Who in ILE was born in what year? When we've sorted it out we can work out by science which year was best (by adding up ILE postings ha).

Nick and Cabbage and me are all 1973 babies. Goo.

Tom, Tuesday, 5 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

1982: The year of the CD (according to HarperCollins "word of the year" yearly competition).

Who's the youngest here? More to the point, who's the oldest?

David., Tuesday, 5 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i'm a 60s baby! yay 1969.

Alan Trewartha, Tuesday, 5 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Youngest regular = Maria I think (still?). Oldest = Gale.

Tom, Tuesday, 5 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I - like an awful lot of us - was born in 1973.

Pete, Tuesday, 5 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

1983

Graham, Tuesday, 5 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

1973 was the year to be (born).

Dan Perry, Tuesday, 5 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

1968. Hrev-ouh-loo-shahn, etc.

Michael Jones, Tuesday, 5 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

1975. When 'Stand by your Man' was at number one. Cripes.

Emma, Tuesday, 5 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

1981. We should have a thread to post baby pictures.

Sarah, Tuesday, 5 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh god she's trying to turn it into SINSI TAH!

N., Tuesday, 5 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I was born on the EXACT DAY of the Manson 'Helter Skelter' murders. (Also, I looked up 'Your Birthday in History', and saw '9 August 1945, a nuclear bomb was dropped on Nagasaki')

dave q, Tuesday, 5 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It's scary how many Sinsitahrines there are around here. I've counted four already.

David, Tuesday, 5 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

FOUR? More like FOUR HUNDRED.

N., Tuesday, 5 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Don't say that, you're scaring me!

Fact: I joined sinister for about 2 weeks in 1997...

Nicole, Tuesday, 5 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I was born on May 1st 1968. I think there was a war on somewhere then. Which was cool.

DV, Tuesday, 5 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Or was it 1998? Whatever year Diana died, because I remember them all going on about that and it bored me silly.

My faulty '73 factory installed memory fails me here.

Nicole, Tuesday, 5 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

There are four sinister types on this thread alone, oop, no, 5 maybe.

chris, Tuesday, 5 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Another Mayday baby! Why didn't you say so on that other thread. Huzzah!

Nicole, why do you torment me so?

N., Tuesday, 5 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

1976 - Year of the Dragon!

jel, Tuesday, 5 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Das ist worrying, ja? Ja!

David, Tuesday, 5 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

1970.

I was a sinisterine (briefly) in 1998 and then resubscribed in May 2000 and have never looked back.

MarkH, Tuesday, 5 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I have never been a member of S_______.

Tom, Tuesday, 5 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

really? I thought you had????

chris, Tuesday, 5 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

April 5th 1979.

Anna, Tuesday, 5 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I thought that was someone pretending to be Tom. Did we ever find out who?

MarkH, Tuesday, 5 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I have never been a member of sinister either...though I nearly went to a met up thing around x-mas 1999 with some friends (don't know if it was sinister per se, just belle and sebastian). I think I have counted up to to 8 or 9 people from there (saw the photo album).

jel, Tuesday, 5 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

First I saw "Class of '73" & thought, yeah, that's for me, I did my 'A' Levels in that year!

Then Pete remarked "I - like an awful lot of us - was born in 1973"
Ulp. 17 year gap.

But I am on Sinister (& have been for nearly 4 and a half years)

David, Tuesday, 5 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Mark H is right - somebody pretending to be me joined! It was quite exciting, I heard about it from a suspicious Honey who had been alerted by Carsmile. But my own conscience is clear.

Tom, Tuesday, 5 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm not on Sinister any more. MENTALISTS. I also deleted IRC from the computer at home to keep me free from the anger inducing vomfest that is the #sinister chatroom. If you don't know what I'm on about, thank your lucky stars. I had such an argument with someone I was left shaking in rage.

Sarah, Tuesday, 5 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I knew about that, but I thought it was in the dim and distant past.

chris, Tuesday, 5 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

And anyway Nick I only want baby pictures cos I WAS SUCH A CUTE BABY! The last thing I want is for ILE to go all Sinister on my (and your) ASSES.

Sarah, Tuesday, 5 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ahem, the people on Sinister and on here of course are not mentalists ahem ahem.

Sarah, Tuesday, 5 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

thankyou Sarah, that needed saying.

chris, Tuesday, 5 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

1971. Nothing much happened that year.

Kim, Tuesday, 5 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't know what you're on about Starry and I want you to email me right now and tell all. You know the addressXoR. Also I have a proposition for some nightlife unless you and Mr T are still too poor this week.

