John Justen and Fluffy Bear Will Drink It

Shots, cocktails, punches. Beer bombs and coffee drinks.

You give us the recipes--we'll drink the drinks and post the pics.

John called me up last night and said, "Jeff, the good folks at ilx made so many wonderful drink suggestions on my birthday thread, it would be sad shame not to try them all. We should order these drinks and document the event."

To which, I replied, "Whoa."

We may not get to all of your courageous cocktails, libidinous libations, and sordid shots, but we may die trying (with photo-documentation).

A dynamic drunkard's documentary of debauchery. Interactive, no less!

Fluffy Bear Hearts Rainbows, Friday, 2 March 2007 15:35 (eighteen years ago)

So, give us more suggestions. We’ll start this weekend, and continue, most likely, for the rest of our sodden lives.

Here are some of the drink suggestions from John’s birthday thread:

Hoorah!
Last night, the waitress at the Red Dragon helped Jeff and Mike create two shots named the "Fuck John" and the "Fuck John Again".
They worked. She also apoligized later and told me that the "Fuck John Again" was made up of 151, tequila, vodka, whiskey, and tobasco.
I fear this will not catch on and make me famous.

If you all want to vote for/design a drink for me (that won't actually kill me), I promise to go to a bar after work and drink it, and then post the results. My pain is my birthday present to you.

Also, I'm paying for it, so any top shelf stuff is getting subbed for rail.

My Life as an Enlisted Man
12 oz can Coors (not light)
dash Tabasco Habanera sauce

Here, John substituted Old Style for Coors. Let’s see how it turned out.

You two are a riot. Making up weird drinks is much more fun than physiology take home tests, though, so I know what I'll do for distraction. Thanks for being ILX's guinea pigs.

Sara R-C, Friday, 2 March 2007 16:29 (eighteen years ago)

DC ILX is going to revive Enlisted Man tonight, I think.

TOMBOT, Friday, 2 March 2007 16:43 (eighteen years ago)

Keep the dream alive!

John Justen, Friday, 2 March 2007 16:45 (eighteen years ago)

It is not an easy flavor to escape from. Once you do it a few times and enjoy it, going and having a domestic american yeller lager without any vinegary hot pepper goodness just seems vaguely disappointing on many levels, and soon enough everybody at the bar is pointing at "that weirdo" as you shake the last few drops out of the gratis tabasco from one of the dining tables into your Bud and swirl it around.

TOMBOT, Friday, 2 March 2007 16:46 (eighteen years ago)

yeah well people said einstein was weird too.

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Friday, 2 March 2007 16:47 (eighteen years ago)

if you guys drink a nipsy russell i will paypal you $50

strongohulkington, Friday, 2 March 2007 16:50 (eighteen years ago)

so named because after my friend drank it (and before he passed out) he spoke unconsciously (?) in rhyme for the rest of the night

strongohulkington, Friday, 2 March 2007 16:51 (eighteen years ago)

I am intrigued. Tell me more. Of waht is it made?

John Justen, Friday, 2 March 2007 17:10 (eighteen years ago)

And don't forget the "College Students Are Sometimes Idiots:"

cherry Jello shots with vodka

add more vodka than necessary

then add Jolly Ranchers to try to firm the shots up.

I know; it's been done before. Perhaps the candy should be of a contrasting flavor to add extra interest (like, say, lemon or grape. Oooh, or you could go really wild and toss in those hard candies called "Root Beer Barrels").

Sara R-C, Friday, 2 March 2007 17:45 (eighteen years ago)

i need to text or email my friend for the full recipe. from what i remember it involved a pureed habanero pepper.

strongohulkington, Friday, 2 March 2007 17:48 (eighteen years ago)

so many drink recipes lost to the haze oh, uh, drinking.

strongohulkington, Friday, 2 March 2007 17:49 (eighteen years ago)

one time we put some vodka and gummy worms in a plastic cup and left them overnight. The worms soaked up as much vodka as physics would allow, the rest evaporated, and we ended up with a rainbow-camouflaged, perfectly circular alcoholic gummi disc, a little lumpy, a lot squishy, at the bottom of the cup.

1 - 12 oz bottle Miller High Life
2 - fl oz of orange juice

It is easy and very surprisingly yummy.

nickalicious, Friday, 2 March 2007 17:52 (eighteen years ago)

SPARK BACARDI PICARD: (this is a shot)

1 part Sparks
1 part Bacardi Rum

Everyone drinks at the same time, only after the toaster says "ENGAGE" though.

nickalicious, Friday, 2 March 2007 17:53 (eighteen years ago)

Okay. "The Witch's Tit" (co-inventor is my friend C0ry)

This should be served in a martini glass:

1 part ice cold vodka
1 part ice cold Midori
1 part ice cold green creme de menthe
1 malted milk ball
Optional: float a piece of dry ice on the top.

Sara R-C, Friday, 2 March 2007 17:53 (eighteen years ago)

you have to realize whenever evaporation is going on it's just going to focus whatever flavors are in the booze, just like cooking, so this drunkards' gummi cookie did have a sort of hospital disinfectant aftertaste to it, I think those of us who dared only managed to eat about half of it and then gave up.

TOMBOT, Friday, 2 March 2007 17:54 (eighteen years ago)

Note: I meant "toastmaster" but I'm sure it's only a matter of a few more of these before talking toasters happen also.

nickalicious, Friday, 2 March 2007 17:55 (eighteen years ago)

All right, the gummi one will take prep time, but I'm committed to that one for the good of ILX, and for SCIENCE!

John Justen, Friday, 2 March 2007 17:59 (eighteen years ago)

Oh and one time we were doing alphabet shots at the bar and my friends got to Q and came up with "The Quickie Queef." I was so disgusted by this that I starting ranting about how if they were going to call something such a fucking disgusting name then I was going to make the bartender bring us a fucking disgusting shot. I settled on gin & milk. I don't know if anybody else was stupid enough to actually throw it back besides me. I suppose I had a point to make.

"The Quickie Queef"
1 part gin
1 part milk
100% Fuck You Guys

TOMBOT, Friday, 2 March 2007 17:59 (eighteen years ago)

Something licorice flavored in that and I bet it would actually be OK for human consumption.

nickalicious, Friday, 2 March 2007 18:02 (eighteen years ago)

And the most recent discovery that I can remember is that Jarrito's -whatever flavor- and Gin, at least that new fancy limified RANGPUR stuff tanqueray's come out with, is delicious.

"IT'S DELICIOUS"

4 parts Jarrito's flavor of your choice (I make mine GUAYABA)
1 part Tanqueray Rangpur Gin

shake or stir and serve over ice in a tumbler.

TOMBOT, Friday, 2 March 2007 18:02 (eighteen years ago)

THE NIPSY RUSSELL:

6 PARTS TEQUILA
2 PARTS TRIPLE SEC
1 PART LEMON JUICE
1 PART LIME JUICE
1 PART GRAPEFRUIT JUICE
1 PUREED HABANERO PEPPER (OTHER RING-STING INDUCING PEPPER WILL SUFFICE)
SALT

strongohulkington, Friday, 2 March 2007 18:06 (eighteen years ago)

i swear to god there was some random, inane ingredient other than the pepper but he's blanking

strongohulkington, Friday, 2 March 2007 18:07 (eighteen years ago)

I will drink that out of a fucking mug

TOMBOT, Friday, 2 March 2007 18:09 (eighteen years ago)

does it get ice

TOMBOT, Friday, 2 March 2007 18:10 (eighteen years ago)

yeah i iced it but not necessary

i'm making that shit tonight before i go out

strongohulkington, Friday, 2 March 2007 18:11 (eighteen years ago)

Holy shit.

I think we might have to work our way up to that, but I'm game for it at some point.

FB, we're doing this tonight, unless the clutches of icy death descend again, right?

John Justen, Friday, 2 March 2007 18:11 (eighteen years ago)

The more I look at it, the better it sounds. I have no peppers, though. I also don't have a blender.

John Justen, Friday, 2 March 2007 18:18 (eighteen years ago)

The "OH YEAH!":

1 part cheapest whisky available
2 parts Kool-Aid of your choice

Must be drank at room temperature, preferrably while lost somewhere in the Appalachians.

nickalicious, Friday, 2 March 2007 18:19 (eighteen years ago)

This mini cuisinart is pretty awesome, we pretty much use it on a nightly basis.

TOMBOT, Friday, 2 March 2007 18:20 (eighteen years ago)

that looks like something i would have made in college while eating a "burger" that was a pound of meat on white bread

strongohulkington, Friday, 2 March 2007 18:20 (eighteen years ago)

FB, give John a decent blender for his birthday. They aren't that expensive.

