BOSTON, Massachusetts (CNN) -- Electronic light boards featuring an adult-cartoon character triggered bomb scares around Boston on Wednesday, spurring authorities to close two bridges and a stretch of the Charles River before determining the devices were harmless.

Turner Broadcasting Co., the parent company of CNN, said the devices contained harmless magnetic lights aimed at promoting the Adult Swim network's late-night cartoon "Aqua Teen Hunger Force." Law enforcement sources said the devices displayed one of the Mooninites, outer-space delinquents who appear frequently on the show, greeting visitors with a raised middle finger.

"While the concern is lessened as a result of the investigation, I'd like to remind citizens to treat any suspicious devices with care and to call 911 if any such device is found," Boston Police Commissioner Ed Davis said.

The devices had been placed as part of an "outdoor marketing campaign" in 10 cities, a Turner Broadcasting statement said.

"Parent company Turner Broadcasting is in contact with local and federal law enforcement on the exact locations of the billboards," the statement said. "We regret that they were mistakenly thought to pose any danger."

Turner said the devices had been in place for two to three weeks in Boston; New York; Los Angeles, California; Chicago, Illinois; Atlanta, Georgia; Seattle, Washington; Portland, Oregon; Austin, Texas; San Francisco, California; and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

A Turner Broadcasting source said the devices were a component of a third-party advertising campaign conducted by the New York advertising firm Interference Inc. That company had no comment on the incident.

The discovery of nine of the devices around metro Boston led state, local and federal authorities to close the Boston University and Longfellow Bridges, and block boat traffic from the Charles River to Boston Harbor.

In addition, the Pentagon said U.S. Northern Command was monitoring the situation from its headquarters in Colorado Springs, Colorado, but said none of its units were sent to assist.

Davis said police "are going to fully investigate this and get to the bottom of it."

The first suspicious device turned up Wednesday morning at the Sullivan Square commuter rail station, near the suburb of Somerville. Wednesday afternoon four other devices were reported -- near the Longfellow and Boston University bridges over the Charles, at New England Medical Center and near the intersection of Stuart and Columbus avenues in the city.

Three others turned up in other locations around Boston as well, Davis said.

this is my favorite notice so far. who says there's no more culture gap?

Fox News reports, "According to the Cartoon Network, the show is an animated comedy about three detectives in the shape of human-sized food products that live together in a rental house in New Jersey. Master Shake is the self-appointed team leader, while the 'reasonable' Frylock is a box of french-fried potatoes, and the Meatwad character is a round mound of meat.

this was all over NPR on the way home, complete with clips Mayor Menino decreeing dire consequences for those perpetuating this "hoax."

elmo argonaut (allocryptic), Thursday, 1 February 2007 00:20 (eighteen years ago)

I had an IM off a friend at 4:30 asking if I'd heard about the bomb scares then, not 10 mins. later, an official email from HR warning there might be servere delays due to the pending police investigation. My trip home was a breeze and was then able to read what really happened. So embarrassing! So great!

ENBB (expatrica), Thursday, 1 February 2007 00:20 (eighteen years ago)

i'm pretty sure at the time he made that statement, they didn't know it was a marketing campaign, just that the "devices" were not bombs.

"Scaring an entire region, tying up the T and major roadways, and forcing first responders to spend 12 hours chasing down trinkets instead of terrorists is marketing run amok," Markey, a Democrat, said in a written statement. "It would be hard to dream up a more appalling publicity stunt."

Yeah, putting up an ad that looks nothing like a bomb and then "forcing" emergency services to "respond" to them is much more appalling than death by water poisoning.

more on the culture gap, from another write-up:

"The cartoon also includes two trouble-making, 1980s-graphic-like characters called "mooninites," named Ignignokt and Err - who were pictured on the suspicious devices. They are known for making the obscene hand gesture depicted on the devices."

OK, see, there was this one video game? From the late 70s, in fact? Not that "graphic-like" makes any sense anyways, but ...

TV Network Takes Responsibility For 'Hoax Devices'

"Anytime you get a report of a suspicious device, it is always a concern," U.S. Coast Guard Capt. Scott Carr said. "We went ahead and shut down the waterways so we could clear the area and keep everybody safe."