Tom, Tuesday, 5 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Nicole is making it up! I've just looked back at the archives for the 3 1st August and 1 st Sept 1997 and the remarkable thing is that no one even mentions Princess Diana. They're just talking about the Pastels!

N., Tuesday, 5 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

April 10, 1977

Michael Bourke, Tuesday, 5 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Are you at work or at home? Strictly speaking I am too poor but I am walking halfway to work each day to save money so that can easily be beer money.

Eeep sorry Cabbage I didn't mean to offend if I was going that way - it's just that it makes me angry the way some people have been treated and... well let's just say that there was a time when if anyone had said to me 'it's just a mailing list' I would have laughed - and now I've reached the time where that's JUST what it is and it's a big, BIG relief.

Then again I am constantly in an existential crisis! What fung!

Sarah, Tuesday, 5 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I was not! I remember reading some boring emails about that (and admittedly some other baw-ring stuff) and thinking, if I wanted to hear about crap like that I would stick to reading Teen magazine's advice column...

But I guess it would have to have been an indie advice column so I was mistaken all the same.

Nicole, Tuesday, 5 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Count yerself another sinister kid, because here I am. Um, I was born in 1980 - year of the monkey.

Mandee, Tuesday, 5 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm at work - I wouldnt have been cryptic abt my email if it was home cos it's on the bottom of every post as attested by the mountain of share tips and teeny porn spam I wade through every evening.

Tom, Tuesday, 5 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

1973, year of the ox.

Samantha, Tuesday, 5 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

SEVENTY FREE!

sidethread. 73 is the year of the Ox- I know a story about how the chinese years got numbered - Rat comes before Ox. I haven't got a clue what happens after that. what I got told is that Buddha called all the animals and asked them to come to him, like a race. So Ox, being all strong and that, is making great headway and looks like he's going to win when, at the last, he comes to a river in which is the island where buddha sits. Ratty hitches a lift on Ox's shoulders, and hops off on the other side and so wins the race. I like this story cos I love all things Rat, but I'd like to know the rest of it. I am sure each animal has a story relating to where they came in the race. If anyone knows it I'd like to hear.

misterjones, Tuesday, 5 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I was born in 82. Which means I will be RINGLEADAH of YOUF to purge boomers and X-ers.

Tim, Tuesday, 5 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

1974 - year/eye of the tiger

Jonnie, Tuesday, 5 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Y'know, maybe I've unfairly tarnished Sinister's rep, because fanks to Nick's link my memory has been refreshed and it doesn't look like that was the list that annoyed me at all. But what list was it? I was on at least two others at the time and unsubscribed from them all when I was in a particularly snarky/fed up mood. I'm suspecting it was Pulp's list...

Nicole, Tuesday, 5 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

That crazy Chinese race in full.

N., Tuesday, 5 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

n, you are speedy and resourceful, neither of which are Ox traits. Have you been lying about your age?

thanks!

misterjones, Tuesday, 5 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I am a seventyfree boy, but I am a rat, what with being born in the first week of the year and everything.

chris, Tuesday, 5 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Nicole, may well have been Lipgloss. I belatedly joined that when I was bored one day and found it the most unpleasant place I have ever been on the interweb. This was long after Ned passed on the reins I believe.

N., Tuesday, 5 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Damn, '73 owns this board!

Dan Perry, Tuesday, 5 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

1975 for me too.

maura, Tuesday, 5 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Am i the only 1972-ite here. July 1st. Slade at No. 1.

1975, woop woop.

David Raposa, Tuesday, 5 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

ATEY-TOO! (1982. Year of the Nintendo.)

Mitch Lastnamewithheld, Tuesday, 5 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I hope you are collecting this data to record an A House 'Endless Time Wasted At Work' tribute record.

Sarah, Tuesday, 5 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

1976. Are jel and I the only seventy-siXoRs?

Sam, Tuesday, 5 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

1980.

Sterling Clover, Tuesday, 5 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Sarah, wouldn't he have to wait for our dates of death for that to work. Let's hope he doesn't get impatient and kill us all.

N., Tuesday, 5 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm in '79 all on my own too.

Anna, Tuesday, 5 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Another 1975.

RickyT, Tuesday, 5 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

'Patch' - 1973 till present. Wasters! But still employed! In Endless Toime! In Endless MEDIOCRITY.

i am a house, Tuesday, 5 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

No you're not.

Is Sinister an indie-pop mailing list?

sundar subramanian, Tuesday, 5 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

1971, folks.

