THE EMMYS

they're happening this evening, in my hood -- just down the way at the shrine auditorium. streets closed off, helicopters circling overhead, limos and equipment trucks duking it out with the other traffic. i should be out celebrity-gawking, but i have tons of reading to catch up on.

el borracho (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 27 August 2006 22:12 (nineteen years ago)

EEEEE TIM GUNN

mts (theoreticalgirl), Sunday, 27 August 2006 22:15 (nineteen years ago)

the sad thing is, i'm tv-less right now so the play-by-play will be meaningless to me.

el borracho (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 27 August 2006 22:16 (nineteen years ago)

Ooh, I didn't realize that was tonight. Count me in for some catty play-by-play.

Marmot (marmotwolof), Sunday, 27 August 2006 22:28 (nineteen years ago)

prince is doin a 2 hr set tonight at some party. im guna try n get in ala turtle on entourage.

chaki (chaki), Sunday, 27 August 2006 22:32 (nineteen years ago)

my, he's everywhere these days.

el borracho (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 27 August 2006 22:34 (nineteen years ago)

tim gunn is being sorely underused on the NBC broadcast.

mts (theoreticalgirl), Sunday, 27 August 2006 22:53 (nineteen years ago)

This opening is pretty sweet.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Sunday, 27 August 2006 23:05 (nineteen years ago)

yes, that was a good opener!

mts (theoreticalgirl), Sunday, 27 August 2006 23:07 (nineteen years ago)

julia louise-dreyfus looks like she's wearing a gun holster with her dress.

mts (theoreticalgirl), Sunday, 27 August 2006 23:18 (nineteen years ago)

that sounds hot

chaki (chaki), Sunday, 27 August 2006 23:21 (nineteen years ago)

Will Arnett's smirking on camera was pretty funny.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Sunday, 27 August 2006 23:32 (nineteen years ago)

Shit, guess I'm out of the play-by-play. They're not playing it live over here.

Marmot (marmotwolof), Sunday, 27 August 2006 23:37 (nineteen years ago)

I'd like to see a Dennis Haysbert/James Earl Jones voiceover showdown.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Sunday, 27 August 2006 23:38 (nineteen years ago)

barry manilow just beat out stephen colbert. something is totally wrong with america.

mts (theoreticalgirl), Monday, 28 August 2006 00:13 (nineteen years ago)

There's already been way too much Manilow and not enough Kareem Abdul Jabbar.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Monday, 28 August 2006 00:15 (nineteen years ago)

also, more bob newhart. they need a newhartometer in the corner of the screen!

mts (theoreticalgirl), Monday, 28 August 2006 00:17 (nineteen years ago)

This Aaron Spelling tribute is just a wee bit over the top.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Monday, 28 August 2006 01:00 (nineteen years ago)

lol at Colbert. Last laugh.

Haikunym (Haikunym), Monday, 28 August 2006 01:13 (nineteen years ago)

Will Arnett's smirking on camera was pretty funny.

Am sad I missed this. And NOTHING ELSE.

captain reverend gandalf jesus (nickalicious), Monday, 28 August 2006 01:17 (nineteen years ago)

my friend won a technical emmy last week! big :)

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 28 August 2006 04:05 (nineteen years ago)

where is allyzay with her emmy fashion roundup?

personally, all that aubergine was boring the hell out of me. poor tim didnt have much to comment on. the only dresses i really liked were edie falco's and, my favorite, helen mirran's (!!) white dress. oh and someone from the office crew was wearing a nice silver number too.

also: holy shit, Jaclyn Smith looked GOOD!

sunny successor (katharine), Monday, 28 August 2006 12:01 (nineteen years ago)

hellz yeah, especially compared to surgery victim kate "murcury" jackson and everything victim farrah

Haikunym (Haikunym), Monday, 28 August 2006 13:03 (nineteen years ago)

re: kate jackson's surgery - the lifetime channel probably made her do it.

farrah is a great name, no?

Evangeline Lily = HAWTTT

Young Fresh Danny D (Dan Perry), Monday, 28 August 2006 13:51 (nineteen years ago)

sunny successor (katharine), Monday, 28 August 2006 14:10 (nineteen years ago)

Katherine Heigl! (Unfortunately she had sweat patches under her boobs, which were not really glamorous but were, at the end of the day, also HAWTTT.)

