Don't blame me for the title, it was FP's idea.

No F**tb*ll (I'd say No B*g Br*th*r, but I think it's over.) Lots of spacerock and prog and bitching about work and complaining about our databases and random photos of DDBs for all.

Kate is queen and what we say goes. Bow before us! And fetch us some more coffee while you're in the kitchen.

Now check your feuds at the door, please.

Angel In Love With Her Own Pedals (kate), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 10:27 (nineteen years ago)

I made a cheese and onion quiche yesterday and bought it into work . . . anyoen want some?

Johnny B Was Quizzical (Johnney B), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 10:29 (nineteen years ago)

And here is a picture of Benjamin to start the proceedings:

Angel In Love With Her Own Pedals (kate), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 10:30 (nineteen years ago)

i am teh_kit! (g-kit), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 10:42 (nineteen years ago)

Oh noes, Ryan sitting opposite me just had the last bit! Sorry my dear, your own fault for not being in the same place as me.

I'm making lardy cake tonight . . . super-yum!

Johnny B Was Quizzical (Johnney B), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 10:42 (nineteen years ago)

The Royal We. As in, "we are not amused".

Angel In Love With Her Own Pedals (kate), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 10:45 (nineteen years ago)

Lard, yuck. Can I have gingercake, please?

Angel In Love With Her Own Pedals (kate), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 10:45 (nineteen years ago)

Lardy cake is amazing! I don't use real lard (simply cos it's a pain to get since I have to trek over to the butcher) but the lard+butter combo gives it this amazing moist texture. It's my new favourite cake.

Johnny B Was Quizzical (Johnney B), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 10:48 (nineteen years ago)

OK, speaking of Muse, the one thing that irritates me about them is that they seem to have claimed the phrase "supermassive" for their own, which is annoying because it's the first popular usage of a common astronomical term but it's now associated with them. Bah. I was using it in my screen name in, what? 2004?

Angel In Love With Her Own Pedals (kate), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 10:51 (nineteen years ago)

I must educate you in the ways of parkin and lard, oatmeal and flour based cake, heavily spiced.

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 10:51 (nineteen years ago)

I hard many good thigns about parkin, but I have yet to try it.

Oooh, delia's got a recipe!

Johnny B Was Quizzical (Johnney B), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 10:53 (nineteen years ago)

Stop talking about lard, or I'll, or I'll... post THIS!!!

Angel In Love With Her Own Pedals (kate), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 10:56 (nineteen years ago)

Why the lardhate? Veg lard won't offend your vegibilites, and it's nice in everything!

Johnny B Was Quizzical (Johnney B), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 10:58 (nineteen years ago)

Because I had to make ... errr, what was it? Something christmassy that required vast quantities of lard and suet and stuff when I was a young girl in 4H. And I got up to my elbows in lard and it was gross.

Angel In Love With Her Own Pedals (kate), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 10:59 (nineteen years ago)

Lard is great.

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 11:02 (nineteen years ago)

you're insane.

i am teh_kit! (g-kit), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 11:06 (nineteen years ago)

I never had cookery lessons in school, which is unfortuante, since I'm sure I'd ace it.

Johnny B Was Quizzical (Johnney B), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 11:14 (nineteen years ago)

From another Galaxy, far awayish...
Right, I finally upped and ordered the single!
Ooh, it'd better be good! :)

-- M Grout (mark.grou...), August 31st, 2006.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On Ed's stereo... well, Ed's stereo sounds SOOO NICE that everything sounds good on it. But well, it was the first time I'd actually listened to it and really felt... PROUD.
Like, "wow, we made that!"

So if you don't like it... get a better stereo! hah! :-P

-- masonic boom (kateotheremail@yahoo.co.uk), August 31st, 2006.

Wellp. Just arrived this lunchtime and gave it the car stereo test. And it's pretty damn great! Hooray!

And even if you'd said "Don't say Stereolab", I wouldn't have said that anyway. It has a tune for a start. And a fuzz guitar fadeout.

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 11:50 (nineteen years ago)

I LIKE IT when people say "Stereolab"! Benjamin said we sounded like Stereolab! OK, he was talking about Noyfriend, not Stronger, but still.

Wow, you have a record player in your car?

Angel In Love With Her Own Pedals (kate), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 11:54 (nineteen years ago)

Nah, went home lunchtime, recorded it onto minidisc, played it on the way back to work. Imagine: living that close to work.

Caveat: "Noyfriend", by it's title alone, should sound like Stereolab.

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 11:56 (nineteen years ago)

Oh, and it had a nice autograph slip in it. From "John Brainlove" admittedly but hey.

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 12:00 (nineteen years ago)

Bleurgh, that just put me off my lunch.

I want cake. I just had a piece of Finnish candy and I need to get the taste out of my mouth. I didn't mind the saltiness of it, but it was LIQUORICE flavour which is revolting.

Angel In Love With Her Own Pedals (kate), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 12:02 (nineteen years ago)

liquorice is delightful, as is aniseed, ouzo, sambuca, and anything else of that bent. :p

Obvious Ninja (Haberdager), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 12:16 (nineteen years ago)

Euuw, eeeuuuw, eeeuuuuw!

I had a traumatic childhood experience with it. I find it revolting.

Like lard... hrmmm. What is it, gross out Kate with food day today?

Angel In Love With Her Own Pedals (kate), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 12:18 (nineteen years ago)

Salmiakki

Its Scandinavia's joke on the world.

