It's been long enough and we're in a new place, so why the hell not?

luna (luna.c), Friday, 9 February 2007 20:03 (eighteen years ago)

This is the Thread Where I Say that I'm going to make cupcakes this afternoon. These are not only birthday cupcakes (for me), but also a last, desperate bid to get warm.

Sara R-C (Sara R-C), Friday, 9 February 2007 20:13 (eighteen years ago)

Happy birthday! (Um, is it today?)

luna (luna.c), Friday, 9 February 2007 20:13 (eighteen years ago)

Thank you! Nope; it was yesterday. I went out to dinner with an old friend and he didn't even know. Also I had to go to a physiology class. It was the most low key birthday ever!

Tonight I am doing cupcakes and presents with my husband and kids.

I think the most exciting thing that happened yesterday was my sister and Mom both calling me.

Sara R-C (Sara R-C), Friday, 9 February 2007 20:16 (eighteen years ago)

(I should add that it's probably good that it was low key because I have not yet recovered from Christmas!)

Sara R-C (Sara R-C), Friday, 9 February 2007 20:17 (eighteen years ago)

Sara, happy belated!

molly mummenschanz (mollyd), Friday, 9 February 2007 20:18 (eighteen years ago)

Thank you! I would certainly feed you all cupcakes if you were here. (And if you were able to withstand the temperature. Ugh, I have to go out in it to pick my son up soon - at least it is Friday...)

What is everyone else up to? (Friday afternoon slacking off? Please tell me it is warm where you are!)

Sara R-C (Sara R-C), Friday, 9 February 2007 20:19 (eighteen years ago)

yay Luna starting a new thread!

feliz cumpleanos Sara! Glad it was decent one. I want a cupcake. :(

I played hooky today. pretty awesome. So far I've stitched eyes & nose on the teddy bear I'm making, watched some craft shows, walked the dogs and now I'm eating mango sorbet and getting ready to finish the bear.

Ms Misery (MissMiseryTX), Friday, 9 February 2007 20:23 (eighteen years ago)

I should probably be working on encyclopedia stuff but am novel-writing instead, whenever the cat gives me elbow room to do so.

Tep (ktepi), Friday, 9 February 2007 20:26 (eighteen years ago)

I wish I'd played hooky - it's so damned boring here today, I don't know what to do with myself. All the lawyers are gone except one, and it's just us chickens hanging out.

It's warmish here, Sara - about 63 and hazy. (I say 'warmish' because anytime the temp dips below 70, people get out their coats. WTF?)

luna (luna.c), Friday, 9 February 2007 20:26 (eighteen years ago)

Happy belated b-day, Sara!

I'm gearing up to have a raucous and debauched quiet evening since I have to putain de merde d'enculé de chiasse work tomorrow.

M. White (Miguelito), Friday, 9 February 2007 20:27 (eighteen years ago)

Wow Sam - that's pretty productive for playing hooky! I have never made a teddy bear.

I meant to study some today, but I haven't even managed that...

MMMM mango sorbet. (Except that is cold, too!) But it would go with chocolate cupcakes!

Sara R-C (Sara R-C), Friday, 9 February 2007 20:28 (eighteen years ago)

It is 5 degrees F in Northfield; I'm about to go out into it!

(and thank you all for the birthday wishes!)

Sara R-C (Sara R-C), Friday, 9 February 2007 20:29 (eighteen years ago)

It's easy to say sitting here in 63 degree weather, but I miss the cold sometimes. Not so cold it's snot freezing, mind you, but this 'never getting below 50 during the day (okay, sometimes 45)' stuff is so BORING. People in LA do not know what to do with weather, and it is a shame.

luna (luna.c), Friday, 9 February 2007 20:31 (eighteen years ago)

You bite your tongue.

Tep (ktepi), Friday, 9 February 2007 20:33 (eighteen years ago)

Sam, how's Wheezy fitting in?

M. White (Miguelito), Friday, 9 February 2007 20:34 (eighteen years ago)

Hi, Luna!

SF= 55 degrees and light rain and I'm rather enjoying it. I'm off to take a stroll in the rain for 'lunch'.

M. White (Miguelito), Friday, 9 February 2007 20:37 (eighteen years ago)

I know, I should shut up about this winter stuff. Here I am, shutting up.

luna (luna.c), Friday, 9 February 2007 20:38 (eighteen years ago)

I admit that I have a serious need for a cupcake now.

luna (luna.c), Friday, 9 February 2007 20:40 (eighteen years ago)

I'm just saying, the grass is always greener when it isn't covered in snow.

Tep (ktepi), Friday, 9 February 2007 20:41 (eighteen years ago)

Also when it hasn't been peed on by every dog in the neighborhood, but I digress.

luna (luna.c), Friday, 9 February 2007 20:44 (eighteen years ago)

This isn't so much a dog neighborhood as it is a duck sanctuary, and they're pretty fastidious about things like that. So it could be worse.

Tep (ktepi), Friday, 9 February 2007 20:45 (eighteen years ago)

Don't ducks just pee in water anyway?

Great, I went from cupcakes to duck pee.

luna (luna.c), Friday, 9 February 2007 20:47 (eighteen years ago)

Ducks = OK
Cupcakes = OK
Duck Cupcakes = Defer to Tep
Duck Pee = Meh

M. White (Miguelito), Friday, 9 February 2007 20:51 (eighteen years ago)

No duck better pee on my cupcake, or I'm gonna be mad at someone.

luna (luna.c), Friday, 9 February 2007 20:52 (eighteen years ago)

See? That's why you should stay out of the north.

Tep (ktepi), Friday, 9 February 2007 20:55 (eighteen years ago)

damn I want some cupcakes. Maybe I'll actually bake this weekend. . .

Wheezy's okay. she and the dogs are fine but we've had to stop letting her out in the backyard as she keeps getting out of the fence. I don't feel 100% bonded with her yet but hope she'll keep warming up to us.

It's been in the 70s for the past few days but got back down to the 40s-50s yesterday and today. boo! one of the reasons I played hooky. . .

(oh and the bear is v. simple. just a little bday present for my aunt.)

Ms Misery (MissMiseryTX), Friday, 9 February 2007 20:58 (eighteen years ago)

I love to feed the ducks and loons at Stowe Lake in Golden Gate Park. I also just like saying 'loons'.

M. White (Miguelito), Friday, 9 February 2007 21:00 (eighteen years ago)

I like to go to the Japanese Tea Garden in GG Park - especially on rainy days. It's so peaceful. (Plus that bridge is fun to climb, although I suppose it will be a while before I do that again. Stupid knee.)

luna (luna.c), Friday, 9 February 2007 21:05 (eighteen years ago)

I just got an orchid delivered to me at work! It's beautiful! Question: should I leave it here to beautify my cubicle, or take it home, where I would def. enjoy it, but the cats might eat it. What to do?

molly mummenschanz (mollyd), Friday, 9 February 2007 21:09 (eighteen years ago)

Leave it at work until the flowers are gone, and then take it home!

luna (luna.c), Friday, 9 February 2007 21:12 (eighteen years ago)

(Home and out of the cold!)

Molly, do your cats eat flowers regularly? The weirdest thing my cats like is cantaloupe.

Sara R-C (Sara R-C), Friday, 9 February 2007 21:24 (eighteen years ago)

how long does an orchid last? If it will be wilted by Mon. I'd take it with you.

Wheezy has developed an unfortunate taste for stick pins. I think it's the colored pearl on the top of my sewing ones which attract her. I have to hide my pincushion or she treats it like a snack bar.

Ms Misery (MissMiseryTX), Friday, 9 February 2007 21:31 (eighteen years ago)

Yikes! I can see where the pins could look enticing (my 4 year old daughter would be after mine if I didn't keep it tucked away), but your cat?! Wow.

I'd also take the orchid home, but try to keep it somewhere the cats couldn't get to it...

Sara R-C (Sara R-C), Friday, 9 February 2007 21:41 (eighteen years ago)

Strangely enough, our orchids are the ONLY flowers Ava doesn't try to kill.

Apropos of nothing, one todays caterers served salami snadwiches with mayo on them. I have traveled extensively enough in Italy and even the once Italian parts of the south of France where aioli is a staple in bourgois coooking but I have never seen salami and mayo anywhere but here. Mustard (senape), sure, and olive oil, yes and certainly butter in France with saucisson sec, if some sandwich lubrification is required and I'm not as mayo-phobic as some people who will remain namelss but mayo? Wtf?

Also, the odds are good that I'll hear one of the Irishman at one of the bars on Haight today, looking at the rain, and saying to me, "It's a good day... for a duck."

M. White (Miguelito), Friday, 9 February 2007 22:08 (eighteen years ago)

It's okay, you can totally name me, I hate that shit. Tomorrow will be a good day for ducks here, but they better not be ducks who want to pee on my cupcakes because then they will be canard a l'orange.

luna (luna.c), Friday, 9 February 2007 22:11 (eighteen years ago)

Mmmmmm.

(C'mon ducks. Go pee on luna's cupcakes 'cause I'm hungry, dammit.)

M. White (Miguelito), Friday, 9 February 2007 22:13 (eighteen years ago)

This thread is making me unexpectedly hungry.

Sara R-C (Sara R-C), Friday, 9 February 2007 22:18 (eighteen years ago)

http://www.delessiomarket.com/New%20Folder/CupCakes.JPG

This place just opened two blocks from my house. We had their mini cupcakes at our party in December.

M. White (Miguelito), Friday, 9 February 2007 22:23 (eighteen years ago)

Do you see how that doesn't help me one bit?

luna (luna.c), Friday, 9 February 2007 22:24 (eighteen years ago)

Good lord. If that was two blocks from my house I'd be investing in some seriously large pants. YUM.

Sara R-C (Sara R-C), Friday, 9 February 2007 22:25 (eighteen years ago)

You know, luna, it just occurred to me that we have some left over black and white cookies from lunch.

*Ducks to avoid hurled objects*

M. White (Miguelito), Friday, 9 February 2007 22:27 (eighteen years ago)

That was just MEAN.

luna (luna.c), Friday, 9 February 2007 22:28 (eighteen years ago)

Sorry. The Devil made me do it.

*Adopts look of the most angelic innocence that always worked on mom*

M. White (Miguelito), Friday, 9 February 2007 22:30 (eighteen years ago)

i would like to try some of these gourmet cupcake places.

the bear is going back to the drawing. 1. I went about the pattern a bit haphazardly so by the time I seamed it up his appendages were puny and his head misshapen (not enough seam allowance.) 2. when I started stuffing he began sporting many holes. the flannel I made him with was just ripping under the pressure. :( I think I'll have to recut it and put some interfacing on.

doh sorry, that was pretty sewing thread. . .

Ms Misery (MissMiseryTX), Friday, 9 February 2007 22:31 (eighteen years ago)

How big is he supposed to be, Sam?

M. White (Miguelito), Friday, 9 February 2007 22:32 (eighteen years ago)

Yes, well, you thank your lucky stars that I'm not nearby and that my knee is bad, or you would get such a kicking!

luna (luna.c), Friday, 9 February 2007 22:33 (eighteen years ago)

ILX Baked Good Violence. I never thought it would come to this.

I think there is a cupcake place in Mpls called "Cupcake" that I have yet to try. Someday I will!

My cupcakes are done; I half-cheat and make them with a recipe from The Cake Mix Doctor. I'm going to make my husband frost them, though.

Sorry you're having sewing troubles, Sam. It sounds difficult!

Sara R-C (Sara R-C), Friday, 9 February 2007 22:37 (eighteen years ago)

He brought it on himself, Sara.

luna (luna.c), Friday, 9 February 2007 22:40 (eighteen years ago)

*backing away to stay out of potential crossfire*

Sara R-C (Sara R-C), Friday, 9 February 2007 22:41 (eighteen years ago)

Death by cupcake! Hmmm. Sounds interesting.

M. White (Miguelito), Friday, 9 February 2007 22:45 (eighteen years ago)

Ah, no worries - you didn't taunt me with black and white cookies.

luna (luna.c), Friday, 9 February 2007 22:46 (eighteen years ago)

If the place called "Cupcake" was called "Death by Cupcake," I think I would have already visited.

Sara R-C (Sara R-C), Friday, 9 February 2007 22:47 (eighteen years ago)

how is using cake mix cheating sara? I made a cake from scratch last year . . what a pain in the ass! It gave me a new appreciation for mixes.

the bear that shall never be was not a big guy. Just a deformed little thing of stuffing. part of the problem is I've been drawing patterns out on my grid pad so everthing's no bigger than 8 1/2 X 11. :( i'm going to buy some real pattern paper this weekend.

boy's home, done wasting away on ilx-ville for today.

enjoy your sweets, sweets!

Ms Misery (MissMiseryTX), Friday, 9 February 2007 22:54 (eighteen years ago)

I don't know; it just seems like cheating to not start from "scratch." But honestly, the cakes from that Cake Mix Doctor lady are awesome, fast, and you can't screw them up. I am planning to borrow the cupcake themed one from a friend so I can make "White Russian Cupcakes" next weekend.

I do hope your bear comes together over the weekend, Sam. Patterns and grids... it sounds like homework!

Enjoy your weekend... A. is also home, so I suppose I should go make sure he's okay; the kids climb all over him when he gets home.

Sara R-C (Sara R-C), Friday, 9 February 2007 22:59 (eighteen years ago)

They just want to take charge.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 9 February 2007 23:02 (eighteen years ago)

xpost: Orchid -- it's in a pot, so I think it'll last a while. It makes my cubicle look and smell lovely, so I'll keep it here a while.

purdy!
http://farm1.static.flickr.com/123/384919605_f2b7a5ecdc.jpg?v=0

I may try to make a cake from Amy Sedaris' book this weekend. I love her recipes. She means business.

molly mummenschanz (mollyd), Friday, 9 February 2007 23:13 (eighteen years ago)

How do you make a cake out of paper?

M. White (Miguelito), Friday, 9 February 2007 23:31 (eighteen years ago)

It's not too hard, it just doesn't taste very good. Starchy.

molly mummenschanz (mollyd), Friday, 9 February 2007 23:44 (eighteen years ago)

:)

She's supposed to be a cupcake goddess.

M. White (Miguelito), Friday, 9 February 2007 23:45 (eighteen years ago)

I would like a literal where y'all at map with push-pins thing to plot where are the ilxors live. Has there ever been such an attempt?

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Friday, 9 February 2007 23:46 (eighteen years ago)

Damn you for stealing my joke, M. White.

(Will be in SF on the afternoon of March 3rd before flying out from there to London. Care to join my sis and I in a belated birthday celebration for yours truly? [My birthday's the 2nd.])

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 9 February 2007 23:46 (eighteen years ago)

I have to check with management but I'd love to, Ned.

Beth, I believe there is such a map, if my memory serves, However, my memory is a known inebriate and mythomaniac so who knows? You're in Chicago or thereabouts, right?

M. White (Miguelito), Friday, 9 February 2007 23:51 (eighteen years ago)

I have to check with management but I'd love to, Ned.

V. cool. The 3rd is a Saturday, if that helps!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 9 February 2007 23:55 (eighteen years ago)

Then I'll have to check the EPL schedule.

M. White (Miguelito), Friday, 9 February 2007 23:57 (eighteen years ago)

hi.

teeny (teeny), Saturday, 10 February 2007 02:29 (eighteen years ago)

Hellooo.

I should probably be working on encyclopedia stuff but am novel-writing instead

Only +400 words since then. Ugh, I need to make Fridays super-productive.

Tep (ktepi), Saturday, 10 February 2007 02:32 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, you. HI DERE etc. to you and Teeny both. I'm glad this thread's back, it's a good one.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 10 February 2007 02:46 (eighteen years ago)

Hey Teeny!

Are these cake doctor mixes regional? I shall have to look for them.

I've spent the past couple of hours creating a pattern of the adult-swim-bird-robot. Right now I'm waiting for the glue gun to warm up so i can apply the beads. muthafucka better turn out right.

today's been a long, tiring day of errands and chores. I look forward to making an artichoke/jalapeno pizza here in a bit and relaxing on the couch with beer and Netflix. or maybe COPS!!

enjoy yr sat. nights.

Ms Misery (MissMiseryTX), Saturday, 10 February 2007 23:32 (eighteen years ago)

OMG that pizza sounds awesome. Jalapenos!

"Adult-swim-bird-robot?!"

The "cake mix doctor" is this woman who writes books where she basically collects cake recipes using cake mixes and "doctors" them so that they are awesome. She says you can fake a cake, but not the frosting, so there are also lots of good frostings at the end of the books, most of them quite easy.

I made Sour Cream Chocolate Cupcakes with Sour Cream Chocolate Frosting out of the book Chocolate for the Cake Mix Doctor (Anne Byrn is the author). They turned out GREAT. I served them to friends today - and one of the presents I got is the cupcakes cake mix doctor book. You can look at your public library for these books if you want to check them out; they totally rock!

I'm going to lift weights tonight, study physiology, and possibly watch a movie later. Exciting Saturday night plans. But at least the kids will be asleep!

Sara R-C (Sara R-C), Saturday, 10 February 2007 23:46 (eighteen years ago)

I totally heart the Cake Mix Doctor - my sister got me the first of her books and it's full of incredibly good stuff. Mostly, I've made up the chocolate cake, layered with black raspberry and iced with that chocolate glaze (which is like thin fudge and so easy to make), yellow cake with the same glaze, and carrot cake. I've also done two white cakes, one with a simple vanilla frosting for my son, and one with a fresh lemon frosting for my bro-in-law. All so good. Now, I wish I had a cupcake/muffin pan.

Jaq (Jaq), Saturday, 10 February 2007 23:53 (eighteen years ago)

OMG, I need the first of the books for that recipe alone. YUM.

I have two regular sized muffin pans, one from The Baker's Catalog and the other is a Martha Stewart brand one from KMart. I like the Martha one better because I can put it into the dishwasher!

Sara R-C (Sara R-C), Sunday, 11 February 2007 00:03 (eighteen years ago)

I need to check out these books. gathering more cookbooks is def. on my to do list. or rather, er, getting any cookbooks. (what's more than zero?)

adult swim panic robot:
http://www.cbc.ca/gfx/images/news/photos/2007/02/01/boston-panic-cp-11533401.jpg

It's G's handmade v-day present. that and car mats. I'm such a big romantic.

Ms Misery (MissMiseryTX), Sunday, 11 February 2007 01:05 (eighteen years ago)

That is going to be really cute and funny! I got A. a couple of books and a cd. Also a cheesy V-Day themed pin from Disney World while we were there. I am making him a bookmark, but it's a cross stitch project and it's going to be done... uh... not sure when.