Michael Daddino, Tuesday, 5 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Jeff W, Tuesday, 5 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

How do YOU know 'Sundar' *coughs*council flat*coughs*

i'm a house if i say i am, Tuesday, 5 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Sundar - it's the Belle & Sebastian list.

N., Tuesday, 5 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Could anyone calculate how many man-hours have been wasted on ILE since its inception? And could it then be measured in buses?

Tom, Tuesday, 5 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

You're all just babes in the woods. Looks like, besides Jeff W., I'm the old one.

Deadman, Tuesday, 5 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

You, Jeff, David Moore, Mark S., Dr. C and Gale. Any others over 40?

N., Tuesday, 5 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"wasted"

I walk away from this computer in disgust, Ewing.

(At 2 minutes to compose each post: 126733*(2/60)= 4224 hours writing. If twenty people spent 15 seconds reading each one: 20*126733*(15/3600)= 10561 hours reading. => 15000+ man hours consumed, or make up your own numbers)

Graham, Tuesday, 5 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

15 seconds reading each one? I think not.

N., Tuesday, 5 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I am not "over 40" Dastoor, you bastid! I treasure my remaining thirtysomething years.

Jeff W, Tuesday, 5 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i was so happy thinking i was gonna be the only 78. then JOSH had to come along.

jess, Tuesday, 5 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

don't think dr c = 40+ either

nickn is, but he is quite occasional: also frank kogan (ditto)

also nicole = 45-yr-old trucker called lars

mark s, Tuesday, 5 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Hey, yeah, I still got six years til I hit that mark. I still get carded too.

Deadman, Tuesday, 5 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Sorry for age debacle, everyone.

N., Tuesday, 5 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I was born in 1970.

DJ Martian, Wednesday, 6 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

1965.

The year Churchill died, Vietnam kicking off, Beatles and Britpop mkI at their peak, Motown, Sex Pistols on Bill Grundy, Ken Dodd at number one, Michael Caine looking good, Cathy come home.

Billy Dods, Wednesday, 6 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

1965 for me too. (creak, groan)

Norman Phay, Wednesday, 6 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

1967. I'm getting up there. Actually, I wish I was *up there*. Friday's only 2 days away.

Sean, Wednesday, 6 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

69 année érotique, born the day the archies topped the bill at altamont speedway and reggie unwisely entrusted concert security to the banana splitz under the misapprehension that they were kind and gentle like the wombles.

fritz, Wednesday, 6 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

1985. Also an ox year.

Maria, Wednesday, 6 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

that be 1971

Brian MacDonald, Wednesday, 6 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I thought I was going to be the only 78, then Josh AND Jess camer along. But that's ok. I am their fwiend.

There are about 15 ILXers who are/have been on Sinister, I think.

Ally C, Wednesday, 6 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

1967. The end of 1967, mind you.

Kerry, Wednesday, 6 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

wow, still only two 1976er's!

jel, Wednesday, 6 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

1981 here. I had no idea I was older than Tim.

Vinnie, Wednesday, 6 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

1971, yes, a prime year. Brian and I were born and the world trembled.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 6 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

nineteenseventynine

Jeff, Wednesday, 6 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Another 82.

Honda, Wednesday, 6 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Robin Carmody, Wednesday, 6 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

nineteen eighty-one, apparently.

richard john gillanders., Wednesday, 6 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yep, ole '57 for me. I think there is one occasional poster older than me by a year or so. (not Gayle).

nickn, Wednesday, 6 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yep, ole '57 for me. I think there is one occasional poster older than me by a year or so. (not Gayle). By the way, I'm a cock.

nickn, Wednesday, 6 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm in '79 all on my own too.

nope, i'm an august '79er.

di, Wednesday, 6 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Eight to tha zero, year of the Mandee, the Sterl, and Robin (and the Deege?). I have never been on Sinister but I lurked on alt.music.belle+sebastian for, oo, a fortnight. I can remember precisely nothing about it. Oh, I think one of emil.y's bandmates was on there, and there seemed to be worryingly many crossposting Blur obsessives and not much conversation.

I should go on #pavement IRC again, I go there twice every year, and on one of those occasions it's always empty and on the other I go, "Uh, yeah, I was on here a year ago... and a year before that, and..." and list about 2000 nicks I might have used. Exciting, huh? But IRC is bad, I shouldn't encourage myself really.

Rebecca, Wednesday, 6 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

1983!!

ethan, Wednesday, 6 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

1976, ha

Kris, Wednesday, 6 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Hey, SNAP! Robin C and I have matching birthdays. Where were you?