Sara R-C, Friday, 2 March 2007 18:20 (eighteen years ago)

If it's a roasted pepper (ie mushy) you can just use one of those hand/immersion blenders in the mixing cup.

nickalicious, Friday, 2 March 2007 18:21 (eighteen years ago)

Oh I never came up with a name for this (I guess it could be called the "Oh Shit We're Out Of Mixers") but:

Crush mint leaves & sugar a la mint julep in bottom of cup. Add ice. Over that pour 2 oz gin to 2 oz apple juice.

nickalicious, Friday, 2 March 2007 18:23 (eighteen years ago)

this is like an alcoholic dr. strongo's thread

strongohulkington, Friday, 2 March 2007 18:24 (eighteen years ago)

The discovery of the "OH YEAH!" was followed by the invention of what is now one of my favorite camping games, to be played when camped under an overhang about 1/2 a mile up any random mountain in Appalachian NC:

Ingredients:

1 campsite 1/2 mile up mountain side
4-7 campers in a state of ruin
1 glowstick

Throw glowstick down mountain. Campers scramble to collect glowstick and make it back to campsite first. Winner gets next turn throwing glowstick. Repeat until either a) glowstick gets caught in a tree, or b) nobody gives a shit anymore. Warning: there is also the possibility of bear interference.

nickalicious, Friday, 2 March 2007 18:28 (eighteen years ago)

John, I'm doing this shit tonight. I'll be AWOL tomorrow night and possibly Sunday.

We won't be drinking all of these in one night. We will carry the torch indefinitely.

Fluffy Bear Hearts Rainbows, Friday, 2 March 2007 18:29 (eighteen years ago)

We won't be drinking all of these in one night.

Your liquor bill would be horrendous! (Um, buy stuff from my brother next time you go to HSTNGS, though, plz.)

We will carry the torch indefinitely.

That's good because this won't be the last take home test I need creative distraction from. Oh yeah, and your health, etc.

Sara R-C, Friday, 2 March 2007 20:23 (eighteen years ago)

strongohulkington, Friday, 2 March 2007 22:16 (eighteen years ago)

Have a fun weekend all. I'm looking forward to checking back to see some scientific results posted about these drinks. (Of course it won't officially be science until you replicate the experiments to see if the results hold up, but now is no time to quibble about details).

I suggest those of you with the balls (and the fire extinguisher) try this one:

The Burning Bob (courtesty of the good folk at alt.tech-support.recovery)

Ingredients:

* 1 shot Kahlua
* 1 shot chartreuse
* 1 martini glass
* 1 kitchen match, lit
* 1 straw

1. Get a martini glass. Pour in the Kahula. Carefully layer the chartreuse on top:

~
~
( )-------- <--- lit kitchen match
\_______/
\_____/ <--- chartreuse
\ / <--- Kahlua
\_/
|
|
___|___

2. Light the chartreuse.
3. IMMEDIATELY place the straw in the glass and drink from the bottom, while the top is still alight. Do this fast enough and the straw won't melt or catch fire.
4. Bow to the applause of the rest of the bar. These things are a spectator sport.

Trayce, Friday, 2 March 2007 23:22 (eighteen years ago)

i want to go camping with nicka (no homo).

another fun (desert) camping game, "Bounce":

1-2 joints
4 people
1 institutional red rubber ball

Bounce the ball to each other as hard and as high as you can, with Special Moves for throwing and catching.

Also, "Rock":

someone throws a sort of big rock up into the air and everyone else tries to hit it with a littler rock.

gbx, Friday, 2 March 2007 23:43 (eighteen years ago)

also, i think i might print this thread and bring it to my friend's b-day party tonight. we will DEFINITELY be drinking enlisted men, that's for sure.

gbx, Friday, 2 March 2007 23:43 (eighteen years ago)

It's on, bitches. Commencing in about an hour or so. We will report our progress live via ILX feed as best we can.

John Justen, Saturday, 3 March 2007 01:17 (eighteen years ago)

I am drinking half of a Stripper! (We have no SoCo. I considered substituting port.)

HI DERE, Saturday, 3 March 2007 01:17 (eighteen years ago)

See, that's an interesting coincidence, because FB has half of a stripper in his trunk.

John Justen, Saturday, 3 March 2007 01:21 (eighteen years ago)

I am drinking milk. :(

Only two questions left on my test and then I'm considering joining your party from afar. Probably not until late, though, if I do (must make sure children are ASLEEP).

Sara R-C, Saturday, 3 March 2007 01:22 (eighteen years ago)

Ooh, top or bottom? (Or is it left or right?)

HI DERE, Saturday, 3 March 2007 01:26 (eighteen years ago)

Wait, you mixed port with Jim Beam? Yuck. (But report the results anyway).

FB surely has several cross-sections of the stripper, adding up to half.

Sara R-C, Saturday, 3 March 2007 01:27 (eighteen years ago)

No, I considered mixing Jim Beam with port. Then I remembered that I need to be functional tomorrow.

HI DERE, Saturday, 3 March 2007 01:33 (eighteen years ago)

Functional is in the eye of the beholder, dude.

Oh wait, that probably makes it worse.

John Justen, Saturday, 3 March 2007 01:35 (eighteen years ago)

Hm, how functional do I need to be? J. just told me she "wants a sister." (NO.)

I have no plans, but two kids. But I do have champagne, beer, two bottles of red wine, vodka, tequila, triple sec, rum, dry vermouth, gin, Bailey's and a bunch of stuff that I can't remember (too short to see far into the cabinet). I think we have Harvey's Briston Creme for god's sake. What do you even do with that?

Really tempting to skip my workout and drink instead.

Sara R-C, Saturday, 3 March 2007 01:38 (eighteen years ago)

Damn. Ultra Biers.
Gladd half full of beer, fill rest with vodka.

Spite: Equal parts Poweraid, Popov, and flat Sprite.

It best lives up to its name when you drink it without ice somewhere around the third afternoon of a bad bender, so I would save it for Sunday morning brunch.

Drano makes me think of Heathers. "*CORN NUTS*"

Oh, A. also sends his compliments to the photographer.

Sara R-C, Saturday, 3 March 2007 04:42 (eighteen years ago)

Ultra Biers is legendary among some of my friends, which is why I'm JABBERING ABOUT IT.
It's best drank about the time you're too drunk to post on ILX.

I once called it 'The drink drunks drunk when they're drunk and want to be more drunk.'

Glad to see that someone has a blender.

And nice photographs, too!

Sara R-C, Saturday, 3 March 2007 17:16 (eighteen years ago)

"Glowstick" and "Bounce" sound awesome. I've played "Rock" before. We called it "Hit Rock". We also played a variation of "Rock" which involved throwing a huge rock to each other in a circle, while trying to take pulls off the square bottle.

strongohulkington, Saturday, 3 March 2007 17:32 (eighteen years ago)

i can't tell you how happy those pictures make me. this thread has redeemed my faith in ile.

strongohulkington, Saturday, 3 March 2007 17:32 (eighteen years ago)

last the bartender at my local made me what i have termed a "virgin nipsy russell" due to the substitution of tabasco for live habanero action.

strongohulkington, Saturday, 3 March 2007 17:34 (eighteen years ago)

i swear there was some other retarded habanero-esque ingredient like a candy cane or pcp or a pork chop, but I can’t remember now.

strongohulkington, Saturday, 3 March 2007 17:36 (eighteen years ago)

Fluffy Bear Hearts Rainbows, Saturday, 3 March 2007 19:56 (eighteen years ago)

Worst drink of the night: The Money Shot.

Thanks FB; your clarification has made it so that I can continue with my daily tasks.

Sara R-C, Saturday, 3 March 2007 20:02 (eighteen years ago)

Nipsy Russell may be one of my favorite drinks ever. We added a half-shot of simple syrup.

ghost rider, Monday, 5 March 2007 16:36 (eighteen years ago)

Dan, you will love the Nipsy. One of the primary effects of the drink is to wake you up and make you alert, eventually leading to bright and shining nonsense.

Fluffy Bear Hearts Rainbows, Monday, 5 March 2007 16:36 (eighteen years ago)

i am so glad i have bequeathed this drink to the world

strongohulkington, Monday, 5 March 2007 16:40 (eighteen years ago)

Our principal photographer did not overlook any details. A true journalist, she.

I like that they go from being really clear, to some blurry ones, and then back. They give it the photo essay a certain realism.

[i]also I have spilled coffee in my lap and now smell like wet dog, ugh[i]

What on earth sort of fabric are you wearing, Dan?

This will be documented with a video camera set up to take stills periodically, like, a webcam or something.

The before/after Nipsy Russell reactions remain the most priceless things I've seen on the Interweb this past week. I esp. like G's reaction!

HI DERE, Monday, 5 March 2007 19:40 (eighteen years ago)

Also, please note that while we broke off the stem, we did not remove any of the seeds. Dan, please try this as soon as possible and report back.

Fluffy Bear Hearts Rainbows, Monday, 5 March 2007 20:04 (eighteen years ago)

The increasing chaos as the chili oils dissolved in the alcohol spread across the pallate...
Makes ewant to try the bastard.

Windy G Moisture, Monday, 5 March 2007 20:13 (eighteen years ago)

Didn't remove the seeds... it does look like you just popped the whole thing in the blender. I didn't even think about the seeds. Was that really a habanero? I don't think I've ever even seen one in person!

