So I'm back in London from March 4th to March 10th

FAP, then? Or two or three or maybe just the entire week...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 29 January 2007 05:05 (eighteen years ago)

GO TO TAYYAB, A PAKISTANI RESTAURANT IN THE EAST END (???).

IT WILL BLOW YR MIND

mothers against celibacy (skowly), Monday, 29 January 2007 05:58 (eighteen years ago)

Well that's one night taken care of.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 29 January 2007 05:59 (eighteen years ago)

Is this part of a more extensive euro tour?

StanM (StanM), Monday, 29 January 2007 06:03 (eighteen years ago)

So you're talking about this place, polarbear?

Is this part of a more extensive euro tour?

Regrettably not -- this is a semi-spur of the moment trip suggested by my friend Hina in SF. I had planned on a European trip later this summer but with other trips on the boil later in the year, including one out to the Deep South for the first time ever, really, this quick jaunt is going to be it for this year.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 29 January 2007 06:04 (eighteen years ago)

that's the one!

byob, obv, cuz the place is muslim. and so, so, so good. best meal i had while in england, hands down.

mothers against celibacy (skowly), Monday, 29 January 2007 06:07 (eighteen years ago)

where in deep south?

Storefront Church (688), Monday, 29 January 2007 08:30 (eighteen years ago)

Guatamala

Ed (dali), Monday, 29 January 2007 08:34 (eighteen years ago)

This Polarbear dude speaks the truth about Tayyabs, about 14 of us went there for a big pre-Christmas feast and its fantastic.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 29 January 2007 09:07 (eighteen years ago)

Obviously you need to go and see NED'S ATOMIC DUSTBIN (with added Carter USM), Islington Academy, March 4th. IT WAS WRITTEN IN THE STARS.

NickB (NickB), Monday, 29 January 2007 09:17 (eighteen years ago)

You sure you're not mixing up NED'S ATOMIC DUSTBIN with ELTON JOHN FEATURING LEANNE RIMES?

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 29 January 2007 09:26 (eighteen years ago)

Oh sweet Jesus.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 29 January 2007 09:26 (eighteen years ago)

(how's Ned going to get that atmic dustbin on the flight with him?)

NickB (NickB), Monday, 29 January 2007 09:28 (eighteen years ago)

With the aid of his WONDER STUFF!

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 29 January 2007 09:32 (eighteen years ago)

I very much want to attend a NedFAP. For me Tues/Wed/Thursday look OK at the moment. My vote would be for old skool beer FAP somewhere central, not some fannydangle involving food or somesuch. But that's just my tuppence worth....

Dr. C (Dr. C), Monday, 29 January 2007 09:52 (eighteen years ago)

NEW SCHOOL KEBABS IN WALWORTH ROAD BABY!

Tim Westwood pp MC (nostudium), Monday, 29 January 2007 10:04 (eighteen years ago)

Oh no it was NEW SCHOOL BAGELS IN WALWORTH ROAD erm BABY

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 29 January 2007 10:05 (eighteen years ago)

Drinks, eats, all kind of fannydangle

Ed (dali), Monday, 29 January 2007 10:05 (eighteen years ago)

That's enough fannydangling.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 29 January 2007 10:13 (eighteen years ago)

this sounds good! you're one day late to see nurse with wound, though.

toby (tsg20), Monday, 29 January 2007 11:06 (eighteen years ago)

Who's coming to the Neds/Carter etc gig with me, then?

=== temporary username === (Mark C), Monday, 29 January 2007 11:26 (eighteen years ago)

Gary Crowley?

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 29 January 2007 11:31 (eighteen years ago)

oh if only I were not away that w/end i would be there.

ledge (ledge), Monday, 29 January 2007 11:41 (eighteen years ago)

CarsmileSteve, surely?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 29 January 2007 11:44 (eighteen years ago)

Me, for a start. I don't remember much of the Neds but someone put 'I've Never Been To Me' on a mix CD quite recently, and my mind = blown.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 29 January 2007 11:49 (eighteen years ago)

"Who's coming to the Neds/Carter etc gig with me, then?"

!?

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Monday, 29 January 2007 11:51 (eighteen years ago)

NED'S ATOMIC DUSTBIN (with added Carter USM), Islington Academy, March 4th

who wrote that billing - get it the right way around

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Monday, 29 January 2007 11:52 (eighteen years ago)

Sorry I forgot the order of precedence of the gods of fraggle.

NickB (NickB), Monday, 29 January 2007 11:58 (eighteen years ago)

bowling then?

ken c (ken c), Monday, 29 January 2007 11:59 (eighteen years ago)

Alas the 36 LANE BOWLING ALLEY in Streatham Hill with added McCLUSKI'S BAR is no longer open for business.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 29 January 2007 12:08 (eighteen years ago)

ice skating?

emsk ( emsk), Monday, 29 January 2007 13:45 (eighteen years ago)

Their California blood will freeze and they will be extinct like the dinosaurs.

