Students at a Texas college threw a Martin Luther King Jr. Day party that featured attendees wearing gang apparel and Afro wigs, carrying malt liquor, handguns, and fried chicken, and even one woman dressed as Aunt Jemima.

"It is second chance beer of the Coors Brewing Company. Because Keystone comes from the second-chance portion of a batch of Coors, it has a lower price, and as a result is very popular among college students or those on a limited budget. According to the Coors Brewery Tour Guides, Keystone is not a second chance beer, but actually has its own recipe and brewing standards. The price of Keystone is low because Coors does not actively advertise for the Keystone brands."

in response to the statement in the description above, i did not die a little inside. i died a lot inside. stay strong, stay together, and keep fighting. here's another group if any of you are interested. For as long as I live, so will Chief Illiniwek WE LOVE YOU CHIEF! at 12:03pm is it not true that he has to learn the real dances/chants? I really don't understand why the NCAA would retire a symbol of a university unless it sends a degrading message. This, obviously, does not. It honors tradition in a good way. I wonder how much malice and hate Florida Gator fans have in their hearts when they do the infamous "Gator Chomp"? Lets stop them from the multi-million dollar business of hosting tournaments. If the NCAA feels as though they need to make an example of someone, make it somewhere else. Go Illini! at 8:38am Dear Friends, I read and signed "Loyalty to the Chief." Please take a moment to read about this important issue, and join me in signing the petition. It takes just 30 seconds, but can truly make a difference. We are trying to reach 16,692 signatures - please sign here: at 1:51am I'm not usually one to get highly emotional about things, but I couldn't even sing along with the alma mater because I was choked up.

i just want to say FUCK POLITICAL CORRECTNESS! That aside, I seriously think that getting rid of Chief Illiniwek was a blow to the name of college sports. There are a lot of teams that are named after tribes and shit, do they have their mascot taken? No. The thing that pisses me off the most about this is that the stipulations to wear the costume are ridiculous. They HAVE to be a certain amount of Native American, they HAVE to have some sort of background in it. Not only that, but the dance is a real dance. Who in the hell do these people think they are? I say we get a petition to bring Chied Illiniwek back. ---------- I would like to personally thank Dan and the former Chiefs for their years of service in carrying on our proud tradition here at the University of Illinois. You all carried yourselves with dignity and class every time you set foot on the playing surface and I & my family appreciate it a great deal. I would also like to remind the members of this group, that the Chief is retired but not gone or banned With help and support I believe we can bring him back at a later time! Judging by the numbers last night & today I would say, "the needs of the 'many' should be able to triumph over the complaints of a 'few'." ---------- Has anyone ever heard a comeback from anyone on why fighting irish is accepted and the Chief is so "racist" and "closeminded"? I don't understand why one is okay and is a sense of pride for a group of people, but another group of people, who people have tried hard not to offend, takes it all as an insult. It's a tribute to the state's past. I just don't understand it. ----------- The guy who wrote that article in the post dispatch is a moron...he says that we have been ignoring this for years but he obviously did not do his homework because we had the blessing of the last cheif of the ancestors of the illini tribe. It wasn't until recently when the last cheif died and a new cheif was elected that the tribe changed thier mind.... ----------- the fact that this happened makes me hate minorities ----------- Here's the Trib lady's email and the email for the editor: ----@tribune.com, -----@tribune.com Since when did the Chief do a tomahawk chop? I think it's time to flood her inbox asking for a correction.

I have a lot of opinions about this issue that probably aren't "politically correct" to post on this wall, but my question is this: Aren't there more important things going on in the world today that need to be dealt with than bitching about college mascots and symbols? For instance, why don't these people who must bitch about something put up a good fight to stop terrorism or child abuse or something of that nature. As a U of I alum, I can say their efforts would be much more appreciated in other areas than desecrating OUR CHIEF!!!!

