honorable mention: being responsible for johnny depp having a tattoo that says "WINO FOREVER"

nabisco, Thursday, 1 March 2007 18:16 (eighteen years ago)

no, i think that nabisco was correct in his #1 entry, and should've possibly just stopped there (esp the aliens one should've been left off, dude)

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Thursday, 1 March 2007 18:16 (eighteen years ago)

but dude, if she hadn't turned out to be a robot, then her acting would have been HORRIBLE, do you see?

nickalicious, Thursday, 1 March 2007 18:17 (eighteen years ago)

Her cleavage has portions?

God, her & PH explains why Helmet went to shit.

Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved, Thursday, 1 March 2007 18:30 (eighteen years ago)

Ha - I like that Kingfish needed an addendum for Page Hamilton, as if just listing RHETT MILLER is enough.

David R., Thursday, 1 March 2007 18:31 (eighteen years ago)

she told my friend that when she met lindsay lohan, lindsay loudly referred to her as a dinosaur as she was walking away. poor winona!

Jeez, Winona's only like 33 or something. She had birthday recently and I was kinda shocked she was so young. I can barely rember a time when she was not around (I'm 24 BTW)

C. Grisso/McCain, Thursday, 1 March 2007 18:31 (eighteen years ago)

as if just listing RHETT MILLER is enough.

Rhett Miller (of swoony blogcrush fame)

And I think the last ish of Chunklet had some list of all the muso & actor types she's been affliated with. The article was not written in the most congratulatory tone.

kingfish, Thursday, 1 March 2007 18:33 (eighteen years ago)

haha winona took decades to wind up in mr deeds -- lindsay practically started out there! and it's not like even mean girls is going to have the longevity of heathers or those burton movies.

nabisco, Thursday, 1 March 2007 18:36 (eighteen years ago)

Wait a minute, Chunklet was being ... sarcastic?

jaymc, Thursday, 1 March 2007 18:36 (eighteen years ago)

Dr Morbius, Thursday, 1 March 2007 18:38 (eighteen years ago)

I wd love to see La Lohan in a period drama. Aside from Mean Girls.

David R., Thursday, 1 March 2007 18:39 (eighteen years ago)

that movie is bad, but she was perfectly cast.

TOMBOT, Thursday, 1 March 2007 18:39 (eighteen years ago)

Most awkward "you are not that character" performance in movie history.

no, that movie sucked

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Thursday, 1 March 2007 18:43 (eighteen years ago)

I love Winona Ryder.

Curt1s Stephens, Thursday, 1 March 2007 18:44 (eighteen years ago)

I like that movie, I just don't see how anyone expected that character to be remotely workable, particularly as played by Winona Ryder.

nabisco, Thursday, 1 March 2007 18:45 (eighteen years ago)

I mean who casts Winona Ryder as a MECHANIC?

nabisco, Thursday, 1 March 2007 18:46 (eighteen years ago)

Asia Argento.

nabisco, Thursday, 1 March 2007 18:51 (eighteen years ago)

i'm not really sure what your problem is but those all sound ok to me.

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Thursday, 1 March 2007 18:52 (eighteen years ago)

And middle-named after Aldous Huxley's wife! Her given name is pretty hardcore with the assonance: Winona Laura Horowitz. It's like a tongue twister. Winona Laura Horowitz.

nabisco, Thursday, 1 March 2007 18:54 (eighteen years ago)

Wow. Is she related to James Salter?

James Redd and the Blecchs, Thursday, 1 March 2007 18:56 (eighteen years ago)

ok dude seriously? in what way is that a tongue twister? it's pretty easy to say.

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Thursday, 1 March 2007 18:57 (eighteen years ago)

um, i think he might have been projecting a little

James Redd and the Blecchs, Thursday, 1 March 2007 18:57 (eighteen years ago)

maybe less a tongue twister than a poem! the assonance, the rhythm -- it's a tripling up of internal O + schwa, and in perfect iambic tetrameter, if you say it fast enough:

winOnA lOrA hOrAwitz!

the stress drops on the O every time, and then immediately comes down to the schwa!

nabisco, Thursday, 1 March 2007 19:02 (eighteen years ago)

her name is practically "oh-ah oh-ah oh-ah!"

nabisco, Thursday, 1 March 2007 19:03 (eighteen years ago)

kingfish, Thursday, 1 March 2007 19:24 (eighteen years ago)

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Thursday, 1 March 2007 19:26 (eighteen years ago)

I am so not joking about the name!