Ed (dali), Monday, 29 January 2007 13:47 (eighteen years ago)

neh, they can each borrow a scarf from me.

emsk ( emsk), Monday, 29 January 2007 14:02 (eighteen years ago)

where in deep south?

Georgia for the first time ever, along with South Carolina, where my aunt and uncle live but where I haven't been back to for almost a quarter-century. Would also like to spend some time in Texas properly, having only ever been there to transfer between planes.

This Polarbear dude speaks the truth about Tayyabs, about 14 of us went there for a big pre-Christmas feast and its fantastic.

Good, good...

Obviously you need to go and see NED'S ATOMIC DUSTBIN (with added Carter USM), Islington Academy, March 4th.

Flight arrives at 8:30 pm that night; combine that with the jet lag and I suspect my enjoyment factor might be low. (I admit I would like to see the show -- and to break out my old "I know the way of Ned" shirt; also, Andrew will be there and since we're staying with him there's something about the idea of meeting there that makes me happy!)

I very much want to attend a NedFAP. For me Tues/Wed/Thursday look OK at the moment. My vote would be for old skool beer FAP somewhere central, not some fannydangle involving food or somesuch.

Sounds good, more on this in a sec.

this sounds good! you're one day late to see nurse with wound, though.

Cripes, I'm missing all sorts of shows!

I don't remember much of the Neds but someone put 'I've Never Been To Me' on a mix CD quite recently, and my mind = blown.

Believe me, that was a one-off.

Their California blood will freeze and they will be extinct like the dinosaurs.

Do not want. :-(

Anyway -- some general thoughts: the Monday and Wednesday are already out since Hina and I'll be seeing one B. Anderson's solo shows and pondering duly. This said I'm more than happy to meet up for early dinner/drinks somewhere beforehand if there's demand. So for the remaining three nights:

Tuesday -- a Dr. C friendly FAP is surely the way to go here. Drink/wassail/etc. There's a slew of folks on a UK music journalist list I've been meaning to meet up with as well so I might suggest a combined FAP with them depending.

Thursday -- if Ed's up for it, he suggested some evening of cookery while I was there. Maybe a potluck thing or the like? If he's willing to host, that is!

Friday -- end of week/end of trip merriment into the wee hours. Maybe Tayyab can be that night followed by whatever pub crawl seems best, but whatever.

There's a slew of non-ILX folks I'm hoping to see as well at some combination of these things. And pretty much I'm open to any suggestions for things to do in the daytime -- lunches somewhere are always an option! If there's any specific exhibitions or the like going on do let me know; I was thinking of using the week to catch up on seeing a lot of things I've either not been to for years (Tate Modern, for instance) or never gotten around to yet in previous visits. Pretty much I'll play a lot of this by ear!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 29 January 2007 15:41 (eighteen years ago)

Thursday -- if Ed's up for it, he suggested some evening of cookery while I was there.

How do you feel about slug?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 29 January 2007 15:44 (eighteen years ago)

Roasted or braised? (Having had escargot the other night, I suppose it depends on the garlic butter...)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 29 January 2007 15:50 (eighteen years ago)

(Shouldn't there be a "Ned" somewhere in the thread title, btw?)

StanM (StanM), Monday, 29 January 2007 17:15 (eighteen years ago)

i know! such arrogance!

vita susicivus (blueski), Monday, 29 January 2007 17:16 (eighteen years ago)

Thursday would be good I think I am going to Köln on the friday.

Ed (dali), Monday, 29 January 2007 17:16 (eighteen years ago)

I followed Pete's lead with his NYC trip thread title.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 29 January 2007 17:17 (eighteen years ago)

Also, a potluck sounds like a good idea, raise your hands if interested.

Ed (dali), Monday, 29 January 2007 17:17 (eighteen years ago)

Would be, but we're seeing NIN that evening, so I guess not. Hope to make some of the other fun, though...

toby (tsg20), Monday, 29 January 2007 21:01 (eighteen years ago)

(come to Austin, Ned, and show us pictures of your trip to England. We will repay in barbecue and serious texmex)

patita (patita), Monday, 29 January 2007 22:06 (eighteen years ago)

we're seeing NIN that evening

GUH. I take it this is already sold out to hell and back.

We will repay in barbecue and serious texmex

This is a fine idea.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 29 January 2007 22:31 (eighteen years ago)

it's not RLY carter supporting is it?

i'd seen Ned's were on, but wasn't overly botherd, BUT if it's carter as well...