Hamline University has suspended six players from its football team for donning blackface and body paint to dress up as African tribesmen for an off-campus Halloween party, an incident that has sparked a discussion about racial sensitivity at the St. Paul liberal arts college....The university is investigating the incident to find out whether the students violated policy, Hamline spokesman JacQui Getty said Sunday. Two cheerleaders who helped the players with their costumes and reportedly posted photos of them on the Internet social-networking site Facebook with a caption about "spooks" are also under investigation.Sophomore Tasha Simmons, a friend of the students involved, said the matter has been blown out of proportion and taken out of context. "People misunderstood," she said....Simmons said the costumes -- which included black Under Armour-type clothing and tight black pants -- were creative. "It wasn't supposed to be offensive whatsoever," she said.Using "spooks" also was not meant to offend anyone, she said. "If you would have seen them, you would have been spooked out. Most (students) don't correlate that term with the '50s," she said. "These are not the sort of people in any way who would discriminate against anyone."

Spook can mean:
* A female gecko * An alternative term (Dutch, from Middle Dutch spooc) for a ghost * A colloquial term for a spy * Spook (band), an Australian trip hop band. * A racial slur for a black person. * A character from The Wardstone Chronicles

Some of the stuff on that racial slur list is pretty wild:
Jewbu = Jews = A former person of the Jewish faith who has switched to Buddhism(apparently there are many).
Jumbo Jaws = Americans = The great big mutant chins many Yanks have.
Big mutant chins??

I think Norwegians tell these Finn jokes, where the main character is always called Pekka, because that's a very common first name here. But few Finnish people know about this, so if you'd shout "Pekka!" to a Finn, you'd most likely get no response, unless he is actually called Pekka.

That reminds me of this time I was in Mexico, visiting a friend and his family. I walked back to the apartment I was staying at, and their dog, Peluche, followed me home.
(Peluche is a term for a small fuzzy toy, something you'd get out of one of those crain machines.)
I get home and it's raining, and that damn dog wouldn't go back to his home. So I'm leaning out the window going "Peluche! Peluche!"
My friend comes down the street and puts his fingers to his lips to shush me. Turns out, peluche is also a term for a women's vagina, like "pussy" or "beaver".
So a gringo leaning out of a Mexican window calling out "Pussy!" to the neighborhood wasn't so great.

Hamilton = Indians = Rhyming slang in Scotland from a Scottish soccer team called Hamilton Academicals. This is shortened to Hamilton Accies (Akkies) a derogatory name for Indians.
Um, surely Hamilton Accies is rhyming slang for Pakis = Pakistanis.
― onimo, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 14:09 (eighteen years ago)
Anyway that is one hueg and scary list, even if it is occasionally wrong.
― onimo, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 14:11 (eighteen years ago)
Further on it points out (correctly) that in the UK Pakistanis and Indians (and anyone else from anywhere near the Indian sub continent tbh) are all lumped in together as "Pakis".
Paki = Indians = Short for Pakistani. Often not derogatory when used. In The UK many Indians and Pakistanis have been lumped under the same term. It's *much* more of a slur to Indians
This is apparently more insulting to Indians than Pakistanis, presumably because they hate Pakis :)

Othello = Blacks = Refers to black men who only date white women. Reference to the Shakespearean play of the same title about a black man named Othello married to a white woman.

Philip Roth's 2000 novel The Human Stain spun the tale of a light-skinned African-American who passes as Jewish, becomes a successful educator and is then undone in a political row after he refers to a pair of absent black students as "spooks". Perhaps prompted by the true-life case of civil servant David Howard (who lost his job when his use of the word "niggardly" was misconstrued as a racist insult), the book was at once a rumination on the American culture of self-invention and a ferocious assault on political-correctness that used the Clinton impeachment scandal as its touchstone. Robert Benton's well-toned adaptation is faithful to the letter of Roth's work, but a crucial ingredient is missing. There is no anger to the film at all.

