the ups logo isn't horrible, it just looks more like cheap cgi than a real logo.

ram jam holder (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 7 October 2006 02:00 (nineteen years ago)

you're old. that's what real logos look like now. we have the technology and printing is cheap.

B-but Aunt Jemima is shapely and thoroughly bangable. If the guilty liberals replace her with an assless white girl, I'll have nothing to masturbate to at the breakfast table!

That old one makes me sing "I'm gonna getcha with the Kodak Disc/It's my kinda camera, it's not gonna miss..."etc. So perhaps it's good that the changed considering how shite that camera was.

we had a thread like this on ball team uniforms, right? i'm just reminding the blue abortion that was Detroit's uniform for years, or when they tried to add a tiger to the other detroit logo.

Still, if nothing else, trying to change the thing reminds you of what you liked about the classic version in the first place.

The Vintner's Lipogram (OleM), Saturday, 7 October 2006 14:47 (nineteen years ago)

Oh yeah! I saw that Payless a couple weeks ago and was thrown for a loop. It's like they threw away their entire image in the desperate hope that this one would seem more upscale or something. And it doesn't.

Butt Dickass (Dick Butkus), Saturday, 7 October 2006 14:49 (nineteen years ago)

i'm guessing the way this happens is through design by committee. which guarantees utter blandness. old logos tended to be made by one person - ie nike logo designed my student making $2 an hour.

the first one suggests train travel if you think back to some of those deco rail cars where the front looks like the front of an ocean liner (and the grey bit is the tracks, i guess)

ram jam holder (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 8 October 2006 17:14 (nineteen years ago)

i'm guessing the way this happens is through design by committee. which guarantees utter blandness. old logos tended to be made by one person - ie nike logo designed my student making $2 an hour.

This observation is very OTM, however, the story I heard was that when Phil Knight was in his selling-shoes-out-the-back-of-his-car days, he noticed a co-worker doodling on a note pad. He said that he liked the little soosh design he had drawn and offered to buy the "rights" to it for something like $35.

Come Into My Layer (Old Lunch), Sunday, 18 November 2012 19:28 (thirteen years ago)

plus with the arby's thing the issue for me is that the hat is three-dimensional and rendered but the text logo is flat- what is their point? what's that about? is there some hat-as-signified / corporation-as-signifier thing going on? whatever semiotics, it mostly reminds me that a friend of mine had the theory that looking at the Arby's sign was bad luck- if we drove by certain stripmalls he would suddenly say, in a serious voice, "don't look at the hat"

Now in his honor I intone that warning everytime I see an Arby's.

those were actually incandescent light bulbs for many of the animated parts, which were U&K. The cost of keeping the signs lit is cited by the company as one reason they were removed.

An environmental disaster mind you, but it could be replicated nowadays using low-power LEDs for less than the fluorescent tubes in the new signs cost to run.

Couldn't get past those clever front desk clerks though:

In California, a network of independent hotel operators began making referrals of each other to travelers. This “referral system” consisted of phone calls between one desk operator and another.

I mean, now that's how you make a network! Operators calling each other from their respective desks.

Also, BW tried to pass itself off as a co-op (instead of a franchisor) until the NORTH DAKOTA SUPREME COURT stepped in and knocked off the funny business.

Flipside of this thread: corporations keeping absolutely terrible logos around forever and ever. If the Container Store logo was good, it'd be dope that they've stuck by it, but somehow they have chosen to stay loyal to the most incredibly bland thing possible, all their branding makes them look like a drug store that got a peppy refresh in 1990, and presumably sells tupperware and the like, even as the actual contents of their stores seem to be going for a slightly stylish "mini-IKEA" of semi-designy shelving, desks, and miscellaneous housewares.

