Continued from

New Los Angeles thread:

Los Angelenos, I may be in need of your help sometime. Would it it be imprudent to ask?

-- Rebel.yell.For.Internet.cakes (adamr...), January 17th, 2007 5:43 PM.

In lieu of any real questions for now, I'll ask you this -

Tell me about Terminal Island.

-- Rebel.yell.For.Internet.cakes (adamr...), January 17th, 2007 5:44 PM.

I'll let others talk about Terminal Island but you need help with anything, drop a line.

-- Ned Raggett (ne...), January 17th, 2007 5:46 PM.

OK! Though if I did, I'd only ask you about Terminal Island.

SO TALK ABOUT TERMINAL ISLAND, YOU.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 18 January 2007 02:56 (nineteen years ago)

No one here gets out alive.
It's every man and woman for himself on an island where convicted murderers are dumped, rather than kept in prison.

seriously -- go visit Stacy @ "Affordable Care for your Honda" on Santa Monica Blvd in Hollywood. Best, most trustworthy mechanics I've ever used. I make the trek from Altadena and it's worth it.

Meantime, one Henry Waxman finally volte-faces:

Two decades ago, Rep. Henry A. Waxman wrote into law a ban on the use of federal funds to build a subway tunnel in the Fairfax district of Los Angeles, worried that construction could trigger an underground gas explosion.

On Wednesday, the Los Angeles Democrat — now convinced that new technology could make drilling safe — persuaded the House to repeal his 1985 law, removing a major political obstacle to extending the line to the Westside.

The one-page bill passed on a voice vote.

The Senate is likely to follow suit soon, and President Bush is expected to sign the repeal into law.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 8 February 2007 17:43 (eighteen years ago)

i shld thank tremendoid again--i called up stacy and he let me know that a lot of 97 civics have an extended emission warranty that covers check engine light problems... sho nuff, mine is covered (for some reason the previous owners didnt tell me), which means that i get my shit fixed for free at the dealer (thru 150k mi/14 yrs!!) and honda will reimburse me for the 300 bucks i spent on all other emission stuff.

so: awesome! stacys got my business next time.

max (maxreax), Thursday, 8 February 2007 19:16 (eighteen years ago)

re waxman: there's no "finally" about it, he's been in support of a westside subway for years. now that so many people in his constituency are gaga for smart growth, that is...

tuesdays with morey amsterdam (get bent), Friday, 9 February 2007 02:30 (eighteen years ago)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 9 February 2007 02:33 (eighteen years ago)

Anyway, we're all still on for the 17th? BLAM sez his schedule should be good for it but will reconfirm.

i dont know what area to move to.

homosexual II, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 23:51 (eighteen years ago)

i'd recommend eagle rock (cause i love it), but i dont know that i'd want to be driving to santa monica every day (altho i have a professor who does and he doesn't seem to mind).

max, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 23:59 (eighteen years ago)

I just want to put myself on the L.A. thread real quick since I am sort of homesick and very far away.

i'd recommend eagle rock (cause i love it), but i dont know that i'd want to be driving to santa monica every day (altho i have a professor who does and he doesn't seem to mind).

Commuting from Eagle Rock to Santa Monica every day during normal working hours is COMPLETELY FUCKING INSANE. Don't do this AT ALL unless you want to live in your car for a minimum of 90 minutes each way.

Of all the west side areas, I would recommend Culver City. Yeah, it's gentrification central, but there are still relatively affordable places to be found - you'll just need to dig a little bit. Avoid Palms and Venice.

Elvis Telecom, Thursday, 1 March 2007 00:31 (eighteen years ago)

alot of people that work on the westside that cant afford the outrageous prices live near me in the sfv seeing that SM is just over the sepulveda pass.

chaki, Thursday, 1 March 2007 00:34 (eighteen years ago)

Culver City seconded, I kibbitz (but why the objection to Palms, I wonder?)

gabbneb, Thursday, 1 March 2007 00:56 (eighteen years ago)

does anyone have recs on where to look for apartments besides craigslist? as someone who currently pays $400/month for a gigantic apartment i am a bit shellshocked by my initial glances on CL.

homosexual II, Thursday, 1 March 2007 01:45 (eighteen years ago)

you could get a westside rentals account (i think it's $60 for 3 months). i'm getting one because i need to find a new place by may.

get bent, Thursday, 1 March 2007 03:28 (eighteen years ago)

sorry, $60 for 60 days.

get bent, Thursday, 1 March 2007 03:30 (eighteen years ago)

i've been curious about the rent prices in larchmont -- are they as insane as i assume they are?

get bent, Thursday, 1 March 2007 03:36 (eighteen years ago)

larchmont "adj" is still doable - meaning koreatown, mid city, some south of wilshire hoods. larchmont proper is definitely insane

gershy, Thursday, 1 March 2007 03:45 (eighteen years ago)

yeah, my house is in Palms and I love it. My neighborhood is aces – I live across from an Egyptian brothel, next to a professional dog-walker, and at the junction of two blind alleys; a.k.a skater-kid central. My across-the street neighbors have two teenaged kids who play cricket on the yellow line, I'm walking distance from Trader Joe's, Vons, and a quarter mile from Surfas. India Sweets & Spices is a bike-hop away, and I'm 10 minutes from the water, 15 minutes from Hollywood, 20 minutes from the valley, and 25 minutes from downtown. Larchmont is cool if you can find anything on the South side of Beverly, preferably on the West side of the village. The area more Koreatown-adjacent is dicey as hell; I lived there for a year and left after a murder in front of my apartment complex. Prices weren't bad; but walking to the bus-stop was.

remy bean, Thursday, 1 March 2007 04:31 (eighteen years ago)

For better or worse, Craig's is the best. The Recycler (link) is a decent secondary.

Elvis Telecom, Thursday, 1 March 2007 06:40 (eighteen years ago)

http://www.housingmaps.com/ and http://www.myapartmentmap.com are also useful.

Elvis Telecom, Thursday, 1 March 2007 06:41 (eighteen years ago)

I always got my apartments in L.A. - and I had some GREAT places in Los Feliz, Hollywood, and the sort of mystery area right by the New Beverly Cinema - by just driving around and looking for signs. It's the only city I've lived in where this worked consistently. Give yourself a few hours to just wander around the neighborhood you're looking at with your cell and call the landlords. Be OVERLY friendly!

