What TV on DVD are you still waiting for?

TV DVD box sets are deadly - I'm struggling to find time to watch them all.

But even though there's such a lot of shows now out on DVD, they've really barely scratched the surface in terms of what's in the archive.

The following shows are all scheduled or rumoured to make their digital debuts sometime during 2007:

US - Alias Smith And Jones, Beauty And The Beast, Bosom Buddies, Boston Public, Cagney And Lacey, CHiPS, Designing Women, Falcon Crest, Family Ties, Flipper, Hawaii Five-O, Ironside, LA Law, Land Of The Giants, Mary Hartman Mary Hartman, Maude, McHale's Navy, One Day At A Time, Picket Fences, The Practice, Silver Spoons, The Streets Of San Francisco, Thirtysomething, The Untouchables, WKRP In Cincinnati.

UK - Artemis 81, Cardiac Arrest, Ghost Squad, Grafters, Harry Enfield's Television Programme, Monty Python's Flying Circus, Return Of The Saint, Shelley, Shine On Harvey Moon, Strangers, Victoria Wood - As Seen On TV, The XYY Man.

Monty Python's Flying Circus,

hasn't this been on dvd like 15 times already/

kyle (akmonday), Monday, 29 January 2007 20:10 (nineteen years ago)

are seasons 2 & 3 of arrested development available in the UK? I can't recall ever seeing them?

"The State" could finally get released.

Monty Python definitely out on DVD in the US.

Yeah, I know that you can get complete series sets of Monty Python in the States, but for some reason not in the UK.

Until now, us Brits are finally getting the whole series out this year.

"twin peaks season 2 already!!"

Currently scheduled (in the US) for April.

Ben Mott (Ben Mott), Monday, 29 January 2007 20:21 (nineteen years ago)

It's only been a 10 year wait...

Have they ever released the Twin Peaks pilot on DVD? I have season 1, but no pilot episode in that set. (I do have it on tape, though, so it's not that big of a deal.)

Sara R-C (Sara R-C), Monday, 29 January 2007 20:23 (nineteen years ago)

I know that at least Season 2 of Dr. Katz (with 13 episodes) is out.

No, the Twin Peaks pilot is still not on DVD.

Thanks Yellow Kid, that is what I thought. (I'm good as long as they keep making VCRs, I guess.)

Sara R-C (Sara R-C), Monday, 29 January 2007 20:29 (nineteen years ago)

My Dad wouldn't let me stop up to see the second half of Artemis 81, the git.

God Bows to Meth (noodle vague), Monday, 29 January 2007 20:30 (nineteen years ago)

the twin peaks pilot is widely available on DVD, it's not really "official" and it runs slightly fast so voices sound a bit highpitched, but you can buy it on Amazon and stuff. Also, it was included in the UK box set of season 1, officially.

Season 1 is OOP in the US now, just as season 2 is comin gout. WTF>

kyle (akmonday), Monday, 29 January 2007 20:32 (nineteen years ago)

the UK version + a cheap region-free player is cheaper than buying the OOP US ones, and then you get the pilot too

69 (plsmith), Monday, 29 January 2007 20:33 (nineteen years ago)

Thanks for great info - I will consider this!

Sara R-C (Sara R-C), Monday, 29 January 2007 20:35 (nineteen years ago)

i'm assuming seasons 1&2 will be out in some box later this year but then I assumed season 2 would have come out years ago and it didn't, so what do I know

kyle (akmonday), Monday, 29 January 2007 20:36 (nineteen years ago)

The correct answer is, of course, TMWRNJ. (although we all have our UKN0v4 dvds to tide us through)

Larry Sanders is the correct answer. Did they ever finish putting out Pete and Pete?

A B C (sparklecock), Monday, 29 January 2007 21:31 (nineteen years ago)

dunno...but a non-shitty version of the first season would be welcome.

Jessie the Monster (scarymonsterrr), Monday, 29 January 2007 21:32 (nineteen years ago)

Alias Smith And Jones, ..., Land Of The Giants, ...

You must be about my age, Ben. I love to see these again but I suspect my memories of them are much better than they actually were.

