Some dastardly bastards have put it out there somewhere.

Let's hope for a reasonable explanation as to how Jack got out of China.

Begins on the 14th. The rolling of eyes begins now.

The Ultimate Conclusion (lokar), Sunday, 7 January 2007 05:29 (eighteen years ago)

There's a DVD of the first four episodes. I'm downloading it now.

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Sunday, 7 January 2007 10:01 (eighteen years ago)

Let's hope for a reasonable explanation as to how Jack got out of China.

I thought this season was going to involve him getting out of China.

Alba (Alba), Sunday, 7 January 2007 10:45 (eighteen years ago)

Me too, would've been a nice change of emphasis. Instead it looks like we'll be getting boring old bombs/nerve gas in LA again (not that this'll stop me becoming utterly addicted to it once more).

chap (chap), Sunday, 7 January 2007 14:45 (eighteen years ago)

I wish this torrent would hurry up.

Alba (Alba), Sunday, 7 January 2007 14:51 (eighteen years ago)

He was still in China in the ludicrously unbelievable prequel. Though, like the last one, it was pretty much a car commercial rather than providing any actual plot development. And I imagine, like the last one, it'll jump to several months after prequel action with brief explanation of what's happened since the end of the last series, and the action of the prequel will have no relevance at all.

I heart Chloe. Her ridiculous plot-device husband is coming back this year too, isn't he?

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 7 January 2007 16:40 (eighteen years ago)

I am scared that Chloe will die one day.

chap (chap), Sunday, 7 January 2007 16:57 (eighteen years ago)

i am so hyped.

prequel and 1st 2 eps on download now...

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Sunday, 7 January 2007 19:06 (eighteen years ago)

Is this going to get all spoilery shortly? Cos I plan to wait and watch it the old fashioned way.

chap (chap), Sunday, 7 January 2007 19:16 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, I'm going Sky One with it because it's only going to be a couple of days behind the States. Though getting this four episode thingie early is tempting, it'll just leave a longer gap until episode five. And the gap in Lost is killing me right now. I can't do that again to myself. But I might read spoilers in this thread! Oh noes! What to do?

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 7 January 2007 19:28 (eighteen years ago)

pls label spoilers!

teeny (teeny), Sunday, 7 January 2007 19:49 (eighteen years ago)

haha ok this show.

teeny (teeny), Sunday, 7 January 2007 22:24 (eighteen years ago)

hey what's the prequel, is that web-only?

teeny (teeny), Sunday, 7 January 2007 22:48 (eighteen years ago)

They showed it recently on TV here in the UK. It's kinda lame. It's on YouTube though.

Time Warner and my local Fox affiliate have gotten into some sort of idiotic pissing match which has led to me NO LONGER HAVING ANY FOX STATION. Fuckers. No matter who's actually right, I'm going to blame this on the cable company cause they're always huge dicks.

Anyway, thank you internet and bittorrent for probably solving this problem for me.

I watched Seasons 1 & 2 when they first aired and am frankly astounded that it's into its sixth season - it seemed like they were scraping the bottom of the barrel in season 2. Is it really still good?

franny (frannyglass), Tuesday, 9 January 2007 15:51 (eighteen years ago)

I remember season 2 being great! They are increasingly "more of the same", but still entertaining. The last season was the best since 2, I think.

"Mr. President, the terrorists have captured every cute six-year-old girl in the United States and are holding them in a gigantic net sack suspended from the George Washington Bridge."

"WHAT?"

"The tattoos..."