HI NED, WE GO PUB, DRINK BEER, YES?

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Tuesday, 30 January 2007 15:15 (eighteen years ago)

Can I make a request that we don't go to an SS pub?

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 30 January 2007 15:17 (eighteen years ago)

oh i see, it's the memorial/benefit for Wiz, it all makes sense(less things) now.

i second ed's request

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Tuesday, 30 January 2007 15:17 (eighteen years ago)

HI NED, WE GO PUB, DRINK BEER, YES?

YES INDEED MY MANG.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 30 January 2007 15:22 (eighteen years ago)

All Bar One it is.

vita susicivus (blueski), Tuesday, 30 January 2007 15:22 (eighteen years ago)

Would the Market porter be too busy is we avoided thursday or friday?

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 30 January 2007 15:31 (eighteen years ago)

ned - I suspect nin is indeed sold out. however I think they're playing several shows at brixton academy that week, so you might get some on ebay for not much off face value, particularly nearer the time, or find people on forums with spares. it's definitely a v good venue to see them at.

toby (tsg20), Tuesday, 30 January 2007 15:33 (eighteen years ago)

Noted, noted. I will be looking into this.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 30 January 2007 15:35 (eighteen years ago)

Christ, March really isn't too far away now, is it?

g00blar (gooblar), Tuesday, 30 January 2007 15:37 (eighteen years ago)

Plan now!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 30 January 2007 15:38 (eighteen years ago)

I'll have to, especially if I'm gonna (as I'd like to) contribute culinarally (?) to this proposed pot-luck!

g00blar (gooblar), Tuesday, 30 January 2007 15:43 (eighteen years ago)

Who's coming to the Neds/Carter etc gig with me, then?

i will be there in spirit, but sadly not in body :(

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Tuesday, 30 January 2007 16:29 (eighteen years ago)

I'm tempted by Neds/Carter gig but is only 4 songs per band and is 20 quid and I'm broke :(

WLTM non-Dustbin Ned, maybe I'll make it out to FAP for a bit.

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Tuesday, 30 January 2007 16:34 (eighteen years ago)

WLTM non-Dustbin Ned, maybe I'll make it out to FAP for a bit.

As well you should! If you can.

4 songs per band and 20 pounds = er.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 30 January 2007 16:46 (eighteen years ago)

three weeks pass...
revive, let's talk potluck

Ed, Wednesday, 21 February 2007 20:22 (eighteen years ago)

Let's also not ignore B.L.A.M.!

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 21 February 2007 20:23 (eighteen years ago)

wouldn't dream of it

Ed, Wednesday, 21 February 2007 20:24 (eighteen years ago)

Wise.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 21 February 2007 20:25 (eighteen years ago)

Anyway, bumping to get B.L.A.M.'s attention.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 23 February 2007 16:37 (eighteen years ago)

Oh! Thursday for potluck thing. Argh, have just looked in my diary and my next doctor's appointment is for that Thursday. No idea if he's actually going to operate or just consult. If it's the latter, I'll be there, if the former, I may be too groggy and cut up and bloody.

Masonic Boom, Friday, 23 February 2007 16:46 (eighteen years ago)

Just like the meal. No, wait...

Ned Raggett, Friday, 23 February 2007 16:47 (eighteen years ago)

Potluck!

G00blar, Friday, 23 February 2007 17:58 (eighteen years ago)

I will not be around on Tuesday, but Friday I was hoping for an old skool FAP. IN A PUB! (Not a bar, not some yuppie food place, A PUB!)

Dr.C, Friday, 23 February 2007 18:13 (eighteen years ago)

Old skool FAP is the plan for Friday!

Ned Raggett, Friday, 23 February 2007 18:16 (eighteen years ago)

It all gets closer. (This reminds me I need to chat with B.L.A.M. about his plans for the week, assuming he can spare two seconds away from the bar exam grind.)

Ned Raggett, Monday, 26 February 2007 15:20 (eighteen years ago)

I wish I was in London again. I had such a nice time last time.

accentmonkey, Monday, 26 February 2007 15:55 (eighteen years ago)

I'm confused. What is Tayyab?

Masonic Boom, Monday, 26 February 2007 15:56 (eighteen years ago)

Tayyab is a bangladeshi restaurant/kebab house behind the big mosque in whitechapel. It is rather good and reasonably priced. Quite meaty though.

Ed, Monday, 26 February 2007 15:58 (eighteen years ago)

Who wants to come to this potluck then?

Ed, Monday, 26 February 2007 15:58 (eighteen years ago)

No, meaty things not for me.

I really don't know - I'd like to bring curry to potluck, but I can't really say anything for sure until I've had the hand appointment. I wish I knew if they were just consulting or operating. I suspect the former or else they'd have told me not to eat or drink beforehand or something. Maybe I could make a curry earlier in the week? They keep for days.