Ben Boyerrr, Thursday, 1 March 2007 10:33 (eighteen years ago)

this is where having a car would help. but an mta day pass works too! sorta.

get bent, Thursday, 1 March 2007 12:36 (eighteen years ago)

the housing map thing is great! would it be ridic to consider possibly commuting from either downtown, silverlake or hollywood to santa monica every day? it seems like the apartments are cheaper there from first glance, and also have things i like (old-timey stuff, hardwood floors, etc)

homosexual II, Thursday, 1 March 2007 13:50 (eighteen years ago)

downtown and silver lake (two words!) wouldn't be bad commutes. make sure you do your research though... there are good and not-so-good parts of downtown and SL.

that said, the neighborhoods i'm looking into for my own move are downtown (very close to my school), highland park (near the gold line and/or 81 bus), culver/palms, hollywood, maybe little ethiopia, possibly pasadena because they have an inclusionary housing law which means 20 percent of all new construction has to be "affordable" units. i love eagle rock and it's on the 81 but it would be too far to commute by bus every day.

get bent, Thursday, 1 March 2007 18:11 (eighteen years ago)

and those '20s style buildings with hardwood and brick are great, i agree. also: BUNGALOWS.

i do have an affection for '50s stucco dingbats with tiki/atomic signage. there's an interesting book about these by the current urban designer of west hollywood.

get bent, Thursday, 1 March 2007 18:14 (eighteen years ago)

i was living in highland park this summer and i loved it. great food, easy to get around, mr. t's bowl, etc. and the soda pop stop!

max, Thursday, 1 March 2007 18:31 (eighteen years ago)

doh. im so sorry i quizzed you all on this. finally got word on this job i might get, and it pays too little to make it worth my while. i'll stick to kickin' it in the 5280.

homosexual II, Thursday, 1 March 2007 19:59 (eighteen years ago)

1) why do I always miss the LA FAPS? That dal rae place looks amazing and I've never been. The buggy whip is old timey cool also. Pacific Dining Car iin SM s More pricey but old staid and dark and if you get to know the bartender, he keeps yr glass full - I went to the one downtown and it was not as good.

Some good environmental news for LAxors - the port of Long Beach just converted one of its high-pollutin' diesel yard trucks over to LNG as a test and they are more than happy with the results. It's estimated the various ports contribute more than 70% of the particulate pollution to the LA basin due mostly to these diesel engines, and now it looks like the majority will be converted to LNG (which is incredibly clean burning and doesn't pollute soil or water if spilled) by the end of 2008.

I'll hoist a cup of coffee in memory of the Motor-On-Inn: a coffee bar on Motor Ave. (just N of Venice Bl) back in the pre-cambrian days of LA hipster culture in 1989-1992. Great coffee, decor straight out of early Roadside America, and always had the most recent copy of Factsheet Five there.

More housing questions. There's a possibility that I might do an internship at UCLA this summer. Does anyone have a room to rent to me for 6 weeks, or know of someplace? It seems like it's gonna be hard to get a sublet or anything through Craigslist for only 6 weeks. As far as I can tell UCLA summer housing is only for people who are enrolled in classes.

Thanks! (mary)

The brush fire is of course impossible to miss down here -- we had a good view of it when my plane came in this afternoon -- but on the flip side, the winds driving said wildfire meant that we almost landed, literally were right above the runway, and then scrubbed and ascended again because it was too dangerous. That was a few minutes I'd rather not go through again. Second time through was a charm and spontaneous applause the result.

Anyway, am home, doing laundry and feeling full of a Wahoo's meal. All is again as it should be.

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 11 March 2007 22:28 (eighteen years ago)

And speaking of food, a slightly rare event, namely a good LA food article not written by Jonathan Gold -- it's not perfect, Steve Lopez's style not completely being my thing, so the first part of it might as well be any random stand-up comedian ripping off Seinfeld, say. But it has the actual Pink family from Pink's in it and this great line from a chef:

"Any chef who doesn't tell you he hits Pink's or Carl's Jr. after work is lying."

Wasn't there something on this thread that mentioned apartment-seeking alternatives to craigslist and said there were "good" and "bad" areas of Silverlake/Los Feliz? I swear I remember reading that.

Anyway, if anyone would like to elaborate on those subjects I'd be extremely grateful. Or suggest good places to live that are reasonable and not sketchy. I'm not tied to location, some parts of the West Side might not be so convenient but I'm not sure. I sort of feel like I have spent enough time in LA to have a vague idea of how it all fits together, but I'm probably wrong. What about Eagle Rock or Highland Park? How are those regarded?

admrl, Monday, 26 March 2007 20:52 (eighteen years ago)

highland park -- sketchy in some parts, but especially if you're black (somewhat of a ethnic cleansing campaign going on, which is fucked up -- I used to ((stupidly))hang out with some latino gangsters there less than 10 years ago) . Eagle Rock - I haven't really done more than pass through there since I was young, there was some cool neighborhoods back then but I don't know what they're like now.

tremendoid, Monday, 26 March 2007 21:23 (eighteen years ago)

thank you, tremendoid!

admrl, Monday, 26 March 2007 21:31 (eighteen years ago)

Eagle Rock is pretty good, it's starting to sell itself as a new hip nabe though there's still not much there. Highland Park seems better than it used to but still may be the kind of place you don't want to be walking around in at night.

Are you at Art Center now, Adam?

nickn, Monday, 26 March 2007 21:59 (eighteen years ago)

And the HP sub-hood of Mount Washington is pretty good. Hillier and more houses than apartments.

nickn, Monday, 26 March 2007 22:02 (eighteen years ago)

hey--i live in eagle rock--ill post a little bit more when i have a sec--but the short answer is that its great

max, Monday, 26 March 2007 22:09 (eighteen years ago)

I am not at Art Center. I am going to school though. Let's just say I am expecting an arduous daily reverse-commute. ;)

admrl, Monday, 26 March 2007 22:21 (eighteen years ago)

I live in Eagle Rock, but I go to school (0ccidental College) here so take my advice w/ a grain of salt, since it's probably not the same experience. But yeah, I like it a lot.

