But you don't have to travel back in time to "do" Kate Bush OR Debbie Harry!
I don't think I understand the question. Are we traveling back in time to "do" the younger version of the celebrity? If so, I don't approve of this time travelling.
However, if we are travelling back in time to have lots of sex with REALLLY old celebrities, or even dead ones, then I would do....all of the Cartwrights from Bonanza. And probably the entire cast of Big Valley as well.

that montgomery clift photo !!!!

Lamp, Sunday, 10 January 2010 03:03 (sixteen years ago)

one of the most offputting things about the otherwise generally excellent 'red river' was that montgomery clift was WAY too much of a pretty-boy to resemble an authentic tough-guy cowboy

Electric Universe (wherever that is) (acoleuthic), Sunday, 10 January 2010 03:06 (sixteen years ago)

if film and tv and taught me anything - and theyve taught me everything - its that tough-guy cowboys are invariably good-looking

Lamp, Sunday, 10 January 2010 03:08 (sixteen years ago)

but usually ruggedly good looking - clift looked like he'd been plucked from some chaise-longue mid-fashion-shoot

his acting wasn't bad, i guess

A picked up a collection of 60s Playboys earlier this year, and--despite how obvious the airbrushing in them looks today--I must admit how refreshing it was to see centerfolds w/tanlines, real boobs of various shapes & sizes etc. Lots of time machine fodder in those pages.

I just finished rewatching The Shining. I can't think of another performance like Duvall's where I think she's kind of awful in the first half, and then in the second half gives the most harrowing, authentic, often even moving portrayal of fear I've ever seen.

One of the advantages of being over 100 is that everybody is young in comparison. So I don't need a time machine, thank you very much. My favourite bulge-boggling celebrities, even when they're over the hill, are still fifty years younger than me.

What I won't stomach, though, is blubber. Nothing is guaranteed to turn my ardent fuck more quickly into an arid FAQ. Take Morrissey. How on earth can anyone become that lardy on a vegetarian diet? There's only one possible answer: buttered parsnips. All right, margarined parsnips in his case, so that the beautiful butter need not die.

But can you imagine approaching those celebrated lips, source of a million waspish stings, with a rose - in order to reproduce, for a frisky private photo session, those famous Life magazine photographs of Mishima in a loincloth - only to catch an acrid whiff of margarined parsnip and understand exactly why those "mad, mad lovers must pause and draw the line"? Wouldn't you fear that a single thorn from your rose would pop him like a balloon? And where is that loincloth, anyway? Don't say it's ridden up between two flabby folds of vegan buttock?

And yet it's this elephantine yodeling lout - more cake than coke, more Fattenburg than Battenburg, more Debenhams than debonair - who poses, starkers as the stork brought him, on his album sleeves, his cock in a sock. There's clearly much meat in humble pie, but I wouldn't poke that navvy with a jester cane.

I AM NOT OK WITH THIS!!!

How can I be having these kinds of feelings for Ralf "King Dork" Hütter?

The Hauntology of Celebrity (Branwell with an N), Thursday, 6 August 2015 17:37 (ten years ago)

as far as i can see, nothing wrong with that, at all
ralf is totally begehrenswert

drash, Friday, 7 August 2015 03:43 (ten years ago)

Hi drash, I don't think we know each other?

It's BAD because my obsessions tend to be a little... intense. Herr Hütter is probably not a good person to focus these fixations on as he seems a rather intense artist himself.

The Hauntology of Celebrity (Branwell with an N), Friday, 7 August 2015 06:04 (ten years ago)

hi branwell, nice to meet you officially

i see. i sympathize. well, insofar as one has crush-taste for intense artists, this thread seems safe-ish place to indulge

As someone who considers themselves your friend, and has been on ILX with you for at least a decade, I have no idea what that gif means, so I'm not sure how the new guy is going to...?

Andrew Farrell, Friday, 7 August 2015 11:21 (ten years ago)

It is Florian engaging in super-repetitive behaviour, pushing the same button over and over again in a loop.

Look, I'm sorry. This was clearly a mistake, never mind.

