Let's start with the icelandic hotdog, best served at 4am. Made of lamb and featuring crispy onions and mysterious sauce.

Comes from a place like this

I think a theme from this thread will be Bill clinton has eaten here. He's definitely been to the above stall. President and drunky food connoisseur.

Ed (dali), Monday, 5 February 2007 09:55 (eighteen years ago)

I don't know if Clinton has eaten here, but he should have. The now closed, but forever glorious in my mind, Fattouch. Home of MTL's best shish taouk.

while living in Dallas, back when I used to actually get drunk, we often went to Cucuqita's after the bars closed. Elsa Svitborg (tracerhand), Monday, 5 February 2007 19:41 (eighteen years ago)

shwarma or kebabs = essential drunk food

fish and chips = dud, usually because my benumbed tastebuds need a lot of vinegar on the chips, the next morning my mouth has the feeling that i just ate several lemons

the kwisatz bacharach (sanskrit), Monday, 5 February 2007 19:43 (eighteen years ago)

Good doner meat is actually pretty good, if still very greasy. The vast majority of kebab houses sell bad doner meat, though. It should taste of roast lamb, not dried-out dog food.

chap (chap), Monday, 5 February 2007 19:55 (eighteen years ago)

Doner meat is very very rarely lamb. It is almost universally male calf meat from the dairy industry.

Ed (dali), Monday, 5 February 2007 19:56 (eighteen years ago)

anyway, no one's mentioned doner kebabs?

Aldo mentioned kebab pizzas, which are like the greatest thing ever! (I was eulogising them on another thread recently)

One time after a gig in a semi-small town, the kind in which everything (except of course the loft the show was in) shuts down at 6 pm, me & a bandmate drunkenly raided a 24 hour grocery store, looking for whatever would get us the largest volume of food for the least money. We settled on a 3 lb bag of baby carrots, and ended up throwing at least twice as many at cars/up onto roofs of buildings/etc on the walk back to the venue as we ate.

I'm actually pretty amazed it took this long for onion rings to get mentioned, that's the other thing I always eat when I'm drunk. They're probably better than fries actually; The problem is that restaurants will give you like six small rings, in contrast to the pile of fries posted above (which is a "small" btw).

-Gravy fries with cheese (yes, I know this is poutine but we were on the NY side of the border)
-Deep fried mozarella sticks (please sir - this cheese isn't fattening enough. Could you please fry it?)
-Anything from Dennys. At 4 in the morning when drunk, Dennys food is the most delicious thing on earth. At any other time, it is revolting.

There's a great 24 hour fishfry chain in Louisville called Moby Dick's, I'm pretty sure there's nothing on the menu that wasn't deep fried. The selection is incredible - fried oysters, clams, cauliflower, mushrooms, some of the best onion rings you will ever eat. One of my dad's long-term goals has always been to open one here.

Fish Finger Sandwich

more like hangover food, i'd say. best with a mixture of mayo and sweet chili sauce.

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 6 February 2007 15:19 (eighteen years ago)

I have been told that the ubiquity of pork and ham in Spanish food stems from their utility, back in the days of the Inquisition, of handily proving that one was neither Jewish nor Muslim. I remember, somewhat hazily, that the summer that I spent in Horta on the outskirts of Barcelona, I would sometimes get a sandwich at a local restaurant that consisted of cheese, sliced pork roast and slices of ham and a freid egg on a toasted roll. Talk about a gut bomb.

a lot of people give la pasadita shit but god bless them. if i'm not out in wicker park it's good to know that pasadita is only 6 blocks from my place.

Jordan OTM. Ian's Pizza is excellent.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 6 February 2007 16:51 (eighteen years ago)

In Buffalo, my friend and I discovered that a gyro and feta omelet, served with homefries and toast, is the best drunk food that the city has to offer.

molly mummenschanz (mollyd), Tuesday, 6 February 2007 16:55 (eighteen years ago)

I made a falafel omelet this weekend, I wish I had it right now.

blotter Budweiser Hackeysadk (nickalicious), Tuesday, 6 February 2007 16:57 (eighteen years ago)

gyro and feta omelet

!

tuesdays with maury povich (get bent), Tuesday, 6 February 2007 18:35 (eighteen years ago)

It's not on any menu I know of, but just go to a Greek diner and ask them to make it for you. You will not be disappointed.

molly mummenschanz (mollyd), Tuesday, 6 February 2007 18:36 (eighteen years ago)

I just went out and had a gyro wrap with fries for lunch, in celebration of this thread. Sadly, I am not drunk though.

molly mummenschanz (mollyd), Tuesday, 6 February 2007 19:44 (eighteen years ago)

I don't favor gyros with fries in, in my experience that was only a Northern Greek thing and I like the Southern/Athenian version better, made with veg and yogurt and cukes. But I'm glad it made you happy, Molly-doll. You can be drunk in just a few hours.