The neighborhood itself is weird--it's mostly made up of working-class Filipino & Mexican families, older boho beat/hippie artist-types, college kids (centered around campus) and a smattering of hipsters. The shops/restaurants reflect this, too; you have "trendy" coffee places like Swork and the bistro version of Coffee Table here (both of which are great) and then some more grungy Thai/Mexican places. There are a lot of auto shops and also a lot of baby clothing stores. It's not a great place for shopping, or for walking around, but I think as a neighborhood it's got the best collection of restaurants in L.A.: Senor Fish, Coffee Table, the Oinkster (great new pastrami place), Spitz (pretty good Doner Kebab place run by 0xy grads), Panang (Thai), Blue Hen (Vietnamese), Mia Sushi (I don't like sushi so I've never been here), the very overrated but nonetheless good Casa Bianca, three excellent taco trucks (I recommend Leo's, and Sonia's, run by Leo's ex-wife), one shitty taco truck, and the best sandwich shop in L.A. (and I say this as a New Jersey native who KNOWS sandwiches), Dave's Chillin-n-Grillin. There's also a small farmer's market on Friday nights featuring an Elvis impersonator and a super-cut Belgian crepe chef and his hot Russian girlfriend. Also recommended: Don's Music, which is k-classic because Don is a great guy. There's no good bookstore in town, but the 0ccidental store is actually quite well-stocked. There are two head shops, for some reason, and a Target, Super A, CVS and Trader Joe's.

It's fairly safe; I know people who've been jumped before but if you're smart about where you're walking and how late you're out, you're likely to be O.K. The neighborhood layout is pretty interesting , and the houses are really great--none of them look the same and a lot of them appear to have been built out of whatever was at hand. I spent a few hours with friends tripping and driving around just looking and had a blast. The location is great for me; I rarely go as far west as Westwood or Santa Monica, and I spend time in Glendale and Pasadena, which are very close by. Hollywood, Los Feliz, Silver Lake, Echo Park and Downtown are ~20 minutes away depending on the time of day.

It's fairly cheap to live here, but is getting more expensive. I pay around $600/mo., plus gas & electric, for half a small 2bdr behind another house; I'd say that's on the expensive side for the square footage, but I haven't been in the market for more than a year, so I don't know.

Anyway if you have any more specific questions I can try to answer them. I'm sure that living here as a college student is different from living here and commuting, but I still think it's great.

max, Monday, 26 March 2007 23:08 (eighteen years ago)

this place is the real deal, worth every bit of the talking-up. and reasonably priced too, although the wine really drives up the bill.

Brush fire erupts in the Hollywood Hills
By Tony Barboza and Rong-Gong Lin II, Times Staff Writers
2:21 PM PDT, March 30, 2007

A brush fire erupted in the hills above the Oakwood Apartment complex in the Hollywood Hills this afternoon, pouring smoke into the air.

The blaze was reported about 12:50 p.m. around the 3600 block of Barham Boulevard, near Universal City, said Ron Myers of the Los Angeles Fire Department.

About five acres were burned, he said.

As of 2:15 p.m., the fire was burning up away from the Oakwood and Warner Bros. studio and into remote brush roughly near Mt. Lee. But the flames where whipping again near large power lines.

No structures have been damaged and no injuries were reported, he said.

A large plume of smoke could be seen from the San Fernando Valley to Hollywood.

There was no immediate impact on traffic but there could be problems as the evening commute begins.

"Any time there is heavy smoke like this, we really ask that any drivers be extremely cautious," Myers said.

There was no immediate cause of the fire, but the dry conditions and lack of rain were factors in the spread.

About 200 firefighters were on the scene and at least five helicopters dropped chemicals on the blaze.

No evacuations have been ordered.

Ned, I now know another person from Costa Mesa. I was talking with them about tacos and the televangelist temple.

Ned, I now know another person from Costa Mesa. I was talking with them about tacos and the televangelist temple.

:-) So they've moved away or were they just up there on a trip?

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 10 May 2007 16:13 (eighteen years ago)

Back to Griffith -- aw:

There may be some who love Griffith Park as much as Los Angeles City Councilman Tom LaBonge, but no one enjoys showing it off more than he does.

The tour he gave me Wednesday morning was not the usual cheery adventure, though. His beloved park was scorched, with columns of smoke rising all around us and trails littered with charred rabbits frozen in running poses.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 10 May 2007 16:16 (eighteen years ago)

So they've moved away or were they just up there on a trip?

Adam, Mount Washington is a neighborhood between downtown and Pasadena, off the Arroyo Seco/110 Freeway. It's a hilly area--obviously--above Highland Park (where I live) on one side and Eagle Rock/Glassell Park on the other side. It's very pretty up there at the top. The mayor used to live in Mt. Washington before he moved into the mayor's mansion. Everyone always raves about the Mt. Washington elementary school and tells me to get a job there.

Arthur, Thursday, 10 May 2007 21:28 (eighteen years ago)

Hi Arthur!

Tell me about Highland Park! Does it have bungalows?

admrl, Thursday, 10 May 2007 21:43 (eighteen years ago)

Every area in "northeast LA" has bungalows. HP is a bit more low-rent than other parts, but probably OK to live in.

Culver City report: no fires here!

Do you like living in Culver City?

admrl, Friday, 11 May 2007 02:43 (eighteen years ago)

I do! I actually live just north of it (around Sepulveda and Venice [please don't stalk me]), but it's a lot easier to say Culver City when telling people where I live. It's a nice area. Pretty quiet, everything I could want (within short driving distance there are a few malls, several good movie theaters, two Best Buy's, a used CD store, and a really good deli). Plus, no fires!

Jeff Treppel, Friday, 11 May 2007 03:05 (eighteen years ago)

MsLaura, Friday, 11 May 2007 06:06 (eighteen years ago)

Sounds about right:

Josh Olsen, 23, a fourth-generation Avalon resident with bleached, spiked hair, had his work cut out for him this morning lugging back home "the important stuff I saved last night: two skateboards and three guitars including a vintage '70s Rickenbacker, once owned by Warren Zevon," a rock and roll musician and songwriter who was known for his dark and sometimes humorous songs.

Still missing was his albino corn snake "which I think is loose in the house somewhere." Looking back, he shook his head and said, "It was kind of a trip, man. Awesome."

Ned Raggett, Friday, 11 May 2007 16:51 (eighteen years ago)

remy bean, Friday, 11 May 2007 17:41 (eighteen years ago)

OK, duly noted. There seem to be a lot of desirable neighborhoods in Los Angeles. I am in the middle of (maybe) securing a sublet-to-permanent-let but I have one eye open in case it doesn't work out or we decide not to sign a long term lease. I wish I could move down there now rather than waiting.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 11 May 2007 17:58 (eighteen years ago)

What's the Sepulveda/405 conundrum?

