Nathalie and I thought we should have a new thread.

Sam rides the beat like a bicycle (Molly Jones), Friday, 10 November 2006 16:53 (nineteen years ago)

And here's my last question from the old one:

advice please:

I bought two balls of worsted weight to make a scarf for my grandmother but I don't think it will be enough. I have a couple of skeins of a darker, matching shade in bulky lamb's pride. how can I combine the two for one scarf? I was thinking of doing something lengthwise with a few rows in the lighter weight then a few rows in the bulky weight. Is this possible? will I have to knit separately and then graft together? (hope not.)

Sam rides the beat like a bicycle (Molly Jones), Friday, 10 November 2006 16:53 (nineteen years ago)

molly says:
I made this scarf from a bunch of different yarns using the drop stitch (i.e. *k1, wrap yarn over again and then k1*, next row: just *k1, drop the extra loop, k1*). I did k1 on other rows, wherever I felt like it. I hope this makes sense. I don't have a picture of it currently, but I can get one this evening. It makes for a fun, lace-y scarf. Oh, and it helps to make it fairly wide too, so it can be folded over for maximum warmth.

I would like to see a picture if possible. how did you join yarns of different weight/gauges?

Sam rides the beat like a bicycle (Molly Jones), Friday, 10 November 2006 16:57 (nineteen years ago)

I just changed colors, as one would normally do. The gauge change was noticeable in some spots, and in other spots, not so much. It added character. My friend in Seattle loved the scarf so much, that I had to make him one (sidenote: he's a total gay, and probably isn't an ideal scarf for straight men due to its lacey, hippie-dippy nature).

molly d (mollyd), Friday, 10 November 2006 17:00 (nineteen years ago)

Could you do something with the bulky creating a zigzag up the middle? Or use it as a couple of waves in this? http://knitty.com/ISSUEwinter04/PATTwavy.html

Use the bulky for a crocheted border ala http://www.knitty.com/ISSUEfall02/PATTfizz.html ?

This scarf combines thick and thin with fun loops: http://www.knitty.com/ISSUEwinter02/PATTloopy.html

this pattern specifically calls for lots of different yarn gauges and textures:

patita (patita), Friday, 10 November 2006 18:50 (nineteen years ago)

thanks for the links. i was actually considering that wavy knitty one.

i'm just worried about switching yarns when the gauges will be so different. dunno, guess I'm just going to have to give it a try.

Sam rides the beat like a bicycle (Molly Jones), Friday, 10 November 2006 18:53 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, do a little bit as a gauge swatch, maybe on a needle size that's inbetween what's called for on either yarn? It could look really nice.

patita (patita), Friday, 10 November 2006 20:29 (nineteen years ago)

Sam, here's the scarf I was talking about. I was inspired to make it after seeing Jay McCarroll's scarf (Project Runway -- Season 1). It's just bunged together. Also, Stella decided she wanted in on the photos, and I didn't have the heart to move her.

You can see where the gauge varies here:

molly d (mollyd), Friday, 10 November 2006 21:03 (nineteen years ago)

thanks. .. (and nice sock monkey sheets!)

I'll probably try swatching the drop stitch thing and see what I think. I don't trust my design skills yet. . .

Sam rides the beat like a bicycle (Molly Jones), Friday, 10 November 2006 21:06 (nineteen years ago)

Yay! New thread with supah doopah koolio title! :-D

I have started another project. Easy, I hope and so it seemed: a *simple hat* (from that Debbie Bliss book I have). It SEEMED easy, like I said, but then I realized that it wasn't so much. I took another type of yarn so I had to recalculate how many stitches I would need and then I had to calculate how I would do the decreases. God, I thought I wouldn't need maths and logic after finishing high school and dropping out of uni. :-) Anyway, I already knitted 11 rows. Another... hmm... 50 rows to go. Instead of that strange umbilical type of thing on top I'm gonna do a pompom. Why? Because that's what I got the other day: a frigging POMPOM maker. :-)

After that I'm gonna do that cardigan, so Lady Starry I'll need your help! :-)

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Friday, 10 November 2006 22:11 (nineteen years ago)

I have those sheets, molly!

tokyo nursery school: afternoon session (rosemary), Saturday, 11 November 2006 00:17 (nineteen years ago)

the monkey sheets! my sister got them for me for a birthday present. i am in love with the cotton t-shit sheets.

molly d (mollyd), Saturday, 11 November 2006 17:48 (nineteen years ago)

um, t-shiRt. i haven't had coffee yet.

molly d (mollyd), Saturday, 11 November 2006 17:51 (nineteen years ago)

ATTN NATH: I've found the issue of Simply Knitting w/ the hideous orange jumper on the cover and am READY TO HELP with baby cardie queries - so, erm, how can I be of assistance? Email me if you want, the address on here is g00d.

Bhumibol Adulyadej (Lucretia My Reflection), Monday, 13 November 2006 19:09 (nineteen years ago)

Hey, does anyone know of a site that has some examples of crocheted borders. I'm doing a cable scarf that is too narrow. I need to find a (masculine) border to widen it out with afterwards or frog it and start over with a double cable.

Sam rides the beat like a bicycle (Molly Jones), Thursday, 16 November 2006 16:16 (nineteen years ago)

Okay, Miss Lady Starry St*r I will do just that!

I made a gauge in 5 CM STUPIDLY and of course I discovered that I should've done the traditional TEN CM because I had way too many stitches (10 sts too much for 124 sts or something). So I have cast on 114 sts instead of 124 now. Question all (I'll email you when I have specific problems/qs): do I just follow the size larger (which is for 114 sts) or will I have to make larger armholes?

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Thursday, 16 November 2006 16:37 (nineteen years ago)

Hey Sam, I found this site that has video tutorials of various crochet stitches. It does go into the "fancy stitch" realm, but I'm not sure if it has what you're looking for.

http://www.nexstitch.com/v_crochet_videos.html

molly d (mollyd), Thursday, 16 November 2006 16:44 (nineteen years ago)

xpost to myself: i mean size SMALLER. god, my english ist rub.

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Thursday, 16 November 2006 16:51 (nineteen years ago)

Actually I was at knitting meet yesterday and one of the gurls was making Nath's very own jacket! She is quite new to knitting though and was suffering from dropped stitches problem but she seems more confident about it now, hooray!

Er well if you're following the larger size for making the body then yeah follow the larger size for the sleeves unless I'm misunderstanding you!

When I get home I'll take a picture of the progress so far on ULTRA-SCARF!

Bhumibol Adulyadej (Lucretia My Reflection), Thursday, 16 November 2006 16:52 (nineteen years ago)

thanks for the link molly. I think I might just rip and widen the pattern. i've never crocheted much onto knitting and would have to do a different yarn, blah blah. probably quicker to start over.

Sam rides the beat like a bicycle (Molly Jones), Thursday, 16 November 2006 18:36 (nineteen years ago)

Xpost: you're kidding me! That gives me hope! :-) I just figure that I jumped into the deep knitting pool without a board instead of knitting small items (if that makes any sense). I just have to do these big difficult projects trying to learn a million different things at once instead of doing these dish cloths and whatnot. That said, I tried to remember the different cast-on methods we learned in class and I can't fucking remember AT ALL. I know I have to use a thread and needle. HAR HAR Actually bummah I'm stupido. :-(

If I ever head over to London - which I will god damn it and not too far off - I ask you (yes YOU) where I can find the bestest yarn. :-)

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Thursday, 16 November 2006 19:52 (nineteen years ago)

nath, get the vogue reference book if you don't already have it. i use it to remind myself of stuff all the time.

Sam rides the beat like a bicycle (Molly Jones), Thursday, 16 November 2006 20:06 (nineteen years ago)

oh yeah i have that book! i also need a lot of other knitting books! stuff that's on my to buy list (@ amazon):

Knitter's Almanac: Projects for Each Month of the Year - Elizabeth Zimmermann; Paperback
In The Miso Soup - Ryu Murakami; Paperback
450 Knitting Stitches: Vol. 1 (Harmony Guides) - Harmony Guide; Paperback
Whores: An Oral Biography of Perry Farrell and "Jane's Addiction" - Brendan Mullen;
Finishing Techniques for Handknitters - Jane Crowfoot; Paperback

Keep in mind, some of these books are NOT knit related. Seriously, any of you girls have any of these books?

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Thursday, 16 November 2006 20:13 (nineteen years ago)

Whores: An Oral Biography of Perry Farrell and "Jane's Addiction" - Brendan Mullen;

ok this threw me.

Sam rides the beat like a bicycle (Molly Jones), Thursday, 16 November 2006 20:14 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, I like the trash, oh yes I do. Kinda silly considering the fact I never bought a JA record in my life. :-)

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Thursday, 16 November 2006 20:16 (nineteen years ago)

The Readers Digest Guide to Needlework!! I cannot recommend it enough! Er, perhaps hard to get in foreign though, how are your charity shops for English language craft books?!

Bhumibol Adulyadej (Lucretia My Reflection), Thursday, 16 November 2006 20:28 (nineteen years ago)

Ah fuck it, I'll just order it from Amazon as well!

Charity shops? Wot r they? Seriously, I hardly have time to shop so I just order it from Amazon. I know it's stupid as my knitting teacher said charity shops sell lots of needles (and books maybe?) ULTRA cheap.

Ok, off to knit some more on that cardigan and also order that ReadersDigestGuide. :-)

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Thursday, 16 November 2006 20:30 (nineteen years ago)

Has anyone tried the ripple stitch?

http://cache.lionbrand.com/cgi-bin/faq-search.cgi?store=/stores/eyarn&faqKey=286

I have abandoned the hippy scarf I was going to make for my mother and shall attempt a scarf out of this.

It looks fun!

molly d (mollyd), Friday, 17 November 2006 04:29 (nineteen years ago)

Wow, that looks really nice. Not too difficult, but it loks all fancy!

I have little patience for scarves, but I can bust out hats like mad.

patita (patita), Friday, 17 November 2006 04:49 (nineteen years ago)

I forgot how to yarn over properly without getting those dumb little holes. So, last night was spent cursing my existence and refusing to consult reference materials.

molly d (mollyd), Friday, 17 November 2006 14:40 (nineteen years ago)

isn't a yarn over supposed to make a hole?

I like that stitch but yeah for a scarf I have to have some change up. I think I'm going to try and do a simple lace for my grandmother's instead of trying to mix up the two different yarns.

Sam rides the beat like a bicycle (Molly Jones), Friday, 17 November 2006 14:42 (nineteen years ago)

I am currently printing out the free version of BEETON'S BOOK OF NEEDLEWORK.
You can download it for FREE.

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Friday, 17 November 2006 14:42 (nineteen years ago)

Oh yeah, I was asking my employee how much I need to practice on lace making. She said TWO HOURS per day. I can't do that! I thought that was a ridiculous amount but then I realized I do knit for two hours per days SOMETIMES (read: a lot). :-)

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Friday, 17 November 2006 14:43 (nineteen years ago)

yeah yarn over is a way to increase and is meant to make holes, used for lace work.

I finsihed the first sock fro my grandpa's xmas present

tokyo nursery school: afternoon session (rosemary), Friday, 17 November 2006 14:45 (nineteen years ago)

I had such a hard time doing the M1 one like the teacher taught us. I could do it *my* way though. I knew WHAT I was doing wrong but never did it properly. haha

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Friday, 17 November 2006 14:46 (nineteen years ago)

If Nath would provide a link, that would be interesting, yes?

I am staying in to knit tonight, because I am broke. See ALL NIGHTS FOR REST OF MONTH arrghh :(

Bhumibol Adulyadej (Lucretia My Reflection), Friday, 17 November 2006 14:47 (nineteen years ago)

Wait, I thought Stitch n' Bitch mentioned a way so you don't get holes. Or maybe I'm talking pure nonsense. My apartment is a MESS and I can't find my reference books. The swatch on that link does not have any noticeable holes, making me think I can do the same.

SARAH. I am going to go shopping for your yarn this weekend!

molly d (mollyd), Friday, 17 November 2006 15:10 (nineteen years ago)

oh shit, i did but didn't use the html properly!

http://www.gutenberg.org/etext/15147

There!

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Friday, 17 November 2006 15:18 (nineteen years ago)

Cheers Nath! I will have a look later!

Molly - YO is definitely for making holey increases, there baint no two ways about it, but sometimes I suppose it is more noticable than others! Kfb or doing the pick up the 'ladder' increasey things will do you if you are bothered about holes.

Also HOORAY FOR THE YARN! *beam* I have your book to post as well! But I probably can't send it til next week now - but it is... in hand!

Bhumibol Adulyadej (Lucretia My Reflection), Friday, 17 November 2006 15:24 (nineteen years ago)

Oh! That's right. I'm thinking of picking up the ladder-y bit. I have only had one cup of coffee, and it shows.

Thanks for setting me straight, ladies.

Yes! Yarn! I'll email in a bit about it.

molly d (mollyd), Friday, 17 November 2006 15:29 (nineteen years ago)

Oh yes, Yarn Over is used for button holes, no?

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Friday, 17 November 2006 15:41 (nineteen years ago)

http://images.amazon.com/images/P/1883010136.01._AA240_SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg

get this book! it is small and full of how to do different increases and decreases.

(the index isn't that helpful tho)

tokyo nursery school: afternoon session (rosemary), Friday, 17 November 2006 17:52 (nineteen years ago)

I said I'd take photos. Sorry for poor quality but I was running late so took these in a rush whilst attempting to leave house:

Bhumibol Adulyadej (Lucretia My Reflection), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 11:07 (nineteen years ago)

xxpost that book looks great! i'll order it next month. :-)

I showed the dress to the teacher and she said it was good. At least the collar. The seaming she (thankfully!) didn't look at. Next week we're gonna learn how to seam. HURRAH!

This week we learned to that ribbony type of scarf. I can't find a pic of it online. It's knitted ribbons and you have to knit through the back of the stitch (which is basically just a needle gone through the fabric) and knit it. Anyone know this? Two women came up to me at the end of the lesson gasping how quickly I knitted my scarf. I haven't finished it but I did do 3/4 of it. Quicker than the teacher told us it would take. Guess I'm not as crap as I thought I was.

Starry, I'll probably be emailing you this week for directions in re to the matinee cardigan. :-D

I'm knitting the sleeves of the sweater for class. And do the collar. And then seam it.

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 11:36 (nineteen years ago)

If I send you my sweater pieces can you seam them please?

I'm doing a couple of scarves right now, one is looking really nice. will try to do pics today.