The Hauntology of Celebrity (Branwell with an N), Friday, 7 August 2015 11:32 (ten years ago)

Also, I've never heard the word "adorkable" applied to a man, but there really is no other word for them. I've got in trouble before for jizzing this all over ILX (warning: bigness) but I don't know if I want to have more of the sex with them or their massive piles of synthesisers here:

The Hauntology of Celebrity (Branwell with an N), Sunday, 9 August 2015 15:35 (ten years ago)

I have a hard time separating their music from their appearance. I prefer my Deutsche Elektronische Musik to be sleek and sexless and fluteless, so I expect the same of their fashion choices (this applies to everyone but Ralf, who looked pretty much the same at all phases of their career). to be fair I might feel differently if I had any interest in putting Kraftwerk in my [MOD EDIT].

I did some googling to figure out whether Tangerine Dream had ever undergone a Kraftwerk-style makeover, but they never really stopped being shaggy hippie dudes, and it suited them somehow:

this applies to everyone but Ralf

oops, meant to say Florian

stoomcursus rockisme (unregistered), Sunday, 9 August 2015 17:24 (ten years ago)

Well, Florian went from jaw-length hair and sideburns, to short hair, to no hair. So there's been some change. He's just so distinctive looking I think it's impossible for him to look like anyone else, no matter what styling he has.

But the thing is, I'm sorry, but... sexless? Fluteless, sure, I can understand how free jazz flute isn't to everyone's taste.

I have never understood why people called Kraftwerk's music sexless. OK, maybe the earlier experimental traffic cone stuff is a bit wibbly and rather sexless; Ananas Symphony isn't exactly a banger. But the *music* of the kind of classic period? Are you kidding me? It's dance music! It's incredibly sexy, even while it's austere and restrained - or perhaps that's why it's so sexy, because it's so repressed, it's practically dripping with sex. (And that's not even touching on the lyrical content - like, every hetero(ish) female Kraftwerk fan I've ever known has highlighted the same bits in Computer Love and The Robots - come on! "We are programmed just to do/Anything you want us to" like HELLO! - and so on.)

Sexless... if all that machine music on TEE isn't drop-dead sexy and if the romanticism of e.g. Neon Lights isn't drenched in emotion... well if that stuff isn't considered sexy, then quite frankly I'm not sure what sex is supposed to be.

Granted, this is not the best thread for this, perhaps I should just go and revive one of ILM's 8 billion Kraftwerk threads, but this has always confused me deeply.

The Hauntology of Celebrity (Branwell with an N), Sunday, 9 August 2015 17:50 (ten years ago)

Because I'm aware that not everyone wants to talk about Kraftwerk as much as I do right now, derailing to here:

Merdeyeux, Sunday, 9 August 2015 20:45 (ten years ago)

Merdeyeux, Sunday, 9 August 2015 20:46 (ten years ago)

Oh no my phone really does not get along with photobucket so I am going to have to wait until tomorrow to see the pretty prog boy

Merdeyeux, I know exactly which poster you mean without having to click on the link, and all I can say to you is: that poster does not, to me, signify "sexy" but as the owner of a... Y'Know it signifies "OUCH OUCH OUCH THAT DOES NOT GO IN THERE!"

The Hauntology of Celebrity (Branwell with an N), Sunday, 9 August 2015 20:59 (ten years ago)

i am sure, the O_o factor is working on several levels

Merdeyeux, Sunday, 9 August 2015 21:04 (ten years ago)

I suppose the question of whether Kraftwerk's music is sexy or sexless comes down to one's attitudes about these topics:

Are androids sexy? YES!
Are machines sexy? YES!
Are trains sexy? YES!
Is technology sexy? YES!
Is physics sexy? YES!
Are fast cars and racing cycles sexy? Well I'd say no but British television programming seems to suggest otherwise.

Your mileage may vary.

quote by herman mankiewicz that i read years ago and always stayed with me for some reason:

Barbara Stanwyck is my favorite. My God, I could just sit and dream of being married to her, having a little cottage out in the hills, vines around the door. I'd come home from the office tired and weary, and I'd be met by Barbara, walking through the door holding an apple pie she had cooked herself. And wearing no drawers.