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 12:19 (nineteen years ago)

Salmiakki isn't nice. I had a bottle of it once. We kept it in the freezer and bought it out when we wanted pain.

Johnny B Was Quizzical (Johnney B), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 12:24 (nineteen years ago)

God, why did I look at the fashion thread? Compared to that, quantum theory is simple.

I'd start wearing a burkha if it wasn't for the political and religious assocations.

Where can one get sackcloth in this day and age?

Angel In Love With Her Own Pedals (kate), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 12:34 (nineteen years ago)

there's a fashion thread?

i'm considering going on there and posting the word "SHORTS".
it's a laugh, no?

i am teh_kit! (g-kit), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 12:36 (nineteen years ago)

I have that Lard EP!

Lard the food product sucks though - you want some beef dripping.

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 12:39 (nineteen years ago)

Dripping si great for roasts, less good for cake. I've never had the fabled dripping on toast tho.

Johnny B Was Quizzical (Johnney B), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 12:45 (nineteen years ago)

PLEASE NOTE: Unless otherwise posted, admittance restricted to 18 years of age or older. This includes infants and toddlers.

From the Toronto Film Festival website. Presumably they meant to type 18 MONTHS old.

=== temporary username === (Mark C), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 13:08 (nineteen years ago)

No, I think that means all the audience are to be 18 years and older - no exceptions for infants.

When I was young, my mum was always just taking me to R rated films and stuff, her excuse being "oh she's a baby, it will go just right over her head."

Angel In Love With Her Own Pedals (kate), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 13:15 (nineteen years ago)

Did it?

Johnny B Was Quizzical (Johnney B), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 13:23 (nineteen years ago)

It did when I was a baby, obviously, but she persisted, even as I got past the toddling stages. I think by the time of Tess of the D'Urbervilles and Being There, I was starting to ask questions and she realised that I was getting too old for the movies to just go over the top of my head.

Still took me to Garp a few years later, anyway, and I was way too young for that.

Do I have enough brain left to start the Pipeline recc? I don't think I do. Will my friend ever get back to me about whether she will go to dinner with me tonight? I don't know. I can't face another night going home and staring at the walls, it's kind of getting to me right now. What should I do for the rest of the day?

What on earth is a Stalking Horse?

Angel In Love With Her Own Pedals (kate), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 14:02 (nineteen years ago)

Someone to challenge a leader despite them being unable to win. Like wot happened to Thatcher. She beats a no-hoper but not convincingly enough to look like the party is behind her - then the big guns step in (and they all lose and and we get John Major rofl)

Onimo (GerryNemo), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 14:05 (nineteen years ago)

gah, I had hoped to redo the dongle database and leave early today as the rest of the company have gone to Amsterdam, but I have spent the day dealing with support issues and phone SPAM.

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 14:06 (nineteen years ago)

It's almost impossible to be a labour stalking horse.

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 14:06 (nineteen years ago)

Ed, Magz did not 'get' me. Did you give her proper numbers? And what is going on with my email, more specifically than 'it's fucked'?

suzy (suzy), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 14:12 (nineteen years ago)

your reply-to address in the header missies out the end of your email addy so when you click reply and don't adjust it the mail bounces. Check the setting in wemail or email client or whatever.

Magz was going to email you, I think hers is [first name] @ resonancefm.com I've got no number for her.

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 14:15 (nineteen years ago)

Ah, will fix.

suzy (suzy), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 14:28 (nineteen years ago)

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 14:29 (nineteen years ago)

Oh, is that who that is! I was wondering why you posted that on the other thread.

Angel In Love With Her Own Pedals (kate), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 14:31 (nineteen years ago)

there's some good stuff on it, the sessions from the green man folk festival have been floating my boat.

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 14:33 (nineteen years ago)

Oh fuck it, dinner date just cancelled. I might as well stay at work all night and do this recc since I've fuckall else to do. Bah. Cabin fever, seriously. What's open late on Wednesday nights so I don't have to go home?

Angel In Love With Her Own Pedals (kate), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 15:14 (nineteen years ago)

Hrrrmmm. Chuck just invited me to go and see a band. (Shortwave Set at the ICA.)

And I suddenly realised exactly what's wrong ... with everything. I just don't enjoy watching bands any more. I still like listening to music. But the whole experience of going to gigs, standing and watching a band, queues for the bar (do I have to be drinking to enjoy a gig?)... I just can't face it.

No wonder I don't want enjoy playing gigs any more if I just don't like the gigging experience any more. It's the same dilemma - how can you enjoy sex when you don't feel sexy?

Am I overthinking this? Probably. I'm just bored out of my mind. Maybe I should buy a television and anethsetise myself like everyone else.

Angel In Love With Her Own Pedals (kate), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 15:42 (nineteen years ago)

could always do what i've done twice already this week - go to bed at 9:30.

Koogy Yonderboy (koogs), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 15:47 (nineteen years ago)

I did that last night. No, wait, I candlefarmed for an hour first.

God, I am just feeling so damned OTHERWISE. It must be the seasonal change.

Maybe I'll take myself out to dinner and wander through London for a bit. Who knows.

Angel In Love With Her Own Pedals (kate), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 15:48 (nineteen years ago)

yes, i think the fact that it's dark enough to need the lights on at 7:30 these days has screwed up something in my head. that and lack of decent tv. just gave up, went to bed and read another chapter of book.

feel another early night coming on tonight having been mostly awake since 3:30 this morning after being woken by mouse, the fucker.

