New York I am In Your Area 24th-31st: Fancy a, you know, Pint?

Between the 24th and the 31st Jan I'm knocking around Manhattan, exploiting the strong pound for all its worth (ie not getting antsy about tipping). What's say a few of New York's ILxors Fancy-a-pint.

I'm staying in the Gramercy Park area but will be skipping all over town. So if you want to see the man that London radio listenrs are calling "the dude who talks too fast" say so here!

Pete (Pete), Thursday, 18 January 2007 15:20 (nineteen years ago)

david murray is at the jazz standard (which will be walking distance for you) the night of the 24th, and greg osby will be there the next four nights

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 18 January 2007 15:34 (nineteen years ago)

And if I'm not so sold on Jazz...

Pete (Pete), Thursday, 18 January 2007 15:56 (nineteen years ago)

dude you better tip when you get over here or you will be chased in the streets by angry bartenders

Mr. Que (Mr.Que), Thursday, 18 January 2007 15:56 (nineteen years ago)

pete, that band the early years i was drinking with in the pub when we met up last month in london is playing on the 25th (mercury lounge), 26th (union hall, brooklyn) and 27th (union pool, brooklyn).

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 18 January 2007 15:57 (nineteen years ago)

Maybe Pete should experience a New York City pub quiz?

Euai Kapaui (tracerhand), Thursday, 18 January 2007 15:58 (nineteen years ago)

That's more my level. Current champeen at the Three Compasses, that Simon Pegg's regular quiz. (Well he's not been in months, but you know...)

Pete (Pete), Thursday, 18 January 2007 16:02 (nineteen years ago)

I think Magnetic Fields in Brooklyn has one, and I'm pretty sure there was one at Joe's Pub and one at the Cowgirl Hall of Fame as well.

Euai Kapaui (tracerhand), Thursday, 18 January 2007 16:05 (nineteen years ago)

DAEREST Mr Que, pls see:

Embarrassing things Europeans do while visiting America..

we know ALL about it, innit.

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Thursday, 18 January 2007 16:07 (nineteen years ago)

Hey, Claudia Acuña is at the Jazz Standard this week. Thanks for the tip gabbneb.

The Redd And The Blecch (Ken L), Thursday, 18 January 2007 16:10 (nineteen years ago)

I will be out of town, sorry to miss you Pete, if this is the Pete and not another UK Pete.

wait, i'm in new york, take me to karaoke

say it with blood diamonds (a_p), Thursday, 18 January 2007 16:19 (nineteen years ago)

The only pub quiz I'm familiar with is the one with Liam at Irish bar on the East side in the...high 20s? Can't remember name of bar. Best one I've been to yet, though -- Magnetic Field in Bklyn can't compare.

Laurel (Laurel), Thursday, 18 January 2007 16:26 (nineteen years ago)

I hate karaoke but could do for special occasion. Do we prefer private room or open bar?

Laurel (Laurel), Thursday, 18 January 2007 16:27 (nineteen years ago)

I hope you guys realize what you're letting yourselves in for.

Euai Kapaui (tracerhand), Thursday, 18 January 2007 16:29 (nineteen years ago)

No idea! Prob better that way?

Laurel (Laurel), Thursday, 18 January 2007 16:29 (nineteen years ago)

Rocky Sullivan's at Lex between 28/29th! If this pub quiz is still going on, I highly recommend it. Been years since we went regularly, though.

Laurel (Laurel), Thursday, 18 January 2007 16:37 (nineteen years ago)

I just re-read that thread and my head hurts. I have also realised I never tip food delivery people and this may cause a foofarah! Gosh. Er, anyway, have a pint with Pete, keep him off the streets.

Bhumibol Adulyadej (Lucretia My Reflection), Thursday, 18 January 2007 16:48 (nineteen years ago)

Let's be fair, that's not exactly a schelp for me - indeed it might even be mine hosts local! But the Thursday night pub quiz looks like an ideal way to spend a bit of time. Whose with me?

