Come on then. Out with it.

Samantha, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Feverishly trying to write test scripts for a project handover before I leave for my holidays in an hour and a half

electric sound of jim, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm just relaxing. & you?

Gale Deslongchamps, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Well besides talking to myself I'm:

-making a country CD for Anthony

-practicing tunes on the keyboard for my garage rock band

-getting ready to go catch the last half of Hank's punk rock club night

Okay, okay so I'm not really *doing* any of those things. I'm actually listening to CDs deciding what songs to put on Anthony's, looking at my keyboard and song list setting next to me and putting off brushing my hair before I go out to see Hank.

There are you happy? I'm really only wasting my time asking "what's- on-your-nightstand?" questions on ILE.

hmph

Samantha, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i am looking thru mp3s for geoff , writing notes on a paper on pencil drawings and nude studies in 20th century art ,bitching to david , considering wanking and procrastinting on typing my fms notes . that and icqing 3 different people

anthony, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Anthony wins the multi-tasking award. If only I could get my ICQ to connect at home I'd push your limits but instead I'll just play with my organ.

Samantha, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm mostly just thinking about my friend Korin, really.

rainy, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

WORKING ON A REMIX... OF A SPACE ROCK BAND.

Brian MacDonald, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I've got two weeks to meet a major academic deadline (carried over from last November) and shouldn't be here at all. But hello everyone. I'm glad you sound happy, Samantha.

Nancy Drew, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Brian got possessed by Mike there.

I have just finished watching the Biography special on George Lucas, which I most enjoyed. I am waiting to see if a friend calls -- she's feeling down and I hope I can cheer her up. :-) Otherwise, doing some laundry and answering this question.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Finishing my extremely large banana daiquiri, listening to the Super Roots 7 mp3 that just finished downloading, taking crap from girlfriend re: time spent on computer. Mmm, daiquiri.

adam, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Just popped a zit under my chin and sterilized it with an alcohol swab, thankfully it's not very visible; told friend that "I wanna fuck a Puerto Rican girl"; just listened to first half of The W then fast forwarded to "Gravel Pit" but couldn't find energy to dance and got depressed. CUrrently wishing I could implant Ned's benevolent personality into my friends and, why not, my father. They're all bastards, basically.

Ramosi, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

My essence would probably harm more than help.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

essence of Ned = Patchouli oil? no?

chris, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm listening to pop music and plotting visits to the pub.

Tom, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oh visitS to the pub plural is it Tom? Cos all I can see is visit to the pub singular with not a word about coming out tonight to help me reacquaint myself with Mr Booze.

I am painting my nails and flicking through Metro and wondering whether to go get something to eat or to RESIST and be strong.

Emma, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Editing and designing some booklets entitled 'Separation and home finance for lone parents', listening to Gnac's 'sevens' comp and watching the rain fall down on Kentish Town Road.

Edna Welthorpe, Mrs, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yes Emma visits - co-workers going to pub this lunchtime, and fortifying pre-party drink tomorrow. Booze isn't good for you you know - and even George Best's managed to give up for more than ONE month at a time.

Tom, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

listening to Gnac's 'sevens' comp

Oh, I bought that a while ago. Boring, innit?

N., Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Being made to watch fashion tv in my dressing gown, I'm not at work today.

Ed, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hmmm as I clicked on this I was fiddling with my EAR (there is not much coming out), trying to do my hair in a manner where it looks reasonably OK instead of 'I watched Buffy and Adam and Joe last night instead of washing it', checking Ministers responses and passing them on for filing, discussing BIG BOTTLES OF WINE vs LITTLE ONES with co- worker Wendy, larffing at other co-worker who PULLED last night and now I have to write lots of names on envelopes. BOOO.

Sarah, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I am eating my lunch. Listening to the wind howl.

jel, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

And now I am gritting my teeth to avoid telling co-worker who I dislike to FCUK RIGHT OFF and STOP SLAMMING THINGS. Deep breathing exercises will be continued until I go for lunch. Somewhere out of the office.