Koogy Yonderboy (koogs), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 15:57 (nineteen years ago)

my sister loves to call over here at undergodly early hours, just because her kids wake her up, she seems to think everyone else is, too. grr.

i am grumpy today.

i'll mitya halfway (mitya), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 15:58 (nineteen years ago)

On the other hand, maybe I'll go home and run a hot bath with lots of bubbles and burn scented candles and listen to TSM.

I want a falafel. The falafel shop on my street was closed when I went home last night.

Angel In Love With Her Own Pedals (kate), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 16:02 (nineteen years ago)

I'm just feeling otherwise because two friends have cancelled dinner plans two nights in a row and I'm feeling unloved. :-(

Angel In Love With Her Own Pedals (kate), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 16:03 (nineteen years ago)

Wh Smiths were selling Plan B. They were on the bottom shelf and I placed them all on the special rack where NME is.
I am so subversive...

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 16:14 (nineteen years ago)

GOD I STILL HAVEN'T GOT MY STAFF COPY!!

That's it, I'm never writing for them again. Fuckit.

Angel In Love With Her Own Pedals (kate), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 16:17 (nineteen years ago)

Go home and eat falafel in the bath, wander through London - what say ye?

Angel In Love With Her Own Pedals (kate), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 16:27 (nineteen years ago)

Wandering through London, occasionally popping in a pub so as to get gradually drunk and depressed seems like the best option. Falafel in the bathtub somehow just wouldn't do it for me.

The non-emo version would be just to grab whatever food on the way home and go to bed WAY early. Catching up on sleep occasionally can be a good thing.

i'll mitya halfway (mitya), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 16:31 (nineteen years ago)

I've had too *much* sleep lately. If that's possible. The depressed, just lying in bed kind, not the good, restful kind. Who knows. I had the best falafel recently, but cannot remember for the life of me where, as it was a real stumbling home drunk type thing.

Angel In Love With Her Own Pedals (kate), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 16:33 (nineteen years ago)

i am not going to be much help on this, unfortunately, because i generally get myself more depressed in such situations. and because i have a preternatural ability to fall asleep at any time (even though i may wake up in the middle of the night, stressed and grinding my teeth).

*looking* fof falafel sounds like a dicey option, though

i'll mitya halfway (mitya), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 16:37 (nineteen years ago)

> Falafel in the bathtub

i am now singing that (to myself) to the tune of 'vicar in a tutu'. drat.

Koogy Yonderboy (koogs), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 16:42 (nineteen years ago)

Early night tonight for Poptimism tomorrow? It's what I would be doing if I was brighter.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 16:59 (nineteen years ago)

I've been like that recently since I've given up sm0king during the week. I've been getting to sleep early with a combination of John Steinbeck, hot chocolate with loads of Amaretto, and a big wank.

Johnny B Was Quizzical (Johnney B), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 18:36 (nineteen years ago)

Bah, started posting on Thread 15 this morning, forgetting this one had started. Oops.

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Thursday, 7 September 2006 07:08 (nineteen years ago)

I have had coffee. All is well now.

C J (C J), Thursday, 7 September 2006 07:39 (nineteen years ago)

Any of you lot in the Soho/Piccadilly area? If so, any idea WTF happened down Glasshouse St this morning/last night? Whole street & a couple of side streets cordoned off this morning. Unfortunately the cordon stops just before the street my office is on, so I was able to get in to work.

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Thursday, 7 September 2006 07:51 (nineteen years ago)

Picked up "Music Mart" yesterday, noted appearance of Ms St-C's band in the truck writeup. Congratulations! ("Music Mart" seems like a decent publication as well)

Pashmina (Pashmina), Thursday, 7 September 2006 08:06 (nineteen years ago)

Yes, I like Music Mart, it's a music magazine for musicians. V. nice.

In the end, I just went home. And bought a falafel at the shop on my street. Which turned out to be quite disappointing. It tasted vaguely of chicken. Which made me fear for the oil it was cooked in. Blah.

I need to resume my search for the amazing falafel I had in a drunken daze recently.

Angel In Love With Her Own Pedals (kate), Thursday, 7 September 2006 08:16 (nineteen years ago)

Oooh, there's been a big bitch session this morning, about how none of us are allowed to take time off. Which reminds me - I should speak to my boss about taking time off. Even though I can't get month end (I'd love to go to NYC and see TSM, for one thing...) I have to have SOME time off or I'm going to die.

(Last night I dreamed I was sacked. I told my colleague this and she burst out laughing.)

Angel In Love With Her Own Pedals (kate), Thursday, 7 September 2006 08:32 (nineteen years ago)

That's got to be a good sign (your colleague's reaction).

g00blar (gooblar), Thursday, 7 September 2006 08:33 (nineteen years ago)

I have actually managed to make myself indispensible at this place.

However, this isn't necessarily a good thing WRT my actual life. I'm not going to be able to play the next Shimuras gig because it's a month end.

Angel In Love With Her Own Pedals (kate), Thursday, 7 September 2006 08:35 (nineteen years ago)

So, what? Rescheduled gig? Cancelled? A Flat-K8?

g00blar (gooblar), Thursday, 7 September 2006 08:40 (nineteen years ago)

Hell of a typo in the headline there.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 7 September 2006 08:43 (nineteen years ago)

They are doing it without me. I have finally succeeded in programming my essence into a computer, which will take my place.