Alan T, Wednesday, 6 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

1980 = first appearance of DG.

DG, Wednesday, 6 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Proudly 1976. And also from S_______. Sarah's not kidding about the chatroom, btw--it's a drag. But my baby picture is adorable.

Pyth, Wednesday, 6 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

[By the way I heard Rebecca "Lo fi" Luckraft's name on the Peel show on Wednesday night as a winner of an entrance ticket for a Live Clinic show @ the BBC Studios.]

DJ Martian, Wednesday, 6 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

'73 / M / Sini / But not twee ;-)

C

Calumn, Wednesday, 6 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Indeed you did, DJM! Well identified. I am now wondering if perhaps this was foolish on the grounds that getting back will cost obscene amounts of money and I can see them next month anyway, but then if I'd just sat around wondering whether to go and see Herman Dune, Eska or Trumans Water instead (who are all in London over the next fortnight and who will possibly never visit Oxford) I would almost certainly end up not going to any of them instead. And it looks like I'll soon have a job again (argh) so I can afford to give entire days' wages to taxi drivers. Well, no, I can't, but at least I'll have wages to give to them. And I have slowly decided over the past few years that Clinic are (one of) my New Favourite Band(s) [*], and it'll be all small and cosy, presumably, and it'll be a room full of people who've heard of Pure Morning - since that was the competition question - so we can all shout irritatingly for "All The Guests Smile So Sweetly" and "Foxhole" until Ade B thwacks us all round the head with a melodica.

[* kiss of death, surely, since the reason I need new favourite bands is because all the old favourite bands became rubbish and/or split up. Usually on the album I bought a t-shirt advertising a week before hearing the cd itself.]

On the off-chance anybody from any of the relevant booking agencies googles and ends up here, bring Herman Dune, Eska and Trumans Water to Oxford. (Mmm, Trumans Water + I'm Being Good, mmmm.) And yeah, Eska did book a gig with various other Gringo/Damn You types at Oxford Point once but then they pulled out of the tour. Oh well, we still got the lovely Reynolds.

I appear to have strayed miles off-topic for far too many words, again. Sorry.

Rebecca, Wednesday, 6 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I am another year of the dragon baby

rosemary, Wednesday, 6 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

1973!

toraneko, Thursday, 7 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Think of it as an exclusive club, Jess. We can have smoking jackets and shit. And uh Ally C too.

Anyway I always thought you were like 30, Jess. Must be all the grousing.

Josh, Thursday, 7 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, since the other grey panthers have stepped up to the plate, I'll have to set the record straight. Here goes...

1961.

So, Nick I'm 40. Not 40 *plus*!!!

Dr. C, Thursday, 7 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

.1975.

bnw, Thursday, 7 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i was born in 1977, the year of that other jubilee and the name of that Ash album. if i have read correctly (cos i read this thread quite fast, i'm at work!) that makes me the only '77-er????

and for the record i have NEVER been on Sinister either, though quite a few people i have met get the impression that i have been.

katie, Thursday, 7 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Rebecca might be able to get those bands to come to Oxford. But will there be any venues left for them to play in?

MarkH, Thursday, 7 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

1974.

alext, Thursday, 7 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ewing = the Government! Collecting tabs on us to use against us on our forthcoming ruination day! That's the day that the ruination day. It was not December and it was not May it was 4th of April was the ruination day. The Great Emancipator took a bullet in the head. Casey Jones.

OK for what it's worth I am one day older than Andrew Ridgeley! And Mingus recorded "Black Saint and The Sinner Lady" two days before I was born.

And "Please Please Me" was number one!

It's a scandal, such a scandal . . .

Terry Shannon, Thursday, 7 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Are you Christine Keeler's secret lovechild? Or JFK's? Or both's? Did Keeler ever sleep with JFK? And if not, why not? So many questions, whispering voices.

N., Thursday, 7 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Year of the monkey, year of the Situationists. Do the maths yrselves.

suzy, Thursday, 7 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

1953?

Dr. C, Thursday, 7 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

25th of March 1983.

Ronan, Thursday, 7 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

This was long after Ned passed on the reins I believe.

And to clarify this long dead point -- yes. I started Lipgloss in 1995 with a slew of other lists but due to heavy traffic on the KUCI machine I had to give it up four months later. It has seen better days. Separations is the Pulp list I hang out on these days.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 7 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

a rather rare vintage of 74 (only alex and jonnie upthread i think). Look there are clearly 7 squillion sinisterines on here, although the vast majority are ex or never post (to sinister) anymore. plus the fact that british + indie + interweb = sinister at some point, or at least are good friends/in a band/etc with a sinisterine (i was going to make this a thread a la the GOFF one, but never got round to it). although this does give me an idea for another one...