Masonic Boom, Monday, 26 February 2007 16:00 (eighteen years ago)

i'm pretty sure it's a pakistani restaurant in the east end!

Tracer Hand, Monday, 26 February 2007 16:01 (eighteen years ago)

East or west pakistan?

Ed, Monday, 26 February 2007 16:02 (eighteen years ago)

My friend Hina is strictly veg so if Tayyab's not good for that something else would be better for a Monday dinner get-together.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 26 February 2007 16:04 (eighteen years ago)

It's a while since I've been so I'm not sure but my recollection is that it is meaty.

Ed, Monday, 26 February 2007 16:06 (eighteen years ago)

Tayyab is Pakistani, not Bangladeshi unless I'm mistaken.

Friday night pubbage will need to be well chosen - ie nowhere too small or likely to be rammed. I am devoid of inspiration for once (ie bored of most places).

Matt DC, Monday, 26 February 2007 16:12 (eighteen years ago)

Glasshouse Stores? The Lyceum is never rammed.

Dr.C, Monday, 26 February 2007 16:14 (eighteen years ago)

The GHS is SS which they don't want. The Lyceum was closed the last time I walked by it!

Masonic Boom, Monday, 26 February 2007 16:15 (eighteen years ago)

i sort of half-remember that when someone else was talking about tayyab they said there was good veg stuff.

emsk, Monday, 26 February 2007 16:25 (eighteen years ago)

The Lyceum has been open for months now, but it is Sam Smiths as well.

Matt DC, Monday, 26 February 2007 16:28 (eighteen years ago)

No, The Lyceum has been open for months! NEW DARTBOARD TOO!!

But it's SS, so I dunno. What about the Savoy Tup or the Hole In The Wall or the Salisbury (St.Martin's Lane). Or anywhere else central.

Dr.C, Monday, 26 February 2007 16:29 (eighteen years ago)

Huh. It was not open when I wanted to get poutine with my mum.

The problem is that anywhere central that is not SS is going to be horribly crowded or very expensive. Is The Cheese SS? Endless basements are good for absorbing crowds of people.

Masonic Boom, Monday, 26 February 2007 16:36 (eighteen years ago)

If you go more city than west end pub will empty out fairly early. I won't be there, but something in lawyer land would be suitable, I think.

Ed, Monday, 26 February 2007 17:04 (eighteen years ago)

The Cheese is SS, and invariably full of a) tourists and ii) wankers in suits and 3) wankers in rugby tops.

ledge, Monday, 26 February 2007 17:10 (eighteen years ago)

xpost that's why I suggested the Lyceum - it empties out at around 7.30 when the theatre-goers head off and the office types head home to Surrey.

Dr.C, Monday, 26 February 2007 17:17 (eighteen years ago)

no bowling?

ken c, Monday, 26 February 2007 17:32 (eighteen years ago)

You've been waiting two years for that, haven't you?

Ned Raggett, Monday, 26 February 2007 17:40 (eighteen years ago)

so we need somewhere else to go on monday for dinner too then, if not tayyab. there are tons of other curry houses around there that have plenty of veg stuff since tayyab's meaty (makes sense if it's pakistani rather then bangladeshi, most of the places around there are the latter i think) if we still want curry?

emsk, Monday, 26 February 2007 17:58 (eighteen years ago)

I'll be in touch later on this week re: my participation whilst I'm in London. I'm not quite sure what's going on while I'm there w/r/t my wife's work schedule or where we're staying (her company is moving her out of her REALLY nice hotel to what I'm sure will be a similarly nice, but less-expensive hotel...only I don't know where yet). I'll update as news comes in.

Hope to see you all soon, and wish me luck this week on the damn exam.

B.L.A.M., Monday, 26 February 2007 17:59 (eighteen years ago)

g'luck!

emsk, Monday, 26 February 2007 18:15 (eighteen years ago)

Good luck indeed! Will drop you a mail separately, B.L.A.M.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 26 February 2007 18:17 (eighteen years ago)

Sounds good, Ned.

B.L.A.M., Monday, 26 February 2007 18:53 (eighteen years ago)

It draws nearer. Have we got Monday dinner plans settled yet?

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 1 March 2007 18:30 (eighteen years ago)

Have we bollocks, we are unable to organise a piss up in a brewery.

Ed, Thursday, 1 March 2007 18:39 (eighteen years ago)

srsly, you kinda need to sort this soon, no? (I'll not be able to eat for soundchecking)

G00blar, Thursday, 1 March 2007 18:42 (eighteen years ago)

Indeed. Then let's keep it simple -- what's a veg friendly place somewhere that attendees can easily get to both the B. Anderson and G00blar gigs?