""

"The tattoos spell the launch codes for a system of nuclear weapons aimed at every Wal-Mart in the world"

"Get me Jack Bauer"

Euai Kapaui (tracerhand), Tuesday, 9 January 2007 16:48 (eighteen years ago)

there was a slavoj zizek article when guantanamo bay happened (i five years ago) saying the thing with torture is, yeah, we can imagine using it if it was a simple 'torture this guy or five million people die' choice -- but only because we didn't elevate it into a normal operating principle, that even while doing it we acknowledged it was wrong. '24' makes this a permanent reality.

i'm going to toerrent, i think.

the original hauntology blogging crew (Enrique), Tuesday, 9 January 2007 16:51 (eighteen years ago)

i watched 5 seasons of 24 in 2 months and now when I watch other shows I get pissed off about how they didn't secure the perimeter first, or how they apprehend people without following them first.

ian johnson's mom + jack bauer 2gether 4evah (Carey), Tuesday, 9 January 2007 17:02 (eighteen years ago)

When I watch 24 I get pissed off when they don't follow the same logic that they used just two hours ago. "Sir, I am convinced that if we follow this man he will lead us to the terrorists!" vs. "Sir we absolutely cannot let this man escape, we have to take him in for interrogation NOW!" derrr

Euai Kapaui (tracerhand), Tuesday, 9 January 2007 17:11 (eighteen years ago)

Zizek wrote a Guardian thing about 24 and torture last year, no?

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 9 January 2007 18:55 (eighteen years ago)

zizek repeats himself now and then.

the original hauntology blogging crew (Enrique), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 09:08 (eighteen years ago)

Oh, I didn't realise the "'24' makes this a permanent reality." was him, not you.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 09:21 (eighteen years ago)

oh right it was me but maybe he said it too.

the original hauntology blogging crew (Enrique), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 09:22 (eighteen years ago)

spookily enough, my colleague slavoj said it exactly one times years ago:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/comment/story/0,,1682760,00.html

he inserts a typically insane flourish whereby it's better if we do things without talking about them. lapsed catholics amirite.

Chloe is such a hideous little tree frog.

do i have to draw you a diaphragm (Rock Hardy), Monday, 15 January 2007 01:44 (eighteen years ago)

pure right-wing masturbation fantasy

Putting it mildly.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 15 January 2007 01:47 (eighteen years ago)

Ned, is the line referred to in that story between civic responsibility and commerce or are those two linked? What ever does the "senior Bush official" mean?

Guymauve (Guymauve), Monday, 15 January 2007 02:15 (eighteen years ago)

Part of the mystery. (The leaning of the series the way it does is no surprise; its creators are open Bush fan(atic)s and all -- if that quote from one of them is legit, and I don't doubt it, I see this as symptomatic of the kind of reflexive 'why don't you people GET it?' whining from the right now that their star is waning.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 15 January 2007 02:23 (eighteen years ago)

am I the only one who loves this show but hate jack bauer? I can't stand the guy. do we really need him to be a superhero-ish person? it's gone too far imo.

Lovelace (Lovelace), Monday, 15 January 2007 03:54 (eighteen years ago)

Not having ridden the subway in LA, I gotta ask - do they actually have people who collect tickets? This seems preposterously old-timey and inefficient.

joygoat (joygoat), Monday, 15 January 2007 07:08 (eighteen years ago)

it's probably like they have here, you buy a ticket, pass it through a machine that timestamps it, and employees randomly check to make sure you didn't board without a ticket. Sounds inefficient but lots of rail systems do it so I guess it works out.

teeny (teeny), Monday, 15 January 2007 15:31 (eighteen years ago)

Lovelace you are not the only one. I don't love the show any more, though.

Euai Kapaui (tracerhand), Monday, 15 January 2007 15:41 (eighteen years ago)

he's no superhero. he's more Judge Dredd than Batman

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Monday, 15 January 2007 15:43 (eighteen years ago)

this has put the idea of '24' with the title music from 'scrubs' into my head, with hilarious consequences.

the original hauntology blogging crew (Enrique), Monday, 15 January 2007 15:44 (eighteen years ago)

i'm stoked.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Monday, 15 January 2007 15:55 (eighteen years ago)

also it was wierd cognitive dissonance when i had to accept the dude that played kumar as a terrorist, but he did a good job.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Monday, 15 January 2007 16:07 (eighteen years ago)

I've watched the first four, and have the first 12 minutes of episode five downloaded too (dunno where from - my colleague passes these things on to me).