Sam rides the beat like a bicycle (Molly Jones), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 14:16 (nineteen years ago)

My next adventure will be learning to doubleknit. I understand it in theory, it's just a matter of casting it on and keeping track of the yarn (hahaha).

Still working up the nerve to tackle a big project like a sweater, though there have been a few in Interweave Knits that have made my teeth sweat.

patita (patita), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 16:57 (nineteen years ago)

xpost: No problem! :-)

Just got back from the shop to buy more yarn. I'll be doing that ribbony type scarf for my mom and mother in law. 36 euros in total! FUCK. :-)

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 16:59 (nineteen years ago)

The ripple stitch (with the YO) is turning out really nicely. I'll be finishing it up on the plane on Thursday morning.

Knitting needles haven't been banned again on planes, have they?

molly d (mollyd), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 17:13 (nineteen years ago)

I was able to take a pair of size 7 aluminums on a flight in October. They confiscated my toothpaste, but not the deadly skewers.

patita (patita), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 17:29 (nineteen years ago)

Toothpaste, no!
Pointy metal objects, okay!

I have one of those yarn cutters that you can wear on a necklace. I may bust that out for the flight.

molly d (mollyd), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 17:40 (nineteen years ago)

i have one of those too but it sucks! does your suck too Molly or am I just dumb?

Sam rides the beat like a bicycle (Molly Jones), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 17:54 (nineteen years ago)

Mine works really well, actually. It's just really ugly. You also look like a lunatic when trying to bring yarn up to your neck to cut it.

They have a proper name, which I can't remember right now. My friend loves the antique ones which are really pretty. Mine, not so much.

molly d (mollyd), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 17:57 (nineteen years ago)

oh, maybe it is just "yarn cutter."

really ugly, but its blade is really sharp.

http://www.yarnmarket.com/yarn/Accessories-Yarn_Cutter_Pendant-1178.html

molly d (mollyd), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 18:00 (nineteen years ago)

that's the exact one I have but I swear it's more like "yarn sawing" rather than "cutting". Either my blade is defective or I am.

sewing today, not good.

Sam rides the beat like a bicycle (Molly Jones), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 18:08 (nineteen years ago)

Oh no! Mine works just fine. It's probably the yarn saw wheel, Sam, not you.

I'm taking a half day of vacation tomorrow because I need to sew like the devil. I have the fabric for an apron for my dad (he doesn't usually use aprons, but he's just being a cute dad that will happily receive anything I make for him -- plus, he's swedish and it's Hagar the Terrible cartoon fabric!), but I can't find the pattern pieces! My craft / computer room is a total mess. But, I think I can easily whip out an apron in a few hours.

Oh! And I have to finish the I-cord for my sister's plastic bag purse that was supposed to be done AGES AGO.

CRAFTING STRESS.

molly d (mollyd), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 18:11 (nineteen years ago)

Yes, there is a serious crunch on to get projects done. I've been working on stuff for a while already, but things keep cropping up! I could joke that this is why I just gave notice at my job ;)

I've got half a baby blanket and a whole one left to do, and I'm already trying to figure out how to make the next one take less time. Whee!

patita (patita), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 22:32 (nineteen years ago)

!!!

we must knit-fap soon so you can fill me in on the job details (re: baby blanket, crochet)

Sam rides the beat like a bicycle (Molly Jones), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 23:37 (nineteen years ago)

anyone ever knitted a guitar strap? i'm working on one right now -- no pattern or anything. seems like it couldn't be that hard...

wordy rappinghood (roxymuzak), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 23:58 (nineteen years ago)

I think Stitch n Bitch has a pattern for one? I know I saw one recently. It doesn't seem like it would be hard at all--just a long, thin scarf?

yes sam, must knit fap soon! our plans to go away for thanksgiving are now cancelled, so I'm available :)

patita (patita), Wednesday, 22 November 2006 00:28 (nineteen years ago)

I've given in and bought Stitch 'n Bitch. It annoys me that it's not 'n' but I'm trying to ignore it because the book makes a lot more sense than the knitting guide I bought four years ago, which is now dusty on my shelf. I did the knit/purl heart square thing in an hour this morning and it made me late for work! Next: the scarf with the rude name. Will report back.

Mädchen (Madchen), Wednesday, 22 November 2006 10:59 (nineteen years ago)

the crochet stitch n bitch has a pattern for a guitar strap

gem (trisk), Wednesday, 22 November 2006 11:02 (nineteen years ago)

I can't seem to find that frilly type shawl we knitted in class online. HMMM.

Starting to get scared that the cardigan will be too small. But I will persevere. Want to have that done in (max) two weeks time. Which means a lot of knitting. :-) The moss/seed stitch looks AWESOME.

Must resist ordering a gazillion knitting books from Amazon. :-)

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Wednesday, 22 November 2006 11:14 (nineteen years ago)

roxy, here's a guitar strap: (warning, it has fuzz attached)

molly d (mollyd), Wednesday, 22 November 2006 14:01 (nineteen years ago)

one month passes...
We must have knitting back near the top.

I started Fetching last night (for a friend, not sure if I'll like it myself). Can I just say how much I hate knitting in the round with dpns?

Ms Misery (MissMiseryTX), Thursday, 4 January 2007 13:05 (nineteen years ago)

Ek! I hate'em too. Did it once in class but I kept losing the needles! I asked my teacher about knitting with circ needles but she said it was crap.

As I said in zee Sandbox: Bought my Lana Grossa yarn (for my sweatah). Still need to finish that charcoal greyish cardigan for Ophelia and scarf for Thom. Also busy making a lacy shawl and that chinese charm bag.

Now I will find a box to send yarn. :-)

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Thursday, 4 January 2007 13:10 (nineteen years ago)

Ah I love circulars! But for some things (gloves, socks, crowns of hats) I understand dpns are neccesary. my stitches keep falling of the back ends of the needles. need stoppers.

I have yarn waiting for you too.

Ms Misery (MissMiseryTX), Thursday, 4 January 2007 13:12 (nineteen years ago)

Hi hi hi everyone! My New Year's Resolution - partly inspired by the wonderful things you have been showing on the Knit Wit threads - is to start knitting. I can do very basic stuff such as cast on, knit, purl and cast off again (so have only ever made very long scarves before) but I have set myself a target of learning to knit properly this year.

There's this new partworks magazine on knitting which is out this week in the UK, so I bought that for 99p (with free needles! and yarn! and video! and magaziney bits!) and have become instantly obsessed with my new hobby. Although I am only knitting a big bobbly scarf to start with, until I feel brave enough to tackle a proper pattern.

I found a good site which I find useful because it shows video clips of someone showing you various knitting techniques : http://www.knittinghelp.com/ I find it easier to watch someone actually doing it for real, rather than try and puzzle it out from a still picture (I am prob a bit thick though).

I will keep looking in on this thread to seek encouragement!

C J (C J), Thursday, 4 January 2007 13:26 (nineteen years ago)

knittinghelp is def. a useful reference.

get familiar with knitty.com if you arent. my favorite site for sure.

I would recommend doing a purse for your first non-scarf. They're a good way to pick up new skills (knitting in the round, decreasing/increasing, different stitches, cables etc.) without having to worry about something fitting someone. Also felted purses are extra beginner friendly as felting hides all your boo-boos!

welcome to yarn madness CJ!

Ms Misery (MissMiseryTX), Thursday, 4 January 2007 13:29 (nineteen years ago)

Ooh..... purses! I have two young daughters, who would just love something trendy and hand knitted like that!! What a brilliant suggestion, Ms M! Thank you :)

Off to find a pattern ........

C J (C J), Thursday, 4 January 2007 13:33 (nineteen years ago)

get the stitch'n'bitch book! it's so much fun! :-)

and yes a big welcome to the knit wits. :-)

i started in july. i've done about three sweaters so far? and a dress. all for my baby girl.

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Thursday, 4 January 2007 23:08 (nineteen years ago)

I think Nath is an anamoly for doing so many garments so soon!

here are a couple of the first bag patterns I did:

grr, why is my old login still here?

Sam rides the beat like a bicycle (Molly Jones), Friday, 5 January 2007 02:29 (nineteen years ago)

I am not so inept at knitting as I feared, though I can't get past the second row. I am an expert at frogging now, tho. My mum-in-law's gonna come give me the helps tonight. Look upon these works and despair, Ozymandias!

Abbott (Abbott), Friday, 5 January 2007 03:00 (nineteen years ago)

abbott: you have to remember that EVERYONE was a beginner once. once you realize that, it gets a lot better to tackle problems. :-)

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Friday, 5 January 2007 07:39 (nineteen years ago)

Oh hell yeah, I was excited I got as far as I did. I don't mean to sound the whiner or the compliment fisher. I'm really excited! :)

Abbott (Abbott), Friday, 5 January 2007 07:58 (nineteen years ago)

Oh Sam! I like that Booga Bag pattern very much.

I want to try this Ruffles and Ridges one first, so I hope it's not too difficult for a newbie knitter like me:

http://www.knitnstyle.com/projects/lionbrandpurses.shtml

I thought that I'd do it in a sparkly black/gold instead of red, if I can find the yarn. I've got some gold coloured satin material I could line it with.

C J (C J), Friday, 5 January 2007 08:56 (nineteen years ago)

The only things I think might prove tricky with that pattern would be attching the ruffle fringe (I don't even know what a crochet slip stich is) and possibly working with the novelty yarn. In my baby knitter days I tried making scarves out of this cute fuzzy, fluffy novelty yarn and it was a nightmare. I gave up and have touched the stuff since.

Ophelia wearing the cardigan! I'm mad proud really. :-)

I'll be sending the box on monday,PROMISE! :-)

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Friday, 5 January 2007 14:30 (nineteen years ago)

I got some yarn last night that is silk with a stainless steel core! It has memory, and makes this very funky crumpled paper type fabric. I foresee a crazy arty scarf in my future!

Still cranking out xmas presents (shameful with tomorrow being Epiphany and all), but hats are fairly mindless right now.

I'd recommend a hat as the thing to try after a purse. It's a good step in trying to fit something that's not very complicated, and they finish quickly enough to be rewarding. I've used odds and ends from other yarn to make crazy hats that were a hit for the holidays. Plus, you can make little ears for them and amaze your friends and family ;)

patita (patita), Friday, 5 January 2007 16:13 (nineteen years ago)

way to go Nath! I have yet to actually finish a sweater. Instead they lie in pieces in my sewing room like a lazy frankenstein project. :(

don't worry about the mail. I've yet to mail two scarves despite finishing them before xmas!

Ms Misery (MissMiseryTX), Friday, 5 January 2007 16:15 (nineteen years ago)

Sam--HCW is having a sock making class soon! Also, an intro to lace knitting that's seriously tempting. I'm thinking of getting together to knit on a weekly/biweekly basis starting on the 17th. Meeting out seems like a good thing because then things like stomach flus and no water service won't intervene ;)

I have yarn for 2 sweaters still neatly on cones, le sigh! Nath, you are inspiring!

patita (patita), Friday, 5 January 2007 17:17 (nineteen years ago)

Nath, Ophelia looks ADORABLE in the sweater!

molly mummenschanz (mollyd), Friday, 5 January 2007 17:19 (nineteen years ago)

no water service won't intervene ;)

hah! I think he's done with all major utility systems now. *crosses fingers*

yes I think meeting out is good, make the rounds of coffeshops/dives.

I should probably take the sock class.

Ms Misery (MissMiseryTX), Friday, 5 January 2007 17:23 (nineteen years ago)

My lacey scarf is coming along nicely thanks to my lovely lifelines. I've repeated the pattern six times now and all is well (touch wood).

Mädchen (Madchen), Friday, 5 January 2007 20:43 (nineteen years ago)

I am going to now attempt a photo with the new camera phone of the ripple stitch scarf that still isn't finished (sorry, Mom):

(it's not that green, IRL)

molly mummenschanz (mollyd), Friday, 5 January 2007 20:50 (nineteen years ago)

Molly, that looks delightful!

I will totally be a sock class buddy. Dive bar knitting would rock.

I have much sock yarn coming my way from http://www.smileysyarns.com/

This place will ship internationally, for those non-US yarn lovers: http://www.discontinuedbrandnameyarn.com/dbny/dbny_index.html

patita (patita), Friday, 5 January 2007 21:25 (nineteen years ago)

OKAY THE FOLLOWING DOES NOT I REPEAT NOT COMPUTE. I made my gauge. Now in the uh pattern it says I should have 9 (YES NINE) sts and 12 (YEP TWELVE) rows. What do I get? 14 sts and 11 rows. HOW CAN THAT BE? I mean, I used a yarn that was slightly different but shouldn't I have a similar amount of sts? :-( I'll take it to class and ask the teacher but I don't trust her AND she CHANGES so much about a pattern I can not follow it anymore. BOOHOO. Ah fuck, next time I'll buy the SAME yarn (as mentioned in the pattern). I always (hah! I only started knitting in July) do this: get suckered into buying a different yarn cause the shop doesn't have it. GRRRRRRRR. Still I did like the look of the gauge. Yes, I broke my promise and already prepare for the BIG SWEATAH. :-) I'm very excited about making something for MEEEEEEE.

The yarn has been chosen and put inside the box. :-) I did a mix of things. I made sure you have multiple balls of several yarns, so you're not stucking trying to find a pattern that requires just one skein (or whatever). :-)

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Friday, 5 January 2007 21:30 (nineteen years ago)

Try a size larger needle.

tokyo nursery school: afternoon session (rosemary), Saturday, 6 January 2007 03:04 (nineteen years ago)

nath, your gauge can vary a lot from what the pattern says because of yarn substituion or just b/c of the way you knit. some people knit tight, others loose. like r/z said, try it again with a larger needle and see if you get closer.

molly, that scarf looks lovely.

patita, should we try for tues or thurs this week? (to avoid future lost conflicts.) when does sock class start?

we have a new kitty! http://www.flickr.com/photos/misery/sets/72157594465068614/

(she's watching me type now and kneading, thankfully with declawed paws, the vintage dress I'm deconstructing.)

Ms Misery (MissMiseryTX), Sunday, 7 January 2007 16:04 (nineteen years ago)

Sam! New kitty is adorable! Is she a tortie? She's so cute!

molly mummenschanz (mollyd), Sunday, 7 January 2007 18:41 (nineteen years ago)

Lucy has inspired me to start on Branching Out too! I started last night and have done a grand total of TWO repeats - most of it was staring and squinting at the chart! Not very clear is it! Shall of course be printing it out at work tomorrow but for the moment my eyesight will suffer, but it's actually not as hard as I thought! I've gone up a needle size to 6mm though, mostly because I wanted to use my purple 6mm needles I got for my last birthday present but haven't had occasion to use yet. And the wool I'm using is just a random 4ply (jaeger matchmaker merino from flip knows where) and I thought it couldn't harm none.