I think horseshoe's right about her voice, by the way: the timbre and cadence of it were perfect for a kind of unformed teenage quality, but then then just ... never really changed. A lot of her acting tics are kind of the same, these awkward teenagey uncomfortable moves that seem increasingly odd in stuff she's done recently.

Hopefully someone will cast her for some kind of smaller-movie her-age character that would actually benefit from that quality. Like I could see her using those traits really well in a Nicole Holofcener film!

nabisco, Thursday, 1 March 2007 19:27 (eighteen years ago)

Can someone please explain the stalking Westerberg thing? I've never heard about this before and was probably too young to notice any Replacements lyrics in Heathers the last time I saw it. I'm intrigued!

ENBB, Thursday, 1 March 2007 19:56 (eighteen years ago)

From an interview in the san fran chronicle with Paul Westerberg.

Q: Speaking of which, did Winona Ryder steal anything from you when you were seeing her?

A: Steal anything? My time.

Q: I guess that's worth more than $5,000 at Saks.

A: Yeah, I guess so.

Yerac, Thursday, 1 March 2007 19:58 (eighteen years ago)

winona should NOT have been in pump up the volume, she should have been in the Matrix instead of keanu reeves. that movie would have been AWESS. basically, if she had replaced keanu in every movie he was ever in post-Bill &Ted's Bogus Journey we would be talking about a much cooler world.

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 1 March 2007 20:47 (eighteen years ago)

gene hackman would not have been very believable trying to convince winona ryder that winners always want the ball when the game is on the line

TOMBOT, Thursday, 1 March 2007 20:49 (eighteen years ago)

ENBB, they all attended Westerberg High in Heathers!

ghost rider, Thursday, 1 March 2007 20:50 (eighteen years ago)

To be fair, Samantha Mathis' character in PUTV was pretty similar Winona's Heathers character. She even had the same hairdo.

And yes! - YOU BOTHER ME! And Pappas! Oh, for the love of Christ. How the hell did I even let you talk me into this whole bone-headed idea to begin with.
Pappas: Harp! We are working under-cover. It takes time. We've produced a few...
Ben Harp: NO! No no no no no no NO! Let me tell you what you've produced... Over the last two weeks, you two have produced exactly squat! SQUAT! During which time the ex-presidents have robbed two more banks. Now for Christ's sake, does either one of you have anything even remotely interesting to tell me?

[strike]Jack[strike] Winona: You, FUCK!

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 1 March 2007 21:01 (eighteen years ago)

I think her voice also fails to match up to how pretty she is, which is just inevitably disappointing. but yeah, it's mostly that it hasn't changed since she was 13.

horseshoe, Thursday, 1 March 2007 21:02 (eighteen years ago)

Conrade: Yea, but you must not make the full show of this till you may do it without controlment. You have of late stood out against your brother, and he hath ta'en you newly into his grace; where it is impossible you should take true root but by the fair weather that you make yourself: it is needful that you frame the season for your own harvest.
Don JohnWINONA: I had rather be a canker in a hedge than a rose in his grace, in this, though I cannot be said to be a flattering honest man, it must not be denied but I am a plain-dealing villain. they were both in Little Women. Mathis has always struck me as a bit Ryder manque.

horseshoe, Thursday, 1 March 2007 21:29 (eighteen years ago)

Winona Ryder....Neo
Christian Slater...Trinity
Samuel L Jackson...Morpheus ("I said DON'T take the red pill god damn IT!")
Mel Gibson...Agent Smith

nickalicious, Thursday, 1 March 2007 21:29 (eighteen years ago)

Mathas is normally blonde but had short dark hair in PUTV which is v Winona so I could see, many years later, how they might be confused. Esp with Christian S. thrown in the mix. I realize they weren't exactly the same.