― oɔsıqɐu (nabisco), Saturday, 27 February 2010 00:22 (fifteen years ago)
Or maybe it's a question: do you think whoever did that PURPOSEFULLY picked something kinda arcane and symbolic, so that the act would seem more harmless to lots of people? Or are they pansies who enjoy hate speech but are afraid to be more forward about it? Or what?
― oɔsıqɐu (nabisco), Saturday, 27 February 2010 00:26 (fifteen years ago)
yeah i'm not sure -- i would go with the latter tbh. it came off as an odd choice to me too but i was thinking that of all the racist symbols you could pick, cotton is probably the easiest to acquire

― mark roflr (Shakey Mo Collier), Saturday, 27 February 2010 00:33 (fifteen years ago)
yeah, and is technically like "littering" instead of vandalism or a violent threat
which I guess one should be happy about, but part of me is like ... "if you wanna make racist threats, at least step up a little"
― oɔsıqɐu (nabisco), Saturday, 27 February 2010 00:35 (fifteen years ago)
i just don't even know what the motivation behind this kind of thing is -- if it's to be "funny," you kind of immediately fail because no one is going to come out and go "yeah i thought this was funny" & obv if you aren't taking credit for the act i'm not even sure where the gratification comes from. isn't that the point of a prank? if the person is actually racist, then i would say that this is a pretty lame expression of those beliefs. it's certainly not couched in the same sort of motivations as "ghetto" parties
― waka flocka pedia (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 27 February 2010 00:35 (fifteen years ago)
c'mon racists, get your act together!
― mark roflr (Shakey Mo Collier), Saturday, 27 February 2010 00:38 (fifteen years ago)
ha, yeah, I really should just be happy that racists are expressing themselves through soft, fluffy, harmless things here, and not encourage them to step up.
j0rdan, isn't the motivation pretty much ... humiliation? I mean it's more or less just racial bullying -- exercising power by trying to demean, insult, and maybe frighten someone else. so we can be sensible people and say we don't see where the fun or satisfaction is with that, but we sort of do know, probably.
I wonder who had to pick it up, in the end
― oɔsıqɐu (nabisco), Saturday, 27 February 2010 00:46 (fifteen years ago)
One MU police officer attempted to pick up the cotton balls and throw them away, said sophomore JaNeé Harrell, who said another student told the officer to leave them.
Weimer said the officer had collected some of the cotton that was being blown about by the wind, but he stressed there was no effort to cover up what had happened.
“Typically with vandalism, one of the first things you do is clean it up,” he said, noting that officers had already taken photos of the display.
The cotton should be left in public view, “so every black on campus can recognize the hate crime,” Harrell said. “Every minority on campus should be offended, just as whites should be embarrassed.”

― kingkongvsgodzilla, Wednesday, 3 March 2010 12:19 (fifteen years ago)
Nearly all of The Koala's writing is intentionally politically incorrect. The paper has made fun of/attacked every race, ethnicity, religion, group, people with disabilities, sex, and sexual orientation, as well as recent national tragedies. No subject is taboo, and the The Koala made jokes about the September 11 attacks within days of the event. The paper also celebrates a hedonistic lifestyle including the use of alcohol, drugs, and pornography.

