Dielo, Monday, 26 February 2007 00:09 (eighteen years ago)

if you have cable you have 3 options: Roeper on ABC, Joan Rivers on TVGUIDE and SEACREST! on E!

Wrinklepaws, Monday, 26 February 2007 00:24 (eighteen years ago)

babel director seems like a total douchnozzle. kirsten dunst's brother looks kinda retarded.

chaki, Monday, 26 February 2007 00:26 (eighteen years ago)

tr me too, so sad!

tehresa, Monday, 26 February 2007 00:27 (eighteen years ago)

Isla Fisher's breasts are making a concerted effort to upstage Sacha Baron Cohen on the red carpet.

OK, Fearne's gone away. I'm now watching Ryan Seacrest on E!, despite Fearne wittering away to anyone that would listen that Sky One were the only channel showiing red carpet coverage in the UK.

ailsa, Monday, 26 February 2007 00:27 (eighteen years ago)

Celine Dion looks simply scrumptious

Wrinklepaws, Monday, 26 February 2007 00:27 (eighteen years ago)

nickalicious, Monday, 26 February 2007 00:44 (eighteen years ago)

Can I watch red carpet on netwerk tv?

nickalicious, Monday, 26 February 2007 00:46 (eighteen years ago)

I have a red carpet, I'll get it! It's got a big kick drum kickerdoodle oil stain on it.

nickalicious, Monday, 26 February 2007 00:46 (eighteen years ago)

Then I'll put on a tie.

nickalicious, Monday, 26 February 2007 00:47 (eighteen years ago)

tehresa, Monday, 26 February 2007 00:48 (eighteen years ago)

OK, please stop involving Ricky Gervais in things that don't involve him.

ailsa, Monday, 26 February 2007 00:49 (eighteen years ago)

I am still traumatised by the sight of Peter Baynham's flowing hair.

carson dial, Monday, 26 February 2007 00:51 (eighteen years ago)

tehresa: let's have babies
ailsa: OTM

Wrinklepaws, Monday, 26 February 2007 00:52 (eighteen years ago)

nickalicious, Monday, 26 February 2007 00:56 (eighteen years ago)

tehresa, Monday, 26 February 2007 00:59 (eighteen years ago)

i'd dress up if i could see the damn thing. ailsa, where do you live again?

jed_, Monday, 26 February 2007 01:08 (eighteen years ago)

On the ABC red carpet special, Leo looked disappointed that he was nominated for Blood Diamond instead of The Departed.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Monday, 26 February 2007 01:09 (eighteen years ago)

i don't have a tv so i'm expecting doubleplusgood play-by-play action on this thread.

get bent, Monday, 26 February 2007 01:12 (eighteen years ago)

all my formals are at my mom's house!

tehresa, Monday, 26 February 2007 01:13 (eighteen years ago)

nickalicious looks like David Tennant in that oh-noes-I-was-successful-now-I-have-brain-damage drama that was on BBC1 earlier/yesterday.

Dielo, Monday, 26 February 2007 01:13 (eighteen years ago)

I'm not sure why I'm watching as i don't think I've seen any of the big films nominated (other than sunshine)

Ms Misery, Monday, 26 February 2007 01:14 (eighteen years ago)

When does this fuckin' thing start? Nine EST?

forksclovetofu, Monday, 26 February 2007 01:14 (eighteen years ago)

oh hay we get more red carpet now!

tehresa, Monday, 26 February 2007 01:15 (eighteen years ago)

yeah, i've only seen pursuit of happyness

Wrinklepaws, Monday, 26 February 2007 01:16 (eighteen years ago)

i don't think i've seen any of them. the last movies i saw in theater were: inland empire, scanner darkly, strangers with candy.

tehresa, Monday, 26 February 2007 01:16 (eighteen years ago)

anika noni rose, gorgeous dress!

daria-g, Monday, 26 February 2007 01:18 (eighteen years ago)

Ryan Gosling IS THE HOTT.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Monday, 26 February 2007 01:18 (eighteen years ago)

jed, I'm in Renfrew. I'm in my pyjamas watching terrible American cable coverage. I don't have Sky Movies, so this is as good as it's going to get.

ailsa, Monday, 26 February 2007 01:23 (eighteen years ago)

i'll not bother ordering the taxi then :)

jed_, Monday, 26 February 2007 01:26 (eighteen years ago)