I have an insane number of cookbooks; over 100. A huge number of them are dessert focused. I had a party a few weeks ago and some friends mocked me for the number of cookie and cake cookbooks. I didn't hear any complaints about the food I served, though, and there was a direct connection. :)

Sara R-C (Sara R-C), Sunday, 11 February 2007 01:40 (eighteen years ago)

Ha, I don't have to worry about this gushy present nonsense. (Me = heart of flint.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 11 February 2007 01:42 (eighteen years ago)

I can't say what for um, well, reasons, but the things I'm making are coming out really well and making me laugh at the same time.

I love that little guy, Sam.

Someone please bring me a cupcake.

luna (luna.c), Sunday, 11 February 2007 01:46 (eighteen years ago)

Still waitin' on that cupcake.

luna, Wednesday, 21 February 2007 21:20 (eighteen years ago)

all of ilx needs a cupcake now (that sounds really fucking good.)

nuilx has wrecked my afternoon. btw total zero work and outrage at ungrateful, clueless fuckers I should just pack it in and go home.

Ms Misery, Wednesday, 21 February 2007 21:22 (eighteen years ago)

awwwww

wow, what kind of cupcake is that? is that mint frosting?

Ms Misery, Wednesday, 21 February 2007 21:24 (eighteen years ago)

hey sam you did an amazing job with the laymans' explanations, I was thinking the same things you were but you actually posted it!

teeny, Wednesday, 21 February 2007 21:25 (eighteen years ago)

about cupcakes?

Ms Misery, Wednesday, 21 February 2007 21:25 (eighteen years ago)

I would share my box of Tagalongs with all of you!

molly mummenschanz, Wednesday, 21 February 2007 21:25 (eighteen years ago)

hi!

Dr. Superman, Wednesday, 21 February 2007 21:30 (eighteen years ago)

What exactly are these tagalongs, then?

Hey, Sam. Don't let the bastards wear you down.

Michael White, Wednesday, 21 February 2007 21:31 (eighteen years ago)

Delicious peanut butter Girl Scout Cookies. I need someone to help me eat them, or the task will be left up to me. Ugh.

molly mummenschanz, Wednesday, 21 February 2007 21:32 (eighteen years ago)

ack, it's just so much meta-discussion about ilx tech issues reminds me of every bad interaction I've had with a client ever. and I don't get paid to be nice on ilx so. . .

http://farm1.static.flickr.com/111/271277919_34f73d608a.jpg?v=0

A cupcake sounds too 'cakey'. I want one of these.

Michael White, Wednesday, 21 February 2007 21:33 (eighteen years ago)

That looks like some kind of bosom burger.

Kate, non masonic, Wednesday, 21 February 2007 21:35 (eighteen years ago)

Not sure I want to know what that is, Kate.

That above is a religieuse à la rose from Ladurée, a kind of rose flavored double eclair pastry.

Michael White, Wednesday, 21 February 2007 21:40 (eighteen years ago)

Mmmmm....sounds good.

For what it's worth, I don't know what a bosom burger is either. I just made it up.

Kate, non masonic, Wednesday, 21 February 2007 21:42 (eighteen years ago)

That's reassuring, somehow.

Michael White, Wednesday, 21 February 2007 21:43 (eighteen years ago)

Question: I have a flight tomorrow at 6:30am, meaning I probably have to be at the airport at 5am (gross). Jonathan Richman is playing a show tonight. Do I stay home and do laundry, or go see Mr. Richman? I saw him about a year and a half ago and he was delightful.

molly mummenschanz, Wednesday, 21 February 2007 21:45 (eighteen years ago)

He's great, isn't he.

Wanna know how old I am? I saw him in 1984 at the Hammersmith Odeon (?) or was it the Palais?

What time does he go on? How long is your flight?

Michael White, Wednesday, 21 February 2007 21:47 (eighteen years ago)

He is great! Apparently, he'll go on around 8:30. My travel time (with connection) is around 4 hours.

molly mummenschanz, Wednesday, 21 February 2007 21:48 (eighteen years ago)

Can't you sleep on the plane? Esp if you don't get enough sleep from the night before?

Michael White, Wednesday, 21 February 2007 21:50 (eighteen years ago)

my old ass would say stay home but then I'm liable to say that for anything these days.

Ms Misery, Wednesday, 21 February 2007 21:51 (eighteen years ago)

I think it's possible. I deserve an evening of fun! I can throw my clothes together in my suitcase before I go to bed.

molly mummenschanz, Wednesday, 21 February 2007 21:53 (eighteen years ago)

If you're packed, you just need to drag your ass into the shower early in the morning and pass out once you're in your seat. I've done this dozens of times.

Michael White, Wednesday, 21 February 2007 21:55 (eighteen years ago)

where are you going?

Ms Misery, Wednesday, 21 February 2007 21:55 (eighteen years ago)

Buffalo (for the Gram's memorial service). Yeah, I can totally swing it! My goal is not to be hungover and flying. That's never any fun. Now I just need to convince the grumpy and tired BF, or drag a friend along.

molly mummenschanz, Wednesday, 21 February 2007 21:58 (eighteen years ago)

I once got out of a smoke filled club in Barcelona and came back to my hotel with just enough time to throw my stuff into my little traveling bag and get to the airport on time, but unshowered. When I got to Linate outside of Milan, one of the carabinieri's drug sniffing dogs stopped me 'cause I still reeked of hash smoke from the club. Such a lovely time I had helping the cop go through my bag. Man was I tired.

Michael White, Wednesday, 21 February 2007 21:58 (eighteen years ago)

oh boo, sorry. :(

yeah if you can not drink (or stop early) that would probably be best.

Ms Misery, Wednesday, 21 February 2007 21:58 (eighteen years ago)

My condolences, btw, molly.

Michael White, Wednesday, 21 February 2007 21:59 (eighteen years ago)

Ha! That's very similar to my time in Dublin, trying to catch a plane to Madrid. So hungover. Still drunk, actually, from the evening hijinks involving a mulleted and flannel-wearing fellow named Biff (whom I named my cat after) who kept us on free drinks for the entire evening. Luckily, no drug sniffing dogs were involved, but I don't remember that flight at all.

molly mummenschanz, Wednesday, 21 February 2007 22:01 (eighteen years ago)

<i>Luckily, no drug sniffing dogs were involved, but I don't remember that flight at all.</i>

were you holding?

Ms Misery, Wednesday, 21 February 2007 22:02 (eighteen years ago)

Thanks, tout le monde

I love how this yells at you in a red font when you try to use HTML tags!

molly mummenschanz, Wednesday, 21 February 2007 22:03 (eighteen years ago)

were you holding?

As far as I can remember, no.

molly mummenschanz, Wednesday, 21 February 2007 22:04 (eighteen years ago)

So maybe only in your blood stream...

Michael White, Wednesday, 21 February 2007 22:05 (eighteen years ago)

Yes, and stinking up my clothes.

molly mummenschanz, Wednesday, 21 February 2007 22:05 (eighteen years ago)

If you don't drink or limit yourself to one or two and drink lots of water and get four or five hours sleep, you should be fine.

Michael White, Wednesday, 21 February 2007 22:06 (eighteen years ago)

Interesting, this doesn't have that preview window that tells you someone has posted in the meanwhile.

Michael White, Wednesday, 21 February 2007 22:07 (eighteen years ago)

I think that's sage advice! Thanks!

Also, what does this mean:

Continental Airlines Flight 667 Operated by NORTHWEST AIRLINES( nonstop )

Do I go to the Continental desk or the Northwest desk to check in? Damn you, travelocity!

molly mummenschanz, Wednesday, 21 February 2007 22:07 (eighteen years ago)

I believe you go to Northwest.

If I ask my travel agent gf and say it's for a travelocity fare, my remains will never be found.

Michael White, Wednesday, 21 February 2007 22:10 (eighteen years ago)

Understood! And this is why human interaction is way better than these internet cheap ticket travel companies. A real person could explain this to me. The travelocity gnome is no good for this. Also, I have no problem wandering around, looking like an idiot, esp. at that time of the morning. I can blame it on lack of caffeine.

molly mummenschanz, Wednesday, 21 February 2007 22:14 (eighteen years ago)

And late-night concertgoing.

Michael White, Wednesday, 21 February 2007 22:17 (eighteen years ago)

If it's a Continental flight, go to the Continental desk.

luna, Wednesday, 21 February 2007 23:43 (eighteen years ago)

That's not what my sources are saying.

Michael White, Wednesday, 21 February 2007 23:52 (eighteen years ago)

I'm actually getting pretty tired, I have to stay at work for a bit longer, so I think the show may be a no go. I'M BORING.

Northwest is in BOLD on my e-itinerary. But, Continental is first on the list. Damn these legacy carriers.

molly mummenschanz, Wednesday, 21 February 2007 23:58 (eighteen years ago)

good morning sunshines!

did molly make her flight okay? (the character in the book I'm working on is named molly so I kind of feel like I'm talking to her.)

my late-afternoon coding realities vs. user expectation FITE! grumpiness has faded. aahhh. The women of AI kick ass this season (or at least about half of them). The last one who did the Dreamgirls songs slayed me.

Ms Misery, Thursday, 22 February 2007 14:00 (eighteen years ago)

Good morning, Sam!

I hope she made her flight but I suspect she didn't make the Jonathan Richman concert.

Michael White, Thursday, 22 February 2007 15:23 (eighteen years ago)

http://mwwhitesf.livejournal.com/129851.html

Link to a test. Why it's illegal is a little beyond me.

Michael White, Thursday, 22 February 2007 15:24 (eighteen years ago)

argh, what is this illegal link thing happening? are you using the link thing below?

okay i'm so skipping out of work tomorrow to see obama. i can't ask for time off b/c i've been out the last two fridays but i'm going to make it happen. 16,000 tickets have already been claimed and it all just sounds too exciting to miss for something like work.

Ms Misery, Thursday, 22 February 2007 15:25 (eighteen years ago)

i just followed the instructions below and linked successfully on another thread.

Ms Misery, Thursday, 22 February 2007 15:27 (eighteen years ago)

I thought I did too. Oh well, I'll soon get the hang of it.

Michael White, Thursday, 22 February 2007 15:44 (eighteen years ago)

i hate hate hate design work. Pre-teaching days as I was great at it and was my preferred form of web work. Since then, possibly b/c of increased training in programming, I feel like I've just lost the knack. It takes me forever to come up with ideas and then I'm totally lack in cofidence about what I do come up with. Over the next few days I must put aside other projects and finish some logos/site designs.

ugh. Is it friday yet? does anyone have any exciting weekend plans?

Ms Misery, Thursday, 22 February 2007 17:18 (eighteen years ago)

Going Here to shop on Saturday whereupon we will eat our purchases at our little Oscar party on Sunday. whoo hoo.

Michael White, Thursday, 22 February 2007 17:21 (eighteen years ago)

Sam, you're going to see Barack Obama? YOU have exciting weekend plans!

A friend is having an open house on Saturday and we're going to that, unless the weather does what the weatherpeople say it's going to do, which would result in icy roads. Otherwise, I'm studying physiology and feeling stupid, my newest hobby.

Sara R-C, Thursday, 22 February 2007 17:21 (eighteen years ago)

ooo, I forgot about the oscars. I will be watching it alone, as all my entertainment is these days. G refuses to leave the kitchen until he's about to collapse in exhaustion. Tonight I must finish painting the den wall so our 52" tv can be restored to it's glory before Sun.

Ms Misery, Thursday, 22 February 2007 17:22 (eighteen years ago)

God, feeling stupid has been a hobby for me for eons.

I think Sam is going tomorrow to see Obama.

Michael White, Thursday, 22 February 2007 17:23 (eighteen years ago)

Did anyone see the authoress on the Colbert Report talking about Obama?

Michael White, Thursday, 22 February 2007 17:24 (eighteen years ago)

Feeling even stupider since I didn't even realize it was Oscars weekend (Michael, if only you were taking this class with me; we could have a contest to see who felt dumber.)

Now, do I watch the Oscars when I haven't seen any of the movies? That is the question.

Sara R-C, Thursday, 22 February 2007 17:25 (eighteen years ago)

yes barak obama rally tomorrow (although I guess friday afternoon could count as weekend.) This is still tenative though as my naughty escaping work plan could be thrown. keeping my fingers crossed.

G's going to a bachelor party sat night so I will probably hang out with the animals, some beers and our stack of unwatched netflix. and knitting! can't forget that. . .

Ms Misery, Thursday, 22 February 2007 17:27 (eighteen years ago)

oh, also, I miss Colbert far too much. Who's the authoress?

Ms Misery, Thursday, 22 February 2007 17:31 (eighteen years ago)

Debra J. Dickerson

[Removed Illegal Link]

It's not that I don't understand what she means, but she doesn't see Obama as 'black'.

Michael White, Thursday, 22 February 2007 17:44 (eighteen years ago)

Why does it keep doing that?

http://www.januarymagazine.com/artcult/endofblackness.html

Michael White, Thursday, 22 February 2007 17:44 (eighteen years ago)

I wonder if there's a limit on how long the link title can be?

Michael White, Thursday, 22 February 2007 17:50 (eighteen years ago)

author link

Ms Misery, Thursday, 22 February 2007 17:53 (eighteen years ago)

I posted {link 'The End of Blackness'}http://www.januarymagazine.com/artcult/endofblackness.html{/link}

Michael White, Thursday, 22 February 2007 17:54 (eighteen years ago)

I quickily scanned the article and didn't see a mention of obama. what's her specific beef there? Is it b/c his father was african and his mother white?

Ms Misery, Thursday, 22 February 2007 17:55 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah. Therefore he's not really 'black' since he's not descended from enslaved Africans.

Michael White, Thursday, 22 February 2007 17:56 (eighteen years ago)

I hate arguments like that. It is not helpful in terms of fixing America's f-ed up racial relations.

Ms Misery, Thursday, 22 February 2007 17:59 (eighteen years ago)

I know what she means, on one hand, but on the other, if a racist treats you just the same, what difference does it make to you whether your father is Kenyan born or of 400 year American lineage?

Michael White, Thursday, 22 February 2007 18:02 (eighteen years ago)

i'll go around asking everybody at the rally tomorrow what they think.

I think your link didn't work was b/c it included single quotes.

Ms Misery, Thursday, 22 February 2007 20:21 (eighteen years ago)

Hmmm

Michael White, Thursday, 22 February 2007 20:39 (eighteen years ago)

Hello all! I'm in Buffalo, and the lovely fellow at the curbside checkin told me I was flying Northwest, not Continental.

There's 10 inches of snow in Buffalo.

I'm going to a place called Schwabl's for dinner, which has world famous BEEF ON WECK.

molly mummenschanz, Thursday, 22 February 2007 23:14 (eighteen years ago)

Was ist 'weck', bitte?

Michael White, Thursday, 22 February 2007 23:16 (eighteen years ago)

Weck ist eine (this ends my knowledge of 2 years of German) roll, similar to a Kaiser roll, except with salt chunks and carroway seeds on top. Put some wonderful and zesty Polish horserasdish on there, and you're good to go. This was the best beef on weck (solely a Buffalonian thing) I've ever had.

molly mummenschanz, Friday, 23 February 2007 01:02 (eighteen years ago)

10 inches of snow! the north be crazy. today, came to work in only a tshirt, no jacket neccesary.

anxious about Obama rally today. they've moved his speech time up until 3 and worry the venue (outdoors) might reach it's 20k capacity. there's no way I can leave here early enough to get a decent spot, I'd be stuck in the back watching big screens. But this is the largest rally for a candidate here since Regan in 84. And a UT Law professor compared it to having the chance to see Senator Kennedy in 1960. I admit it, I'm subject to hype. I'm also really feeling this guy. I don't want to miss it. But also don't want to risk disfavor at the job. hmmm. . .

Ms Misery, Friday, 23 February 2007 14:04 (eighteen years ago)

Sam, I'd probably go (but I say that as a person whose risk of disfavor at my job is when my kids say, "I hate you Mommy"). So I'm no help here am I.

10 inches of snow, huh. We're expecting some this weekend, from all weather reports, but it sounds like it is the type that is going to cause dangerous road conditions. I hate that. I'm assuming that New York is colder than Tennesse, though (am I remembering that right Molly - Nashville?). Also, now I want one of these Beef on Weck things.

Sara R-C, Friday, 23 February 2007 14:17 (eighteen years ago)

found out two days ago that i am losing my job. *le sigh*.

homosexual II, Friday, 23 February 2007 14:17 (eighteen years ago)

I love anything with salt chunks.

i would have no fear skipping out on work on a friday afternoon but I've been out the last two fridays in a row. : ( also I've been a bit bitchy and whip-crack-y this week so I'm afraid to ask my otherwise laid-back boss for a favor. will see how I feel around noon.

Ms Misery, Friday, 23 February 2007 14:20 (eighteen years ago)

oh no mandee :(

teeny, Friday, 23 February 2007 15:16 (eighteen years ago)

Mandee, that's awful! :-/

Ned Raggett, Friday, 23 February 2007 15:17 (eighteen years ago)

found out two days ago that i am losing my job. *le sigh*.

argh, I didn't see this xpost! I'm sorry mandee!

is it a lay-off type thing? do you think you'll be able to get another fairly easily?

Ms Misery, Friday, 23 February 2007 15:22 (eighteen years ago)

Mandee, that's terrible.

Michael White, Friday, 23 February 2007 15:23 (eighteen years ago)

Yikes, I'm sorry to hear about the job loss. Crossing my fingers for you to find something (hey, something even better) fast!!!

Sara R-C, Friday, 23 February 2007 16:49 (eighteen years ago)

Manders, come to London and we'll look after you! Sorry about the job sweetheart.

Mark C, Friday, 23 February 2007 17:04 (eighteen years ago)

Good luck Mandee! Your soon-to-be ex employers are fools !

Beth Parker, Friday, 23 February 2007 17:14 (eighteen years ago)

Mandee! That's terrible. Good luck!

Yeah, I just woke up (I love you parents, for not getting me out of bed and letting me recuperate from my 4am Central Time Zone wake-up the day before!) and I'm seeing a fresh coat of snow on everything, so we're probably almost up to a foot now. But it looks so pretty! Yay, snow! My dad even came upstairs to deliver me coffee. Bless his heart. Oh god. My Northerness and new-found Southerness: FITE! I'm leaving Sunday, and will happily go back to 65 degree temps in Nashvegas.

molly mummenschanz, Friday, 23 February 2007 17:36 (eighteen years ago)

SNOW! (in all Buffalonian honesty, this is nothing)

http://farm1.static.flickr.com/176/400101236_a6835956b2.jpg?v=0

As I was upstairs and writing an email, my parents thought I lost all my Northern Snow Belt sensibilities, having moved down South, and started looking for me outside, because they knew I was taking pictures, thinking that I fell into this:

http://farm1.static.flickr.com/169/400101238_75ac89061b.jpg?v=0

molly mummenschanz, Friday, 23 February 2007 21:32 (eighteen years ago)

Ha, you're cold.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 23 February 2007 21:33 (eighteen years ago)

It's actually 30 something, so it's not too bad. I was expecting worse.

molly mummenschanz, Friday, 23 February 2007 21:34 (eighteen years ago)

Hilarious that your parents thought you had fallen into the snow. I'm imagining Little House on the Prairie blizzard conditions, but that looks pretty harmless (on the ground already!).

