure I have a ROM of Bubsy at home. I'll have a look after work and post an mp3 if I've got it.

Andrew (enneff), Friday, 28 July 2006 01:21 (eighteen years ago)

He seems like an autistic guy. What would have been reffered to in past insensitive times as an "idiot savant"

Mr Jones (Mr Jones), Friday, 28 July 2006 01:36 (eighteen years ago)

These sites have sound files for the SNES version:
http://www.snesmusic.org/v2/profile.php?profile=set&selected=477
http://www.zophar.net/zsnes/spc/

You'll need a plugin to play spc files, of course.

I found a post where he even gives the password for the level he's talking about. There is no track actually called "Out Where The Lake Is", he made that up, according to his post here:
http://www.gimptalk.com/forum/topic/Music-2522-1.html

"Out Where the Lake Is", as I call it (from chapter 10 on "Bubsy in: Claws Encounters of the Furred Kind" (passcode MSFCTS)), is my all-time top favorite song, of which, during the 12 years I've had it, I've listened to it anywhere from 900,000 to 1,200,000 times.

Try that password when you get home, and we can figure out which track he means.
(Yes, I did some googling. I'm genuinely curious about this song!)

Marmot 4-Tay: Hold these goddamn chickens! (marmotwolof), Friday, 28 July 2006 01:55 (eighteen years ago)

All right, I dug up the Genesis ROM myself and entered the Chapter 10 password. The actual name of the track is "Bluegrass Bobcat" by Matt Berardo. It's track 7 on snesmusic's spc set and track 10 on zophar's.

It's a generic bluegrass type song. The SNES version has synth banjo and fiddle, but the Genesis version the Ulillillia guy is obsessed with is a bit more primitive - just your basic midi sounds.

Marmot 4-Tay: Hold these goddamn chickens! (marmotwolof), Friday, 28 July 2006 03:20 (eighteen years ago)

YSI?????!!!!!!

Jena (JenaP), Friday, 28 July 2006 04:02 (eighteen years ago)

If you're on a PC get the SNESAmp Plugin to play the music downloadable from the above URLs.

Andrew (enneff), Friday, 28 July 2006 04:17 (eighteen years ago)

I'm uploading an mp3 right now, which should be available here in a few moments.

he reminds me how lost and miserable people can be - obviously. and it gets a lot worse than that. i tune out the intense, blatant suffering of others constantly.

having said that, the nintendo bluegrass is pretty sweet. not sure i'd want to listen to it 1,200,000 times though.

jhoshea (scoopsnoodle), Friday, 28 July 2006 05:04 (eighteen years ago)

once was enough

a name means a lot just by itself (lfam), Friday, 28 July 2006 05:04 (eighteen years ago)

Funnily, it wasn't his totally insane (but incredibly well-articulated and reasoned) writings but hearing that song that really hammered home to me just how mentally ill this guy really is.

Andrew (enneff), Friday, 28 July 2006 05:09 (eighteen years ago)

You guys gotta hear the Genesis version:

Originally coming with Eternal Champions, a game I dislike, the Sega Genesis system itself didn't seem exciting. Then, along comes Bubsy. For days on end, I'd be playing "Bubsy in: Claws Encounters of the Furred Kind". This was my top favorite game of all time. It's the only game that I know of from this time where the screen can scroll at even 95 pixels per frame (causing the background to move nearly 3 pixels per frame able to go from the top of the level to the very bottom in just a half of a second).

It's waaaay shittier, but it's obviously the one he's referring to. The Genesis Bubsy Soundtrack ("Bluegrass Bobcat" is track six) and the plugin to play it.

Marmot 4-Tay: Hold these goddamn chickens! (marmotwolof), Friday, 28 July 2006 05:21 (eighteen years ago)

I hope the guy has actually been diagnosed as autistic and is under medical care -- I very much get the sense that he hasn't been, though.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Friday, 28 July 2006 05:22 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, the part about how his family doesn't like/doesn't have much time for taking him places and doing things with him bummed me out, too. He seems neglected.