Pete (Pete), Thursday, 18 January 2007 17:00 (nineteen years ago)

no pub quizzes here - http://www.rodeobar.com/

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 18 January 2007 17:02 (nineteen years ago)

AARRRRGHGHGH I can't, Pete, I have a Burns night gig on the 25th. Depending on what time it gets out, I can come and meet you, but I can't make the early evening start time.

Laurel (Laurel), Thursday, 18 January 2007 17:03 (nineteen years ago)

there is always pete's candy store quiz off but it is way too crowded now and isn;t there a popular one in the west village.

asked my baby for a nickel she gave me a 2 dollar whore (Carey), Thursday, 18 January 2007 17:09 (nineteen years ago)

Hey no sweat, I am there for a week. I do a pub quiz every week over here, I don't have to do one in the big apple.

Pete (Pete), Thursday, 18 January 2007 17:10 (nineteen years ago)

Rocky Sullivan's at Lex between 28/29th! If this pub quiz is still going on, I highly recommend it. Been years since we went regularly, though.

Oh man! I used to go to this every week, like five years ago. Loved it.

g00blar (gooblar), Thursday, 18 January 2007 17:10 (nineteen years ago)

Me too! Were you there for the punk rock guest round, or the Australian trivia one?

Laurel (Laurel), Thursday, 18 January 2007 17:12 (nineteen years ago)

I have no memory of either of those, but that doesn't mean much. Used to go with my older brother and his friends.

g00blar (gooblar), Thursday, 18 January 2007 17:17 (nineteen years ago)

Rocky Sullivan's made me think I'd love pub quizzes over here (in London), but (of course), I discovered quickly that if yr not a brit you have no chance whatsoever. Half the questions are football/old tv/british political history, etc.

g00blar (gooblar), Thursday, 18 January 2007 17:18 (nineteen years ago)

Please please please take Pete to karaoke. You haven't met him properly unless you've encountered The Voice.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 18 January 2007 17:20 (nineteen years ago)

Punk round was opened with the joke "What's the difference between a hippie and an onion? Ans: You don't cry when you cut a hippie." Our rival team (Samurai Squirrels) full of SCA-members and men with long ponytails and girls in ankle-length crinkle skirts wept and moaned. What was yr bro's team name?

Laurel (Laurel), Thursday, 18 January 2007 17:20 (nineteen years ago)

Ach, that's gonna take me some time to remember. I'll give it my best.

(I'm so helpful, aren't I?)

g00blar (gooblar), Thursday, 18 January 2007 17:22 (nineteen years ago)

Taco Stars!

g00blar (gooblar), Thursday, 18 January 2007 18:08 (nineteen years ago)

Hahahha. Pub quiz missed connections, FIVE YEARS LATER.

Laurel (Laurel), Thursday, 18 January 2007 18:14 (nineteen years ago)

Oh no, Taco Stars! I think I may have accidentally hated you, mostly for often fielding a team with more members than the maximum number of pints given to the winning side.

Dickerson Pike (Dickerson Pike), Thursday, 18 January 2007 18:34 (nineteen years ago)

"accidentally"

Yeah, I was often one of the extra members 'cause I'd tag a long with my brother.

g00blar (gooblar), Thursday, 18 January 2007 18:36 (nineteen years ago)

Also let us never forget the time Brian discovered that another team (Squirrels, I think) was cheating because he read a team members BLOG.

Laurel (Laurel), Thursday, 18 January 2007 18:41 (nineteen years ago)

My friends from Australia who were regulars on our team were just visiting last week! We made lots of nostalgic jokes, ie

Quiz master: "I'm looking for an actress--"
Bar: "ANY ACTRESS??"