"Our device was not an active device. We are still treating the area as a crime scene. There were no injuries. Everyone was evacuated properly, and everyone now back to their locations," Tufts New England Medical Center's Brooke Hynes said.

King Boy Pato (patog27), Thursday, 1 February 2007 04:30 (eighteen years ago)

A visibly angry Boston Mayor Thomas M. Menino said he would ask the Federal Communications Commission to yank TBS’s broadcasting license for what he called ‘‘an outrageous act to gain publicity for their product.’’

The officials said the campaign was especially reckless given Boston’s sensitivity to terrorism threats, after planes that left Logan Airport on Sept. 11, 2001, were hijacked and flown into the World Trade Center.

In a statement, Menino said: ‘‘It is outrageous, in a post-9/11 world, that a company would use this type of marketing scheme. I am prepared to take any and all legal action against Turner Broadcasting and its affiliates for any and all expenses incurred during the response to today’s incidents.’’

But others said they realized it was not dangerous.

April James, 32, said she saw one of the devices in a sandy area under the Longfellow Bridge about three weeks ago.

‘‘I kicked it first, then I picked it up,’’ said James, a hairdresser who says she walks and jogs over the bridge nearly everyday.

‘‘It looked like a bomb. I picked it up, pulled the tape off it, and there were batteries, two on the top and three on the bottom.’’

James said she was not frightened by the device, which she said she returned to its original spot, near the sidewalk in front of the bridge, before continuing with her walk.

‘‘I should have moved it, put it in a bin’’ James said, while looking down from the Longfellow Bridge in the area police had gathered to detonate the bomb just minutes earlier.

Bryan Richards, 34, said the prank was a tasteless joke.

‘‘This city’s too beautiful to blow up,’’ Richards said.

‘‘It’s not funny when someone threatens other people’s lives and when the police mobilize, I get upset.’’

They've also arrested the local guy who was hired by Turner's ad agency to put up the signs. Only in Boston.

Haha, spot the filler:

By Maria Cramer and Maria Sacchetti, Globe Staff

The man who sent city and State Police rushing to defuse what they believed were explosive devices around the Boston region was arrested tonight.

Attorney General Martha Coakley scheduled a 9 p.m. press conference to announce the arrrest of Peter Berdovsky, an Arlington artist.

On his personal website, he posted pictures of a small group installing the figures -- little square-shaped men frowning and making an obscene gesture -- on the exterior wall of a hospital, on the awning of a Cambridge bar, at an Urban Outfitters, and a bridge.

On another website, he describes himself as adroit at painting, animation, video and sound design, sculpting and installation art.

Berdvosky's lengthy resume boasts a 2005 bachelor's degree "completed with distinction" at the Massachusetts College of Arts, his second place finish at the 2004 Massachusetts College of Art All School Show, and a merit scholarship he received from MassArt in 2000.

On his website, he also lists several authors who have inspired him, including Douglas Adams and Leo Tolstoy, and included passages that moved him. One sentence from Tolstoy's "Confession" was underlined:

"It became clear to me that art is an ornamentation of life, something that lures us into life. But life had lost its charm for me so how was I to charm others?"

After countless nights of experimenting, Equality 7-2521 succeeds in harnessing the power of electricity to re-invent the electric light. It is light in a rudimentary form: A box of glass that glows when its wires are connected. This power can be harnessed to benefit society. But how is he to convince others of this great new boon?

He knows many will fear his discovery; worse, the authorities will be enraged at his transgression, at his daring to think and work alone. He believes the Scholars are the only ones who will understand and recognize the merit of his invention. When the World Council of Scholars convenes in his city, he will present to them, as his gift, the “glass box with the power of the sky.” The Scholars will explain the value of the invention to the Council of Vocations, and it will reassign Equality 7-2521 to the Home of the Scholars.

Peter “Borat” Berdovsky is officially a victim now. The poor newcomer to our shores, this wannabe political “refugee,” is being persecuted by The Man, made a fall guy by Big Animation for the moronic Ted Turner terror stunt.