Angel In Love With Her Own Pedals (kate), Thursday, 7 September 2006 08:43 (nineteen years ago)

what kind of plant would I be?

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Thursday, 7 September 2006 08:45 (nineteen years ago)

A Venus Flytrap? The "Feed me, Seymour, feed me!" man-eating flytrap?

Angel In Love With Her Own Pedals (kate), Thursday, 7 September 2006 08:48 (nineteen years ago)

that is one bad typo in the headline of that article. (xpost)

Koogy Yonderboy (koogs), Thursday, 7 September 2006 08:49 (nineteen years ago)

I simply *HAVE* to do the pipeline recconcilliation now. Bah.

that's pretty kooky. maybe we had this conversation before. without Patsy.

it's teh_kit! (g-kit), Thursday, 7 September 2006 09:48 (nineteen years ago)

I think you may have posted them on IMM or something before, and I downloaded them with the intention of taking them home and listening to them (before I got my headphones and my media player sorted) and then forgot all about them.

Anyway, I am listening to them now. I'm quite surprised, it's not what I would have expected you to make - much spikier and more aggressive. But it's good, it makes me want to bounce around and air punch things. Kind of like a heavy metal Pixies. With strange bass breaks. I like the bits where the music goes heavy, and then stops and the guitar goes "NYEAH!!!"

I don't have the faintest clue what Patsy Palmer sounds like, so I can't say whether you sound like her or not. But I do like the vocals, they're kind of demented and hysterical in a good way, like someone who has had far too much tea and is feeling a bit dishevelled and confused by the world.

It is good. I think Emsk would like it, too, actually. It's not a million miles from the Victorians.

Angel In Love With Her Own Pedals (kate), Thursday, 7 September 2006 09:53 (nineteen years ago)

aw! thanks so much. that really, really means a lot to me.
you basically said everything i'd like people to say when they hear it.
i feel very sappy now. i want to hug people.
oh noes, i think i just caught Emo.

(someone who has had far too much tea and is feeling a bit dishevelled and confused by the world. OTM?

it's teh_kit! (g-kit), Thursday, 7 September 2006 10:01 (nineteen years ago)

Is your music on lasteffem kit?

Onimo (GerryNemo), Thursday, 7 September 2006 10:04 (nineteen years ago)

(if anyone was in the slightest bit curious - the Patsy Palmer in huge record thing was that she was one of the kids shouting the chorus on Pink Floyd's "Another Brick In The Wall - Part 2")

Onimo (GerryNemo), Thursday, 7 September 2006 10:06 (nineteen years ago)

noes, not to listen to. as far as i know.

xpost holy crap, is that true?
so she had better success than Rickaaaay's "hit".

it's teh_kit! (g-kit), Thursday, 7 September 2006 10:08 (nineteen years ago)

I remember her talking about it in an interview, she didn't realise it was a big deal at the time. Last number 1 single of the 70s/first of the 80s, I think - and Floyd's only number 1 single.

Send me a kit tuen.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Thursday, 7 September 2006 10:24 (nineteen years ago)

Blimey! We just got compared to Spirea X on DiS!

I'm surprised anyone on DiS has actualy HEARD of Spirea X, but still, it makes me very very happy.

Angel In Love With Her Own Pedals (kate), Thursday, 7 September 2006 10:46 (nineteen years ago)

I found a Spirea X CD (Chlorine Dream EP) in a box of books the other day, which was a pleasant surprise.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Thursday, 7 September 2006 10:53 (nineteen years ago)

Spirea X wtf. I mean Spirea X were really good, and you're really good, but I don't get that one at all.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Thursday, 7 September 2006 10:54 (nineteen years ago)

shoe gaze + harmonies - esp. on Speed Reaction.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Thursday, 7 September 2006 10:56 (nineteen years ago)

First combination of shoegazer/psych guitar wibble with electro beats and harmony vocals. It makes sense to me. I am far happier to be compared to them, then the sodding P1pp3tt3$.

Angel In Love With Her Own Pedals (kate), Thursday, 7 September 2006 10:57 (nineteen years ago)

I can't really think of anything I'd compare SC's sound to, TBH, it's pretty unique! (to my ears)

Pashmina (Pashmina), Thursday, 7 September 2006 10:59 (nineteen years ago)

God, I've not heard any Spirea X in years... don't even know where their album got to. Might be in storage at my mum's. But I've got to keep a lookout for it. If it's even in print any more...

I loved Speed Reaction, Chlorine Dream, etc. Proto shoerave stuff from the guitarist who was sacked from Primal Scream for being a hippie.
;-)

Angel In Love With Her Own Pedals (kate), Thursday, 7 September 2006 11:01 (nineteen years ago)

Never heard of Spirea X. SC sound both very familiar and unique to me -- like I've heard something like them before, but I never actually remember who it was. If you guys weren't sort of a songwriter's vanity project (no offense intended), it would be interesting to hear you do a covers set of all those things "around" your sound.

(Are we allowed to talk about SC or do you get in trouble for that?)

i'll mitya halfway (mitya), Thursday, 7 September 2006 11:59 (nineteen years ago)

Great.

And now it looks like the fourth set of plans for the week are going to collapse.

I should just go home and barricade myself in my flat and never even try to go out. In fact, I should get a broadband connection in my flat and never even go to the office.

If anyone wants me, I'll be off boiling me head.

But on closer examination, they were enourmous glasses.