Marmot 4-Tay: Hold these goddamn chickens! (marmotwolof), Friday, 28 July 2006 05:37 (eighteen years ago)

I'd say he definitely was neglected. The source of his problems seem to stem from the parents - leaving him, an autistic child, with video games as a baby sitter seems to be the basis for most of his neuroses.

Andrew (enneff), Friday, 28 July 2006 10:35 (eighteen years ago)

dood rode the short bus - clearly got some mental disability. I wouldn't call him articulate or intelligent.
-- Shakey Mo Collier (audiobo...), July 27th, 2006 6:43 PM.

wtf dude

I donno I found this site fascinating. I think aspects of it are definitely depressing, because it does seem like he's not been properly cared for, but what can you do in a case like that? He's written so much in so much detail that it really gives you more insight into autism than reading some reference book on it...its a window into his, uh, 'mind game.'

deej.. (deej..), Friday, 28 July 2006 14:19 (eighteen years ago)

all I was saying was that he's dysfunctional, what's the big deal about that? (And he did ride the "short bus" - he says so in his description of school)

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 28 July 2006 14:53 (eighteen years ago)

I don't mean to be derisive - I feel totally sorry for this guy and feel any hostility should be more rightly directed at his parents/family, who seem totally disengaged.

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 28 July 2006 14:56 (eighteen years ago)

The site is gone! Hopefully not forever...

deej.. (deej..), Friday, 28 July 2006 19:17 (eighteen years ago)

Its kinda sad that, even though he professes to spend all his time with his computer/the internet, he's been unable to properly identify his "all-time top favorite song" of the last 12 years when it took ILE 10 minutes.

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 28 July 2006 19:18 (eighteen years ago)

I was thinking of sending him an email about it! I wonder if he knows (or would even care) that there is a superior version.

Mr Jones (Mr Jones), Friday, 28 July 2006 19:26 (eighteen years ago)

In any case here's why the site's been going down:
Notice: I'm currently undergoing an upgrade to my hosting plan and my website may be down for a short while. This upgrade will span the next week.

I would actually like to try these videogames he's working on if he ever finishes them and puts them online.
And then there's the part where he talks bout wanting to make his own music loops...

Marmot 4-Tay: Hold these goddamn chickens! (marmotwolof), Friday, 28 July 2006 19:34 (eighteen years ago)

really, someone go on and e-mail him about the song. tell him what the real name of it is, about the better version, and send him the nicer mp3 of it (that was it posted up there, right?). i would like to do this, but i'm lazy.

andy dale (andy dale), Friday, 28 July 2006 19:43 (eighteen years ago)

or crap, maybe i will do it later on tonight, if no one else does first.

andy dale (andy dale), Friday, 28 July 2006 20:04 (eighteen years ago)

This guy makes me sad, mostly because he makes me think of what would happen to my younger brother if he didn't have anyone looking out for him.

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Friday, 28 July 2006 20:12 (eighteen years ago)

To me this site is amazing, all the pitying is almost condescending I think, like dude isn't asking for apologies, he's just telling it like it is.

deej.. (deej..), Friday, 28 July 2006 20:27 (eighteen years ago)

let's ask him if he's happy. I bet the answer is "no".

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 28 July 2006 20:30 (eighteen years ago)

if a person that's totally isolated and alienated from the bulk of humanity while living in their own filth and subsisting on crap isn't worthy of pity I don't know who is.

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 28 July 2006 20:32 (eighteen years ago)

I emailed him. I told him about the composer and track name and I included links to the snesmusic page and Andrew's mp3. I told him to keep up the good work on his website and game development.

Marmot 4-Tay: Hold these goddamn chickens! (marmotwolof), Friday, 28 July 2006 20:59 (eighteen years ago)

The way he classified himself and his daily ongoings is pretty amazing.

Did anything happen to him on June 13th?

However, his "index" is more of a table of contents than an actual index.