Sarah, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I am eating a tuna baguette and marvelling at the fact that the pub will be open til seven in the morning at this years ATP. As if it wasn't messy enough last year when it shut at 5!

chris, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

right now i am being very sleepy and wondering why i am not crawling right back into bed, as i called out of work (on my second to last day no less!) i am listening to "the tired sounds of stars of the lid" very loudly, but its a very quiet disc, so it's actually not so loud. i am thinking a bagel would be good, but i am too tired to get one.

jess, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"working at home" eg listening to NAS "I am..." eating alpen and waiting for kettle to boil, *not* writing up notes on epic LoTR piece for [outlet x], *not* reading hornby best of RockCrit for FT, *not* reading BuffytVS collection of critical essays for S& S, *not* sorting thru ancient cuttings for stuff to send BarneyH at Backpages, etc etc

considering posting "Therapy: Classic or Dud" after discush w.Dr Vick last night watching the sopranos (and also various straws-in-the-wind thingZoR here), and wondering why no one has anything to contribute to my WHEN ANIMALS TRANSLATE thread — perhaps momus = korrekt after all

mark s, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Sitting in a library feeling tired and hungry and headachey.

Graham, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

oh and *not* working on my BOOK *sigh* which has apparently entirely fallen off the NEW THREADS page in my head

mark s, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I was just at the pub playing Golden Tee but now I'm back at work and it's not as much fun.

Jonnie, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

constructing lunch out of pitta breads and houmous and watercress and an avocado, drinking water (i am thirsty today). getting excited about MarkS's above-mentioned LotR epic piece, trying to ignore my boss who i think is lonely and wants someone to talk to but really can't be arsed, imagining a gin and tonic because i have decided to give up alcohol for February. well it's the shortest month innit!

katie, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Don't do it, Katie, unless unlike me you have very supportive friends who respect and value your efforts. Grrr. 5 hours & counting till booze time.

(Also February = bad month to give up booze due to the need to get mightily pissed on Valentine's Day)

Emma, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I've just realised I have had a drink for a fortnight. Tom's mention of a "cold beer" on the office thread had me drooling, and I don't even like beer.

Graham, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

reading a book, wondering how that sid vicious tribute gig is going in dunedin and wishing I was there. Also still fixated on the special box set eye stretching bargain, how I wish I had something other than the beautiful music collection ads to boast of!

Menelaus Darcy, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Youve made a drink last a fortnight Graham! Such fortitude!

Tom, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

And I made a Chupa Chups lolly last 2 and a half hours without trying the other day. Ph33r me etc.

Graham, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Now i'm going back to bed.

Graham, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

(menelaus i am placing yr order later today probably i am in a last-minute bank- transfer in time for tax crunch situation at this minute: erm i still need an address tho i guess and an idea of how much it will cost to send to NZ... basic cost = £19.99, p&p w/i UK = £5.oo, so i need whatevah on top of that, i cd try and slip it into the post-bag at work but such an action might come back and bite me)

mark s, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Mark can I read the Buffy essays? Are they online?

Sarah, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

READING THE VAMPIRE SLAYER: an unofficial critical companion to BUFFY and ANGEL, ed.Roz Kaveney, pub TAURUS/ PARKE

haha this has already featured in PSEUD'S CORNAH *and* private eye's lettahs page

hahaha TAURUS/PARKE is an anagram of UR TARKUS APE eg secretly written by p.baran i twig

mark s, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

essence of Ned = Patchouli oil? no?

Indeed, no. Ten thousand times no.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I was thinking I might pick up the Kaveney book. THere's another one due out this month (I think) also - Fighting the Forces: What's at Stake in BtVS, edited by Wilcox and Lavery, the people who do

Unintentional hilarity due to poor blue letters skilllz. Should be

the people who do Slayage, the Buffy studies journal.

Ellie, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

listening to grace ones , realizing its filthy , icqing susan , checking email , and wiating for my ride to uni

anthony, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Now I am wishing I could afford books :(

AND! Crossing my legs cos I need a wee!

Mostly being sad cos I want Buffy books. Awww.

sad me, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

graham's mention of tom's mention of a cold beer has me drooling. because i haven't had a drink since 11pm last night. this is going to be tough.

katie, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

mmmmm, the Village pub tonight, that first pint of London Pride will be lovely, don't be late number5.

chris, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

chris, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

goeff, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Trying to call this kid Justin I haven't talked to in ages, we should do something tonight. Oh and technically I am at work but fuck that shit.

Ally, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Languishing. oooeeeeoooOOoo...errrrggugghhh

Kim, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Now I am pondering what to do tonight and checking emails about every minute. Any emails? No. Chiz chiz. Sigh. Oh look another envelope for me. Is it something misdirected to me? Yep. Is it pointless? Obviously. Now I am going to read Buffy essays whilst finding out what is on TV tonight.

