with the olden thread being complicated to find and all...

Growing, Color Wheel (is rather good)
The New Folk Sound of Terry Callier
The Bosshoss, Rodeo Radio (well there are much worse experiences in this life than to've listened to *both* Bosshoss records, but...)
Arvo Pärt, Fratres (and actually five more compositions from 1977-88), performed by Tasmin Little (vln), Martin Roscoe (pno), Robert Aldwinckle (prep.piano), Bournemouth Sinfonietta/ Richard Studt (dir.& vln.)

My surprise Record of the Year is White Bicycles - Making Music in the 1960s - The Joe Boyd Story by Various Artists. I wonder if the book is as good as the record. Sandy Denny sounds so much better when surrounded by things other than 84 more Sandy Denny tracks.

Samuel Vriezen's 'Terug!' for ensemble is a beautiful piece. His 'Toccattas' sound ok and I'm working through this piece for string quartet and (sounds like v lightly amplified) guitar. I know of his performance - just released - of Tom Johnson's 'Symmetries' that will def be chased up.

Merzbow 'Ab Hunter' - Terrific 15 mins of ear bleedin' etc etc but also plenty of bubbly sounds to sweeten it up.

David Toop (et al), Hot Pants Idol

Yesterday 'noon I went to listen to Toop's live-reading-from-Haunted-Weather(mainly)-with-mixing-music-to-go-with-it... I'd had very scant sleep the night before, so most of the approx. 50 minute reading I was mainly sorta slipping into half-sleep and then again sliding outta-into semi-awakedness, and time and again worrying about falling really asleep - and outta my chair too, with a bang and wimper, huh (which didn't happen, tho :) -- but for the most part I enjoyed my own private drea'm'ovie, which Toop's softly told stories and the unintrusive music were just (two) part(s) of.

KELIS WAS HERE.

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Monday, 11 September 2006 20:39 (nineteen years ago)

Yes, I have the following (in one for or another):

La Lupe - Reina de la Cancion Latina/Queen of Latin Soul (1968)
La Lupe - Two Sides of La Lupe - Dos Lados de La Lupe (1968)
Mongo Santamaria Mongo Introduces La Lupe
La Lupe y Tite Curet Alonso

At this point, I will probably hold off and see what gets remastered. I want whatever album has "Yesterday" on it. Actually, I want pretty much all her albums with Tito Puente.

That's a lot of Beresford!

Galina Ustvolskaya's concerto for piano/timpani/strings - now this is how I think Shostakovich would sound like if I wasn't so bored by the bits I've heard so far. On its own its ok.

'The impulse Within' (for string quartet and percussion) by Dominik Karski and a chamber work by Bruno Maderna are really great. xp

tiit (tiit), Monday, 2 October 2006 17:09 (nineteen years ago)

Seksu Roba's Pleasure Vibrations. Sexier than it sounds even, saw them 2 years ago this halloween, don't remember them being this house-y and lustful. Gotta catch the next show. Best of the Platters, sublime. Jim O'Rourke's Bad Timing, some Yung Joc stuff, very un-autumny. Gave Tom Waits' Foreign Affairs yet another shot(i'm more than a TW completist, I have to like every album too I guess) --it's just a poor album, distilling the dregs of his other 70's albums into a handy fun-size nugget of suckfuck. Still don't get the Burma Shave love, the song after it is way better in fact but not great.
Pet Shop Boys were far and away my "autumn" obsession last year, can't wait to see who emerges this year, it's none of these though.

As a result of catching up w/Rivette's 'La Belle Noiseuse' I tracked down Stravinsky's 'Agon' and its fascinating (rivetting, in fact) with passages seemingly cobbled from both tonal and 12-tone.

Trying to catch with UK garage as listed on the ILM thread.

willem -- (willem), Sunday, 8 October 2006 09:00 (nineteen years ago)

Another day, more composers.

Sylvano Bussotti - 'Rara (ecco sierologico)'. Its a graphic score, the version I have is for guitar although there have been several versions incl this really 'wild' version for cello that I've read about. Its frightengly Bailey-like but slowed-down.

Clarence Barlow and some works on his 'Musica Derivata' disc and finally the best work I've heard from Henry Cowell (besides the works for piano): 'Quartet Romantic' for 2 flutes, violin and piano - both keep you on yr toes.

Kirilola's four-song EP.
Sounds beautiful too.
"Very new", she said of it h'self. But as practically everything here is written in Japanese, I'm not, alas, able to tell who else is contributing. The keyboard parts might, or might not, be Hoppy Kamiyama's... There's some koto, and unintrusive percussion, real or virtual strings.

Sunday: so much Radio2 - Russell Davies, then Pick of the Pops on which Helen Shapiro's 'You Don't Know' was sublime as a fine wine, and then Johnny Walker as McGuinn was coming on. JW started off in 1960s pop, has spent all his life in pop, and ... calls him 'McGinn'. For heaven's sake.

Last night: Stillhouse, Through The Winter, with its one heartstopping country-rock masterpiece; and the whole of Lloyd's Antidepressant, in random order. It sounded terrific, beautiful at times.

This morning: The Carousel. Did they write those folktastic songs themselves?