Lord in heaven, I need to leave the library for the day.

molly d (mollyd), Friday, 28 July 2006 21:01 (eighteen years ago)

He wrote me back, very polite.
He wondered what Matt Berardo would think of him listening to the song so many times, mentioned that his 2D game in undergoing final testing and that he is setting up a message board on his website, encouraging me to post. He also said he prefers .WAVs to mp3s as they are easier to manipulate.
His first name is Nick (but that's no secret if you've looked at his guestbook).

Marmot 4-Tay: Hold these goddamn chickens! (marmotwolof), Friday, 28 July 2006 22:28 (eighteen years ago)

Hey, that's really cool, Marmot.

About him being happy, though. I thought I read somewhere on his site him mentioning that he feels his existance is pretty bleak, and him also speculating about the (possible) light at the end of his tunnel. I can't find that part now, but I was sure I read that.

andy dale (andy dale), Friday, 28 July 2006 22:50 (eighteen years ago)

shakey your contemptuous pity for this guy is totally nauseating.

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 28 July 2006 23:02 (eighteen years ago)

Shakey's attitude in general is pretty nauseating.

Andrew (enneff), Saturday, 29 July 2006 04:59 (eighteen years ago)

Maybe I'll send him a copy of my "Folktronic" album, Bluegrass Bobcat sounds a lot to me like my Appalachia. (Although the reference to a "girl" in my lyric may well frighten him.)

He's an otaku. In Japan they've become fashionable and sexy to girls following a hit manga, novel, TV series and feature film called Densha Otoko: Train Man. He sounds like the kind of guy who should move to Japan -- for the games, the trains, and the girls. His cockpit-style living space is also very Japanese.

Momus (Momus), Saturday, 29 July 2006 08:28 (eighteen years ago)

I also think he has a promising future as a comedian, should he choose to stay in the West. He's got great material like "My Annoying Nose":

"The purpose of the nose is to smell, right? My nose doesn't seem to be able to pick up most anything besides smoke where I'm extremely sensitive to. My parents once bought chicken from KFC. They can smell the chicken from even ten feet away. I, who was holding it, couldn't smell it from even a foot away! If a dog's sense of smell was 10,000,000 units, as an example to compare, the average human would get about 2000 units (smell masters would get more around 4000 units). My nose seems to output more around 80 units, a tiny fraction that of normal. My nose, to conclude, has almost no use, but has a lot of strong negatives to simply having it."

Momus (Momus), Saturday, 29 July 2006 08:35 (eighteen years ago)

He dislikes any music with vocals.

Marmot 4-Tay: I'll sip from his well without hesitation. (marmotwolof), Saturday, 29 July 2006 08:38 (eighteen years ago)

Marmot 4-Tay: I'll sip from his well without hesitation. (marmotwolof), Saturday, 29 July 2006 08:43 (eighteen years ago)

He's an otaku.

Err, he's autistic. There is a huge difference. He's not just some socially inept nerd who keeps to himself. He is biologically lacking the ability to empathise with other human beings.

Andrew (enneff), Saturday, 29 July 2006 09:50 (eighteen years ago)

After reading "My Annoying Nose," which Momus posted, I e-mailed him about my similar problem & let him know it was called anosmia. That was really important to me when I found out. I would be reluctant to diagnose him with anything else, however.

Hey, you've got a great voice for gaming-tips narration -- reminds me of William Burroughs, but much younger sounding.

OTM, especially like where he says "bad graphics"

marmotwolof, Sunday, 5 August 2007 22:34 (seventeen years ago)

Ha, I didn't see that. I nearly mentioned Burroughs myself but thought better of it in case I showed great ignorance of American accents, not being from over there.

a passing spacecadet, Sunday, 5 August 2007 22:36 (seventeen years ago)

Nah, definite similarity, and I've listened to tons of Burroughs readings. I don't think there are any recordings of WSB from before he was already in his 40s, so if you subtract age and add a touch of nasal tone, there you go.

I would totally listen to video game podcasts from this dude.

This is the most bittersweet website.