Sara R-C, Monday, 5 March 2007 20:15 (eighteen years ago)

Also, do you want in on post travel wasted festivities?
keep in mind we won't stop until we're each dangling over the edge of a couch over a trash can, waiting to pass out.

Windy G Moisture, Monday, 5 March 2007 20:16 (eighteen years ago)

The corner Mexican grocery only had jalapenos, so I thought all was lost (virtually no planning went into this). Later, my roommate, M, unaware of our predicament, pulled out the habaneros as cocktail garnishes. He just keeps a few in the crisper at all times. Yay, serendipity (and insane roommate).

Fluffy Bear Hearts Rainbows, Monday, 5 March 2007 20:23 (eighteen years ago)

He keeps a few on hand? That is insane. I love it.

Sara R-C, Monday, 5 March 2007 20:26 (eighteen years ago)

Word up on that.

Windy G Moisture, Monday, 5 March 2007 20:33 (eighteen years ago)

Good ol' subgenius. He is a true hero.

HI DERE, Monday, 5 March 2007 20:37 (eighteen years ago)

This time, I say we start off with gummi alcohcoin.

John Justen, Monday, 5 March 2007 20:58 (eighteen years ago)

This time I say I be there!!!

Windy G Moisture, Monday, 5 March 2007 21:08 (eighteen years ago)

We should do this again. and again. and again.

With photo documentation for those in remote regions, plz.

Sara R-C, Monday, 5 March 2007 21:35 (eighteen years ago)

Of course. We have a lot of shots to go, but we would like some more suggestions, please.

Fluffy Bear Hearts Rainbows, Monday, 5 March 2007 21:41 (eighteen years ago)

I promise to contribute more suggestions. I will try to think of something that won't require special trips to buy expensive liquors that you otherwise would never buy.

Sara R-C, Monday, 5 March 2007 21:44 (eighteen years ago)

All I have left is Ultra Biers Deluxe. Instead of 50% vodka, 50% beer, it's 50% vodka, 50% vodka, 50% piss in pants.
A glass or two of vodka and that ratio makes sense.

Windy G Moisture, Monday, 5 March 2007 23:51 (eighteen years ago)

From my roommate: Flaming Jello Shot

Fluffy Bear Hearts Rainbows, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 19:53 (eighteen years ago)

Leave it to subgenius to go straight to the serious stuff (uh, he does remember that you were doing this in the house he lives in last time, right?).

I had been thinking along the sour or bitter taste axes myself...

Sara R-C, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 20:05 (eighteen years ago)

Also: Pies.

Fluffy Bear Hearts Rainbows, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 20:06 (eighteen years ago)

Traditional fruit pies, pumpkin, icebox pies... what sort?

Hmmm, I just got a cupcake cookbook. I bet you could easily make cupcakes and then infuse them with a shot somehow... hmmmm.

Sara R-C, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 20:07 (eighteen years ago)

(Don't think you can totally distract me from the notion of concocting a drink around sour pickles, though, FB.)

Sara R-C, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 20:08 (eighteen years ago)

No, M found recipes for alcoholic pies.

Fluffy Bear Hearts Rainbows, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 20:10 (eighteen years ago)

Really? What cookbooks is he looking at?!

(More seriously, they must not be pies that are baked because the alcohol would cook off - unless it's being added afterward somehow? Oooh pie flambe!)

Sara R-C, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 20:12 (eighteen years ago)

WHISKEY APPLE PIE

Ingredients:

1 apple pie
1 bottle of whiskey

Open bottle of whiskey. Pour over warm apple pie to taste. Serves 8.

HI DERE, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 20:18 (eighteen years ago)

elmo argonaut, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 20:18 (eighteen years ago)

I think the apple pie with the whiskey also needs ice cream.

Really REALLY scared by the pickle sports drink. (And yet so tempted to purchase for when A. starts training for this year's T.C. marathon... must... resist...)

Sara R-C, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 20:19 (eighteen years ago)

1 parts pickle sports drink
1 part pepper vodka
dash of tobasco

Any better golden pickle juice recipe ideas from our resident mixologists?

Fluffy Bear Hearts Rainbows, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 20:25 (eighteen years ago)

2 parts pickle juice

elmo argonaut, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 20:28 (eighteen years ago)

At last a use for that extra pickle juice in the fridge. (Dill pickle juice or sweet? Either!)

Sara R-C, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 20:29 (eighteen years ago)

"extra"?

HI DERE, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 20:31 (eighteen years ago)

The juice left from your jar of pickles, of course.

What am I thinking, though; surely you've been mixing that into drinks for years.

Sara R-C, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 20:35 (eighteen years ago)

john & fluffy, please report back whether pickle juice electrolytes are good hangover prevention

elmo argonaut, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 20:40 (eighteen years ago)

Sara R-C, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 20:42 (eighteen years ago)

Coming soon to Costco. Good. None of the other listed stores are in MN and I am not paying $18.00 plus $9.95 S&H for 12 bottles of pickle sports drink.

Fluffy Bear Hearts Rainbows, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 20:49 (eighteen years ago)

Also, from the website: Want to become an investor?

Um, NO.

Fluffy Bear Hearts Rainbows, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 20:50 (eighteen years ago)

There are no 7-11s in Minnesota??????

HI DERE, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 20:50 (eighteen years ago)

why wait for the commercially bottled derivative product when you can just use the real mccoy?

elmo argonaut, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 20:55 (eighteen years ago)

Which will not be a problem, once I become a molecular mixologist.

Fluffy Bear Hearts Rainbows, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 21:03 (eighteen years ago)

PICKLETINI:

1 jimmy of gin
1 swish of dry vermouth
1 squirtle of pickle juice
shaken on ice, strained into martini glass
(measurements not exact)

Please note: I have drank this and it is actually pretty good.

nickalicious, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 21:11 (eighteen years ago)

Very good. I've done this at home when olives are not to be found.

Fluffy Bear Hearts Rainbows, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 21:13 (eighteen years ago)

THE DILLDOZER:

salt the rim of a rock glass
1 part pickle juice
1 part club soda
2 parts pepper vodka
1 dash green tobasco

I THINK THIS NEEDS WORK, PEOPLE

Fluffy Bear Hearts Rainbows, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 21:18 (eighteen years ago)

It probably just needs more tobasco sauce.

Sara R-C, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 21:25 (eighteen years ago)

would using tonic instead of soda water make it even TANGIER!??

elmo argonaut, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 21:30 (eighteen years ago)

I thought about it, but quinine and pickles?!?!

We'll have to just try it, I suppose. We will have to do an experiment to perfect the recipe (with documentation of course).

Fluffy Bear Hearts Rainbows, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 21:37 (eighteen years ago)

Extra bonus with the tonic - a bit of extra protection from malaria...

Sara R-C, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 21:37 (eighteen years ago)

also, version numbers, i.e.

DILLDOZER 2.0 BETA

elmo argonaut, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 21:38 (eighteen years ago)

Of course pickled beets also remind me of my grandma. I wonder what else she has in her fridge that could go into a drink. (Sadly, I have to go to class, so I can't drive to visit her and find out right now. I will think about it, however.)

Sara R-C, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 21:49 (eighteen years ago)

Alright, pickled beet drink is a MUST.

HI DERE, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 22:17 (eighteen years ago)

Sock Puppet, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 22:38 (eighteen years ago)

NO IT SHOULD BE CALLED "THE RED WING"

HI DERE, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 22:39 (eighteen years ago)

The Red Wing should be drunk out of a work-boot.

Fluffy Bear Hearts Rainbows, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 22:43 (eighteen years ago)

Dude, I gotta get in on this.
I'm leaving for Japan in two weeks, and need to prepare.

Windy G Moisture, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 22:45 (eighteen years ago)

Nan-in, a Japanese master during the Meiji era (1868-1912), received a university professor who came to inquire about Zen.

Nan-in served tea. He poured his visitor's cup full, and then kept on pouring.

The professor watched the overflow until he no longer could restrain himself. "It is overfull. No more will go in!"

"Like this cup," Nan-in said, "you are full of your own opinions and speculations. How can I show you Zen unless you first empty your cup?"

Fluffy Bear Hearts Rainbows, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 22:48 (eighteen years ago)

The problem is, he was serving tea.
He should have been serving Namazake(I think it's called). It's first-pressing sake and it's milky-white.
That gives me some great ideas for drinks, but it's expensive as fuck.

When one goes to Obaku temple in Kyoto he sees carved over the gate the words "The First Principle". The letters are unusually large, and those who appreciate calligraphy always admire them as being a mastepiece. They were drawn by Kosen two hundred years ago.

When the master drew them he did so on paper, from which the workmen made the large carving in wood. As Kosen sketched the letters a bold pupil was with him who had made several gallons of ink for the calligraphy and who never failed to criticise his master's work.

"That is not good," he told Kosen after his first effort.

"How is this one?"

"Poor. Worse than before," pronounced the pupil.

Kosen patiently wrote one sheet after another until eighty-four First Principles had accumulated, still without the approval of the pupil.

