Then next year, just in time for the film's 25th anniversary, Ridley Scott's ultimate Blade Runner: The Final Cut will hit theaters for a limited run. This will be a REAL director's cut, with restored scenes and more - all the stuff that Ridley's always wanted to do with the film but hasn't really been given the chance to do before. That will be followed later in the year by an Ultimate Blade Runner DVD release. You can expect a multi-disc box set (again, likely with a simultaneous HD-DVD and Blu-ray Disc release) that will contain at least four different versions of the film... ALL in full anamorphic widescreen, we might add. You'll get the film's original U.S. theatrical cut, you'll get the expanded international theatrical cut, you'll get the 1992 Director's Cut and you'll get the new Final Cut as well...
I bought that Director's Cut remaster, it's just single disc. Looks fine but I really want to see this new cut as well.

I thought the original version with the Harrison Ford monologue was perfectly fine, except for the upbeat ending and the missing unicorn dream. The voiceover added to the film noir aspect of the movie, and some things in the director's cut are left kinda unclear without it.
― Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 11:47 (nineteen years ago)
Film apocrypha says that Ford hated doing the voice over, and so delivered it in a bored drawl, which added to the whole "maybe Decker is an android" thing, without going all "It was Donald" like they did in the Director's Cut.

Harrison Ford states he never thought he was an replicant
Well Deckard didn't think he was a replicant either. And what better way to get your leading man to play the part of a robot who thinks he's human, than to tell him he's playing a human?
Although there are some scenes where Deckard seems to be as emotionally childlike as the replicants are...

It's like when I saw the Star Wars special editions I was distracted thinking, 'oh, new shot, there's a new thing,' and was completely taken out of it. Here we wanted to integrate everything so seamlessly and elegantly that you'd never notice what was new. If you're a fan of the film you'll notice things we've changed, but if you've not seen the film, you won't notice the changes at all.
:D hope that's true!

BURBANK, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The one that started it all. Sir Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner, starring Harrison Ford, is one of the most important science-fiction movies of the 20th Century -- the film with immeasurable influence on society for its futuristic depiction of a post-apocalyptic, dystopian world, a film perhaps more powerful and relevant today than when it was made. The film, in fact, has appeared on more ‘Top Five’ sci-fi lists than any other film.
In celebration of its 25th anniversary, director Ridley Scott (Alien, Hannibal and a three-time Oscar® nominee, Best Director, for Gladiator, Thelma & Louise and Black Hawk Down) has gone back into post production to create the long-awaited definitive new version, which Warner Home Video will unveil on DVD December 18th in the U.S. Blade Runner: The Final Cut, spectacularly restored and remastered from original elements and scanned at 4K resolution, will contain never-before-seen added/extended scenes, added lines, new and improved special effects, director and filmmaker commentary, an all-new 5.1 Dolby® Digital audio track and more.
A showcase theatrical run is also being planned for New York and Los Angeles October 5.

