Heh. I dunno if it's like this everywhere, but in Chicago this strip is in the back of The Onion, right next to "Cathy" en espanol.

jaymc, Friday, 2 March 2007 18:19 (eighteen years ago)

It's sort of like Get Your War On, isn't it? Except I like that the humor seems to beyond "look, corporate-handbook illustrations are SWEARING."

If you hold your mouse over each comic on the actual website an authorial addition appears in the text-box, which of course makes it even greater!

unfished business, Saturday, 3 March 2007 01:28 (eighteen years ago)

Okay, this is like Get Your War On only funny!

HI DERE, Saturday, 3 March 2007 01:37 (eighteen years ago)

How have we all missed this since 2003?!

unfished business, Saturday, 3 March 2007 01:40 (eighteen years ago)

nabisco, can you post a link AND a pic, so I don't have to keep copying and pasting?

kenan, Saturday, 3 March 2007 01:41 (eighteen years ago)

also, thanks, this is awesome, and even though it's in the reader, i only read that for movie times.

iiiijjjj, Saturday, 3 March 2007 03:00 (eighteen years ago)

I hate to be a buzzkill, but there is nothing really funny about any of these.

Whiney G. Weingarten, Saturday, 3 March 2007 04:35 (eighteen years ago)

It's like that shitty Dinosaurs comic only exactly like that shitty Dinosaurs comic.

Whiney G. Weingarten, Saturday, 3 March 2007 04:36 (eighteen years ago)

Weird!! I saw this strip in The Onion, but didn't catch it's name. As I read the title of this thread, I thought, I wonder what the name of that comic from The Onion is...? And then I clicked on this thread and Lo! it was revealed.

Jesse, Saturday, 3 March 2007 08:12 (eighteen years ago)

Sorry, Whiney, but you need to really convince me as to why these strips aren't funny. And I'm not easily amused.

Capitaine Jay Vee, Saturday, 3 March 2007 09:48 (eighteen years ago)

This strip is pretty much TURN OF THE CENTURY IMAGES JUXTAPOSED WITH MODERN CONCEPTS = FUNNY.

It depends on the reader thinking that concept is inherently funny, so no matter what text you fill the balloons with, it gets a laugh. Take the Atkins/Marcarena strip. The only reason that's "funny" (it's not, btw) is because LOL STATIC IMAGES ADOPTING FADS. Whereas if you took the shittiest strip in say, Foxtrot, and turned it into a cartoon, or a sitcom, or a piece of sketch comedy, the joke could still translate. This strip lives and dies on how funny you think it is to do fake "old-timey" talk.

Whiney G. Weingarten, Saturday, 3 March 2007 16:54 (eighteen years ago)

Um, no. The reason the Macarena strip is funny is because the son is complaining about the mom's behavior to the dad, who is also doing the same thing. The humor is enhanced by the fact that the od-timey pic of the woman does actually look like the Macarena but that's not the foundation of the joke.

In a similar way,the sandwich board strip is funny because the guys are all communicating like they were Shirt Tails rejects, not solely because of the juxtaposition of dialogue and the old-timey clip art.

HI DERE, Saturday, 3 March 2007 18:11 (eighteen years ago)

Whiney G. Weingarten you sure are a stupid moron

iiiijjjj, Saturday, 3 March 2007 18:15 (eighteen years ago)

http://www.wondermark.com/comics/241.gif
http://www.wondermark.com/comics/241.gif

This one is completely built on the text and not at all related to difference between the captions and the pictures.

HI DERE, Saturday, 3 March 2007 18:15 (eighteen years ago)

that is pretty comprehensive ownage! i'm impressed.

http://www.wondermark.com/comics/016.gif

unfished business, Saturday, 3 March 2007 18:56 (eighteen years ago)

Holding your mouse over these to get the alternate text is U&K.

Rock Hardy, Saturday, 3 March 2007 18:59 (eighteen years ago)

I must ask again -- who is Whiney G. Weingarten, and does this person not die?

kenan, Saturday, 3 March 2007 19:07 (eighteen years ago)

Among other things, he's the main dude behind Paper Thin Walls, which means I cut him a little slack, since we might not be here otherwise.

jaymc, Saturday, 3 March 2007 19:11 (eighteen years ago)

ok, fine.

This strip lives and dies on how funny you think it is to do fake "old-timey" talk.

OMG THAT'S SO STUPID rips eyes out runs down hall

kenan, Saturday, 3 March 2007 19:21 (eighteen years ago)

You guys are all aware of Married To The Sea, right? It makes much better use of of old-timey clip art, imho.

http://www.marriedtothesea.com/022506/doublefish.jpg

31g, Saturday, 3 March 2007 19:30 (eighteen years ago)

he's the main dude behind Paper Thin Walls

production or direction? I will give love to the money man, for making it happen. Whoever coded this thing is... I'll stop myself from slinging hate speech, and say that this person got a large, even astonishing, number of things wrong. Things that should have been easy.

kenan, Saturday, 3 March 2007 19:32 (eighteen years ago)

Whiney G. Weingarten you sure are a stupid moron

One of the symptoms of autism is that those afflicted don't "get" jokes that normal people do. So, yes, you may have to cut Mr. Whiney a bit of slack.

libcrypt, Saturday, 3 March 2007 19:39 (eighteen years ago)

that poor bastard.

He's in charge of what, again? The hosting of this site?

oh no.

http://www.wondermark.com/d/262.html

fies, Saturday, 3 March 2007 22:03 (eighteen years ago)

I think we should stab Whiney in the eyes repeatedly, as he does not share our opinions.
This is appropriate.

forksclovetofu, Saturday, 3 March 2007 22:22 (eighteen years ago)

kenan really doesn't get bored of sitting around being a fanny

RJG, Saturday, 3 March 2007 22:38 (eighteen years ago)

DIFFERENCE IS BAD

max, Saturday, 3 March 2007 22:39 (eighteen years ago)

I can't think of anything less worthwhile than actually arguing over whether a comic strip is funny or not, but I do kind of want to note that I don't think the humor comes solely from the juxtaposition of old images + modern talk: these amuse me mostly because the modern talk itself is pretty funny! A lot of these I'd laugh at probably no matter how they were illustrated (like the "you're not an artist" / "but I have a Mac!" one).

HI DERE, Saturday, 10 March 2007 03:25 (eighteen years ago)

To be totally honest, it's probably not the comic. I just don't find a lot of popular alt.humor to be very funny.

I liked doublefish, though.