Then when the young man stepped outside for a few moments, Kosen thought: "Now this is my chance to escape his keen eye," and he wrote hurriedly, with a mind free from distraction: "The First Principle."

"A masterpiece," pronounced the pupil.

This is why Esoteric/Zen/Other Specific Buddhism isn't real high on my priority list for studies. *shrug*
3 parts Sake
1 part V8
2 celery stalks

Hippie Tears.

MY RECIPE FOR A SAKITINI:

Equal parts dry saki and ginger-infused vodka.

Zen masters give personal gidance in a secluded room. No one enters while teacher and pupil are together.

Mokurai, the Zen master of Kennin temple in Kyoto, used ot enjoy talking with merchants and newspapermen as well as with his pupils. A certain tubmaker was almost illiterate. He would ask foolish questions of Mokurai, have tea, and then go away.

One day while the tubmaker was there Mokurai wished to give personal guidance to a disciple, so he asked the tubmaker to wait in another room.

"I understand you are a living Buddha," the man protested. "Even the stone Buddhas in the temple never refuse the numerous persons who come together before them. Why then should I be excluded?"

Mokurai had to go outside to see his disciple.

All this zen mumbo-jumbo better be leading up to a drink recipe.

John Justen, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 00:07 (eighteen years ago)

1 part gin
1 hand clapping

Fluffy Bear Hearts Rainbows, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 00:26 (eighteen years ago)

from ilovepickles.org:

"You've heard of squeezing a wedge of lime into your beer. Now, adding some dill pickle juice to your brew could be the next craze. Stir 1/8 cup dill pickle liquid into 12 ounces of your favorite beer and garnish with a pickle spear or baby dill."

unlikely.

Clamato is a popular mixer for mass-market American and Canadian beer. It is also used as a base for the alcoholic Bloody Caesar, a vodka cocktail invented in 1969 when bartender Walter Chell was challenged to create a new cocktail to celebrate the opening of Marco's, the new restaurant at the Westin Hotel in Calgary, Alberta. The Bloody Caesar is commonly regarded as the national cocktail of Canada. While the original Caesar, invented the year Duffy-Mott introduced Clamato, was made with tomato juice and mashed clams, Clamato (properly referred to as "Mott's Clamato" in Canada) is now the common base for the drink. The Caesar has become so popular that Mott's now markets multiple varieties of pre-mixed Caesars in 341 ml (12-ounce) bottles. The Bloody Caesar is Canada's most popular cocktail, with over 250 million selling every year. 82% of the Caesar-drinking households in Canada use Mott's Clamato as the base.

Wow, Canada, you are wicked gross!

i had been looking around for fake blood recipes for kickball purposes. this could obviously be improved:

THE AUNT FLO (shot)

vanilla vodka
cream
cocoa powder (blended in to deepen color & opacity)
red food coloring (plenty)
blue food dye (1 drop)

serve in a "keeper":

"for kickball purposes"

Where were you people when I needed to get out of Mr. T4ff3's gym class anyway.

Sara R-C, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 15:49 (eighteen years ago)

I'm on a team in the Providence Kickball League -- which is more of an excuse to engage in public drinking and over-the-top theatrical nonsense than any sort of athletic contest. My team is named ZOMBOREE. We dress as zombies. Fake blood is essential to this endeavor.

elmo argonaut, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 15:59 (eighteen years ago)

That is hilarious!

It is too bad this does not happen closer to MN. I have a friend who is just terrified of zombies and I would so love to drive her past a game of "zombies" playing kickball. Please tell me that there are photos somewhere I could show her.

elmo argonaut, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 16:16 (eighteen years ago)

it should be brain-related, with gummy worms in it

gbx, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 16:20 (eighteen years ago)

You could call it "the Romero." And when you drink it, you could chant, "braaaaaaaains..."

Sara R-C, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 16:22 (eighteen years ago)

Well, there's that "bloody brain" thing, but that seems too pedestrian for our needs.

Sara R-C, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 16:35 (eighteen years ago)

Melon balls floating in gin and grenadine. Pop in a chuck of slim jim and call it the testicular cancer. I was originally going for eyeballs, but, you know, wherever the muse leads me.

Fluffy Bear Hearts Rainbows, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 16:35 (eighteen years ago)

My google searching also turned that up as the "Abortion", BTW.

Fluffy Bear Hearts Rainbows, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 16:38 (eighteen years ago)

John Justen, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 16:39 (eighteen years ago)

Ugh, you guys.

There is, of course, the rum and fruit juice drink called "the Zombie," but I know how some of you feel about rum. You could base something on it, though.

Sara R-C, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 16:41 (eighteen years ago)

Fire in the hole and the abortion look good, but the bloody tampon is for dilettantes. We're drinking that time of the month (made with beet juice) through a folded flank steak, and we're doing stunt-shots of the aunt flo out of squibs made out of condoms and black cats.

In theory.

Fluffy Bear Hearts Rainbows, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 17:01 (eighteen years ago)

Elk Spit: Vodka, jagermeister, splash of soda, served in a pint glass w/out ice.
Zombie: Everything you can grab from the "condiments" section of the fridge door, combined with vodka, and some tomato juice. In a pint glass. No ice.
Straws will be accepted. Excessive use of straws is NOT within the rules. GO!

aimurchie, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 17:04 (eighteen years ago)

Windy G Moisture, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 22:27 (eighteen years ago)

I don't think that's necessary.

HI DERE, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 22:28 (eighteen years ago)

1 part butterscotch schnapps

elmo argonaut, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 22:34 (eighteen years ago)

elmo argonaut, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 22:36 (eighteen years ago)

Problem is, all the other alcohol I had in the house has already been consumed by the aforementioned roommate, and I don't have time after work to get to the liquor store (oh yeah, lets give out a big fuck you to 8PM Minnesota closing times, while we're at it.) So it either needs to be a mixer of the convenience store variety, or I need to mix shitty scotch with more shitty scotch.

John Justen, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 22:38 (eighteen years ago)

John, you know I've always been a big fan of shitty scotch, but you could call a certain girlfriend who would most likely pick up beer for you if you asked.

(I happen to be said girlfriend, BTW. don't let the name change fool you)

Caledonia, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 22:42 (eighteen years ago)

HAH! exposed.

We could just drink shitty scotch then, and call it a day.

John Justen, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 22:47 (eighteen years ago)

Good luck guys. (BTW. MN law does not say that liquor stores have to close at 8. I'm pretty sure H.O.W. is still open until at least 9 on weeknights - possibly 10. Not that this helps you, I'm just sayin', don't blame the state. Maybe a local ordinance, though.)

Sara R-C, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 23:35 (eighteen years ago)

(You can blame the state for the ridiculous "can't be open on Sunday" thing, of course.)

Sara R-C, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 23:39 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, it's a local ordinance deal. But really, 10 PM? Sundays closed? WTF?

John Justen, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 23:40 (eighteen years ago)

Over here in RI, we only got liquor stores open on Sundays as recently as a year or so ago, I think! A real pain in the ass, also led to lots of folks driving dangerously drunk to the liquor store on Saturday nights before closing.

elmo argonaut, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 23:46 (eighteen years ago)

It drives my father absolutely crazy to see business on Sundays - and especially holidays that land on Sundays - be heading to Wisconsin. On the other hand, the man's a workaholic and I think if he didn't have a day off forced on him once a week, he'd probably already be dead.

At any rate, the laws are old and there's really no good reason for them; they aren't laws that could be made today. Getting rid of an old law that has stood for a long time is harder.

Sara R-C, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 23:48 (eighteen years ago)

Getting rid of an old law that has stood for a long time the DT's on Sunday is harder.

John Justen, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 23:53 (eighteen years ago)

Yet another reason that forethought and planning is so important.

Sara R-C, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 23:55 (eighteen years ago)

Beer (you know, the fancy kind available in bottles and 12 packs) of unknown nature is being obtained as we speak. If it is a pale ale, and the scotch is intolerable enough, I will drink:

THE HOPSCOTCH

1 part hoppy beer
1 part shitty scotch
(mixture to be fine tuned as required)

John Justen, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 23:59 (eighteen years ago)

I could see hopscotch being tasty actually and catching on, that's a great name.

nickalicious, Thursday, 8 March 2007 00:08 (eighteen years ago)

It would have to be a really skunky beer though like bottled Heine, to offset the band-aid taste of the scotch.

nickalicious, Thursday, 8 March 2007 00:08 (eighteen years ago)

Should I use the remaining cans of black label I hid in my sock drawer for yours, then?

John Justen, Thursday, 8 March 2007 00:09 (eighteen years ago)

So sad that I'm not making that up.

Also, that was an xpost to HI DERE.

John Justen, Thursday, 8 March 2007 00:09 (eighteen years ago)

You can do that only if you wire me some money.

HI DERE, Thursday, 8 March 2007 00:10 (eighteen years ago)

Now I have to go somewhere and buy lemon juice.

John Justen, Thursday, 8 March 2007 00:10 (eighteen years ago)

What's this extortion crap all about?