Just saw Thief Of Bagdad (1940), I really like John Justin's face (but his moustache is one of the amusingly jarring things in the film), didn't think I'd ever seen him before but he was in some Ken Russell films in smaller roles.

I thought there must be some fanfiction about him and Sabu, but to my surprise there are 49 pieces on ArchiveOfOurOwn and from skimming the tags and synopses most of them seem to be about Conrad Veidt and the princess, in sympathy with him! I guess some people found his desperation and passion charming?

clemenza, Sunday, 7 February 2021 05:54 (four years ago)

Not strictly speaking relevant to this thread, but my main memory of Réjeanne Padovani (the film) was that it had the ugliest costumes in any film ever (mid-70's Quebec politicians in garish polyester suits), utterly authentic to the time and place though.

Halfway there but for you, Sunday, 7 February 2021 17:40 (four years ago)

I would play on TV in the mid/late-70s (CFTO, I think), and I'd watch it just so I could see Celine Lomez. None of it made the least bit of sense to me (not that my knowledge of Quebec politics is any greater today than it was at 16). I only realized years later--it screened once at Lightbox--that it was one of Denys Arcand's first films.

Last year, I hung out in the ruins of Stevenson's villa in Bournemouth, where he wrote Jekyll & Hyde gripped by fevers and convulsions and nightmares. Bournemouth is this weird mix of extreme wealth and tawdry seaside cheapness; the town centre simmers with barely suppressed violence. But there's another aspect to it - of steep sandstone gullies and huge holm oaks that must be largely the same as when Stevenson was there. I was amazed at how many people were in the villa's grounds. I mean, it was me and two other people but that seems a lot for a minor(?) literary figure and a ruined old house. We were all kind of fevered ourselves: reading, pacing the floors of the old kitchen where he welcomed Henry James on cold winter evenings.

I saw the Shelley tomb as well. Weird day.

young kipling kinda hot. who knew? you always just see old man photos of him.

There is a Kipling story called "In the Same Boat" where a man and a woman (both clearly specified by the story to be super hot) are set up to meet each other because they share the same neuroses and weird obsessive behaviors, and they bond and help each other to recovery, and yet both of them immediately reject the idea of anything romantic between them; it's never explained why, but you get the sense that their connection runs so deep that any attraction between them would feel wrong - not incestuous, precisely, but a similar kind of instinctive taboo. This is how I feel about the idea of Kipling being hot. My whole soul rejects it, and I don't think this is a comment on his looks but rather on how deeply I identify with his writing.

I went through most of the vintage Bonds when they were all on Prime last year. A couple takeaways:

Carey Lowell in License To Kill is hella underrated: she's handy with a shotgun, can ably hold the reins in a getaway, and looks like a Nagal painting come to life.

Mia Hama and Akiko Wakabayashi from You Only Live Twice are two totally underappreciated smoke shows.

Chrissie Hynde interviewing Eno - http://music.hyperreal.org/artists/brian_eno/interviews/nmetxt.html

"DO YOU KNOW WHAT 'burning shame' is by the way? It's a pornographic term for a deviation involving candles.

"Ouch!"

"Very popular in Japanese pornography. They're always using lit candles because Japanese pornography is very sadistic, partly because of the Japanese view of women, which is a mixture of resentment and pure animal lust.

"In the traditional view, a woman is still expected to be at the beck and call of her husband, so that manifests itself in that kind of pornography. Of which I have a few examples, of course.

"Mexican pornography is an interesting island of thought because they seem to be heavily into excretory functions. The traditional American view is that anything issued from the body is dirty. It's incredibly puritanical and it resents bodily fluids, so if one is trying to debase a woman, you cover them with that and hence you get the fabulous term 'Golden Showers' - the term for pissing on someone, which some well- known rock musicians are said to be very involved in . .

"Here come the warm jets?"

"That's certainly a reference."