Sarah, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i am finished work (early 4.15 on fri, heh) and am back in Exile. On to the "endgame" world now. it's a pretty game, but puzzles are not up to Riven standard. too tired (and a bit down) for going out tonight -- in fact would be nice to be in on Fri for a change. Anyone up for Karaoke sometime next week. oh strike that, sussed is on sun week. oh karaoke sometime soon tho.

Alan Trewartha, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Pub quiz next week though Alang!

I am now FITE!ing with co-worker after I made a hair washing comment and he burst out larffing. AND NOW I really should go to the loo. I wish exact times of posting were on Greenspun as well so you could see how long my bladder lasts/how lazy I am not to be arsed to go to the ladies.

Sarah, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm just grabbing a few MP3s off Morpheus, just finished getting 'Bela Lugosi's Dead' and now I'm downloading something by Coil. Yes, I am baiting the GFG.

DG, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

What is GFG again? Goth fearing goons? Anyway, massive props for even using software that honours the fire.

N., Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

GFG = Goth Finder General.
"honour the fire" - wasn't this the Killing Joke fan salute?

DG, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Bah, foiled again. Mark S sees through my clever plan to encourage the inbuilt pretensions of Buffy fans with a whole books of poorly written and researched essays about why Willows hair & sexuality changed "How American Pie Changed Willow's Bat: When BTVS cast members external role alters their perception in the Buffyverse".

Also "Xander The Normal Guy - How BTVS Is Actually about the Geek in All Of Us" and eight other essays.

Pete, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Currently listening to the Monkees and thinking that Dan Perry wishes he were me right now. I have good reason to think this based on the appearance of a certain person just now.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I just went over to the hotel to see my sickly girlfriend, poor thing. She looked like hell.

Ally, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Am only one in office. Hanging about until stupid boss GOES THE FECK HOME else I'm stuck here till 5.45! Well ahem timesheet is till six but I will say I am going to ur, photocopy things and that I have my coat and bag cos ... I am cold? Feck it.

Sarah, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Exile finished. hmm, nice but not great.

Alan Trewartha, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Eating a banana and feeling anxious. and my neck hurts. chris rock is on the radio. he's funny.

Samantha, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

HOORAY she's gone the silly cow. Even though she hasn't signed my timesheet but I think she is WATCHING ME and I am SUSPICIOUS. I am now going home! And I shall wash my hair! For no purpose as I have no money and will probably not leave the house all w/e cos I am POOR! OR I could take a WALK round Brockwell Park hmmmm there is an idea oh well that is boring, enjoy yr banana Sam and the rest of you enjoy yer w/es AND THAT.

Ally, WASH YOUR COAT.

Sarah, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I am thinking...hmmmmm

jel, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

brockwell park is very nice. i live near there.

cameron bain, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm still thinking about my friend. I'm thinking about other people too, but mostly her. One summer we worked for two weeks at a cherry orchard, and to amuse ourselves we sang Liz Phair songs, but changed all the words that we could into 'steamed hams'.

"I bet you steam a ham too easily with the beautiful hams who are shyly steaming and you sell yourself as a ham to steam but all the steamed hams in the world are not enough..."

rainy, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

HOLDING MY PENIS.

Ally C, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ally, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I was just playing Mario Kart on my newly borrowed Super Nintendo. In ten years time I hope to move unto to the playstation.

jel, Saturday, 2 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm, um, smoking. Everybody else in the house is playing "Spy Hunter" (the new one) in the other room, but it's not my thing.

Dan I., Saturday, 2 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Giggling manically and trembling.

Maria, Saturday, 2 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I am working on producing a track. It has a rapper.

Honda, Sunday, 3 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

checking my e-mails, updating my webdiary, after being out of town for 4 days.

di, Sunday, 3 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I am working on producing a track. It has a rapper.

Why, what a coincedence! I am listening to a track. It has a rapper.

Before this, just now, I was watching the NIN DVD (grand) and the Cult video collection DVD (at once great and hilarious).

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 3 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Just fixed my e-mail, it works now. About to fall asleep to SNL I programmed my VCR to record, have a feeling it's going to suck or my machine recorded the wrong channel. One of my friends did ecstacy tonight and he was being a total fruit...a disgrace....currently contemplating what to do with insane amount of dissing material he's given me tonight...I'm a nice guy, I'll just clown him a few times this week about how pussywhipped his voice sounds when he's around girls...that's it. Goodnight.