We are expecting a big snowstorm tomorrow; everyone is talking about tons of snow, icy roads, etc. If it is as bad as all that, I won't go to Mpls to a friend's open house. It is great to be able to anticipate staying home through a snowstorm - very cozy, actually!

Sara R-C, Friday, 23 February 2007 21:36 (eighteen years ago)

I know! My mom said, "You went outside without a jacket or boots! I thought we'd have to start digging!"

molly mummenschanz, Friday, 23 February 2007 21:43 (eighteen years ago)

When she starts tying a rope around you before you leave the house... that's when you know there's a problem.

(Going outside without a jacket or boots means you are a tuff Northerner, doesn't it?!)

Sara R-C, Friday, 23 February 2007 21:46 (eighteen years ago)

Hah! Yeah, I'm tuff!

Sara, I hope you don't get such bad weather!

I just checked the Weather channel, and it's really only 19F here. I'm glad my strong constitution hasn't left me. The weather looks good here for a while (no storms), so whatever you're getting probably won't make its way here and delay my flight on Sunday.

molly mummenschanz, Friday, 23 February 2007 21:50 (eighteen years ago)

Ha, I'm tuff, no worries about me and weather! (Uh, and I don't really have to go anyplace until Tuesday; if bad weather is the in the works, better tomorrow than on a day I have class).

Hopefully your flight will be fine and you'll get back to the sunny (?) - okay at least warmer - south safely!

Sara R-C, Friday, 23 February 2007 22:01 (eighteen years ago)

Obama rally, sweet.

http://farm1.static.flickr.com/146/400211035_a2f7f65be6_m.jpg

more here

having to clean an entire, renovation flithy house, on a sat. morning. not so sweet. :(

Ms Misery, Saturday, 24 February 2007 15:51 (eighteen years ago)

It looks like it was great! (So - tons of people there I suppose? Was it wildly inspiring?)

Love your glasses, too, Sam, btw!

Sara R-C, Saturday, 24 February 2007 16:48 (eighteen years ago)

that is a great pic!

teeny, Saturday, 24 February 2007 17:00 (eighteen years ago)

thanks, it was totally by accident though as my camera autofocused on that dude's sign. but it looks nice.

he was very inspiring. said all the things I think in my head. I know talk is easy but I really like his talk and hope he gets the chance to make some of the talk happen. I need to get his books.

The paper said about 15k showed up, def. crowded. I was v. tired, wet and muddy afterwards. and had to walk forever b/c the streets were so clogged with people trying to get buses. that was inspiring, that so many people came out. very diverse crowd from kids just barely old enough to vote to white haired old ladies who probably went to JFK rallies. about two-thirds white. I just hope he's getting big crowds everywhere b/c austin is a very liberal city and not very representive of the south.

Ms Misery, Saturday, 24 February 2007 18:18 (eighteen years ago)

t**t, Sunday, 25 February 2007 15:09 (eighteen years ago)

(oops. was wrong button)

erm, we are having, like, snow in moderation and -4 C, at the mo. tho two last nights were more in the region of -20 C. uhuh.

t**t, Sunday, 25 February 2007 15:11 (eighteen years ago)

it is officially spring in tx. took the dogs for a long walk and would like to do more outside. G is laid up in bed though, after a bachelor party last night. he is done in. it is noon and he almost never sleeps past 7!

Ms Misery, Sunday, 25 February 2007 18:07 (eighteen years ago)

Sounds like a good party!

Michael White, Sunday, 25 February 2007 18:09 (eighteen years ago)

I'm sure it was horrible. I asked if there were strippers and he mumbled yes but no details.

But it was a very old friend, the guy who introduced us actually, so I'll cut him some slack.

Ms Misery, Sunday, 25 February 2007 18:12 (eighteen years ago)

I went to a bachelor's party once where the stripper was so skanky one of the guys went home and told his wife he was never having sex again.

They ended up having another child, so I'm relatively sure that he was exaggerating.

Sometimes you have drink at those parties just to kill any potential memory.

Michael White, Sunday, 25 February 2007 18:21 (eighteen years ago)

I woke up one minute before my alarm after a long dream where Ralph Nader was trying to put the moves on me. I am very disturbed.

(oh and the stripper apparently wasn't bad looking but had just come over from Russia six months ago. depressing.)

Ms Misery, Monday, 26 February 2007 13:31 (eighteen years ago)

Sam! I had weird dreams too! One was sad and involved Gertrude (my cat) being hit by a car. Sad! She's an indoor cat, so that probably won't happen. I then had another that involved Seattle, calendars and the Parrots of Telegraph Hill. Please tell me there was something about that on NPR that I was dreaming along with, or I too will be disturbed.

My other cat Stella is sneezing violently when she eats or drinks water. It's not good. She then gets snot all over her face. It's sad! I have to make an appt. at the vet, I'm afraid.

molly mummenschanz, Monday, 26 February 2007 14:08 (eighteen years ago)

they were talking about the parrots of telegraph hill on NPR this morning!

Ms Misery, Monday, 26 February 2007 14:15 (eighteen years ago)

Ok, thank god! I was having one of those "I can't wake up but will dream a long with NPR" moments.

molly mummenschanz, Monday, 26 February 2007 14:19 (eighteen years ago)

yeah, so ive been giving this being laid off thing another think, and im kind of excited about it now! looks like i'll be getting a 30% bonus for sticking around until the inevitable guillotine falls, and hell, im gonna do it. (30% bonus for me=~$12k).

Btw, the reason i am getting laid off has to do with this

homosexual II, Monday, 26 February 2007 14:21 (eighteen years ago)

oh shit. . .I remember reading that in the paper. your store/office won't transition into a Whole Foods.

Severance/bonus can be nice though. Gives you some breathing space and lets you think about what you want to do next.

Ms Misery, Monday, 26 February 2007 14:22 (eighteen years ago)

yeah i work at the corporate office, and most of us are getting the axe.
i think most of the store employees are safe, unless they are in a store that will be closed.

homosexual II, Monday, 26 February 2007 14:28 (eighteen years ago)

My friend lives just above the trees those parrots hang out in on Telegraph Hill. Apparently they make a lot of noise at times.

Michael White, Monday, 26 February 2007 14:43 (eighteen years ago)

there's a flock of wild parrots like those here in Austin. Though not as many. I see them chilling in several parts of town. Also, patita, sometimes of this thread, has a couple of those guys.

Ms Misery, Monday, 26 February 2007 14:45 (eighteen years ago)

I woke up one minute before my alarm after a long dream where Ralph Nader was trying to put the moves on me. I am very disturbed.

I once had a dream that I was having a torrid affair with Ari Fleischer. (I'm always having weird dreams, but that one sticks out as particularly bizarre.)

Extra 12K sounds good for now. I do hope you find something fast, Mandee.

My 8 year old son is home sick today with a high fever. :(

Sara R-C, Monday, 26 February 2007 15:01 (eighteen years ago)

What are the entrance requirements for TITTWIS? Are there dues? Do you have to say any kind of pledge? Cuz I like you guys and want to join your club.

Maria :D, Monday, 26 February 2007 15:39 (eighteen years ago)

pls join in our club! no requirements. cupcakes are nice though.

Ms Misery, Monday, 26 February 2007 15:42 (eighteen years ago)

None whatsoever. It's free colloquy amongst friendly people.

Michael White, Monday, 26 February 2007 15:42 (eighteen years ago)

The lack of a new messages prompt is going to lead to some hilarity, I [predict.

I'm sorry to hear that, Sara. Flu?

Michael White, Monday, 26 February 2007 15:43 (eighteen years ago)

Maybe flu, I don't know. Just a high fever. I gave him children's motrin and now he's playing Star Wars 2. (My suggestion of "get some more sleep" completely ignored...)

Hi Maria!

Sara R-C, Monday, 26 February 2007 15:46 (eighteen years ago)

the lack of new msgs think is kind of suck. people will post something sad or serious and I'm all "mmm, cupcakes!"

Ms Misery, Monday, 26 February 2007 15:50 (eighteen years ago)

Cupcakes are good, too, Sam, the lack of a new messages thing just makes it harder to establish or follow a direction the thread is taking.

Michael White, Monday, 26 February 2007 15:56 (eighteen years ago)

Mandee: major bummer! Coincidentally, they're building a Whole Food right across from our Wild Oats. I wonder if that plan is gonna go down the toilet.

Sara: I hope your son feels better!

My car is not long for this world, I'm afraid. It's had a hard life up north (rusted out underneath, etc.). It's now leaking coolant, and making 2 separate odd and embarrassing noises. I just want to get to work and back. I do not relish the idea of buying a new used car (hello, student loans and librarian salary!). I really would like to buy an old orange Saab, or something AMC, but that is probably not the smart thing to do. Someone in Ben's parents' neighborhood has this BEAUTIFUL old grey Renault wagon. I lust after it.

molly mummenschanz, Monday, 26 February 2007 15:56 (eighteen years ago)

I'm all for cupcakes at any moment, regardless of seriousness... does that make me shallow?

I miss the xpost warnings, too, though.

Molly - buying cars sounds scary to me. We bought a used Passat from a friend last fall, but my husband arranged the whole thing so I'm still clueless about everything. Good luck!

Sara R-C, Monday, 26 February 2007 16:04 (eighteen years ago)

I was just looking on craigslist, and the only things in my price range are old pick up trucks.

I've only purchased cars from my parents before. i do not know how this works.

I had the BEST puffed pastry this weekend. Maraschino cherries are delicious.

Has anyone tried putting the bite-sized candy bars in cupcakes? I haven't, but the idea makes me want to run home and bake some.

molly mummenschanz, Monday, 26 February 2007 16:07 (eighteen years ago)

Mmmmm maraschino cherries. I've never tried putting candy into cupcakes, but I bet it would be awesome. (Peanut butter cupcakes with chocolate frosting and then small Reese's peanut butter cups inside? Sign me up for THAT.)

Sara R-C, Monday, 26 February 2007 16:23 (eighteen years ago)

I had puff pasrty last night, too, only mine was filled with minced prosciutto and fig paste.

Michael White, Monday, 26 February 2007 16:27 (eighteen years ago)

Ooh! Delicious! Was it a filo dough?

Currently lusting after this.

Must be sensible!

molly mummenschanz, Monday, 26 February 2007 16:32 (eighteen years ago)

okay those candy bar cupcakes sound awesome. so do cupcakes with dried cherries. I really need to bake this week.

I also really need to buy a car. ugh.

Ms Misery, Monday, 26 February 2007 17:28 (eighteen years ago)

Dealing with an ailing car is annoying. When is it time to stop dropping money in it? My dad had a good point this weekend: "when you're afraid your car isn't going to take you from point A to point B, it's time to get something else."

Stella the cat: I just found out it's only when she drinks water that she starts sneezing violently. Weird! Must call the vet.

molly mummenschanz, Monday, 26 February 2007 19:39 (eighteen years ago)

maybe she's getting water in her nose?

Ms Misery, Monday, 26 February 2007 19:40 (eighteen years ago)

Maybe! I don't know! She's been mildly sneezing for the past week or so (no big deal), and now it's cuckoo. I feel like I need to give her a tissue, the poor thing. But, after she drinks water, it's a stream of maybe 10 really loud sneezes accompanied by my desire to wipe her nose.

molly mummenschanz, Monday, 26 February 2007 19:43 (eighteen years ago)

Okay the cat sneezing after drinking water thing is pretty mysterious. Is the cat fine otherwise? So weird!

Sara R-C, Monday, 26 February 2007 20:55 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, she's totally fine otherwise! She's got an appointment at the vet tomorrow afternoon.

molly mummenschanz, Monday, 26 February 2007 20:57 (eighteen years ago)

good morning good morning.

tell me something good.

Ms Misery, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 13:47 (eighteen years ago)

hi sam! i'm in the middle of my radio show. surprisingly, everything is cued up 3 songs in advance! if you're bored, you can listen to it here

molly mummenschanz, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 15:16 (eighteen years ago)

I'm listening.

Maria :D, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 15:19 (eighteen years ago)

Good morning! "something good." Hommmm... here's all I have:

Tonight at class, my lab partners and I have to give a 3 minute report about the hormone oxytocin. (Physiology class = strange combination of college and 6th grade). I suggested that we choreograph and interpretive dance about the hormone, but another person said that considering the parts oxytocin acts on, we probably can't do that dance at Saint Kate's.

Sara R-C, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 15:19 (eighteen years ago)

oh hooray! i must warn you: my caffeine consumption is dangerously low and i've already accidentally played a burt bacharach xmas song.

molly mummenschanz, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 15:21 (eighteen years ago)

As long as you stop short of playing that horrible Xmas Shoes song, I'm sure you'll be forgiven.

Sara R-C, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 15:25 (eighteen years ago)

molly, which show is yours?

Michael White, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 15:27 (eighteen years ago)

bah, I can't stream it b/c it's .ram

Ms Misery, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 15:27 (eighteen years ago)

I love burt bacharach!

Maria :D, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 15:27 (eighteen years ago)

do i play the delightful schlock-fest "mac arthur park" by richard harris? it may very well happen. it's 7 minutes long.

molly mummenschanz, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 15:30 (eighteen years ago)

bah, I hate lingering aftertones of fights. we hardly ever fight which I think makes it ten times worse. *deep breaths, be thankful for new anti-anxiety meds*

But on the upside I have therapy tonight. I can cry and curse and bitch and moan to my heart's delight. And I'm not going to ask him to pick me up. I'll take the bus, get home at 8:30 tired and starving and try to make him feel guilty with my martyrdom. Probably won't work though.

Ms Misery, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 15:35 (eighteen years ago)

I hear ya, Sam.

Michael White, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 15:36 (eighteen years ago)

Bummer, Sam! Take yourself out for a nice lunch. You deserve it.

molly mummenschanz, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 15:37 (eighteen years ago)

Whenever I try to play martyr, nobody notices.

Maria :D, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 15:38 (eighteen years ago)

You need to use more arrows and and a higher cross, Maria.

Michael White, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 15:38 (eighteen years ago)

Jk

Michael White, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 15:38 (eighteen years ago)

Bummer, Sam! Take yourself out for a nice lunch. You deserve it.

i'm going to play uno with my friends from my old job.maybe i'll buy myself something naughty like cheetos!

now we are arguing via email about who does more around the house. so not helpful! and hip hop nation is playing DMX. truly the world is against me today.

Ms Misery, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 15:45 (eighteen years ago)

I would be pissed if someone left my cake in the rain.

Maria :D, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 15:55 (eighteen years ago)

Do you have any Diane Cluck you can play?

Maria :D, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 15:56 (eighteen years ago)

Who leaves cakes out in the rain? And why can't get the recipe again? And why is he singing so high?

Someone from work just emailed me, saying, "Thanks. Now that song will be stuck in my head all day."

Diane Cluck! I will try to bring some for next week's show! (I'm back at work now)

molly mummenschanz, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 16:13 (eighteen years ago)

I once got on the excelsior thread with a joke about leaving a cake out in the rain. Happy days.

Mark C, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 16:15 (eighteen years ago)

discussion of this song always makes me think of the talent show on the simpsons where the indian girl performs it on zitar.

Ms Misery, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 16:16 (eighteen years ago)

The first time I actually *listened* to the words of that song, I thought it was a joke. I think I hurt my dad's feelings. I was 15. It's his "Favorite song of all-time!" Bless his heart.

molly mummenschanz, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 16:18 (eighteen years ago)

These guys were just on Hip Hop Nation:
http://www.thepackonline.com/PackPhoto1.jpg

They sing the Vans song, they are skaters, they are but teenagers and proteges of Too $hort (which I didn't know). I love them dearly. That Vans song is the SHIT!

Ms Misery, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 16:34 (eighteen years ago)

Oh you people and your knowledge of songs. I have fallen too far behind since having kids to ever catch up! (Don't mind me, I'm just jealous.)

Sara R-C, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 16:39 (eighteen years ago)

I don't know much. just hip hop hits (not even a true hip hop head!) or stuff my brother gives me. I really don't have the time/interest to go out looking for music. (my favorite band ever must be out there, crying, that I haven't heard them yet.)

Ms Misery, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 16:44 (eighteen years ago)

I like 60s girl groups a lot. That Nico song I played is currently my favorite song. Nico gone girl group! PERFECT!

molly mummenschanz, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 16:48 (eighteen years ago)

I've never even heard of Nico! But that does sound fun...

To find out about music stuff, I have taken to figuring out what song is being played on tv shows and visiting friend's myspaces to see what song they have on their profile. Also, several Hastings people are music heads (Dan, John, FB), and if they mention something, I will generally look it up.

All of this is leading nowhere, apparently; I'm playing a c.d. I bought in 1990 right now.

Sara R-C, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 16:57 (eighteen years ago)

about half my ipod is 90s or earlier. As I grow older, I've discovered that my 13-yr-old self pretty much had it right re: music.

Ms Misery, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 17:00 (eighteen years ago)

Sara, have you ever tried last.fm or Pandora? They're great. You type in a band or genre you like, and it plays similar stuff. It's a streaming program and I use it a lot. I've found some interesting stuff that way.

Nico -- she sang with the Velvet Underground for a spell, is featured heavily in Wes Anderson films. Have you seen The Royal Tennebaums? That crazy, deep female voice is hers. Delightful!

molly mummenschanz, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 17:02 (eighteen years ago)

Did you know Nico slept with Alain Delon?

Michael White, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 17:02 (eighteen years ago)

No! I didn't! Quel scandale!

molly mummenschanz, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 17:04 (eighteen years ago)

the DJ just said Beyonce and Jay-Z have split b/c she doesn't want to get married! Not sure if I believe it although that once recent song of his did seem to hint at it.

argh I need lunch. my attention has really gone to hell if I'm getting so peaked by celeb gossip.

Ms Misery, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 17:05 (eighteen years ago)

Molly - yes, I'm a member of both those websites - just trying to figure out how to use them in more... uh... useful ways. (I need to sleep less and spend more time on figuring out music).

I am kind of overwhelmed at the various ways you can find music now, too (radio, but not limited to local stations because of the Web; websites, even the free "song of the day" podcasts). It's really cool, but a long way from hearing something on a local station or hearing something a friend is listening to and liking it. I can't keep up!