They are v.g needles by the way! Purple acrylics with really pointy ends - essential for all the ssks, k48473tog etc etc :)

Bhumibol Adulyadej (Lucretia My Reflection), Sunday, 7 January 2007 19:08 (nineteen years ago)

Here is something I want to knit, but the wool specified comes to a grand total of £50, so, you know. EFF OFF. And as, you know, it's a COAT I probably don't want to use the shoddiest stuff ever. I will give it some more thought though, because you know, coat ftw!

Bhumibol Adulyadej (Lucretia My Reflection), Sunday, 7 January 2007 19:10 (nineteen years ago)

Hmmmm.... try again!

Bhumibol Adulyadej (Lucretia My Reflection), Sunday, 7 January 2007 19:35 (nineteen years ago)

Oh man, sorry for rambling up thread. I realized that OF COURSE it had to be different (bc it's a FANCY stitch so it couldn't match what it said on the label). Dumb dumber blondest.

Anyway tomorrow I'll take it with me to class, as well as the TWO cardigans I knitted. Showing off, moi, NEVAH! ;-)

That coat is sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo nice. ME LIKEY! No way you can SCAN it and send it to me? Or tell me in which magazine you found this? I'm SO TEMPTED to knit it. Then again, I'm an idiot. Looks difficult for me. :-(

NEW KITTY! I saw on yr flickr page!

http://ec2.images-amazon.com/images/P/1931499438.02._AA240_SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg

anyone have this book? Or any recommendations on what pattern book I could buy? I want something that... well, like that book above.

The Knitter's Handy Book of Sweater Patterns: Basic Designs in Multiple Sizes and Gauges (Hardcover)

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Sunday, 7 January 2007 21:51 (nineteen years ago)

That coat looks great, I, too, would love to know where the pattern is from! Not that I think I'd ever finish something that big, but, well.

Hanna (Hanna), Sunday, 7 January 2007 21:58 (nineteen years ago)

i'm thinking of unraveling my mom's cardigan and doing something else.

Wheezy is indeed a tortie, very pretty! She's still cautious towards and actually bit G. earlier! :(

Ms Misery (MissMiseryTX), Sunday, 7 January 2007 22:18 (nineteen years ago)

Biff bit Ben a while back 'cos he was mad at him for holding the new kitty Stella.

Sarah, I LOVE that coat! It's high time I take on a large knitting project.

Tonight, after cleaning the apartment, I shall finish the mom's scarf and watch PRIDE AND PREJUDICE (the BBC version) as it was given to me by Ben as a PMS-This-will-make-you-feel-better present.

molly mummenschanz (mollyd), Sunday, 7 January 2007 22:22 (nineteen years ago)

Ditto on loving that coat! So many knit coats just look like horrible ideas, but that one makes sense.

Sue: I can't meet this week--Congrats on handsome new kitty! I'm out of town for work until Wednesday and the rest of the week is crammed :( The HCW website doesn't have the class listed and the sheet I picked up has vanished (along with everything else I've been looking for, ugh). I want to say it was on the 21st? I'll have to call them.

I just got a book on sweater design, I'll see if I can find it and post the name. It gave all kinds of information on different body types and styles to really get it right.

patita (patita), Monday, 8 January 2007 04:42 (nineteen years ago)

It's from an old issue of Simply Knitting! Can't think offhand which one and it's no doubt back in the huge pile of knitting mags now. It's the sort of thing that is so nice I'm not sure if I could a) spend that much and b) live with myself if I messed it up!

But for now I'm really enjoying doing Branching Out, which reminds me *prints off the chart*

Bhumibol Adulyadej (Lucretia My Reflection), Monday, 8 January 2007 12:50 (nineteen years ago)

what is branching out? is that the one molly did above? I want a lace-y type pattern to do a yellow scarf with. I don't really like yellow but I think it'd be fun to make something bright. Maybe I'll give it to my mom.

Ms Misery (MissMiseryTX), Monday, 8 January 2007 13:45 (nineteen years ago)

Here you go:
http://www.knitty.com/issuespring05/PATTbranchingout.html

Bhumibol Adulyadej (Lucretia My Reflection), Monday, 8 January 2007 13:49 (nineteen years ago)

ah, I should know knitty. woo, that looks complicated! Good luck Starry! what kind of yarn are you using?

I want to do one similar to the one I just did for my grandma. I used KnitPicks Andean Silk and it was sooo nice to work with. cheap too.

Molly, is the ripple pattern you're using on-line?

Ms Misery (MissMiseryTX), Monday, 8 January 2007 13:55 (nineteen years ago)

And the wool I'm using is just a random 4ply (jaeger matchmaker merino from flip knows where) :)

Yarn link! Mine must be in "soft caramel" flavourcolour. It's 100% wool so not all fuzzy as eg kidsilk haze, rips back fine without much splitting apart, which is v good for first lacey project!

I find the second purl row is where I keep going wrong so I have to pay more attention to rows 1-3 and then it's not so bad. I've had to rewrite the chart by hand though, so it's VISIBLE!

Bhumibol Adulyadej (Lucretia My Reflection), Monday, 8 January 2007 14:07 (nineteen years ago)

I've found Excel handy for re-writing charts for myself.

Ms Misery (MissMiseryTX), Monday, 8 January 2007 14:14 (nineteen years ago)

Branching Out isn't really complicated at all. I know the first 2 and a bit rows by heart now
k3, ssk, yo, k5, yo, [k1, yo] 5 times, yo, k2tog, k3
k3, p however many, k3
k3, ssk, yo after that I forget

BUT SEE!

I'm using a rowan green wool that's 50% merino, 50% cotton which was half price in Fraser's sale, so the whole scarf is going to cost me a fiver. Then I'll go back to the one I started in kidsilk, with a new set of pointier needles, when I've bought them. Why aren't all needles pointy?

Mädchen (Madchen), Monday, 8 January 2007 16:58 (nineteen years ago)

Exactly! The best needles are second hand ones with plenty of use where the tips have had their finish rubbed off leaving an EVIL looking point. That's the metal ones anyway! I am really pleased with the pointiness of my acrylic ones, plastic larger ones aren't really great for pointiness.

I don't know about... bamboo?

Neither do I know about... rosewood!

What colour kidsilk do you have! I'm still a bit intimidated at knitting with such a fuzzy thing. Just imagine ripping that back! Sccrehehch.

Bhumibol Adulyadej (Lucretia My Reflection), Monday, 8 January 2007 17:07 (nineteen years ago)

Sam, here'e the Stitch Finder site from Lionbrand, where I got the Ripple Stitch from:

http://cache.lionbrand.com/stitchFinder.html

molly mummenschanz (mollyd), Monday, 8 January 2007 17:13 (nineteen years ago)

Bamboo ist GRBET! I only have a pair of nine and twelve (US standard) and they are absolutely AWESOME. I plan on buying EVERY single size when I'm in Japan. :-D As opposed to metal, it doesn't need to warm up and it just feels great even when you are knitting for longer periods. Plastic is fun as well, but bamboo is NUMERO UNO for me. I sometimes meet some snobs who only knit with bamboo and I grudgingly have to agree with'em. I'm not that much of a snob that I only want to knit with bamboo but I can understand that some do. It's especially great when you suffer from rheumatism or hand pain (due to too much knitting).

Eh, the teacher calculated my gauge for my sweatah and apparently I was 4 sts off! WTF. :-( I didn't realize I needed to stretch it (cause it was on the needle). Everyone was amazed at my 12 mm needles. Uh, these women have knitted for quite some time! A lot didn't realize such a thing existed?!? ANYHOO I already started and figured out how to read the pattern. I'm such a dimwit. That said, how do I decrease? It doesn't state how to. It's a rib effect (1 K - 3 P) so should I knit together? Is there some rule? I also have to do it a few sts AWAY from the edge, no? Like 3?

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Tuesday, 9 January 2007 08:37 (nineteen years ago)

Depends on which way you want the decreases to slope - one goes left, one goes right but I can't remember off hand which one - you'll want the ones that slope towards the middle I imagine.

At the rate you knit a jumper on 12mms should be done by tomorrow :)

Bhumibol Adulyadej (Lucretia My Reflection), Tuesday, 9 January 2007 10:35 (nineteen years ago)

roffle. I know. Would be great if I did (by next week or something) cause I want a new jumper. Maybe I'll knit some jeans as well cause I need some new ones as well. But I do have to start READING patterns properly. Just noticed that I have to CAST OFF the sts, not decrease. God, I'm so dumb. :-(

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Tuesday, 9 January 2007 10:44 (nineteen years ago)

I like to to decrease a few stitches from the edge becuase it makes it easier when it comes time to sew the edges together.

Oooo knitting shopping in Japan. I love Clover accessories!

I like bamboos for DPNs, they don't slide everywhere as much as metal ones.

And I like bamboo yarn, but it does split a bit.

tokyo nursery school: afternoon session (rosemary), Tuesday, 9 January 2007 13:31 (nineteen years ago)

I prefer bamboo period. But if I need a certain needle and the shop doesn't have bamboo, I'll buy something else. I've been working on something with metal dpns and I hate them. so inflexible!

Last night I finished the left hand of Fetching. I had read others experience with the pattern yet still did it straight. everyone else is right. It's too short (I think) and the picot bind off is not good. I mean it's a cute little trim but for the top edge of a glove-thing, not good. Too much curling. I'm going to do the right one longer and with a plain bind-off to see if I like it better. I'm making them for a friend in NYC. Soon here in TX we shall have no use for such cold weather whimsy.

On the bus this morning I had dropped stitch making a run and picked it up with a bent bobby pin since I didn't have a crochet needle in my bag. felt so bright. ;)

Ms Misery (MissMiseryTX), Tuesday, 9 January 2007 13:55 (nineteen years ago)

Okay, the knitting machine (the woman in my knitting class) knits from 8 pm till 11 pm every night! I shouldn't really use an exclamation mark cause I tend to knit a couple of hours per night as well depending how far along I am. (If it's near the end, I have been known to knit until 12 or even 1 AM.) We also talked about knitting in front of the telly. I love it (when I knit in jersey/ribbed).

Your package is waiting but I can't seem to escape the shop. Promise that I'll do it this week. Sorry. :-((((

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Tuesday, 9 January 2007 14:00 (nineteen years ago)

srsly no worries about package. i'm the suX0r with the mail (among other things)

does anyone here have a ball winder and/or swift? If not how do you deal with winding? I've thought about investing in one b/c I'm crap at winding without tangling but they are high. I tried googling for ways to make one but really only found a girl who's boy had mind one from legos. err, can't do the legos.

Ms Misery (MissMiseryTX), Tuesday, 9 January 2007 16:40 (nineteen years ago)

I've never seen a ball winder! That sounds fun. I usually just do it by hand, or make Ben do it. He makes very nice, tight balls.

That sounded lewd.

molly mummenschanz (mollyd), Tuesday, 9 January 2007 16:42 (nineteen years ago)

ball winder:
http://www.angoravalley.com/equipment/wa_ballwinder.jpg

swift:
http://www.yarn-store.com/images/winders-and-swifts/swift-gag.jpg

my boy will not assist with the yarn. :(

Ms Misery (MissMiseryTX), Tuesday, 9 January 2007 16:48 (nineteen years ago)

Ball winding without a swift: I put the yarn around my knees when I sit (feet propped up) and wind it that way. After a few I've got it down. I start by running the yarn in a figure 8 around my thumb and index finger until it's thick enough to hold its shape, then I pull it off my fingers and wrap the yarn around that as a base.

If it doesn't make sense I can show you :)

patita (patita), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 03:02 (nineteen years ago)

I couldn't find the sewing thread, so I'll ask here. I'm VERY tempted to buy a secondhand sewing machine. I don't need anything fancy at all, something that I could try and make simple (baby?) clothes with. What should I look for?

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 08:35 (nineteen years ago)

Nevermind, found the sewing thread. :-)

Pretty! But looks scary to knit with. Woarghle. Let me know how your progress goes!

I'm up to 7 or 8 repeats now - won't have time to do anymore until the weekend - then again I am skint and have already eaten out once this week so may miss going out on Friday in favour of knitting... depends on how thirsty I am :)

Bhumibol Adulyadej (Lucretia My Reflection), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 13:05 (nineteen years ago)

I fully endorse staying in and knitting.

Ms Misery (MissMiseryTX), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 13:21 (nineteen years ago)

Me too. My recent plans for doing just that have fallen through do to invites to go out and drink. Tonight, however, I shall knit like the wind.

molly mummenschanz (mollyd), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 16:23 (nineteen years ago)

I feel extremely guilty for neglecting my husband's scarf. it just... lies there. :-( my sweater however is advancing really fast!

what i'd like to know: if the pattern states

every 6th needle decrease 2 X 1 st at every side

(that's sort of how it's in my pattern, crappy translation)

do they mean i'll have to decrease TWICE (so have 12 rows)

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 16:28 (nineteen years ago)

is it hard to learn knitting by yourself? it seems like someone needs to be there to guide your hands.

sunny successor agrees: gay dad always trumps slutty mom (katharine), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 16:29 (nineteen years ago)

do you mean every 6th row?

(xpost I started okay but the hand part was really hard. then I took a class and learned I had taught myself wrong.)

Ms Misery (MissMiseryTX), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 16:30 (nineteen years ago)

I had some ladies at work show me how to do the basic knit stitch. I then went out and bought Stitch'n'Bitch and found the instructions to be really easy to follow, and pretty much taught myself everything else from that book (save the few tricks I picked up from friends and relatives).

molly mummenschanz (mollyd), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 16:32 (nineteen years ago)

If you don't have anyone to guide your hands, watch the videos on http://www.knittinghelp.com/ They're great!

Mädchen (Madchen), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 17:12 (nineteen years ago)

my mother wants a bag and I think I'm going to make this one:

http://knitty.com/ISSUEspring05/PATTviadiagonale.html

Originally I was thinking cables as they're fun, but I love how this one looks. I hope it doesn't get boring. Do you think it's large enough for an avg. woman's purse activity? (I don't really carry purses)

Ms Misery (MissMiseryTX), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 18:13 (nineteen years ago)

i think that means every sixth row for example

row 1: decrease (ssk, k2tog, whatever) knit to last two stitches, decrease
rows 2-6: knit or purl as normal
row 7: as for row 1

etc, etc

tokyo nursery school: afternoon session (rosemary), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 18:18 (nineteen years ago)

yay thanks!

is it hard to learn knitting by yourself?

no, esp now with online tutorials (and this thread!). but for idiots like me, a class is GREBT. PROOF:

http://farm1.static.flickr.com/160/352975038_763f680ed1.jpg?v=0

my knitting class!

close-up of lacey shawl i'm knitting:

http://farm1.static.flickr.com/162/352975122_6d48378f39.jpg?v=0

it'll take ages to finish this.