Ramosi, Sunday, 3 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

New Spy Hunter? Details! I need details! See what happens when you give up on the games industry completely? Aiiieeee. (And just a week after I considered making myself a nice new 2d top-down Spyhunter/APB style game but then remembered that I have none of the appropriate talents. Plus I failed to work out how to get Allegro to work with VC++ MFC type gubbins.)

Rebecca, Sunday, 3 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

ally - wash your goat

goeff, Sunday, 3 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I am preparing for COMBAT on another message board.

DG, Sunday, 3 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oh, new Spyhunter is 3d and Playstation only? Bah. I return to hating all modern games then. Except probably Monkey Island IV, which I haven't bought yet (I'll probably wait until the budget re-release, though it might make my birthday hints-dropping list), but the other three rocked and the demo looks nice.

(No wonder I have no motivation to learn OpenGL properly if I hate almost all 3d games.)

What am I doing right now? I am listening to all my record fair purchases from yesterday, YAY. I bought manymanymany things for two quid each. Currently playing: Lesser - "Gearhound", which I'm not particularly getting into, but then I am slightly drunk and paying not very much attention. Highlight so far: Snow Robots vol I (damn, Lowfish rocks) and the big warm fuzzy droney bits of the Transient Waves Fatcat album (too much noodling between the fuzziness, though).

Disclaimer: am drunk, have only heard stuff once so far, and have bad taste. So don't shout at me too much if I'm very very wrong.

Rebecca, Sunday, 3 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i just came home from pulling the night shift watching a 92 year old man who refused to dtay in bed w. a broken hip.

anthony, Sunday, 3 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

You sound like you work in a John Waters film there, Anthony.

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 3 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Samantha, Monday, 1 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Is there no pasta purveyor or off-license nearby Mr Raggett? 2pm is surely late enough to get going on the comestibles front.

I'm a bit down because I just found out today that my boss is abandoning me for a promotion he couldn't pass up. I'm happy for him really, and I feel kind of bad for even being upset about this, but it's just that working for someone as cool as him is the only thing that's made my job tolerable for the past year. There must be alternatives out there. Six years in one place is too long anyway.

Kim, Monday, 1 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Six years in one place is too long anyway.

I dunno, right now I'm going on five-and-a-half. And given the weird state of economic life, I'll take the gov't job with useful benefits, thanks.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 1 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

what am i not doing would be a more appropriate question. what am i doing? perving at a cute boy who's at the computer opposite mine. surfing the net. what am i not doing? my schoolwork.

I am listening to a Tresor compilation and now, after reading this thread, about to spend my lunch hour in the Faith sale.

Anna, Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Blimey, I wish I'd seen this thread in time else I might have hit the Faith sale as well. Instead I am finishing chewing a FLAPJACK (it is healthy cos it has FROOT in it) and going to have some more LIFT LEMON TEA which I thought would be horrible but is actually FACT: top notch. It also has the desired property of waking me up, not so manically as coffee but more than yer TETLEY TEA which I shall not drink anymore in protest against their POO new advert. I am also filling in a passport application form not that I am being taken anywhere/able to afford to go anywhere off my own bat etc etc.

Sarah, Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i am listening to Geogaddi by BofC and being jealous that there is no Faith in Ilford. also i am digesting my yummy lunch of spinach, rocket and watercress salad and desperately trying to avoid my boss's eye so she won't start rabbiting on at me. also i am about to look at a "dress your own Orlando Bloom doll" website that a friend sent me.

You do know that in a couple of weeks the first result for "cannabis porn" will be greenspun.

how pray do you check what someone did NOT do?????

mark s, Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I know yohave been spending much of the afternoon trying to check if anyone apart from Emma and her fambly pronounce bagel "beigel" and the interweb has thrown up no leads. Which is not to say that no-one is out there. Just they are not interweb mentalists.

Pete, Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Pete I think that an expedition to Stanmore this weekend is in order to PROVE that the TRUE beigelmongers of north London shun the word 'bagel'.

Emma, Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

the only people i know who pronounce bagel "beigel" are ALL THE JEWISH PEOPLE I HAVE EVER MET Pete!

katie, Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Katie is korrekt. Them whelks have obv messed w/yr head Pete.

RickyT, Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

could you clarify the pronounciation of "beigel". I;ve never heard anything other than bay-gul (nemesis of the mighty naz-gul). and i'm welsh, which is practically jewish.

Alan Trewartha, Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I am not clear on what you are saying. Do mean they say beigel as in the colour beige with an l on the end (ie. like everyone else but with a soft g?)

N., Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Denis Lawson said it like that (bi-gal) on the programme he did with crime traveller David Wicks. I think it's correct and I should know because I'm a Spurs fan.