Jeff Treppel, Friday, 11 May 2007 19:07 (eighteen years ago)

405/10 interchange is the most heavily trafficked piece of concrete in the world.

at rush hour, it's almost like performance art.

Steve Shasta, Friday, 11 May 2007 19:11 (eighteen years ago)

I thought the 405/101 interchange was supposed to be the worst. But yeah, I stay the fuck away from that interchange during rush hour, and generally try to stay away from the 405 entirely unless it's on a weekend outside the peak hours. I live on Sepulveda around Venice (as I mentioned above), so the absolute worst is when I go west of the 405 and then have to try to get back across on surface streets after 4 p.m. It's intensely frustrating, because there are only like four ways through, and they're all backed up with traffic for blocks and blocks. It's like, "I live three blocks away! This shouldn't be taking me half an hour!" But it does.

Cafe Tropical at 2900 W Sunset is pretty good. Great prices it's more Cuban than Mexican, but that should be good enough.

Spencer Chow, Thursday, 24 May 2007 21:32 (eighteen years ago)

Alegria is good too. Casita Del Campo is old school.

Spencer Chow, Thursday, 24 May 2007 21:36 (eighteen years ago)

Alegria is OK, but the best place on that stretch of Sunset is El Cochinito at the corner of Sunset and Golden Gate.

Elvis Telecom, Thursday, 24 May 2007 21:51 (eighteen years ago)

Cafe Tropical is OK for a cup of strong coffee in the morning, but it used to double as a meeting place for the local AA, NA, etc. groups which made it difficult to find a table in the evening.

For Cuban food it's obsoleted by El Cochinito so just go there.

Elvis Telecom, Thursday, 24 May 2007 21:55 (eighteen years ago)

Noted!

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 24 May 2007 22:02 (eighteen years ago)

Traffic Friday afternoon from Pasadena -> Echo Park isn't bad, but still too much for a workday.

I did notice raves for El Cochinito when googling for Cafe Tropical details, so you should probably just go there.

nickn, Thursday, 24 May 2007 22:08 (eighteen years ago)

I'll just see if my contingent is up for it, I can't imagine they wouldn't.

To be sure! But we've got a weekend.

Mae Ploy is definitely on the 'to check out' list, as recommended by the bods behind the fest.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 25 May 2007 04:18 (eighteen years ago)

has anyone ever done the walk from sunset/elysian park ave to dodger stadium? i wanna check out a game or two this summer -- i still have yet to see the team that l.a. stole from my ancestral homeland.

i've heard the stadium's not that accessible if you don't have a car. apparently there was a short-lived shuttle that went there but the ridership was low and they canned it before people even had a chance to find out that it existed. that's l.a. for you.

get bent, Friday, 1 June 2007 06:27 (eighteen years ago)

i always liked how nyc really milked the "subway series" idea, and made riding the train to the game part of the whole experience. l.a could take a lesson from new york and think about how to step up the advertising/PR for its transit system, to give it some sort of personality. there's a golden opportunity that's being lost.

At the Art Center's South campus in Pasadena there's a free architecture-related video program on Monday (11th, see link below). A show on the Case Study House program is on the 18th.

June 11 7:00 - 9:30 pm
Desert Utopia
Highlighting Palm Springs, the city with the highest concentration of mid-century modern architecture in the country, this film weaves architectural images, vintage photography, classic film clips and interviews, including rare archival footage of Albert Frey, John Porter Clark, Raymond Lowey and Richard Neutra.

The Spirit in Architecture: John Lautner
One of the great mid-century modernist architects, John Lautner practiced for more than 55 years, designing unusual and unique residences in and around Los Angeles, including Silvertop and the Chemosphere, as well as innovative restaurant designs, such as Googies and Tiny Naylor’s

OK, link doesn't work. Here's the info on the 18th.

Case Study House Program 1945-1966: An Anecdotal History & Commentary
This Program, initiated by John Entenza of Arts & Architecture magazine in 1945, attempted to shape the course of the post-WWII building boom away from traditional housing and toward progressive modern design by using new technologies to produce well-designed affordable housing. The magazine commissioned 36 designs for experimental modern housing prototypes by some of the most important architects of the region at that time. Of these, 25 were built. This film includes ten of the houses, along with commentary by the architects and original clients.

Special guest: Eames Demetrios – filmmaker, writer, grandson of Charles and Ray Eames, and principal of the Eames design office in Los Angeles.

Do any of you LAXors want tickets to tonight's Dodger game? I have two from work, they're excellent seats (behind home plate, a few rows back) but no one here wants to go, I'm going home to sleep, and I'd hate to waste them if I don't have to.

The Rocky Delgadillo show has been entertaining this week.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 19:48 (eighteen years ago)

what's good'ol Rocky up to now?

carne asada, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 19:57 (eighteen years ago)

rocky let his wife drive his city car. she has longstanding misdemeanor driving issues. i am not sure why it's on the front page of the la times. i guess it beats writing about their embarrassing mayor.

dan, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 21:21 (eighteen years ago)

Well, also the fact she apparently had no license. That said I agree it's all early-summer 'we have nothing better to talk about that involves actual thinking' coverage.

I live in Los Angeles.

humansuit, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 21:27 (eighteen years ago)

Could you provide more details? As in, working in the library system or...?

Ned Raggett, Friday, 22 June 2007 23:47 (eighteen years ago)

(Which I assume is the case if this is Mary. HI DERE.)

Ned Raggett, Friday, 22 June 2007 23:47 (eighteen years ago)

The LA library system is rubbish. Why, my local library only had one Conan the barbarian novel!

Jeff Treppel, Friday, 22 June 2007 23:56 (eighteen years ago)

Hi! Yes, good guess. I'm at ALA/DC and I scheduled an interview with that lib. system, but now I'm wondering if I shouldn't cancel it. I also have an interview with L.A. proper. I don't mind interviewing just for experience etc. but I wonder if I shouldn't try and check out some presentations or some such.