John Justen, Thursday, 8 March 2007 00:12 (eighteen years ago)

Six months into this project, you're going to have the weirdest assortment of half-used beverages and food products ever.

We always have lemon juice on hand, come to think of it. But I can't figure out why!

Sara R-C, Thursday, 8 March 2007 00:12 (eighteen years ago)

What's this extortion crap all about?

I'm thinking that was a direct result of the allusion to your sock drawer. Just a guess.

Sara R-C, Thursday, 8 March 2007 00:14 (eighteen years ago)

Oh, I see, you're confusing Johnnie Walker Black Label (which I don't own) with canned Carling Black Label beer, which is what I'm talking about.

John Justen, Thursday, 8 March 2007 00:14 (eighteen years ago)

John, have you checked yr Myspace profile lately...?

HI DERE, Thursday, 8 March 2007 00:17 (eighteen years ago)

UH.

Why? Did P3rry post a picture of himself drinking out of my sock drawer?

John Justen, Thursday, 8 March 2007 00:20 (eighteen years ago)

No but he did post asking you for money; I figured if you were passing out cash, I wanted in.

HI DERE, Thursday, 8 March 2007 00:21 (eighteen years ago)

(It was a C- humor attempt, I admit)

HI DERE, Thursday, 8 March 2007 00:22 (eighteen years ago)

I wish I had a sock drawer right now.

Windy G Moisture, Thursday, 8 March 2007 00:27 (eighteen years ago)

Fluffy Bear Hearts Rainbows, Thursday, 8 March 2007 15:12 (eighteen years ago)

Ulver:
2parts Jager
1part whatever looks most like blood you have nearby
1part of something Sparkling
drink from a wine glass or brandy snifter in a fur coat

Windy G Moisture, Thursday, 8 March 2007 15:29 (eighteen years ago)

If the Ugh Gross was not ugh gross, you didn't make it correctly.

HI DERE, Thursday, 8 March 2007 15:39 (eighteen years ago)

Both drinks delayed by lack of ingredients (beer purchased was PBR, no lemon juice.) I can report that the Scotch on it's own tastes like cheap steak with a cigarette stubbed out in it. Laced with ether.

I'll get lemon juice tonight (apparently not readily available at Superamerica, where I do the majority of my grocery shopping.)

John Justen, Thursday, 8 March 2007 18:16 (eighteen years ago)

Actually, maybe this is another use for that golden pickle sports drink. Don't forget; it has electrolytes and everything.

Sara R-C, Thursday, 8 March 2007 18:28 (eighteen years ago)

The amazing thing about the shitty scotch is how long the aftertaste just lingered . . . and that, instead of that warming sensation which usually accompanies scotch, there was this chemically burn.

I would say that in the case of good scotch v. shitty scotch the Warm v. Burn of the drink was the equivalent of Smoke v. Liquid Smoke. (wait, what?)

Actually, that shitty scotch would go quite well with the shitty sausage (liquid smoke!), shitty cheese, and shitty crackers found in those shitty holiday food packages.

Caledonia, Thursday, 8 March 2007 22:01 (eighteen years ago)

That sounds like the perfect idea for a post-holiday theme party.

(I might be puzzling over your analogy for the next week, however.)

DEVELOPING...

John Justen, Saturday, 10 March 2007 20:19 (eighteen years ago)

Since when did you turn into Matt Drudge?

I was trying to think of something you could do with Mountain Dew, but couldn't imagine what you could add to that. Well, other than tobasco sauce and/or rum, of course. I'll have to give it more consideration.

Sara R-C, Saturday, 10 March 2007 21:32 (eighteen years ago)

Before VodkaRedBull, there was VodkaMountainDew!

HI DERE, Saturday, 10 March 2007 21:37 (eighteen years ago)

elmo argonaut, Saturday, 10 March 2007 21:55 (eighteen years ago)

I don't know what's wrong with me, but that almost sounds good right now. And I love the name!

Sara R-C, Saturday, 10 March 2007 22:06 (eighteen years ago)

Tonight's the night. Round two. I don't want to spoil any surprises, but I can guarantee the presence of at least two drink ingredients.

1) 151
2) Meat.

See you in a few hours.

Everyone gets Chambord from me for Xmas this year.

We had leftover "That Time of The Month", so our guest mixologist, Nyssa, mixed it with Baileys, and my brother, Jon, christened it, "The Bloody Stool".

I am really eager to see photos of you guys funnelling drinks with a folded flank-steak once you recover.

elmo argonaut, Monday, 12 March 2007 03:36 (eighteen years ago)

I'll provide more detailed comment later, but my roommate and I just got cut off at a bar called "The Happy Gnome". I have no idea how to react to this. I've got nothing for you, but these pictures from last night. Unfortunately, elmo, we did not drink the wonderful "That Time of the Month" from a folded flank steak. I ate a flaming cube of SPAM infused with Bacardi 151, and John did a shot of 151 infused with SPAM. He chose poorly and attempted to dilute the SPAM rum with, well you'll see, some pretty interesting ingredients.

First, the flaming SPAM:

I think the line between bravery and insanity has been definitively crossed here. Not that that's a bad thing.

Sara R-C, Monday, 12 March 2007 12:56 (eighteen years ago)

That swelling feeling in my chest is either pride or disgust. NEXT LEVEL, GUYS. Way to go.

elmo argonaut, Monday, 12 March 2007 13:10 (eighteen years ago)

So that last shot was:

SPAM infused rum
pickle juice
worcestershire cause
soy sauce
and... maraschino cherry syrup??

Up until that last ingredient, the recipie was making some sort of perverse, salty SENSE. But no... oh no. OH NO. Fuck. Cherry juice. You poor bastard.

elmo argonaut, Monday, 12 March 2007 13:23 (eighteen years ago)

"Recipe". I never spell that one right.

elmo argonaut, Monday, 12 March 2007 13:24 (eighteen years ago)

Cherry juice was a suggestion from an onlooker, and I am sort of pliable when drunk.

Sara R-C, Monday, 12 March 2007 16:54 (eighteen years ago)

John, who ever told you to add the cherry juice? Having taken all of the photos that prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that you are the worst mixologist ever, all I remember is discouraging you from your . . . umm . . . interesting (?) choices.

Good times, though. Very good times.

PS I really fuckin' hate beets.

Caledonia, Monday, 12 March 2007 17:05 (eighteen years ago)

Nice photos again, btw. And you're a better person than me if you tried the drink with the beet juice in it and you already hated beets. Blargh.

The "Dirty Rollie Fingers"

1pt vodka
1pt pickled egg brine

Tabasco to taste, pickled jalapeno garnish.

Actually, I think that's probably not a bad idea. Obviously, most of these are stunt drinks, but the beet shot was pretty good. We could, in theory, come up with new gourmet drinks. I think I'm going to continue experimenting with a few of these, and by that I don't mean SPAM-infused 151.

Fluffy Bear Hearts Rainbows, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 15:00 (eighteen years ago)

Finding pickled egg brine might be a pain?

Have you ever been to a dive with a huge jar of pickled eggs behind the bar? They always looked so menacing, like blank preserved eyes, bobbing in their brine, and they probably induce the most toxic farts. Egads.

That's where you draw the line?!

Sara R-C, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 19:11 (eighteen years ago)

I'll do the warm shot with butter. Because I'm not a lame pussy.

John Justen, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 19:20 (eighteen years ago)

I think I'll finally get around to "The Hopscotch" later today, out of boredom.

Also, due to St. Patricks day this weekend, we probably won't have another installment of this series until next weekend. Although I suppose we could do some of the more "standard" (read: meat-free) ones in bars, if we had an understanding and patient bartender with a cruel streak.

FB, are we still on for Luce tomorrow? And do they have booze, or just beer and wine?

John Justen, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 19:24 (eighteen years ago)

In honor ot St. Patrick's Day, Irish-descended people should begin dying all of their drinks green, regardless of butter content. Or just drink green drinks.

(Actually, I'm going to make some green cupcakes with Bailey's Irish cream in the icing. This is going to be way better than the year that A. dyed the white sandwich bread green.)

Sara R-C, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 19:43 (eighteen years ago)

Speaking as a genuine Irisher-type, if anyone ever serves me a green drink on St. Patrick's Day, I will fucking shiv them.

HI DERE, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 20:15 (eighteen years ago)

John, I see your temper is still... well, I won't go there.

Sara R-C, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 20:23 (eighteen years ago)

Why I responded to the Griswold like that and not the beet shot poured through a flank steak, I can not explain. It just was. I just ate, an I am full. That might have something to do with it

(At first I read that as "lol at the Griswold decision", and I was like damn, I didn't know Dan was anti-choice.)

Fluffy Bear Hearts Rainbows, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 20:24 (eighteen years ago)

John you feeb, green drinks are awesome.

HI DERE, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 20:25 (eighteen years ago)

They can be green because they have green stuff in them, but green food coloring in your Miller Lite = YOU FUCKING DIE.

John Justen, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 20:28 (eighteen years ago)

what about lobster-infused rum? that might be marginally better with melted butter.

elmo argonaut, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 20:30 (eighteen years ago)

Isn't there butter in hot-buttered rum?