this fucking guy
Compton Cookout Part Deux: First Ammendment Pride
Recently, the UC Council of Provosts, several students, legislators, and the media, have all publicly condemned the recent PIKE-sponsored “Compton Cookout”.
The FACEBOOK EVENT page for the party is what started this horrendously misguided call to arms, and has people ignorantly shouting racism, intolerance, hate, and that this party invitation was “a mockery of black history month”.
As I have facilitated and attended hundreds of parties associated with UCSD students, I have never been to a party that was not a mockery of something. Additionally, parties are an innocent outlet for any kind of stress, and an arbitrary theme, satirizing some aspect of our cultures, is extremely commonplace for college parties. On Cinco de Mayo, we have parties making fun of Mexicans; on Veterens day, we make fun of veterans (yes, the same veterans who uphold our rights to free speech); on St. Patrick’s Day we make fun of the Irish. Everyone gets made fun of out of jest now, not hate.
This is not an issue of black or white. As a UCSD student, and even though I was not at this party, it is obvious to me that NO ONE INVOLVED IN THAT PARTY WAS PREACHING HATE, and when we observe the public reaction, it feels as if we are watching a bunch of children hurling canned PC responses at Stephen Colbert for being offensively conservative. DUH!
This is barely even an issue of free speech, because, like I said, no ideals were being preached, just passively and innocently mocked for the sake of having an excuse to eat delicious fried chicken and watermelon and drink malt liquor, which are all awesome things.
The inane email sent out to all UCSD students about this mentions that “thinking members of our community” should feel insulted, and despite the fact that said email was sent purely to save face and to appease the social requirement for a puritan display of delusionally misplaced compassion, as thinking members of the community, we should all be insulted at this overt assault on the civil rights of these students to free speech. If you truly care about civil rights, and you don’t just want to preach intolerance to cultural satire, then come to this party in honor of your favorite cultural stereotype to satirize and show these IDIOTS that intolerance is so 20th century, but coming together peaceably for the purpose of fun and unity is still very much in style.
So come get crunk with yo Peoplez, roll through with the Vatos, Crackers bring your favorite sister, get sandy with the Arabs, get Chinky with some saki bombs, throw up your fauxhawk with the Douchebags, get piss drunk with the Irish, come soaked in cologne with the Ginnys, bring some cheap wine with your Jew homies, get stupid like the Polish, pound vodka with your Russian friends, love humanity and embrace cultural differences through satire.
Don’t let ignorance and stupidity get in the way of our good time and let us set a precedent before this gets out of hand. We all must stand behind our fellow students. It would be nothing short of a tragedy for any students to suffer any punishment for what they wrote on a facebook page. We cannot allow this. The time for quelling this is now before it happens to you. We support Pi Kappa Alpha’s attempt to harmlessly make fun of those who would sincerely harbor disdain and resentment for another culture. We must always stand up for our rights and the rights of others, lest they be stripped from us.

UCSC's college system resulted in a weird ghetto-ization even when I was there in the early 90s (ie, majority of black students were at one college, asian/pacific islanders at another, etc.) It was weird but it was kinda the result of their being individual colleges within UCSC that focused/centered around specific disciplines. and given the identity politics of the 90s, it was no real mystery as to why the majority of black students, say, would gravitate towards living at the college that housed the african-american studies dept.

There is a lot of OTM in what Whiney says, but I think the problem is that following through with that argument misses the "your actions have consequences" correctional measure that would teach these idiots that being racially offensive is not in and of itself funny.
also my cousin and her husband graduated in the late 80s so I would be shocked and amazed if the school hadn't changes since then; I was just noticing that UCLA didn't have an incident listed in that blog post more than anything else

MU incident was v. weird in light of getting this on Feb 11 from SLU:
Fellow Students,
I am compelled to communicate with you in regards to some issues that have occurred on our campus this year, particularly some very recent incidents.
Since the start of this academic year, multiple bias motivated incidents have been reported and at least one hate crime has occurred on our campus. SLU students were the victims, and their offenders were other members of our SLU community. In the most recent incident, a fellow student, while in their Village apartment, was disturbed, and after a verbal confrontation was threatened to be lynched. This was not a threat made by a member outside of our community; this was made by another student that we acknowledge as a member of our SLU community, who was subsequently arrested for his actions. In other incidents, less threatening but equally heinous actions have taken place. SLU students have dealt with the word “nigger” being written on their white boards in Griesedieck, they have been confronted with swastikas as they try to go about their daily routine, and various other discriminatory actions take place more than any one of us would like to admit.

not to play cap'n-save-a-UC-system but asians outnumber whites when you look at the entire undergrad system (and at UCLA & Berkely). kinda moved beyond solely a black white thing a long time ago obv. and yes, people of any race can have fucked up attitudes but the implication that UC is becoming whiter just ain't true, becoming less black is unfortunately, although i thought the dramatic drop after the new admissions thing came into law has improved somewhat.

well i think that having a 5% black population as opposed to a 30% black population means there is going to be a LOT less pushback against these ideas and "jokes" just on a day-to-day hanging-out-in-the-dorms level. so yeah the environments they come from are a problem, but its a problem that college has an opportunity to correct (and often does), but cant if there is a smaller population of underrepresented minorities