(I would go and dress up, but it's just me and I can't be arsed)

ailsa, Monday, 26 February 2007 01:26 (eighteen years ago)

rinko kikuchi is always stylin'.. also catherine deneuve looks great

daria-g, Monday, 26 February 2007 01:26 (eighteen years ago)

where is a photo of reese witherspoon? andre leon talley said it's thuyskens for nina ricci, i really want to see!

daria-g, Monday, 26 February 2007 01:28 (eighteen years ago)

online stream anyone? :(

Lovelace, Monday, 26 February 2007 01:34 (eighteen years ago)

i love Ellen's skirt

Wrinklepaws, Monday, 26 February 2007 01:37 (eighteen years ago)

god. . .there's no way I'm going to make it through this show. degeneres is boredom on a stick.

Ms Misery, Monday, 26 February 2007 01:40 (eighteen years ago)

Oh, Reese Witherspoon looks a total cutie.

ailsa, Monday, 26 February 2007 01:42 (eighteen years ago)

Good dresses thus far: Beyonce, J-Lo, Reese Witherspoon, Rachel Weisz, Helen Mirren. No utter horror show disasters yet.

ailsa, Monday, 26 February 2007 01:44 (eighteen years ago)

(though I'm unconvinced by Jennifer Hudson's outfit)

ailsa, Monday, 26 February 2007 01:45 (eighteen years ago)

oh, i found a photo (e online). cute. if i described that kind of a dress.. it'd hard to imagine a ruffled violet purple strapless gown that actually looked fresh and sort of modern, but here we are. not my style but I do like it.

daria-g, Monday, 26 February 2007 01:46 (eighteen years ago)

i kinda dig nicole kidman's red thing
jada pinkett smith = bad dress for her, i do not like
jennifer hudson's dress is nice, i don't know if the capelet was just for red carpet or what.. but they can't pick on her without picking on andre leon talley
i also don't like jennifer lopez's dress at all
naomi watts looks different, in a good way I think

daria-g, Monday, 26 February 2007 01:50 (eighteen years ago)

Guys am I drunk or is Ellen really fucking funny tonite.

nickalicious, Monday, 26 February 2007 01:50 (eighteen years ago)

ok maybe I R drunkened...the random thing on Nicole Kidman's shoulder was ridiculous.

nickalicious, Monday, 26 February 2007 01:51 (eighteen years ago)

gwyneth paltrow wtf? i like the color, i like the red with it, but i don't know what to think about the dress, but i guess it's good to take a risk

daria-g, Monday, 26 February 2007 01:53 (eighteen years ago)

you r drunk, Ellen is bad so far

Isla Fisher's breasts
sad I missed them </creepy>

milo z, Monday, 26 February 2007 01:53 (eighteen years ago)

kristen dunst looks cool! i like that! a+

daria-g, Monday, 26 February 2007 01:54 (eighteen years ago)

not much chance Ellen was going to be as good as Jon Stewart though, so maybe I should have lowered my expectations

milo z, Monday, 26 February 2007 01:54 (eighteen years ago)

Oh, I lied about the no really horrible dresses, btw. Penelope Cruz looks like one of those things you stick over toilet rolls.

ailsa, Monday, 26 February 2007 01:55 (eighteen years ago)

anika noni rose, a+, that dress is perfect, the fit is perfect
(I don't care about the films at all here)

daria-g, Monday, 26 February 2007 01:56 (eighteen years ago)

penelope cruz, I think it was good for the occasion but not a style i personally like. it's probably chanel again isn't it?

daria-g, Monday, 26 February 2007 01:57 (eighteen years ago)

hahahaha helen mirren will be coming home with me!

tehresa, Monday, 26 February 2007 01:57 (eighteen years ago)

E! cameraman in wuv with Cameron Diaz. Seriously, she's on all the sodding time.

ailsa, Monday, 26 February 2007 01:57 (eighteen years ago)

Ha, the Oscars is like the only time I ever care about dresses. I know next to nothing about this stuff.

ailsa, Monday, 26 February 2007 01:58 (eighteen years ago)

yay for Pan's winning all the tech awards.. they deserve it.

chaki, Monday, 26 February 2007 01:59 (eighteen years ago)