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 18:46 (nineteen years ago)

That bag looks awfully smart. I'd guess should be a good size, too--large enough to fit what you need but not so big that you're hauling everything you own.

I may be interested in some stash swapping, as I seem to have a large number of skeins I acquired and now have no idea why I got them. Some alpaca, some nice wool, etc. I'll get pictures up this week and see who is interested!

patita (patita), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 21:35 (nineteen years ago)

I need to do that too.

I already ordered the yarn for that bag b/c it was cheap (off elann.com) my projects to do pile is growing!

Ms Misery (MissMiseryTX), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 21:36 (nineteen years ago)

Question for y'all:

My friend (whom I've known since I was four) is expecting and due in June (Flag day, to be precise). Her baby shower is in April, so I reckon this gives me PLENTY of time to crank out something really nice.

What should I make? She and her mother are quilters (and amazing ones at that), so maybe I should shy away from blankets? Bibs? Maybe, Nath, you can help me sort out a baby sweater!

molly mummenschanz (mollyd), Thursday, 11 January 2007 14:43 (nineteen years ago)

hmm, never done for a baby although I think a sweater would be great. B/c they're small, they're quick and good learning.

What usually comes in a layette set? hat, booties, bib, blanket or something. Maybe just something like that (perhaps minus the blanket). Or something useful like a bunch of nice washclothes. Or just cutesy like a hooded jumper with bunny ears or something. ;)

Ms Misery (MissMiseryTX), Thursday, 11 January 2007 14:45 (nineteen years ago)

Ooh, have you seen that matinee cardigan? I'm not saying that's what you should pick, but it has been a big success with everyone (including the teacher and people in my knitting class). I'd be happy to scan the pattern!

I also have that D3BBI3 BLI$$ book and could send you a scan of some patterns?

There's also TONS of patterns online.
http://www.craftown.com/knit/baby.htm

I wouldn't really go for patterns for newborns. She'll get enough tiny clothes as it is and it's a joy to get bigger items. :-) Well, for me it was anyway. I still remember holding up pants (for a year old) and thinking "NO WAY will she ever fit in THIS!" She does.

Ok, I'm rambling. There's also *diaper pants*. So I've seen on other flickr pages. But I have never come across patterns for'em. :-(

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Thursday, 11 January 2007 14:50 (nineteen years ago)

make these!!!

http://www.knitty.com/ISSUEwinter05/PATTblu.html

Ms Misery (MissMiseryTX), Thursday, 11 January 2007 14:52 (nineteen years ago)

Oh yes! Seconded!

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Thursday, 11 January 2007 14:53 (nineteen years ago)

Thank you thank you!

Baby jeans! OMG. Those can't get any cuter!

Thus far, they're not sure if it's a boy or girl yet, but they are going to find out soon. She'll probably end up getting enough baby blankets from her crafty family, so something different might just be what I'm looking for.

molly mummenschanz (mollyd), Thursday, 11 January 2007 15:06 (nineteen years ago)

I really want to make those little jeans some day so I'd love to hear how they go for you. :)

Ms Misery (MissMiseryTX), Thursday, 11 January 2007 15:26 (nineteen years ago)

let us know if you need any more patterns. you can always email me at stevienixed @ gmail.com

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Thursday, 11 January 2007 15:50 (nineteen years ago)

I was on the train and hoped the lady next to me would change places so I could knit. I had noticed her sweater and wondered if it wasn't a self-made one cause the yarn looked familiar and also due to the form. She changed places and TOOK OUT HER KNITTING! Looked cute: double rib (?) in the round in a beautiful yarn. I took out my scarf (project for my husband). Very funny how we were both knitting away on the train.

She sort of got talking to me but I didn't really took the bait. Should have, cause she seemed pretty coolio!

My own sweater: Backpanel is finished, front one almost halfway done. Then the sleeves and collar and I can wear my own frigging sweater. HURRAH. I can't wait. BUt I need to be *unsick*. Shit, this is dragging on andon. Might skip class tonight if I still feel like shit. :-(

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Monday, 15 January 2007 09:25 (nineteen years ago)

My scarf for my mother still isn't finished. I'm so bored with it. I know the stitch, now I want to move on to SOCKS or something fun.

molly mummenschanz (mollyd), Monday, 15 January 2007 16:28 (nineteen years ago)

I started a third project last night, the via diagnole bag from Knitty from my mom. I've never knit with cotton before and can't say I like it. Also the only #6 circs I have are those cheapo interchangable ones and the keep coming unscrewed.

Stlll on the needles: malcolm x bag (bus project), fetching (almost done, finish today probably)

Today is a holiday so I plan on sewing most of the day. But we're due ice and snow so I might get a whole 'nother day of work!

So Nath, you were checking out that lady's sweater. . .does anyone else find themselves constantly deconstructing stranger's garments with their eyes?

Ms Misery (MissMiseryTX), Monday, 15 January 2007 16:35 (nineteen years ago)

Sam: HCW sock class on Jan 21 and 28! from 1 to 3, I think. Also, the Wednesday night drop-in class is being run by one of the coolest people there (the woman who taught the animal hat class). It's $20, but she can answer all kinds of questions on stuff. It's from 6:30 to 8:30, and I'm thinking of going.

I'm making fingerless gloves today in honor of the SNOW DAY!

patita (patita), Monday, 15 January 2007 18:47 (nineteen years ago)

I would like to do the sock class, K. Just got an email though it didn't list the time. . .

Ms Misery (MissMiseryTX), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 16:10 (nineteen years ago)

the DIY Network show Knitty Gritty - what do we think of it?

I've seen a handful of episodes and on one hand I'm "Austin Craft Mafia, represent!" and then on the other I'm "eh, shouldn't this be on Sat. morning E/I programming?"

thoughts on knitting shows?

Ms Misery (MissMiseryTX), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 17:57 (nineteen years ago)

I posted this on the KnitList but figure Imight as well post here as well. :-(

I hope (no, desperately HOPE) someone here has the magazine and can
help me out with the sleeves. I have knitted the front and back panel
and even started on the sleeves. But I can't seem to get my head
around'em (so to speak). The gauge says: 9 sts - 12 rows for 10 cm on
10 cm (which I think, in inches amounts to 4 or something?). Anyway
they recommend me to cast on 47 stitches! That can't be right, now can
it? On the pic (http://www.lanagrossa.com/journale/filati_32/15.jpg)
the sleeves aren't wide at all, so how come they recommend to cast on
47 sts?!? In the pattern it says it should be about 13 cm wide (which
seems a bit tight, even for my slender wrists) so maybe they mean it's
13 cm *half* (and 26 cm in total). I'm extremely confused here. :-( Is
anyone out here able to help me? :-(

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 21:40 (nineteen years ago)

So Nath, you were checking out that lady's sweater. . .does anyone else find themselves constantly deconstructing stranger's garments with their eyes?

I'm getting there... slowly but surely. I have noticed that, much like jewellery, I see knitting (sweaters and the like) differently. I expected this (as I had experienced the same with jewellery once I started working in my parents' shop). I didn't like that woman's sweater that much cause it was bit... formless. :-(

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 21:42 (nineteen years ago)

hmm, did you figure out your sleeve problem yet? I need to think about it after I"ve finished my coffee. I have a wicked, head-clouding head ache this morning and I don't know why. Didn't drink anything yesterday!

In knitting news I finished the Fetching glovelets for my friend and am now attempting to adapt the pattern to make some convertible mitten things for myself.

Got new less-cheap yarn and am re-casting on Via Diagnole for my mother. So far still not liking the pattern.

I renounce horrible metal needles forever! Bamboo is the only way to go.

Ms Misery (MissMiseryTX), Monday, 22 January 2007 14:49 (nineteen years ago)

are you starting top down from the sleeves?

tokyo nursery school: afternoon session (rosemary), Monday, 22 January 2007 16:52 (nineteen years ago)

are you starting top down from the sleeves? at that guage, 47 stitches, it would be abt 50 cm/20 inches.

tokyo nursery school: afternoon session (rosemary), Monday, 22 January 2007 16:54 (nineteen years ago)

What pattern is that guage for? If that's for stockinette, and the sleeves are done in something else, that can make a difference? And is the gauge what the pattern says you should have or for what the band on the yarn says?

tokyo nursery school: afternoon session (rosemary), Monday, 22 January 2007 16:56 (nineteen years ago)

Sam: did you go to the sock class? My weekend was taken with a rotting bathroom and unexpected Cubans. Z took the lace making class and declared it an absolute dud! We're on for Wed. at Epoch at 7, finally :)

Nath: Can you check the magazine's website to see if they published corrections to that pattern?

patita (patita), Monday, 22 January 2007 17:09 (nineteen years ago)

no, I didn't feel like class alone (and kinda tight $$-wise this month.) bummer about the lace class, I was thinking of doing that soon.

wed at epoch? that's the place we went to before right? cool.

sweaters stump me. I must try one again soon. Ribbed Cardi after Malcolm X bag!

Ms Misery (MissMiseryTX), Monday, 22 January 2007 17:12 (nineteen years ago)

I started the Fembot from Naughty Needles. I'm not sure why exactly, but it looks cute! And Boa and Fun Fur have been on sale lately.

And I bought a pattern for knitting hedgehogs! I will make some in normal colors and some, er, not so natural.

tokyo nursery school: afternoon session (rosemary), Monday, 22 January 2007 18:17 (nineteen years ago)

bah, my naughty needles order from amazon disappeared! I mean it doesn't even show up on my order history, weird. maybe there's an angel watching over my impulsive spending.

I'll try ordering it again when I get paid.

Ms Misery (MissMiseryTX), Monday, 22 January 2007 18:18 (nineteen years ago)

I'm not sure who is going to make the mermaid tail.

One big annoyance of the book, is that it just gives the sizes as s, m, l or size 6, 8, 10 whatever which is not very helpful! Inches is much better.

tokyo nursery school: afternoon session (rosemary), Monday, 22 January 2007 18:25 (nineteen years ago)

Rosemary, I have that pattern too! The world needs some funky hedgehogs! Supposedly it's really well written as an intro to short rows.

Sam, that's the place. Z will be there with another friend too.

patita (patita), Monday, 22 January 2007 18:31 (nineteen years ago)

Can anyone recommend software for making knitting patterns/designs?

Anything?

jay d (Lector11), Monday, 22 January 2007 19:15 (nineteen years ago)

which do you mean?

I've used software before for making a sweater pattern (although I wasn't too pleased with the result) and there is a free site which will convert a gif to a chart (for a design): http://www.microrevolt.org/knitPro/

Ms Misery (MissMiseryTX), Monday, 22 January 2007 19:21 (nineteen years ago)

hmm, did you figure out your sleeve problem yet?

No. Lana Grossa UK mailed me saying they were aware it was wrong. hah! I knew that. But they didn't tell me how many sts I need to cast on. The teacher was obsessed with the fact I first measured my arm before we started. ARGH Just TELL ME HOW MANY STS! :-( I think I'll mail the Belgian lady who's also on the KnitList.

I bought some yarn (Lana Grossa) for a new cardigan but YET AGAIN I didn't read the pattern properly so the teacher helped me out in the amount of sts I need to cast on. *sigh* Next time I will order my Lana Grossa yarn online so I have the EXACT SAME type. :-)

Also started on a new cardigan for Ophelia. It's sort of metallic blue. I love *odd* (read: non pastel) colours for her. :-)

Shit, just remembered I stillneed to send the package. God, I'm a slackah. :-(

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Monday, 22 January 2007 20:49 (nineteen years ago)

Hi, I buy too much yarn. :(

I keep buying yarn for new projects before I finish others. I just bought some for this:

http://www.knitty.com/issuesummer05/PATTbaseball.html

for my bf for V-Day. But I seriously doubt I'll finish it in time. :/

Ms Misery (MissMiseryTX), Monday, 22 January 2007 21:31 (nineteen years ago)

I lost one of my old store bought gloves so decided to modify Fetching and make myself some new ones. Then I saw this pattern: http://www.knitty.com/ISSUEfall02/PATTbroadstreet.html and started swatching last night. Then this morning I gave up and decided I'd buy some new gloves.

I have too many projects on the needles as it is to start mucking about with glove-mitten-things for myself. Besides it probably won't be cold anymore by the time I finish them. :( Still, buying something I could knit, the shame!

What ideas have you abandoned? Come on, give me knitting talk!

Ms Misery (MissMiseryTX), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 14:14 (nineteen years ago)

Or maybe I should just do something quick and easy like this:

http://www.bevscountrycottage.com/the-mitts.html

I should be able to do that in a night or two, huh? Hmm, maybe I should look through some of those stacks of books I have.

I'm too knitty-dependant.

Ms Misery (MissMiseryTX), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 14:31 (nineteen years ago)

I want to do an ILX knit-a-long. Anyone else interested? What should we make?

Ms Misery (MissMiseryTX), Thursday, 25 January 2007 17:48 (nineteen years ago)

Those mittens look pretty easy!

I'm totally game for a knit along. We could make...
http://acunningplan.typepad.com/andsheknitstoo/files/skull_scarf.html
http://www.eunnyjang.com/knit/2006/11/endpaper_mitts.html
or anything. Dare we try a sweater?!

patita (patita), Thursday, 25 January 2007 18:24 (nineteen years ago)

I like those mitts, mainly for the color work.

I'd be down for a sweater, maybe something simple, in the round.

I'd really like to try something I've yet to complete.

Ms Misery (MissMiseryTX), Thursday, 25 January 2007 20:47 (nineteen years ago)

I'd like a knitalong! But... dunno how much yarn costs in the US but over here it's fairly expensive and I doubt I'd be able to afford to join in anything requiring significant purchases of yarn, so socks/mitts/TOYS (owls!!) would be best I think!