― ('_') (omar little), Thursday, 4 March 2010 20:10 (fifteen years ago)
UC undergrad requirements include 3 courses in arts and humanities, and 3 courses in social and behavioral sciences. i see no reason why at least one of those 6 courses can't be a mandatory course in contemporary race relations, with a focus on prejudice and discrimination. i don't think the (largely socioeconomically advantaged) freshmen classes' sense of entitlement, thoughts on what a "post-racial" society is supposed to imply, and attitudes regarding the mysterious phenomenon known as "reverse racism," etc., are properly challenged in a formal setting.
i think nakhchivan is otm about generation youtube shithead's lack of conscience and civility, and whiney's otm about their conflation of morality with the right to free speech. but because i'm sure the regents would never agree that "ethics" (for lack of a better word) is a appropriate/practical addition to a logic-based curriculum at a public university system like UC (or for that matter, a science and technology curriculum driven research instition like UCSD), they'd be better off tailoring one of their required humanities courses to actively encourage the kind of intelligent dialogue that these cotton ball/koala incidents demonstrate a need for.

i think tbh most white folks crack race jokes to each other in private and outta sight and it's all...well, i dunno about totally harmless, but it's this thing that's done. it's bullshit but it happens. i think what's creepier about shit like this is that it's a manifestation of people being just simply *outraged* that their manifest destiny of being about to crack racist jokes is being infringed upon, god forbid, so they're gonna take it to the next level and do shit to folks' faces.
they're not being "serious", not in the way that the KKK is "serious" (even though they're a joke too), but they're coming from a place where they don't know what it feels like to hear that shit. i've never heard an irish joke that offended me in the slightest and someone could call me a dumb mick and i'd think it was pretty funny because it's just so stupid and clumsy and my particular group isn't perpetually in the crosshairs anymore. takedowns are funny when you're not feeling like you're being taken down a little bit from all around all the time. i dunno. assholes all around imo.

i love that argument model:
cf person calls for banning of gay marriage (or whatever), those affected say it's intolerant and ask for the freedom to do what they would like, first person comes back with argument that by not being allowed to ban gay marriage or make others feel low, he or she is being persecuted and therefore those who are affected are actually the intolerant ones.

I'm willing to bet the hood was left by a black student. Anything to start a new pity party and to try to get more benefits while trying to stomp all over whites. And the noose? Honestly, where did the idea that only blacks have ever been hung come from? How is a noose racist? Are nooses supposed to have some magically ability to tell what a person's ethnic background is and kill them ONLY if they are black? Gotta love liberal 'logic'. Hey, maybe blacks could get more respect if they quit playing the race card all the time. I mean, if race shouldn't be an issue, why throw it in everyone's face?

Considered starting a thread on this recently, specifically after someone posted that they asked a guy to stop talking at a (Brian Wilson?) show and the guy said that he had waited 30 years for the show and it would ruin his evening not to be able to talk loudly through it, but also because that whole "people who believe in evolution should be more open-minded and admit that anything that is not the literal word of the Bible is false" thing is seeming way too prevalent lately and makes my brain itchy

sure, but i don't think the institutional pushback (for whom these lil campus subcultures ultimately speak, in the administration's eyes anyway) is content to just throw up their arms and concede that "jerks'll be jerks" when they have the opportunity and the power, and some might argue an obligation, to design and deploy an actual ~fix~ to the institutional racism that doesn't seem to be going away

― Anton Levain (jdchurchill), Friday, 5 March 2010 00:06 (fifteen years ago)
I don't know if this issue was discussed further upthread or not but I've noticed that too. What would be interesting to know is how much of the rhetoric is coming from real racial hatred and how much is naughty schoolboy humor just trying to get a rise out of everybody.
But it seems like just in the last few years you see all sorts of anti-black slurs and humor on the internet (in message boards, commments sections, etc.
― Cunga, Friday, 5 March 2010 00:36 (fifteen years ago)
It's not that I don't understand the distinction that's being made here -- race hatred vs. race "trolling" -- but there comes a point where being willing to do racial "trolling" requires a level of contempt for the people you're hurting that's pretty similar to every other kind of racism.
― oɔsıqɐu (nabisco), Friday, 5 March 2010 00:42 (fifteen years ago)
yeah that kind of race trolling is basically race hatred of another sort.