Re: Nico - I haven't seen The Royal Tennebaums (yet...), but at least I've heard of the Velvet Underground.

Sara R-C, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 17:11 (eighteen years ago)

From Wikipedia:

After appearing in several television commercials, Nico landed a tiny role in Alberto Lattuada's film La Tempesta (1958), and then appeared in Rudolph Maté's For the First Time with Mario Lanza later that year. In 1959, she was invited to the set of Federico Fellini's La Dolce Vita and attracted the attention of the acclaimed director, who promptly gave her a sizable role in his film. By this time, Nico had moved to New York to take acting classes with Lee Strasberg. After splitting her time between New York and Paris, she landed the lead role in Jacques Poitrenaud's Strip-Tease (1963). For that film, Nico recorded the title track, which was produced by Serge Gainsbourg but not released. (It was finally released on CD in 2001 as part of the French compilation Le Cinéma de Serge Gainsbourg.) During this period she had a son, Ari (born 1962), with actor Alain Delon. Although the child was raised mostly by Delon's parents, for many years Delon denied paternity.

Nico had a short-lived romantic relationship with the Velvet Underground's main singer and songwriter, Lou Reed, at this time, one of her several romances with prominent musicians including fellow Velvet John Cale, The Doors' icon Jim Morrison, Jackson Browne, Rolling Stones' founder Brian Jones, Tim Buckley and The Stooges' Iggy Pop.

Michael White, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 17:11 (eighteen years ago)

Sam, go get that lunch!

Sara R-C, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 17:12 (eighteen years ago)

Her death has always made me so sad. She quit the heroin, and started excercising:

(from the same page)

On July 18, 1988, Nico was injured riding her bicycle while vacationing with her son, Ari, in her favorite haunt of previous years, Ibiza. Supposedly she had a minor heart attack while riding her bicycle and hit her head as she fell.

molly mummenschanz, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 17:14 (eighteen years ago)

accidental death of recovered junkies kills thread.

;)

Ms Misery, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 19:27 (eighteen years ago)

Hah! Molly kills thread with her morbid fascination regarding dead popstars.

molly mummenschanz, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 19:29 (eighteen years ago)

I thought I killed the thread with my overall cluelessness.

Sara R-C, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 19:41 (eighteen years ago)

perhaps it died of it's own accord.

I have no interesting tidbits to liven it up. I won no hands of uno and have nothing for the afternoon but figuring out how to improve my crap site design. *sig* afternoon is the least productive time for me ever. I should start coming in at 4!

Ms Misery, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 19:43 (eighteen years ago)

I'm actually leaving work at 2pm to take Ms. Stella to the vet. I hope she doesn't have anything stuck up her nose.

molly mummenschanz, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 19:45 (eighteen years ago)

Stupid, there is SO MUCH STUPID happening today. TOO MUCH STUPID.

luna, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 19:47 (eighteen years ago)

haha. . .maybe it's just allergies or something.

Ms Misery, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 19:47 (eighteen years ago)

Allergies, just like her mama.

molly mummenschanz, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 19:54 (eighteen years ago)

small triumph: needing to find past 2 paystubs, and actually knowing where to look.

I'd tried to post something about parrots yonks ago but then I got tied up in the craziness of registering. in any case, hello!

patita, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 20:14 (eighteen years ago)

Hey K!

Stupid, there is SO MUCH STUPID happening today. TOO MUCH STUPID.

:( I'm sorry.

my day has been kind of bleh too. I'm going to have reeses now! sweet, bad for me food, take away my stress!

Ms Misery, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 20:21 (eighteen years ago)

small triumph: needing to find past 2 paystubs, and actually knowing where to look.

You're way ahead of me, that's for sure.

I hope everyone's day improves! I have an exciting evening of physiology ahead of me. It's possible that I might even have fun. (And even if I don't, I have a hot cross bun that A. made that I can take for a snack... sooooo yummy.)

Sara R-C, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 20:55 (eighteen years ago)

Stella has either an upper respiratory infection, or allergies. As per the vet's instructions, I gave her antibiotic and a half a benadryl. I must not have shoved the benadryl all the way down her throat because then she got the gross foaming of the mouth. The poor girl! She was so pissed at me. Poor little thing had wheezy lungs and a swollen gland in her throat.

molly mummenschanz, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 21:58 (eighteen years ago)

:( hope she gets better soon. pilling cats is the worst.

Ms Misery, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 22:00 (eighteen years ago)

Thanks, Sam! It's a shame that this was my first time giving her any pills. Now she's going to HATE it every time I try to give her one. And we have 10 days of this.

molly mummenschanz, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 22:01 (eighteen years ago)

Aw, she'll be okay. As she starts to feel better the discomfort will be reduced, I'm sure.

Is Patita someone I should know?

Hi all!

Mark C, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 22:02 (eighteen years ago)

do you have one of those syringe piller things? you stick it in their mouth and it pushes the pill way back. Other things I have tried: coating the pill in butter then sticking it in; throwing the pill in followed by a dropper full of broth or milk; holding the mouth closed tight after popping pill and gently rubbing up and down on the throat. Most of those require two people. argh, I hate giving cats pills. And it doesn't matter how you do it they're always going to hate it and always be pissed at you.

Ms Misery, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 22:03 (eighteen years ago)

When I got Gertrude from the SPCA, she had ear mites and the kitty flu. My friend and I had to wrap her in a towel, like a burrito, give her ear drops, and shove antibiotics down her throat. She hated it. But, she turned out to be the nicest cat ever, so I guess this round of pill may give Stella character. Or a lot of spittle for me to wipe up. Eww.

I know the trick of grabbing them from behind, and popping open their mouth, dropping the pill in, and rubbing their throats so they swallow. Gertie is great at this. Stella, not so much. These poor female cats, having allergies and shit just like their mama.

molly mummenschanz, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 22:07 (eighteen years ago)

There is no across the board guaranteed way to pill a cat. Invest in chain mail gloves, though.

Michael White, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 23:35 (eighteen years ago)

And Bactine.

Michael White, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 23:37 (eighteen years ago)

argh. . .

My aunt was supposed to come today to stay with us for a little while. She's been feeling really down and wanted me to take time off to go somewhere with her. (she lives about 2.5 hours away). I told her I couldn't at the moment although I planned to go see her in march, she was welcome to come see us, blah blah.

Well last night her number's on my phone and I expect it to be her saying when she'll be here. Instead it was her husband telling me she had swallowed poision that morning and was in the hospital.I told him I would be there first thing this morning.

Then she called me back late last night saying she was in ER, they had pumped her stomach, gave her something to calm her down and she was going home. me - "?!?!?" She said it was just a mistake and she was just going home. Then she calls again and said since she wouldn't agree to go to a pysch hospital they had a judge sign an order forcing her and the police were escorting her to a hospital in another city.

:(

I'm calmer now b/c I know she's physically safe and will have the chance to be helped. But I also feel horrible b/c I know how much it sucks to be made to go to the hospital when you don't want to. I also feel guilty that I didn't know she was that bad. I would much rather have taken time off from work to go visit her at home rather than the hospital. don't know if that would've helped any.

planning to go up there tomorrow assuming I can visit her.

depression fucking sucks.

Ms Misery, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 13:47 (eighteen years ago)

Sam, I'm so sorry to hear this.

Would chocolate chip cookies transfer in the mail well from TN to TX?

molly mummenschanz, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 14:52 (eighteen years ago)

haha I'm sure they would but could you fex ex them? ;)

still haven't heard from her husband today. not sure when she'll be allowed to have visitors but am still planning to head up there tomorrow.

I've been waiting to give her this guy though not under these circumstances:
http://farm1.static.flickr.com/149/397090307_686021ea04_m.jpg

:(

Ms Misery, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 14:57 (eighteen years ago)

Oh Sam, that's terrible! My sympathies.

Michael White, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 15:31 (eighteen years ago)

Sam, that's awful! I'm glad your aunt is in a safe spot for the moment, but still...

Sara R-C, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 16:04 (eighteen years ago)

Sam, that's rough. I'm sorry to hear about it. Hopefully you'll be able to see her.

patita, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 16:10 (eighteen years ago)

yeah I'm booking my car now. her husband's pretty lost and upset now. She's pissed as hell that he called an ambulance and that she's stuck in the hospital now. I told him this will pass and it was the right thing.

I also told him not to call her son yet (she has two but only is in contact with one who's a very self-involved preacher and sees her less than I do). I just know in her angry state of mind having everyone show up will make it worse. It's hard to get a grasp of the situation over the phone from him as he's just not doing good either. I don't feel confident about making decisions like that until I can see her myself. I mean, I will say 'let's call him', but my first instinct is to hold off right now until the situation is clearer. I hope that was the right decision.

the rest of my packed-with-meetings week along with three different sites' color palletes and logos: pls to lik my nutz

Ms Misery, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 16:21 (eighteen years ago)

This is why I like Sam: she has her priorities straight.

Best of luck with the family situation... it sounds a bit complicated.

Sara R-C, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 16:42 (eighteen years ago)

I'm sorry to hear it, sugar - hope everything goes well. xxx

luna, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 16:48 (eighteen years ago)

I'm sorry to kill thread with my DEPRESSING-NESS

I'm about to go have a lovely lunch with my friend. and then I really need to finish one thing that can be reviewed in my abesence at a mtg tomorrow. when I get back from lunch I should focus on this rather than putzing around ILx. I could leave early to pack and maybe even clean the bathroom to make my boy happy. :)

why am I such a lazy, distractable dummy?

Ms Misery, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 18:11 (eighteen years ago)

You are not a lazy, distractable dummy! Just human, like the rest of us.

Good luck with all your tasks! I have no hope of accomplishing anything today since my son is still home from school - still with the fever thing. The downside to giving him children's Motrin is that he feels fine and therefore keeps squabbling with his sister. Argh!

Sara R-C, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 18:14 (eighteen years ago)

why am I such a lazy, distractable dummy?

Welcome to my life!

Sam, you're totally normal. Don't worry about it. And stress makes everything worse, so just keep that in mind.

molly mummenschanz, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 18:17 (eighteen years ago)

phew, minimal work done and I'm off.

I'm sure I will be popping in and out over the next couple of days since where I go, so does laptop. (and surely wifi is readily available even in Waco, TX these days).

Have a lovely afternoon folx.

Ms Misery, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 20:40 (eighteen years ago)

Hang in there, Sam!

Sara R-C, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 20:41 (eighteen years ago)

All my best, Sam.

Michael White, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 20:43 (eighteen years ago)

After trying to coax Stella out from underneath the couch, my bloody, scratched hands and I give up. Any advice on coaxing an extremely stubborn and angry cat out so she can take her medicine is appreciated.

molly mummenschanz, Thursday, 1 March 2007 05:30 (eighteen years ago)

Gloves + broom handle. No time for subtlety.

Rock Hardy, Thursday, 1 March 2007 06:02 (eighteen years ago)

You're totally right. Ben helped me wrangle her out this morning. I think I'm going to separate her from the other cats, as she'll have less places to hide, and the other two bozos (cats) won't get sick. I heard Biff sneeze twice. My house is infected! Also, my hands are a total mess today and they HURT.

On a different note, it's officially spring here, as the tornado warnings are out in full effect.

molly mummenschanz, Thursday, 1 March 2007 16:00 (eighteen years ago)

I really feel for you with trying to pill the cat. I could never manage with either of ours. Good that you had some help with it this morning!

It must be bad weather day; another snowstorm in southern MN, complete with a snow day. Just when Alex was well enough to send back to school...

Sara R-C, Thursday, 1 March 2007 16:05 (eighteen years ago)

I'm at home again. My aunt is on her way home (it worries me that they've let her out so soon). She's angry and doesn't want me to take time off from work just for her (too late). I'm waiting for her to get home and call me to see what to do. Maybe she can come here for a few days like she was supposed to.

Ms Misery, Thursday, 1 March 2007 16:07 (eighteen years ago)

We have to hydrate a very old cat who used to be the best patient ever (or at least easily bribed) but even though he feels so much better afterwards, he's getting less and less cooperative. :(

Michael White, Thursday, 1 March 2007 16:08 (eighteen years ago)

forcing cats to do anything is indeed bad.

Ms Misery, Thursday, 1 March 2007 17:16 (eighteen years ago)

How's everything going, Sam?

Michael White, Thursday, 1 March 2007 17:19 (eighteen years ago)

things are good. am home and tired. I brought my aunt back to austin with me for a few days. we just back from having mexican. I'm beat and ready for bed.

Ms Misery, Saturday, 3 March 2007 02:25 (eighteen years ago)

good morning , good morning.

monday back in the office after being gone, ugh. Massacre in mailbox, not too bad. *sigh*

How was everyone's weekend?

Ms Misery, Monday, 5 March 2007 14:23 (eighteen years ago)

It was OK. Watched some good futbol games and the weather was nice. Had dinner with Ned on Saturday before he flew out to London.

Michael White, Monday, 5 March 2007 15:38 (eighteen years ago)

I want to have dinner with ned. :(

we went to a wedding that was really, really nice. the rest of the weekend was taken up with family business (for me) and cabinetry (for g.). Amazingly, we have some cabinets in now!

I've never been so tired on a monday or felt so buried. ugh.

Ms Misery, Monday, 5 March 2007 15:54 (eighteen years ago)

Yay, on the new cabinets.

Sorry about the fatigue and feeling buried. I hope your aunt is feeling better.

Michael White, Monday, 5 March 2007 15:56 (eighteen years ago)

She is okay. I think. She's stubborn and is mostly embarrassed. But I did my best to talk to her about how nothing is wrong with needing help and how she must learn to ask for it instead of waiting until it's too late. Now I think, for me, it's just going to be about making sure I call her regularly to keep tabs on her and help make sure she follows up with therapy,e tc. You are really limited in how much support you can give people. and it's frustrating b/c I always want to fix my loved ones' problems. But you can't.

work. . .ugh. Most of the time I love having so many different clients b/c it keeps me from getting bored. But when returning to dozens of mails from each of those different clients makes it hard for my ADHD brane to priortize.

what's the march weather like on the left coast?

Ms Misery, Monday, 5 March 2007 16:04 (eighteen years ago)

It rained most of last week and even hailed twice but Saturday it was sunny in the mid 60's and Sunday mostly the same but a little more cloudy.

Michael White, Monday, 5 March 2007 16:15 (eighteen years ago)

ugh I'm already ready for lunch. It was cold this morning but is supposed to warm up to the 60s. I bet it's too warm now for my coat and I didn't bring a jacket. boo, I suck at the layering.

I have to go get a new ID at lunch as mine's cracked and the bus won't take it. Such is the tedium of daily life.

Michael, where do you work? I'm sure I know yet I can't remember. I imagine just lounging around drinking fancy cocktails, eating gourmet meals and dressing fabulously all the time.

Ms Misery, Monday, 5 March 2007 16:52 (eighteen years ago)

I babysit investment bankers. There's not one iota of glamour involved, nor fancy cocktails nor gourmet food, and I've frankly been less than sartorially respelendent as of late but I have the layering thing down pat.

Michael White, Monday, 5 March 2007 16:55 (eighteen years ago)

Sam, I'm glad your aunt is doing better - and you're right, you can't solve the problems of other people. (In my experience there is no eradicating the impulse, though.

I want to have dinner with Ned, too! So jealous...

Our weekend here in MN was fine; I walked 10 miles on my treadmill while watching episodes of Buffy (silly, but it works for the treadmill), worked on my test some, and did laundry. Had friends over yesterday for drinks, cupcakes, and takeout pizza. Their kids played with our kids, so it was very fun.

Sara R-C, Monday, 5 March 2007 16:58 (eighteen years ago)

I should say that I had dinner with Ned and his sister and her boyfriend. We had coconut frog, among other things.

Michael White, Monday, 5 March 2007 17:03 (eighteen years ago)

Is coconut frog what it sounds like? Or is it one of those dishes that's name is hiding something (like "Rocky Mountain Oysters")?

Sara R-C, Monday, 5 March 2007 17:04 (eighteen years ago)

It was frog in a coconut/curry sauce with some onion. It was Ok, but mroe exciting for reasons of daring than anything else. Like quail, frog can be a lot of work for little reward, but it was tasty enough.

http://www.yelp.com/biz/Wi2c4gGu2W-QFBSumihRfg

Michael White, Monday, 5 March 2007 17:07 (eighteen years ago)

I don't think I've ever eaten frog! Alligator is all the more adventurous that I've gotten. Coconut frog sounds like it could be pretty good (mmmmm, coconut anything...)

Sara R-C, Monday, 5 March 2007 17:09 (eighteen years ago)

I had frog legs once. they tasted like chicken, predictably.

I walked 10 miles on my treadmill while watching episodes of Buffy

Are you able to lose weight on a treadmill? I have not lost an ounce of weight lately and really can't run or anything. I walk alot during the day but would be happy to walk more at night while watching tv. at least Ihaven't gained more weight but what's here needs to leave.

Ms Misery, Monday, 5 March 2007 17:14 (eighteen years ago)

Hmmmm, weight loss. I've lost a bit, I think, but the trick is when you reach a weight loss plateau to increase your workout somehow. So with a treadmill, I could walk longer, faster, more often, or increase the workout by using the incline feature (I never do that last thing, though). Right now I'm walking 5 miles 3 times a week and twice a week I lift weights using a Kathy Smith exercise video (I've gone from 3 pound weights to 12 since Julia was born). I like to walk more because I can distract myself by watching movies or tv...

The downside of the walking is that it makes me voraciously hungry. I swear that the only weight loss I've seen is due to increased metabolism.

Does any of that help? I have no idea!

Sara R-C, Monday, 5 March 2007 17:53 (eighteen years ago)

I eat sparingly and as wisely as I can but most of my exercise still comes from running off at the mouth and jumping to conclusions.

Actually, it's mostly from walking a lot.

Michael White, Monday, 5 March 2007 17:56 (eighteen years ago)

that sounds right Sara. I should get something for the house so my lazy ass can work out more. I walk about 1.5-2 miles a day but it doesn't seem to be cutting it anymore. I'm also not very good at dieting.

Michael, you definitely live in a walking city. I bet you have great calves.

Lunch is done. ahh, the disappointment.

Ms Misery, Monday, 5 March 2007 18:44 (eighteen years ago)

I'm skinny with spindly legs, so, for example, I only wear shorts when I'm swimming, but I'm wiry enough, I suppose.

What did you have for lunch?

Michael White, Monday, 5 March 2007 18:56 (eighteen years ago)

a pretty yummy chicken taco salad.

lunch is a nice highlight of the work day. but I eat so early that when it's over I have nothing but a long boring afternoon to look forward to.