Classic or Dud: people who write Blade Runner as 'Bladerunner'?
― DavidM, Saturday, 29 September 2007 08:47 (eighteen years ago)
Dear New Yorkers. This is opening friday night at the Ziegfield. The Ziegfield is the largest movie theater in NYC. I saw 2001 there. In 2001. It's big.
― dan selzer, Thursday, 4 October 2007 01:17 (eighteen years ago)
DavidM: big Dud.
The phrase is obviously a job title. No one writes "Officeassistant."
― Viceroy, Thursday, 4 October 2007 02:51 (eighteen years ago)
*oops, meant that writing "Bladerunner" was a dud, not that you, DavidM, were a dud.
― Viceroy, Thursday, 4 October 2007 03:04 (eighteen years ago)
Holy moly: you should all go see this on the big screen if you can! I went opening night in nyc and It was Very Intense. Midtown at midnight is just like Los Angeles Sector 2019 but not as clean. As seltzer said above, the theater is big -tremendous, even.
― saudade, Monday, 8 October 2007 22:29 (eighteen years ago)
seems like not much difference since the '92 "Director's Cut"...? I mean come on I don't care about stray effects wires and shit like that.
― Shakey Mo Collier, Monday, 8 October 2007 22:42 (eighteen years ago)
the 92 cut I think was based on the US theatrical version, which had less violence than the the euro one, so beyond stray wires, this one adds the violence and a few more atmosphere scenes, like street scenes and marketplace scenes. I wouldn't go see it to see unseen footage, it's more about just how well remastered it is and on a screen like the Ziegfeld, I saw so many details I'd never noticed in the several hundred times I'd scene it on a TV.
― dan selzer, Monday, 8 October 2007 23:09 (eighteen years ago)
I had never seen the film before, but really appreciate PKD and 'Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep.' The film is like an entirely separate thing from the book in my mind--although both engage the same question of how to know what is real versus what it artificial and whether that distinction even matters at all. The fact that the film itself has gone through so many versions and various alterations over such a long time period also engages this question on yet another level, yet again.
The big screen and the sound system at the Ziegfeld are really what made it even more worthwhile, so if you're anywhere that it's playing on the big screen then I wholeheartedly recommend going to see it.
― saudade, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 04:08 (eighteen years ago)
seeing this at the ziegfeld would be awesome. i'd do it.
― s1ocki, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 05:33 (eighteen years ago)
I saw it last night at the Landmark. Even if you've seen it a bunch of times (I've seen it at least a dozen or so times since opening night in 1982) you owe it to yourself to hear the cleaned up audio which is just phenomenal.
― Elvis Telecom, Friday, 12 October 2007 14:13 (eighteen years ago)
Off to see it Sunday afternoon, looking forward to it.
― Ned Raggett, Friday, 12 October 2007 14:18 (eighteen years ago)
dan, wasn't 2001's 2001 run at the now-defunct Loews Astor Plaza? (I saw it there, and at the Ziegfeld in '74.)
― Dr Morbius, Friday, 12 October 2007 14:30 (eighteen years ago)
So are there any actual changes to the plot besides extra violence and atmosphere scenes?
― Tuomas, Friday, 12 October 2007 14:31 (eighteen years ago)
there's a long lost re-inserted scene where Deckard eats a bag of microchips and cuts his mouth and he bleeds oil, very subtly indicating that he might be a replicant
― latebloomer, Friday, 12 October 2007 16:14 (eighteen years ago)
I definitely saw 2001 at the Ziegfeld. I think maybe it was playing in a few theaters then though.
― dan selzer, Friday, 12 October 2007 16:46 (eighteen years ago)
What was the extra violence? When he offs Pris?
― pisces, Friday, 12 October 2007 16:50 (eighteen years ago)
Tuomas, LB is lying. Deckard actually listens to some local death metal band and accidently smashes his head against the wall. He splits open his head and proclaims:"As long as the bebe doesn't seem my metal penis, all is fine!"
― stevienixed, Friday, 12 October 2007 16:53 (eighteen years ago)
For some odd reason, on my desk I have my ticket to see 2001 at the Astor Plaza, 7:00pm Wed 12/19/01 Adult $10.00 Auditorium 1.
[/ minutia]
― Edward III, Friday, 12 October 2007 17:07 (eighteen years ago)
You know, you're all right. I just got it in my head that the Ziegfeld was the only huge theater and therefore that's where I saw 2001, but I also remember walking in to see Blade Runner and thinking "this theater is a little smaller than I remember" and now that I've googled Astor Plaza and realize it was off of Time Square, I distinctly remember seeing 2001 at a theater off of Times Square. So there you are.

better pacing than the dircut
also seeing this on the big screen is really incredibly transporting. only problem I had was that this was the first time I watched it and actually thought "jesus why's it raining like fucking rashomon the whole time"

i'm going to see this on thursday, it's playing in the atlanta area, so psyched!