BBC Proms in the Park
9 September 2006, Hyde Park, London

Lionel Richie plus tenor Vittorio Grigolo added to line-up joining: Angela Gheorghiu, Alison Balsom, Terry Wogan and the BBC Concert Orchestra conducted by Carl Davis.

Music icon Lionel Richie will perform at BBC Proms in the Park in London's Hyde Park this September.

One of the most successful male solo artists of all time, Lionel will perform both old and new material re-orchestrated for performance with the BBC Concert Orchestra to serenade the audience under the stars.

Richie, who started off his career with band the Commodores, has a string of timeless hits to his credit including Hello and Dancing on the Ceiling. He performs at BBC Proms in the Park on the eve of releasing his new album Coming Home.

Italian singing sensation Vittorio Grigolo has also been added to the already impressive line-up. The 28-year-old Italian has taken both the opera and pop-music worlds by storm this year.

Having honed a reputation as one of today's finest young tenors, Vittorio has performances at some of the world's top opera houses under his belt, as well as a Top 10 album in the mainstream British charts.

Lionel and Vittorio take their places alongside a distinguished line-up for BBC Proms in the Park as they join top Romanian soprano Angela Gheorghiu and award-winning trumpeter Alison Balsom.

They all perform on stage with the BBC Concert Orchestra conducted by Carl Davis for an amazing evening under the stars presented by Terry Wogan.

The event culminates in a live link-up with the Royal Albert Hall enabling audiences to experience the full magic of the Last Night of the Proms.

Live-wire X Factor finalist Chico has been added to the line-up for the afternoon's warm-up events which are presented by BBC Radio 2's Ken Bruce.

Also appearing on stage to prepare the audience for the main broadcast show are pub-rock legends Chas & Dave and Madness tribute band One Step Behind.

Over the last ten years BBC Proms in the Park has brought the magic of the Last Night of the Proms to more than one million people across the United Kingdom.
Now an integral part of the UK's musical calendar, Proms in the Park takes places in five locations across all four nations of the United Kingdom – Glasgow, Belfast, Manchester, Swansea and London.

BBC Concert Orchestra conducted by Carl Davis. Hosted by Terry Wogan with Lionel Richie and special guests Angela Gheorghiu, Vittorio Grigolo and Alison Balsom

Huh. What do you know? I'm not going crazy. I'm just upset I was at the library all day and missed Chico Time.

g00blar (gooblar), Saturday, 9 September 2006 20:10 (nineteen years ago)

I feel cheated. We were at the Glasgow one, and we never got no Chico, Chas'n'Dave or Lionel Rich Tea. I want my money back! (OK, it was free, and it was excellent, but that's not the point!)

I might listen to some siggur ros now, for the first time since I walked out of their set at labradford's festival of drifting in 199x.

Sigur Ros were knocked off the top of the weekly watercooler charts.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Sunday, 10 September 2006 20:54 (nineteen years ago)

Morning there.

Don't forget to tell us all the tawdry details next week!

Hey, there's nothing tawdry about my weekends!

To be honest, it was fairly quiet. On Saturday morning, one of our friends phoned A and said: "waaaah dumped waaaaahhhhh", so we dragged her out of bed (literally, with two of us dragging her duvet away until she agreed to get up), took her shopping, and ate ice cream until we all felt sick. On Saturday night, we went out to karaoke, and I had my ego boosted because of all A's friends who hadn't met me before, came up to her and said "phwoar, he's a catch!" or something similar. On Sunday, we both just felt ill (nasty throat infections), so had a yummy fry-up then went back to sleep for the rest of the day.

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Monday, 11 September 2006 06:46 (nineteen years ago)

I'm in love with reykjavik. I want to move there and open a microbrewery/cafe/bar. Stunnin countryside, hot springs, slightly rotten egg smell to the hot water. On my way to reims now to get 168 bottles of champagne.

Ed (dali), Monday, 11 September 2006 09:33 (nineteen years ago)

is this Shimura tv slot going to be available on the internet at any point?

Ste (Fuzzy), Monday, 11 September 2006 11:20 (nineteen years ago)

*exhales*

First class over with; not bad at all. No one died. I didn't meander and 'um' and 'uh' too too much. A lot of students, though--28 are registered for each section, and more have come to 'audit' it. Might put the kibosh on some of my visionary participatory lesson plans.

Have I mentioned that I'm teaching (and have an office) IN A CASTLE? Honestly, I've forgotten if I said that.

g00blar (gooblar), Monday, 11 September 2006 11:22 (nineteen years ago)

most of Breakfast pages (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/programmes/breakfast/default.stm) have a 'watch this' link on them so maybe...

Koogy Yonderboy (koogs), Monday, 11 September 2006 11:28 (nineteen years ago)

Pashmina (Pashmina), Monday, 11 September 2006 11:32 (nineteen years ago)

Ed, you have caught the wave of Icelandic microbrewery aspiration too late - that's very Albarn '96 of you.

Please to grab from Carrefours one pongy Epoisses and a bag of posh rock salt and one of those duck/porc saucissons. Merci!

suzy (suzy), Monday, 11 September 2006 12:02 (nineteen years ago)

What a nice day Out There!

Gooblar, do you have toilets that are just holes over the moat? That really appeals for some reason.