His meat juiciness tip is surprising:

First off, this trick can ONLY be applied when you're shopping for meat. This particularly applied to a pot roast. When you go out to buy meat, look for the white stuff in the packages and feel it. When there's a lot of it and it's rather hard, the juicier it can be. There's one catch though you should be aware of [but it's rare]: it could have very little in the center, thus taking out the juice. This has worked 22 out of 23 times so far. The catch of this trick got to me, but looking at the chances of failure, it almost-always works.

Just one thing I was thinking about as I was getting on the copter (J0hn D.), Tuesday, 7 April 2009 14:37 (sixteen years ago)

He's called Nick. Maybe he'd be my friend because I'm also called Nick. Even though I fucking hate computer games and what he does with sample rates and bitrates basically makes me feel ill.

I find the fact that he so rarely mentions his family more upsetting than the fact that they might have neglected him; he's not aware of them, seemingly, at all.

Sickamous Mouthall (Scik Mouthy), Tuesday, 7 April 2009 15:27 (sixteen years ago)

The stuff about the words 'people' and 'person' is almost unbearable.

Sickamous Mouthall (Scik Mouthy), Tuesday, 7 April 2009 15:37 (sixteen years ago)

All the stuff about lava and blue water I kind of did myself for about 5 minutes when I was 8, or whatever, but I was always 100% aware that it was a mental game (as distinct from Nick's "mind game") and not actually a problem. I really feel for this guy.

Sickamous Mouthall (Scik Mouthy), Tuesday, 7 April 2009 15:52 (sixteen years ago)

I know you're being sympathetic Nick but is there anything on his site to indicate he's especially unhappy with the person he is?

Straight from the Top of My Dom (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 7 April 2009 15:56 (sixteen years ago)

Not directly, but I think there are plenty of clues that suggest he's not happy; the "no transport" section for instance. He also mentions being bullied on several occasions in a definitely negative sense. I think largely he's not aware of the person he is... but at the same time, to make that site, he clearly is also VERY aware too.

I dunno. It's difficult, obviously; I don't think sympathy is condescension.

I read a lot of his site last night. His gifs are a riot:

http://www.ulillillia.us/images/theamazingrace.gif

Unlike most animated GIFs on the web where they rarely exceed 20 frames, these animations are far longer and far more complex than most anything you'll see on the web (You should see the spreadsheets I use for the planning.). Care for an animated GIF with, say, 3000 frames? 3000 frames is near my greatest potential and the longest one here has 3444 frames (3634 if not optimized)

His Major Issues section is really sad, especially the part about both parents encouraging him to seek employment as a janitor. Right beneath that, though, I love his note about the obstacles he faces in becoming a professional accountant: "I don't know what they are or what they do"

"I don't know what an accountant is. My parents have mentioned and suggested it a few times. The skill is unknown for this reason and compatibility is neutral (which is where things naturally start) for the same reason. This same reason applies to the limitations since I don't know much about it."

Me too. His new photo is hitting that tender place even harder, too. The old photo was a dark blurry pic of a startled-eyed hairy overgrown kid crouched over a computer. The new picture is of a skinny indie-looking geek dude who looks a lot like an old friend of mine. I hope it's just the resemblance which is kicking me in the gut, and not just some kneejerk expectation that a guy who writes like this must look obviously other somehow, but... not sure.

I was hoping the vacation picture + not many updates recently meant he'd turned his life around a little, but the blog suggests things are much the same.

Sorry to double-post, but another friend of mine was a super-bright programmer but became schizophrenic. He's now largely unemployable but works on 3d graphics programming unpaid all day and all night. A very different condition, though, and my friend is lucky enough to have supportive family and govt assistance funding his place in live-in communal youth healthcare schemes which have seemed a really positive influence for him.

But this friend has a dream of having a company to round up all the IT geeks who've burnt out in one way or another and finding some kind of work scheme for them to use their skills which are being wasted now, so they can be made to feel (and be!) productive but have their mental health issues understood/supported/worked around too. A pipe dream, of course, but I just wished a little harder something like that could happen.