Emma wont let us watch it.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Monday, 15 January 2007 16:11 (eighteen years ago)

it's probably like they have here, you buy a ticket, pass it through a machine that timestamps it, and employees randomly check to make sure you didn't board without a ticket.

Not even that when it comes to LA! It's timestamped in the system when you buy the ticket. Then either there's a random check on the train car or sometimes there's someone checking as you leave the station. It is all rather curious.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 15 January 2007 16:15 (eighteen years ago)

The LA Subway doesn't have official ticket checkers, per se, but MTA cops will occasionally pass through asking to see tickets if you look suspicious (meaning 'homeless' rather than 'like a terrorist,' in my experience on the gold line).

I've never been asked to show a ticket in at least 100 rides.

(x-post with Ned)

Also, Chloe is such a hideous little tree frog.
-- do i have to draw you a diaphragm (crump...), January 15th, 2007.
?!?!?!?!?!?

How DARE you?!!!!

I just finished 1 through 4. Ready to get discussin'.

Tiki Theater Xymposium (Bent Over at the Arclight), Monday, 15 January 2007 16:21 (eighteen years ago)

In London they come around with a little handheld scanner (cos most people have electronic "Oyster cards"), pass it over your card and it lights up green if you've touched into the station, red if you haven't. It's pretty spooky imagining this control process happening in some other context.

Euai Kapaui (tracerhand), Monday, 15 January 2007 16:31 (eighteen years ago)

the only time the LA subway ever gets used is on 24. If I were a terrorist and i wanted to inflict terror I'd bomb something more than seven people know exists.

anyway, this opener was terrible, and that's the first time i've thought that about this show. It's kind of cool to see Milo back but that's all.

kyle (akmonday), Monday, 15 January 2007 17:50 (eighteen years ago)

Yes, it usually hits the ground running for the first few shows and spins out into inevitable ludicrousness by ep 9 or 10.

Whereas this time it's just completely idiotic from the get-go. Even by the series own standards, it seemed kinda OTT.

Also: Star Trek doctor! (Clearly he's going to die very soon.)

Chuck_Tatum (Chuck_Tatum), Monday, 15 January 2007 18:21 (eighteen years ago)

Also also: all-new idiotic Palmer brethren!

Chuck_Tatum (Chuck_Tatum), Monday, 15 January 2007 18:22 (eighteen years ago)

he's the only likable person on the show so far. (star trek doctor)

kyle (akmonday), Monday, 15 January 2007 18:23 (eighteen years ago)

i like how he's so nice and normal seeming but they thought he was the big bad terrorist nasty, while fayed seemed so much more obviously evil. also, how many episodes until we find out that assad is actually bad?

also, i don't care about this president palmer.

also, last season was too good, they should have ended with that if they couldn't match it.

kyle (akmonday), Monday, 15 January 2007 18:24 (eighteen years ago)

The show's clearly turning into a parody of itself, but I sort of admire how grim they're making it, even if it's not very enjoyable to watch. (Which is weird, as I normally love right-wing action porn.)

I imagine Dr Bashir will be needlessly killed off before he gets the chance at any character development.

Presumably the real big bad hasn't turned up yet. James Cromwell is due to appear as Jack's dad -- maybe it's him?

Chuck_Tatum (Chuck_Tatum), Monday, 15 January 2007 18:36 (eighteen years ago)

And, um.

Chuck_Tatum (Chuck_Tatum), Monday, 15 January 2007 18:38 (eighteen years ago)

alexander siddig, i love that guy! i hope he sticks around for awhile. he's cornering the market on "non-terrorists targeted by u.s. in airstrikes" (cf. syriana).

‘•’u (gear), Monday, 15 January 2007 18:40 (eighteen years ago)

clearly turning into a parody of itself

Now I love '24' and all, but I'm pretty sure it was a parody of itself during the pitching-to-networks phase. Not to trot out this old standby, but KIM BAUER CHASED BY COUGAR.

