Yeah, but, um, you see ... that big jar just has a little left and you can't get to it 'cause then you end-up with all of the stale mayo on your knuckles (from where you've gripped the knife/spatula) so I went ahead and opened the new jar, hoping that the roomie wouldn't notice the new one and get stale mayo on his knuckles, while I use the fresh stuff. yeah that prego is better, i'll readily admit that, but i've found that a lot of the time, when you freeze the dead kitten body, the dead kitten flesh can tend to get frostbitten, and that can really impair the full kitten flesh flavor for when you finally do BBQ it, put it in a stew, whatever

Noilly Prat's a brand of vermouth -- I don't drink martinis, so there aren't a lot of vermouth drinks I make (a Manhattan or Negroni once in a while), but it's a cheap cocktail ingredient and I use it in some sauces, ragu, and usually meatballs.

But yeah, the name. It's not like "I'll have a Noilly Prat Negroni" makes it sound any less like you're talking about a Muppet.

it's interesting how culture comes through in fridges - like, I can instantly tell that's a canadian fridge (content-wise, even w/o cats in it) and the 'foreign' fridges have this weird uncanniness to them, like things aren't quite right there.

Yep -- we bought the condo just before my niece was born, and she turns three on Wednesday. Mind you, my mother furnished the place and I grew up with an avocado-green kitchen and beige Datsun. I'm not sure her aesthetic has changed a lot.

Coming in two months: new fridge pics, as we're buying a second fridge. I'll try to dress it up for a photo, put the pretty preserves up front, etc.

The walk-in pantry was one of the things that dazzled me when we looked at this house. (Too bad we didn't ask more questions about the rest of the house.) We managed to squeeze our chest freezer in there, but only by taking the lid off of it first.

Not a whole tree, but it is a Christmas wreath tucked behind the freezer with some other decorations.

PP, Mormons wouldn't have that much beer and booze in their pantries. We do have a fair amount of Jello, though. (My wife bought every bit of it.)

Not that there's anything wrong with Jell-O. I just went through a phase when that was most of what I would/could eat. Don't ask.

The Cheerios are mine, and the extensive collection of teas, mostly herbal. Also most of the canned tomatoes, which I love to eat with pasta. I'm also guilty of the hot chocolate mix, the instant oatmeal and the orange juice in the freezer.

Otherwise, the buck stops otherwhere. :)

I occasionally entertain the notion of not buying any new groceries except absolute essentials until I've worked my way through everything in the pantry, but we'd be eating things like barbecue sauce smoothies before too long, and, well, no thanks. And Coca-Cola! I know I've mentioned it a lot, but it's actually cheaper to fix up a Coke-and-Starbuck's than it is to buy a Coke Blak. Though it's less acceptable for breakfast, too.

I really dig that stuff. After going through a bottle of it, I picked up some Kahlua and was amazed at how syrupy-sweet it tasted in comparison.

The bright orange stuff in the container is the frozen pulp of a Hachiya persimmon. I was told they can be eaten like ice cream. I got about 20 pounds of them from a friend's tree and ate fresh or dried the rest.

It may be H&D, I think I acquired that through a gift basket deal. I don't normally buy H&D. And I couldn't tell you how it compares taste-wise with more common jams because I don't eat them very often.

As for the persimmons, I just eat them straight, like dried apricots or peaches. They are somewhat tougher than those, so it's usually a whole piece at once or rip a large piece in two before eating.

It is Harry and David preserves. Plum variety (I was at work for the previous answer so I couldn't check). I tried a bit just now and the sugar has crystallized some, but it still tastes fine. The jar behind it is some fig preserves that I made myself from some scrounged figs (neighbor of a friend).

(And I'm bummed thet nobody commented on the jack-o-lantern in my fridge.)

Ah - I've warmed the H&D plum preserves and served them over lemon pound cake. As far as brands go, I've had reasonably good luck with their jams/jellies/preserves and they make some wonderful butters - not just apple and pear butter, but a killer pumpkin one and a delectible persimmon flavor, too. (I like the fruit butters on french toast.)

I'm not a big fan of figs - probably 'cause my mother loves them and every year she made fig jam and that's what I'd get on my pb&j when all I ever wanted was orange marmalade *sigh*.

I'll comment on the jack-o-lantern (actually meant to but then was distracted) - it's a rather interesting looking fellow - may I ask why he's being preserved for posterity?

Also, we just got a new fridge (in the kitchen behind our shop). I wished I had *pre-tested* it at the shop cause I'm not happy with the small freezer. It's bigger than the prev one but still not big enough. And I noticed how much those American fridges are. DAMN! That said, I really crave for one (in our house). One day... oh yes ONE DAY.