John does not object to grasshoppers or anything else with green creme de menthe. How to combine with butter, though. I'll leave it for better minds than mine.

Sara R-C, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 20:30 (eighteen years ago)

something about a warm, buttery shot...

1 part clam broth
1 part vodka
1 pat butter

serve warm

Fluffy Bear Hearts Rainbows, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 20:31 (eighteen years ago)

They can be green because they have green stuff in them, but green food coloring in your Miller Lite = YOU FUCKING DIE.

HI DERE, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 20:31 (eighteen years ago)

something about a warm, buttery shot...

Fluffy Bear Hearts Rainbows, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 20:39 (eighteen years ago)

Not that flexible, also do not have vagina.

FB might be able to pull it off after a vigorous stretching regimen, though.

Back to business, guys.

"Bloody Nonsense"

2 parts hot salsa
1 part vodka

Sara R-C, Monday, 19 March 2007 21:02 (eighteen years ago)

Or we serve it up as shots in those scoop chips.

It would make fewer dishes, true.

Sara R-C, Monday, 19 March 2007 21:06 (eighteen years ago)

John and Subgenius and I enjoyed this cocktail this evening. Very refreshing. Subgenius (my roommate) put this together based on a drink he had years ago in Manhattan.

Fluffy Bear Hearts Rainbows, Sunday, 25 March 2007 05:27 (eighteen years ago)

That looks like what I imagine Milk of Magnesia to look like.

What does calpico taste like? (I'm not a fan of sake.)

Fluffy Bear Hearts Rainbows, Thursday, 29 March 2007 15:57 (eighteen years ago)

I'm doing another take home test this week and will therefore attempt to contribute another recipe.

"recipe"

Sara R-C, Thursday, 29 March 2007 16:20 (eighteen years ago)

Alright, I'm reiterating my request for a drink recipe for "8080" or "Blood Diamonds", you fuckers.

John Justen, Friday, 30 March 2007 21:29 (eighteen years ago)

I can't help you with those, but I think my next suggestion will be a little game.

Begin with a base of either tomato juice or chocolate milk. Tie a blindfold around the victim, er I mean drinker's eyes. Lead them to a table where several bottles of different types of booze have been arranged (while they are unable to see). Concoct a drink with a 1:1 ratio of the first three bottles they touch, plus either the chocolate milk or the tomato juice. It's up to you to decide whether or not they get to choose between the milk and the tomato juice.

Sara R-C, Friday, 30 March 2007 21:35 (eighteen years ago)

BLOOD DIAMONDS

3 parts champagne
1 part Chambord

Serve over crushed ice.

8080

2 parts 151 rum
1 part apple liquer
1 part cinnamon liquer

Shake with ice. Serve in martini glass

HI DERE, Friday, 30 March 2007 21:56 (eighteen years ago)

Get thee to a liquor store.

Sara R-C, Friday, 30 March 2007 22:11 (eighteen years ago)

What is like Chambord, but costs less?

John Justen, Friday, 30 March 2007 22:15 (eighteen years ago)

Not trying to be an ingrate, but unless FB really wants to own chambord, I'm voting for:

3 - Parts Sparkling domestic lager
1 - part high-tensile booze
1 - part grenadine. Or blood. Something red, anyway.

as a blood diamonds alternative.

John Justen, Friday, 30 March 2007 22:17 (eighteen years ago)

Chambord is a raspberry liquer right? Perhaps for these purposes, you could use raspberry schnapps. NOT THE SAME THING, but at least it could save you from grenadine or blood. (Or wait, how about more cherry juice?)

Apparently there IS a cheaper version of Chambord, but neither of my parents could remember the name. I'm not calling them again about this today; I'm sure they're wondering what I'm up to.

Sara R-C, Friday, 30 March 2007 22:23 (eighteen years ago)

raspberry liqueur = framboise liqueur = liqueur de framboise Notes: This is great in champagne or on ice cream. Chambord is a popular brand. Don't confuse this with framboise, a raspberry brandy. Substitutes: crème de cassis OR orange liqueur OR raspberry extract (1 teaspoon raspberry extract = 2 tablespoons raspberry liqueur)

Crème de cassis is acceptable.

HI DERE, Friday, 30 March 2007 22:37 (eighteen years ago)

CSS (Cranberry Schnapps Schnapps)

2 parts cranberry juice
2 parts peach schnapps
2 parts apple schnapps

HI DERE, Friday, 30 March 2007 22:39 (eighteen years ago)

I can lend you sippy cups, if you promise to drink out of them. They have such cute little cartoon characters on them.

Sara R-C, Friday, 30 March 2007 22:40 (eighteen years ago)

Rim a shot glass with sugar. Fill with bourbon. Shoot and headbutt your nearest friend.

HI DERE, Friday, 30 March 2007 22:42 (eighteen years ago)

Fluffy Bear Hearts Rainbows, Saturday, 31 March 2007 16:00 (eighteen years ago)

Oh shit. There's cheap raspberry liquor out there. That means we have to redo That Time of the Month.

Sara R-C, Saturday, 31 March 2007 16:16 (eighteen years ago)

John Justen, Saturday, 31 March 2007 19:26 (eighteen years ago)

I really don't want to think about this.

Sara R-C, Saturday, 31 March 2007 19:50 (eighteen years ago)

Speaking of which:

ROCK MUSIC

3 parts tequila
1 part grenadine
rock salt

Shake tequila and grenadine with ice. Sprinkle rock salt into a high ball glass and pour drink over it. Garnish with lime rind shavings.

HI DERE, Saturday, 31 March 2007 23:50 (eighteen years ago)

Fluffy Bear Hearts Rainbows, Sunday, 1 April 2007 06:17 (eighteen years ago)

While I do not know your roommate well, I have always found him to be unfailingly charming and civilized. Of course I still adore you, FB; but I can admire someone else's grammar.

(Also it might be time for FB to go lie down. It's difficult to tell for sure from this distance.)

Sara R-C, Sunday, 1 April 2007 06:27 (eighteen years ago)

John has to go home. I am misunderestimated. Why do you people hate flare?

Fluffy Bear Hearts Rainbows, Tuesday, 3 April 2007 17:54 (eighteen years ago)

Salsa shot was PURE CRAP NO NO NO.

Although worse things were on the way.

If you look really carefully in the pictures to come, you can start to see the point where I start to slip away into the magical non-verbal fantasy world that lives inside all of us when we get really really stinko drunk.

John Justen, Tuesday, 3 April 2007 18:02 (eighteen years ago)

I am not going to apologize for the salsa shot; those expressions on your faces are comedy gold.

BLOOD DIAMONDS

3 parts champagne
1 part Chambord
raspberry liqueur

Serve over crushed ice.

http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m64/eljeffebonanza/IMG_0876.jpg

OK, we fucked this up. First, not enough ice--the glass should be half to three quarters full of crushed ice to live up to the name. Second, the cheap raspberry liqueur was not red enough, and we couldn't find the grenadine, so we added cranberry juice.

It tasted fine, but it was not Blood Diamonds.

We will have to do this again, properly.

Fluffy Bear Hearts Rainbows, Tuesday, 3 April 2007 18:10 (eighteen years ago)

HI DERE, Tuesday, 3 April 2007 18:39 (eighteen years ago)

Dudes, use real Chambord and have grenadine on hand to experiment. Fill the glasses half full with ice. Note: it is easier to pour the champagne into the glass and then add the ice. The champagne will fizz when pored over ice.

wow, i didn't know ILE was still worth checking out!

i drank 2 enlisted men while reading through this thread.

all the talk of golden pickle juice reminds me of this drink i came up with called the Lazy Turtle.

1 Part Vodka
2 parts Zing Zang Bloody Mary Mix
3 or 4 pickle juice ice cubes (i prefer to use juice from those single serving "spicy" pickles that you get from convenience stores)
allow cubes to melt some before drinking

HI DERE, Tuesday, 3 April 2007 19:43 (eighteen years ago)

We return to Mike's flight of home-made vodka infusions.

ltr: ginger, kiwi, cucumber, kumquats, habañero (previously mislabeled as jalapeño), pineapple.

http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m64/eljeffebonanza/IMG_0864.jpg

We already tried the pineapple infusion. In the following picture, Mike is feeding John a tablespoon of habañero-infused vodka.

http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m64/eljeffebonanza/IMG_0877.jpg

Mike and John both suffered from hiccups.

Mike feeds John a tablespoon of habanero-infused vodka.

Fluffy Bear Hearts Rainbows, Tuesday, 3 April 2007 19:56 (eighteen years ago)

oh dudes brian fed us all shots of habanero-infused vodka without telling us first what it was last week or two weeks ago or something. it was intense.

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Tuesday, 3 April 2007 20:00 (eighteen years ago)

a) it was serrano-infused
b) it's not like you couldn't smell it a mile off, the contents were not a mystery!

I DIED, Tuesday, 3 April 2007 20:02 (eighteen years ago)

none of us could figure it out, keep in mind you gave these shots to three smokers!