Bhumibol Adulyadej (Lucretia My Reflection), Thursday, 25 January 2007 21:41 (nineteen years ago)

can you order from sites like this? knitpicks.com

Ms Misery (MissMiseryTX), Thursday, 25 January 2007 21:43 (nineteen years ago)

American companies rarely ship outside of US/Canada - and anyway blah blah support your local yarn shops blah blah :)

Bhumibol Adulyadej (Lucretia My Reflection), Thursday, 25 January 2007 21:47 (nineteen years ago)

i'm fine about supporting LYS except when that means I can't knit b/c they're too high! ;)

Ms Misery (MissMiseryTX), Thursday, 25 January 2007 21:50 (nineteen years ago)

Too right blergh.

How about we knit OWL WARSH-RAGS?? (via wayback machine)

I am totally going to cast on like... NOW!

Bhumibol Adulyadej (Lucretia My Reflection), Thursday, 25 January 2007 21:56 (nineteen years ago)

does it have a picture of an owl on it?

maybe we could all knit so many squares of different pattern/design whatever, send one to everyone and then we could have a collective, uh, dishtowel. . .

Ms Misery (MissMiseryTX), Thursday, 25 January 2007 22:04 (nineteen years ago)

I guess we could start with the owl and see where it gets us!

I've not done colorwork before, and those mitts look simply awesome.

we could do a knit gift thing, where we all pick a project and someone else makes it for us :)

I'd be happy to send you yarn, starry! we could swap for something that's cheaper for you locally or something.

patita (patita), Thursday, 25 January 2007 22:08 (nineteen years ago)

Comes out like this I think!

Oh Patita that is a nice offer! But I think that starts getting a bit complicated and postage taking forever and so on. I think at least for the first one a smaller thing would be better, prob in DK-ish weight not requiring much fitting so yarn substitions if not in a 'global' yarn wouldn't be a massive headache or a pain to obtain and so on. But I dunno! I am enthused about a super knitalong now!

Bhumibol Adulyadej (Lucretia My Reflection), Thursday, 25 January 2007 22:17 (nineteen years ago)

Haha with that pattern above you could easily make yr own Marc Jacobs sweater innit.

Bhumibol Adulyadej (Lucretia My Reflection), Thursday, 25 January 2007 22:18 (nineteen years ago)

I'd be interested in doing something with that kind of relief design. I've never done it before.

I'm sure we can come up with something. I'll look through bookmarked patterns for ideas.

Ms Misery (MissMiseryTX), Thursday, 25 January 2007 22:21 (nineteen years ago)

some options:
http://brookenelson.com/leafscarfpattern.html (for any worsted weight yarn)
http://alohamedia.net/sarah/hats/chicken-viking/ (hahahahahaha)

hedgehogs! http://www.twoswansyarns.com/cgi-bin/category.cgi?item=FiberTrends-228x

some day maybe we could try this one:
http://ahknits.typepad.com/knititude/2006/09/chinese_lace_pu.html (in dk)

patita (patita), Thursday, 25 January 2007 23:22 (nineteen years ago)

I like the look of all of those thought I'm less inclined towards winterwear since I just don't we Texans reasonably have much more time to use it. (hedgehogs maybe?)

Ms Misery (MissMiseryTX), Friday, 26 January 2007 02:48 (nineteen years ago)

That's the pattern that Rosemary and I have already... if it's not available for anyone locally we can sort it out. It takes a worsted weight felting wool in two colors and some novelty yarn for the spikes.

I guess we'll get a tally of who's in for this and get cranking!

I'm in a race to finish my current project and get working on some mitts so that I'm ready for the "record cold temperatures" next week!

patita (patita), Friday, 26 January 2007 03:51 (nineteen years ago)

A knitalong sounds great only I'll be in Japan until the nineth of February. (Heh, I keep saying this if only to make Ms Misery a bit more envious! j/k)

What ideas have you abandoned?

Oh boy! Where do I start!

I wanted to make myself a shawl but the yarn - that I was going to use in the project I will mention below - and stitch was too stiff.

http://farm1.static.flickr.com/151/367383895_19908bf9b0_m.jpg

This will now turn into a handbag. I already have the round bamboo handles.

I wanted to use this yarn for the edging of a Lana Grossa cardigan but... well, it won't work I ph34R. I had misread the pattern and figured that a multicolored yarn (in the same range) would work but then I noticed that I had to use a *double thread* (probably to make the cardigan a bit stiffer) so I ditched that. Next time it will not only have to be the same range but the same colour. *sigh* Support your LYS? Hell no! They can never supply me with the correct yarn. :-(((((

It appears that sweater I'm knitting is completely WRONG. I mean, the pattern! Not only the amount of sts for the sleeves, also the amount of yarn I needed AND the sttich!

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Friday, 26 January 2007 10:19 (nineteen years ago)

Oh and my dad came back from Japan with two Japanese friends. One gave me some yarn and old knitting/crochet needles and two Japanese knit mags! She also made two dishcloths (I think on the plane). How sweet! :-D

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Friday, 26 January 2007 10:24 (nineteen years ago)

That leaf scarf sounds just doable for me. But I don't want to push my choice on you girls, pick whatever you like and I'll see if I can do it. I'm not that advanced yet. :-)

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Friday, 26 January 2007 11:07 (nineteen years ago)

I'm sorta already making a leafy scarf though - jsl...

Bhumibol Adulyadej (Lucretia My Reflection), Friday, 26 January 2007 11:35 (nineteen years ago)

I'm in a race to finish my current project and get working on some mitts so that I'm ready for the "record cold temperatures" next week!

one of mittens down, one to go! Going to visit the inlaws tomorrow, hour and half drive, done.

Ms Misery (MissMiseryTX), Friday, 26 January 2007 14:54 (nineteen years ago)

I have a different hedgehog pattern!

I am trying to finish a rainbow balaclava before I have to go out in the freezing wather tonight.

tokyo nursery school: afternoon session (rosemary), Friday, 26 January 2007 15:25 (nineteen years ago)

So I made the owl!

http://farm1.static.flickr.com/169/373807407_3885708535_m.jpg

hoot hoot

Bhumibol Adulyadej (Lucretia My Reflection), Monday, 29 January 2007 23:11 (nineteen years ago)

PS I only cast on for this yesterday evening and finished it this evening so you have NO EXCUSE for not making owls too!

Bhumibol Adulyadej (Lucretia My Reflection), Monday, 29 January 2007 23:17 (nineteen years ago)

hedgehog pattern FITE!

ok, I will make the owl as my next project. maybe by the time Nath is back we can have an idea?

patita (patita), Monday, 29 January 2007 23:56 (nineteen years ago)

Hi I have started to knit too but so far I am crap and only doing an plain scarf in garter stitch, so pls do not laff.

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 30 January 2007 06:49 (nineteen years ago)

I have knitted something!! Successfully!! I am so excited.

I've started collecting this weekly part-work magazine (the Art of Knitting) which has just been published in the UK, and I've made the bag pictured here :

http://www.artofknitting.co.uk/patterns.html

Except I didn't make it in orange and yellow stripes, I knitted it in a sparkly black eyelash yarn, which turned out to be easier to knit with than I had feared (once I had got the hang of it). It's done in size 5.5 needles which are reasonably chunky, so it knitted up really quickly. I had some yarn left over, so I knitted an ipod cozie for my daughter's ipod video (just a simple rectangle folded in half and stitched together at the sides, with a neck cord made from a length of knitting 3 stitches wide). I'll post pictures when I figure out where I've put the camera :)

Good luck with your scarf, Trayce. A couple of weeks ago I couldn't knit to save my life (I found the video clips on the knitting.com site a really big help - it just seemed easier to watch someone actually knitting rather than try and follow pictures in a book)

C J (C J), Tuesday, 30 January 2007 08:44 (nineteen years ago)

Trayce garter stitch is brilliant - I like it so much! More things made from garter stitch please :)

Congrats CJ! Send pix!

Bhumibol Adulyadej (Lucretia My Reflection), Tuesday, 30 January 2007 09:21 (nineteen years ago)

Double urgh with blergh on top. I just realized that the cardigan I wanted, does work with the yarn I bought. Hoerah! But sadly my teacher changed the pattern again. Should I follow her? My husband says yes cause that way I will learn how to adapt a pattern so it fits moi.

Leaving in about a day and a half and I am undecided what UFOs I should carry along. I really do need to make the sleeves for that sweater. Then I can maybe wear it in Japan? Hmm. Will also probably take both the shawl and handbag project. And O's new cardigan.

Yesterday I was revealed as a complete knitwit: I was the last in everything. We're learning to make a V-collar and one with a... that looks envelope like or whatever you'd call it in English.

Oh I also had a nice hot cream chocolate drink. heh.

CJ, yes, online videos are a great help. The pics in books only start to make sense once you have some experience.

Trayce, we will not larff/laff or laugh. We all started purling and doing simple scarves! (In Japan they call a scarf, a muffler. VERY confusing. heh)

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Tuesday, 30 January 2007 10:14 (nineteen years ago)

The weird thing for me was, I had learned basic knitting in primary school and then never done it again. I picked it back up, looked at a book, tried it out, and my hands just... went right. They remembered what to do!

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 30 January 2007 10:19 (nineteen years ago)

Me too! It's like riding a bike, you never forget!

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Tuesday, 30 January 2007 10:22 (nineteen years ago)

I just saw the most AMAZING hand-knit COSBY SWEATER. I kept staring at it. Tricky stuff!

molly mummenschanz (mollyd), Thursday, 1 February 2007 17:17 (nineteen years ago)

Made 4 ears last night! Time to do something other than a hat, ugh.

patita (patita), Thursday, 1 February 2007 17:30 (nineteen years ago)

ack, kari, sorry for missing knit group last night. I meant to email you before I left work and forgot.

I was slammed and exhausted yesterday I just couldn't muster the energy.

yay ears!

Those mittens were so easy I'm making anotehr pair for my therapist. and trying to finish the sweater before vday.

Ms Misery (MissMiseryTX), Thursday, 1 February 2007 18:48 (nineteen years ago)

urgh. . .

I've given up on a valentine;s sweater. Not only is working with cotton far more a pain in the ass than I imagined but the two patterns I've tried have been THE WORST PATTERNS EVER WRITTEN. urgh. Instead I've decided to make a stuffed version of the Adult Swim bird flip robot to accompny the oh-so-sexy car mats for V-Day. I'm going to recreate the lite brite with beads. (or maybe lite brites if I can just buy a pack of pegs. that'd be awesome.)

Other projects I've got in the queue:
-At the top, long overdue birthday presents for my aunt: stuffed bear made of coke print flannel, curtains made out of coke tapestry.
-Harry Potter Griffndoyr(sp?) quidditch sweater for myself in time for the book/movie release. Since that's in July though, it's going to have to be short-sleeved and cotton.
-one of these days, socks
-that via diagnole purse for my mom, in cotton.

ARGH COTTON. direct me to some decent cotton yarns pls.

K, will you hate me if I skip knitting again b/c Lost is starting? could we possibly move our night to Thurs or is the bad for other people?

Nath, if you are reading in Japan, you were in my dream last night. We were at some sewing retreat, learning to sew darts together.

sorry for the heavy sewing content.

Ms Misery (MissMiseryTX), Tuesday, 6 February 2007 14:16 (nineteen years ago)

Would 50% cotton do? I've been knitting with this for a while and it's super easygoing.

Mädchen (Madchen), Tuesday, 6 February 2007 14:34 (nineteen years ago)

I saw that and liked the looks of it. although 50% wool worries me in terms of sweaters. In TX sweaters have a limited time frame and if I'm going to invest in them for me and G. I want to make sure we get as much use out of them as possible. might be okay as a purse.

So far for my mom I've been using Berroco's Cotton twist (cotton and rayon). It's a decent yarn but I wasn't prepard for how slippery it was. (could be the slip stitch pattern that's tripping me up.)

I was looking at this for sweaters too. But for my HP sweater color is an issue. I need that deep scarlet and bright gold colors. argh, I might have to join an HP knitting list or something.

Ms Misery (MissMiseryTX), Tuesday, 6 February 2007 14:40 (nineteen years ago)

Wool Cotton is lovely - I doubt you'd be sensitive to it as it's often used for babby hats and the like. Indeed that is why I bought some! But gave up after lots of swearing at dpn hat and made myself a hat that I sewed up later. It kind of works so hooray for making up your own hat pattern. Except I never wear it. I should undo it and make some gloves.

Rowan All Seasons cotton comes in lots of nice shades but I remember when Katie was crocheting something from it it had a lot of knots in it - this was years ago though and let's face it quite a LOT of wools have knots in them...

Bhumibol Adulyadej (Lucretia My Reflection), Tuesday, 6 February 2007 14:55 (nineteen years ago)

Patons also do a nice 100% cotton - I think that's what it's called!

Bhumibol Adulyadej (Lucretia My Reflection), Tuesday, 6 February 2007 15:00 (nineteen years ago)

I'll check out Pattons.

I'm not worried about being sensitive to the wool, just it being hot in 90+ degree weather!

FTR, what I was using to try and do a sweater for the boy was KnitPicks Shine worsted. Not feeling it. KnitPicks seems touch and go. I like Wool of the Andes for basic stuff and LOVE LOVE Andean silk (good replacement for DB Cashmerino Aran). Oh well at least it's cheap enough that if it doesn't work it's not that big of a blow.

Ms Misery (MissMiseryTX), Tuesday, 6 February 2007 15:02 (nineteen years ago)

Oh gosh - then... don't knit sweaters!! Never mind wooly ones!

I am totally going to get some of this sock yarn, not that I've even finished socks from LAST time, but DUDE! I need some bright colours in my life!

http://www.getknitted.com/acatalog/SassyStripes-707.jpg

Bhumibol Adulyadej (Lucretia My Reflection), Tuesday, 6 February 2007 15:08 (nineteen years ago)

Oh gosh - then... don't knit sweaters!! Never mind wooly ones!

haha, right? well I think G.'s sweater will definitely wait until next year b/c we probably have only one more chilly turn this season.

But the HP sweater. . .I want it to wear in anticipation of all the HP goodness to come. I'm thinking a knitted cotton shell wouldn't be too bad for work wear and midnight lines at the book store.

i like that sock yarn. I have at least three pairs worth of sock yarn at the moment and no socks to show.

Ms Misery (MissMiseryTX), Tuesday, 6 February 2007 15:11 (nineteen years ago)

Ach, the scourge of must see TV! ;) No problem, I understand this Lost show is pretty compelling. Z is taking a Diff EQ class on Tuesdays and Thursdays... hmm. Would a Monday work? We'll sort something out.

Knocking out yet another ear hat and trying to figure out which cable pattern to use for a scarf. I've got yarn coming for sweaters (I can always use cardigans for work).