Pashmina, what shenanigans?

beanz (beanz), Monday, 11 September 2006 12:06 (nineteen years ago)

it's a nice, hot, frisbee day! yay!

teh_kit (g-kit), Monday, 11 September 2006 12:11 (nineteen years ago)

we've been booked to play a gig in Leeds at the end of October. We got booked months ago. We're "top of the bill" (it's pretty obscure, obv) Less that a month ago, one of the supports dropped out, and another guy who I know and get on w/pretty well stepped in. Dep-in guy is now claiming that he is doing the gig on the understanding that he is "headliner", which is wtf in itself, but to make it worse/weirder, he's also claiming that we'd discussed & agreed to this "a couple of months ago" which is pretty fucked considering that a/we didn't and b/he actually got added to the bill much less than "a couple of months ago".

Pashmina (Pashmina), Monday, 11 September 2006 12:15 (nineteen years ago)

What an arse

beanz (beanz), Monday, 11 September 2006 12:19 (nineteen years ago)

I just got an email from the promoter, basically saying "I agree with you, but I know better than to get involved" wtf wtf, I mean he's only the promoter, isn't he.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Monday, 11 September 2006 12:20 (nineteen years ago)

The other thing I fail to mention yet is that if we draw 20 ppl, we'll be doing well.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Monday, 11 September 2006 12:21 (nineteen years ago)

gee, just cancel it. fuck em.

teh_kit (g-kit), Monday, 11 September 2006 12:29 (nineteen years ago)

I want to play! It's fun to play, that's the only reason I'm doing it. I just don't get prima donna-ish hassles over something as little as this.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Monday, 11 September 2006 12:33 (nineteen years ago)

You'll never be famous if you treat yr 20 hardcore followers that way kit.

Tell stand in guy to fuck off, get new stand in guy(s).

Onimo (GerryNemo), Monday, 11 September 2006 12:33 (nineteen years ago)

I think it's probably going to come to that.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Monday, 11 September 2006 12:37 (nineteen years ago)

Try a sound system fite. Both of you set up either end, see who gets the bigger audience.

Actually, Onimo's advice is better tbh.

beanz (beanz), Monday, 11 September 2006 12:49 (nineteen years ago)

see, this is why i don't usually let people hear my music. if people liked us, we'd have to like.. play and stuff. that's TOO MUCH responsibilty.

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Monday, 11 September 2006 13:05 (nineteen years ago)

i dunno, it must be a joke tbh. it's possibly the dumbest thing i ever heard. anybody can take a photograph of something tiny that you have 100% control over. i'd feel like a cunt for taking money for something so simple. and something i've already been paid for. srsly, wtf?

teh_kit (g-kit), Monday, 11 September 2006 13:07 (nineteen years ago)

kit, taking the money doesn't make you a cunt. They want to use your work, they don't want to ask someone else to do it cos it's easiest maybe

beanz (beanz), Monday, 11 September 2006 13:10 (nineteen years ago)

Take the money, Kit. Buy something you like with it.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Monday, 11 September 2006 13:11 (nineteen years ago)

beanz (beanz), Monday, 11 September 2006 13:12 (nineteen years ago)

It's harder that you think. I've never been completely happy with the photos I've taken of railway models, even when I've had virtually full access to the models in question.

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Monday, 11 September 2006 13:14 (nineteen years ago)

yep koogy, bestival. it was ACES, what a lush festival! it feels halfway between truck and glastonbury - lovely lovely atmosphere, gorgeous setting (some kind of country park thing with RED squirrels and a toboggan ride and woods for getting lost in and a pond and hills), plenty of space for wandering around and being quiet if you get crowdsick, plenty of glastonburyish (ie building a ten-foot-tall elephant or a willow dome, inflatable church) non-music stuff going on if your choice of bands is something rub like guillemots (boring) vs young knives (ditto). and i saw lily allen and i LIKED her! omg beginning of end etc etc. and her tourbus was parked next to ours (haha, "ours") apparently though i didn't see her hanging around up there (well i saw someone who might have been her having a shouted conversation with someone who might have been her dad but i am crap at recognising famous people so i really don't know). i saw magnetophone which has got sonic boom in now, and the long blondes, and the bloody PET SHOP BOYS woohoo!, and i was coerced into watching some scissor sisters which was tedious shite. yeah haha i missed my bus, i thought it was a good idea (or even a possible one) to go to poptimism thurs night then catch a 7.15am bus from victoria on friday. HA HA. but it worked out fine cos i got to swan down there in a fuckoff 15-sleeper tourbus yay yay. it was beautiful sunny all weekend, security people were chilled and friendly. loads of fancy dress people all weekend and someone had thoughtfully provided a lot of small children for the rest of us to laugh at, and there are hills on each side of it so you can climb up and look down at the festival. ferry back from the island at 2.30 this morning, bus from southampton at 4, asleep in bed by 7.30. lush. i want to go back next year.

Be cautious, this is a slippery slope. ;-)

PSBs? I R jealous. :-/

Hello all.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Monday, 11 September 2006 13:26 (nineteen years ago)

i saw lily allen and i LIKED her! omg beginning of end etc etc.