He’s a refugee all right - from a Beavis and Butthead episode. This nerd is the full slacker package - Mass. College of Art, a goatee, stringy hair, a self-described “artist” with an avant-garde rock band. The only fact that’s out of place is that he actually has his own place, but then, his mother is still in Europe (a long commute) and we’ll add a few points back to his overall slacker score for the fact that he lives in a “loft.”

So they were out there this morning at the Charlestown District Court, Borat Berdovsky’s fellow “artists,” the synonym for which is “unemployed.” The artists were protesting his incarceration, and holding signs saying “Never Forget.”

Dude, that’s easy for you to say. Never forget? You haven’t had any of this weed, man. It’s, like, totally. Uh, I lost my train of thought.

That’s one of the things about this moronic cartoon show, Aqua Teen Hunger Force. It’s only 15 minutes long, but if you’ve done a couple of bones, man, it seems like an hour. The “artists” are saying that the cops and the reporters are hopelessly lame because they don’t get off on a show in which one of the main characters is named “Meatwad.”

Dude, we’ve got, like, jobs. And kids.

“Anyone under the age of 35,” said one of the protestors, who was somehow able to get a day off from work, “knew this was a joke the minute they saw it.”

Yeah, anyone under the age of 35 who still lives at home with Mom, wears a baseball cap backwards and is saving money for a new tattoo.

Borat Berdovsky is from Belorusa and now lives in Arlington, which was once a working-class town. But it has long since been now transformed by Cambridge potheads into another People’s Republic, represented in the legislature by the likes of Jim Marzilli. Needless to say, the Arlington moonbats are falling into line behind legal alien Borat.

Howie Carr, everybody!

govern yourself accordingly (dayan), Thursday, 1 February 2007 18:09 (eighteen years ago)

Some more details:

Surrounded by reporters, Berdovsky stroked his lengthy dreadlocks and delivered a discourse on haircut styles in the 1970s, Afros, and the Beatles' hair styles.

"We are only taking questions on hair," he said.

The men's lawyer, Michael L. Rich, stood awkwardly by their side.

"He's a performance artist," said Rich. "If you don't like what you are seeing here, why don't you leave them alone."

The two criminal defendents alternately smiled and made ironic grimaces. "I'm quite enjoying this," said Berdovsky.

After a few minutes, clearly frustrated reporters walked away and the two men left.

Also, I do appreciate this:

Judge Paul K. Leary seemed skeptical of the state's case, telling Grossman that the law requires that people must intend to create a panic to be charged with placing hoax devices. This case, the judge said, seemed to involve two men who relatives say were paid to place unorthodox advertisements throughout the city.

The question of intent was a legal issue for another hearing, Grossman said.

20-somethings raised on hip ads for Snapple

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Thursday, 1 February 2007 19:10 (eighteen years ago)

two more good'uns:

-Zach at ToonZone

The comments of Shepard Smith and his co-workers at News Corp provide a prime example of the media’s hand in this story. Many of the Fox News interviews were with citizens who were “distraught” over the Aqua Teen advertisements. Smith explained the plot of the show, portraying it as something appalling. Now I understand that the media has the right to their opinions on a show like Aqua Teen, but I think that Fox’s comments in particular only aggravated the situation. What most newscasters should have at least commented on is that this investigation was a result of pure paranoia.

-Thomas Menino is an incompetent coward:

Menino is going on TV and insisting he's going to send a 27-year old artist to jail for not breaking any law, because his police department overreacted and wasted a million dollars feeding a media frenzy and terrorizing the population of his own city. That's a cowardly act of self-preservation, and were he not threatening the life of an innocent young man it would be laughable.

Todd Vanderlin, a 22-year-old design student, had just left Lucky's lounge in South Boston two weeks ago when he spotted what looked like an alien glowing on the side of a bridge. He pulled out his digital camera, photographed the illuminated plastic figure, and posted the images on his blog.

"I knew it was art, and I knew it was part of the Adult Swim ads, because I saw a billboard for the same thing," said Vanderlin, referring to a series of cartoons on cable television. "I see it in New York all the time."

But yesterday, a subway worker less attuned to the latest in underground marketing techniques called the police after spotting one of the "Aqua Teen Hunger Force" cartoon characters on an overpass in Charlestown. The terrorism scare that followed touched off a massive response from police. When it was discovered that the electronic boards were only ads for a cartoon, serious condemnation flowed from Washington and Boston.