Virginia Plain, Saturday, 23 June 2007 00:45 (eighteen years ago)

Ned Raggett, Monday, 25 June 2007 18:33 (eighteen years ago)

i say the 11th, because it's closer. i might bring a friend, but i got 2+ seats in my car -- i'd be leaving pretty early a.m., and i refuse to ride the finding nemo submarine. eg:

instead of looking at animatronic sea life through the port holes, visitors to Disneyland will view images through an effects box attached to each port hole. Because there will be a space in between the effects box and the port hole, it will appear as though the characters from Finding Nemo are actually swimming in the water right outside your submarine!

remy bean, Monday, 25 June 2007 19:22 (eighteen years ago)

Also sprawl, villages, long commutes, not defined by one single area/neighbourhood, ethnically (and linguistically) diverse, defiantly low-rise compared to a lot of other world cities. Obviously the comparison falls down in a lot of places and these things are true of many other cities. But Los Angeles reminds me more of London than New York does.

"On thinking about Hell, I gather

Much like the city of London. I
Who live in Los Angeles and not in London
Find, on thinking about Hell, that it must be
Still more like Los Angeles."

admrl, Friday, 29 June 2007 20:12 (eighteen years ago)

Alright, so I got a job in Brentwood. I live in South Pasadena, with no plans to move.

Short of convincing the law firm, which has been here for 15 years, from moving, are there any suggestions on improving my commute?

I've taken the 110 to the 10 route, the 110 to Venice Blvd. Route, and the Olympic Blvd. to the 110 route. Any other options I'm overlooking?

The commute has been, almost without fail, an hour each way. I can totally handle that, but am curious if anyone has any alternatives that might be enjoyable.

B.L.A.M., Friday, 6 July 2007 23:35 (eighteen years ago)

OK, we found an apartment. We have been here since Wednesday, driving all over from early morning until late at night, I feel totally fried. I was going to maybe come out tonight but I am knackered. It's...rather unusual!

admrl, Saturday, 7 July 2007 19:23 (eighteen years ago)

you should farm out your driveway for news trucks.

remy bean, Saturday, 7 July 2007 19:29 (eighteen years ago)

BLAM: Ventura Freeway west, exit Van Nuys, take Beverly Glen over the hill to Sunset, west on Sunset.

Elvis Telecom, Saturday, 7 July 2007 19:30 (eighteen years ago)

Adam, AWESOME.

Jeremy, obviously I was talking about his morning commute.

Spencer Chow, Saturday, 7 July 2007 19:48 (eighteen years ago)

Also, last year I was having lunch at Howard Hughes Center, and noticed the mayor about to give a speech. He was talking with a reporter and for some reason I thought to myself, "they are totally sleeping together". More grist my theory that I AM ALWAYS RIGHT.

Spencer Chow, Saturday, 7 July 2007 19:51 (eighteen years ago)

Being five minutes from downtown doesn't really mean much, there's nothing there worth driving the five minutes to get to.

Jeff Treppel, Saturday, 7 July 2007 19:59 (eighteen years ago)

(Actually, I'm slightly wrong. There's a really delicious Italian restaurant called Ciao Trattoria near seventh and Figueroa. You should try it. Otherwise, nothing.)

Jeff Treppel, Saturday, 7 July 2007 20:03 (eighteen years ago)

Er, there's tons of stuff going on downtown (museums, galleries, clubs, dining etc etc), I find myself there more and more.

Spencer Chow, Saturday, 7 July 2007 22:52 (eighteen years ago)

Although as a kid I would only go there once a year (to the Bonaventure for brunch on Christmas Eve).

Spencer Chow, Saturday, 7 July 2007 22:53 (eighteen years ago)

obviously, spencer.

remy bean, Saturday, 7 July 2007 23:01 (eighteen years ago)

The museums aren't bad, but the parking is. That's mostly what keeps me away from there. There just isn't much there that I can't get elsewhere in the city far more easily.

Jeff Treppel, Saturday, 7 July 2007 23:17 (eighteen years ago)

Tranny hookers?

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 7 July 2007 23:38 (eighteen years ago)

Parking is super easy evenings and weekends.

Spencer Chow, Sunday, 8 July 2007 00:16 (eighteen years ago)

REDCAT is downtown, very useful for me! =)

admrl, Sunday, 8 July 2007 00:25 (eighteen years ago)

So we gonna do a WELCOME ADRML party?

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 8 July 2007 00:26 (eighteen years ago)

Jody suggested Canter's sometime, which I would love to do. Oh and I finally ate at a Versailles yesterday in Culver City. So good.

admrl, Sunday, 8 July 2007 00:32 (eighteen years ago)

Wise man. So it's August, yes?

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 8 July 2007 00:35 (eighteen years ago)

Yes. In fact I've got nothing much to do for the month of August, really!

Also it seems I'm only a 5 minute walk from a Gold Line stop, so I don't even have to worry about the aforementioned parking problem when I go downtown to see the nothing that is there.

admrl, Sunday, 8 July 2007 00:39 (eighteen years ago)

Oh fortunate soul.

First two weekends of August are open for me -- something will suggest itself.

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 8 July 2007 00:42 (eighteen years ago)

i want to know whether spencer chow has been to the edison.

get bent, Sunday, 8 July 2007 00:53 (eighteen years ago)

i walked right by versailles last night. i was soused at backstage, and think i sang karaeoke to 'goodnight irene' after developing one of those instant sitzed friendships with a guy & his girlfriend who both had hair down to their waists.

Haven't been there yet - a close friend was surprised. I go to La Cita for Dance Right and the MOCA on some Saturday nights. Had a couple fun nights at the Redwood.

Spencer Chow, Sunday, 8 July 2007 01:12 (eighteen years ago)

i just was taking some friends around h'wood and beverly hills and i realized i spend basically no time anywhere west of, say, los feliz... its like i dont even live in this city!

max, Sunday, 8 July 2007 04:06 (eighteen years ago)

Adam, I think you live just up the hill from me! In a much, much nicer neighborhood, you posh Brit. Maybe we'll bump into each other at the Superior Market on Figueroa and 45th. Have you been to Phillipe's? We should all go there, it's just off the Gold Line, although parking's never really a problem.

Arthur, Sunday, 8 July 2007 04:34 (eighteen years ago)

max, i always feel like i'm in a foreign country whenever i'm west of, like, overland

get bent, Sunday, 8 July 2007 05:46 (eighteen years ago)

overland is pretty west, i start thinking "westside" sort of round robertson ( i hate eastside snobbery mainly cuz i like the fairfax/miracle mile area and silverlake dorks turn up their nose at that)

gershy, Sunday, 8 July 2007 06:04 (eighteen years ago)

i like fairfax/mm and i'm a silverlake dork!