Ms Misery, Monday, 5 March 2007 18:57 (eighteen years ago)

Still sounds good, though.

Michael White, Monday, 5 March 2007 19:06 (eighteen years ago)

Chicken taco salad sounds good to me, too! I had leftover pizza - not very healthy, but it was good.

I can never make myself eat less, so I always take the "exercise more" route. I do like exercising inside the house. The treadmill I have we got for 50 bucks at a garage sale. It's really loud, but otherwise it works very well and both my husband and I have logged a lot of miles on it.

Sara R-C, Monday, 5 March 2007 19:30 (eighteen years ago)

Hey dudes.

Bad things are happening today, and part of it includes smelling like bad curry. I made one of those "Thai Cuisine" things for lunch and now my hair smells gross.

I'm also updating a library webpage for users. I'm removing "Netscape" and changing it to "Firefox."

Firefox 1.0 was the first one in existence, right? 1.5 came along, but does anyone still have 1.0?

molly mummenschanz, Monday, 5 March 2007 20:08 (eighteen years ago)

My computer tech geek husband says that Firefox 2.0 is available now. I don't think we have a PC version of 1.0, but we might have a Mac version (if that's what you're looking for). Are you trying to make your page backwards compatible or...?

Sara R-C, Monday, 5 March 2007 20:13 (eighteen years ago)

(Oh yeah, and sorry to hear about your hair - I'm sure you're the only one who is noticing that you think you smell like curry!)

Sara R-C, Monday, 5 March 2007 20:14 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, I'm trying to get folks to use Firefox 2.0, but some people may not have downloaded the new browser. I have to make it compatible for everyone. le sigh.

This is the page I'm updating:

http://www.library.vanderbilt.edu/public/accesstips.shtml

I'm not feeling well and my brain isn't functioning.

molly mummenschanz, Monday, 5 March 2007 20:15 (eighteen years ago)

Yikes, I hope you feel better soon. I think everyone is finally healthy at our house again. It won't last.

I have zero insight into Firefox browsers, but copied your message to my husband in case he has some brilliant insight that will help (or he's hiding Firefox 1.0 somewhere; I probably won't know either of those things until later, though...)

Sara R-C, Monday, 5 March 2007 20:21 (eighteen years ago)

what are the standards set by vanderb1lt?

UT sets standards for all the web developers, for example our sites must be compatible with firefox 1.05 and higher. If VU doesn't have their own guidelines published that's probably a safe starting point.
UT guidelines

to make a site usable, and accesible for all users make sure the html is valid and it passes an accesibility check. graphics/design are really secondary (in terms of making sure they look identical across platforms.)

Ms Misery, Monday, 5 March 2007 20:22 (eighteen years ago)

Awwh, thanks Sara! I appreciate it! My web skillz aren't always up to par, but I can somehow limp along. I'm adding download buttons to the page. Big excitement! I just can't find one for IE, but the Firefox button looks nice.

molly mummenschanz, Monday, 5 March 2007 20:23 (eighteen years ago)

Sam, I love you. That's exactly what I need to find out. Unfortunately, though, this means I have to look on various other pages, when I want to nap instead. Our library weblady will clean up whatever I screw up, but I'm supposed to get all the details. I've been making it up as I go along (i.e. "we only support Firefox 1.5 or IE 6.0 or higher" -- totally pulled that out of nowhere).

molly mummenschanz, Monday, 5 March 2007 20:25 (eighteen years ago)

Sam is probably more help than we are, but I'll check with A. anyway - he knows weird stuff about computers, when it's all a bit beyond me...

Sara R-C, Monday, 5 March 2007 20:25 (eighteen years ago)

Coincidentally, the V-Ewe web guidelines page is crap.

molly mummenschanz, Monday, 5 March 2007 20:30 (eighteen years ago)

i am only helpful in that I do websites for all these depts

okay, only a third of them and then random php dealies for the other 2 webmaster's portions. Today though, so little development and too much WRITING. Of POLICIES!! argh, boredom and lack of motivation horror.

Ms Misery, Monday, 5 March 2007 20:32 (eighteen years ago)

Your pages are pretty!

Also, thank you SO MUCH for that UT guidelines link. It is making my day go by much easier. Yay, copy and paste source code!

I think I'll abandon the buttons, as I can't find a proper download one for IE7.

molly mummenschanz, Monday, 5 March 2007 20:35 (eighteen years ago)

that's b/c even they know you shouldn't use it. ;)

Ms Misery, Monday, 5 March 2007 20:37 (eighteen years ago)

Molly, I sent you A's thoughts (such as they were) via your myspace page.

I'm kind of laughing about the IE thing. I still have an old version of IE on my computer... no idea why.

Sara R-C, Monday, 5 March 2007 20:42 (eighteen years ago)

oh my god I am such a procrastinator. . .I was just searching all over for a button for molly. (with no luck.)

I suck.

I wish there was some magic potion I could drink to make me get work done quickly.

Ms Misery, Monday, 5 March 2007 20:51 (eighteen years ago)

Awwh, thanks Sam! I couldn't find one either, so I totally stole right from the UT page regarding downloading the browers.

I'm not sure if y'all have access, but you try looking at the sad page here, if you're so inclined. Also, I don't have access to the style sheet right now, and that's part of the reason why it looks so dumpy.

molly mummenschanz, Monday, 5 March 2007 20:58 (eighteen years ago)

I don't think it looks dumpy at all.

Ms Misery, Monday, 5 March 2007 21:01 (eighteen years ago)

Thanks, Sam!

I'm having blockquote madness! WHERE DOES IT END?

molly mummenschanz, Monday, 5 March 2007 21:07 (eighteen years ago)

hmm, well I don't see any direct quotes on that page so you really shouldn't use blockquote. If you're just using it to make indented text, then create a style to apply to those paragraphs which must be indented.

I know you said you don't have access to the stylesheet right now but if you can modify the header of that page then you could create a style there.

Ms Misery, Monday, 5 March 2007 21:10 (eighteen years ago)

OH NO. Ben just called and he has THE FLU. MY ACHINESS IS EXPLAINED. I AM DISEASED.

I just got hold of the stylesheet!

molly mummenschanz, Monday, 5 March 2007 21:34 (eighteen years ago)

Take some Advil pronto! And yay for the stylesheet!

Sara R-C, Monday, 5 March 2007 21:36 (eighteen years ago)

[Removed Illegal Link] (not entirely updated, though)

molly mummenschanz, Monday, 5 March 2007 21:39 (eighteen years ago)

urgh.

HOT NEW CSS

So achey! Do I stay at work or go to the clinic for a flu test? I don't want to infect people!

molly mummenschanz, Monday, 5 March 2007 21:40 (eighteen years ago)

can they give you something to stop the flu?

Ms Misery, Monday, 5 March 2007 21:41 (eighteen years ago)

Hmmmm, if you're feverish, you should probably go home so as not to infect others. (Regardless of whether it's influenza, no one wants a fever...). I don't know if it's worth going to a clinic to confirm that it's flu or not. A. finally did after being feverish for 12 days and they were like, "yeah, it's influenza; it's a virus, so it will go away on it's own. EVENTUALLY."

Sara R-C, Monday, 5 March 2007 21:42 (eighteen years ago)

I doubt they can give me anything. Ben just stopped in because he was feeling crappy and hit him with the big info: "You have the flu!" He feels like I do, except he's a bit congested. Maybe this explains my 96.9 temperature yesterday? I don't even know what that means?! I don't feel feverish. In fact, I'm sitting at my desk, and I'm freezing.

I think I could tough it out a bit longer, except my neck aches and once again, I don't want to cause a librarian plague.

molly mummenschanz, Monday, 5 March 2007 21:45 (eighteen years ago)

I can't even remember the last time I had a fever or the flu.

DAMMIT why did I say that? ;_;

Ms Misery, Monday, 5 March 2007 21:46 (eighteen years ago)

Talked to the clinic: they want me to come in. ;_;

Thanks for you internets help, ladies! You're the best!

molly mummenschanz, Monday, 5 March 2007 21:56 (eighteen years ago)

Get better Molly and I hope the clinic can do *something* for you!

Sara R-C, Monday, 5 March 2007 21:57 (eighteen years ago)

Just getting over a sinus infection, and the antibiotic makes my mouth taste like grapefruit pith. Tea with honey strips the flavor a bit, but I feel like I'm wandering around looking like I'm tasting something bad.

Craploads of work to do, little desire to do anything. Horribly preoccupied with HOUSE CLOSING AT END OF MONTH!

also, not typing full sentences for no apparent reason. wah, monday afternoon.

patita, Monday, 5 March 2007 22:05 (eighteen years ago)

What is this, a sanitorium?

Michael White, Monday, 5 March 2007 22:11 (eighteen years ago)

hooray! congrats on the house K! where are you? the snooty westside? ;)

Ms Misery, Monday, 5 March 2007 22:16 (eighteen years ago)

Nah, a sanitorium has that lovely ammonia smell and stiffer sheets! I blame my terseness on reviewing zoning code.

I'm going to be an eastsider! The west side is officially too rich for our blood, and we can see a moonlight tower from the back porch! For those of you not in Austin who are wondering what the hell I'm talking about, check this out

patita, Monday, 5 March 2007 22:25 (eighteen years ago)

Wow. I'd never even heard of those.

Michael White, Monday, 5 March 2007 22:35 (eighteen years ago)

xpost
hmm are you nearer to downtown eastside? maybe rosewood area? No moontowers in our neck of the woods but I do love them so. Michael, see Dazed and Confused.

tell me why this weird thing is happening:

Last night, for the second time, we are laying in bed and all of a sudden the shower in our master bath comes on. No other water in the house is running. The tap just turns and the shower is on. WTF?!?! I'm trying not to be spooked and thinking maybe there's some sort of strange pipe pressure thing going on, but I don't know. Has anyone ever heard of something like this?

Ms Misery, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 13:44 (eighteen years ago)

We used to live in a building where the toilets, instead of having their own reservoirs, were all hooked up dirctly to the same line. This was never particularly noteworthy until the day I got a call from my gf who said, "Michael, we have a ghost! The toilet just flushed on its own!" The toilet would simply flush on its own at weird hours and, eventually, we just joked about our ghosts unpredictable bowels.

Michael White, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 14:58 (eighteen years ago)

I just made another thread about this b/c it's freaking me out. But michael we live in a house! nobody's connected to us! argh. I don't want to be spooked in my own bedroom.

Does anyone else's throat burn when you drink soda? I'm afraid I'm burning a hole in my esphogaus with all the diet dr. pepper I drink.

man I'm full of seinfeld questions today.

Ms Misery, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 15:00 (eighteen years ago)

Sam, we're closer to MLK, south of French Place. I have yet to see if the place has phantom showers. Does the water come on full blast? Our plumber (the cranky French dude) told us to keep the thing-that-switches-from-bath-to-shower halfway between bath and shower so no pressure builds and there's no standing water in the pipe. Perhaps this would help?

My next suspect would be the cats ;)

I'm glad you checked out the moonlight towers, Michael. They are pretty crazy things to have around.

patita, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 15:10 (eighteen years ago)

hmm, I'm liking your thinking there, K.

I know the area you are speaking of. Nice.

Ms Misery, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 15:11 (eighteen years ago)

They're well cool, patita.

Sam, for me at least, first comes the question of whether I mind there being ghosts in the house. Are they malevolent? Eccentric? Benign? Water bill concerns aside, maybe they're like the birds in your garden or the varmints under your house? Of course, they could be pests like termites or ants or mice, too. I wouldn't mind having a ghost provided s/he didn't break too much or cause too much of a ruckus.

Michael White, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 15:13 (eighteen years ago)

yeah. . my ex had a ghost and it seemed benign. I think in princple I believe ghosts are possible but in practice, I don't think I believe they are around. Kind of like UFOs

Ms Misery, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 15:15 (eighteen years ago)

That, otoh, is something I find unacceptable. No alien ghosts need apply. Only terrestrian ghosts. The last thing I need is to get up in the middle of the night to pee and see a whole hallway of glowing ectoplasmic tribbles or something.

Michael White, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 15:17 (eighteen years ago)

Though my cats might actually enjoy that.

Michael White, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 15:32 (eighteen years ago)

Good morning all!

Maybe ghosts could be trained to play with your cats and keep them entertained. Eventually you could move them up to feeding the cats and changing their litter... that's the kind of ghost I want.

Sara R-C, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 17:05 (eighteen years ago)

Sara, you are a GENIUS!

Michael White, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 17:05 (eighteen years ago)

we just have the one kitty, Wheezy. And she's pretty mean. She'd probably bite the ghost!

Ms Misery, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 17:05 (eighteen years ago)

Then the ghost would lure her into the bathtub and turn on the shower full blast!

Michael White, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 17:09 (eighteen years ago)

I'm having the weirdest vision of the movie Poltergeist ever. ("Don't move into the light, kitty cat...")

Sara R-C, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 17:13 (eighteen years ago)

Having my cat howling at me spookily from inside the TV doesn't sound all too appealing, I have to say. It's bad enough having a deaf cat that likes to get under the tub (it's a clawfoot) and scream 'cause it's the only way he can hear himself. I'm surprised our neighbors haven't called the SPCA on us. He sounds like he's being tortured.

Michael White, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 17:18 (eighteen years ago)

If a ghost would take care of a cat, maybe it wouldn't mind changing the parrots' water during the day. All that food dunking makes for a strange soup.

My mom hired a series of psychics and ghost communicators to handle a ghost in an old Victorian house in which she had a gift shop. They were able to put the spirit to rest eventually, a woman who'd been stood up at the altar. Supposedly, she would toss things around the rooms and freak out the staff. I guess tossing the baskets around the basket room was her absolute favorite thing.

patita, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 17:18 (eighteen years ago)

When my older son was a newborn we lived in a San Francisco apartment that we were convinced was haunted. Someone had died recently in one of the apts upstairs, and another neighbor concurred that the building was haunted. A pack of cigarettes was hidden, and the bathroom sink tap came on full blast in the middle of the night. I had a talk with this ghost. "Aren't you supposed to move on?" Phenomena ceased.
I will come exorcise your home, Sam! It's COLD here!

Beth Parker, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 17:19 (eighteen years ago)

michael, your cat is indeed unique.

beth, come help with my garden!

tombot and my aunt have both said things about worn washers and seats. I suspect they are right.

Ms Misery, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 17:22 (eighteen years ago)

Beth embarks on a new career path... I'm looking forward to the day when you get your own tv show to go with it, Beth. That would be awesome! (And you could use the commercial breaks to sell the wares you have created with pictures of the gorgeous stones you pick up...)

Sara R-C, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 17:23 (eighteen years ago)

I WILL STONE YOUR GHOST.

Beth Parker, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 17:24 (eighteen years ago)

Or she'll just get it stoned; your choice.

Sara R-C, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 17:25 (eighteen years ago)

haha, that's all I need is a fridge door opening by itself and food disappearing.

Ms Misery, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 17:27 (eighteen years ago)

See, the ghost could be a diet aid, too! "Safer than Trimspa..."

Sara R-C, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 17:27 (eighteen years ago)

Oh, that was me.

Beth Parker, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 17:27 (eighteen years ago)

"Dude, I'd like totally haunt you and shit, but I have the worst cotton mou... hey do you have any ice cream?"

Michael White, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 17:28 (eighteen years ago)

I just spent lunch playing uno. WITH HELLO KITTY CARDS!

aahh, now back to work. boo.

Ms Misery, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 19:18 (eighteen years ago)

Are there special Hello Kitty Uno rules? We have regular Uno and a "Harry Potter" version. The Harry Potter one has a couple of special variations - not that I can remember what they are...

Sara R-C, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 19:31 (eighteen years ago)

I want the harry potter ones! where did you get them?

there is an extra card in the hello kitty, the love me not, but I never understood the rule so we just toss them out.

I play every Tuesday with a group of people from my old job. I must get the Harry Potter ones. . .

Ms Misery, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 19:35 (eighteen years ago)

I think we got the Harry Potter ones at Target. I'd just look in the games section there (or at a similar type store). If all else fails, there's always Ebay, too.

Sara R-C, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 19:50 (eighteen years ago)

Lunchtime UNO would be so awesome. I don't think I've played it since I was old enough to bail on going to family reunions.

patita, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 20:09 (eighteen years ago)

It is really fun to play; we were just snowed in here and played it with our kids (the four year old we just put on a "team" with her father). We had a great time, actually!

Sara R-C, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 20:11 (eighteen years ago)

When I was in the super-intense programmer training here a couple of years ago I started "game day" to relieve some of the tension in the "bullpen". The 13 or so of us who were in training at the time started with dominos but there were complaints that the math was too hard for code-weary heads. So we moved to uno and it became a weekly thing. Now everyone's out of training but we still have game day and newer trainees are brought in. It's good. gets me away from my desk for awhile.

Ms Misery, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 20:15 (eighteen years ago)

That sounds like fun - plus what a good idea to get some down time for your brains at work. Nice!

Sara R-C, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 20:21 (eighteen years ago)

now if i can just start a lunchtime knitting group. . .

Ms Misery, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 20:22 (eighteen years ago)

I'm envious of anyone who can find one other local person who likes to knit. I know plenty of knitters, but they are all far away! Everyone in my usual social group hates it. I don't think there is even a local group of knitters here, not that I could work that into my school schedule currently. Sigh. Good luck, though; it's a great idea!

Sara R-C, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 20:27 (eighteen years ago)

Should I go to SXSW Interactive? ARgh , never mind. I just told my boss to give my co-worker first shot.

We just got approved for *one* of us to go but it starts FRIDAY. (gee thanks mgmt). I was first pick since my co-worker went last year. One the one hand, I'd like to just for the prof. dev aspect. But on the other, it's all weekend, Mon & Tues and nothing but speeches and panels that would probably put me to sleep. And I missed two days of work last week so am a bit behind.

I hope I don't regret giving my co-worker the chance over me. He's a bit ambitious and I've realized I need to step up my game if I don't want him becoming my boss in a few years.

Ms Misery, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 14:23 (eighteen years ago)

Hmmmm, it doesn't sound very exciting, but if you have the chance sent back to you maybe you should go. (I'm all for going to conferences - you might get something out of them, plus change of pace, getting away from your desk, etc.)

Would you and your co-worker be competing to be each other's bosses?

Sara R-C, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 15:42 (eighteen years ago)

okay looks like I'm going. co-worker through it back on me so I figured, loser, I'm taking it.

I don't know re: bosses. I don't imagine my current one will be here five years from now. My co-worker might not be either as he's younger than me and I think wants to work in an agency. As for myself, as long as I have anything to do it with it my butt's staying right here. And assuming I am here in the future I'd rather be the boss than have some punk telling me what to do.