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 1 March 2007 18:42 (eighteen years ago)

check the Tayyab menu here. See if it suits. Otherwise, we could do Medcalf, on Exmouth Market, Kate has had good vegetarian there, one of my favourite restaurants. which may be better for you to get down to the ICA anyway, Busses 19 and 38. (although Tayyab is not bad either, tube to Westminster or 15 to Trafalgar square)

Ed, Thursday, 1 March 2007 18:44 (eighteen years ago)

which may be better for you to get down to the ICA anyway

Who, me? I thought Brett's show was at the Bush Hall or something similarly titled.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 1 March 2007 18:47 (eighteen years ago)

OK Exmouth Market, walk down to the 243. Tayyabs, still 15.

Ed, Thursday, 1 March 2007 18:49 (eighteen years ago)

Rock either way. Should we aim for 6?

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 1 March 2007 18:51 (eighteen years ago)

(I will run the Tayyab menu past Hina today/tonight to see what she says.)

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 1 March 2007 18:51 (eighteen years ago)

Tayyabs will be a better place to eat early.

Ed, Thursday, 1 March 2007 18:52 (eighteen years ago)

Although, Medcalf's kitchen does start at 6 (tayyab's at 5). Medcalf's is closer to people's workplaces though. Arrgh, maybe we should do a poll or something.

Ed, Thursday, 1 March 2007 18:56 (eighteen years ago)

Man, I wish I could see the Tayyabs menu on my browser, but Hina is probably stricter than I am, so cool with what she says.

Masonic Boom, Thursday, 1 March 2007 18:56 (eighteen years ago)

html version

Ed, Thursday, 1 March 2007 18:59 (eighteen years ago)

Oh dear,. It's kind of not a good indicator that Lahori Chickar Chana is listed under the vegetarian options. That makes me suspect it may be one of those "fish is a vegetable, right?" restaurants. :-(

Masonic Boom, Thursday, 1 March 2007 19:03 (eighteen years ago)

Has that got meat in?

Ed, Thursday, 1 March 2007 19:06 (eighteen years ago)

Duh, I am estupid, I read "chickar" as "chicken". That's how paranoid I am. I'd say I need new glasses, but I've just got new glasses! Never mind. I'm sure it's fine.

Masonic Boom, Thursday, 1 March 2007 19:08 (eighteen years ago)

Finally, I have to recommend the greatest "curry" restaurant I've ever eaten at: Tayyab's in Fieldgate Street, which is between Aldgate East and Whitechapel Tubes (400 yards from Brick Lane). It is Pakistani Punjabi and specialises in grilled meats and fish. A generous starter of beautiful, sizzling chiken tikka is 2.50 and a hot buttered nan is 60p! The menu is not extensive but does have a good vegetarian section (Saag Allo, Lahori Chickar Chana). You will not find Madras, Vindaloo, Dhansak but will enjoy Karahi Batera (Quails) and Karahi Small Prawn. The food is cheap (like Brick Lane used to be) and sensational. The restaurant is modern but unlicensed which help keeps the price down. I have eaten there until I am fit to burst and have never paid more than twelve quid a head. There is a daily special of which Monday's slow cooked leg of mutton (Nehari) is out of this world. I'm an addict now and visit twice a month. I haven't returned to Brick Lane since.

from

Rates the veggy selection.

Ed, Thursday, 1 March 2007 19:09 (eighteen years ago)

Personally I'd rather tayyabs, because I go to medcalf all the time but it is up to all the peeps.

Ed, Thursday, 1 March 2007 19:10 (eighteen years ago)

Tayyabs is fine for veggies, I've eaten there with Mr and Mrs Jerry The Nipper and both of them are vegetarians.

Matt DC, Thursday, 1 March 2007 19:26 (eighteen years ago)

medcalf is on the pricey side for me.

emsk, Thursday, 1 March 2007 19:46 (eighteen years ago)

Tayyabs is sounding much more handy all around! Okay, I'll still need to run it by Hina but let's plan for there. Set a time etc.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 1 March 2007 19:48 (eighteen years ago)

So over 100 messages and we are back at the originally mooted place! Haha, I love ILX.

Masonic Boom, Thursday, 1 March 2007 20:10 (eighteen years ago)

Was a standard FAP decided on for the Friday?

jel --, Thursday, 1 March 2007 20:20 (eighteen years ago)

yep standard fap friday. it sounds like it might be big tho. is there somewhere central we can hire an upstairs/downstairs/back/whatever room for free/cheap on a friday night?

emsk, Friday, 2 March 2007 00:39 (eighteen years ago)

Okay, Hina's good with Tayyab on Monday, roxor. 6 pm, or earlier? (Ze Brett show starts at 7:30 but of course there are 'special guests' etc.)