Tiki Theater Xymposium (Bent Over at the Arclight), Monday, 15 January 2007 18:57 (eighteen years ago)

kim bauer running around in a cheerleader outfit! this was ridiculous from day one. i think it's part of the fun.

‘•’u (gear), Monday, 15 January 2007 19:03 (eighteen years ago)

Oh, absolutely, but even by 24's usual standards, the seasoner opener was pretty daft. The Rush Limbaugh-does-GI Joe parody of the London subway bombings ("Allah Akhbar... kaboom... etc") was almost like something out of a Zucker-Abrahams movie.

I did enjoy it, mind.

Chuck_Tatum (Chuck_Tatum), Monday, 15 January 2007 19:08 (eighteen years ago)

it took jack bauer, what, one hour to go from being led out of the plane to TCB on the subway?

i liked it when he went all romero on that one terrorist.

‘•’u (gear), Monday, 15 January 2007 19:10 (eighteen years ago)

Exactly the painful right-wing bukkake I was expecting, but amazingly I still liked it, mostly because Jack's gone all emo, though my left-wing wetdream would be for Jack to get killed so that we can watch the further adventures of Dr. Bashir.

I'm still waiting for the first Jack Bauer DAMN IT! of the season - it doesn't feel like 24 if JB hasn't said those 2 lil words. TRUST ME

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 18 January 2007 04:21 (eighteen years ago)

finally caught up with these four episodes.

pro:

return of heavy split screen use (especially the endings)
chloe RED hair
kumar
sean callery's score (still very impressive)
assad and nadia (michelle redux), good additions so far
curtis with PERSONALITY

con:

boring terrorist plan (although there hasn't been an innovative/cohesive one since season 3, in my opinion)
sandra palmer plotline already annoying
milo (kudos on the six year continuity, but I still don't like the character)
torture/violence scenes hideously graphic (although the train bomber/nuclear bomb scenes were well done)

I'm sort of indifferent about Wayne Palmer so far. I'm hoping the rest of the day will involve everyone fleeing the LA area to get away from the nuclear fallout.

do i have to draw you a diaphragm (Rock Hardy), Sunday, 21 January 2007 20:39 (eighteen years ago)

not nec -even within the show's own logic (they had an emp thing go off some season back) the range of emp effects could be as little as 1/2 mile or so. jack is easily further away than that, and the cellular network would work around the hole

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Monday, 22 January 2007 00:03 (eighteen years ago)

This stuff with Jack's family is great! You can sort of see the level of estrangement Jack has with the world when he can freely torture his brother on a dime.

this was kind of a dud episode (Cyril O'Reilly, G-Man) until the end. "You're hurting me"/"Trust me, I'm not" - that's what makes this show worthwhile! Not Presidential intrigue.

i was wondering if jack knew something shady about his brother re: last season or if he just hates him so much he's willing to torture him for some basic info about their father.

‘•’u (gear), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 18:00 (eighteen years ago)

the problem with 24 is that after i watch a season i basically forget mostly everything about it. so if someone wants to give a brief recap as to why i recognize the brother, i'd appreciate it.

The Ultimate Conclusion (lokar), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 19:30 (eighteen years ago)

the brother was running tings last season. he was in that weird room with the other headset phone dudes, making calls, staying updated on what was happening, etc. the president was controlling peter weller and the brother was controlling the president. oh shit and the brother was killed by robocop as played by peter weller. wow, that's strange.

roger goodell (gear), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 19:33 (eighteen years ago)

Ah, of course, I thought I remembered him from his evil mass media dungeon, but I couldn't connect him. How odd that it turns out he's Jack's brother. Hmm...I'm really not sure if I like it or not.

The Ultimate Conclusion (lokar), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 20:11 (eighteen years ago)

Right, I'm up to date with you dudes.

How come Jack calls people and they get his mobile number from him calling them? Surely as some kind of top CTU dude his number wouldn't show up on any caller ID thing?

MOST STATIC MUSHROOM CLOUD EVER!

Doesn't Kim live in Valencia?