The episode exposed a wide generational gulf between government officials who reacted as if the ads might be bombs and 20-somethings raised on hip ads for Snapple, Apple, and Google who instantly recognized the images for what they were: a viral marketing campaign.

Among many in the young generation, reaction to the scare was smirking. "Repeat after me, authorities. L-E-D. Not I-E-D. Get it?" one 29-year-old blogger from Malden wrote on his website, contrasting light emitting diodes with improvised explosive devices.
Complete coverage of the bomb scare

Elected officials said there is no room for battery-powered contraptions on bridges and overpasses in a post Sept. 11 world.

"Scaring an entire region, tying up the T and major roadways, and forcing first responders to spend 12 hours chasing down trinkets instead of terrorists is marketing run amok," said US Representative Edward J. Markey, Democrat of Malden. "It would be hard to dream up a more appalling publicity stunt."

The ads were the latest incarnation of viral marketing, an advertising technique that is exploding in popularity as a way to reach younger consumers inured to the effects of traditional commercials. Like viruses, the ads are intended to spread on their own, creating word-of-mouth buzz by cropping up in unexpected places outdoors and on the Internet.

The company behind the ads for "Aqua Teen Hunger Force" was New York-based Interference Inc., whose chief executive officer, Sam Travis Ewen, was recently named one of Brandweek Magazine's Guerrilla Marketers of the Year. Ewen, who is in his 30s, has also put people on subways to brag about financial advisers and sent models into bars to sit with packs of cigarettes, waiting for someone to ask for a smoke.

Jamie Tedford -- senior vice president of media and marketing innovations at Arnold Worldwide, a Boston-based ad agency -- said there have been recent marketing campaigns that backfired. He cited Wal-Mart's decision to post a blog about a fictitious couple driving cross-country to different Wal-Mart stores. The company did not disclose that it had created the blog, angering some buyers.

But Tedford said he could not recall a recent marketing campaign involving objects that were mistaken for bombs or any campaign that had that caused a citywide panic.

"You'd almost have to go back to 'War of the Worlds,' " he said, referring to the famous 1938 radio broadcast by Orson Welles. "We would all agree that this has crossed a line."

Turner Broadcasting System Inc., which broadcasts "Aqua Teen Hunger Force" on its Cartoon Network, could have saved itself the controversy by warning local authorities this was a marketing campaign, Tedford said.

Boston was one of 10 cities around the nation where the guerilla ads appeared, but nowhere else did they cause security concerns and set a city on edge.

"The hardcore watchers of that show would know it's a character, but the majority of people in these cities do not know that," Tedford said. "Turner has failed on the disclosure issue."

Turner executives said they did not forewarn local authorities, because they never imagined the campaign would cause alarm. "It was not our intent to do anything but get attention for a television series, period," Phil Kent, chairman and chief executive of Turner, said in an interview last evening.

That was apparent to many young consumers. After Vanderlin posted the images on his blog, Ewen shot him an e-mail: "I am glad you got one of the adult swim signs; there are others out there as well so keep looking up," Ewen wrote. He added he hoped people would take them as souvenirs.

Vanderlin, a student at Parson School of Design in New York City, said he was stunned to see police bomb squads swoop in and remove the characters.

"It's so not threatening -- it's a Lite-Brite," he said, referring to a popular children's game. "I don't understand how they could be terrified. I would understand if it was a bunch of circuits blinking but it wasn't. . . . It was clearly a design."

Mac Daniel and Suzanne Smalley of the Globe staff contributed to this report.

CNN coverage

Coakley and Menino did not rule out the possibility of criminal charges, or a civil suit to recoup what they say is the hundreds of thousands of dollars the city spent to respond to the bomb scares.

Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority spokesman Joe Pesaturo said the legal department is sending Turner a letter asking the company to reimburse the city for all costs incurred during the hoax, but the authority had no plans to unilaterally file a lawsuit.