Socks. We will have to conquer socks soon.

patita (patita), Tuesday, 6 February 2007 15:25 (nineteen years ago)

you and the ear hats! (is this one for $$ too? I must find an item to bust into this racket with.)

I'm free Mon, Thurs and Fri. happy hours might not be bad. in general though after work stuff is always hard. if I get into a regular routine maybe it would be better. . .

Ms Misery (MissMiseryTX), Tuesday, 6 February 2007 15:27 (nineteen years ago)

WTF am I thinking - Rowan Cotton Glace is what you want for a light cotton garmet! There are tonnes of patterns for it in various Rowan books as well. I've wanted to make something from cotton glace for a long time but am holding off until inroads are made into existing yarn storage problem.

Bhumibol Adulyadej (Lucretia My Reflection), Tuesday, 6 February 2007 16:44 (nineteen years ago)

Hmm, that might work:

http://www.yarndex.com/images/cotton.glace.jpg

blood orange or poppy and sunny for this?

Ms Misery (MissMiseryTX), Tuesday, 6 February 2007 16:48 (nineteen years ago)

Hmm that's more of a primary red and yellow to me - or that's what showing on my monitor... hmm no really bright yellows in cotton glace. That sweater also looks a bit bulkier - the glace uses 3mm needles or something around that size because it's lightweight and thus quite fine IIRC. Do you have a pattern in mind so you know what weight you want to go for?

Bhumibol Adulyadej (Lucretia My Reflection), Tuesday, 6 February 2007 16:54 (nineteen years ago)

I'll be making my own pattern from a hodge podge of sweaters. ;) I'm sure disaster looms.

colors like this

Ms Misery (MissMiseryTX), Tuesday, 6 February 2007 17:00 (nineteen years ago)

I bought this organic cotton that is so soft! But I hear you on the cotton angst, even a warshcloth in Sugar and Cream/Peaches and Cream is ugggghhhh.

tokyo nursery school: afternoon session (rosemary), Tuesday, 6 February 2007 17:52 (nineteen years ago)

Brown Sheep's Cotton Fleece is not too bad 80% cotton 20% wool, I think. And awesome colors!

tokyo nursery school: afternoon session (rosemary), Tuesday, 6 February 2007 17:54 (nineteen years ago)

I shall try. maybe I should start a swatch business? you could order a swatch of some yarn for like $2-$3 to decide whether you should use it. maybe this is already possible.

Ms Misery (MissMiseryTX), Tuesday, 6 February 2007 20:20 (nineteen years ago)

I think I have found my HP-sweater cotton yarn: Tahiki Anyone used this before? I like the weight, good color options, not too high.

I *soo* want to order it now but have sworn to myself I will not buy anymore yarn until I finish at least one current project. Also our mortgage has just gone up $200. That really cuts into my free-spending yarn money. :(

Ms Misery (MissMiseryTX), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 15:41 (nineteen years ago)

I have only knitted a few rows here in Japan. BOO. I dragged along all my projects fully realizing I wouldn't knit much. Also, on the last day of my holiday here in Japan, which is tomorrow, I will finally be able to buy some knitting supplies. I def want bamboo needles and maybe that knitting machine (for kids). *sigh*

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 15:58 (nineteen years ago)

Are Clovers cheaper there Nath?

I've wanted to ask everyone about their needle inventory but don't know mine without looking.

I do know that I don't have any 9s or anything above a 13. I also have fewer DPNs than other types and more circs than straights. Hmm, I could have written that as a logic puzzle. . .

Ms Misery (MissMiseryTX), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 16:24 (nineteen years ago)

:-( Don't know! I haven't been able to go to a frigging store the past six days. (I also forgot to send that package...) But it seems to be, as my parents sent me some and the price on'em seemed pretty cheap. That said, you can't find any in my city! They don't even know about bamboo! Anyway, tomorrow we're going FINALLY! AAAAAARGGRRGRHRHRRGRGRH.

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 16:32 (nineteen years ago)

yay went and bought bamboo needles (regular ones) in almost every size. made a mistake and bought two 3mm ones and not a 2mm pair so ms misery gets that extra pair. (you want?) also bought some extra big crochet hook, uh two actually, cause i can't get'em here either. and a needle case, some wool but not much and some other stuff. didn't buy yarn cause it's too hard to figure out how much i need for a sweater. isn't it about 500 grams or sth? weird but here they do 40 gr (or less), not a standard 50 gr. They did have AMAZING stuff and i love how they showed finished pieces. forgot to take a pic of the knitting (old) ladies. I had a oriental deja vu: it was like my knitting class but in Japanese. Oh I also bought two pattern books (stitch patterns). YAY! And a needle case. ME VERY HAPPY. HURRAH!

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Thursday, 8 February 2007 17:08 (nineteen years ago)

also yarn was VERY expensive. if i worked it out it would be about 45/50 dollars for a cardigan for ophelia. i love her dearly, but i don't knit well enough to make something that costs so much. they did have cheap ones but why bother? it's still cheaper here.

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Thursday, 8 February 2007 17:11 (nineteen years ago)

wow, it must be cheap for you (or that's non-american dollars) I think any cardi I could make at $50 would be a cheap one.

I would tell you you should keep your extra 3s if they were circs since you can do socks with two circs. but if they are straight, I will take them. :)

If you are lacking in circs I can pass some your way.

needle inventory ladies!

Ms Misery (MissMiseryTX), Thursday, 8 February 2007 17:13 (nineteen years ago)

no no no, i will just send you the package (one day!) and... just don't send anything back. i'd love that. just a gift, y'know.

50 dollars for baby cardigan! which to me sounds a bit expensive. i prefer acryl: cheap and easy to use.

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Thursday, 8 February 2007 17:14 (nineteen years ago)

ms misery, elann.com has a a Cotton Classic equiv. that is about $2 a skein, Sonata, I think.

tokyo nursery school: afternoon session (rosemary), Thursday, 8 February 2007 21:38 (nineteen years ago)

I started with that! The cotton twist is slightly better. just slightly.

maybe it will get better the more I work with it.

I'm going to make myself a public enemy wristband tonight. although i'm worried about getting a gauge small enough to fit their logo. . .

going home to knit now!

Ms Misery (MissMiseryTX), Thursday, 8 February 2007 21:39 (nineteen years ago)

*sigh* I have way too many UFOs. And I'm tempted to start a gazillion things for the little bump, I mean baby. :-) What do you think about a blanket? Should I knit or crochet one?

Also, I'll have to ask the teacher if I can take about four months *off* and then return to my knitting class. Kinda suxors that I'll miss so much. I really do want to learn more once s/he has settled in a good eating routine.

nathalie, Thursday, 22 February 2007 13:41 (eighteen years ago)

what what what?

I've seen suggestions but didn't pay them much mind. . . Nath are you preggers again?!?! When did you announce this? CONGRATULATIONS!

when's the due date? *sees first baby gift in her future*

I hear you on the UFOs. I revisited my public enemy wristband last night. should be a real quick knit except the only black embrodiery floss I could find was rayon and it's not working. i've got to dig through boxes of abandoned craft supplies to find some cotton.

Ms Misery, Thursday, 22 February 2007 13:43 (eighteen years ago)

It's still early - a couple of weeks - but, yes, I'm pregnant. Hopefully, fingers XROSSED, all goes well. Due at the end of October, on my birthday!

I can't wait to go home and knit!

yarn i intend to vuy for baby clothes!

nathalie, Thursday, 22 February 2007 15:15 (eighteen years ago)

Went to Cambridge yesterday and managed to find a wool shop that had apparently been hiding from actual cambridge residents for 8 years! It was AWESOME!

I bought:
- 2 balls of Regia Stretch sock yarn in a DISGUSTINGLY bright colour scheme
- Sirdar Blur in silver/white blend as a Kidsilk Haze substitute with the idea of making something filmy and diaphanous (spelling)
- 1 ball of Wendy KNIT IT - the crazy stuff that makes ruffles. I'll have to cross fingers I actually find the How To guide in one of my old Simply Knitting.

Could easily have bought a lot more.

Am thinking of substituting a Sirdar aran weight for the Lion Brand wool-ease called for in this tank top pattern in Knit 1 - it is called "aran toddler" or sthg and is vvv cozy. I haven't gone back to the pattern and checked guage requirements, but at least it's the right weight and I noted all the details from the ball band.

I still haven't found the latest Knit 1 magazine and am starting to get concerned.

Sarah, Friday, 23 February 2007 15:46 (eighteen years ago)

Another Nath baby? Aw. :-)

Ned Raggett, Friday, 23 February 2007 15:49 (eighteen years ago)

HAHA oh yes also congrats Nath :)

Sarah, Friday, 23 February 2007 15:49 (eighteen years ago)

NED YOU NO THE KNIT IT THREAD? :-)

[i]- 1 ball of Wendy KNIT IT - the crazy stuff that makes ruffles. I'll have to cross fingers I actually find the How To guide in one of my old Simply Knitting.[i]

It's quite easy. We did it in class. BUt I used three balls, mind you. Depends what type of scarf you'd like. I have a mag (Briffish) that explains it. If you need me to scan and send it, just let me know! email is stevienixed at gmail. com

nathalie, Friday, 23 February 2007 16:06 (eighteen years ago)

need. . .new. .. yarn

Ms Misery, Friday, 23 February 2007 16:48 (eighteen years ago)

Nath! Congratulations! I can't wait for photos filled with 2 adorable children in lovely and well-crafted knits!!

molly mummenschanz, Friday, 23 February 2007 17:25 (eighteen years ago)

The Sirdar yarn matches the wool-ease guage and stuff! Molly you can cancel the Lion Brand kerfuffle :)

But NOW I have found another thing I want to make in LIon Brand "Jiffy"! Hahaha, OMG stuff knitted from the inside of jiffy bags would be amazing. But yes. Someone tell me about Lion Brand "jiffy" and I might try and find another substitution.

PS - the fibre is 100% courtelle, I dunno what courtelle IS but boy it is SNUGGLY.

Sarah, Friday, 23 February 2007 21:46 (eighteen years ago)

"need. . .new. .. yarn"

Hey we have the same evil voice in our head! :-) I WANT PAYDAY NOW!

nathalie, Friday, 23 February 2007 21:48 (eighteen years ago)

Oh and I need to go buy some circ needles so I can finish that sweater of mind and WEAR IT. :-D Been a long time since I finished something PROPER. :-)

nathalie, Friday, 23 February 2007 21:51 (eighteen years ago)

Sarah, I am a bad yarn sender! I can get you Lion Brand Jiffy, if you want. I'm really lazy and forgetful!

molly mummenschanz, Friday, 23 February 2007 21:53 (eighteen years ago)

Haha so am I, I haven't sent you that book either! Sheesh what a shower!

No urgent need or desire for the jiffy, have you ever used it? I am sure there are good alternatives I can find here if I decide to get round to it - it is a sleeveless hoodie in Knit1, which I found this evening, mere hours after I'd posted about not being able to get it!

Sarah, Friday, 23 February 2007 22:01 (eighteen years ago)

Jiffy isn't that great.

tokyo rosemary, Sunday, 25 February 2007 03:03 (eighteen years ago)

yarn snob.

(j/k I've never used it. I don' think anyway. . .)

Ms Misery, Sunday, 25 February 2007 03:11 (eighteen years ago)

I knit 2 dishcloths this weekend, while in Buffalo (one for the moms, one for my aunt). My hand hurts.

molly mummenschanz, Sunday, 25 February 2007 14:28 (eighteen years ago)

I managed to knit a VERY long scarf while watching 24. Also did that lacy shawl while watching 24 but I made a mistake. Dropped a stitch. :-( I'm worried that it's gonna run down the ladder and drown. boo! But I think it's okay, I picked it up... hopefully).

The petrol blue sweater is coming along nicely. Almost finished second sleeve and only have to do the collar and seaming. Yes, I know that's a whole lotta work but still... ZEE END IS NEAR!

My hormones are kicking in: I saw this Katia *waist-band* that seems *groovy* when you're pregnant, so that's what I'll knit.

nathalie, Monday, 26 February 2007 09:26 (eighteen years ago)

I knit nearly zero this weekend. all my projects are stalled.

-Via Diagnole purse for my mom - total suckage. I don't think it's the cotton yarn (which I've bought two batches of now) but the slip stitch pattern. it confuses me and bores me and just sucks. I'm trying to do a swatch of just the pattern before I cast on 192 again. I thought I might get the hang of it that way and see how it works. so far, no. I'll work on it a couple of more nights before I give it up.

-My malcolm x bag, stalled. I've f'ed up the last couple of rows of the chart so I have to frog it and fix it somehow. hate fixing.

-My Public Enemy wristband -failed. I think b/c 1. cotton embrodiery floss just doesn't really work with alpaca and 2. it was just too small for the chart and looked bad.

i need new inspiration . . .

Ms Misery, Monday, 26 February 2007 13:35 (eighteen years ago)

I freeformed an mp3 player "cozy":

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/robot_starry/403372175/" title="Photo Sharing"><img src="http://farm1.static.flickr.com/135/403372175_0dbf917be1_m.jpg" width="240" height="180" alt="mp3 player 'cozy'" /></a>

Marvellous, dears. This week I shall be casting on for a toe up sock. New skills = practically ALL of it! I have never done any these crazy "provisional cast ons" before. Can toe up sock knitters share any vital "I wish I had known that when I first started" tips? I will also be researching something to use up my ball of Sirdar Blue: http://www.mavis-crafts.com/category.php/colours/165 (mine is in QUILL).

Sam I think you are bonkers for using alpaca for a wristband - just use an acrylic thing and your embroidery should be fine, I guess you are just doing duplicate stitch?

I am proud to announce that the infernal linen drape is being donated to a good home on Thursday. I am so happy! Now I can REALLY stashbust! This is a fairly quiet week (and not much on this weekend either), I feel like doing lots of knitting.

Sarah, Monday, 26 February 2007 14:07 (eighteen years ago)

Oh nobs - er well if you copy and paste the url in that link's code you shd be able to get to the picture :(

Sarah, Monday, 26 February 2007 14:08 (eighteen years ago)

maybe I should start some socks. road untravlled.

the apalca is really sock yarn I've had sitting around forever and thought this would be a quick project for it. I was doing it on 2.5 mm needles, just stockinette. Maybe I'll try some of my billions of cotton yarns (although the alpaca was a variegated pink that I like alot).

very nice ipod cozy. :)

Ms Misery, Monday, 26 February 2007 14:15 (eighteen years ago)

I talked to my pregnant friend this weekend, and I'm going to start teh Lil'Devil Pants that are in Stitch'n Bitch Nation for her (baby).

molly mummenschanz, Monday, 26 February 2007 14:20 (eighteen years ago)

Is there a pic? I think I'm the only knitter in the world who doesn't own any S'N'B books.

molly mummenschanz, Monday, 26 February 2007 14:26 (eighteen years ago)

yeah those are pretty awesome.