Xpost:

The problem is, very little is open on nights worth going to. Maybe a little more on weekends, but it's still limited. Sorry, I don't mean to seem so cranky on this thread. It's just that I was at USC for four years, and downtown was the closest area to me, and it was an endless source of frustration how little there was to do there. I'm a West side guy, myself. Quiet, plenty of stores and dining, and stuff to do. I'm not really a clubber/hipster, so it's perfect for my needs, except when I need to drive up to Hollywood for a concert.

I don't know, Ned, I've never had any problem picking up tranny hookers on the west side. Maybe you just weren't looking in the right places?

Jeff Treppel, Sunday, 8 July 2007 06:25 (eighteen years ago)

Maybe we'll bump into each other at the Superior Market on Figueroa and 45th.

haha, I was there just yesterday! Yes, I am up in the hills off of Marmion. It is rather posh, I suppose. And my classmate Jessie lives just a little down the hill. Glad to know we have a little community going. I don't know Philippe's, though.

Also I love the westside. We were staying there and we looked at a few apartments close by. I intend to divide my time equally between both "sides" if I can, though we did tend to gravitate towards Silverlake and Los Feliz on this visit. Either way, Los Angeles makes me very excited indeed.

admrl, Monday, 9 July 2007 01:06 (eighteen years ago)

yes. it goes,"in n out. in n out. thats what a hamburer's.... all about."

Just, well, where to begin with the Pinkberry experience.

wtf, ned? the pinkbery experience for me has consisted of walking in, ordering a frozen yogurt with 2 toppings of my choice, walking out, and eating it.

Chaki -- for me the Pinkberry experience is partially defined by the high schooler out on a date, all mohawked and Assuck-sloganeered-jacketed out, dropped off at a Pinkberry by his mom in a fancy huge SUV. Donut Mackro and I thought we were seeing something being filmed for reality TV.

By the way, I really enjoyed my brief sojourn in Valencia (above). There's NO way I'm living there, though! What a strange place.

Valencia is sort of like The OC North, but, you know, without a beach. What always amazes me about the place is the weird sort of snobbery you get there. Even though a significant amount of the wealth comes from the entertainment business it is almost far enough away from Hollywood that people feel safe to play the sort of snobby games and one-up contests without comparing themselves with LA's richest. You end with people who aren't really that much richer than people who live in, say, Burbank, but with twice as much attitude because they've got the newest car on the block. People in the Valley and in other parts of LA are more aware of the competition and so they never get too high on their horse. It is a sort of strange town.

Cunga, Monday, 9 July 2007 07:29 (eighteen years ago)

I've been away from this thread too long!

Flavin: it's worth going, but it's underwhelming. Granted I saw it in rapid succession with the Serra show at MOMA, but I did see the Flavin first.

Pinkberry: I'm with Chaki - a nice, cold treat (I'll take mine with strawberry, blueberry, and mango) and No Big Deal. I can't believe how quickly they're multiplying though - suddenly you practically can't throw a rock without hitting one...

Remy: if you're going to go to the Backstage for god's sake call me. I am a karaoke whore.

rogermexico., Monday, 9 July 2007 17:08 (eighteen years ago)

I am a karaoke whore.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 9 July 2007 17:10 (eighteen years ago)

Ned, you are too kind! Though I did get a knuckle-bump from an enormous latin gangster the last time I was out (first time I took a crack at "Rocket Man"...)

Mr. Bent, I am hanging in there. Looking for a new job, with a possibility it may take me to SF or NY, but I'm hoping to stay here. Otherwise, just trying to get sun, exercise, and time with my guitar at regular intervals. My job is kinda killing me, which is not how it's supposed to be.

rogermexico., Monday, 9 July 2007 18:57 (eighteen years ago)

Bring it.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 9 July 2007 18:59 (eighteen years ago)

LOL

I did look at some yoga studios in Atwater Village and Silverlake. The fact of being a student means that yoga will be simultaneously deeply necessary and possibly financially beyond my grasp. But if I have to just roll out my mat in Sycamore Grove park or a Santa Clarita hillside, so be it.

I am in SF and everything feels in slow-motion here.

Also I "do" karaoke, yes.

Tell me about the Pasadena flea market. Would it be a suitable place to find interesting and affordable home furnishings and decorations?

I think that even by my standards, this might be the metrosexual-est post I've ever made.

admrl, Monday, 9 July 2007 19:09 (eighteen years ago)

Also - where do you all get your face creams and lotions?

(j/k)

admrl, Monday, 9 July 2007 19:11 (eighteen years ago)

One other serious question though - how awful would a commute from Mount Washington to say, Santa Monica be? The 110 to the 10? Looks like it would be hellish but this is only hypothetical right now.

admrl, Monday, 9 July 2007 19:13 (eighteen years ago)

It wouldn't be anyone's notion of "fun," but it's surviveable. I know folks who have managed Pasadena/Santa Monica and North Hollywood/Santa Monica and remained at least relatively sane.

rogermexico., Monday, 9 July 2007 19:24 (eighteen years ago)

Okay, thanks. My wife is still jobhunting and a lot of things are coming up over there. Just trying to factor in commute times. Hopefully she gets something a little closer!

Craigslist all the way! But the Pasadena City College flea market is good too, and the Rose Bowl one had expensive stuff and junk the last time I was there (admittedly more than 10 years ago).

nickn, Tuesday, 10 July 2007 02:07 (eighteen years ago)

i worked Sundays at the PCC flea market for years, there's all kinds of good stuff to be had, especially if you're looking for smaller pieces. We scored a great big old chinese armoire last year but those kinds of finds aren't always as forthcoming. It's weird but i've never been to the Rose Bowl fm, the PCC fm is free and exhausting enough(to me), the big one is probably more than i need.

tremendoid, Tuesday, 10 July 2007 06:20 (eighteen years ago)

More stupid but necessary questions-

IKEA Burbank vs. IKEA Carson City?
Is there a Los Angeles equivalent to the Pacific Film Archive? I probably asked this somewhere before but I don't remember.
Also - best streets for turning left.

admrl, Thursday, 12 July 2007 19:23 (eighteen years ago)

ive never been to the carson city ikea but the burbank one is great, as ikeas go.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 12 July 2007 19:44 (eighteen years ago)

its popular. still has the numbers to justify it's existence.

chaki, Thursday, 12 July 2007 19:45 (eighteen years ago)

When I was a kid I got admitted to a special "underground" tour of Disneyland. The whole infrastucture of that place is pretty amazing, actually. Even as an 11 year-old I could appreciate the genius of it - the ride control center, the trash being crushed and shot through mile-long pipes at high speed, etc. Then I saw Goofy's head hanging on a hook on the wall, tongue loose and dangling, and got freaked the fuck out.