Also, David Steinberg's Music Scene, and the companion show The New People (both 45 minutes per episode, thay played back to back on ABC, I think). The New People was kind of a proto-L O S T, without the Dharma mumbo Jumbo (IOW, Lord of the Flies without the savagery). Steinberg's Canadian made show is on Rhino, and I have a sampler disk of 6 episodes, and it's unfortunately not that great.

WKRP In Cincinnati.

With original music, thanks

which reminds me, apparently the Northern Exposure dvds don't have the original music, and in fact have something really awful and bad and bland in its place. So getting those would be nice, because I miss that show.

kyle (akmonday), Monday, 29 January 2007 21:34 (nineteen years ago)

I've read in a couple different places it is. Allegedly the parts cut out weren't major. xpost

Jessie the Monster (scarymonsterrr), Monday, 29 January 2007 21:36 (nineteen years ago)

nabisco, TMWRNJ stands for This Morning With Richard Not Judy, a series by British comedians Lee & Herring which aired live on Sunday lunchtimes in 1998/1999 but has never been repeated despite being considered largely brilliant by several ILXors. i doubt it will ever make it to DVD myself.

vita susicivus (blueski), Monday, 29 January 2007 21:37 (nineteen years ago)

I've been trying to think of the title of The New People for years. Thanks, nick.

Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman would be good to, though I think I'd rather TVLand or somebody would just run them again. That's a lot of viewing time, I don't think I'd want to watch the whole thing.

More candidates:
He and She with Paula Prentiss and Richard Benjamin was a good show that I didn't discover until it was off the air, I think I've only seen one or two episodes.

Mel Brooks' When Things Were Rotten, a Robin Hood/Sherwood Forest setting for Brooks' usual stuff.

Love, American Style Best trash TV ever!

Did The Comic Strip ever come out in the US? Or even in the UK?

Series one is out, series two is supposed to be out in the US in a couple of months. I hope they don't forget to release it in the UK by the time the decent seasons come out though.

Cressida Breem (neruokruokruokne?), Monday, 29 January 2007 22:07 (nineteen years ago)

i still have the twin peakz t.v. movie and first season on vhs. i am old skool.

did anyone read that shandling article yesterday? about the larry sanders 4-disc set? which WON'T be complete seasons, but hand-picked "best-of" episodes and 8 hours of documentary footage of gary interviewing everyone who was ever on the show and apologizing for being such a jerk. weird stuff. i still would rather have it's garry shandling's show on dvd. he is a buddhist now apparently.

Well it doesn't seem to be mellowing him out all that much, really... yes, Gervais is a dick or whatever, but it's Shandling who came off as a maniac in that edition of the "Gervais Meets..." series. Seriously, he is so fucking uncomfortable to watch (and not in an awkward comedy way).

Looks like we'll never get full sets of The Larry Sanders Show, which is a right kick in the balls.

Neither TMWRNJ nor Fist of Fun will ever come out on DVD, the BBC don't want to release them, and I suspect Lee & Herring are past caring at this stage.

The UKN0V4-derived dvd of 'TV Offal' I have is great, but a nice full release of it and 'Inside Victor-Lewis Smith' would be good.

Am I the only one holding out for a Mary Whitehouse Experience DVD?

And Absolutely of course. Haven't seen that in years - though apparently it and individual episodes of The Adam & Joe show are available through 4 On Demand in the UK. Hmmm.

Rock Family Trees on Liverpool post-punk has a couple of minutes of my favourite telly ever in it. I think I still have it on VHS.

I keep dropping hints to various people at a certain production company about how maybe Abs0lut3ly should get a DVD release, but they're probably not the right people and I'm seriously flattering myself if I imagine my constant lobbying for A B1t of Fry & L4ur1e had anything to do with its subsequent release. But if you plant a seed, y'know...

The poor sales of the first two seasons of KayWhyTV*, for example, saw the third season pulled, so I'm sure they're reluctant to put anything out there that won't make its authoring costs back. Dr Wh0 boxsets, on the other hand - there's always an audience for those.

I suspect that there may be a problem with the music licensing which has prevented Rock Family Trees from being repeated. Which is a shame as it's one of those few music programmes which actually worked, Peel's narration helped considerably of course.

That article about Shandling upthread is quite interesting but the "Mr This" and "Mr. That" starts to irritate after a while. Does the NYT always sound like that?