Jonnie, Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Bi-gal justs sounds barrow boy.

N., Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I am also perplexed. I'm having nightmares of going into a bagel shop in the UK and watching people smear cream cheese on Snoopy before taking a nibble...

Dan Perry, Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Well us north London Jews are just a bunch of barrow boys 'n' gals at heart Nick. Bi-gal it is SO THERE PETER BARAN. Num num num. Rollmops mmm.

Emma, Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Taking sides: Bi-gal vs Beagle?

Dan Perry, Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Well BIGALS are nicer with smoked salmon and beagles nick your fags. So BIGALS it is.

Emma, Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

(lesbiang!!!)

ha ha so funny NOT, Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm having nightmares of going into a bagel shop in the UK

And rightly too, as they're nearly all rubbish. Don't give me that Brick Land cobblers -- only people that live in strange parts of town think Brick Lane is at all convenient.

Alan Trewartha, Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i'm welsh, which is practically jewish
Alan has also claimed to be geordie and cornish in his time. It's like Alexei Sayle, who has said that he's Russian and Latvian. 'Cept we don't love to hear Alan swear on the tv hee hee. What about PRETZEL then? In Germany it's Bretzen. The substitution of one vowel sound in German with another in Yiddish is quite commonplace, e.g. the 1940s song "Bei Mir Bist Du Shane" cf "schön" auf Deutsch.

MarkH, Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I fail to see how Pete can possibly have assumed that people would understand that 'beigel' = 'bi-gal'. But somehow Katie and RickyT did. It's a mystery. I'm really confused here.

N., Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

You look it up on the interweb then. Ever ever online dictionary and source has the a pronounced as in way - so much so it is used as guide to pronouncing Hegel.

As Mr S sez - its awful hard trying to disprove something via the interweb. That said the barrow-boy theory would hold some routes what with Emma's Jewish fambly being from Stokey.

Pete, Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

If you are replying to me here Pete then what I mean is I don't understand how by writing "Emma thinks it is pronounced 'beigel'" we would realise that you meant 'bi-gal'. I mean 'beigel' is hardly international phonetics alphabet calibre as explanations go.

n., Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Clearly it is not just Pete I am going to have to take on a fact finding expedition to Stanmore. I don't know exactly where my auntie gets her beigels from but it is somewhere in the Stanmore / Edgware region and they are bloody lovely so there to all you haterz saying you can't get nice beigels in London. Us Jewish people scoff them all before you gentiles can get to them ha ha.

And Pete only my mum & auntie are from Stamford Hill. The rest come from all over the proverbial shop.

Emma, Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i don't think i claimed to be cornish did I? my name is, and my dad's family are from that-a-ways, but my middle name is welsh, cos i was born there, and i grew up somewhere within spitting dist of the Metro Centre, hence vague (utterly fake) sense of geordieness. like. man. whey, and if you will, aye.

Alan Trewartha, Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

katie and rickyT understood it cos they haf heard the Jewish ppl of their acquaintances pronouncing it as such! tis no mystery.

katie, Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

the bakers shop, we assume.

MarkH, Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Still 'tis mystery, katie, cause why did you not ask for clarification of the way Pete meant it. Just because you have heard an unusual Jewish pronounciation does not mean Emma was saying it the same way. I maintain that 'beigel' highly ambiguous as a phonetic guide and that 'bi-gal' is the last thing I would have guessed.

Anyway, to move on, did you know that Indian people laugh at you when you say 'bar-jee'. It's actually 'badge-yah'. Or so my dad says.

N., Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

and it's do-ri-toss, not doh-ree-toes. fact

Alan Trewartha, Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

No Nick, do notbe so arrogant as to presume that just because my post was after yours that I was replying to you (actually arrogance aside it was a simultaneous posting thing). I wrote beigel - which I'll agree is hardly helpful under the circumstances - as that is what Emma always writes. That said Bigel suggests it rhymes with Nigel - substitution the hard G for a soft G so I see the aesthetic problem there.

However if you google the spelling beigel you get nowt in the way of boiled bread products. Yet where else is "ba" pronounced "bi" (and before you go all Yiddish on me all the online Yiddish pronunciations also stick with "bay-gul"). So I am intriguiged to chase up this Stanmore based anomoly.

Pete, Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Or, to get back to the original question, I am thinking about this thread and wondering why I found it so easy to come up with so many examples so quickly and what that says about my approach to music and also my head.

N., Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I maintain that 'beigel' highly ambiguous as a phonetic guide and that 'bi-gal' is the last thing I would have guessed.

Even I who pronounces everything as if it was written in German missed this one. I am very upset about this, because it allowed Emma to make the joke about munching on a salmon-covered bi-girl before I could.

Dan Perry, Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It is NOT an anomaly Baran! Grrr. BIGUL BYGUL BIGAL BIGEL BEIGEL you bastards.

Emma, Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Well then I maintain that your original post was unhelpful.

As it happens 'beigel' as a spelling is not that rare. Only yesterday I referred to the vile 'Happening Beigel Bakery' of Finsbury Park. If you search for 'beigels' rather than 'beigel' on Google you will lots of boiled bread at the top as the people with the surname get bumped. This could be the root of my confusion - I didn't think it that odd when you wrote 'beigel'. I just assumed that was another way of spelling 'bay-gul'.

N., Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

My new mission in life is to spread the PROPER LONDONISH pronunciation around London since you are all getting it so terribly wrong.

Emma, Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

And as you pointed out the bei is pronounce bay in words like beige. Hence the source of your confusion.

See what you miss when we are away?

Pete, Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Um, sorry for writing bi-gal. That was the closest to how I think it's pronounced, that's all.

Jonnie, Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

When in fact is 'bei' ever pronounced 'bi'?

N., Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

In bagel.

Jonnie, Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Look Matey we are the Secret Rulers of the World so I think it is US who dictate how words are pronounced.

Emma, Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It is a sad day when the US decides how words shall be pronounced outside their own country. (or for that matter the characters in The Secret Life Of Us).

Pete, Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm not going to let no lizard be the boss of me.

N., Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

As a SROTW in training I also reserve the right to use US instead of WE to cause extra confusion.

Who are you calling a lizard Dastoor?

Emma, Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Just popping out for a quick US.

Pete, Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

SROTW = 12' lizards, innit? Like that Sean Price

RickyT, Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I am MULTI-TASKING between a report on Google and Civ III (guess which task is getting more attention), and have just logged on. Sarah, Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

[it is a relief to know this whole curfuffle can be attributed to Emma's raw London edge].

Could an American Jewish ILE-er confirm this is the case?

N., Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

First generation Londoners = dead well over two thousand years ago!

N. is older than we imagine. Or his mummy is a Mummy.

Pete, Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

SHUT UP.

Does London have an equivalent of Romulus and Remus? If so they weren't my mum and dad anyway. One cam from the Midlands and the other from Bombay.

and, as predicted by various friends, getting over-acquainted with the food channel.

I watch the reflection of the ceiling fan in the window. I can see cars on the road behind me. I've been watching a spider, I'm hoping that it is okay, I disturbed its home when I moved a box. I am currently connected at only 115200 bps, that is the slowest modem speed ever. I'm going to look through a collection of independent inquiry reports that have just been donated to the library, then I'm going outside to walk around in the sunshine. The spider is still there, I can also see a dead fly, maybe the spider will eat it and not starve. I can hear aeroplanes taking off, and a printer printing.

I'm waiting for a dumb Site Based Management Team meeting in which we have to sign off on the school budget for next year. I feel particulary uninspired for this since apparantly one-third of our faculty is due to be deployed next week and we don't know who yet. Guess who's at the bottom of the totem pole?

(btw, teachers aren't being sent to Iraq, just being 'released' due to huge budget cuts.)

Trying to sort out our March cost of goods sold.
Wishing I weren't so loathsome.
I just took a bunch of pictures and I can't get them up onto my site so I'm bummed about that (not that anyone in their right mind would want to look at them anyway!).
I multitask.

I multitask too. Thus, I appear to be on ILX all day, but I am actually working at the same time.

I want to see your pix, Bryan.

Sarah McLUsky (coco), Thursday, 3 April 2003 19:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I have 27 pics for offer today. They make some sense, but maybe not. Until I can post them online they'd be a 1.1 MB email attachment (zipped). They might cause drowsiness as well!

(Martin S - wot's "a line of sed"? as for y my name looks that way on the interweb, 't must be due to some software weirdness or something; this's actually how i print it in:
t>'postrophe>'postrophe>t - i do not insert any slashes, some-thing else does that :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 4 April 2003 23:25 (twenty-two years ago)

t\'\'t, sed is used for searching for and changing text in files. From memory if I wanted to change MARTIN to Martin throughout a file I might write something like s\MARTIN\martin\g. It gets a lot more complicated, but you'll see the pattern looks similar.