Laurel (Laurel), Thursday, 18 January 2007 18:42 (nineteen years ago)

ROFL

g00blar (gooblar), Thursday, 18 January 2007 18:49 (nineteen years ago)

1. THE QUIZMASTER IS ALWAYS RIGHT
2. DON'T FUCK WITH THE GUEST QUIZMASTER

Pub quizzes in Nashville are the pits. They're run by some independent small business with a name like "Trivia Time" and the questions seem to have been harvested by idiotic Google searches. And there's some sort of formulaic call-and-response "rapport" between the regulars (who name their teams with "naughty" "puns") and the personality-less hosts. What's worse is the alleged-hipster Vandy team that shows up everywhere in huge numbers, barely drinks so that they risk little and so the $50 credit you get for winning covers their one-pint-per-person tab-- and note this: they don't tip on the $50 credit. Scumbags.

Dickerson Pike (Dickerson Pike), Thursday, 18 January 2007 18:56 (nineteen years ago)

Hey, the pub quiz at the Lipstick Lounge was exponentially better than the one at Flying Saucer or 3 Crow. And, the really lovely lesbians made a fine sandwich!

molly mummenschanz (mollyd), Thursday, 18 January 2007 19:08 (nineteen years ago)

Hmm, nice to see all this nostalgia, but

AHEM!

Pete (Pete), Thursday, 18 January 2007 19:32 (nineteen years ago)

I'll be around for the later part of this, so I'll check back for FAP details. :) Unfortunately I'm no good for suggestions about where to go.

lyra (lyra), Friday, 19 January 2007 01:40 (nineteen years ago)

Ben, is that the quiz you took me and meg to, very irish pub, pics of b0bby s4nds on the wall etc?

sorry pete.

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Friday, 19 January 2007 11:21 (nineteen years ago)

Steve, that's the one. Also "Stop the McA11ister Family Deportations," and that famous picture of the dirty protests, but I think its days of being a place where the English get fucked with are over.

Dickerson Pike (Dickerson Pike), Friday, 19 January 2007 16:48 (nineteen years ago)

ALTHO, someone did give Aussie David a bit of a hard time at the bar in those days...until he smiled winningly and said "wrong country, mate" and the guys bought his drinks, instead! Those Australians, who doesn't love 'em. (Hi, Steve and Meg!)

Laurel (Laurel), Friday, 19 January 2007 17:05 (nineteen years ago)

Oh, in which case I've been there too. If it wasn't the same night, it was another night for late doors drinking (I certainly remember mucho Bobby Sandsiness). They thought I was Irish, cos I had an "accent". HA HA, the joke was on them: I speak wot like the Queen does!

Pete (Pete), Saturday, 20 January 2007 01:28 (nineteen years ago)

there is always pete's candy store quiz off but it is way too crowded now and isn;t there a popular one in the west village.

i'm co-hosting this week's quiz-off at pete's! i expect it to be a lot better than my last (ie first) time hosting. um er just wanted to say. carry on.

joseph (joseph), Saturday, 20 January 2007 08:21 (nineteen years ago)

Anyway. In your area. Anyone going to be around. ETC ETC.

Or tell me where you will be and I'll bug ye.

Pete (Pete), Monday, 22 January 2007 15:35 (nineteen years ago)

Here's the deal: I am AWOL on the 25th and the 27th due to Scots pride celebration engagements. Other nights are currently free, plus Monday PM is the regular noise bored-ish drinking engagement when you can meet us all in one swell foop. Will email you about that, you should come. Cannot suggest any shows as I make a point of never going out of my way or standing in line for live music.

Laurel (Laurel), Monday, 22 January 2007 15:40 (nineteen years ago)

Ptee is also after "British style bacon"!!

Those of you who knows what this means, does it even exist in New York?

Euai Kapaui (tracerhand), Monday, 22 January 2007 15:44 (nineteen years ago)

st. dymphna on st. mark's place serves it as part of their irish breakfast. there's also tea and sympathy in the west village, and a few places in brooklyn - the chip shop in park slope, for instance, and an upscale irish pub (!) called slainte or something on smith street. there are pubs in woodside/sunnyside that do food, but i have no idea about them.

lauren (laurenp), Monday, 22 January 2007 16:00 (nineteen years ago)

Cheers Lauren./ Monday PM sounds like a perfect engagement for a shy, retiring type like me!