Ms Misery, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 16:07 (eighteen years ago)

Glad you're going! Can't hurt, might help... and it could even be interesting! (Maybe.)

Sara R-C, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 16:11 (eighteen years ago)

Hey folks. I am back (briefly) from the land of the flu. I'm feeling feverish again, and might need to call it a day at work.

COMPUTER QUESTION ALERT:

Does anyone know if Java has already been enabled in IE 7? Can I just pitch the instructions on how to turn it on on this godforsaken informative webpage?

That being said, would it be helpful if I gave instructions on how to turn it back on if it's been disabled?

molly mummenschanz, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 19:05 (eighteen years ago)

wow. . .what are you using java for? do you mean javascript? Javascript is disabled on the client side so you could provide a warning that it will need to be enabled for the page to work properly (no. 1 reason why javascript should be avoided when at all possible.)

Ms Misery, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 19:09 (eighteen years ago)

Sam, these instructions are a MESS.

It claims you have to have java AND javascript turned on to use some research databases.

Do you know if it's the same for Firefox (needs to be turned on?). THANKS, SAM. YOU'RE AWESOME!

molly mummenschanz, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 19:14 (eighteen years ago)

okay well if it's using an outside app (like something to access a database) then yes, java might be required. (java and javascript are related to each other in no way whatsoever). In that case, provide a link to install a java plugin (https://sdlc4b.sun.com/ECom/EComActionServlet;jsessionid=416A504F8E1482A42024FC8F24167BF3) and advise that JS be enable. (honestly, I wouldn't go into instructions on how to do this. if it is disabled, the user has done this so should be able to turn it back on.) Do you have a link to the page?

Ms Misery, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 19:18 (eighteen years ago)

This is the original

[Removed Illegal Link]

molly mummenschanz, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 19:21 (eighteen years ago)

crap.

what i'm replacing it with:

[Removed Illegal Link]

molly mummenschanz, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 19:22 (eighteen years ago)

why is this illegal!?

http://testpilot.library.vanderbilt.edu/molly/accessmolly.htm

molly mummenschanz, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 19:22 (eighteen years ago)

i think you just aren't doing the tag right? illegal is far more harsh sounding than it really is (maybe "incorrect"?

Hmm, I think what you have on your test page is fine. (small thing, when you're giving instructions either number every set or don't number any. numbers are probably a good thing.)

Ms Misery, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 19:27 (eighteen years ago)

I hope you feel better soon Molly. Flu sucks.

I'm in awe of you computer people and I totally bow before you.

I'm irrationally excited right now because I just taught myself how to use the Nernst equation. I'll never have to actually do this again in my life, but it's good to know that it's possible to learn something from my textbook.

Sara R-C, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 19:28 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, there were numbers there already and I'm just trying to sort it out. My CSS skills = not so hot.

molly mummenschanz, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 19:29 (eighteen years ago)

Sara, what is the Nernst equation!?

molly mummenschanz, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 19:34 (eighteen years ago)

I'm irrationally excited right now because I just taught myself how to use the Nernst equation.

okay i'm in awe as I have no clue what that is. :)

My CSS skills = not so hot.

no worries, this is actually an HTML thing. I'm not sure how you're editing this page (WYSIWYG or straight HTML) so don't know how much control you have. But I peeked at the source and those instructions are being made each line as a <p>. They are actually lists, not paragraphs, and if you code them instead as "<ol><li>First Instruction</li><li>Second instruction</li></ol>" you will automatically get numbers and be semantically correct! hooray!

Also each of those <p> tags is being given a style which is not great. Instead call this:

.lines { color: #3E3535; font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 75%; }

as <div class="lines">, for example, and just put that around the whole section you want it to affect.

With CSS, the goal is to cut down on how much you have to reference presentation elements within the markup and instead think of how each css elements can encompass as many of your needs as possible. (like just styling for p in your CSS and then not having to call anything in your <p> tags.)

I don't know how much time you have for this or how much you want to get into it but I like this site for basics and reference: html dog

sorry about the flu. :(

Ms Misery, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 19:41 (eighteen years ago)

They're not my CSS style sheets, so I can't go an edit them, unfortunately.

Thanks for the tips, Sam. I got a lot of it sorted, but am calling it a day as I'm achey again, and need a nap.

I mainly use Dreamweaver, but have installed a Web Editor extension into Firefox, and do a lot of straight HTML that way.

molly mummenschanz, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 19:50 (eighteen years ago)

The Nernst equation is how you find the resting membrane potential for a particular ion. It looks all scary but it's basically plugging in numbers.

Now if someone could explain to me how to do the osmolarity calculations, my life would be awesome. Oh well, maybe my textbook will shed light on that, too.

Sara R-C, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 19:50 (eighteen years ago)

sorry you're feeling poorly. I'm going to email you, hope that's the right email for you. ;)

Ms Misery, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 19:51 (eighteen years ago)

BTW, it's clear to me that the Nernst equation is a lot easier than computer programming.

Sara R-C, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 19:52 (eighteen years ago)

no way! I really didn't understand what you just said!

(also, to keep any true nerds from frothing at the mouth HTML and CSS don't really count as computer programming. That's more serious stuff like Java and C+. It is indeed hard.)

Ms Misery, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 19:54 (eighteen years ago)

No need to understand what I said (trust me on this). Even if you didn't understand what you were trying to find, you could still do the math because it really turned out to be just plugging the numbers into the equation. (I was just stumbling over order of operations, really).

All of that computer stuff is hard. I can do very basic computer things, including a few html... uh... codes or whatever you call them. Beyond that, I immediately call upon DH for help. (I must say I think marrying a computer tech person was a good move on my part!)

Sara R-C, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 19:58 (eighteen years ago)

I have to go bowling in an hour and I really don't want to. Why am I so anti-social?

Ms Misery, Thursday, 8 March 2007 16:38 (eighteen years ago)

'Cause you suck at bowling? ;)

Michael White, Thursday, 8 March 2007 16:39 (eighteen years ago)

t**t, Thursday, 8 March 2007 16:40 (eighteen years ago)

Sam, are you the kind of person who has to be dragged out kicking and screaming and ends up having a good time or the kind that has to be dragged our kicking and screaming and hangs at the fringes of the group, glowering and uncommunicative?

Michael White, Thursday, 8 March 2007 16:41 (eighteen years ago)

I think so! It's been years. . .

I'd expressed intrest in the departmental leagues here on campus so a friend asked me to sub for her today. Now i'm feeling, meh.

I was feeling much more outgoing last week. I should probably start taking the buspar on an empty stomach again. or it could just be lingering badness for all the issues with my aunt this weekend.

i'm sure bowling will be fun in the end but my dumb anxiety is just making me dread it right now.

Ms Misery, Thursday, 8 March 2007 16:42 (eighteen years ago)

Oh, but bowling is fantastic - I'm jealous!

ENBB, Thursday, 8 March 2007 16:44 (eighteen years ago)

Sam, just think of the awesome footwear you'll have on!

molly mummenschanz, Thursday, 8 March 2007 16:46 (eighteen years ago)

Just go, Sam. You'll either have fun or, at least, be distracted.

Michael White, Thursday, 8 March 2007 16:50 (eighteen years ago)

the footwear worries me. . .

I was agreeing with Michael upthread that I suck.

I am definitely this:

the kind of person who has to be dragged out kicking and screaming and ends up having a good time

It's just dumb anxiety disorder stuff. I dread things even though I know, based on past experience, that it will be fine. I usually have fun with friends (if I can actually relax), meetings always work at well, etc. But the period before these types of things leave me with stomach aches and bad thoughts. ARGH! Tried for months to work on it with my therapist but finally gave into my psychatirist's suggestion of a gentle med. I hope it works. I didn't used to be like this.

(god, I sound like a complete loony. I comfort myself that my issues are not uncommon I just am willing to seek out solutions rather than suffer in neurosis like many other people.)

Ms Misery, Thursday, 8 March 2007 16:52 (eighteen years ago)

finally gave into my psychatirist's suggestion of a gentle med. I hope it works.

Wait, your psychiatrist prescribed BEER?! ;)

Michael White, Thursday, 8 March 2007 16:54 (eighteen years ago)

Jk, Sam. I hope your new med works too. I rarely get anxiety attackes but when I do, no amount of rational thought allays them.

Michael White, Thursday, 8 March 2007 16:57 (eighteen years ago)

You don't sound like a complete loony at all. I have and anxiety disorder as well (GAD) and, while it's much better these days, I can totally indentify with what you're describing. I keep a very low dose prescription of Ativan around for times when I'm very stressed out. I find that I don't use it very often. I think having it there and knowing I could is enough sometime. So, yeah. Go bowling, have fun, then tell us about it later. :-)

ENBB, Thursday, 8 March 2007 17:01 (eighteen years ago)

[i]
Wait, your psychiatrist prescribed BEER?! ;) [/]

I wish. . .but it's really not good to drink beer before meetings.

ahh, ativan. I actually liked klonpin better but my doc won't give it to me anymore. he says it's not a long term solution.

Ms Misery, Thursday, 8 March 2007 17:07 (eighteen years ago)

Huh, I have a friend with GAD who takes Klonapin all the time. Interesting.

But yeah, you don't sound like a complete loony Sam - I hope you go and wind up enjoying yourself...

Sara R-C, Thursday, 8 March 2007 17:11 (eighteen years ago)

I loathe bowling. I will happily go and drink beer, though. (I used to be the one to keep score, but since everywhere does it electronically now, well, I just drink beer. And cheer, I can totally cheer for people, too.)

luna, Thursday, 8 March 2007 19:16 (eighteen years ago)

bowling was awesome. I wish I could do it every week now. I scored a 56 and 67. which I'm told is pretty good for my first time out. whatever. I enjoyed it. and I got a strike!

Ms Misery, Thursday, 8 March 2007 19:18 (eighteen years ago)

Glad you enjoyed it! If you got a strike, that is very good.

You're almost making me want to go bowling. Maybe I'll take the kids. First I want to take them ice skating again.

Sara R-C, Thursday, 8 March 2007 19:29 (eighteen years ago)

I have never been ice skating. . . I really want to go roller-skating! It's hard to get G. to want to do anything that doesn't involve beer though. . .

Ms Misery, Thursday, 8 March 2007 19:31 (eighteen years ago)

I loved roller skating so much as a kid, but it seemed like almost every time I went, I hurt myself somehow, so I just kinda let that one go. Same with ice skating. It's hard to be graceful when you are a clumsy fuck.

luna, Thursday, 8 March 2007 19:32 (eighteen years ago)

btw, Hi luna!

Ms Misery, Thursday, 8 March 2007 19:33 (eighteen years ago)

Hey sugar! How are you?

luna, Thursday, 8 March 2007 19:34 (eighteen years ago)

Ice skating is fun! But I only go to indoor rinks anymore. There's too much wind and weather outside. Indoors the temperature is reasonable. (Also, you can rent those things that help you to not fall if you are klutzy. I get them for the kids. Adults can use them to learn, too.)

I haven't been roller skating for decades. I seriously think it has been, like, 22 years or something!

Sara R-C, Thursday, 8 March 2007 19:36 (eighteen years ago)

i'm good luna, except for a dumb mtg in an hour or so that I'm not quite ready for. I'm so over CSS today, bah. Speaking of. . .where's Molly today? Still flu-ish I guess.

Ms Misery, Thursday, 8 March 2007 19:38 (eighteen years ago)

Rollerskating brings back too many memories of stressful birthday parties, rug burn from the bumpers, and YMCA (the song). That said, I would be game to try it as an adult.

Glad you enjoyed the bowling, Sam! Maybe we should make an excursion to Dart Bowl for beer, enchiladas, and bowling fun?

I spent my lunch hour at the Sustainable Food Center, picking up free seeds! This the best deal: if you promise to give away some of the food you grow, they hook you up with free seeds, organic gardening classes, and a hotline to call if you're overwhelmed. Anyone in/passing through Austin during harvest season had better bring a bag for squash and peas!

patita, Thursday, 8 March 2007 20:02 (eighteen years ago)

I'm totally impressed by anyone who gardens. I have a tendency to plant things and then forget about them, so that at the end of the summer I have a lot of weeds and a few plants.

Patita, I'm jealous of your future vegetables!

Sara R-C, Thursday, 8 March 2007 20:05 (eighteen years ago)

MM - I'm glad that bowling was awesome. Now I want to go.
My inlaws from England are coming to visit for a week starting tonight. Maybe if we get bored and are looking for something to do, we'll take them bowling! It's a suitably American thing to do - I bet they'd love it.

ENBB, Thursday, 8 March 2007 20:13 (eighteen years ago)

I'm resisting the temptation to think that it's a cultural vogue but I can't seem to escape from people talking about bowling over the last several weeks. I always have fun bowling but I am beneath dire at it. That said, I don't believe I've been bowling this century, unless you count bocce or pétanque.

Michael White, Thursday, 8 March 2007 21:45 (eighteen years ago)

I used to love it when I was a kid, but then spent an entire summer bowling and conked myself in the ankle with the ball a couple times and realized nope, this is not the sport for me. Tried again as a teen (but was squeamish and thought "ewww, I don't want to wear these shoes, gross!" oh, what a silly girl I was), then an adult, and yep, still don't like it. I like the beer part, though.

luna, Thursday, 8 March 2007 22:13 (eighteen years ago)

I used to bowl in a league from '87 to '89 (167 average), but the last time I bowled, I grinked my left knee up so bad that I gave it up for good.

Rock Hardy, Thursday, 8 March 2007 22:24 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, I couldn't even think about doing it right now with my knee the way it is. I've switched braces now to a more flexible one, and I go in next week for the consult about surgery, but bowlin' just ain't worth it to me right now.

luna, Thursday, 8 March 2007 22:30 (eighteen years ago)

I would have to have way more serious drugs than ativan to go bowling. The racket alone? Argh. I used to take the kids, and now I'm like one of those chemical-sensitive people. One iota more exposure would be fatal.

Beth Parker, Thursday, 8 March 2007 22:50 (eighteen years ago)

My ideal of bowling is pétanque. Imagine a sun-dappled central square in a small Provençal village around 3:00 on a summer afternoon under the plane and olive trees when the mistral wind comes up from the Mediterranean and stills the thrum of the cicadas. After a couple of pastis (or whatever wets your whistle, pastis is a somewhat acquired taste), you are somehow allowed to join in with the old men playing throwing metal balls into the light blue sky where they fall with a thud and a cloud of dust into the sand nearer or farther from the little red cochonnet (jack). The men are exageratedly disputatious with each other, trying to psych each other out, but polite to you, since you're a newcomer, a guest, and a foreigner, and they cheer you when you throw well and offer encouragement when you don't. Across the square, an olive skinned maiden in a black, polka-dotted dress eyes you, curious as to why a so obviously foreign man should be frequenting the old cranks on the square. Something makes you smile brazenly at her before you take your next turn. From the canyon blows up the smell of dried grass, thyme, and a hint of exhaust from the kids' scooters which buzz by sounding like mosquitoes and from across the square, from a small, dark flat, comes the smell of that evening's daube stew. From the café on the other side of the square explodes a burst of laughter and the sound of glass breaking and a dog barking. You couldn't care less whether you throw well or not and that's exactly why your toss is the best you've ever made.

Michael White, Thursday, 8 March 2007 23:05 (eighteen years ago)

And then the alarm clock goes off, and you have to go to your terrible job, where you can't even watch YouTube.

Beth Parker, Thursday, 8 March 2007 23:11 (eighteen years ago)

Careful, lady, or I'll send you soundfiles of bowling alleys.

Michael White, Thursday, 8 March 2007 23:19 (eighteen years ago)

I have the most disgusting book to catalog. Ack.

Apparently, there's a bowling alley in town with animatronix (those creepy Chucky Cheese mechanical animals that sang songs) and bumper cars. I don't know why I haven't been already.

molly mummenschanz, Thursday, 8 March 2007 23:25 (eighteen years ago)

Which book?

Michael White, Thursday, 8 March 2007 23:27 (eighteen years ago)

Keyword in context index of the Regras Gerays, Breves, & comprehensivas Da Melhor ortografia .... (1666) by Bento Pereyra / &#450;c Toru Maruyama.

It's a page turner!

molly mummenschanz, Thursday, 8 March 2007 23:28 (eighteen years ago)

But why is good spelling disgusting?

Michael White, Thursday, 8 March 2007 23:33 (eighteen years ago)

The contents of the book are a nightmare.

The preface says this: "I hope that this index will be of some help for a historical study of Portuguese orthography as well as for a study of the romanized-Japanese documents compiled by Jesuits in the 16th and 17th centuries."

WHAT SUBJECT HEADINGS TO GIVE?!

molly mummenschanz, Thursday, 8 March 2007 23:38 (eighteen years ago)

Arcana.

Beth Parker, Thursday, 8 March 2007 23:40 (eighteen years ago)

Are you ready for some hot library subject heading action? (what I came up with)

600 10 Pereira, Bento, &#450;d 1605-1681. &#450;t Regras gerays breves, & comprehensivas da melhor orthografia &#450;v Indexes.
650 0 Portuguese language &#450;x Orthography and spelling &#450;x Early works to 1800 &#450;v Indexes.
650 0 Latin language &#450;x Orthography and spelling &#450;x Early works to 1800 &#450;v Indexes.
650 0 Grammar, Comparative and general &#450;x Early works to 1800 &#450;v Indexes.
650 0 Language and languages &#450;x Origin &#450;v Early works to 1800 &#450;v Indexes.
650 0 Language and languages &#450;x Orthography and spelling &#450;v Indexes.

This is my job.

molly mummenschanz, Thursday, 8 March 2007 23:51 (eighteen years ago)

your job sounds alright Molly!

I can't imagine Michael bowling. however, Patita, I think an excursion to the Dart Bowl soon sounds awesome. Maybe to celebrate closing on your house?

Ms Misery, Friday, 9 March 2007 00:56 (eighteen years ago)

argh this morning, my clients! well just the one. I like them a lot and the comm mgr. I deal with directly is very sweet and easy to work with. but she keeps pushing me to work with this student intern they have on design. He sent me one mock up that looked nice but we can't use for a variety of schools. So I know he has some talent but 1. he's not involved in any of the processes and discussions I am to inform the design 2. he doesn't work for us and I'm uncertain how trained he is, if at all, in the accessibility and usability standards we have to design for.

So I don't know what to tell her. first of all I'm not really feeling design by group. I don't know how to create a web design working in tandem with someone and don't really feel inclined to learn. Also I don't feel like it's my job to oversee training her intern in the points I made above. So I don't know what to do or to kindly kill this idea with her.

Also, she sent me this url this morning and said she wanted to do the twirly graphic at top. *bangs head on desk* pls to shoot me? k, thx.

Ms Misery, Friday, 9 March 2007 14:37 (eighteen years ago)

So it's Work Frustrations Friday, huh.