Sweet. Well deserved for Pan's indeed.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 26 February 2007 02:02 (eighteen years ago)

IF IT DOESN'T IT WILL BE CIVIL WAR WITHOUT END

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Monday, 26 February 2007 02:03 (eighteen years ago)

hmm, as long as forest whitaker wins the actor award i'm not overly fussed.

unfished business, Monday, 26 February 2007 02:04 (eighteen years ago)

wtf w/ "apologizing to Tom Hanks"? I don't undertsand. And apparently Will Smith's kid doesn't either LOLZ.

nickalicious, Monday, 26 February 2007 02:04 (eighteen years ago)

Oh, has it started? We're still on re-runs of people walking down the red carpet and making polite conversation with Ryan Seacrest. Jennifer Hudson has POCKETS in her dress and is ambling about with her hands in them. Also, that shiny jacket thing, ugh.

ailsa, Monday, 26 February 2007 02:04 (eighteen years ago)

yah its on!

chaki, Monday, 26 February 2007 02:06 (eighteen years ago)

i have one (1) skirt and one (1) shirt that have pockets and i think it's the best evar

tehresa, Monday, 26 February 2007 02:08 (eighteen years ago)

Jack Black should never be within 20 yards of a microphone, much less have one strapped to his head.

Clay, Monday, 26 February 2007 02:09 (eighteen years ago)

Peter O'Toole looks like Palpatine.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Monday, 26 February 2007 02:09 (eighteen years ago)

Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved, Monday, 26 February 2007 04:14 (eighteen years ago)

i really dig this oscars. i must be hormonal cuz i kept getting weepy. at work! that 50 furrin language films montage made me weepy. so did ennio.

scott seward, Monday, 26 February 2007 04:16 (eighteen years ago)

ok so the 5 best pic nominees squared off in the screenplay categories and it's lil ms. sunshine vs. the departed. my guess is scorsese gets director, sunshine gets pic.

(but i am always wrong.)

tipsy mothra, Monday, 26 February 2007 04:16 (eighteen years ago)

the fact that the screenplay writer winner just said "funnest" encapsulates everything that is to be said about that movie

Wrinklepaws, Monday, 26 February 2007 04:16 (eighteen years ago)

no way sunshine gets best pic.

gbx, Monday, 26 February 2007 04:17 (eighteen years ago)

scott seward, Monday, 26 February 2007 05:41 (eighteen years ago)

ellen wasn't a very interesting host.

did nicholson not want to read his lines, and just forced keaton to do all the work?

scorsese deserved it for this film and also deserved not winning the last 3 times or so.

abanana, Monday, 26 February 2007 05:42 (eighteen years ago)

i think ellen's spazzy goofball shtick is about right for the oscars.

tipsy mothra, Monday, 26 February 2007 05:51 (eighteen years ago)

Ellen was perfect; she seemed really comfortable. I wish Jennifer Hudson had worn the dress she sang in all night, but I love her anyway!

best dressed: this Emily Blunt person in the blue sparkly, Kirsten Dunst, Reese Witherspoon, Gwyneth Paltrow, fucking Diane Keaton who looks AMAZING, Helen Mirren even though I don't think that dress would have worked on anyone else, hmmm, there were others, too.

Ennio Morricone was awesome and Clint Eastwood was drunk.

horseshoe, Monday, 26 February 2007 05:58 (eighteen years ago)

I thought keanu and d. keaton dated seriously after making something's gotta give together, too.

the strapless dresses that were all droopy were driving me crazy. most things needs to be lifted like 2 inches.

Yerac, Monday, 26 February 2007 06:11 (eighteen years ago)

yeah, best oscars in a long time! well-produced, with some slightly offbeat (for teh oscars anyway) arty stuff. my friend and i think it's because it was the Gaycademie Awards. i mean, interpretive dance? c'mon now, haha. i loved it! (though that last hour was tough to get through, god it really does go on forever doesn't it.)

i liked Ellen a lot as host for this kind of gig, esp the bit with getting spielberg to take myspace photos of her and eastwood. she really loosened up as the show went on too - the crack about george cl00ney not being able to accept that he would never have her. har.

lots of bad dresses, a few good ones
was happy for j hudson but scared during her performance that her right boob was trying to make a break for it

Little Miss Sunshine screenplay award - boo.