Ms Misery, Monday, 26 February 2007 14:37 (eighteen years ago)

went to buy yarn (diva katia) and they lady said it was expensive and difficult to knit. so bought some katia nepal and will knit a baby blanket. as it was rather expensive i figured it was worth better for a baby than for me. :-)

nathalie, Monday, 26 February 2007 15:24 (eighteen years ago)

Hehe, when I saw those devil pants in the book I started wishing for a child to make them for. My upstairs neighbour's little girl is almost walking so she might be the one...

Here's the picture from the book, btw.

Madchen, Monday, 26 February 2007 18:04 (eighteen years ago)

so serisously, does anyone else here not have any SNB books?

Ms Misery, Monday, 26 February 2007 18:14 (eighteen years ago)

Yes! That baby child is a delight!

I may have posed this question before, and I may need advice from those with kiddies: wool -- use it or lose it for baby items? When I worked for the Canadians, they informed me that I shouldn't knit a baby blanket out of wool (as per the SnB instructions) as the little tyke might develop allergies. Also, with the pants, wouldn't wool pants be a pain to wash? Kids are messy. Do you think I should use a blend?

PS - I have'em both, Sam.

molly mummenschanz, Monday, 26 February 2007 18:20 (eighteen years ago)

I haven't done anything for kids but I think washability would be key (acrylics!). also wool might be itchy on their skin.

Ms Misery, Monday, 26 February 2007 18:22 (eighteen years ago)

The pattern calls for merino wool, but still! Messy mess mess kids + wool pants = certifiable pain in the ass.

molly mummenschanz, Monday, 26 February 2007 18:31 (eighteen years ago)

yeah I really wouldn't use wool with baby clothes.

Ms Misery, Monday, 26 February 2007 18:35 (eighteen years ago)

first off, congrats to nath!! all the stuff you made for lil O will get a second wearing, perhaps!

For regular clothing, I'd say washable is best for babies. For blankets or sleepwear, you want something that's not going to go off like gasoline if exposed to fire. Cotton and superwash wool would be other options.

patita, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 01:21 (eighteen years ago)

Thanks, ladies! I am going to go shopping this week and see what I can find.

molly mummenschanz, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 01:26 (eighteen years ago)

When one of my knitting groups made a blanket for one our pregnant members, we used wool, as we had an Actual Knitting Designer get us a good price, and she said wool was good.

That said certain knitting charities only want cotton, acrylics, or blends of both for knitted blanket squares, probably for the allergies and washability issues.

tokyo rosemary, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 02:07 (eighteen years ago)

Good lord, I wanted to QUIT yesterday. Well, not really. I just skipped one exercise because I hadn't done my prep right. THANK GOD! The previous one was a V-vollar with an elastic finish. Has anyone ever done an elastic start or finish? MUCHO HARD. Esp the elastic finish (with a needle). But my friend, who sits next to me, showed me and now I'm hellagood at it. yay!

I also started the blanket (with Katia Nepal) and my fingers are itching to get ahold of some more yarn. MUST RESIST TEMPTATION.

I have a Stitch 'n' Bitch good, Sam, and am awaiting to place my Happy Hooker order. HURRAH! :-)

nathalie, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 08:37 (eighteen years ago)

I started a toe-up sock last night, and according to the instructions have "completed" the toe, but it seems very very small - ie I have 48sts in the round and, well, it doesn't seem a lot. The pattern I printed off a while ago (widdershins from knitty) only wants you to get up to 54 sts or so to do the gusset... and this is with, you know, regular sock yarn on 2.5mm needles...

Ahem! Except for the fact that the instructions I used were for 5 needles rather than the 4 I usually use, so I accidentally started using 4 2.25mm and one 2.5mm... I think... but I don't think it will make much of a difference, right? Right?

Incidentally - figure of 8 cast on = piece of wii! All the instructions said it was super difficult, but I got it first time! The stitches are fairly loose though but I'm hoping I can tug them about a bit at the end to make them a bit more even.

Widdershins pattern = http://www.knitty.com/issuesummer06/PATTwiddershins.html
Not sure whether I will use it though - don't think the cable would be good for the bright yarn so might just do it plain.

Sarah, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 10:31 (eighteen years ago)

elastic bands, figure 8 cast on. . .you've all left me in the dust.

I briefly thought of doing widdershins. I have a couple of other toe-up patterns that I gave up but need to start again.

Ms Misery, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 13:42 (eighteen years ago)

Toe up sock cast ons here: http://www.knitty.com/issuewinter02/FEATtiptoptoes.html

There are other guides but they all use "the magic loop". I am half tempted to try socks this way but it does seem a lot of fannydangle, shoving your socks up and down and up and down and up and down. I suppose the bonus is that they are quite secure when not in use if you just shove the sock into the middle of the cord. I think I will stick to pointy dpns tho.

Sarah, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 13:53 (eighteen years ago)

are those the kind that involve two circs? I love circs but I don't know if I'm up for that.

Ms Misery, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 13:53 (eighteen years ago)

You can either use two circular needles or one long one!

http://www.az.com/~andrade/knit/mloop.html = one circular
http://www.az.com/~andrade/knit/twocirculars.html = two circulars

I only have two circular needles - one v long 6mm pair (never used) and one very short 3mm pair which has been used sporadically but never for anything in the round, still not short enough for sockses.

Sarah, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 13:56 (eighteen years ago)

GAH! I am seaming my Lana Grossa sweater. Showed it to my husband who found it to be on the short side. Maybe, but that was the point. But the problems I have with it? Oh sigh where to begin! It's too bulky -should have listened to my friends in knitting class - it's the wrong stitch - I shouldh ave paid attention to the pattern - it's a bit too wide at the shoulders - should have listened to the teacher... On and on it seems to go that you don't know what you have till you knit it. ;-) It's fairly good though. I mean aside from the esthetical problems, it turned out pretty good. I managed to make the collar with circ needles and not create any holes! YAY ME. I only have to seam the other side and I'm done. I'll put up a pic soon.

Now I need to try not buying any yarn (save a bit of money) which will turn out a fiasco: I'll probably buy some yarn for a tunic (grebt when i'm preggers) and a waistband kind of thingie. That'll cost about 25 euros most probably. Not too bad ey?

I'm also (hah finances!) buying the Happy Hooker book. Anyone have it? Anyone have any ideas where to find online crochet tutorials? Would it be easy to learn yourself crochet? Not tempted to enroll in a course AGAIN. (I wanna do the bobbin lace making one in two years hopefully.)

my half-finished half-liked Lana Grossa sweatah. I should actually be proud cause this is my first adult sweatah and teknikally it ain't half bad, but still... I don't think I'll ever be fully content with this (or anything else). :-(

nathalie, Thursday, 1 March 2007 14:02 (eighteen years ago)

OK, knitters, I just had an idea while I was putting on my wool sweater that I want to jot down somewhere before I forget it. I'm always having ideas that are mostly hare-brained about how to save the world. They usually involve someone else besides myself making them happen.

What if a collective of environmentally minded knitters got together to knit sweaters for other people. Then there could be an official pledge that people sign promising to turn their thermostats down by a couple of degrees. Those who sign the pledge get sent a hand-knit sweater. To reduce globabl warming. There would be some clever motto which I can't think of now, like Global Warming the Wool Way or Sweaters for Better Weather or something....

I don't knit, so if this is going to work, you guys better get busy. The environment's not going to save itself, you know.

Maria :D, Sunday, 4 March 2007 17:38 (eighteen years ago)

Or maybe just vests, since sweaters are such a big investment in time. I also forgot that wool is expensive. Maybe the enterprise needs its own sheep farm and spinning operation.

Alright, it's a dumb idea.

Maria :D, Sunday, 4 March 2007 17:42 (eighteen years ago)

You can use *acrylic wool (or rather, yarn* which isn't that expensive. But lots of knitters don't like to give their work away as it takes a lot of hours to make a sweater (or anything else). I was reading the knitlist and was amazed at how much they asked.(I hadn't really realized how much work goes into the making of a sweater, I tend to lose track of time...) A pair of socks? Easily 80 to 100 dollars. You can imagine what a sweater will cost. But of course lots of women (and men) knit for charity, usually for children (clothes and toys,...).

nathalie, Sunday, 4 March 2007 19:42 (eighteen years ago)

Some friends told me tonight about people knitting vests for oil-drenched penguins who are victims of an oil spill.

Maria :D, Monday, 5 March 2007 03:21 (eighteen years ago)

Now that I'll deliver at the end of the year I have to choose my classes. SHould I continue knitting class, but impose a break, and also do lacemaking? Or should I choose the latter and drop knitting class? Or just stick with the first? I really don't know what to do!!!!! I know the first couple of weeks/months will be hard but I do want to take a lacemaking class (as well). I noticed that there's a class a bit far away but it starts at six and our shop closes at that time!!! BUGGAH. It's the best one in the vicinity BUT there's one - where I take my knitting classes - which is just around the corner. Argh. What to do! I noticed that that the lacemaking class is only (hah! only!) two hours so that's doable.

nathalie, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 08:07 (eighteen years ago)

I'm still gibbering at Maria's save the world thing, it is a nice idea, but DON'T YOU KNOW THAT IT IS COMMON FOR PEOPLE TO TAKE A YEAR TO FINISH A JUMPER?! I exclude Nathalie from this of course.... they could have a wristband or something and consider themselves lucky.

I know fvck all about lacemaking - but seeing as your shop is lace making welll... it makes sense to do that surely? To be honest I don't know. I don't even know anyone who does actual lace.

I started a knitting blog (as part of my 101 things... list) but it's a bit pish at the moment, I'll show it when I've managed to make it look a bit better - actually you can look know if you want. It is named in honour of Jonathan Creek's hair: http://curlyperm.wordpress.com. Wordpress is bonkers!

Sarah, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 10:03 (eighteen years ago)

Yes, I tend to knit a bit too fast. Maybe as a result the finished product is a bit *blergh*?

I just ordered a ton of Sublime wool and a pattern book. I want to go back to baby-knitting as it's far easier and pleasing. :-D I might also order some Debbie Bliss yarn (from a shop not too far from my town) online and do most of the patterns featured in the book I have and maybe order another book or two from the same author. I really love Debbie Bliss.

The Happy Hooker book is quite interesting but I ph34r I'm not a really crochety (hah!) person. I prefer knitting somehow.

Still working on the baby blanket but it's already halfway done. Yes, I'm fast but that's because it's in a plain stockinette (?) stitch so I can watch 24 while knitting blind. HURRAH.

I'll probably also stick with the knitting class as I'm beginning to realize you really do need to adapt a pattern to a body type and I'm HELLAcrap at measuring. :-( So I'll probably do both.

As I have a lot of yarn over from that crap sweater, I might trade it in for some Katia wool and make a belt and also a tunic or maybe go for a Lana Grossa cardigan. Haven't decided yet. :-)

nathalie, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 10:39 (eighteen years ago)

Ha it looked like I was snapping at Maria's idea, it wasn't intended :)

Whilst I love knitting there are so many AWESOME things to crochet - crochet is best for fun *things* whilst knitting is better for clothes I've decided. I am surprised that I am actually making half decent progress on the sock. On saying that I'm sure I'm jinxing myself so maybe time to put in a lifeline.

Here's my problem though - despite pulling the yarn very tightly between each needle join, I'm still getting those annoying ladders. Even though at one point I pulled so hard I snapped the yarn they're still there. I'm getting round it by knitting the first stitch of the next needle directly onto the working needle, so I'm sort of jogging the stitches along by 1 each round but I'm aware this is "cheating" - and also now I have no idea where my round started so I hope I don't completely eff up when it comes to placing the heel.

Sarah, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 11:02 (eighteen years ago)

So you change needles at different stitches (?)? Because that's what I was recommended in my knitting class. If you do it at the same point, you'll get the ladders. If you change at different points (but not just the stitch next to the previous one) you can avoid the ladders.

I do realize that crochet is wonderful, but feh I only know one stitch (?). The Happy Hooker book is lovely but it all has these... to me!... weirdo patterns. I don't want CLOTHES, I want something else!

nathalie, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 11:20 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, the only clothes in it I liked were the preppy jacket and one of the lacy cardigans was OK. I didn't see the point of the bulky cardigan where the aim seemed to be to make it look as much like knitting as possible - why bother? I think of crochet as more 3d and knitting as more 2d - perhaps I'd think of knitting as more 3d if I could get the hang of dpns!

Sarah, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 11:31 (eighteen years ago)

Ok, how about dickies instead of sweaters ;-)

Maria :D, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 12:31 (eighteen years ago)

Dickies? You don't mean PENIS, I hope. heh

nathalie, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 12:52 (eighteen years ago)

Nath, i want classes like yours.

I totally don't feel crocheted clothes. but i like makig things.

Sarah, I shall read your blog. Damn, I need to get mine going. argh.

All of my knitting projects have stalled. I'm just knitting a little headband for myself on the bus at the moment.

Patita, I don't think I'll make another wed. knitting night anytime in the near future. as long as cabinets are going up I have little to no free time (all cooking and cleaning is on my shoulders. I'm lucky if I get to watch AI over my shoulder. boo)

Ms Misery, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 13:47 (eighteen years ago)

Oh yes, my class is GREBT. Every week someone seems to celebrate their birthday and brings CANDY. OH YAY! But srsly yes, my class is very intensive but extremely handy. You can bring your projects and she will calculate EVERYTHING (if you play along nicely with her suggestions that is). :-)

I just had another peek in that Happy Hooker book and did like that skirt. Seemed pretty snazzy. But I think I'll first do something else, like learn lace making. I have found the class I want to join, only two hours, but it starts when I close the shop. ARGH! How will I manage this when 1 my husband will find another job and 2 put the kids WHERE? I will have to call the daycare and see if they can take my kids a few hours on wednesday. BOO.

nathalie, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 14:16 (eighteen years ago)

Bummer about not making it out to knit, Sam, but I totally understand. Eventually you will have the most fab kitchen and time to knit!

I've stalled out on a fingerless glove pattern that has a thumb gusset and a cable pattern going on at the same time... it confuses me greatly. Now I'm just working on a scarf and biding my time until I get gutsy enough to start a sweater.

patita, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 15:18 (eighteen years ago)

is it fetching? I did that one but did not venture into any that actually went up partways on the fingers.