How come brother and dad and that were all "I thought you'd been kidnapped by the Chinese dudes"? Shouldn't they be all "I thought you were dead" - given that his sudden resurrection was a big old secret in series 5 prior to his disappearance on the SS Chinese Torture?

Josh (son of brother) is totally going to be Jack's son.

Where's Audrey? Where's her suddenly-brought-back-from-cliff-diving-car dad? Where's Mike Novick? Where's Aaron "last seen sneaking off to see Martha" Pierce?

Er, some other stuff. Just watched eps 3-6 back to back and spent most of it going "WTF?!?!?! THAT'S WRONG!!! THAT CAN'T HAPPEN?!?!? EH!?!?!?" very loudly, much to the chagrin of my husband.

So anyone still watching this?

wtf pres. Palmer?? this had better be a hoax, or a dream, or an imaginary story. I'm not happy about the end of yesterday's episode one jot.

Slumpman, Tuesday, 3 April 2007 22:48 (eighteen years ago)

Yes, just when this show seems like it can't get any nuttier...

I suppose this is supposed to be Palmer overdosing on adrenaline. Or maybe the doctor put testosterone in by mistake.

Most crazy batshit scene of all = Doyle with Nadia. "Yes, I've read the Koran, and the Bible, and the Tao Te Ching; whatever I could get my hands on".

Alba, Tuesday, 3 April 2007 23:09 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah that was off too, but not as bad as Gredenko's i believe in our cause enough to CHOP OFF MY OWN ARM but actually now i'll doublecross you and hobble off to die beard-down in some wet sand.

such a confusing episode

Slumpman, Tuesday, 3 April 2007 23:13 (eighteen years ago)

Oh, I thought they chopped it off for him. I've kind of given up on trying to make sense of the baddies' motives.

Alba, Tuesday, 3 April 2007 23:26 (eighteen years ago)

Alba OTM re: Doyle & Nadia talking about God. "Hey, these romantic interludes aren't awkward & corny enough - how can we REALLY WTF viewers?"

This shit was ridiculous, even for 24 standards. I almost thought THE TWEEST would be Mrs. Buchanan popping the SoD after they had their make-up pow-wow. But, no, it's a Roid Ragin' Brain Hemmoragin' Preznit Palmer Jr. following through on the nukey-nuke while Mr. Veep plays hand-footsie with his Breakin' The Law Chief of Staff.

David R., Wednesday, 4 April 2007 13:43 (eighteen years ago)

Dur - Lennox is the Chief of Staff. I'm gonna go ask for amnesty.

David R., Wednesday, 4 April 2007 13:48 (eighteen years ago)

Nobody's mentioned how DHS Boss Lady Karen "Willie Mays" Hayes was all the wifey "Oh big strong husband whom I outrank by 10 times over, I'M SCARED! WHAT IF IT'S ALL MY FAULT?? I AM SUCH AN EXAMPLE OF FEMALE INDECISION!!"

Leee, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 16:36 (eighteen years ago)

i wonder how logan's run to the hospital ended. oh and jack bauer: 5 min of screentime in the last 3 episodes combined?

rps, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 17:20 (eighteen years ago)

I thought Karen's whimpering was a bit over the top, but to be fair, it would kind of suck if the country went to nuclear war just because you were intimidated by Peter MacNicol earlier in the day.

This season's been pretty awful, but this was the first episode that really felt like it was written by a drunk person. The only reason I watch anymore is to see if Tom makes any more hilariously pouty faces during White House briefings.

reddening, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 20:25 (eighteen years ago)

this is the first season i've watched solely for 'wtf lol' stuff. i foresee a return to 'wtf lol' + 'awesome!' next season. the only awesomeness this season has been whenever peter macnicol fucks over the bad guys.

rps, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 20:29 (eighteen years ago)

yeah, I'd say this season has been drifting off ever since episode 5 or 6. logan, assad, and kumar (way back when) have been bright spots but it seems like they are going through the motions with a lot of the conflicts now.