Ned Raggett, Friday, 2 March 2007 15:19 (eighteen years ago)

I'm going to have trouble getting there by 6 - any earlier and I'll be a no show. :-(

Masonic Boom, Friday, 2 March 2007 15:20 (eighteen years ago)

I should be able to get there by 7/8ish on Friday, depending on where we go

tissp, Friday, 2 March 2007 15:22 (eighteen years ago)

Any chance of FAPping nearish Kings X so I can hop a train to Ely at, say 9ish.

Ed, Friday, 2 March 2007 15:33 (eighteen years ago)

This would also help me and my traditionally disasterous journeys home

tissp, Friday, 2 March 2007 15:37 (eighteen years ago)

The Harrison on Harrison St?

Ed, Friday, 2 March 2007 15:38 (eighteen years ago)

I think I will be attending the Friday FAP! As long as it's not too out of the way. I can probably manage Kings X.

Colonel Poo, Friday, 2 March 2007 15:50 (eighteen years ago)

The first FAP I ever went to was up near KX - somewhere on Gray's Inn Road, a small place on the right as you walk north. What about the Yorkshire Grey further down on the left?

Dr.C, Friday, 2 March 2007 15:53 (eighteen years ago)

It'll be rammed with lawyers on friday.

Ed, Friday, 2 March 2007 15:56 (eighteen years ago)

Hott lawyers?

Dr.C, Friday, 2 March 2007 15:59 (eighteen years ago)

is it the calthorpe arms you were thinking about Dr C?

ken c, Friday, 2 March 2007 16:08 (eighteen years ago)

I dunno, maybe. It's a long time ago! If I could be arsed to search I'd probably find the answer. Who was there? Mark S, Anna, Tom, Ricky T - I dunno who else. It was a small FAP.

I say again....Hott lawyers?

Dr.C, Friday, 2 March 2007 16:11 (eighteen years ago)

I searched. It WAS the Calthorpe. The thread degenerated into a discussion of pubs v bars.

God, 2002.......time marches on.

Dr.C, Friday, 2 March 2007 16:19 (eighteen years ago)

HOTT lawyers? In the Calthorpe?

Dr.C, Friday, 2 March 2007 16:19 (eighteen years ago)

God, 2002.......time marches on.

And yet we're all still brilliant. I think.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 2 March 2007 16:21 (eighteen years ago)

It's weird to think of 2002 as five years ago. Blimey.

Masonic Boom, Friday, 2 March 2007 16:22 (eighteen years ago)

http://fancyapint.com/pubs/pub938.html

Ed, Friday, 2 March 2007 16:22 (eighteen years ago)

A lawyer can never be hott

Tom D., Friday, 2 March 2007 16:25 (eighteen years ago)

I shall asses business after work tonight.

Ed, Friday, 2 March 2007 16:26 (eighteen years ago)

Au contraire.

Dr.C, Friday, 2 March 2007 16:27 (eighteen years ago)

that was an x-post to Tom D!

Dr.C, Friday, 2 March 2007 16:27 (eighteen years ago)

Well OK, they can until you find out they're a lawyer

Tom D., Friday, 2 March 2007 16:28 (eighteen years ago)

lefty

Dr.C, Friday, 2 March 2007 16:28 (eighteen years ago)

i could definitely use a beer tonite.

^@^, Friday, 2 March 2007 16:28 (eighteen years ago)

6 is gonna be tricky for a lot of people monday, no? ah but we should keep it at 6 then if some people turn up at 6.30 it'll still be ok.

emsk, Friday, 2 March 2007 16:30 (eighteen years ago)

lefty

Thank you!

Tom D., Friday, 2 March 2007 16:31 (eighteen years ago)

I dislike lawyers for different reasons. Grrr. Fortunately that one's been sent back to Birmingham in disgrace so there is no chance of that.

Masonic Boom, Friday, 2 March 2007 16:37 (eighteen years ago)

Okay, wrapping up at home here; will try and be checking in briefly in both SF and maybe NYC on the way over but otherwise I'll post again when I'm there -- just tell me what's been worked out for Monday but I'll assume 6 pm at Tayyab's otherwise!

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 3 March 2007 15:26 (eighteen years ago)

(But having said that if 6:30 is better maybe we'll split the difference for 6:15. Anyway.)

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 3 March 2007 15:27 (eighteen years ago)

The Harrison and the Calthorpe are both good shouts for Friday - the Harrison will be big enough and clear enough for a largeish FAP. Calthorpe maybe a little less so especially earlier on but is a much nicer pub. Happy with either though.