Ms Misery, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 15:24 (eighteen years ago)

new spring Knitty is up!

tokyo rosemary, Thursday, 8 March 2007 15:08 (eighteen years ago)

woohoo!

Alright, I'm loving the bmp socks, ribena sweater minus the weird arm things that paper sack purse - awesome!

Ms Misery, Thursday, 8 March 2007 15:12 (eighteen years ago)

Sam, I bailed on Fetching after I saw another one called Mt. Tam.

thanks for the heads up, tokyo rosemary!

Working with chenille is a bitch, in case anyone was wondering ;)

patita, Thursday, 8 March 2007 15:57 (eighteen years ago)

Oh boy, I was nearing the end of my lacy shawl but I was too busy watching 24 and dropped a stitch. BOOHOO. I frogged it. And have to start all over. :-(

nathalie, Thursday, 8 March 2007 16:22 (eighteen years ago)

the whole shawl?!

Ms Misery, Thursday, 8 March 2007 16:23 (eighteen years ago)

Nath, I hope it's not the whole shawl!

here's the Mt. Tam pattern (or at least a picture of it).

patita, Thursday, 8 March 2007 17:20 (eighteen years ago)

that looks way harder than fetching!

Ms Misery, Thursday, 8 March 2007 17:20 (eighteen years ago)

Oh hell no! I dropped a stitch in the beginning as well but was able to more or less pick it up. :-)

The baby blanket is starting to bore me to bits. I'm more than halfway through but boy I hope I can finish this quickly.

nathalie, Friday, 9 March 2007 07:32 (eighteen years ago)

PHWOAR! I just received my order from Get Knitted! I nearly wet my pants (in a good way). The yarn is sooooo soft. Expensive for baby clothes maybe, but I don't want crackling acrylic yarn but soft cashmiro (?) yarn for my new baby. I also ordered the Sublime pattern book and a Debbie Bliss baby book. The last will cost me a bundle as I've seen a ton I want to knit. The hell with adult garments, I am knitting some baby clothes.

nathalie, Friday, 9 March 2007 09:46 (eighteen years ago)

oh i forgot to ask, sam did you receive my package yet? if not, it must be lost... :-(((

nathalie, Friday, 9 March 2007 11:18 (eighteen years ago)

I nearly wet my pants (in a good way)

haha!

no package yet but we have lazy mail men. the last yarn package I ordered was late and had smeared pizza all over the front. it should come soon.

Ms Misery, Friday, 9 March 2007 14:04 (eighteen years ago)

I'm cuckoo for the ballband dishcloths! I just knit another one last night.

It's high time I knit something for myself, but I am at a loss.

Must start the devil baby pants this weekend.

molly mummenschanz, Friday, 9 March 2007 17:28 (eighteen years ago)

The Mt. Tam pattern is only harder than Fetching because of the thumb gusset-cable thing. I still haven't resolved that bit, it gets into lots of counting every third row for one thing and every fourth row for another, etc. I need to sit and write out for each row what I'm doing or it'll be frog bait. The rest is dead easy, it's a simple cable and really wide ribbing.

I have a heap of cashmerino for a nice sweater, but I can't decide exactly which. It's tempting to do a really decadent zip hoodie!

Does anyone else enjoy making scarves? I lose patience with them long before they will wrap around my neck (but I love scarves so I soldier on).

patita, Friday, 9 March 2007 23:43 (eighteen years ago)

Patita, I just finished a scarf for my mother that should have been done, in uhh, November. I used to like making them, but I've been getting bored with them, as of late.

The Ester wrap/shawl/thingie on Knitty is really cute, but it looks tough.

molly mummenschanz, Friday, 9 March 2007 23:45 (eighteen years ago)

I would love a cashmerino hoodie.

Ms Misery, Friday, 9 March 2007 23:48 (eighteen years ago)

Does anyone else enjoy making scarves?
No, but I sort of solved that problem by knitting blind and ogling Jack Bauer on telly whilst making'em. hah But it's time for baby clothes. I just calculated how many balls I'll need if I want to make all the Debbie Bliss patterns in the book: SIXTY. OH BOY BANKRUPTCY HERE I COME!

nathalie, Saturday, 10 March 2007 07:30 (eighteen years ago)

Crappy camera phone shot of sxsw panel yesterday featuring members of the Austin Craft Mafia:

2nd from left: jenny hart, sublime stitching
3rd from left: vickie howell, host of knitty gritty.

crafting rock stars!

I just calculated how many balls I'll need if I want to make all the Debbie Bliss patterns in the book: SIXTY. OH BOY BANKRUPTCY HERE I COME!

try to find substitues! seriously I found the andean silk from knitpicks to be a perfect sub for debbie bliss cashmerino and it's only 3.29 a ball.

Ms Misery, Sunday, 11 March 2007 16:02 (eighteen years ago)

I figured out where I screwed up on the scarf, making it a bit easier to continue. Lesson learned: if you're doing something where you're changing stitches at the same place every time, use a marker. It also makes it easier to count (I counted 3 times for 3 different #s of stitches before I put the markers in, woo).

Nath, sounds like you need to find some discount yarn sellers!

The latest Knitty is very nice. The Ribena looks so smart, I definitely need to do it (also minus the separate sleeves).

patita, Monday, 12 March 2007 01:36 (eighteen years ago)

So, I'm a knitting idiot.

Today, I purchased all the accoutrements for the Little Devil Baby pants (mentioned upthread), and cast on my 70 stitches. Mind you, I messed up and the cast on stitches unraveled when I had about 4 stitches to go on the first K row. Great. So, I took a break, had an Edy's strawberry fruit bar, and read the pattern again. "Beg? What the hell does that mean!?" So, I went to look for v. 1 of the Stitch and Bitch book set (for the glossary) and my search efforts were fruitless. I then yelled at Ben for moving all of my craft books a few months ago. "You put all the coffee table books where my craft books SHOULD GO!" I then stomped off the computer (it's that time of the month, ladies), and did a search for "knitting beg." I then came to the sad realization of the meaning of "beg." Sadly, I came back to the living room and relayed the news to Ben, where he proceeded to laugh at me. "Well, I would have known what it was if I could have found the book I was looking for in the first place!"

Back to re-casting on my 70 stitches.

molly mummenschanz, Monday, 12 March 2007 02:59 (eighteen years ago)

I understand and sympathize, molly. I can't understand the reason for some knitting abbreviations. I know it saves a little printing space, but sometimes the brain just doesn't click.

patita, Monday, 12 March 2007 04:20 (eighteen years ago)

beg = beginning?

while i should be listening to geeks speak I've been designing a scarf in my head for my texan ex-pat friend. What's a good soft bulky yarn? I'm thinking like lamb's pride bulky but not so furry (ideally cheaper but I think that could be askng too much.)

Ms Misery, Monday, 12 March 2007 14:12 (eighteen years ago)

Just received the price of the Debbie Bliss yarn, about five euros. That's expensive, but, in my mind, still doable. I just don't want to knit with acrylic. I saw what that matinee cardigan I knitted (in pink acrylic) looks like with *proper* yarn and it's a completely different looking cardigan. BTW everyone keeps complimenting on said cardigan. :-)

I'm almost finished with the baby blanket. Just need to finish the adult cardigan and shawl and I'm off to knit baby garments. Hopefully by then I don't feel so sick anymore. :-( I was worrying I didn't have morning sickness, now I have it in a double trouble format. Urgh.

nathalie, Monday, 12 March 2007 15:10 (eighteen years ago)

Help me ILX! I don't know what to knit next. I polished off Branching Out a couple of weeks ago (really must get around to blocking it though) and now I'm stuck for a plan. The latest Knitty doesn't really inspire me, I'm afraid. Ribena will make my shoulders look humongous. I kind of fancy a go at a sock, but it scares me a bit. Has anyone tried and tested a really easy sock pattern?

Madchen, Monday, 12 March 2007 16:02 (eighteen years ago)

I want to do socks too but have yet to find a pattern that encourages me. if the sock wise here can suggest one, I'll sock-a-long with you!

Ms Misery, Monday, 12 March 2007 16:07 (eighteen years ago)

Thanks for all your help to a knitting novice. I bought the stitch n bitch book, which is really clear and some bamboo needles - so much better than the shiny metal ones! I have almost finished a rib scarf (from snb) which was going to be for me but when my husband saw that it actually looked half-decent it mysteriously turned into a gift for him... I also made him an mp3 cozy in seed/moss stitch which I think turned out pretty well.

The patterns in my baby book still look a bit hard so I'm going to practice a bit more before I start on those...

liz, Monday, 12 March 2007 17:33 (eighteen years ago)

Heh, the ribbed scarf ended up round my boyf's neck as well.

I'm thinking about trying these baby socks, just because they're small (and hopefully pretty quick) and there's a video clip of the heel turn.

Madchen, Monday, 12 March 2007 17:39 (eighteen years ago)

xpost Hold on, Liz, which baby book do you have?

nathalie, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 05:04 (eighteen years ago)

this one: Adorable Knits for Tiny Tots
. The patterns are v cute and probably not that hard but I haven't done anything with more than one colour yet so that's the next thing I want to learn.

I've knitted the sole of a cute slipper but am confused about how to cast on more stitches without it looking rubbish. That knittinghelp site has loads of videos that look helpful so I think I should be ok with that.

liz, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 10:44 (eighteen years ago)

If you're willing to shell out more money, then I'd suggest the Simple Baby Knits for Beginners (?) byDebbie Bliss. It's rrrreally good! She has lovely designs, the style is GREBT. I even ordered some balls for a CABLED DRESS. Am I bonkers or what? But I really want to make i

I made my order! About 24 balls. Not that *bad*. Only, now I have to stop ordering and start knitting. ;-)

nathalie, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 11:32 (eighteen years ago)

This has reminded me that I really wish Amazon would let you view the pictures in books like this so you can check out the designs. There wouldn't be copyright issues with that, would there? As long as the patterns aren't given? It's especially hard to judge a knitting book by its cover.

Madchen, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 13:17 (eighteen years ago)

Go to the Knitting Garden site, sometimes they do feature the pics/patterns. This is how I decided on one of the Debbie Bliss books. :-)

nathalie, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 13:48 (eighteen years ago)

liz, do you have to pick up stitches on the baby slipper? there's a site that has good videos demonstrating different techniques. I'll look for it later (when I'm on a wireless that's not constantly being dropped) if someone else doesn't have it.

Ms Misery, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 16:13 (eighteen years ago)

http://www.knittinghelp.com/knitting/basic_techniques/misc.php

this site has a video!

nathalie, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 16:16 (eighteen years ago)

Turning ridge! What does this mean!? I check my McCalls and Reader's Digest needlework books, and nothing! Could it be one row of purling to screw up the sk stitch?

molly mummenschanz, Wednesday, 14 March 2007 01:27 (eighteen years ago)

molly, what pattern are you doing that has 'turning ridge'?

tokyo rosemary, Wednesday, 14 March 2007 14:33 (eighteen years ago)

Oh, I checked the devil pants pattern. It looks like you are going to fold that first inch down and sew down, and then thread the drawstring through it.

K on WS = Purled row on RS

tokyo rosemary, Wednesday, 14 March 2007 14:35 (eighteen years ago)

Oh! Thank you so much! That makes much more sense.

Also, what is involved in "turning", i.e. *K8, turn*

The 1st stitch'n bitch is MIA, and my other books aren't the best for reference.

molly mummenschanz, Wednesday, 14 March 2007 14:44 (eighteen years ago)

Well, that sort of turning is a different sort of turning than the one in a turning ridge.

Instead of knitting to the end of the row, after knitting 8 stitches, you would start knitting/purling/whatever in the opposite direction. Sometimes they have you wrapping the stitches, but sometimes that's in the intructions, too. It's for making short rows, for darts, or sock heels, or other curves.

tokyo rosemary, Wednesday, 14 March 2007 15:49 (eighteen years ago)

Ahh, I see! Thank you! This is my first attempt at a garment.

molly mummenschanz, Wednesday, 14 March 2007 15:52 (eighteen years ago)

I've just turned the heel on my toe-up socks and I'm pleased to say that I have BANISHED the horrible holey heel demons! I used a "double wrapping" method on the short rows which seems to have helped hide the holes, although I will say that both sides do look a little different. But who cares! They don't have holes! The double wrap method was middlingly OK to do - I think I missed quite a few wraps but I fudged it and it seems to be OK.

So now I can just work on the ankle! Toe up socks = grebt! The thought of casting on a new one fails to terrify me! Toe up is the future!! Now if only I can get that figure 8 cast on a bit tighter - maybe I will try one of the provisional cast on methods for the next sock and who cares if toes are different on each sock. Er maybe not then...

I will upload some photos when I'm back home.

Sarah, Thursday, 15 March 2007 14:00 (eighteen years ago)

Incidentally NEW THREAD ANYONE?

Sarah, Thursday, 15 March 2007 14:00 (eighteen years ago)

I say go for a new thread. I shall save my post.

Ms Misery, Thursday, 15 March 2007 14:02 (eighteen years ago)

Done! Shall we lock this one? Er, has anyone got the keys... you didn't lose them in the yarn stash did you... we'll be here all week...

Sarah, Thursday, 15 March 2007 16:24 (eighteen years ago)

I think you have to post on the mod board to get this locked. . .

Ms Misery, Thursday, 15 March 2007 16:24 (eighteen years ago)

one year passes...

So anyone here still knit? I'm making a few things. Yes, I have a tendency to start more than I finish. I am making a REALLY HARD aran cap for Elisabeth.

stevienixed, Thursday, 11 September 2008 18:58 (seventeen years ago)

I'm still knitting! Although also hard-pressed to finish more things than I start. I'm doing an Obama bag which I've screwed up and I want to do an entrelac scarf.

Susan, Thursday, 11 September 2008 19:02 (seventeen years ago)

My knitting club is back in full effect since last month. I can finally knit in the round.

genital grinder (roxymuzak), Thursday, 11 September 2008 19:45 (seventeen years ago)

Susan, what is your ravelry name?

Am trying to clean, and have made room in my closer to put all the bags of unfinished projects YIKES. There are also bags of finished projects, too.

tokyo rosemary, Thursday, 11 September 2008 19:52 (seventeen years ago)

I am going to the Mets Stitch N Pitch with my favorite Mets fan in two weeks, although I am still waiting to hear from the yarn shop about when the goodie bags and the tickets have come in.