Michael F Gill, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 21:37 (eighteen years ago)

otm, this season is pants. the last couple of seasons have peaked too early, so perhaps a late rally of decent episodes can partially redeem it, but the plotting/character "development" has been so inept this time around, i fear the worst.

Alba, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 06:38 (eighteen years ago)

This is likely the worst season of any serial television show I've followed in the last five years. Even the Nine showed more promise before it got canned than this. Fortunately that freed up Audrey to come back, though. Too bad she's had a mental break.

While I hope that Wayne Palmer dies, I really don't want Daniels to carry his presidency into Day 7. But at the same time, it means the US will have gone through a ridiculous number of presidents in a very short amount of time. They've really screwed this up. KAREN 4 PREZ!

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 06:52 (eighteen years ago)

Who gives a damn about rubbish old Audrey, anyway? I was so disappointed when she wasn't dead, and then, worse, saving her life became some kind of plot goal! Wayne Palmer must go, too.

Alba, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 07:06 (eighteen years ago)

how many presidents now in six seasons?

1) whoever was prez while david palmer was running in season 1
2) david palmer
3) his VP (temporarily, at least twice)
4) that one dude from 'unhappily ever after'
5) charles logan
6) hal gardner
7) wayne palmer
8) cy tolliver

Rock Hardy, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 17:17 (eighteen years ago)

Still not quite as bad as the third season, though. I'm very surprised they didn't let off a second nuke.

Chuck_Tatum, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 17:35 (eighteen years ago)

no, i think this is the worst. i still think next season the show will get back on its feet though there's something to be said for the notion that there just isn't anyone left in the show to give a shit about. the whole "we'll kill anyone at anytime!" thing is alright but now there's just a couple of characters left the viewer cares about and they had to bring back eric balfour to work the familiarity angle. (actually that "cares about" point probably doesn't even apply to jack anymore!)

félix pié, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 17:43 (eighteen years ago)

This is definitely worse than season 3. Whether it's worse than season 4 I'm yet to decide. I think it probably is.

Alba, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 18:05 (eighteen years ago)

Season 4 was great!

Even Chloe is boring this time.

Chuck_Tatum, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 18:08 (eighteen years ago)

Season 4 was atrocious. The plot just seemed to consist of: "We need this vital piece of information urgently - we must torture someone to get it", "Now we need another vital piece of information - we must torture somone else", "OK, we tortured the wrong person, now we will torture someone else".

Alba, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 18:13 (eighteen years ago)

At least Season 4 had Tony and Michelle.

Maybe that's the biggest problem with this season? No Tony, no CRED. Also, killing off Curtis under such a forced, ridiculous set of circumstances really went a long way in damaging viewer ties to the story this season.

Also, Jack's dad. Hello! You don't bring in James Cromwell just to have him disappear altogether for no good reason. He was just beginning to get really nasty and evil and then *poof!* he's gone.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 18:41 (eighteen years ago)

Michelle's crappiness (and don't give me that hottness defence) almost cancelled out Tony's coolness. Was season 4 the one where Tony went bad to save Michelle? That was annoying.

Alba, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 18:43 (eighteen years ago)

Also, Jack's dad. Hello! You don't bring in James Cromwell just to have him disappear altogether for no good reason. He was just beginning to get really nasty and evil and then *poof!* he's gone.

Yeah, this season wasn't so bad at the start. It's really gone done the dumper. I guess they figure they've got Powers Boothe instead.

Alba, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 18:45 (eighteen years ago)

i will not stand for insults of michelle dessler (r.i.p.)

félix pié, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 18:47 (eighteen years ago)

Season 5 was abysmal, all-time worst and most frustrating.
I can't remember what season 4 was about, though I seem to recall this is when I "got" Chloe.
Season 3 was easily most boring.