― and what, Sunday, 4 November 2007 21:42 (eighteen years ago)
I've seen both the original version and the director's cut on the big screen at the local film archive, I wonder if it's worth it seeing the movie yet again, if there isn't really anything new. Though it's rather unlikely anyone here will even release it in cinemas, so I guess I don't have to worry about it. Maybe the film archive will show it some day.
― Tuomas, Sunday, 4 November 2007 22:04 (eighteen years ago)
Why don't you go have some casual sex and never get a real job instead
― El Tomboto, Sunday, 4 November 2007 22:36 (eighteen years ago)
I kind of want to start a series of threads in the fanciful style of the lyrics to "big rock candy mountain" so Tuomas can show up and be like "we had a couple of these at my secondary school"
― El Tomboto, Sunday, 4 November 2007 22:38 (eighteen years ago)
Tombot, what exactly is your problem with me? You've been posting these snarky responses to me for a while now. Have I done something to offend you?
― Tuomas, Sunday, 4 November 2007 22:43 (eighteen years ago)
Btw, besides my studies I work 20 hours a week at a public housing company providing flats for people with low income, is that real enough for you?
― Tuomas, Sunday, 4 November 2007 22:52 (eighteen years ago)
Its playing here in Chicago right now, going to see it Tuesday. So excited.

man, i'd never seen this before and saw it on Saturday with The Tombot. I don't think I EVER want to see it on a small screen. such an awesome weird strange world--the plot was almost non essential but yeah so kick ass on the big screen.
― Mr. Que, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 19:17 (eighteen years ago)
I'm sure I read somewhere Ridley Scott saying that it was raining like rashomon all the time because they needed it to hide the cables and wiring being used for all the scenery and spaceships.

Even though the newest changes are so subtle, it's always worth it to see this 40-feet-wide. The scenes inside Deckard's dim apartment are so grainy! (I don't have a problem with that, btw.)

1. '82 release cut 2. first re-release sans narration etc 3. 'Final Cut'
what else is there?
― Dr Morbius, Wednesday, 12 December 2007 16:39 (eighteen years ago)
'WORKPRINT VERSION' This rare version of the film is considered by some to be the most radically different of all the Blade Runner cuts. It includes an altered opening scene, no Deckard narration until the final scenes, no "unicorn" sequence, no Deckard/Rachel "happy ending," altered lines between Batty (Rutger Hauer) and his creator Tyrell (Joe Turkell), alternate music and much more.
and 1982 'INTERNATIONAL VERSION' as opposed to domestic. Also used on U.S. home video, laserdisc and cable releases up to 1992. This version is not rated, and contains some extended action scenes in contrast to the Theatrical Version.

The commentary with screenwriters Hampton Fancher and David Peoples is one of the surprise highlights of this set. There's a bit of banter between them - freindly, but banter nontheless. Fancher is particularly dry and cutting. He's also good value in the Dangerous Days documentary movie.
The workprint is cack.

i really liked the final cut. aside from the more obvious tweaks i doubt i even noticed most of the changes. pity i didn't get to see this the theatrical release.
the documentary stuff is great, especially liked seeing the making of the f/x. it's really awe-inspiring how well they still hold up.
also enjoyed watching the deleted and alternate scenes strung together with the hilarious godawful alternate voiceover, it's like watching a weird, condensed bizarro-world version of the movie.
have not watched the workprint yet. always wanted to see it, out of curiosity.