Bacon is not for me!

Pete (Pete), Monday, 22 January 2007 16:25 (nineteen years ago)

Pete, so are you bringing Simon Pegg with you?

I'd be up for a pint some time over the weekend, seeing as how I've been laying pretty low lately (not depressed just busy). Think we could pick somewhere in lower Manhattan or even perhaps my neighborhood (Smith Street in Brooklyn)?

Aaron W (Aaron W), Monday, 22 January 2007 17:00 (nineteen years ago)

I AM Simon Pegg. Well, he is a lookeelike of me!

I like Bacon. But the bacon is for other people. I can eat bacon whenever I want round here. I'm not sure of weekend movements but I am sure we can work something out. E-mail me off board.

Pete (Pete), Monday, 22 January 2007 18:12 (nineteen years ago)

So the Affair are playin at the Mercury Lounge on Friday at 8:30. How bout that for a meet-up, since I'm guess Y@ncey and Lauren will be there?

Aaron W (Aaron W), Wednesday, 24 January 2007 19:06 (nineteen years ago)

gah! sadly, i'm going to be unavailable fri-sun this weekend.

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 24 January 2007 19:14 (nineteen years ago)

Ah well. I've offered to meet up with Pete for a pint, so hopefully he will email once he's settled. I'm afraid that we're all pretty crap at staying in touch, huh? Well, I am at least! (Hi Lauren!)

Aaron W (Aaron W), Wednesday, 24 January 2007 19:15 (nineteen years ago)

oh, i'm totally guilty of that!

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 24 January 2007 19:19 (nineteen years ago)

oh look its aaron w!

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 24 January 2007 19:26 (nineteen years ago)

I'm avail on Friday (for a change). Should we make the gig official?

Laurel (Laurel), Wednesday, 24 January 2007 19:27 (nineteen years ago)

Oh look it's Phil! Congrats on the book, btw!!

I'd be up for descending on Y@ncey's friend's band's gig and then grabbing a drink or 12 in the LES/E Village vicinity.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Wednesday, 24 January 2007 19:42 (nineteen years ago)

there is always pete's candy store quiz off but it is way too crowded now and isn;t there a popular one in the west village.

more grease in the pianissimo. (tehresa), Thursday, 25 January 2007 00:13 (nineteen years ago)

I am good for Friday @Mercury! (and Pete's sometime)

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 25 January 2007 15:11 (nineteen years ago)

Good, Friday it is. I'll go to Pete's sometime, too, cos it's on my bus line.

Laurel (Laurel), Thursday, 25 January 2007 15:17 (nineteen years ago)

hey pete, watch ep 5 of 24 over there so i can download and watch it now. plz. thx. bye

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Thursday, 25 January 2007 15:23 (nineteen years ago)

Aaron, I reckon Sunday is good for a afternoon / evening beer. Not sure I can do the Mercury Lounge on Friday, other plans are coalescing at the moment - though may be able to shift them in that direction. Am free tonight if any ideas drift, but easily distracted.

Alan, I'll see what I can do. I reckon episode 5 is going to be tres emo anyway.

Pete (Pete), Thursday, 25 January 2007 17:00 (nineteen years ago)

Glad that groupthink has managed to come up with plans! So, there's a 90% chance that I'll be at the Mercury for the Affair at 8:30 and then maybe drinks in the vicinity afterward. Pete, I guess give me a ring if you think your plans will bring you in that direction (E Village/Lower East Side).

Tonight won't work for me but I'd be up for a meet-up on Sunday afternoon/evening meet-up. The other option is Sunday brunch, which is a real NYC tradition. There's Pete's Tavern and Friend of a Farmer in the Gramercy Park area.

Oh, and please note that tomorrow will be the coldest day in NY in two years so bundle up!!

Aaron W (Aaron W), Thursday, 25 January 2007 17:13 (nineteen years ago)

Vincinity drinks may be all I can make tomorrow, but we'll see! Sunday is definately a goer either brunch or beyond.