If I had a dollar for every time the DC Metro was temporarily shut down thanks to a "suspicious package" or "suspicious device," I would have about $25,000 right now. It's like once or twice a week, at least. And that's not even counting the inexplicable "OK it's just not going to work at all, and we're just going to tell you it's a delay and you should all deal with it" shut downs! Yet, I never see Geraldo Rivera reporting on it and hyping it. ;_;

UART variations (ex machina), Thursday, 1 February 2007 19:47 (eighteen years ago)

I understand what kevin is saying, but anything under a bridge or near a public building could be an explosive device. Obviously the city can't shut down every time somebody locates an electronic device or a box near a roadway. These guys clearly fucked up and there is no way the two douchebags should go to jail, or Turner should lose in court in a lawsuit by the city, if it comes to that.

Also, please note that the bomb squad and state police were handling the devices with bare or gloved hands and that in some of the videos they were removing them without checking them closely, so the experts didn't really seem to think these were bombs, at least not after the original was removed.

You all heard about the Turner Broadcasting promo for Aqua Teen Hunger force that went horribly wrong in Boston yesterday, prompting city-wide bomb scares and bringing roads and public transit to a standstill? Well, through the magic of the Internet you -- yes you -- can now own a piece of what will surely go down in the annals of PR as one of the worst gaffes ever, and a shining example of guerrilla marketing gone bad. One of the cartoonish, illuminated signs, which were placed throughout the city, is on auction at eBay. Current high bid: $5,000.

Terrorism hoaxes are common. Two years ago, a drug addict and smuggler gave a fake tip about a terrorist incursion in Boston that led to another massive mobilization of law enforcement. In 2005, an angry deportee used a fake threat that forced officials to close a tunnel under Baltimore's harbor. Turner officials say their devices were never meant to be seen as threats. Yet they find themselves in bad company.

specious bullshit.

Today's followup from the NYT

Ad executives said where Turner went wrong was failing to identify the boxes as advertising.

“Turner did not disclose that this was a corporate message,” said Jamie Tedford of Arnold Worldwide, which is part of Havas. “It never would have been confused with a bomb if it had been disclosed that this was a corporate initiative.”

Oh, you're just no fun anymore.

In an interview in Brandweek in November, Sam Ewen, the chief of Interference, was asked if he’d ever been arrested for a stunt. Mr. Ewen said, “Luckily I have avoided arrest, mainly by dropping fictitious names of police officers from other precincts in town.”

Before Tom Cruise's "Mission: Impossible III" exploded last May across movie screens, its promotional campaign bombed on Los Angeles newsstands.

That's the view of federal officials who say they intend to sue the Los Angeles Times and Paramount Pictures Corp. over the April 28 placement in news racks of digital devices that played the familiar "Mission: Impossible" theme song when the racks' doors were opened.

hearditonthexico (rogermexico), Friday, 2 February 2007 19:42 (eighteen years ago)

Several newspaper buyers thought the music players were bombs and reported them to law enforcement. The Los Angeles County sheriff's arson squad blew up one Times news rack near the intersection of Sand Canyon and Soledad Canyon roads in Santa Clarita as a precaution.

the only thing I can say is that Adult Swim is a part of Cartoon Network, and it's tricky to promote adult fare in what amounts to a kid environment.

Let's just say that certain people who may or may not be involved with certain governmental communications agencies might consider the middle finger to be inappropriate given the channel's context.

And what about the MPAA? This was also meant to advertise a movie right? That would be funny if the real repercussions from this had less to do with homeland security and more to do with appeasing the morons at the mpaa.

every politician in Mass was looking for a big head to serve on a plate at the Retard Ball. Even that useless fat fuck Teddy the K was making phone calls.

I'll put it to you this way: the guy didn't resign over the non-fake bomb. read my other post above and you can figger it out.

At this point I'm more curious as to why yu won't just say it.
Seems like all this beating around the bush is more work for everyone.
To be honest this makes me NOT want to look above.
Bit of a contrary reaction, but so is just NOT telling us.

From the Boston Herald article: “This event caused a lot of pain and suffering in Boston,” Menino said. “This should send a message that guerrilla marketing will not be tolerated here,” he said.

Everyone over 40 somehow thinks the signs did it(People that believe the news, I guess) and everyone under it blames Boston.

I guess they don't care about their futures in politics.