CarsmileSteve, Thursday, 7 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

1981. That makes three, I think.

And I was on Sinister for 1 (one!) day.

emil.y, Thursday, 7 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

1983. today, actually.

this makes me fifth, and the only girl of the bunch.

nancy b., Friday, 8 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

There was a drunk bloke with my name on Sinister (I understand he showed up at one of those ATP things) but he was nothing to do with me.

Tim, Friday, 8 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah, and the pictures look nothing like you neither Tim.

1977 the year everything good stopped. not really. but consider this, in the spring, Star War. By middle of August, Elvis and Groucho were dead dead dead. Never ever to be heard from again.

2 August 1975. 1975 was the bottom of the baby bust (or whatever it's called), the year the fewest babies were born. So I'm a somewhat rare vintage; sip me gently.

Wow! I had been wondering if somewhere on this forum there was some sort of birthday listing, but now I have my answer! Or at least as good a one as I'll get. I *will* be jotting down all your birthdays as soon as I can, because I'm a freak like that and I like giving out birthday wishes to as many people as I can.

Oh yes, and I'm another "year of the Islamist revolution in Iran" baby, even though it was at the very tail end of that year and had I been born another 72 hours later I'd have been a "year of the Winter Olympics in which the underdog U.S. hockey team beat the heavily favored Soviet Union hockey team" baby. Difference!

Yeah. Babies were popping up everywhere until '73, but reading about some horn-rimmed govt official going to jail every week must have killed libidos in late '73 and early '74. Then once Nixon left, everyone relaxed and became horny again in late '74.

But it's such an inbetweeny year for music. Even my beloved Tom Waits broke off his album-a-year tradition to wait for 1983's Swordfishtrombones.

October 23, 1974. Yes, it seems Tantrum and I were born on exactly the same day.

Odd.

I find, increasingly, that I'm part of an in-between generation that:

a) is old enough to have grown up on our parents' classic rock records
b) is young enough to have embraced house, techno, hip-hop, indie, grunge, punk, etc.
(Check all that apply.)
c) is generally overeducated and underpaid
d) is the prototype for a certain kind of "all-about-me" middle-class cluelessness that is even more prevalent in our younger brothers and sisters

... all of which would explain why I hang out online as much as I do.

Anyway, cheers, Pears.

Aug 30, the 82!

I am so glad that there are not too many born after that. Those who are, you make me feel old.

I'm exactly the same age as Andy Roddick, to the day. I'm not proud of that.

I'm slightly disturbed by the fact that half the people on ILX were born in the same year as me and seem to live in the same part of north London as me.

Do those of you born in 1975 and after claim to remember the seventies?

Kind of sort of. I don't remember the decade, but I remember some things from the 70s -- I remember waiting in line for gasoline, and riding my Big Wheel around the driveway while they talked about the hostages on the radio, although I guess that was actually 1980 -- and of course, in the early 80s the half of daytime television programming that wasn't soap operas was made up of syndicated 70s television. So I grew up watching The Courtship of Eddie's Father and The Hardy Boys and whatnot.

And my parents were in their late 30s when they adopted me, so the kids I spent most of my time with when I was very young (my parents' friends' kids) were all much older than me, so I was exposed to a lot of Shaun Cassidy posters and got hand-me-down Keep On Truckin' T-shirts and whatnot.

I have determined that 21 Jump Street occupies the same part of my 1979 girlfriend's television-viewer consciousness that Knight Rider occupies in mine.

(Like there's a We Fight Crime With Style And Haircuts niche that both shows evolved to fill, see. Hello, Fastlane -- sorry, this pond's been fished clean.)

14th August 1980, hello monkeys. Born 33 years after the birth of Indian Independence. This year Czeslaw Milosz died on my birthday. Last year the power went out in half the US.

I don't remember a single thing about the '70s. How could I? I spent less than a week in that decade. My earliest rememberances took place in the very early '80s, but I only really started remembering a ton of stuff in vivid detail right around '85 - '86.

Oh, and 1986?!?!?! I used to babysit kids who were born in '86!!

(Ha ha ha ha, I know it's such a comparatively tiny gap age-wise, but, um, damn, I'm not used to the whole "I used to babysit kids your age and now here you are, all grown-up and stuff" thing.)