Pete (Pete), Thursday, 25 January 2007 17:39 (nineteen years ago)

I haven't had a night off yet this week and Friday's my only free time, so if Pete's not going to make it, I think I cancel. Sorry, everyone. Brunch on Sun could totally do, though.

Laurel (Laurel), Thursday, 25 January 2007 17:42 (nineteen years ago)

i don't know pete but i love brunch and would be totally down!

more grease in the pianissimo. (tehresa), Thursday, 25 January 2007 23:45 (nineteen years ago)

what night is this? so close, i should go sometime!

oh whoops, didn't see this. quizz-off is every wednesday at pete's. hosting is kind of fucking harrowing if you don't really know what you're doing (and have, like, 26 teams like we did).

morbs you should join our team sometime! we haven't won any post-finals rounds yet :(

joseph (joseph), Friday, 26 January 2007 00:13 (nineteen years ago)

this place in murray hill is supposed to be good for brunch

gabbneb (gabbneb), Friday, 26 January 2007 00:32 (nineteen years ago)

OK, lets say Brunch on Sunday, name a place and time and I will be there (possibly dragging my hosts, though they will probably be sick of me by then.)

Note, I will try to use this as an excuse to KEEP DRINKING ALL DAY...

Pete (Pete), Friday, 26 January 2007 12:58 (nineteen years ago)

Note, I will try to use this as an excuse to KEEP DRINKING ALL DAY...

that's the only way to do it, really.

the art of pretend non-lawyering. (tehresa), Friday, 26 January 2007 13:04 (nineteen years ago)

Great! So, Brunch on Sunday it is. Gabbneb's place looks nice but Friend of a Farmer and Pete's Tavern are right around the corner from where our kid Pete is staying. Maybe we should aim for Friend of a Farmer and if the line is too long (it tends to be) than we'll use Pete's Tavern as the fallback. How bout 1pm? We can meet out front. Here's the website: http://www.friendofafarmer.com/

I'll be at the Mercury Lounge tonight. It's going to be really fucking cold but there's always drinks afterwards.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Friday, 26 January 2007 15:55 (nineteen years ago)

1pm good. Though how is Friend Of A Farmer for Bloody Mary's?

Pete (Pete), Friday, 26 January 2007 17:42 (nineteen years ago)

sorry to kibbitz again, but if you're really into bloody marys, you should check out Prune

gabbneb (gabbneb), Friday, 26 January 2007 17:46 (nineteen years ago)

but not with a group.

lauren (laurenp), Friday, 26 January 2007 17:47 (nineteen years ago)

I'm not really into 'em (you lot see to make them with vodka which is wrong) but they are nice with brunch...

Actually it wouldn't matter, since a post brunch crawl eems on the cards. Waiting outside in this weather seems foolish though...

Pete (Pete), Friday, 26 January 2007 18:01 (nineteen years ago)

I'm pretty sure that Friend of a Farmer will have bloody marys, and if not I know for sure that Pete's Tavern will. The food at Friend of a Farmer is much better than Pete's, although it does tend to get crowded and hence the backup plan.

But then if we don't want to wait outside we could just go with Pete's instead. O Henry used to hang out there.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Friday, 26 January 2007 19:11 (nineteen years ago)

FoaF it is,obv. See you there...

Pete (Pete), Saturday, 27 January 2007 06:30 (eighteen years ago)

the art of pretend non-lawyering. (tehresa), Saturday, 27 January 2007 09:14 (eighteen years ago)

There are many photos on this site of me. NONE OF THEM FLATTERING. (A search on Trig Brother threds usually have the biggest horrors).

Frankly absolutely no pre-requisite of knowing me, or my schtick is required. Lonely hearts ad sort of goes: Short blond, talks too fast, addicted to the TRUTH, enjoys a beer or eight while the world turns.

Pete (Pete), Saturday, 27 January 2007 14:53 (eighteen years ago)

Hi all.... Pete, got your message last night. I'm embarrassed to say that I was already in bed, having not even made it out to the Mercury Lounge as promised. My life has become kind of pathetic. It's a fact!