Matt DC, Saturday, 3 March 2007 16:22 (eighteen years ago)

I walked by the harrison and calthorpe on friday and. It'll be possible to grab an area quite easily in the harisson, less so in the calthorpe.

Ed, Saturday, 3 March 2007 16:27 (eighteen years ago)

We had coconut frog last night.

Michael White, Sunday, 4 March 2007 18:11 (eighteen years ago)

I am here in London...let me know what the happenings are as the week progresses and I will take part as I can. Cheers and I look forward to meeting you all.

B.L.A.M., Sunday, 4 March 2007 22:09 (eighteen years ago)

Plan so far seems to be

Monday tayyab, 18:15 followed by Brett or G00blar, depending on preference
Thursday, potluck dinner at mine
Friday, FAP, the harrison, harrison st.

Ed, Sunday, 4 March 2007 22:57 (eighteen years ago)

Am here. Hi dere. Andrew rocks. More later. BLAM, contact me re: Tuesday

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 4 March 2007 23:26 (eighteen years ago)

*having slept for ten hours straight* Right, anyway. Do we have an exact count for tonight or whoever shows up first guesses how many will be there or...

Ned Raggett, Monday, 5 March 2007 11:05 (eighteen years ago)

Hi dere! I am coming tonight!

Masonic Boom, Monday, 5 March 2007 11:08 (eighteen years ago)

Yay rock etc!

Ned Raggett, Monday, 5 March 2007 11:10 (eighteen years ago)

should we book?

emsk, Monday, 5 March 2007 11:10 (eighteen years ago)

Harrison sounds like a good choice for Friday.

Dr.C, Monday, 5 March 2007 11:11 (eighteen years ago)

Booking would be handy, I'd guess. Right now it seems like we're at least six (Hina, me, Masonic, Emsk, Ed, Matt DC I think).

Ned Raggett, Monday, 5 March 2007 11:15 (eighteen years ago)

And BLAM and wife if they're up for it.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 5 March 2007 11:16 (eighteen years ago)

Andrew F. has confirmed he's in too.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 5 March 2007 11:21 (eighteen years ago)

OK, what's the actual address of this place? Nearest tube, etc?

Masonic Boom, Monday, 5 March 2007 16:33 (eighteen years ago)

A very good night out, hurrah for seeing everyone. BLAM, you'd best drop me a line or something here! (If Tuesday not good for museum, then maybe Thursday? Just let me know by tomorrow morning or so.)

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 00:17 (eighteen years ago)

Though at this point given the weather I think staying warm inside is the best of all possible worlds. At least until tonight.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 10:20 (eighteen years ago)

I tried not to think about Tayyab last night, but I didn't succeed.

G00blar, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 10:39 (eighteen years ago)

Understandably. That was quite good food.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 11:57 (eighteen years ago)

I'm going to say the predictable thing and say that yeah, although it was OK, it wasn't great or anything. This is the problem with going to restaurants that are renowned on account of their meat cookery. They often don't put the same kind of sensitivity into their veg dishes. It was good, but it wasn't "ohmigod, I'm never going back to Brick Lane!" or anything. And certainly was nowhere near as good as Chutneys or Rasa, let alone Kastoori (the god food).

Though I suddenly realised that I've been to Kastoori with Ned! A million years ago during the brief hell when I lived in Tooting!

Masonic Boom, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 12:00 (eighteen years ago)

And when you lived in Other Streatham!

Definitiely coming on Thursday, absent through dramas beyond my control. Could have used about twenty eeeny weeny lamb chops.

suzy, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 12:05 (eighteen years ago)

Twice, even!

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 12:05 (eighteen years ago)

No, I've only been to Kastoori with Ned once.

Ned may have been to Kastoori again, but I did not attend.

Masonic Boom, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 12:09 (eighteen years ago)

Hmmm. Surely once with Jane in 2001 and then again in 2005?

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 12:32 (eighteen years ago)

Kate didn't come to that one, we went bowling after.

Ed, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 12:33 (eighteen years ago)

Clarity.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 12:57 (eighteen years ago)

I went to the second Kastoori trip. Ned went bowling, in an alley which is now closed and boarded up without so much as a blue plaque to mark Ned's passage.

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 13:07 (eighteen years ago)

The bastards. No respect for history. But Ken C's form is forever immortalized:

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 13:13 (eighteen years ago)

It will be a Weatherspoons soon enough as they can't even sell the luxury condos they build in the converted cinema across the street.

Masonic Boom, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 13:14 (eighteen years ago)

oi oi ned. tix are tricky for tomorrow, they're gonna try though. might come through last-minute, are you on your regular email and/or can you mail me a number i can get you at? i got 2 for me for sunday yeeha!

emsk, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 13:17 (eighteen years ago)

i have just spent the last 2 hours cooking something which might all turn out rubbish in the end anyway. gah. serves me right for deciding i didn't need no instructions and would just use what was in the fridge. plus the kicka$% seeds obv.

emsk, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 23:31 (eighteen years ago)

Yay kickass seeds!