Young Fresh Danny D (Dan Perry), Monday, 28 August 2006 14:14 (nineteen years ago)

boob sweat. nice!

im assuming shes in some kind of medical/cop/courtroom drama because ive never seen her before

sunny successor (katharine), Monday, 28 August 2006 14:16 (nineteen years ago)

She's on "Grey's Anatomy". She is fucking awesome. And she is HAWTTT.

Young Fresh Danny D (Dan Perry), Monday, 28 August 2006 14:19 (nineteen years ago)

eva longoria's dress looked like the bastard child of laura and angela's project runway designs:

http://img163.imageshack.us/img163/1108/emmys06g4vz0.jpg

sunny successor (katharine), Monday, 28 August 2006 14:20 (nineteen years ago)

I thought Piven was the star of Entourage? He won Best Supporting Actor? (NB: I have never seen the show.)

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 28 August 2006 14:21 (nineteen years ago)

Oh Eva.

When was the last time Tyra looked that good??????? Wow.

Young Fresh Danny D (Dan Perry), Monday, 28 August 2006 14:21 (nineteen years ago)

(NB: I have never seen the show.)

I haven't either and I know Piven isn't the star! He plays the star's agent.

Young Fresh Danny D (Dan Perry), Monday, 28 August 2006 14:23 (nineteen years ago)

But I thought it was a show about agents! (Who's the star?)

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 28 August 2006 14:24 (nineteen years ago)

maybe entourage is classified as an 'ensemble cast'.

Or maybe he had a better chance of winning in that category.

sunny successor (katharine), Monday, 28 August 2006 14:25 (nineteen years ago)

The show is about a young gun Hollywood actor loosely modelled on Mark Wahlberg and his hometown buddies who moved out to LA to hang out with him as his career takes off.

Young Fresh Danny D (Dan Perry), Monday, 28 August 2006 14:27 (nineteen years ago)

Watching the Emmys when you hardly watch TV can be kind of amusing. I spent a good portion of the telecast being all, "What, Jean Smart has actually done something since Designing Women?"

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 28 August 2006 14:28 (nineteen years ago)

Dude, she basically owned "24" this year!

Young Fresh Danny D (Dan Perry), Monday, 28 August 2006 14:29 (nineteen years ago)

(TV makes up far too much of my life.)

Young Fresh Danny D (Dan Perry), Monday, 28 August 2006 14:29 (nineteen years ago)

i had a lot of 'wait, which show is whatsher/hisname on now?' moments and i watch tv all the time. it seemed like half the people there had cancelled shows.

sunny successor (katharine), Monday, 28 August 2006 14:30 (nineteen years ago)

and what was the deal with 'lost'? did they get frozen out or something? they did have a season last year, right?

sunny successor (katharine), Monday, 28 August 2006 14:30 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, they got a couple writing and directing nominations, but the only acting nod was for Henry Ian Cusick (Desmond), and they weren't even nominated for Best Drama.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 28 August 2006 14:33 (nineteen years ago)

They changed the nomination process and, as a result, "Lost" and Gandolfini/Falco didn't get nominated. (Meanwhile, the admittedly awesome Ellen Burstyn was nominated for a movie role where they literally played half of her total screen time during the summary clips they were playing for the nominees. We're talking less screen time than Judi Dench in "Shakespeare In Love" here.)

Young Fresh Danny D (Dan Perry), Monday, 28 August 2006 14:34 (nineteen years ago)

OMG I hate how hot Katherine Heigl is because she looks almost exactly like my little sister.

captain reverend gandalf jesus (nickalicious), Monday, 28 August 2006 14:37 (nineteen years ago)

(You're in Kentucky, right?)

Young Fresh Danny D (Dan Perry), Monday, 28 August 2006 14:38 (nineteen years ago)

hi please have your sister call me

also, what was the change in the nomination process, specifically?

kyle (akmonday), Monday, 28 August 2006 14:41 (nineteen years ago)

I don't know the specific change! I just know there has been bitching about it in Hollywood.

me = FONT OF USELESS, INCOMPLETE INFORMATION

Young Fresh Danny D (Dan Perry), Monday, 28 August 2006 14:42 (nineteen years ago)

There was a nip slip onstage when The Office won. Just so everyone knows. :D

kyle (akmonday), Monday, 28 August 2006 21:34 (nineteen years ago)

It appears that not only did the dress come down, they managed to get the STRAPLESS BRA off as well (although as all of us ladies know that is not actually a challenge). Thanks Jenna!

Jessie the Monster (scarymonsterrr), Monday, 28 August 2006 21:36 (nineteen years ago)

I was hoping it would be ANGELA.

captain reverend gandalf jesus (nickalicious), Monday, 28 August 2006 21:37 (nineteen years ago)

interesting.