So apparently the House of Blues in Anaheim is not, after some sort of problem this past week, hosting rock shows anymore, at the request of their benevolent host corporation, Disney. Anyone know what happened? I'm missing Lordi on Monday because of that =(.

Jeff Treppel, Friday, 20 July 2007 23:38 (eighteen years ago)

Everybody is referring to tomorrow as DAFT PUNK DAY - it makes me happy.

great fookin show. spencer and max what did you think? i think an ilxor came up to me and said hi while i was sleeping on the bench in front of the floor entrance and i dont remember 3 out of the 5 people that did that. back to party.

chaki, Sunday, 22 July 2007 10:06 (eighteen years ago)

terrific!!! were you there for the whole thing? i thought sebastian & kavinsky had 2 great sets (only time ive ever really danced to rage against the machine), ratatat totally won me over (the windmill! bending over backwards!), and those french robot fucks blew me away. i was up in the concourse, which almost ruined it at first since no one danced through the first 3 sets, but by the time DP came on everyone was standing up and grooving. we were dancing on this platform suspending over the entrance to our section of the concourse/loge, and they came by every half hour to kick us off and the minute they left we went right back on. people were really friendly, not that creepy to the cuet girls in my company, good dancers, enthusiastic!! how was the floor? from where we were it looked like not enough ppl were dancing, but i still would rather have been cutting a rug on that motherfucker. and the light show! quelle magnifique!! (highlights of last 20 minutes obviously the all-white ending, the red line suits, and then when they turn around at the very end).

i'm about to make my first venture to the DOWNTOWN RALPH'S ooh boy! this is almost as exciting as when new york city got its first trader joe's. (am i being facetious? i don't even know anymore.)

downtown has ARRIVED

get bent, Tuesday, 24 July 2007 23:25 (eighteen years ago)

what is it?

admrl, Tuesday, 24 July 2007 23:26 (eighteen years ago)

ralph's is a prominent west coast chain of supermarkets. (and they just narrowly missed having their employees go on strike.)

get bent, Tuesday, 24 July 2007 23:27 (eighteen years ago)

Their website tells me the closest store is 144 miles from here!

admrl, Tuesday, 24 July 2007 23:30 (eighteen years ago)

San Luis Obispo

admrl, Tuesday, 24 July 2007 23:30 (eighteen years ago)

Is this another of these chains that's banned from the Bay Area?

admrl, Tuesday, 24 July 2007 23:31 (eighteen years ago)

First they took the Walmarts, then the firearms.

admrl, Tuesday, 24 July 2007 23:32 (eighteen years ago)

about time we ban the bay area amirite

tremendoid, Tuesday, 24 July 2007 23:33 (eighteen years ago)

theres a ralphs in south central im pretty sure.

chaki, Tuesday, 24 July 2007 23:37 (eighteen years ago)

Ralph's is just like Safeway.

Spencer Chow, Tuesday, 24 July 2007 23:40 (eighteen years ago)

Also, Ratatat were a serious downer (and also suck), which only made Daft Punk all the more exciting.

Spencer Chow, Tuesday, 24 July 2007 23:40 (eighteen years ago)

yah they were TERRIBLE

chaki, Tuesday, 24 July 2007 23:42 (eighteen years ago)

max, Tuesday, 24 July 2007 23:48 (eighteen years ago)

I think it's like $70 for a one-day.

Everyone thought I was on something at Daft Punk but I was fueled only by a large sugar-free redbull and one vodka and soda!

Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 00:34 (eighteen years ago)

Ralph's nearly went on strike again? Totally missed that. Oh well, I shop at Gelson's anyway. Far superior to Ralph's, although also more expensive. And I don't quite get why the downtown Ralph's is such a big deal, if you desperately wanted to go to Ralph's there's one on Vermont and Adams. I mean, it's pretty sketchy, but it's only like a 10 minute drive. Were there no supermarkets downtown?

Jeff Treppel, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 00:36 (eighteen years ago)

its not really a big deal.

chaki, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 00:37 (eighteen years ago)

If you don't want to go to Vermont and Adams in your new BMW, it's a big deal.

humansuit, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 00:39 (eighteen years ago)

It's right by USC, so it isn't like tons of kids aren't going there in their new BMWs anyway.

Jeff Treppel, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 00:41 (eighteen years ago)

and theres a dood selling boot dvds and cds outside sometimes

chaki, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 00:43 (eighteen years ago)

I lived like two blocks east of that Ralph's, and it was perfectly fine. Well, except for the fact that I had my car stereo stolen out of my Honda Civic. While it was in my building's parking garage. Okay, that area sucks.

Jeff Treppel, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 00:48 (eighteen years ago)

The Ralph's thing is a big deal because NO ONE lived in downtown for a long time. The only activity was during business hours and then it was abandoned at night. Now that there are people living downtown, there's a reason to have a supermarket.

Spencer Chow, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 00:55 (eighteen years ago)

Ratatat are MAJORLY lame. I am sorry people had to suffer.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 00:59 (eighteen years ago)

I have NO IDEA why they are supported/name-checked by so many good people.

Spencer Chow, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 01:03 (eighteen years ago)

Fuck knows. Were you there when they opened for Mouse on Mars? Yipes.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 01:09 (eighteen years ago)

Yep, is there a defend the indefensible thread for them???