― ice cr?m, Friday, 5 March 2010 00:54 (fifteen years ago)
yeah, there's a distinction but if you're game for the troll it requires a level of meanness, or a certain lack of empathy.
Going along with the schoolboy sense of humor thing, some people are casually blasphemous because they have a serious dislike of religion, institutions, Christianity -- and then there are people who think they're being hilarious or edgy-funny if they draw an obscene picture with Jesus in it, just because it's offensive.

it's a commuter school w/ 23,000 undergrad students - it's impossible to make generalizations about a student body that's so large and spread around san diego. it doesn't have many activities on campus or a real college culture. it doesn't even have a widespread greek system really, so 'all ucsd students are like these racist fratboys' is silly on a lot of levels. when I think ucsd student I think 'asian bioengineer who studies a lot and doesn't have a social life'

Fraternity Gang Rape: Sex, Brotherhood, and Privilege on Campus
A classic. Fraternity Gang Rape is a fascinating analysis of how all-male groups such as fraternities or athletic teams may create a rape culture where behavior occurs that few individuals acting alone would perpetrate. The new introduction and afterword shed light on how this pernicious problem continues today, insightfully illuminating the complicity of society in the failure of accountability for acquaintance rape.”

Penn State Sorority Holds Mexican-Themed Party, Proves Once Again That Mexican-Themed Parties Are a Bad Idea
...Instead of, say, a toga party, or whatever it is kids in Greek life like, the sorority went with the old Mexican fiesta theme. All the members decided to wear ponchos, sombreros and mustaches, and two women held signs, one of which read "Will Mow Lawn for Weed + Beer" and the other "I Don't Cut Grass, I Smoke It." And now the fun costume party is officially a racist costume party....

xp to caek's infinitely more amusing response
"bop" is Oxford-ese for a college party or social event, usually organised by elected student reps and held in e.g. the college bar or common room. fancy dress themes are common bcz how else do distinguish your specially-organised night of going to the bar and drinking from what students do every other night anyway?
"Our experience is that such acts are not uncommon around the university; it is likely a product of the way students are taught to imagine other cultures - as foreign objects and topics for consumption."
I know this is prob totally obvious to many here but I hadn't seen it put quite like that before and it strikes some chords w/ my own middle-class whitey mcwhite childhood and education (though I am - ugh - nearly twice as old as a university fresher now)

The best part of these stories is going to the student newspaper's coverage where lots of future frat-party-lawyers give some truly brilliant arguments. I think they've really opened my eyes to my OWN hypocrisy!

Carrying on their proud legacy:
The fraternity had fewer than 400 members when the Civil War began. Of those, 369 went to war for the Confederate States and seven for the Union Army. Seventy-four members of the fraternity lost their lives in the war.
While many Sigma Alpha Epsilon Chapters today claim that Noble Leslie DeVotie was the first person to die in the Civil War, this is in dispute. DeVotie lost his footing while boarding a steamer at Fort Morgan, Alabama, on February 12, 1861, hit his head and drowned. His body washed ashore three days later. Because Alabama had already seceded from the Union in January of that year, DeVotie is viewed by many to be the first casualty of the war. He is recognized as such by the state of Alabama.

What I'd be interested in knowing is how long that chant has been floating around the fraternity anyway. It hardly seems like something these guys just spontaneously made up. Or maybe I'm just reading too much into a frat that is very proud of reminding folks (especially on their website) that they were founded in the "deep South".
Some nuggets from the "About" section:
Of all existing national social fraternities today, Sigma Alpha Epsilon is the only national fraternity founded in the antebellum South.
The fraternity had fewer than 400 members when the Civil War began. Of those, 369 went to war for the Confederate States and seven for the Union Army

Funniest bit:
“At this point, all I can do is be thoughtful and prayerful about my next steps, but I am also concerned about the fraternity friends still on campus. Apparently, they are feeling unsafe and some have been harassed by others."

It's racist as it is, but
A fellow UO professor, who declined to be identified, said the offending professor meant her costume to depict “Black Man in a White Coat: A Doctor’s Reflections on Race and Medicine,” a recent autobiography by Dr. Damon Tweedy that recounts the racism he encountered in medical school.