Request to film fans who have seen everything: are there any particularly good films with Meg Tilly, Kathleen Beller, Sondra Locke, Joanne Whalley or Olivia Hussey in them?

Meg Tilly: beyond her looks has something really impressive I can't explain. I think her break from acting was on her own terms but I just wonder what could have been. I've seen Masquerade (romantic thriller with a nice dreamy atmosphere), One Dark Night, Antibirth and Body Snatchers (not a huge role but she's intense).

Kathleen Beller: only found out about her a couple of years ago. I seen Sword & The Sorcerer recently. I know she's in dynasty but I'm reluctant. She's in The Godfather but I think it's a small role. She married Thomas Dolby!

Sondra Locke: don't think I've seen a full film with her.

Joanne Whalley: I've seen Willow and Scandal.

Olivia Hussey: I love Black Christmas

I seen Sean Baker say he wanted to get Laura Gemser acting again, I wish him luck.

Meg Tilly is quite fetching in The Big Chill.

Charlie Hair (C. Grisso/McCain), Tuesday, 3 December 2024 22:04 (one year ago)

I just watched Meg Tilly in the TV film In the Best Interest of the Child (1990) and thought she was the best I've ever seen her. The film is rough stuff though, it concerns child sexual abuse and has a strange unsatisfying conclusion. She nails it though. Also good in Psycho II and The Big Chill.

Kathleen Beller is super annoying on Dynasty and I believe her character Kirby is one of the most despised among fans. Maybe try Are You in House Alone? (1978) if you can stomach the subject matter.

Josefa, Tuesday, 3 December 2024 22:08 (one year ago)

The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter with a young Sondra Locke is essential viewing imho.

On the Sword & The Sorcerer bonus features Kathleen Beller said she wasn't much attached to most of the films she'd done, in that particular film she seemed happiest about being wrapped in a massive snake because she loves snakes. Annoyingly the interview had a webcam AI filter on it, so everything looked sort of wrong, I've seen this on a few webcam interviews, is this a default setting because I can't imagine they're doing this deliberately.
I watched some clips from Dynasty, doubt I could watch that for long.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Wednesday, 4 December 2024 18:05 (one year ago)

Robert Adam Gilmour, Thursday, 5 December 2024 01:27 (one year ago)

A couple of years ago I saw Lawrence of Arabia at the cinema, and it struck me that romantic tension between Lawrence and Sherif Ali was hilarious, because it was so blatant.

https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiJ01uA1I6JUgWxCdY76bA1FusBLyfOh_2QAwm5oVV0O4A5T7_vwSqoQ5WfG8V8zWN43SkMblD8_-v18CAOrGhQHlPoMkBX7bouT6xrAWszXFTBT00wuBXt3ZVG3aBuwyhNrk6ieO5EQFSh/s1600/cab2020-03-15-11h33m22s328.jpg

Omar Sharif's character wasn't a real person - he was a composite - so I remember wondering if the film was trying to suggest that Lawrence was in love with the idea of Arabia, or in love with the desert, or in love with something he couldn't ever have, or whatever. Rather than literally being in love with Omar Sharif. Or if the film was trying to portray Lawrence as a self-mythologiser using theatrical shorthand of the 1960s. But the romantic tension is palpable and I remember wishing I could travel back in time and give them permission to kiss.

And perhaps they did, who knows. I haven't read the book on which the film is based. It's a fascinating film that has aged in an interesting way.

Ashley Pomeroy, Thursday, 5 December 2024 19:28 (one year ago)

Well, the book the film is based on was Lawrence's own telling, and he wasn't exactly an unbiased source.

Biographers have noted that his relationships with boy servants may not have been strictly professional. He was said to have some sexual tension with Prince Feisal (played by Alec Guiness).

The movie lingers on the episode with Turkish officer, who probably raped him, and the suggestion is that the assault pushes his already-tightly-wound psyche into darker places.

All that said, O'Toole and Sharif were both pretty easy to look at, and wanting them to kiss is understandable.

Tales of them on set, however, are mostly about how they were annoyed at the lack of women cast members, and the production company had women flown in regularly to service the stars.