Eric H., Monday, 17 September 2007 02:44 (eighteen years ago)

i was only half paying attn what was she saying?

tehresa, Monday, 17 September 2007 02:44 (eighteen years ago)

She dedicated her award to mothers who are being forced to wait for their children to come home ... then she lost her place and got really confused ... then she sounded like she dedicated the award "to war" ... then she said something that got censored ... then it cut to a wide shot as she walked away to applause and what sounded to my ears like some fierce booing ... then we were expected to be silent for the "in memorium" segment.

Eric H., Monday, 17 September 2007 02:46 (eighteen years ago)

All in all, I guess I wouldn't be surprised if it just turned out she accidentally swore. She was getting really flustered about finishing her speech and appeared to be racing the countdown.

Eric H., Monday, 17 September 2007 02:47 (eighteen years ago)

i thought she was going to say if it were up to mothers there wouldn't be war or kids wouldn't die in war or something

tehresa, Monday, 17 September 2007 02:49 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, I think that was what she was gearing up to say. We'll find out soon enough.

Eric H., Monday, 17 September 2007 02:56 (eighteen years ago)

Someone on another message board seemed to think he heard her utter a "goddamn" or something.

Eric H., Monday, 17 September 2007 02:58 (eighteen years ago)

Google Blog search brought up this (mattmarksmusic.blogspot.com, I think?):
Ever the controversial figure (um... not really), Sally Field was apparently censored by Fox just a few minutes ago for speaking out against the war. She was pretty tongue-tied in her acceptance speech and was babbling somewhat incoherently about "war" when she suddenly said something to the effect of "we all know that if women ruled the world there would be no godda..." and Fox awkwardly cut audio and switched camera angles to one above the auditorium. So... what else can you deduce but that Fox cut her speech for mentioning the war? Possibly they will go with the cover story that it was because of her attempted "goddamn". But we'll see if this becomes a story or not. Maybe that's why I'm writing on it. Do I care if Sally Field is censored? Probably. She did scare the shit out of me as a kid in Sybil...

Tape Store, Monday, 17 September 2007 03:09 (eighteen years ago)

at least tina finally got some love

tehresa, Monday, 17 September 2007 03:14 (eighteen years ago)

My favorite censorship moment was Katherine Heigl:

"And the winner is... Katherine Heigl!"
"Shit!"
*censor*

lolololololol

HI DERE, Monday, 17 September 2007 03:18 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, it's like they thought she had a lav mic on or something.

Eric H., Monday, 17 September 2007 03:21 (eighteen years ago)

And Tina gets a lot of love. Almost as much as she deserves, even.

Eric H., Monday, 17 September 2007 03:22 (eighteen years ago)

My "yes, I am really gay" reminder award goes to Elaine Stritch for being teh rofflez.

Eric H., Monday, 17 September 2007 03:24 (eighteen years ago)

i thought she was going to say if it were up to mothers there wouldn't be war or kids wouldn't die in war or something

This sounds really plausible if one doesn't actually talk to real American mothers about politics. You get some of the most simple-minded sloganeering and media talking-point repetition you'll ever hear (regardless their viewpoint) when you listen to them talk about current events. For every one wise old woman who knows more about the human condition than all of Washington there are one-hundred Cindy Sheehans. Utter nonsense from Field.

Cunga, Monday, 17 September 2007 04:37 (eighteen years ago)

Deep political insights, straight from america's teenagers. Give him a hand, everybody.

kingfish, Monday, 17 September 2007 04:42 (eighteen years ago)

Oh, and of course no kids would die in wars if mothers ran things. No American kids would die, but the nukes would've hit "the Middle East"/"Arab Country Intl" at about 1PM Eastern time Sept 11th, 2001. That would've taken care of this whole mess without sacrificing one American life!

Cunga, Monday, 17 September 2007 04:42 (eighteen years ago)

Envy my youth all you want, Kingfish. No excuse me while I go watch more MTV and pay absolutely no consequences for whatever actions I take.

wtf? Sally Field wasn't censored at all on the broadcast we saw. she started out coherent, babbled awkwardly, then did (finally) say something very close to "if mothers ran the world, there wouldn't be any goddamn wars!"

... but all is forgiven for them getting "Flight of the Conchords" and Sarah Silverman (fuck the haters) in there along with it.

+ no Piven means Neil Patrick Harris will sail to an easy win!

That is so wrong on so many levels.