I'd also vote for LA Law. What's the hold-up there? With Hill Street Blues and NYPD Blue both out you'd think Bochco would want to complete his legacy (or somesuch).

this is another thing i found a dusty vhs of during recent excavations (the other two being 'fist of fun' and 'newman and baddiel in pieces' the latter of which either didn't age well or doesn't stand up to watching them all in one weekend). haven't rewatched it yet though.

speaking of peel, 'sounds of the suburbs' would be nice.

Koogy Bloogies (koogs), Tuesday, 30 January 2007 09:47 (nineteen years ago)

I'd like to see the rest of the Goodies on DVD, instead of the 8 episodes dribbled out so far. Come on, the BBC can't have taped over ALL of it.

Since I heard of it when mentioned on another thread here, I'd like to see Channel 5's Pefect Day trilogy. And the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th series of The Secret Life Of Us. Basically, any vaguely comic drama about insufferable cliques of 30-something friends.

Adam Faithless (Adam Faithless), Tuesday, 30 January 2007 12:03 (nineteen years ago)

The State, obviously. How long must we wait, MTV?

There are 5 eps on iTunes right now, but with all the zeitgeist-y music ('Cannonball,' etc.) replaced with awful canned rights-issue-less crap. Regardless, I was really shocked by how little of it held up for me. Laughed a handful of times - usually at things as basic as the praftfalls of 'Captain Monterey Jack,' or nostalgia at 'I'd dip my balls in it.' The sketches themselves were often excruciating... see: 'Doug.' I mean, I re-watched an old 'Mr. Show' immediately afterward ('The Story of the Story of the Story of Everest') and was HOWLING. Of course, the 'best sketch show' thread has been done several times before.

This is kind of becoming a theme for me with a lot of DVD reissues... stuff I remember WORSHIPPING as a kid I find pretty painful upon revisiting (see: 'Get a Life,' even a lot of 'Sledgehammer!,' which I could have sworn was the best show of all time).

'Larry Sanders' does not apply to this phenomenon, of course.

Also I'd like more of Dennis Potter's stuff to be available over here - especially Lipstick On Your Collar and Frozen Lazarus or whatever that last sci-fi one is called. Criminal that we can't get that shit in the US.

yeah i liked Garry Shandling Show at the time but even then it was just about 'amusing', not the best show ever. Hearing the theme song on one of those VHI 'I love the 80's' things recently was a joy though, maybe it was better than I remember but that never happens.

tremendoid (tremendoid), Tuesday, 30 January 2007 21:21 (nineteen years ago)

I remember catching reruns on it somewhere in the late 90s and still finding it funny - walking through the Christmas Tree Lot to get to the beach, chiding the audience not to steal change from the set while he was away, etc. The whole conceit of the studio audience and the THIS IS A FAKE SHOW" schtick has never really been done better, if ever again...?

mark 0 (mark 0), Thursday, 1 February 2007 23:48 (eighteen years ago)

did that even last an entire season? I wonder if something like that would survive today, given the WB's investment in black sitcoms (all of which are shittier and flimsier than Frank's Place)

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 1 February 2007 23:50 (eighteen years ago)

Not even a whole season — IMDB sez 15 episodes. I can't imagine it being on network TV today, plus it was probably too nuanced and non-edgy to be welcome on cable nowadays.

State haters = no sense of humor.

How can you compare The State to Mr Show? Mr Show was good, but nowhere near as brilliant as The State. And no one on The State was nearly as obnoxious as David Cross. Not even Michael Ian Black.

Just the unreleased season 3 (which is 4 episodes and some early sketches). Not their best stuff by any means.

But, I live in a college town and at the video store here someone made a DVD for season 1 & 2 with an original interface/menu. I got my friend to make a copy. Crescent FRESH! MTV will probably never release the real thing.

So apparently a legit (and v.expensive) complete series box was issued earlier this year (with all the original music!) by Time-Life/WB, and now Season 1 has just been issued separately for the low list price of about $23.

Wanted to reiterate this, as the the Waits one is airing again, but it's been cropped and/or stretched to 16:9 and it's been poorly upscaled as well. Really weird shit going on with the color now.