Michelle = boring
Tony = boring
Jack = boring
Chloe = \^_^/
Buchanan = boring
Curtis = boring
Audrey = boring
SecDef Jr. = lol gay
Paul Raines = true hero

Leee, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 18:50 (eighteen years ago)

i wonder why the hell jack didn't keep after that hot one he saved multiple times in season 2, she was great. and hot. he's still pining over audrey aka "starring jodie foster as nell", which i don't get. she looks and acts like some boring folkie who happens to be wearing a power suit.

félix pié, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 18:54 (eighteen years ago)

xp

Season 5 abysmal? What you smoking?!

Jean Smart was killer, Aaron was a hero, and the whole Prez Logan goes from twerp to evil mastermind was great tv. Unfortunately, all three characters were completely neutered this year.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 18:57 (eighteen years ago)

i assume logan is currently somewhere on life support

félix pié, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 19:01 (eighteen years ago)

I was smoking THE TRUTH, okay? For whatever reason, that season was my breaking point for suspending my disbelief, possibly cos they upped the either/orness of its politics.

Jean Smart was aight even if she kept getting pegged as the Victim, but Aaron is such a wooden board, and Logan was like, COME ON.

Leee, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 19:03 (eighteen years ago)

Also, I miss Mike. Where for art thou, Mike?

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 19:07 (eighteen years ago)

I'm with Johnny - the last season was something of a return to form. Logan was awesome!

Alba, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 19:07 (eighteen years ago)

(as was Martha)

Alba, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 19:08 (eighteen years ago)

i think the need to have white house intrigue is killing the show this year. less is more with that sort of story angle.

félix pié, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 19:08 (eighteen years ago)

God, this is all making me realise how superlame Wayne Palmer is as a character, let alone president.

Alba, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 19:09 (eighteen years ago)

Don't be surprised if, in Season 7, the staff at CTU works in pitch black darkness while wearing nightvision goggles. This low-lighting is getting completely out of hand.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 19:21 (eighteen years ago)

they need to have an office without shadowy hallways, for sure. also, if i worked in counter terrorism and they wanted to transfer me to the l.a. office, i'd be all like, "oh right the place which has been bombed, nerve-gassed, and where if you work there longer than three years you're either wrongly accused and tortured by your superiors, killed by terrorists or traitorous colleagues, and every day have to negotiate a minefield of office politics and surreptitious sex? no thanks."

félix pié, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 19:24 (eighteen years ago)

I'm doing a forced march through this season just so I can say I've done it (I gave up after five or six eps last season), but seriously, this show is the worst shit ever. And Chloe is still an ugly little lemon-sucking monkeyfaced thing.

Rock Hardy, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 19:26 (eighteen years ago)

Trying to do that with this season is hard enough on people who like the show anyway, so you must be in anguish.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 19:38 (eighteen years ago)

i do it for the hilarity. i was going to try a drinking game revolving around dumb shit/24 cliches for each episode, but i realized by the time the show was over i'd be in a coma.

félix pié, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 19:39 (eighteen years ago)

Wow, and I thought this season couldn't get any lower.

The part where Daniels just started bluntly blabbering "ugh, I slept with her too! um...why did i do it? Uh...that was stupid!" could be the worst scene they've ever done. The surprised look on Lenox's face was amazing and apt, as if Powers Booth had suddenly decided to do a live improv and the producers decided to keep it.

I have to repeat what I've said upthread, the characters just stink this year, and everytime I'm finding someone interesting or empathetic they've ditched them.

Michael F Gill, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 02:13 (eighteen years ago)

I really think if the actors/characters are good, it can override most of the lame plot recycling and eyerolling twists.

This season started so auspiciously, so much potential with Assad, Kumar, Jack's brother and Father, Logans, and even Curtis, but they've all been ditched. Even Buchanan's gone now and we're left with such bores like Nadia (Michelle redux), Milo (all my lovers are rejecting me!), and zombie Audrey (your mother died when you were *NINE*). I never expected Doyle to grow on me but he's the only one stepping up/getting good lines at the moment.

And Mary Lynn Rajskub (one of people magazine's most beautiful people, just edging out the singer from Fall Out Boy) has been hilarious on talk shows and doing stand up, but she's has been given anything to do really and has been 90% non-snarky. Maybe she'll be heading off soon.

