DONATE now to SAVE ILX! (Keep bumping this thread pls)

As you might know, the future of ILX's hosting is in doubt. It's not certain, but we might have to find a new host for the servers, and a free one looks increasingly unlikely. Hosting will cost roughly $1200 a year, and a campaign has started to raise the cash.

You can:

  • DONATE to the campaign

  • Read more about the problems with hosting

  • Help out with an effort to get the ILX code into shape
  • If we are allowed to stay on the current host, all donations will be refunded, but if we're thrown off, it'll be too late to campaign. We already have enough for one month's hosting!

    $1200, that's only €938 or £634 !

I'm an idiot. How does Paypal work? I'm getting a debit card in a while; can i use that on Paypal?

Tape Store (Tape Store), Thursday, 10 August 2006 21:42 (eighteen years ago)

you can set up paypal to draw from the bank account you have your debit card linked to.

Also, when you click the contribute button there's a page you can put the card details into. You don't need to open a Paypal account if you don't want to.

stet (stet), Thursday, 10 August 2006 21:44 (eighteen years ago)

PayPal's help/FAQ page. I've used it for years now and never had a problem.

stet, for ease of mind, can you reassure people exactly HOW you'll get their money back to them if it's not needed?

(hint: tell them it *is* needed, then we'll go and paint Glasgow red with teh profits of your "scam")

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Thursday, 10 August 2006 22:30 (eighteen years ago)

Sod it. I've donated what I can.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Thursday, 10 August 2006 22:33 (eighteen years ago)

OK, I've chipped in a bit. During the last fund drive, I was brand new to ILX and not sure I was going to hang around, so I didn't put any in the kitty...glad to chip in this time around.

Whitman Mayonnaise (Rock Hardy), Thursday, 10 August 2006 23:02 (eighteen years ago)

I've donated a wee bit. I'll give more later in the month when I get paid again.

ailsa (ailsa), Thursday, 10 August 2006 23:19 (eighteen years ago)

(and I know where he lives, and also his girlfriend, so can kick his, erm, midriff in if he fails to do useful stuff with the cash. I'd kick his head in, but it's a bit high up)

ailsa (ailsa), Thursday, 10 August 2006 23:21 (eighteen years ago)

Great going everyone! 18 donors so far. Every bit helps so thank you all! I've also been contacted by people who want to stay anonymous, their figures won't show up on the donation page yet.

I can't handle US cheques here, but I don't mind doing UK cheques. If anyone wants to turn cheques into paypal gold let me know and I'll pass details on.

Ailsa: Refunds will come straight from PayPal -- there's a 60 day limit on doing that, but we'll know for sure well before then. xpost: oh god, make sure I've put the money somewhere safe before that evil drink comes out.

While I don't think stet is trying to scam anyone here, I'm just saying for the record that I do not specifically endorse this fundraiser.

Andrew (enneff), Thursday, 10 August 2006 23:35 (eighteen years ago)

Why not, Andrew? Is there a better way?

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Thursday, 10 August 2006 23:41 (eighteen years ago)

It's not that there's a better way, per se, merely that I don't know stet personally and cannot vouch for his trustworthiness. This does not mean that he is untrustworthy. I am just trying to limit my own personal liability in the remote possibility that this all goes pearshaped.

Andrew (enneff), Thursday, 10 August 2006 23:49 (eighteen years ago)

Quite understood, Andrew -- I will vouch for stet; I met him at the same time I met many of the Glasgow ILXors and he's a solid guy. Ailsa and the rest of the Glaswegians can doubtless vouch for him too.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 10 August 2006 23:54 (eighteen years ago)

I'm paranoid it will all be spent on Buckfast and deep fried Mars bars now.

chap who would dare to start Raaatpackin (chap), Friday, 11 August 2006 00:45 (eighteen years ago)

    Oh, and Celtic tattoos.

chap who would dare to start Raaatpackin (chap), Friday, 11 August 2006 00:48 (eighteen years ago)

    :)

Seriously though guys: no buckfast or mars bars. If it makes anyone feel more comfortable to know, I'm going out with Madchen, I work with Alba and Grimly Fiendish and I'm known to most of Glasgow ILX and a lot of London too. I couldn't abscond with the cash without leaving my lass, my job and the country.

It's going great guns! Some incredible donations! We're halfway there to a year of ILX goodness and poxy fuling!

stet (stet), Friday, 11 August 2006 00:55 (eighteen years ago)

You could get a few Celtic tattoos, even so. Come on.

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Friday, 11 August 2006 00:56 (eighteen years ago)

I think Madchen's your protection against that fear. Spending it on new shoes, however ...

aw! just glad to be of service to a fellow ILX0r. especially because i took the piss out of your old iTunes to begin with :)

i'm also contractually obliged to take the piss out of stet at every turn, but here i'm actually going to put my trucker serious hat on and say that he is one of the most decent and upstanding people i've met in my 31 years on this sorry planet; a true and loyal friend ... and someone i'd pretty much trust with my life, to be frank.

not that my word counts for much in the general scheme of things. but either way, i can't vouch for his credentials and decency enough.

beanz, if you want you can donate to the "buy grimly an alfa romeo brera fund" instead. current donations: $0.00. if i can get 27 grand by the end of the day, i'll give you a spin round the block in it. you can even change gear if you like :)

seriously: fucking hell, respect to stet and to ILX as a whole. coo ur. i've been off line for a few days and missed a lot of the original discussion; still, whatever the future holds, i'm pretty optimistic about the "community" surviving. hey, it's bigger than just the board, you guys. or something.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Friday, 11 August 2006 08:44 (eighteen years ago)

StanM (StanM), Friday, 11 August 2006 08:52 (eighteen years ago)

the cost is all-in, from what i can work out. if i'm understanding this correctly, what we're paying for - or at least provisionally paying for - is the server space and the bandwidth.

now all we need is SHINY NEW CODE to make it all work properly. i can make the tea, i suppose.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Friday, 11 August 2006 08:56 (eighteen years ago)

Do not stop, everyone! The more we can afford every month, the betterbiggerfaster the server we can hire! (right?)

StanM (StanM), Friday, 11 August 2006 09:01 (eighteen years ago)

OK everyone, that was incredible! Well done!

We're going to need a discussion in a couple of days about how best to actually use this cash -- firstly, Andrew can't release the ilx server until December, and we'd need to buy out his share of it, so we're going to need a computer as well as the hosting.

I've had approaches about a donation of hardware, and I've asked some hosting sites for quotes on leasing a server, including one who've offered us a deal rate, so when I get all those back I'll post here for your discussion.

Either way, this war chest makes ilx safe for a good while yet. It's incredible what a load of you can do, pulling together. 11 hours! FFS!

(If anyone desperately wants to still give cash to the kitty, get in touch. Likewise if you have hosting contacts, or think you might be able to help out with a server. I'm bonaldi at gmail)

stet (stet), Friday, 11 August 2006 09:05 (eighteen years ago)

Oops xposts: Yes, we still need some sort of server. Andrew bought the current boxes with help from ILX, and they're stuck in Melbourne until December at least.

This drive figure of $1200 was purely for hosting, but there are colos who are quoting figures of around $120 a month to lease a server of slightly better spec than the current one, so we're more or less there either way.