This novel is sheer genius. Nick Smith boldly reinvents the literary form, creating a gestalt blend of fantasy, insanity, mathematics, and narrative. Without a doubt this is the most innovative book I have ever read. A must own for anyone interested in avant-garde outsider literature.

The Legend of the 10 Elemental Masters really is a book that could only exist right now. It's the product of a mind completely overwhelmed by the statistical organization of RPGs. Pen and paper RPGs have been around for a long time, but they included a social component, because you needed to interact with friends in order to play. In contrast, the RPGs Nick was obsessed with when he was playing 10+ hours a day for a couple of decades catered to his instinct for isolation. The other big factor is that the internet has allowed him to gain any sort of audience in the first place, and to self-release his book. His audience wouldn't have been possible 20 years ago, and he probably wouldn't have been able to get his book published even 5 years ago.

thomp, Saturday, 21 November 2009 18:51 (fifteen years ago)

I wonder if he chose these numbers to such precision for a reason? like, did he specifically choose strength = 23,278,101 over, say, 23,278,000 because that extra 101 makes a discernible difference in the image he is trying to evoke, or did he just want the numbers to be statistically "random"-looking and not rounded because he thinks that's more realistic?

broski dawg (Curt1s Stephens), Saturday, 21 November 2009 18:58 (fifteen years ago)

or maybe he just created functions for each stat based on some variable like experience points and plugged in a value

broski dawg (Curt1s Stephens), Saturday, 21 November 2009 19:00 (fifteen years ago)

I spent a few minutes reading through his blog, and this kinda stuck out for me:

#10 Christmas 2008 the worst in at least a decade: Christmas is my second favorite holiday of the year, a close second; Independence Day is in first place. However, this year was one of the worst in a long time. We had company over, something extremely rare, and both parents wouldn't let me go out of my room due to a reason that's confidential. I had a solution, a blanket (which worked before), but my parents wouldn't allow it due to a supposed "rule". This ruined this year's Christmas. As a consequence, I'm now taking counter measures for what they did - not doing things they want when they tell me to. In addition, I'm not going to get them any where near as much in the way of gifts next year, and canceling any birthday gifts. I had one for my dad, but now I'm not going to get him it because he played a role with this. At least one was friendly and had sympathy, my sister. She won't be affected by the counter measures. As a consequence, I was not able to participate in the gift-opening (I was still lucky enough to get a photo), or even the family games. Instead of doing this, with nothing else for me to do otherwise, I worked on my web site update.

This is :( on so many levels.

Still, it's heartening to learn (in other blog entries) that his parents have made some effort to draw him out of his cubbyhole. he mentions stuff like helping his dad repair his roof, doing some web design at his dad's workplace, and being encouraged by his parents to major in video game design at DeVry (though he admits that this is a long shot). he could probably make some sort of living for himself if his family didn't live in some no-name Midwestern town that's 50 miles away from civilization as we know it.

or maybe he just created functions for each stat based on some variable like experience points and plugged in a value

I think that's much more likely, yep.

His taste in videogames is really unique. Stuff like Super Metroid and Super Mario World that are kind of considered universal classics get an average-to-good rating from him. Bubsy, on the other hand, a game that I don't recall anyone else talking about since the mid-90s, is pants-shitting awesome to him. And I'm pretty sure I remember reading that he claims he's listened to the level 10 music in Bubsy over ONE MILLION TIMES, and sometimes for days or weeks straight on repeat. It's safe to say he is the biggest fan of Bubsy on Earth.

Watching that video, I now realize that his character of Knuckles, from The Legend of the 10 Elemental Masters (L10EM), was probably more of a rip off of Bubsy than Sonic's Knuckles. I realize that he passionately denies the influence of Sonic at all (see the section "5: Disclaimer - the Name Knuckles" here for his argument in chart form), but he makes no mention of Bubsy, another furry character that also floats, and which he was/is completely obsessed with.

April 2011 update!

Wonder if this is a serious thing:

#5 A documentary about me!? Wow!: During the summer of 2011, a film crew (sorry, the name of the company that's doing this is classified) might be coming to make a documentary about me. Details are vague at the moment, but this is definitely a first for me. It all happened by chance too. One day, I was doing my daily check as usual and, out of nowhere, I got this E-mail and it started from that.