Detroit Metal City (Nicole), Thursday, 16 July 2009 13:19 (sixteen years ago)

I'm not saying The Simpsons has deserved a nod in the last 15 years or anything, but when it was in its prime, yes. And Family Guy's occasional willingness to hump an unfunny joke for minutes on end until it becomes funny can't make up for its lazy over-reliance on standard-issue race/sex/orientation punchlines delivered in "haha, laugh because you know we really don't believe this is funny" mode.

sir-mounter (Eric H.), Thursday, 16 July 2009 13:43 (sixteen years ago)

which one?

sir-mounter (Eric H.), Thursday, 16 July 2009 13:43 (sixteen years ago)

It should be noted that there are a whopping seven nominees in the Best Comedy and Best Drama categories this year (and six nominees in all of the acting categories) -- maybe that's how Family Guy slipped in?

Ted Lasso (which is not a comedy)

I mean, it's definitely more of a comedy than a drama.

Can't believe Elizabeth Olsen got nothing! And as much as I loved Succession, this category is depressing:

F. Murray Abraham, "The White Lotus"

Nicholas Braun, "Succession"

Michael Imperioli, "The White Lotus"

Theo James, "The White Lotus"

Matthew Macfadyen, "Succession"

Alan Ruck, "Succession"

Will Sharpe, "The White Lotus"

Alexander Skarsgård, "Succession"

symsymsym, Wednesday, 12 July 2023 17:32 (two years ago)

lol, was just gonna post that list of the only two dramatic shows that feature any supporting actors. Who knew?

Kinda stunned that pretty much all of the nominations I would've selected from shows that I've seen are present and accounted for (although I would've given Shrinking a best comedy series nod and maybe toss Harrison Ford a bone, as well).

Why Rashomoff? Rashomon! (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 12 July 2023 17:36 (two years ago)

I doubt many people agree with me that Big Mouth is the best thing on TV/streaming right now, but the 88th season of The Simpsons getting a nomination instead of it just proves that the Emmys give as much care to their Animation categories as the Oscars do.

niall horanburger (cryptosicko), Wednesday, 12 July 2023 17:40 (two years ago)

It feels increasingly clear that the more content there is, the more voters are just going to go all-in on three or four shows. I think at this point The White Lotus has 17 acting nominations ... from a grand total of two seasons.

fair but so uncool beliefs here (Eric H.), Wednesday, 12 July 2023 17:50 (two years ago)

Definitely glad they passed on Ford and instead nominated Williams and Segal (who I normally can't stand but is indeed quite good in Shrinking).

Lead actress in a comedy is definitely the acting category that has very little to do with my take on quality (Brunson aside):

Christina Applegate - Dead to Me as Jen Harding
Rachel Brosnahan - The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel as Miriam "Midge" Maisel
Quinta Brunson - Abbott Elementary as Janine Teagues
Natasha Lyonne - Poker Face as Charlie Cale
Jenna Ortega - Wednesday as Wednesday Addams

fair but so uncool beliefs here (Eric H.), Wednesday, 12 July 2023 17:55 (two years ago)

Richard Lawson recently argued that today's awards-bait non-comedic comedies are either descendants of The Office ("smarmy coziness" cf. Ted Lasso) or of Louie (auterist genre experimentation cf. Barry).

jaymc, Wednesday, 12 July 2023 23:07 (two years ago)

Ted Lasso is very sentimental and cozy, and is definitely mostly a comedy. The LA Times trashed it and Juno Temple's nomination:

https://www.latimes.com/entertainment-arts/tv/story/2023-07-12/emmy-award-nominations-snubs-surprises

...but I kind of liked the third season, I thought it really extended itself and took a lot more chances than it did in the second season

was glad Phil Dunster finally got nominated

Agreed Big Mouth is better than both the latest season of The Simpsons (yawn) and also better than Bob’s Burgers (which I like and am glad for it, but).

That said, my big complaint with the Emmys is the boring inertia of the nominations. Once a show is nominated, it likely will be nominated every season hence (see: Mrs Maisel, Ted Lasso, Elizabeth Moss for Handmaid’s Tale…). So in that regard I’m shocked Big Mouth wasn’t nominated because it has been for most of its other seasons!

Not sure if this is the right thread but I couldn't find it elsewhere and wow this sounds insane - you can't be nominated as team member for a Sports Emmy for a program if you're already nominated for your specific role, so ESPN were making up Bobson Dugnutt names for the team (as 'Associate producer') and getting them re-engraved for the talent.