Laurel (Laurel), Tuesday, 6 February 2007 19:50 (eighteen years ago)

Maybe you explain to me why some gyro is thick, and some is ultra-thin and dry. Is it a regional thing? The folks who owned the Greek restaurant that I used to work at were from Thessaloniki, and they had the lovely thick gyro.

The fries were on the side of this gyro wrap. This one had lots of cucumbers and lovely yogurt sauce. Now I'm suffering from an intense food coma.

Oh, I probably will be drunk in a few hours. It's the season finale of Campus Ladies, which is currently my favorite show.

molly mummenschanz (mollyd), Tuesday, 6 February 2007 19:54 (eighteen years ago)

I want a good kebab now. Sadly, most of the takeout houses round here are dreadul, so I usually just wait until I get home, it which point generally cheese on toast is the beer-soaker-upper of choice.

Matt (Matt), Tuesday, 6 February 2007 19:59 (eighteen years ago)

I had a good jewish schwama for lunch, sadly i was not drunk.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 6 February 2007 20:01 (eighteen years ago)

I've been to some Greek diners that have gyro omelettes on the menu, it's great.

Also deej OTM about drunken horchata.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 6 February 2007 20:04 (eighteen years ago)

Does horchata = orxata, because, if so, OTM.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 6 February 2007 20:05 (eighteen years ago)

Molly: I can't remember! It was my first exposure to gyros EVER so it took me a while to notice and make note of the differences. I just remember that as we went north, the gyros got carb-ier and less sauce-y -- in any case your lunch sounds delish.

Laurel (Laurel), Tuesday, 6 February 2007 20:09 (eighteen years ago)

horchata is so good for cutting through the heat of a spicy salsa.

tuesdays with maury povich (get bent), Tuesday, 6 February 2007 20:09 (eighteen years ago)

here, horchata is a milky, rice drink.

Ms Misery (MissMiseryTX), Tuesday, 6 February 2007 20:10 (eighteen years ago)

It's a milky nutty drink in spain (and where found here), served cold.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 6 February 2007 20:11 (eighteen years ago)

yeah, the mexican one is rice-based, while the mexican one is made with "tigernuts" (so says wikipedia).

tuesdays with maury povich (get bent), Tuesday, 6 February 2007 20:13 (eighteen years ago)

argh, i mean the spanish one is made with tigernuts.

tuesdays with maury povich (get bent), Tuesday, 6 February 2007 20:13 (eighteen years ago)

When I was in Spain, it was also icy (and nutty and milky).

when can williamsburgers have bonita pork burrito/spicy beer lime drink FAP?

be home by 11 (orion), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 00:46 (eighteen years ago)

I have no idea what a 'bonita pork burrito' is, but it sounds *so* much better than a regular old pork burrito.

g00blar (gooblar), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 00:48 (eighteen years ago)

I have a genius plan for a restaurant:

1) Build it where lots of drunk college kids might be found.

2) Keep it open late.

3) Have only a giant griddle and a giant deep fryer.

4) Stock all the frozen junk-food type stuff that you can - chicken strips, waffles, burger patties, sausage, french toast, jalapeno poppers, mozzerela sticks, breaded mushrooms, etc.

5) Provide ample sauces - ranch dressing, nacho cheese, salsa, maple syrup, chocolate sauce, etc.

6) Build it like a prison dining room, with bolted down seating, tile and stainless everything for easy spraying down with a hose and disinfectant. Sauces and such would be as vandal-proof as possible.

7) Allow people to buy stuff by the pound in some way - basically, you say "give me a waffle, with two chicken strips, ten breaded mushrooms, and some chili".

8) Customer then covers their food with whatever sauces they like.

9) The added bonus would be bins of crushed Doritos, potato chips, pretzels, etc. that could then be applied on top of the sauces for extra texture. These would be known as Crumblins™, which would be the name of the establishment. There would be a cute skunk with the same name as the mascot.

I was kind of fucked up with some friends when we came up with this but I think it would probably work. But it would be so not fun to have to run a place like this and deal with the drunk people every night until 4 am.

joygoat (joygoat), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 01:10 (eighteen years ago)

the customers would be a total harshbuzz to your chip-on.

be home by 11 (orion), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 01:31 (eighteen years ago)

i had a chicken burrito from la salsa last night -- their stuff's pretty meh, but this was actually okay since (a) no rice and beans in it, (b) i dumped three different kinds of salsa over it. i wasn't drunk, but it would be perfectly acceptable drunk food.

fifteen years pass...

No idea which old ass food thread to revive, but this felt most fitting.
I got very high earlier and made a hotdog with 1/2 grilled cheese sandwich for a bun. it was mind blowing.