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Tuesday, 3 April 2007 20:05 (eighteen years ago)

i'm not complaining btw, i said it was "intense"!!

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Tuesday, 3 April 2007 20:05 (eighteen years ago)

I have plenty left, we have to convert it to asparagus bloody marys.

I DIED, Tuesday, 3 April 2007 20:06 (eighteen years ago)

YES that is the best idea anyone's had all day actually.

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Tuesday, 3 April 2007 20:08 (eighteen years ago)

I was about to say, that sounds like it would rule in a bloody mary. goddammit, I need a bloody mary with pickled asparagus before this day is over. I've been thinking about them all day.

horseshoe, Tuesday, 3 April 2007 20:08 (eighteen years ago)

The last time Mike made this infusion, he used dried, crystallized habanero. Mark punched me when I fed him a quarter-shot. John almost stopped speaking to us.

They were not joking. They were seriously aggravated.

Fluffy Bear Hearts Rainbows, Tuesday, 3 April 2007 20:09 (eighteen years ago)

I so want to send my friend Curt to one of your drinking experiment parties. But without explaining what is going on. He's always putting weird stuff in drinks without warning people. Also, he mixes really strong drinks. I would really enjoy the pictures of that.

you can use some other cinnamon schnapps if you must but you won't have the gold flecks. this drink should also contain a shake of cayenne powder.

Also, would you be so kind as to post a couple DC blood diamonds pics? What was your best working recipe?

Fluffy Bear Hearts Rainbows, Monday, 9 April 2007 21:58 (eighteen years ago)

I think maybe it's dependant upon the champagne? Like maybe if you'd used prosecco instead that would have worked better? (Or something not quite as powerful as Chambord?)

Triple V

2 ounces of vodka
splash of vinegar of your choice (plain vinegar, apple cider vinegar, fancy infused vinegar, whatever)

Chase with a vitamin E capsule for antioxidant goodness, or vitamin C if you think you might be coming down with a cold.

Sara R-C, Wednesday, 11 April 2007 20:13 (eighteen years ago)

BALSAMIC VINEGAR

HI DERE, Wednesday, 11 April 2007 20:57 (eighteen years ago)

elmo argonaut, Wednesday, 11 April 2007 21:08 (eighteen years ago)

We did the 8080 with Ian tonight. Mixed by the bartender at Pizza Luce. Tasted like apple pie. Very ripe apple pie. Ian said it was unnaturally wet. It was somehow exceedingly wet, like a chemical created by beings that had only read about water. Like a slime mold that excreted an apple pie oil as a defense against predators.

Fluffy Bear Hearts Rainbows, Thursday, 12 April 2007 06:39 (eighteen years ago)

I spent about half an hour searching through the entire thread a couple of times to find the 8080 recipe yesterday before giving it up as a bad job. (Yes, I will waste time if given the chance.)

Even if the whole thread is loaded, there's a lot to go through and it's easy to miss the one thing you're trying to find...

Sara R-C, Thursday, 12 April 2007 18:43 (eighteen years ago)

Sara R-C, Thursday, 12 April 2007 18:53 (eighteen years ago)

John Justen, Thursday, 12 April 2007 18:54 (eighteen years ago)

wait the 8080 is that thing Ally makes during christmas season every year.

???!!! It sounded more like a spring drink to me, but that was likely due to the talk about plants.

John, calculators are not that expensive, BUY ONE and spare yourself worry.

Sara R-C, Thursday, 12 April 2007 18:55 (eighteen years ago)

It was conceived to taste like an apple pie in honor of the Whiskey Apple Pie I created earlier upthread.

HI DERE, Thursday, 12 April 2007 18:57 (eighteen years ago)

(Also the rum may be what is skewing the taste; you could try it with vodka instead.)

HI DERE, Thursday, 12 April 2007 18:57 (eighteen years ago)

For some reason that makes me think you should be required to serve it on President's Day. Imbibers should be forced to sing Yankee Doodle Dandy at least twice.

Sara R-C, Thursday, 12 April 2007 18:58 (eighteen years ago)

John, we overpaid, mostly because I was adamant that the 18% gratuity was not enough when clearly it was. Actually, some of us overpaid. Some of us didn't pay anything at all. Ahem. Cough. Cough.

John Justen, Thursday, 26 April 2007 23:32 (eighteen years ago)

I don't think you can blame yourself for the existence of Southern Comfort, John. And you didn't start that thread, either.

But life is unfair; drink it anyway. Oh, you could mix it with RUM!

Sara R-C, Friday, 27 April 2007 02:09 (eighteen years ago)

you know, for the record, the drink tom was talking about as being the 8080, what i make is apple cider, apple rum, and cinnamon schnapps.

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Friday, 27 April 2007 04:48 (eighteen years ago)

Well now you tell us.

John Justen, Friday, 27 April 2007 04:49 (eighteen years ago)

I also feel that you are on my drunken grammar team at this point in the evening.

John Justen, Friday, 27 April 2007 04:51 (eighteen years ago)

WHO IS FLUFFY BEAR

i think im prolly going to bed im at the stage of drunkeness where you have to close one eye to see clearly what level is everyone else at

(lets say out of 10 & im an 8.5)

deeznuts, Friday, 27 April 2007 04:53 (eighteen years ago)

ok upon reviewing that post im probably more like a 9

deeznuts, Friday, 27 April 2007 04:54 (eighteen years ago)

SHOOT FOR THE STARS!

John Justen, Friday, 27 April 2007 04:55 (eighteen years ago)

I'm actually only at about a 7, so I mean that as an inspiration, not a challenge.

John Justen, Friday, 27 April 2007 04:57 (eighteen years ago)

ive heard if you miss you hit the moon which is supposedly a good thing

i call of these theories into question tho

xp

deeznuts, Friday, 27 April 2007 04:57 (eighteen years ago)

deeznuts, I like your style.

John Justen, Friday, 27 April 2007 04:59 (eighteen years ago)

the moon has clearly been hit by a shitload of meteors, just think if neil armstrong was vaporized on live tv.."that's one small for" [instant death, no grammatical error, its extrapolated to a statement that no one ever feels any guilt whatsover about because the guy who was surely about to utter it is DEAD)

deeznuts, Friday, 27 April 2007 05:02 (eighteen years ago)

aarghk "one small step for" even my fictional neil fucked it up

John Justen, Friday, 27 April 2007 05:06 (eighteen years ago)

deeznuts, Friday, 27 April 2007 05:08 (eighteen years ago)

Well, if this isn't reason to design a "moonshot", I don't know what is.

John Justen, Friday, 27 April 2007 05:11 (eighteen years ago)

o shit yr right cuz well land among the STARS (IF we miss, & im an optimist, i think were gonna smack right into that fucking moon but thats not a bad alternative)

i think i got that backwards before

so yeah lets GO FOR IT!!! HIGH FIVE!!! ive never wished more that it was possible to do the one-two-three-YEAH! thing over the internet

deeznuts, Friday, 27 April 2007 05:16 (eighteen years ago)

I think you should do something with this product, which my kids got from my parents on Easter:

Sipahh Straws

Yeah, they're ridiculous and drinking milk through them makes the milk taste revolting, but maybe integrating them with some kind of booze would give them a purpose.

Sara R-C, Friday, 27 April 2007 17:39 (eighteen years ago)

three weeks pass...

1 part Johnny Walker Black Label
fill with ginger ale
splash with grenadine
and garnish with a maraschino cherry

LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, I GIVE YOU ... THE SHIRLEY TEMPLE BLACK

It's people like you that make the world magic.

John Justen, Monday, 21 May 2007 20:43 (eighteen years ago)

is there any truth to the rumors i heard of a JJ-FB east coast summer tour? i will get you drunk in PVD

elmo argonaut, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 07:49 (eighteen years ago)

two weeks pass...

So I came up with an awesome drink name but I'm having trouble figuring out what would go into it. Tell me, people, what goes into a NEFERTINI??

ideally, i think you'd have to use black vodka.

elmo argonaut, Thursday, 7 June 2007 16:33 (eighteen years ago)

Copied and pasted for cataloging purposes:

2 Parts Ouzo
1 Part Whipping Cream
1 Part Italian Dressing.

I shall call it "THE SKULLFUCK".

John Justen, Thursday, 7 June 2007 21:19 (eighteen years ago)

Nice organization skillz!

Sara R-C, Thursday, 7 June 2007 21:21 (eighteen years ago)

Wow, that Blavod commercial.

kenan, Thursday, 7 June 2007 21:23 (eighteen years ago)

Blavod is suprisingly good, as I recall.

John Justen, Thursday, 7 June 2007 22:38 (eighteen years ago)

I cannot take credit for this, but then I can deny blame. This is a drink named after a character in Maryjanice Davidson's Undead series, created for her by a fan.

The SINK-lair*

Grenadine
Apple Pucker
Jagermeister

Layer so that you can see all three colors.

(I'm assuming this is a 1:1:1 ratio here.)

*actual character name is Eric Sinclair.

