I used to have a screensaver on my computer with lots of photos of capybaras. One night, though, after looking at it just before going to sleep, I had the most terrifying nightmare that I was trapped in a car with giant guinea pigs who were clawing and biting me. I have to only look at capybaras in the daytime now.

During the Capybara ritual, the Matis Indians create an atmosphere that is not only visually stimulating but auditory as well. They imitate the sounds of the capybara. In addition, they imitate the actions of this native Amazonian rodent by running and hopping as a capybara would do. Interestingly, only men and boys participate in this ceremony with women and girls being excluded.

probably 8 or 9 years ago, at the tennessee valley fair, i paid the 50 cents to see the "giant rat." just out of curiosity. there was this huge sideshow billboard with a gigantic rodent with a long ropy tail and big sharp teeth and bright red eyes. so i walked back past the ticket collector, and there was a wire cage on the grass there, and inside was a capybara. not looking at all fierce or fearsome. i stood there for a moment or two, and the capybara looked up at me and gave a big snorting sigh -- "whooof" -- and looked back down at the ground. i felt very bad for it and briefly fantasized about contacting the local peta kids to stage a midnight capybara rescue. but i didn't.

us_odd_bunny_lady (tipsy mothra), Sunday, 28 June 2009 07:28 (fifteen years ago)

why'd you feel bad for it? it's not like they roam hundreds of square miles like some kind of fuckin noble majestic ass tiger. it IS a giant rat. it's probably just happy as a clam living with carnies

Unit of Measure

All can be measured by the standard of the capybara.
Everyone is lesser than or greater than the capybara.
Everything is taller or shorter than the capybara.
Everything is mistaken for a Brazilian dance craze
more or less frequently than the capybara.
Everyone eats greater or fewer watermelons
than the capybara. Everyone eats more or less bark.
Everyone barks more than or less than the capybara,
who also whistles, clicks, grunts, and emits what is known
as his alarm squeal. Everyone is more or less alarmed
than a capybara, who—because his back legs
are longer than his front legs—feels like
he is going downhill at all times.
Everyone is more or less a master of grasses
than the capybara. Or going by the scientific name,
more or less Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris—
or, going by the Greek translation, more or less
water hog. Everyone is more or less
of a fish than the capybara, defined as the outermost realm
of fishdom by the 16th-century Catholic Church.
Everyone is eaten more or less often for Lent than
the capybara. Shredded, spiced, and served over plantains,
everything tastes more or less like pork
than the capybara. Before you decide that you are
greater than or lesser than a capybara, consider
that while the Brazilian capybara breeds only once a year,
the Venezuelan variety mates continuously.
Consider the last time you mated continuously.
Consider the year of your childhood when you had
exactly as many teeth as the capybara—
twenty—and all yours fell out, and all his
kept growing. Consider how his skin stretches
in only one direction. Accept that you are stretchier
than the capybara. Accept that you have foolishly
distributed your eyes, ears, and nostrils
all over your face. Accept that now you will never be able
to sleep underwater. Accept that the fish
will never gather to your capybara body offering
their soft, finned love. One of us, they say, one of us,
but they will not say it to you.

Possibly wise--zoology usually requires biology, which usually requires doing horrible things to rats/frogs/etc

I'm seriously considering doing the elephant rescue volunteering thing when I get my long service leave: you got to a park in kenya for a month and just help out with the orphaned elephant babies, etc

But definitely doo the zoo volunteering thing!

Fish and Game officials say they will allow the animal to roam. The only warning they have issued is directed at the humans who might want to hunt it: don't.

comments are of course highly lol

Leave it to our Fish and Game Department. Capybaras have gone feral in Louisiana. Or since they are not a domestic animal - I should say they have established breeding populations in that state. But here in California, the only state besides Hawaii where ferrets are illegal, ferrets can't get a break. We've given the F&G Commissioners a preliminary EIR as they requested. They won't review it until they go to notice, they won't go to notice until they review it. So for ferrets in California its 1984. It is time to recall F&G Commissioner Jim Kellogg and restore some sanity and responsiblity to our state government. Legalizeferrets.org

I'm sorry but "And that's the story of the day I saw a capybara cumface :(" is amazing.

ENBB, Wednesday, 28 November 2012 01:10 (twelve years ago)

Briefly considered using "capybara cumface" as a screenname, decided the memories it dredged up were too traumatic.

bizarro gazzara, Wednesday, 28 November 2012 09:27 (twelve years ago)

Oh I totally thought about how I could make it into one but then decided against it as well.

two crickets sassing each other (dowd), Wednesday, 10 August 2016 20:07 (eight years ago)

australia has a "problem" with kangaroos on golf courses, right?

they just need to populate the golf course with an excess of the capybara's natural predator, problem solved. especially if that predator also eats golfers