Everything else, pretty all right, really.

Little Miss Sunshine screenplay award - boo.

ugh, yeah. i tried really hard not to rant about that and then i ranted a bit. the only good thing about that movie is the performances (ugh, how many times have i said that in the past six months...)

celine di0n's facial expressions were comedy gold too

sad for children of men but yaaay for pan's labyrinth!

rrrobyn, Monday, 26 February 2007 06:27 (eighteen years ago)

yes, lots of bad dresses. marchesa! awful! tacky! ugh. do not want
I also do not like zac posen (gwyneth paltrow dress), he seems to love to do these awkward pointed diagonals that look like a bad tap dance costume if you think about it, very very unflattering
cameron diaz looks cool, her dress got rumpled but somehow on her it just looks like she prefers it that way. jennifer hudson was beautiful once she got rid of that silver jacket thing (i don't mind it but it's distracting). dresses with pockets = cool
catherine deneuve and kirsten dunst I liked the best, I think. somehow everything in that kirsten dunst dress should be horrible put together and yet, I like it on her, it doesn't look fussy at all, it was great

daria-g, Monday, 26 February 2007 06:29 (eighteen years ago)

Al Gore should have kept his beard. I think I could have voted for beardo Gore.

milo z, Monday, 26 February 2007 06:30 (eighteen years ago)

nicole kidman's bright red is very nice too!

daria-g, Monday, 26 February 2007 06:33 (eighteen years ago)

aimurchie, Monday, 26 February 2007 06:33 (eighteen years ago)

hah, maybe Gore should keep the beard. otherwise.. without the beard.. he's nerdy anyway and can start to look a little bit like a scientologist

daria-g, Monday, 26 February 2007 06:34 (eighteen years ago)

I forgot to mention that the Michael Mann montage nutjob treatment evoked actual cries of consternation in the bar I was in. "It's about racism, wait, america, wait, WHAT THE FUCK IS GOING ON?"

John Justen, Monday, 26 February 2007 06:37 (eighteen years ago)

the more I see nicole kidman dress the more I like it! so modern. eva green is sort of goth & didn't care enough to have her hair done and I like that too

milo z, Monday, 26 February 2007 06:51 (eighteen years ago)

:) I don't know, I like the simplicity, the super bright color. I like the giant bow! it looked futuristic. who wants to do old hollywood glam any more? that's boring. i mean I'm no super fashionista but the cottage industry of tabloid magazines & tv shows nitpicking on clothes that people's stylist's put together for them.. it makes everyone look the same and it's hard to find.. I don't know.. real style? i'm sure us weekly will hate it but nicole's dress is great

YOU'RE INSANE

Best thing was we saw Cagney at least 3 times.

also -- Helen Mirren: fuck Elizabeth Windsor. Hard.

Dr Morbius, Monday, 26 February 2007 14:32 (eighteen years ago)

I could've swore Prince was one of the best song nominees. I kept waiting for him to perform.

nickalicious, Monday, 26 February 2007 14:35 (eighteen years ago)

omg, Melissa E put "an inconvenient truth" IN THE LYRICS

Dr Morbius, Monday, 26 February 2007 14:36 (eighteen years ago)

and how do you NOT GIVE SACHA B COHEN ANYTHING TO DO ON THE SHOW??

Dr Morbius, Monday, 26 February 2007 14:51 (eighteen years ago)

Also absent from the obits: Perry Henzell and Leonard Schrader, both of whom I admit have thin filmographies, but were important nonetheless. They did finally find room for Don Knotts and Darren McGavin, who both died a couple of weeks before the ceremony last year. Do they have a cut-off date for this?

C. Grisso/McCain, Monday, 26 February 2007 17:21 (eighteen years ago)

I always assumed it was ceremony to ceremony; how long could it take to edit a clip in?

Dr Morbius, Monday, 26 February 2007 17:30 (eighteen years ago)

and how do you NOT GIVE SACHA B COHEN ANYTHING TO DO ON THE SHOW??

Good point.

jaymc, Monday, 26 February 2007 17:32 (eighteen years ago)

Maybe they felt havn' those guys in the Borat thongs in the intro was enough, but yeah

C. Grisso/McCain, Monday, 26 February 2007 17:35 (eighteen years ago)

I thought SBC opted out of participating?!?