ENBB, Thursday, 1 March 2007 21:40 (eighteen years ago)

I suggest a gender-reversed Edwina Scissorhands with Winona as Scissorhands and old-school Harrison Ford in her role. Just to underline that fleeting moment where you're like "wait, why exactly did Vincent Price make it look like that, and what exactly is he planning to do with it after he gives it real hands???"

nabisco, Thursday, 1 March 2007 21:41 (eighteen years ago)

rewatched BEETLEJUICE recently and remember how totally in love w/ this girl i was ca. 1988–1992. first very popular new wave-influenced mainstream movie heroine? also was impressed by how cute she was but also how very totally jewish she looked as well (this was in the years surrounding my bar mitzvah, so i pretended to care about such things).

although if i'm being honest she was hottest during her trial.

“I was wearing an old Salvation Army shop boy’s suit. As I went to the bathroom I heard people saying, ‘Hey, faggot’. They slammed my head into a locker. I fell to the ground and they started to kick the shit out of me. I had to have stitches. The school kicked me out, not the bullies.

“Years later, I went to a coffee shop and I ran into one of the girls who’d kicked me, and she said, ‘Winona, Winona, can I have your autograph?’ And I said, ‘Do you remember me? Remember in seventh grade you beat up that kid?’ And she said, ‘Kind of’. And I said, ‘That was me. Go fuck yourself.’”

seems kinda like a made-up story, but how cute is she

Does Roxy Carmichael have any kind of a cult following? Found it in a bargain bin a couple of months ago, threw it on tonight, and thought it was surprisingly, gratifyingly good. Reminded me of Demme in the '80s--one of those rare box-office concoctions where no one's made to look stupid. Even Francis Fisher, who comes closest to a one-dimensional villain, gets a nice moment right at the end.

i remember liking it a lot, though i can't remember much about it. probably time for a revisit.

(The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Sunday, 16 November 2014 06:59 (ten years ago)

Please post if you do. I'm not sure if I was just in the right frame of mind (I saw the Godard film in the afternoon--typically difficult and discursive--so I may have been extra-susceptible to something soft and light) and would like to hear from someone else. It's the kind of film that seems made for Ebert, and he didn't like it, although he did have good things to say about Ryder. I agree with him that the Roxy backstory could have been handled better. But I really was surprised by how much I liked almost every character (the would-be boyfriend, adoptive father, and guidance counselor especially--and Ryder, of course), loved the atmospheric score, and thought the requisite happy ending was fine.

As her NY retro draws closer, has anyone seen 1969? A hippie bath with the writer of On Golden Pond as the auteur, i can't imagine how atrocious it must be, even w/ Bruce Dern and Joanna Cassidy in support.

Apparently there's a recent Olive Films DVD of Mermaids... didn't know it was well regarded enough for that.

btw The Age of Innocence appears in the series now, and in 35mm.

a Mets fan who gave up on everything in the mid '80s (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 14 August 2018 15:57 (six years ago)

i don't remember anything about it beyond it sucking

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Tuesday, 14 August 2018 16:00 (six years ago)

Mermaids has a modest cult, appropriately befitting a film featuring a family made up of Cher, Winona, and Christina Ricchi.

Ubering With The King (C. Grisso/McCain), Tuesday, 14 August 2018 16:24 (six years ago)

Also the Olive Films release happened simply because MGM is farming out 95% of their catalogue DVD/BluRay reissues to 3rd party boutique labels.

Ubering With The King (C. Grisso/McCain), Tuesday, 14 August 2018 16:26 (six years ago)

for whatever reason i have rewatched mermaids twice in the last couple of years. it's not bad, winona and cher's performances are the centre of the film and they're pretty good. bob hoskins' american accent is terrible and there's a couple of extremely o_0 elements

( ͡☉ ͜ʖ ͡☉) (jim in vancouver), Tuesday, 14 August 2018 16:27 (six years ago)

My local theatre is doing a mini Winona-fest: Heathers, Edward Scissorhands, Reality Bites, and Dracula. I saw Scissorhands last night - most enjoyed the dinner table scenes and any time Alan Arkin has a line.