Spencer Chow, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 01:14 (eighteen years ago)

Well there's this:

Ratatat

Which has right near the top:

And I don't quite get why the downtown Ralph's is such a big deal, if you desperately wanted to go to Ralph's there's one on Vermont and Adams.

yeah, i used to go to that one when i lived near usc. the major draw (since i'm carless) was the free door-to-door shuttle service. it's a pretty good ralph's and it kind of is a big deal that there's one in south l.a. even if it is near usc. it's a sign that banks are more willing now to loan money to entrepreneurs who aren't interested in opening another liquor store or mickey d's franchise. tho there's still a LOT of crappy businesses down by usc.

the downtown ralph's is a big deal because there's finally enough of a critical mass that a major supermarket has a neighborhood to support it. it looks nice from an urban design perspective -- it fits in well with the streetscape, hides the parking away in a vertical garage rather than a mall-style lot, and doesn't have obnoxious signage. inside it's basically a whole foods that sells mainstream products -- roomy, "upscale"-looking, emphasis on premium goods, lots of cheese and bread, decent wine selection, steam tables, places to sit and have lunch.

get bent, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 01:59 (eighteen years ago)

thanks!

admrl, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 01:59 (eighteen years ago)

gelson's is soooo expensive, i have to stop shopping there.
ralph's has gone down in quality i feel since i moved here 12 years ago, especially after the last strike, but that downtown one is their deluxe brand, fresh fare or some such, so it sounds like a mainstream gourmet/whole foods approximation.

oh, and if you miss safeway, go to Vons, it's owned by safeway (vons is pretty lame tho, and its slightly upscale version, Pavillions, ain't that great either)

gershy, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 02:49 (eighteen years ago)

Depending on what you get/what's on sale, Gelson's can be pretty comparable to the other stores. They don't have a club card or anything, and yes, it's more upscale and cost more money, but the trick is to get the good stuff there (lunchmeat, cheese, bread, fruits/vegetables, fish) and get the namebrand products at Ralph's or Albertsons or whatever. There is a definite and distinct difference between their produce and other supermarkets' produce.

Jeff Treppel, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 03:16 (eighteen years ago)

i abhor "club cards." i often go out of my way to avoid stores that use them just so i won't have to go through the demeaning ritual of telling the cashier "no, i don't have one, and no i don't want one" and having her be all "waht you don't want to saev MONEY??"

get bent, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 03:19 (eighteen years ago)

ugh, gelson's is super-over-priced old lady selection of food. i sorta hate it. it's the kind of place that sells carrots pre-peeled for 400% markup, and croutons made with imported sheep's cheese for $7/box. i can usually make a good sweep shopping @ pavilions, vons, and whole foods for bulk stuff, w. specialty items from surfas -- which, conveniently, is right nearby.

remy bean, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 03:46 (eighteen years ago)

i get my produce at the eagle rock farmer's market and its terrific! for most other stuff its either super A or trader joe's.

max, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 03:47 (eighteen years ago)

Not on the subject of supermarkets --

Hey, any of you guys driving down to San Diego Comic Con this weekend?

Jeff Treppel, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 03:49 (eighteen years ago)

(I swear to god, I'm not nearly as cranky in person as I seem on this thread)

Jeff Treppel, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 03:49 (eighteen years ago)

u gotta place to stay? rooms are precious and rare.

chaki, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 06:36 (eighteen years ago)

The first couple years I went, I stayed with a friend who lives like 10 minutes from the convention center, but now my parents live about 30 minutes north, so I have a perfect place to stay.

Spencer Chow, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 22:54 (eighteen years ago)

We've done this before but I forget - where is like a huge used bookstore full of crazy finds? I am worried that the Bay Area has spoilt me for this but prove me wrong.

admrl, Thursday, 26 July 2007 16:41 (eighteen years ago)

Also because I asked Spencer and he said "NOBODY READS".

admrl, Thursday, 26 July 2007 16:42 (eighteen years ago)

Regrettably he's not far from the truth...

Anyway Elvis T. to thread on that one. Working all these years in a library has spoiled me, I just expect to get whatever books I want to read whenever I'd like.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 26 July 2007 16:44 (eighteen years ago)

I seem to remember Elvis always recommends that huge place in Long Beach? I'm pretty interested in going to Long Beach, I've never really been there.

admrl, Thursday, 26 July 2007 16:47 (eighteen years ago)

Can I also just say that my new school has a CRAZY library? It has a fossil collection for some reason. Also bizarre retro-lounge area with sofa/turntable combos for listening to rekkids.

admrl, Thursday, 26 July 2007 16:49 (eighteen years ago)

What's your school again? And yeah, I was trying to dig up the info on the Long Beach spot just now.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 26 July 2007 16:49 (eighteen years ago)

Long Beach FAP I'd be more than fine with sometime.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 26 July 2007 16:50 (eighteen years ago)

Okay, here's the spot in Long Beach:

Acres of Books.

dude your school has lots of crazy shit. please invite me to parties. i havent been in a long time.

chaki, Thursday, 26 July 2007 17:52 (eighteen years ago)

Of course, chaki! Please come! The parties...do look interesting. I see that a deranged looking Liz Taylor was there recently. I went to an opening there in April and it was pretty crazy.

admrl, Thursday, 26 July 2007 17:56 (eighteen years ago)

I seem to remember Elvis always recommends that huge place in Long Beach? I'm pretty interested in going to Long Beach, I've never really been there.

Aye. Acres Of Books is the A#1 spot to go to. It's also directly across from a Blue Line station so you really have no excuse not to go.

max, Sunday, 29 July 2007 02:59 (eighteen years ago)

Adam, I would totally go to parties there. Let me know when you're ready to start heading out. I know of some fun stuff.

Spencer Chow, Sunday, 29 July 2007 03:30 (eighteen years ago)

There are tales there.

So, tonight I went for the first time to the LA Memorial Coliseum to see the Galaxy against Chivas. Good experience and nice venue; after years of seeing it in TV broadcasts and the like, the real thing was a pleasure to be at.

Also hit up the glorious Shik Do Rak for dinner. Friend Jorge, by his own account a very picky eater, thought it was fantastic. Another convert made!

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 29 July 2007 05:04 (eighteen years ago)

i heard on the news that there were hardly any galaxy fans there, but the chivas love was overwhelming.

get bent, Sunday, 29 July 2007 15:24 (eighteen years ago)

It's true. Sadly.

humansuit, Sunday, 29 July 2007 18:18 (eighteen years ago)

Oh, very true. Though I got the sense that a lot of people there are Galaxy fans most of the time *except* when a Mexican team is involved. And I couldn't blame 'em.

Beckham was suited up but not playing and I bet anything after the first half he was all "What did I get myself into again?"

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 29 July 2007 18:33 (eighteen years ago)

I saw Chivas play Barcelona at the Coliseum last summer! Terrible football, but it was a fun day.

admrl, Monday, 30 July 2007 02:00 (eighteen years ago)

Was it real Chivas (as was the case last night) or Chivas USA?

Ned Raggett, Monday, 30 July 2007 02:01 (eighteen years ago)

Meantime, Gustavo Arellano lays the smackdown on Santa Ana's leaders. Very deservedly too.