Michael F Gill, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 02:28 (eighteen years ago)

And the transitioning from the Nuclear bombs plot to the Chinese plot was so random. As if Cheng was on the phone saying "put me through to CTU the moment the suitcase nukes are secured!"

I was actually cheering when James Heller came back at the end of tonight's show, it reminded me of the glory days of season 4 (the second worst season!)

Michael F Gill, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 02:35 (eighteen years ago)

Also, anyone think Veep's enemy combatant girlfriend looks like Angela from the Office?

Michael F Gill, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 02:59 (eighteen years ago)

Not really, but only because I recognize her from that miserable Invasion show (well, actually just the miserable Invasion commercials).

I'm committed now, though. Only 3 hours left.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 04:07 (eighteen years ago)

Seriously, Tom Lennox's crazyfaces are the best thing about this show. When the Veep told him he slept with Lisa, he did a full gamut from "What the hell?" to "I am going to vomit all over my shoes" to "Maybe sucking on this file folder will calm my stomach." I don't even remember what the Veep said, I was so entertained.

Also, Heller's "you make everyone die, Jack!" was slightly undermined by the whole "I drove my car off a cliff and lived" thing.

reddening, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 05:37 (eighteen years ago)

When the Veep told him he slept with Lisa, he did a full gamut from "What the hell?" to "I am going to vomit all over my shoes" to "Maybe sucking on this file folder will calm my stomach."

i referred to this as his 'why am i dripping with goo' moment

maura, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 12:12 (eighteen years ago)

If Jack promised Heller that he'd live, Heller would be spread across the rocks @ the bottom of that cliff.

Peter McNichol & Chad Lowe (& Dr. Bashir) (& the Buchanan / Hayes Power Hour) (WHEN THEY'RE NOT PITCHING WOO FFS SAVE IT FOR PEACE TIME ASSHOLES) have been the saving graces of this season. But there ain't much to save.

FYI: they're punishing the Veep's Chief of Staff because she guest-starred on an episode of Studio 60 earlier this year (where she actually had more than the 5 lines of dialogue she's had all 20+ hours on this show so far).

David R., Tuesday, 1 May 2007 13:12 (eighteen years ago)

That was the most useless episode of 24 I've seen.

hahaha Milo is so emo.

Milo: I saw the way you were looking at Doyle.
Nadia: Milo, we're in the middle of a terrorist crisis, and about to be ambushed by Chinese thugs. I don't have to time to talk about my feelings.
Milo: But my devotion to you runs deeper than Doyle! Let me prove it! [martyrs himself]

Michael F Gill, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 02:11 (eighteen years ago)

milo, she's kind of a bitch, o why did you do it??

wtf at CTU--again, for the 10th time--being the most porous, assaultable, least effective workplace in history? they have, what, three guards?

also: the chinese are dumb in this show. and i think the show's attempts to turn cheng into a supervillain aren't working, because tbh he doesn't seem that evil. and wtf, "we've used them before!" where?? on u.s. soil? or did you just fly them in from china in the last hour?? what is happening here?

félix pié, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 18:11 (eighteen years ago)

First ten minutes of last night's episode were awesome. Then it was back to the s.o.s.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 04:50 (eighteen years ago)

I laughed at Lenox's "Finally they are done"

Michael F Gill, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 05:11 (eighteen years ago)

...and "Well, he IS a sociopath."

James Mitchell, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 22:11 (eighteen years ago)

The best thing about this episode was that it wrapped up everyone's storyline neatly so that Season 7 can start with a COMPLETELY new cast (aside from Jack). Seasons 1-3 seemed like a trilogy, and so does 4-6.

Michael F Gill, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 02:03 (eighteen years ago)

Did anyone else want Jack to dive off the cliff and die, or was that just me?

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 04:08 (eighteen years ago)

There was almost half the show left to run and I thought "No, that can't be it - there must be at least some crumby twist - they can't just spin the next 20 mins out with useless emo shit." But they did!