On the other hand, wish he'd have someone to talk to about some of this kind of stuff:

#13 A yellowish-green gelantious unknown - annoying: This has been something that's been going on for about 2 years by now and it's extremely annoying. While I'm sleeping, there's about a 10% chance each sleep-wake cycle of mine that this will happen. When it does happen, I'm otherwise forced to wake up and take care of the mess. What's the problem? I wake up to a sticky, yellowish green (hue 100°, saturation 70%, value 80%), gelatinous substance in my underwear. I've been thinking I'm piddling in my underwear, much like 1-year-olds often do (only in diapers). I have no idea why this is happening. How to stop it? That I don't know either. At least it's rare, but I would like it to stop. I don't know what's different that I'm doing that's causing this to happen.

Sam's Club. There are exactly zero warehouse clubs in Minot. Yep, zero. Little did I know that it seems that Sam's Club, despite having to pay $50 or whatever for membership, offers discounts far greater than I thought. It's not 10 cents saved, it's more like 40 cents per pizza or 80 cents per 2 pack. That's WAY more savings than I thought. Given this, I could easily make up that $50 membership in hardly a month with just one item alone. Consider one of my typical items I get: Red Baron Singles Deep Dish 2 pk as the cheese (UPC 072180 637529) and 4-cheese (UPC 072180 631046) varieties. When my sister saw that a 12-pack of these (basically 6 of the 2 packs) were only $9.98 (the 2 packs are usually $2.48). This means instead of $1.24 per pizza, it's $0.83, a 41-cent savings and to think I eat 4 of those pizzas per day, that's a huge savings.

four pizzas a day! it's true though, he will realize incredible savings with a Sam's Club membership.

Just purchased his book after reading this thread.

His recent YouTube posts of his journey to Minneapolis felt like outtakes from American Movie. I like his narrative style.

"Red Baron Singles" appear to be the American equivalent (look similar, owned by same brand) of kinda disgusting CD-sized UK single-serving microwave pizzas "Chicago Town Deep Dish" but I guess probably less disgusting for the more pizza-discerning US market

so they're probably not full-sized, but I would still like to eat 4 pizzas a day and be as skinny as Ulillillia

btw my "whoa" earlier was re him moving, but I liked him measuring his life as Before and After Equations

this guy is my favorite and I am really happy he got to move

I don't know what's more depressing, that he won't go past a mirror even if the house is on fire (and has thought about this possibility enough to write it in a list of pros/cons of moving), or that after however many years his mother still has mirrors all over the house and apparently keeps putting more up

anyway I wish him all the best in his new place, this must be a seriously big change for him and I hope it works out

So am I.

I've been a 'fan' of his for, I don't know, five years or so? I'm actually kind of worried about this, though. As rough as his home life is, I'm having a hard time imagining him being able to fend for himself out there. I guess he'll be living with his sister, but still.

His book would, I'm sure, be a great gift for any ilxors participating in any Secret Santa swap this year (I'm not).

I can't believe he's actually made it out into the world! Really, sooo happy for him!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DayNcWGMDKg

I watched this earlier, and what a treat it was. I love his voice so much, I could probably fall asleep listening to him go on about his computer hardware, how he creates his youtube videos, and other such things that no one really cares about. He sounds like, I don't know, a really, really boring, college professor or something.

At about the 15:00 minute mark of the above video, he devotes a few minutes to his penny collection (about 25,000). He goes, on and on about it of course, to the point of absurdity, even.

FUN FACT: Because he walks at an average of 3.6 mph, and most other people walk at an average of 2.8 mph, he used to get in trouble in high school because he would actually PUSH people out of his way because they walked to slow. I was extremely surprised to learn about this type of aggressive behavior of his.

Please don't take my interest in Ulillillia as something that I find as a source of amusement, or something. He fascinates me so much, because at one point in my life, I could relate to him frighteningly well.