Sara R-C, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 04:58 (eighteen years ago)

Wow, Maryjanice Davidson's fans must hate her.

HI DERE, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 12:17 (eighteen years ago)

It's a very conflicted relationship.

Sara R-C, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 13:58 (eighteen years ago)

We need to do this again soon.

John Justen, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 15:49 (eighteen years ago)

THE PRENATAL ETHICS PAPER:

ONE PART CHARDONNAY
ONE PART MEZCAL
ONE PART HEAVY CREAM/BUTTERMILK (TBD)

MIX, SHOOT. REGRET.

John Justen, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 21:26 (eighteen years ago)

Oh, whoops. We decided on buttermilk for the last part.

John Justen, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 21:27 (eighteen years ago)

We = I, in truth.

John Justen, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 21:28 (eighteen years ago)

Don't be shy, John; everyone knows about your little multiple personality problem.

Sara R-C, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 21:30 (eighteen years ago)

I just didn't want to spread the blame of my terrible decisions over the unnamed masses.

John Justen, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 21:49 (eighteen years ago)

one month passes...

OK, so this is more of a solo project (or a John Justen and Caledonia will drink it) because FB isn't here. Whatever.

Overall vote: Neither of us would choose to drink it, but SO MUCH LESS NASTY than the majority of what we've done to ourselves with liquor in the past.

John Justen, Friday, 27 July 2007 01:33 (eighteen years ago)

OK, scratch that, both of us are now having some questionable feelings, stomach-wise. Also, taking the last slug out of the glass was less than pleasant.

John Justen, Friday, 27 July 2007 01:36 (eighteen years ago)

JJ, have you had/had cocktails containing slivovitz? My grandfather (Slovakian) drinks it and my grandmother says it tastes like death. I'm too afraid to try...

Stevie D, Friday, 27 July 2007 01:38 (eighteen years ago)

ABORT ABORT DON'T TRY THIS AT HOME.

xpost: yeah! My ex-roommate brought some back from the czech republic. It's strong. And nasty. However, it comes in a beautiful bottle.

While drinking it (in straight shots, for fucks sake), I thought I might die. It might be OK if you mixed it with something strong tasting and non-alcoholic.

John Justen, Friday, 27 July 2007 01:40 (eighteen years ago)

Yes, my grandpa sips it like on the rocks. From the way it smells, I don't know how he does it.

I don't know about you, but just the thought of dairy + alcohol at all sounds extreeemely unappealing....

Stevie D, Friday, 27 July 2007 01:42 (eighteen years ago)

I agree, but self-imposed duty called, I guess. Also, I am dumb.

FINAL VERDICT: Phlegm-tastic. I feel like my throat is wearing wool socks.

John Justen, Friday, 27 July 2007 01:45 (eighteen years ago)

You should try one involving melted butter

i don't think you actually want to try this, but this is apparently "habanero rum":

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v134/tracerhand/Habanerorum.jpg

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 31 July 2007 14:14 (eighteen years ago)

from the person who took this photo:

"We make habanero rum sometimes. Boil chopped peppers in Bacardi 151 in a pressure cooker, and funnel into bottles.

It comes in 3 grades. The first is basically clear rum, but it's red, the second is bloody red and very bad for your so0ul. The third is the chopped habanero solids, which is basically suicide. This poor guy did a shot of #3 ("Tattoo Remover") and ended up locking himself in the bathroom. We finally got in hours later and found him bare-ass naked on the hotel bathroom floor sweating profusely in a puddle of his own drool and babbling incoherently. GOOD TIMES!"

"the money shot (nsfw) at 23.org/~flea/habanerorum.jpg

+3 points: home skillet is throwing the 'thumbs-up' to let us know he's all good "

Sara R-C, Tuesday, 7 August 2007 04:49 (eighteen years ago)

:(

Sara R-C, Tuesday, 7 August 2007 04:50 (eighteen years ago)

What if it was grape vodka? Do they make grape vodka? So simple. Would an all-grape mixed drink be a party boat? I think that needs a new name. If it's grape crush and grape vodka, it's a Grape Crush Bitch.

Fluffy Bear Hearts Rainbows, Tuesday, 7 August 2007 04:50 (eighteen years ago)

I WOULD HAVE DRINKS WITH ALL THESE ILXORS IN NO PARTICULAR ORDER.

John Justen, Tuesday, 7 August 2007 04:59 (eighteen years ago)

Another Story About My Mother, for Ned. Even when she has had a lot to drink, she can't say the "f" word. When A. and I were still engaged, she was pretty tipsy at a wedding we were all at. Mom started telling a joke that included the f-bomb in the punchline. She couldn't say it. Instead, she turns to me and says... "you finish it, Sara."

(cue A. having absolute hysterics)

Sara R-C, Tuesday, 7 August 2007 04:59 (eighteen years ago)

SARA CAN WE PARTY WITH YOUR MOM OVER LABOR DAY WEEKEND Y/N?

John Justen, Tuesday, 7 August 2007 05:01 (eighteen years ago)

Hmmmm, I could ask her, but when she saw you at the Bierstube that one time, she was pretty traumatized by the fact that you had earrings, so I don't know.

That being said, I kind of wish they were still in the house on Louis so that we could go drink in the empty lot next to it.

The little ditty John likes to sing when going about his 'business':

For her lust
She'll burn in hell
Her soul done medium well
All through mass manual stimulation
Salvation

Body of christ
She needs
The body of christ

She'd like to know god
Ooh love god
Feel her god
Inside of here - deep inside of her

Jesus christ looks like me

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 7 August 2007 05:14 (eighteen years ago)

Okay, I just got off the phone with my brother (he's running the HSTNGS House of Wines these days). There is, indeed, at least one brand of vodka - Three Olives - that offers grape vodka. He reeled off several other flavors as well, including cherry, watermelon, and pomegranate.

Make of that what you will.

John Justen, Thursday, 30 August 2007 19:01 (eighteen years ago)

Tracer, that sounds fantastic.

I had a St. Germain & Tonic several weeks ago and it was quite refreshing! It is a light and floral without being overly sweet -- and would probably combine very nicely with Hendrick's or a brisk white wine of some kind...?

elmo argonaut, Thursday, 30 August 2007 19:17 (eighteen years ago)

hahaha the lovely emma b has just returned with a bottle of MYRTILLE

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 30 August 2007 19:58 (eighteen years ago)

I think I should mention a drink that has become a bit of a legend in my circle of friends

PVP (PLUMS VERSUS PEOPLE)

ingredients:

26oz Plum Brandy
2L 7up or equivalent

Directions:

Put one or two shots of plum brandy in a tall glass. Add 7up. Drink. Repeat. If you survive the whole bottle, PEOPLE get one point. If you do not, PLUMS get one point.

So far I think the score is like 4-0 plums.

This is a delicious drink that will ruin your night. It was named after my friend first heard of plum brandy, drank it with 7up, and appeared fine to everyone until he started staring at some out of towners, pointing and mumbling "versus people wanna bring it" over and over, more and more loudly, until yelling it at the top of his lungs, vomitting and collapsing.

Will M., Thursday, 30 August 2007 20:02 (eighteen years ago)

The Nipsy Russel is a staple. We will also be perfecting Blood Diamonds and the Party Boat.

I invented two drinks that are quite good. The theme: soon-to-be-ex-harasser of friends getting served restraining order.

The drinks:

Bitch Got Served

1 tsp agave syrup
6 dashes lemon biters
1 jigger grapefruit juice
2 jiggers tequila

Rim rocks glass with salt. Add 1 tsp agave syrup (substitute simple syrup or 1 tsp sugar). Add 6 dashes lemon bitters. Wet with 1 jigger grape fruit juice. Muddle with back of spoon. Pour tequila. Add ice. Stir. Garnish with a twist of lime.

(Basically a cross between a tequila old fashioned and a salty dog.)

Sangre de la Puta

2 jiggers red wine
1 jigger tequila
1 jigger triple sec
2 jiggers sour
1 jigger carbonated water
dash of lime

pour all ingredients into shaker with ice. Shake well. Pour up or on the rocks in a margarita glass (or cocktail glass). Garnish with a wedge of lime.

Note: use a relatively sweet red wine, but not desert wine.

Um, wait. What?

Airwrecka Bliptrap Blapmantis (ENBB), Monday, 19 August 2013 15:40 (twelve years ago)

We were transitioning from a harbor cruise celebrating the marriage of Fluffy Bear/Austerity Ponies to his wonderful wife to a bar and I was ditching my jacket in the car. Another guest was going to go pump in her car and cracked a joke about making everyone White Russians. I wasn't paying attention to her so all I heard was "White Russians" and I assumed she said something about buying White Russians at the bar, so I said "okay sure!" and she went "OMG I WAS KIDDING" and it wasn't until the elevator door closed that I realized what she must have said.

OH MY GOD HE'S OOGLY (DJP), Monday, 19 August 2013 15:44 (twelve years ago)

we later went out to this woman's house in Waltham and drank a shit-ton of beer; still no White Russians tho </robbed>
