Call in the National Guard.

That's Assemblyman Lou Manzo's proposal to help local law enforcement put the kibosh on gang activity in neighborhoods across the Garden State, including his hometown Jersey City.

Manzo directed the state Office of Legislative Services yesterday to draft a resolution to urge Gov. Jon Corzine to deploy the New Jersey National Guard, at the request of local governing bodies, to assist municipalities in combating violent criminal gang activity.

"In certain areas, even in Jersey City, gangs have taken over areas," Manzo said. "They (the National Guard) are going to come in with heavy infantry and they are going to take the scum off the streets and put them in jail cells where they belong.

"The idea here is to work in concert with the local police," Manzo added. "There would be training with local police."

But Jersey City's mayor and actual Guard members gave Manzo's idea their own gang sign: a resounding thumbs down.

"We are not a city under siege," Jersey City Mayor Jerramiah Healy said in a statement. "In fact, crime has dropped steadily here the last 18 months."

"We do not need a military presence," Healy added. "The governor, should a catastrophe or major disaster occur, already has the power to call in the National Guard. And I'm sure he'd do so if a crisis ever escalated beyond the grasp of local law enforcement."

Guards at the Jersey City Armory said Manzo's idea could backfire.

"Going into the streets with our M-16s (rifles), in full uniform, is only going to provoke gang members to step up and show what they got," said Spc. Leonel Colon. "I'd do it, but I'm just saying that's what would happen."

Kabili Tayari, president of Jersey City's NAACP branch, gave Manzo credit for taking the gang threat seriously.

"You cannot disagree with a call for public safety, and he's (Manzo's) respecting the local governing bodies," Tayari said. "I just don't think Guards are properly trained to respond to domestic violence."

Manzo dismissed comparisons with the role the National Guard played in the Newark riots 40 years ago. That was a "civil unrest" situation, he said.

"Here we're talking about taking the streets back from thugs, crooks and criminals," Manzo said.

Disagreed. Lots of these gang dudes can't hit the side of a barn. That's why you see a lot of innocent bystanders get hit in inner city gang gun battles. I think a 12 year old got hit in the crossfire yesterday in Brooklyn. Guard members do a significant amount of target training, and while they may not be ready for sniper duty, the gangs would be no match for them.

Corzine was a terrible governor, i voted for the third party guy, which was probably a waste of a vote. But I keep trying to tell myself a New Jersey Republican is not like a "real" Republican. I hope not anyway.

So tell me more about Sussex County. I suddenly have this bizarre urge to live there because
1) Sick of NYC (like Brooklyn but hate Manhattan and if I work in law I'd spend a lot of time in Manhattan)
2) Jersey legal market is easier to break into and lots of firms in NW jersey (Morristown, Florham Park, etc.)
3) Have a romantic image of a semi-rural county (have driven through it a lot for work)
4) Get the impression that there are some good schools there for when I have kids
5) Could have a relatively cheap but large house/apartment with space for both my music stuff and wife's art stuff

Sussex County is nice. Pretty rural, relatively speaking. Not a bad commute from Morristown or Florham Park, but Routes 80 and 46 can get pretty clogged up at rush hour. New Jersey public schools are pretty good the farther away from Newark you get. Finally, you are correct that the housing prices are much lower in Sussex than they are in Morris. However, its pretty boring, so dont expect an NYC-style social life.

Whoever came up with the idea for the Jersey Shore show should be shot.

its also pretty conservative (maybe the most conservative county in NJ?) so if thats a problem...

you'd better get a legal job in morristown or newark if you move to sussex county, b/c any nearby legal jobs would be small-firm stuff (like family law, real estate closings, probate work, etc.). you may want to do that kinda stuff, but if yer hellbent on anything vaguely BigLaw then you won't find any of that in sussex county.

and if you do want to work @ a small sussex firm, you might want to try to get a clerkship in Sussex County Superior Court (to establish yer cred w/ the judges and local counsel before going into private practice).

I grew up in Sussex. Bill Magill and max OTM about it being boooring and mostly conservative. It's definitely a nice area though--lots of parks and trails and what not like High Point and Sunrise Mountain ("mountain").

So guess what local family owned convenient/dairy store chain I just got a job at. They're making me cut my hair and shave my goatee (clean-shaven or moustaches ONLY) which strikes me as really bizarre and makes me worried that there are other weirdly hyperconservative things that I'm going to have to deal with. It's also minimum wage and they can fire me at will. This is all going to be really, really interesting.

So my job at lol H3r1+4g3's is not nearly as bad as I imagined it would be, but I'm way surprised at the amt of rednecky racist shit I've experienced in the past week. One guy from another store who was working a shift in ours was telling me that his bro was a neo-nazi and had an albino snake named Hitler. One irate (and sort of young, in her 30's!!) female customer was going off about the NJ Transit bus system and how that "big fucking n*gger bus driver" drove right past her on purpose, and then quicky followed it up with "sorry to say that word but you know that's how they all act". Dumbfounded.

I mean I only went to high school here for 2 years and then spent the better part of 5 years in New Brunswick so I never realized exactly how fucking wack south Jerz is but oh my god.

I work at the Hoboken one, but yeah, neat used vinyl usually makes its way in and isn't always priced as "knowingly" as Other Music might price it, when it does come in. There are now five (!) stores: Voorhees, Marlton, Turnersville, Hoboken, Northfield

Today I saw THREE Taz tattoos, one of them was a grim reaper! My co-worker also said that light cigarettes were for faggots, which sort of shocked me because it's been so long since I've had to interact with people that say shit like that. I had totally forgotten that people still do.

It's a change of pace 'cause my last job was at an upscale grocer in an extremely wealthy community and now I work at a convenient store with a largely working-class customer base, which is actually quite refreshing as I grew sick of the pretentious hoity-toity bullshit. Kind of strange to be thrown from people who will throw money away like it's nothing to people who throw "faggot" and "nigger" around like it's nothing.

I used to hit up the Tunes in New Brunswick a lot before it closed down. Made a fair share of trips to the hoboken one as well. I loved the fact that you could listen to anything you wanted. But this was pre-abundant-internet-music.

Literally the first thing I looked up in New Brunswick when I got to Rutgers (I think it was move-in day or the day after) was what record stores were in town. There were none, so I convinced my floormate who I had just met to take me to Vintage Vinyl.

Yeah sucks. I think there were two or when I got there (or maybe one at first and then Tunes opened). Actually there was a third - a weird little techno vinyl shop on easton, but I didn't really count that.