It is a kidney bean, according to their trademark:

Description of Mark:
(3) Illustration: Drawing or design which also includes word(s)/ letter(s)/number(s). The mark consists of a stylized outline of a kidney bean containing a stylized image of a man in overalls leaning against a stylized barrel, which appears within the kidney bean outline to the right of the man. To the right of the barrel, and inside the larger kidney bean outline appears the stylized wording "CRACKER BARREL OLD COUNTRY STORE" with the "CRACKER" wording connecting to the kidney bean outline through the top right portion of the "K" and appearing in large font above the "BARREL" wording, which itself appears in large font above the "OLD COUNTRY STORE" wording.

Cracker Barrel shed almost $100 million in market value after its stock plunged Thursday following the release of a new logo. The new design eliminates a longstanding drawing of an overall-clad man leaning against a barrel, in favor of a cleaner logo featuring just the chain's name.

Some longtime Cracker Barrel fans took to social media to express disappointment with the company's new logo, with some calling on the chain to change it back.

yeah if anything this is a KFC-like attempt to approach something more generic, shed of any associations with any specific place or any specific past. i never thought about it, but the old logo was one of the last vestiges of 1970s restaurant branding/design, with all that visual excess and clutter. TGI Friday's and Pizza Hut's slashed theirs down years ago. Apparently Steak & Ale still have theirs, although that's partly because they went bankrupt in 2008 and only have one or two restaurants still in existence.

I'm definitely going to pay closer attention to the t-shirts in the gift shop next time.

Celebrate Halloween with Cracker Barrel’s Spooktacular Collection

I mean, it's not just me, right? I'm not going to point it out, but it can't just be me.

Cracker Barrel fans

didn't realize this was a thing

Check out autobiographies from the various Ramones. Cracker Barrel was a rare place they could all agree on while touring (between NYC & Florida anyway). Johnny grumpily ate gas station sardines in the Cracker Barrel parking lot while considering the others to be wasting their food stipend inside; Dee Dee hid drugs in their favoured Cracker Barrels because he could pick them up on the way back, and they had a major band bust up there at least once, iirc amplified by a changed menu item. I never pass a Cracker Barrel without thinking about them.

Ramones tour manager Monte Melnick:

On the road we'd discover certain restaurants that we liked and try to find them along the way. Cracker Barrel and Bob Evans were two of our favorites. We discovered with Cracker Barrel that, if you were a known band, and usually all the waiters and dishwashers knew us, you can get free meals in exchange for some autographed photos. I'd bring along stacks of promotional photos for this very purpose. I would get the national directories and in the morning we'd plot where the closest Cracker Barrel was.

I want to bring up a different design crime. This logo:

Somebody, who was presumably paid to try hard to do good work, robbed their client. On the other hand, I have no reason to GAF about the client. The logo still makes me mad. 45 seconds of "work"

lol, it looks suspiciously like they forgot to switch on the layers that contained a happy cartoon dog and farmer on the right-hand side.

Right?! There's no apparent reason for the text to be off-center; the blob looks like a tomato, which isn't dog food; and the text looks like the first free font somebody found online (except the lowercase Es and Rs are different from each other, so I guess this is hand-scrawled by a right-handed person using their left hand, and the g looks like a 9).

I'd been thinking about how people don't seem to be embarrassed by typos or malaprops as much maybe because it signals that you're human? So maybe incompetence is a deliberate aesthetic? Like if this is for a dogfood company, it signals that the dogfood is human-made slop, not machine-made slop.

xxxp the idea that there may still be drugs stashed in various Cracker Barrels courtesy of Dee Dee Ramone makes me want to actually visit one (with my dog, of course)

There's no apparent reason for the text to be off-center

Also, the designer probably presented several versions, with the text in different positions, and someone decided this one was the way to go.

...with the reasoning that it makes it look interesting... and here we are talking about it :/

Yeah, I don't want to give this crap too much oxygen — especially since I hijacked a thread whose remit it doesn't really fit to gripe about it. But I see ads for this product every day on a phone game I otherwise enjoy, and had to have a little blowup.

Noob Layman (WmC), Friday, 22 August 2025 17:17 (eight months ago)

You're not hijacking nothin.

In fact, I'm a bit tickled that someone offered whatever that is above to a designer and said, "What can you do with this?" and the response was, "I dunno, something shittier?"