Sara R-C, Friday, 9 March 2007 16:39 (eighteen years ago)

are you being frustrated today sara?

This is unfortunately typical with clients I'm just not sure how to get this one in line, nicely. I would like to maintain a good relationship with them.

I've got a short list of things to do today before I head out to register for SXSWi and stuff. my head's just not here. and i'm thinking of being bad and not eating my lean cuisine for lunch.

i shall never lose weight.

Ms Misery, Friday, 9 March 2007 16:53 (eighteen years ago)

I can't imagine Michael bowling.

Why not?

The only games I really enjoy these days are ping pong and pinball, but I'd love to start playing tennis again, even though I have no serve whatsoever.

Michael White, Friday, 9 March 2007 16:55 (eighteen years ago)

I can't imagine Michael bowling.

Why not?

you're too debonair!

Ms Misery, Friday, 9 March 2007 16:56 (eighteen years ago)

Nope, I'm not frustrated, it just seems like everyone else is! (I will probably be frustrated later, though, by my daughter, so don't be envious).

Bowling does seem too pedestrian for you, Michael. (Apparently I have already constructed a hyper debonair image of you as well. Hmmmm.)

Sara R-C, Friday, 9 March 2007 16:59 (eighteen years ago)

When I come to SF for seafood, we'll have to play some ping pong. I used to have a good game, though I haven't played since college.

Rock Hardy, Friday, 9 March 2007 17:06 (eighteen years ago)

Hello all! It's warm out!

I've done nothing productive today at work, thus far. Hooray!

molly mummenschanz, Friday, 9 March 2007 17:06 (eighteen years ago)

Ladies, I'm never going to be able to live up to this image you have of me. I am (Steady! Steady!) wearing jeans today, for example - hardly debonair.

Michael White, Friday, 9 March 2007 17:08 (eighteen years ago)

Even the very debonair get to have casual Fridays.

Molly - yay for warm weather. Is your flu gone?

Sara R-C, Friday, 9 March 2007 17:11 (eighteen years ago)

Flu is gone. Back still hurts. Hooray for painkillers! They seem to put me in an exceptionally good mood.

molly mummenschanz, Friday, 9 March 2007 17:14 (eighteen years ago)

When I come to SF for seafood, we'll have to play some ping pong. I used to have a good game, though I haven't played since college.

Deal.

Michael White, Friday, 9 March 2007 17:15 (eighteen years ago)

are your jeans dark wash, pressed and starched?

Ms Misery, Friday, 9 March 2007 17:16 (eighteen years ago)

are your jeans dark wash, pressed and starched?

Sheesh, people. First off, that's the farthest thing from debonair possible and secondly the entire point of these dungaree garments all the youfs is wearing is that they are functional, comfortable, and informal, which is code for this is the last wearing these are getting before being tossed in a washing machine.

I may be wearing more jeans in the future since I can't find any bloody trousers that fit me. :(

Michael White, Friday, 9 March 2007 17:21 (eighteen years ago)

well see I'm not debonair so I really don't know what meets the definition. I buy my jeans at target. :(

You should get your trousers custom made.

Ms Misery, Friday, 9 March 2007 17:31 (eighteen years ago)

My gf's dad started wearing jeans again recently and they're always ironed and creased and look outrageously silly.

Are you kidding? If I could afford it, I'd have everything custome made but why can I not find any 32" waist/34" inseam trousers anymore? Has everybody shrunk or are they all circumferentially enhanced?

Michael White, Friday, 9 March 2007 17:35 (eighteen years ago)

I thought my mother was the only person on earth who ironed jeans.

Michael, I'm sorry you can't find your size; that is odd. I have to say, though, that at least men's pants are sized in a rational way. Try being a short woman with a short waist but proportionally longer legs... I should give it up and buy skirts. But it's too cold here!

So glad you're feeling better Molly. Yay painkillers!

Sara R-C, Friday, 9 March 2007 17:47 (eighteen years ago)

my brother irons and starches his jeans, as do many hip-hoppers. (see also cowboys aka shit kickers)

but I imagine the end look is different from your mother's sara.

Ms Misery, Friday, 9 March 2007 17:50 (eighteen years ago)

I was complaining about this to my gf last night (I lost enough weight to go down 2 inches in waist size and my old pants all bunch up at the waist which is both ugly and annoying) and I could swear I saw a flicker pass through her eyes that bespoke of a desire to throw her drink in my face.

The disparity in womens' clothing drives me nuts. What is a 6 or an 8? It depends entirely on the line and the inflationary tendancy means that eventually, every woman on the planet will wear a 0 or a 2.

Michael White, Friday, 9 March 2007 17:52 (eighteen years ago)

M., it sounds like the image is starting to weigh down the man. I think you're due for a day of stock car races (or even better, a mud derby) while getting blind drunk on Beast, wearing cutoff jeans, a pukestained t-shirt and a trucker hat. If that doesn't free you from the prison of expectations, nothing will.

Rock Hardy, Friday, 9 March 2007 17:52 (eighteen years ago)

I second that. A dirt track race with sprint cars is just what the man needs.

molly mummenschanz, Friday, 9 March 2007 17:53 (eighteen years ago)

Not that I'd be caught dead at one of those things; someone else is going to have to take him.

Rock Hardy, Friday, 9 March 2007 17:55 (eighteen years ago)

I will! I *LOVE* the dirt track!

molly mummenschanz, Friday, 9 March 2007 17:56 (eighteen years ago)

Let's not forget a good tractor pull.

luna, Friday, 9 March 2007 18:01 (eighteen years ago)

This revives one's spirit:

molly mummenschanz, Friday, 9 March 2007 18:02 (eighteen years ago)

Years ago, I worked for an ambulance chaser who specialized in motorcycle cases and I had to go to various biker events (I even went to the Oakland Hell's Angels clubhouse, once, and met Sonny Barger) in my black t-shirt with the flames down the sleeves and try to blend in. It was hilarious.

Michael White, Friday, 9 March 2007 18:03 (eighteen years ago)

Please tell me that there are photos of this.

Sara R-C, Friday, 9 March 2007 19:24 (eighteen years ago)

Please tell me that there are photos of this.

Alas, no. Also, most of the witnesses have been disappeared.

Michael White, Friday, 9 March 2007 19:58 (eighteen years ago)

But I'm certain their cement shoes were of the most fashionable variety.

Sara R-C, Friday, 9 March 2007 20:03 (eighteen years ago)

And hand fitted!

Michael White, Friday, 9 March 2007 20:11 (eighteen years ago)

xposts to way back--Sam, celebrating the house closing would be such a good thing. Right now it's just the stress and waiting!

I had a boyfriend who starched and ironed his jeans *and* his hawaiian shirts. this was not the least of his quirks.

Also, this video explains my week so far.

patita, Friday, 9 March 2007 20:45 (eighteen years ago)

I knew someone who ironed his underwear and socks...

luna, Saturday, 10 March 2007 01:02 (eighteen years ago)

Socks?!

Michael White, Saturday, 10 March 2007 02:29 (eighteen years ago)

"Oh dear me, these socks are all...wrinkly!

Michael White, Saturday, 10 March 2007 02:57 (eighteen years ago)

Yup. It was freaky. I mean, what exactly the fuck?

luna, Saturday, 10 March 2007 03:13 (eighteen years ago)

I am in SXSW laughing at all yr geeks and hispters

Ms Misery, Saturday, 10 March 2007 17:19 (eighteen years ago)

With wrinkly socks!

Sara R-C, Saturday, 10 March 2007 17:31 (eighteen years ago)

what cho saying 'bout my socks sara??

Ms Misery, Sunday, 11 March 2007 14:57 (eighteen years ago)

I'm sure yours are fine, Sam. (soothe soothe)

Sara R-C, Sunday, 11 March 2007 15:55 (eighteen years ago)

I'm actually wearing bright pink socks which match my bright pink vans this morning. I would take a picture for you but I stupidly forgot my camera (again). sxsw be offereing plenty of opportunites for funny people watching/picture-taking.

btw sessions. . .bored.

Ms Misery, Sunday, 11 March 2007 15:57 (eighteen years ago)

do you carry a laptop daily? in what? tell me about your computer situ.

Ms Misery, Monday, 12 March 2007 14:15 (eighteen years ago)

There's lots of free hot spots in my neighborhood but one of the reasons I get out of the house is to get AWAY from the computer.

Michael White, Monday, 12 March 2007 14:44 (eighteen years ago)

haha. . .

I really never use the machine at home. But I'm nervous to take it out and about on the bus and stuff. I'm always afraid someone's going to snatch. Walking around downtown with it this morning I was planning my defense of some thug tried to jump me.

Ms Misery, Monday, 12 March 2007 14:47 (eighteen years ago)

I know in my case, it's statistically far more likely that I'll drop it or swing it into a door jamb or that any one of a thousand other gauche gaffes will ocurr than it getting stolen.

Michael White, Monday, 12 March 2007 15:24 (eighteen years ago)

My best friend accidentally tossed her laptop across the room on her way to my house a couple of months ago. (We had just been on vacation together and some photos were stored in her laptop.) Thankfully, another friend was able to get the information off of her hard drive. But still!

I have a laptop for upstairs and a desktop computer downstairs. I am proctoring finals at a local college for the next few days, but probably won't take the laptop with me because it is good to get away from it for a while, and also because I don't want to drop it.

Sara R-C, Monday, 12 March 2007 15:44 (eighteen years ago)

my laptop is well used like my sewing machine (the latter has sharpie marks and ripped off stickers all over it.) The laptops is scratched, banged, has a lose case, a wobbly monitor and filthy keyboard. I'm rough to my electronics. They are to me like hammers and wrenches to a handyman.

Ms Misery, Monday, 12 March 2007 16:05 (eighteen years ago)

okay i'm in a panel and one of the presentors is speaking to us via second life. and his avatar is a woman. wtf??

Ms Misery, Monday, 12 March 2007 17:03 (eighteen years ago)

That is really funny, actually. (Everything about that is kind of amusing/weird. I tried out the Second Life thing but really don't get the appeal.)

Sara R-C, Monday, 12 March 2007 17:06 (eighteen years ago)

I did too, and ditto (and my avatar was a woman too, why the hell not. I was cute!)

Mark C, Monday, 12 March 2007 17:07 (eighteen years ago)

It's one thing to have your avatar be a woman for your own private amusement; I just think it's a little bizarre to represent yourself that way in a panel discussion.

Sara R-C, Monday, 12 March 2007 17:09 (eighteen years ago)

yeah my wtf is more to the presentation via second life rather than avatar. at least he's not a giant cat or something.

Ms Misery, Monday, 12 March 2007 17:10 (eighteen years ago)

My friend's avatar is Ronald McDonald.

molly mummenschanz, Monday, 12 March 2007 17:10 (eighteen years ago)

That is hysterical. There must be a lot to Second Life that is more interesting than I think it is. My first life is more interesting than I found Second Life, and that is not saying much.

Sara R-C, Monday, 12 March 2007 17:12 (eighteen years ago)

I am frightened by Second Life (don't even get me started on 2nd life in libraries).

He tried to build a McDonald's and charge people actual money for cheeseburgers. I don't know if it worked.

When he was showing me 2nd life, I tried to make him talk to random dudes who were wandering around. He says it's scary to talk to others.

molly mummenschanz, Monday, 12 March 2007 17:13 (eighteen years ago)

Haha!!

Mark C, Monday, 12 March 2007 17:15 (eighteen years ago)

You should ask him if it worked with the cheeseburgers!

One of the few times I was at Second Life, I made my avatar read a book. Okay, it's boring to watch a pretend person read a pretend book. Way more interesting to read an actual book myself! Maybe it's just me.

The only person I talked to was a real-life acquaintance. But I can just send her an email if I want to talk to her.

Sara R-C, Monday, 12 March 2007 17:15 (eighteen years ago)

I got chatted up by a bald man who sent me pictures of his real-life self - lots of muscles - and he asked me to go for a ride in his Nissan.

Mark C, Monday, 12 March 2007 17:18 (eighteen years ago)

I remember some burly dudes tried to beat him up, but an elf was really friendly to him. "Nice avatar, dude."

Ok, so 2nd life in libraries: WHY WOULD YOU WANT TO GO TO A VIRTUAL LIBRARY TO READ A VIRTUAL BOOK WHEN YOU CAN DO THAT FOR REALZ?

molly mummenschanz, Monday, 12 March 2007 17:20 (eighteen years ago)

I tried to make him talk to random dudes who were wandering around. He says it's scary to talk to others.

good to know that virtual reality imitates real life so well. I tried second life once and never got off the island where you dressed yourself. my avatar kept walking around with missing limbs bumping into other people's torsos.

rumbling stomach - off to lunch.

my bosses have paid a few hundred dollars for me to be out of the office, sitting in a conference and posting on ilx. i love it.

Ms Misery, Monday, 12 March 2007 17:20 (eighteen years ago)

ha ha ha - wow. I can't decide if that is hilarious or terrifying.

Sara R-C, Monday, 12 March 2007 17:21 (eighteen years ago)

Second Life creeps me out.

Michael White, Monday, 12 March 2007 17:24 (eighteen years ago)

Molly, maybe 2nd life libraries have better books than the real libraries of wherever that person lives!

argh, bbq lunch did me in. my poor tummy.

Ms Misery, Monday, 12 March 2007 18:33 (eighteen years ago)

The whole idea of it hurts my brain! They even wanted Second Life catalogers to catalog VIRTUAL 2nD LIFE BOOKS. DOES NOT COMPUTE.

molly mummenschanz, Monday, 12 March 2007 18:37 (eighteen years ago)

That might make sense if there were actual books. It's the notion of virtual books that mystifies me.

Sara R-C, Monday, 12 March 2007 18:44 (eighteen years ago)

do you actually get to read them (you the meatbag behind the keyboard) or does your avatar just sit there, flip pages and tap their foot?

Ms Misery, Monday, 12 March 2007 18:47 (eighteen years ago)

The avatar was just lying there, flipping pages. By a pool! I was a bit envious of the idea of reading by a pool because it was January, but since so far as I could tell she was reading a blank book, it seemed kind of uninteresting.

Hmmmm, maybe librarians could help somehow, by giving the avatars books with words or at least pictures.

Sara R-C, Monday, 12 March 2007 18:56 (eighteen years ago)

seems like purveyors of e-books are missing a huge opp here.

Ms Misery, Monday, 12 March 2007 18:58 (eighteen years ago)

Maybe there are books there that you can actually read? I don't know - I only ran across the one. But yeah - you're right; e-books might sell briskly. (Think of all the avatars that must be educated!)

Sara R-C, Monday, 12 March 2007 19:01 (eighteen years ago)

The whole e-books thing didn't take off as planned in the first place (could cite articles, if my brain were functioning properly).

I just can't wrap my head around it. But to actually go into a 2nd Life library, to use a computer -- it's META computer using! It doesn't make sense!

molly mummenschanz, Monday, 12 March 2007 19:04 (eighteen years ago)

this guy from IFC keeps talking about how they don't accept "films" from people that are (actual examples given) elephants eating each others' asses, cats jumping on trampolines, kids kicking each other in the balls. Sounds like some filmmaker is jealous of youtube. . .

Ms Misery, Monday, 12 March 2007 19:09 (eighteen years ago)

Molly, my husband actually does read e-books! On his Palm or whatever his current PDA is. I think he's the only person I know who does this.

Sara R-C, Monday, 12 March 2007 19:12 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, for PDAs they're good! But, for screens vs. actual books, not so much.

I've totally polluted this thread with my librarianism. I should stop.

molly mummenschanz, Monday, 12 March 2007 19:13 (eighteen years ago)

Yes, if there's anything I hate, it's a librarian. Oh wait...

(seriously, you can never get enough librarian talk. Just because I quit library school doesn't mean that I don't worship librarians!)

Sara R-C, Monday, 12 March 2007 19:21 (eighteen years ago)

what about geek talks?

Ms Misery, Monday, 12 March 2007 19:51 (eighteen years ago)

what about geek talk?

Ms Misery, Monday, 12 March 2007 19:52 (eighteen years ago)

I am about to leave to go to a forum on BLOGGING. Like, what it is, etc.

KILL ME NOW.

molly mummenschanz, Monday, 12 March 2007 19:52 (eighteen years ago)

not interested? too simple?

I'm trying to work on my blog now in downtown. i need to start writing regularly again.

Ms Misery, Monday, 12 March 2007 20:01 (eighteen years ago)

Geek talk is always good. That's why I married a geek! (Well, that and the free tech help. Also, he's a better cook than me...)

Sara R-C, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 02:53 (eighteen years ago)

tyra Banks is interviewing prostitutes. such is the glory of a sick day.

Ms Misery, Wednesday, 14 March 2007 15:19 (eighteen years ago)

What ails you, Sam?

Michael White, Wednesday, 14 March 2007 15:20 (eighteen years ago)

geek flu

(or dumb dogs waking me up in the night and not letting me get back to sleep)

Ms Misery, Wednesday, 14 March 2007 15:25 (eighteen years ago)

Ah. Substitute 'cats' for dogs and I know precisely what you mean.

Michael White, Wednesday, 14 March 2007 15:26 (eighteen years ago)

Hope you feel better rested soon, Sam!

(Our kids and our cats do this to us... very aggravating...)

Sara R-C, Wednesday, 14 March 2007 15:31 (eighteen years ago)

Sara, you need to get your kids to feed the cats, then the cats will start waking up the kids, the kids will be tired and they won't wake you up.

Michael White, Wednesday, 14 March 2007 15:31 (eighteen years ago)

I'm glad I read that before bed time; I think this clever plan could work...

Sara R-C, Wednesday, 14 March 2007 23:47 (eighteen years ago)

tyra Banks is interviewing prostitutes.
I can't think of anythng I'd rather watch when sick. I feel a fever coming on.

Beth Parker, Thursday, 15 March 2007 00:13 (eighteen years ago)

she went from high-class escorts who average $3k a week down to a street hooker from chicago who would turn a trick for $15 if she was really hungry. that last one was downright depressing and made me cry a bit. :(

back at work ugh. G is taking off from work early to go see free sxsw stuff. jealous. maybe i'll do so tomorrow.

Michael I had a very long complicated dream that you featured in last night. You were a writer somewhere here on campus. You lived in Big Bend and took the bus in for work every day (impressive). You were helping me find the right manual to change a gasket on my (completely dream) car and then gave me a couple of cashmere sweaters you and your wife had brought back from France. strange.

Ms Misery, Thursday, 15 March 2007 13:57 (eighteen years ago)

My mechanic always gives me cashmere.

Beth Parker, Thursday, 15 March 2007 16:11 (eighteen years ago)

I would expect nothing less of Beth Parker's mechanic.