I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Mods with ban sticks off the shoulder of ILE. I watched save-a-hoes glitter in the dark near the excelsior threads. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain. Time to die -- feminazi

RIP sole shimmering high point of 2007
― El Tomboto, Tuesday, 1 January 2008 21:28 (eighteen years ago)
the doc was really good - what it makes you realise is that these effects will ALWAYS hold up -- none of it's CGI, and all CGI still requires a bit of suspension of disbelief -- since this is all done with actual photography, actual light bouncing off of actual objects, it works
still confused by deckerd's roughness w/fembot sean young -- after seeing the doc, this thought: actual hostility?
― Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 1 January 2008 22:11 (eighteen years ago)
yeah duh
― El Tomboto, Tuesday, 1 January 2008 22:12 (eighteen years ago)
I always thought that was obvious. she's a replicant on the loose! he's built to kill her without a second thought!
― El Tomboto, Tuesday, 1 January 2008 22:13 (eighteen years ago)
that's really funny. the save-a-hoes glitter thing.
― s1ocki, Tuesday, 1 January 2008 22:13 (eighteen years ago)
well yeah but in that moment i was just thinking "harrison u mad"
in the doc they make it pretty clear that the two couldn't stand each others' guts
― Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 1 January 2008 22:22 (eighteen years ago)
haha actors hate sean young
― El Tomboto, Tuesday, 1 January 2008 22:24 (eighteen years ago)
yeah she craaaaaaazy.
― s1ocki, Tuesday, 1 January 2008 22:27 (eighteen years ago)
i watched blade runner w/o voice over when i was like 14 and it bored me to shit. saw it w/voice over when i was 20 and laughed my ass off. should prob watch Final Cut or whatever.
― BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Tuesday, 1 January 2008 22:39 (eighteen years ago)
Rather.
I had hoped to get the five-disc for Xmas but alas. I am torn between wanting to spring for it and settling for the rather cheaper four-disc set. But I want that Workprint, dammit.
― Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 1 January 2008 22:45 (eighteen years ago)
why?? i think it's supposed to suck!
― Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 1 January 2008 22:47 (eighteen years ago)
I got the two-disc. I already have the director's cut and have no need of the theatrical, or indeed any other versions, once I have the final cut.
― El Tomboto, Tuesday, 1 January 2008 22:48 (eighteen years ago)
yeah i bought it too. it's the only DVD i ever bought. i almost, in a fit of christmas consumerist frenzy, bought an HD-DVD player just so i could see it in HD but then realised i was being a douchebag.
― Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 1 January 2008 22:57 (eighteen years ago)
wow talk about raising the bar, is this 5 dvd box set the bizznizz or what? very candid in the documentary aren't they?
― pisces, Thursday, 17 January 2008 15:14 (eighteen years ago)
omgz there's a dead girl in the bath!
― DG, Thursday, 17 January 2008 15:15 (eighteen years ago)
and i wasn't quite prepared for the documentary to be like 3 and a half hours long
― DG, Thursday, 17 January 2008 15:16 (eighteen years ago)
The new cut is terrible. I wish I had never seen it.

haha me neither! it just kept going
― s1ocki, Thursday, 17 January 2008 16:43 (eighteen years ago)
good though. i don't feel so inclined to read the making of book now, i feel i already know too much :(
― DG, Thursday, 17 January 2008 16:45 (eighteen years ago)
theoreticalgirl can you explain why?? it had probably been 10 years since i'd seen any version, and the only things different i noticed was the unicorn stuff and the lack of idyllic happy ending -- i thought it was pretty great!
― Tracer Hand, Thursday, 17 January 2008 16:46 (eighteen years ago)
yeah it's a tarted up director's cut
― DG, Thursday, 17 January 2008 16:46 (eighteen years ago)
the obsession with that 2 second scene with strippers in hockey masks is odd though, it seems to be reapeated in every feature and on the box
― DG, Thursday, 17 January 2008 16:47 (eighteen years ago)
If I've never seen Blade Runner at all, which version should I watch first, given the plethora that are now available?
― krakow, Saturday, 19 April 2008 06:55 (eighteen years ago)
Final Cut is great. Ignore the haters, there's no reason to go back to the others. I mean, honestly, it's not hugely different from the Director's Cut except for some improvements that are actually good, and not film-mangling, George Lucas-style.
― Nhex, Saturday, 19 April 2008 07:05 (eighteen years ago)
I recently watched the Final Cut at home. Yeah, it wasn't the Ziegfield Theatre ...whateeeevs. It's GORGEOUS. The best version IMHO.
― Capitaine Jay Vee, Saturday, 19 April 2008 10:31 (eighteen years ago)
OK, looks like I'll hold out for the Final Cut (I have the Director's Cut here, but I'm not sure I'm in the mood for it tonight anyway...).
― krakow, Saturday, 19 April 2008 19:15 (eighteen years ago)
If you just want to watch it to see if you like the film, the differences between Director's Cut and Final Cut are very small. If you want to OWN IT FOREVER, go the final cut.
― James Morrison, Sunday, 20 April 2008 23:15 (eighteen years ago)