Be cautious, this is a slippery slope. ;-)

she was just on at the perfect time i think, i went more for curiosity than anything else thinking well, i'll prob never see her again so might as well, but it was about 5pm on saturday and sunny and everyone around was dancing and really happy and she was goofy and sweet and natural and like a person not a princess and i even recognised her single though i couldn't sing it back to you now. maybe i should find her myspace.

aw ned, the petshops were fucking CLASS. i didn't know they were playing until saturday morning (it wasn't a secret, i just wasn't paying attention) but from start to finish it was perfect, a proper kickarse popshow in all the ways that the scissor sisters set wasn't. we got really close to the front too cos we couldn't read our timetable (oh dear) and got there 40 minutes too early :)

emsk ( emsk), Monday, 11 September 2006 13:29 (nineteen years ago)

I have a lot of time for Uncle Neil; sounds awesome. Did you see Scritti?

suzy (suzy), Monday, 11 September 2006 13:32 (nineteen years ago)

Scissors Sisters are one of the worst things I've ever heard. Worse than the fun lovin criminals, maroon 5 , ocean colour scene, catatonia, stereophonics.
I'd far rather watch PSb even though I havent liked anything by them in over 10 years.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Monday, 11 September 2006 13:34 (nineteen years ago)

I still say Introspective is a very underated album.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Monday, 11 September 2006 13:34 (nineteen years ago)

yeh i saw scritti! not the whole set though, i saw a LOT of halves and thirds of sets because the line up was so damn good. i had gone a bit um hazy by then but i remember jumping around a lot.
Scissors Sisters are one of the worst things I've ever heard. Worse than the fun lovin criminals, maroon 5 , ocean colour scene, catatonia, stereophonics.

yes yes yes. (except i like catatonia and once i saw stereophonics just before their first or second single came out and it was actually *mumbles*areallygoodgigthereisaidit but then i saw them again and it was fucking horrific, total car crash badness). scissor sisters are meant to be all about FUN, surely? i saw them at glastonbury a couple of years back and was quite up for them but they were just dull, there's something really cold and calculated about them that kills any joy stone dead. really didn't want to see them this time but agreed for oh i dunno some reason i've forgotten. only for like 15 minutes though.

emsk ( emsk), Monday, 11 September 2006 13:40 (nineteen years ago)

Scissor Sisters are the worst thing ever.

teh_kit (g-kit), Monday, 11 September 2006 13:42 (nineteen years ago)

Kerr haets fun lovin criminals!

Onimo (GerryNemo), Monday, 11 September 2006 13:43 (nineteen years ago)

Scissor Sisters were fun when I saw them about 2 years ago. Maybe they're a bit bored of playing life now? And the new song doesn't sound as great as the stuff off their first album.

I'd love to see Pet Shop Boys one day. In fact I'd love to have gone to Bestival, except I can't find people to go to festivals with.. bah!

jellybean (jellybean), Monday, 11 September 2006 13:45 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, I saw Scissor Sisters two or three years ago in a small venue, and it was great. Possibly it was the last time that they had more Disco Fans (IE teh gays) in the audience excited at the second coming than haircut trendoids (not more by much, admittedly). I can see how if they weren't into it it would be crap, but the amount of energy coming off the stage that night was astounding, like the PSBs at their height.

albarn may have had a minority stake in a reyjavik bar since 1995 ( and very nice it is too, was still there at 0530 saturday morning, it has the cutest girls and boys) however alon with every other bar in iceland it has beer that tastes like watered down sheep piss and is the fizziest substance known to man. I have spotted a niche.

Hello, I'm back.

Kit, take the money.

Pash, let the guy think he is the "headliner" then play an hour an a half set, leaving him about 15, 20 minutes to play at the very end, after everyone has left to catch the last train. That is the surest way to deal with headlining egos.

God, I need a holiday. Will speak to my boss today, perhaps take next week off. It's no longer want a holiday, it's need a holiday or I'm going to drop dead.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 11:53 (nineteen years ago)

I can't see any of the triumvirate of terror being pleased. Which is why it's so amusing to see them playing 20 questions and making cnuts of themselves.

Angel In Love With Her Own Pedals (kate), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 11:54 (nineteen years ago)

I mean, "three ILX0rs (and a lurker*) will be on the telly" is not at all exciting, really, is it?

*Hello, AMP.

Angel In Love With Her Own Pedals (kate), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 11:55 (nineteen years ago)

I think it's more likely everyone knows and is just fucking around.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 11:56 (nineteen years ago)

Nearly all of the homepages on gbotw are gone, they were the best things about it. A few of them were really cool, most of them were either minor variations on the same thing, or terrible, admittedly. You could probably write some kind of essay on the er transient nature of the yahoo geocities personal webpage based on it. I wonder if myspace/livejournal is to 2006 what yahoo/geocities/tripod etc were to '98-99.

OK, back to work.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 11:59 (nineteen years ago)

Nah, Livejournal is so 2003!

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 11:59 (nineteen years ago)

Oh, in that case, they're just cnuts. Whatevs. I'll be bovvered when I see their fat ugly faces on the telly.

x-post ... surely Geocities' highlight was more like 96/97.

Angel In Love With Her Own Pedals (kate), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 12:48 (nineteen years ago)

Happy Birthday, Mitya!

Back to work for me, although it's just inputting invoices into the computer, so I'm still here @ the computer.

I guess LJ was kind of buzz buzz buzz-ish in '03, but it is still going pretty strong from what I can see.

I got online in '98, the 2 things I wanted to see first were analogue heaven mail list(which I think I read about in "Sound on Sound"), which I'm still subscribed to as well, and "gothic babe of the week", which I read about in "Select". Goth girls = krowr, and all that. I used to check it every monday for a couple of years. It seems so naive in retrospect, the worst thing I could say about it is that it was a bit cheezy. Now something like that would probably be either presented really cynically, probably as a ca$h-cow, or there'd be something really creepy about it. Or maybe not, maybe it's just nostalgia for when it was all new.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 12:50 (nineteen years ago)

Damn I pressed submit by mistake. I meant to say theres a new issue of http://www.rock-a-rolla.com/ out incase that floats your boat, Kate.