BUT we shall all meet in front of Friend of a Farmer at 1pm. To make this easier, I will be wearing my Arsenal scarf (who will have beaten Bolton by this time), black wool coat, blue hat. I've met Laurel once and obv know what Pete looks like so this shouldn't be too difficult to manage. See you all there!

Aaron W (Aaron W), Saturday, 27 January 2007 17:24 (eighteen years ago)

the art of pretend non-lawyering. (tehresa), Sunday, 28 January 2007 16:00 (eighteen years ago)

Right! See you all soon. Again, I've got black wool coat, light blue hat, red Arsenal scarf, brown hair, tall-ish, etc.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Sunday, 28 January 2007 16:21 (eighteen years ago)

Again I am short, devestatingly attactive and shell-shocked by American political TV shows.

It will take me two minutes to get there...

Aresenal 0-0 Bolton as we speak, are you sure about that scarf?

Pete (Pete), Sunday, 28 January 2007 16:36 (eighteen years ago)

Oh Arsenal will pull through... If not, eh it's just the FA.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Sunday, 28 January 2007 16:44 (eighteen years ago)

JUST THE FA CUP! Oh the humanity. I barely got through yesterday after the gargoyles stiffed us.

Pete (Pete), Sunday, 28 January 2007 16:45 (eighteen years ago)

yes like pete, i am the hottest person you have ever seen so there will be no way to miss me!

ok i kid. not hot at all. but i have a white eyebrow. i think that's why people stare at me on the train. or maybe they just do that because i am weird.

i will probably have on a black peacoat and orangey-red scarf. also, laurel knows what i look like.

the art of pretend non-lawyering. (tehresa), Sunday, 28 January 2007 16:57 (eighteen years ago)

Nice to meet up for brunch! For future reference, we give a thumb's down to Pete's Tavern. I've actually been a bit sick all day!!! So it is not actually a good idea to bring guests from out of town to restaurants bearing their name.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Monday, 29 January 2007 00:51 (eighteen years ago)

my food was not bad but the bloody mary was incredibly sub par :(

but hey, ww tomorrow night - we will get pete properly trashed for $6!

the art of pretend non-lawyering. (tehresa), Monday, 29 January 2007 04:53 (eighteen years ago)

I'm not having a bloody mary again until someone in the know makes me one. I've had two bad ones now and I give up on them.

Laurel (Laurel), Monday, 29 January 2007 05:00 (eighteen years ago)

:(

it's not the bloody mary's fault, i swear!!!!

i hear enids has good ones, and i've had decent ones at harefield road. i think i had one at ww once but i was too drunk already to really tell how good it was. my guess is it was STRONG (hello, it was ww) so it was proabbly grebt!

maybe i will experiment with making them sometime but i am kind of opposed to buying vodka.

the art of pretend non-lawyering. (tehresa), Monday, 29 January 2007 05:04 (eighteen years ago)

it's not the bloody mary's fault, i swear!!!!

the art of pretend non-lawyering. (tehresa), Monday, 29 January 2007 05:04 (eighteen years ago)

It wasn't my fault, and I'm called Pete.

Gin Bloody Mary's, or getTracer back. His are mean!

Pete (Pete), Monday, 29 January 2007 16:15 (eighteen years ago)

What's happening tonight? WW = Whiskey Ward?

Paul Eater (eater), Monday, 29 January 2007 16:42 (eighteen years ago)

Yep!

Laurel (Laurel), Monday, 29 January 2007 16:43 (eighteen years ago)

Good, because I didn't have a second guess. I'll be partying elsewhere nearby tonight, but I'll try to swing by!

Paul Eater (eater), Monday, 29 January 2007 16:56 (eighteen years ago)

enid's has pretty damn good bloody marys. i make pretty decent ones at home now, kinda following theirs (and daddy's) similar formulas.

i might try to make ww tonight despite being totally "knackered" (as they say) from this weekend.