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 00:07 (eighteen years ago)

i think it turned out ok. it went a bit leaky but that might make it quite nice. it's a shame it has to sit around for 48 hours though. but i have a magic last-minute thing that may salvage any encroaching nastiness.

ed, you won't be at home tomorrow am around 9.30 will you? is gonna be a pain in the ass to transport and i'd prefer not to drag it to work on thursday am then up to yours afterwards, but if i leave it at home and come get it after work thursday i won't make it to yours til 8.30 (ok only as opposed to 7.30). actually maybe that's fine.

emsk, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 00:15 (eighteen years ago)

Something'll work out. Now Ed, post yer address details or something so we know where to go.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 8 March 2007 00:00 (eighteen years ago)

Never mind, that's been addressed. Anyway, has anyone heard from BLAM at all? I guess he just got caught up in other things!

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 8 March 2007 11:56 (eighteen years ago)

Sorry, Emsk, I didn't see that.

Ed, Thursday, 8 March 2007 11:57 (eighteen years ago)

nah it's cool, have decided bad idea to transport by bike as will definitely drop and explode it everywhere. am going to go home, bring it to yours on bus therefore will be late - home by 8, at yours by 9? pls to save a bit of everything.

emsk, Thursday, 8 March 2007 13:38 (eighteen years ago)

Will, do if I have fallen asleep, pls to not poke me and continue the party.

Ed, Thursday, 8 March 2007 13:38 (eighteen years ago)

hey, uhmm, sorry, think I'll be a no-show at the FAP tomorrow, have cold and feel grotty. Ick. Sorry to miss you again Ned.

jel --, Thursday, 8 March 2007 18:02 (eighteen years ago)

I am just getting over a touch of the stomach flu, and am probably a no-show for tomorrow. Sorry to miss out on all the fun, but it was a lot less fun where I was. Ugh.

B.L.A.M., Thursday, 8 March 2007 19:59 (eighteen years ago)

Aw BLAM! Sorry to hear that. :-( You've been much missed. We will toast you tomorrow -- get well for the trip back!

Ned Raggett, Friday, 9 March 2007 01:34 (eighteen years ago)

Get well soon BLAM.
Thank-you for not poking.

Ed, Friday, 9 March 2007 07:58 (eighteen years ago)

I have only just seen this thread.

Is Ned around?

Is there anything on tonight?

More suitably, is there anything on at about four o'clock this afternoon, when I knock off?

Neddy?

I see upthread it is The Harrison, Harrison Street.

I have no idea where this is, and will probably have to go home early anyway.

Poor planning by me. I have been distracted, I took my eye off the ball.

I have never met Ned.

PJ Miller, Friday, 9 March 2007 10:11 (eighteen years ago)

What? He's still alive after five days on British food? A miracle! Sainthood now!

StanM, Friday, 9 March 2007 10:50 (eighteen years ago)

.. you should see his teeth tho

Tom D., Friday, 9 March 2007 10:50 (eighteen years ago)

I think I have been to The Harrison.

What are you saying about my cooking

Although the tagine did have some of you country's fine Geuze Boon in it.

Ed, Friday, 9 March 2007 10:53 (eighteen years ago)

*hic*

A slightly strange picture of me but hey.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 9 March 2007 11:09 (eighteen years ago)

And yes, food was fantastic and everyone did a great job.

Also I now understand the ways of THE MIGHTY BOOSH.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 9 March 2007 11:16 (eighteen years ago)

I have drunk beer in the Harrison in the company of PJ Miller, so yes.

Matt DC, Friday, 9 March 2007 11:17 (eighteen years ago)

(I was merely kidding, don't worry!)

StanM, Friday, 9 March 2007 11:22 (eighteen years ago)

PIIIIIIEEEE!!! Good lord, what an unflattering angle on that photo of me. I really do look like I ate all the pie single-handedly.

Num num, it was worth it, though. And I love the way the yellow of my curry looks against the purple and green paisley pot.

Masonic Boom, Friday, 9 March 2007 11:23 (eighteen years ago)

I know where it is, now, The Harrison.

PJ Miller, Friday, 9 March 2007 11:31 (eighteen years ago)

Okay all -- about out of here to Gatwick. Just wanted to say THANKS! to everyone again for being such great hosts, dinner guests, FAP attendees etc., especially the good Mr. Andrew F., who put up with us for a week. Hina had a grand time and sends her best to you all, and I hope to see you all again sometime soon. Talk to you later!

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 10 March 2007 10:09 (eighteen years ago)