Don't know if the others would be interested.(see http://www.rock-a-rolla.com/backissues.htm) Actually I think Norman would like the bands it covers. GUAPO!!!!

I went for the 6 issue subscription for £15 + 2 free back issues.
The magazines covers loads of the bands I like that noone else does plus some bands that get some coverage but never front covers/main articles. Hopefully the new issue will arrive soon.

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 13:09 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, seriously.

Urg, I hate borrowing money, esp from people I've just met. But I went ahead and did it, and dude (of course) was totally cool about it. Three classes down, one to go. All fine so far, I just need to start a)start planning better and b)stop being so scattered, brain-wise while teaching. I do have these moments where I'm sort of flicking aimlessly through my notes looking for the next thing to talk about, while the students do their "let's all stare at the teacher" thing.

g00blar (gooblar), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 13:11 (nineteen years ago)

Also, have identified near-instantly the one total keener in each section, each very very eager to show off just how deeply they care about literature and how very very sophisticated their vocabulary is. I'm pretty sure they're gonna annoy me all term (they've each already hijacked a couple of discussions just to show off).

Green tea again. Back on the methadone.

Angel In Love With Her Own Pedals (kate), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 13:40 (nineteen years ago)

What the hell is green tea?

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 13:59 (nineteen years ago)

Tea that is green... uh, no, it's tea that has been dried naturally in the sun or something. It's supposed to be very healthy and good for you, hence why people drink it on detoxes.

it's lovely when it's served at Chinese restaurants. But I can never quite make it as nice. I think I leave it to seep too long.

Angel In Love With Her Own Pedals (kate), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 14:00 (nineteen years ago)

Is it jasmine? Try the brown rice green tea sometime, that's my favourite.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 14:05 (nineteen years ago)

Yes, it's got jasmine in it. I think I just let it seep too long, so it turns into a tannin bomb. Which is nice for tea that is going to get milk in it, but not nice for tea to be drunked plain.

Angel In Love With Her Own Pedals (kate), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 14:08 (nineteen years ago)

I wonder if a certain on-trial dictator likes Canadian comedy teams:

Saddam listened silently but lost his temper when a lawyer described Iraqi Kurdish rebels as freedom fighters. "You are agents of Iran and Zionism! We will crush your heads!" he shouted.

Is it one of those teas that you pour the water onto then start to drink immediately (so it's like drinking boiling water, in fact a lot like it), and then by the time you get to the bottom it's way too strong to finish?

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 15:21 (nineteen years ago)

Oh god, there goes another one. :-(

Have been chatting to a bloke on OKC who seems very interesting, have had some good conversations about physics and maths and folk music and all very good and very interesting stuffs.

And then he just dropped something in the last email that made me realise... "Shit, he's a Dogmatic Atheist."

And it's like... I'm not a Christian, but I'm not an Atheist, either. The only way to deal with those kind of arguments is just to live and let live. I don't care what you believe - if you believe in God, if you believe in the Flying Spaghetti Monster, or if you believe in Darwin, so long as you are able to accept and tolerate people who believe in other things.

And my experience of these things is that Dogmatic Atheists are often WORSE than Christians in NOT being able to accept and tolerate.

Angel In Love With Her Own Pedals (kate), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 15:56 (nineteen years ago)

It could've been worse. He may have been a dogmatic rockist or popist.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 09:20 (nineteen years ago)

If you have more than no bandwidth and diskspace, Koogy's YSI is the way to go. I can't stand Youtube's smeary effect.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 09:33 (nineteen years ago)

So Kate's been on radio and tv now. What next? A cinema ad?

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 09:42 (nineteen years ago)

The movies... :-)

Angel In Love With Her Own Pedals (kate), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 09:42 (nineteen years ago)

youtube's smeary effect is a function of the bitrate they use. the ysi was 400kbps i'm guessing theirs is half that. it didn't help that the bbc had put some kind of filter on the original footage, probably to make it look 'edgey'.

the laptop thing kinda makes me angry - they are inserting their content over other peoples'. some company in america offers you the ability to do this in real time, supposedly to enable you to replace adverts in the background with your own.

Koogy Yonderboy (koogs), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 09:43 (nineteen years ago)

lolol i saw kaet dancing in my computer screen HOW DO THEY DO THAT?

How-D everybody. i had a day off yesterday! hurrah!
i played Civ4 all day. amazing!

teh_kit (g-kit), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 09:43 (nineteen years ago)

Eh? I thought the laptop thing was clever and funny and well done. The only content that would have been there would have been AMP's page about "disgustingly underage boys" so I'm glad it was us dancing instead.

Angel In Love With Her Own Pedals (kate), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 09:46 (nineteen years ago)

Also the Shockwave/Flash video codec that they use is complete Arse, but it is by far and away the best way of making videos universal and integrated into the web page. Hopefully codec support within flash will improve as time goes on.

the laptop thing kinda makes me angry - they are inserting their content over other peoples'. some company in america offers you the ability to do this in real time, supposedly to enable you to replace adverts in the background with your own.

This is a very dull 3D DVE effect and has been possible in real time since at least the mid 90s.

is clever, yes, but evil, have seen it used to make it look like people are watching things they obviously aren't. (and by real time i mean in live footage. think i first read about it on slashdot a few years ago and the example they used was rebranding times square during NYE celebrations)