Sara R-C, Thursday, 15 March 2007 17:08 (eighteen years ago)

this afternoon I have come to the realization that my increasing agiatedness, racing thoughts, sleeplessness and irritability aren't just due to a currently busy life but a manic episode. I had my last lithium check a month ago and my doctor was concerned b/c my levels were low. he wanted to raise it but I said no mainly b/c the lamictal has really been helping my depression and I didn't want to f with it. I told him I wasn't experiencing any issues and he said we could discuss it at my next appt.

I was wrong.

I don't get manic very often so it's harder for me to notice it compared to depression. also scarier b/c of it's strangeness and how out of control I can get. for the last week I've been so quick to anger that I'm surprised I haven't ground all my teeth down to the gums. Also last night I nearly punched out a bouncer and got in a fight with my brother in the middle of the street and basically told him and his friends to fuck off. :(

I fucking hate this. hate it hate it hate it.

I'm calling my dr first thing in the morning to see if he can start increasing the lithium but in the meantime I just feel really bad and scared. I hate feeling that my emotions and moods are controlling me rather than the other way around. I also hate not knowing how to explain my actions to others without sounding like a neurotic basketcase (like my mother.)

and g. is off shooting a film with someone all day today. this sucks. :(

Ms Misery, Sunday, 18 March 2007 20:20 (eighteen years ago)

I'm sorry that's been happening, Sam.

I just wanted to say that, as much as I'd love to even just participate on this one thread, my days of participating on anything here at ILX are over. I just can't either make myself or summon enough courage to do any posting here, and half the time I don't feel like there's any place for me here anyway, so why bother? I have met some really good people off this thing, but I just can't see myself sticking around anymore. I might continue reading if I've got enough time, but I won't be able to do anything beyond that. I've actually been doing that for awhile, but wanted this message to serve as a sort of tying up of loose ends and a final goodbye, because I believe in those sorts of things. It's been, well.

Phoenix (has stopped) Dancing, Monday, 19 March 2007 00:14 (eighteen years ago)

:(

well dee, I hope you'll always feel welcome to post on this thread when you see it. like always, this board comes and goes in terms of usefulness. I'd still like to hear from you.

Ms Misery, Monday, 19 March 2007 02:44 (eighteen years ago)

Sam, I hope you are feeling better. That sounds really frustrating.

Phoenix - I hate to say good bye to someone I've not even met... :(

Sara R-C, Monday, 19 March 2007 04:08 (eighteen years ago)

yes sorry for the emotional vomit yesterday. i feel better today. a little klonpin, crying and hugging on boyfriend and a goodnight's sleep. and good email exchange with brother. Now I just need to get in touch w/my doctor for a dosage increase and all will be well.

Ms Misery, Monday, 19 March 2007 13:16 (eighteen years ago)

Not to worry; so glad you feel better today!

Sara R-C, Monday, 19 March 2007 13:18 (eighteen years ago)

alright, I finally made my blog look acceptable and am going to get back in the habit. writing must become a priority for me again:

hit me up with your blog for linkage

Ms Misery, Monday, 19 March 2007 15:21 (eighteen years ago)

Mine's still the same boring http://lunacee.livejournal.com/

I'm glad you're feeling better, chica.

Dee, I'm really sorry to hear it, but I can't say that I don't understand.

luna, Monday, 19 March 2007 16:47 (eighteen years ago)

What has happened to Michael?

Ms Misery, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 13:47 (eighteen years ago)

Guessing from his blog, he's in Austria.

WilliamC, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 19:50 (eighteen years ago)

I think I am missing his blog. . .although I do know remember the trip being mentioned.

Ms Misery, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 20:05 (eighteen years ago)

Austria sounds fun.

My blog (such as it is) is at myspace and is laaaaame.

Sara R-C, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 20:26 (eighteen years ago)

They're in Vienna now, iirc, heading off to Prague, and will be back on Saturday.

luna, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 21:07 (eighteen years ago)

what's his blog?

man, lunch is an hour away and I'm BORED. I"m meeting my friend and then doing a bit of shopping and I want to go now. my head is so not into what needs to be done.

Ms Misery, Wednesday, 21 March 2007 15:18 (eighteen years ago)

amen to that, Sam.

patita, Wednesday, 21 March 2007 15:20 (eighteen years ago)

An email this morning from M.:

I cannot seem to log on to ILX and I don't have enough time to fiddle with it. If you're so inclined, tell TITTWIS, and tell them I send them my best from a very cold but gorgeous Prague.

luna, Wednesday, 21 March 2007 18:54 (eighteen years ago)

aww, tell him thanks for the thoughts.

Ms Misery, Wednesday, 21 March 2007 18:59 (eighteen years ago)

That is really nice!

Sara R-C, Wednesday, 21 March 2007 19:03 (eighteen years ago)

ILx is boring today!!! Someone start a good thread.

Ms Misery, Thursday, 22 March 2007 16:58 (eighteen years ago)

not too good a thread, I have a lot of boring work to do ;)

patita, Thursday, 22 March 2007 18:09 (eighteen years ago)

me too. :(

Ms Misery, Thursday, 22 March 2007 18:10 (eighteen years ago)

I should be making pumpkin bread; I want to have something good and soft to eat for my son when he comes home, as he's having two baby teeth extracted this afternoon.

Sara R-C, Thursday, 22 March 2007 18:12 (eighteen years ago)

sara you are a good mom.

Ms Misery, Friday, 23 March 2007 13:04 (eighteen years ago)

Nah, I just wanted to do something nice for him because he's never even had a filling before. He was okay - a few tears when he got home, but he was excited about the pumpkin bread and the Netflix movie (Madagascar) that I had waiting.

The teeth themselves have insanely long roots! The tooth fairy left him 3 bucks (and then didn't throw the teeth out because they are so amazingly long).

Sara R-C, Friday, 23 March 2007 13:15 (eighteen years ago)

weird, typically baby teeth barely have any roots right?

Ms Misery, Friday, 23 March 2007 14:22 (eighteen years ago)

Right. I assume it is a genetic thing, since my teeth also grow "really long roots" (as per my dentist, when insisting I have my impacted wisdown teeth out when I was 17 years old). They are pretty impressive little teeth!

Sara R-C, Friday, 23 March 2007 15:58 (eighteen years ago)

Sam, Michael's LJ is http://mwwhitesf.livejournal.com/

luna, Friday, 23 March 2007 17:05 (eighteen years ago)

Sorry I didn't say 'hi' before but I couldn't log in.

Michael White, Sunday, 25 March 2007 06:40 (eighteen years ago)

Hi Michael! Hope your vacation was good. . .

http://mwwhitesf.livejournal.com/

i'm in yr blog, readin' yr posts.

I must post today as I"m determined not to let dust coat my blog again. I set my alarm at five this morning as I planned to walk the dogs then write (on my book, not blog) but I just couldn't do it. had a really hard time getting to sleep last night. :(

now I have a headache which I think is caffiene-related. i've barely had any Diet Dr. Peppers lately as soda's been causing me issues and it's too hot for coffee. . .what to do?

Ms Misery, Monday, 26 March 2007 13:20 (eighteen years ago)

Iced coffee?

Michael White, Monday, 26 March 2007 14:28 (eighteen years ago)

Iced coffee? Sorry to hear you have caffeine intake issues.

I may be headed to bed with @#$%^&* allergies. I'm too congested to swear properly.

patita, Monday, 26 March 2007 14:28 (eighteen years ago)

Vacations make me realize that I may be allergic to work.

Michael White, Monday, 26 March 2007 14:37 (eighteen years ago)

Welcome back Michael!

Sam, dropping caffeine suddenly does suck. Maybe some iced tea?

Sara R-C, Monday, 26 March 2007 15:22 (eighteen years ago)

Thanks, Sara.

Michael White, Monday, 26 March 2007 15:39 (eighteen years ago)

I'm actually thinking about bringing in a thermos of iced tea each day. I did have a blended ice coffee earlier which is nice but kind of $$ for every day.

do you have pics up on yr flickr michael?

Ms Misery, Monday, 26 March 2007 16:27 (eighteen years ago)

Yup.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/29968945@N00/sets/72157600025272578/

Michael White, Monday, 26 March 2007 17:05 (eighteen years ago)

I love that you took pictures of kitties in prague.

I drank a dr pepper just now and it was okay. this weekend it was burning my throat and making me feel yucky. I think it's an acid reflux this weekend and I just need to limit them.

I'm betting that our meal Sat. night did not help. Some HS friends of G's were in from Philly so we all went to the Salt Lick for BBQ. It looked like this:

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y97/aeshannon/meat.jpg

it's all you can eat, plate after plate of pork ribs, sausage and brisket. and it's byob so we had a cooler full of beer too. I might have ate an entire animal. ugh. but also, yum.

Ms Misery, Monday, 26 March 2007 17:15 (eighteen years ago)

The cats just happened to be on my camera when I uploaded them on Saturday, Sam. Those are my cats, Ava and Benchley.

That bbq looks so good! Check out the pig knuckle photo from Prague on my flickr. It's a traditional Czech dish so we had to try it. We had it for lunch and, somehow, I never got hungry for dinner.

Michael White, Monday, 26 March 2007 17:21 (eighteen years ago)

was it fatty? gristly? also where do you go this summer (greece? rome?) where you *did* take pics of a local kitty?

Ms Misery, Monday, 26 March 2007 17:21 (eighteen years ago)

It was tender, fatty, gristly (though I didn't eat that) and also there was loads of crackling. I don't like sweet mustards (which the Czechs favor, apparently) but the horesradish was delicious.

I'm not sure, Sam. What photos?

Michael White, Monday, 26 March 2007 17:28 (eighteen years ago)

It is thursday, let us rejoice. How have your weeks been?

(Michael, I should dig back through yr Flickr photos to be sure I'm not just insane.)

I made a purse from scratch last night and it looks pretty good. no pictures yet as I'm going to remake it for a gift and I don't like to post pics of gifts online before I give them.

Ms Misery, Thursday, 29 March 2007 13:11 (eighteen years ago)

Weird. Coming back to work feels surreal, somehow.

Upon reflection, I think you must mean the photos I took of cats in Egypt last spring, Sam.

Somehow I never managed to take a photo of the little slut cat that followed me around a quiet, leafy intersection in the Garden City neighborhood behind our hotel even though I went back twice to see her. It was a little dispiriting not to meet a single one in either Vienna or Prague.

What did you make the purse from?

Michael White, Thursday, 29 March 2007 14:18 (eighteen years ago)

those are the kitties! oh that poor little black guy sleeping on the trash. :( You should have snuck him away in your luggage. (slut cat?)

re: purse. Out of fabric! I sewed it although I'm not entirely pleased with the handles. I'm gifting a couple of friends with them so each one shall have slight improvements. With this purse design and my knitted kufis, I'm trying to create some original things I might actually be able to sell.

I've also come up with my own design for coin purses/clutches to make for a couple of other friends and a scarf for my London ex-pat friend that I'd like to try to submit to some knitting online magazines if it comes out right. Too many projects, not enough time. Damn work.

Ms Misery, Thursday, 29 March 2007 14:24 (eighteen years ago)

Those kitties in the Bazaar were stand-offish but the little runt slut brazenly came up to me and got up on her hind paws to rub her cheek against my outstretched hand when I first met her. I knelt down to pet her for a few minutes and when I stood back up and said "goodbye" to her, she followed me to the other side of the street. I crossed again (so I was now kitty-corner, ha ha, from where I had met her) and she still followed me, purring loudly and I had to relent when she jumped up on the concrete foundation of the wrought iron fence of an embassy there. I pet her for about ten minutes and then reluctantly left and she followed me halfway down the block before giving up. The next day I came back again in the early morning with some basturma (kind of like pastrami) wrapped in a napkin in the hopes of seeing her and she was there at the embassy. The evil Egyptian policemen chased her away by throwing water at her from a glass but I pet her and bribed her with treats and, street cat that she was, she seemed to take it all in stride. That evening before dinner I dragged my gf there and the cat came running up to greet us.

Too many projects, not enough time. Damn work.

I feel your pain.

What's a kufi?

Michael White, Thursday, 29 March 2007 14:52 (eighteen years ago)

you should've definitely taken that cat home.

kufis are the African/Muslim skull caps. fairly easy to make and customize. I've been commissioned for some and am thinking maybe I could sell them as a little bit o' bizness.

Ms Misery, Thursday, 29 March 2007 15:51 (eighteen years ago)

Her passport was expired. :(

Michael White, Thursday, 29 March 2007 16:09 (eighteen years ago)

I bought someone a kufi once in Marrakech.

Michael White, Thursday, 29 March 2007 16:21 (eighteen years ago)

Sam, you are very motivated with your projects.

I love the kitty photos... too bad they had to stay behind.

My week is going okay; I've got another take home test to do (blah). BUT my husband and kids are gone to Wisconsin and I'm having my first kid-free days in almost nine years. I miss them... but it is really great to be able to put something away and not have something else immediately fill the space. (Yes, I am old; I'm getting exciting about neatness.)

Sara R-C, Thursday, 29 March 2007 16:22 (eighteen years ago)

Enjoy, Sara.

Michael White, Thursday, 29 March 2007 16:26 (eighteen years ago)

Thanks; I am! I don't think I'd want to live alone for more than a few days, but the novelty is enjoyable.

Sara R-C, Thursday, 29 March 2007 16:52 (eighteen years ago)

Pre-closing walkthrough on the house today!

Sara, a (neat) house to yourself is fun no matter what your age :)
Sam: celebratory enchiladas and bowling soon?
Michael, I know a guy who travels all over the world for business and always takes in some kind of stray animal. When he can't keep them in the house, he buys kibble or treats and feeds them. The last critters he befriended were some Chinese water dragons! He gives a local a stipend to care for the critters once he's on to the next job.

patita, Thursday, 29 March 2007 17:07 (eighteen years ago)

the alone time sounds awesome sara. how many hours are you taking right now?

congrats on the house K! def. celebratory enchiladas soon.

Ms Misery, Thursday, 29 March 2007 17:13 (eighteen years ago)

Patita, my house might not qualify as neat yet, and maybe it never will, but it's just nice to have the fight against entropy be a little easier for a few days! The guy you know who takes in the animals sounds super nice. Chinese water dragons! I don't even know what those are.

Sam, I'm just taking physiology right now, so 4 credits. In mid April I'll start two other 4 credit classes (sociology and a philosophy class), both four credits, but at least no lab work involved. The hard part will be the month or so where the physiology class overlaps... I'm not done with it until May 15.

Okay, I'm going to Hastings today; I will report back if I survive. ;)

Sara R-C, Thursday, 29 March 2007 17:17 (eighteen years ago)

Congrats, patita. Your friend sounds like a decent chap.

don't you hate it when you really don't feel like working but can't think of any ways to waste time?

Ms Misery, Thursday, 29 March 2007 17:45 (eighteen years ago)

I always seem to manage to find ways to waste time.

Michael White, Thursday, 29 March 2007 18:00 (eighteen years ago)

I have found the cure for not figuring out how to waste time at work. . .GOING HOME EARLY!

I went home early yesterday (although I then did some work there) and I plan on leaving around lunch today.

We are in for big storms here - tornados, hail, etc.. Don't want to be caught on the bus in that!

Ms Misery, Friday, 30 March 2007 14:52 (eighteen years ago)

Tornados AND hail! What is that, some kind of biblical punishment?

Michael White, Friday, 30 March 2007 15:01 (eighteen years ago)

It is Texas in springtime.

Ms Misery, Friday, 30 March 2007 15:04 (eighteen years ago)

Minnesota only gets that kind of weather in the summer. (Which is fine by me; I'd rather avoid it if possible, of course.)

I'm always entertained by views of weather I've heard from San Franciscans. My friend J3f's partner is from there and he only visited us in MN one time. I vividly recally him saying, "There is snow in this PARKING LOT" in a tone of total disbelief.

Of course, I'm terrified of earthquakes...

The microclimate(s) of SF are a little hilarious. It averages 50 degrees here or thereabouts. It's rarely warm here but rarely cold, either.

Michael White, Friday, 30 March 2007 15:56 (eighteen years ago)

*sigh* how I wish I could live in San Francisco.

Ms Misery, Friday, 30 March 2007 15:57 (eighteen years ago)

The night it snowed in Prague was exciting since to me, snow is a mountains thing. I've only seen snow in a city twice, though it DID hail in SF about a month ago but only for about 5 minutes.

Michael White, Friday, 30 March 2007 16:00 (eighteen years ago)

I love SF, but if I were moving to California, I'd move some place warmer. And someplace with fewer fantastic restaurants - every time I visit SF I wind up eating until my stomach hurts. At every meal.

Sara R-C, Friday, 30 March 2007 16:02 (eighteen years ago)

But it's a great walking city!! That's why I never gain wait in Paris, for example.

The weather leaves me a little cold - literally.

Michael White, Friday, 30 March 2007 16:33 (eighteen years ago)

I agree about the walking; I'm just partial to warmer weather to walk in.

The thing that always surprises me about SF is how cold I get inside the houses. But it is apparently warm enough that a lot of places aren't insulated, so I guess it makes sense.

Let's face it, I need to move to Hawaii.

Sara R-C, Friday, 30 March 2007 17:03 (eighteen years ago)

Hawaii would also be good.

Ms Misery, Friday, 30 March 2007 17:04 (eighteen years ago)

My place is insulated but we have little heating so it gets cold sometimes. Otoh, we have about a $60 electric bill.

Michael White, Friday, 30 March 2007 17:15 (eighteen years ago)

As long as you don't go days and days with highs over 100, you're good with me.

Ms Misery, Friday, 30 March 2007 17:18 (eighteen years ago)

Nope.

Hawaii would feel, well, a little insular to me after a while.

Michael White, Friday, 30 March 2007 17:20 (eighteen years ago)

Speaking of Hawaii, I'll be there mid-October, tickets bought. Now, to plan a mid-Pacific FAP.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 30 March 2007 17:21 (eighteen years ago)

Which island, Ned?

Michael White, Friday, 30 March 2007 17:23 (eighteen years ago)

Wow am I jealous of you Ned!

Sara R-C, Friday, 30 March 2007 17:44 (eighteen years ago)

Ned and Gareth would both leave me disgusted with jealousy if they weren't such nice guys.

Ms Misery, Friday, 30 March 2007 17:47 (eighteen years ago)

I'm bummed I never got to meet Gareth when he was in SF.

Michael White, Friday, 30 March 2007 17:52 (eighteen years ago)

I had the pleasure of giving Gareth a driving tour of TX a few years ago: Houston, Galveston, Austin and Dallas. It was great.

Ms Misery, Friday, 30 March 2007 17:54 (eighteen years ago)