yeah retreating to a beautiful wilderness that shouldn't exist in a polluted dystopian nightmare makes so much more sense

― Tracer Hand, Monday, 21 April 2008 12:30 (eighteen years ago)
saw the Blu Ray edition of the Final Cut last night. was actually the first Blu Ray film I'd ever seen on a huge wall-sized flatscreen TV. and now I get the reason why the Final Cut exists -- it isn't even as much about the new footage, it's entirely about the digital cleanup & mastering.
Blu Ray is incredibly disorienting, it looks nothing like film. there's a 'film light' mode that's almost preferable, where suddenly the saturation returns and the color composition begins to resemble what you remember the 70mm print actually looks like projected in a theatre. the level of resolution on Blu Ray is so sharp it nearly feels like your eyes are being razored, you can nearly read the font on the Voight-Kampff machines & the police car's navigation system -- it's incredibly disorienting, there's almost too much information. Also, despite the cleanup, it's almost more clear than ever that you're looking at models, so it's more clinical less dreamy
it was still fantastic to see the new 70mm print in theatres again and I still think that's the best way to see this, but I didn't exactly get why this edition existed until last night -- this cut is all about HDTV
― Milton Parker, Tuesday, 13 May 2008 18:28 (eighteen years ago)
I too just watched my first blue Ray film, of course it was Blade Runner also.
Actually I was fairly impressed with the sharp quality, the actual differences in the storyline/scenes was fairly subtle and almost missed me. I only noticed the extended talk between Roy and Tyrell.
The backdrops were just eyeball poppingly gorgeous, so much detail to be seen, but I can see what Milton is saying though - the colouring is a bit too vibrant and takes the original atmostphere away somewhat.

I wonder if the TV Milton was watching was properly calibrated or if it was in "sports" mode or something - most sets have the contrast up way too high.

it still could be a small play, max.

^^^ if anyone cribs that i will fly a jet into your house

i'll get the kids
...somehow
when i have kids i'm going to start subtly suggesting from a v young age, like in the womb, that they put on bladerunner as a backyard/livingroom/park play with their friends every year
― rrrobyn, Friday, 6 June 2008 02:19 (seventeen years ago)
by the time they hit 10 yrs old they can take it on the road
oh man i would love to do blade runner
my friends and i still talk about putting on crimes and misdemeanours as a play
― s1ocki, Friday, 6 June 2008 05:58 (seventeen years ago)
was Exorcist ever done as a play? because it should have been.
― latebloomer, Friday, 6 June 2008 11:48 (seventeen years ago)
"too bad she wont live... but then again who does"
i think deckerd says something similar in the original v.o. version, at the very end, as they're speeding off into the mountains - i really missed that in the updated version, i thought it tied it up nicely, restated the theme, and connected deckerd with olmos in a nice way
― Tracer Hand, Friday, 6 June 2008 11:54 (seventeen years ago)
yeah, and made the movie pretty stupid
― max, Friday, 6 June 2008 15:49 (seventeen years ago)
the original line really should have been "too bad she wont live... but then again who does LOL"