David R., Monday, 26 February 2007 17:43 (eighteen years ago)

My mind is still boggling over that shitty Inconvenient Truth song beating out all three Dreamgirls tunes.

darin, Monday, 26 February 2007 17:51 (eighteen years ago)

Exactly. You give SBC nothing to do when SBC decides he wants nothing to do with the Oscarcast.

Eric H., Monday, 26 February 2007 18:03 (eighteen years ago)

I was only happy when Melissa Etheridge won because that was one of the categories I predicted correctly against the grain of common sense (i.e. the worst of the three nommed Dreamgirls songs).

Eric H., Monday, 26 February 2007 18:05 (eighteen years ago)

Al Gore should do a buddy comedy movie with Alec Baldwin.

nickalicious, Monday, 26 February 2007 18:07 (eighteen years ago)

Dude if they could get into a 30 Rock slapfight because Jack did Tipper!!!!!!

David R., Monday, 26 February 2007 18:08 (eighteen years ago)

Re: Morricone Was I the only one who felt his montage needed more from the Westerns? I know he hates that that section of his career gets so much ink, but was it too much to ask for a little Once Upon A Time In The West ?

C. Grisso/McCain, Monday, 26 February 2007 18:11 (eighteen years ago)

the montage was mostly drippy orchestral stuff, and none of the wacked-out crazy shit (obv).

Al Gore's shock take when the orch "cut him off" was very 1948 Columbia two-reeler comedy.

Dr Morbius, Monday, 26 February 2007 18:13 (eighteen years ago)

So, did Forest Whitaker's speech end on a big, brassy note of scientology? Something about his next lifetime?

Eric H., Monday, 26 February 2007 18:15 (eighteen years ago)

drippy and orchestral or not, the soundtrack to The Mission is one of my all-time faves.

Figure skaters love The Mission soundtrack.

Dave Kehr sez

No argument with Helen Mirren — but why is it suddenly the accepted attitude to treat the Queen of England as a saintly, quietly suffering underdog? But that, too, is the Academy: a bunch of proud liberals right up to the moment they’re allowed to kowtow to the British aristocracy.

So that’s over, and now the industry can get back to making “Ghost Rider II.”

did I actually just hear Helen Mirren say her dress held her breasts "like two angels' hands"?

jessie monster, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 03:17 (eighteen years ago)

An inconvenient truth
Is not a truth that’s gonna pass
An inconvenient truth
Will tell your friends ‘bout greenhouse gas
When you’re tryin’ to find the proof
And telling Peter, Paul, and Ruth
You can look
To an inconvenient truth

An inconvenient truth
Is not convenient to impart
An inconvenient truth
Won’t make your face into a heart
But when the Dentist on the roof
Can’t save the world’s impacted tooth
You can look
To an inconvenient truth

are Arkin and Mike Nichols the only ppl with roots in Chicago improv to win Oscars?

Dr Morbius, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 14:40 (eighteen years ago)

I think so. Barbara Harris was nomintated for ...Harry Kellerman... but didn't win. Nia Vardalos didn't win the writing award for My Big Fat Greek Wedding either. Alan Alda was Second City as well, but IIRC, he was just part of a New York stageshow they did.

C. Grisso/McCain, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 17:15 (eighteen years ago)

Elaine May and Bill Murray were both nominated as well (but didn't win).

jaymc, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 17:22 (eighteen years ago)

I'm still kicking myself for missing the question at bar trivia last week: "Who was the first SNL alum to be nominated for an Oscar?" Aykroyd's name came to mind, but I didn't think he had actually been nominated for Driving Miss Daisy. Turns out he had, and so Bill Murray was wrong.

jaymc, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 17:26 (eighteen years ago)

The best presentation of all was the wacked-out Elliot Gould and Sally Kellerman at the Independent Spirit Awards.

Elvis Telecom, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 17:28 (eighteen years ago)

Checking the wiki: Melinda Dillion didn't win for Close Encounters or Absence of Malice either.

For some reason I keep thinking Bill Murray was one of the Toronto guys, which of course he wasn't.

C. Grisso/McCain, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 17:32 (eighteen years ago)

I totally missed ISAs. was Sarah Silverman OUTRAGEOUS?
