ok i saw a scary thing yesterday: whole office = out at c's birthday lunch at wok wok (yay). end of meal n., wh = office youngest, puts on her lippy exactly korrektly and supermodelishly W/O REF TO A MIRROR! All other gurlz on table (four of em) GASP IN HORRIFIED AWE!! All boyz on table (= me) explain how even uberkewl sistah, who punXoR feminist-wise professes not to use or own mirrors, actually slyly deploys reflectivity of eg spoons or forks, other ppl's glasses!!

I love my lipstick. And my eyeshadow and the rest.

This does not mean I am an advocate of the dogs dinner Kat Slater look.

Putting on make up (and taking it off) are parts of the day where I focus just on me. It's a cross between play and meditation.

I also like the fancy dress aspect i.e. today I want to feel powerful = bright red, black liquid liner; I might get away with it if I look more innocent = pink gloss and baby blue eyes; arty vamp time = deep, deep plum.

When I run a multimational lipstick company for not sympathising with my career woes Emma shall get no freebies. I rarely wear lipstick anyway. In fact it has been yonks since I wore makeup. I was going to make more of an effort for CLUB SUSSED but then went to the pub. I am not sure if lipstick suits me. My mother did but then again she thought she was fat when she weighed about 4 stone and also thinks pink cowboy boots with fake wooden bits on them are very classy and k- kewl. They're not.

Today I have on: normal No 7 foundation, Body Shop squeezy tube navy eyeshadow cream stuff which last weekend went ALL OVER the mirror and wall when the squeezy mechanism got stuck, blue eyeliner, Dior mascara, No 7 pink cream blusher and the aforementioned lip gloss. Katie you just need some Kiehl's lip balm, costs a whole fiver but unlike ChapStik, will not fall down the sofa because when you pay lots for this stuff, you tend to look after it. Kiehl's for your skin is great and the salesgirls are really nice as they stuff enough free samples of other Kiehl's products (whoa, leg shaving cream? Do I need this?) into your bag to keep you going for weeks. All you have to do is say, 'ooh, my skin gets a little bit dry in the winter - have you got anything I can try?' to the Kiehl's staff at Liberty's and PRESTO.

I don't use make-up from chemists/Boots/Top Shop except for Maybelline mascara, but Body Shop tinted glow enhancer and 001 concealer stick are in my Marimekko make-up bag. Along with Shisheido and Shu Uemura translucent powder, and lipsticks from Shisheido, Givenchy (these have little mirrors built in the tube designed by McQueen), Dior, MAC, Iman, Clinique and Borghese. But my favourite thing is the brow definer/dark eyeshadow thing from Shisheido that I got at a Visionaire party in NYC for fashion week last year. Hooray for GOODIE BAGS.

I don't fear Boots, normally I shun it as is *way* overpriced for things like hair dye (L'Oreal Brasilia is getting on for EIGHT QUID there and my local chemist has it for a fiver or so). When choice is Boots or Harvey Nichols/Liberty for the other stuff I want to go to the latter so I can get at a better class of perfume (no Corso Como 10 10, no Comme des Garçons, no Helmut Lang unless you go to The Posh Stores, not to mention no weird, experimental Guerlain either). I just can't be arsed to walk all the way up Oxford St to department stores especially when Superdrug is right opposite. I am a very lazy princess. However you are right about Boots new Pure Beauty stores, I was quite excited by ours at first but was soon disillusioned by the fact that they refuse to take part in Boots special offers as if they are too good grrr. I heart Kiehl's. I'm kind of schizo when it comes to make up. I like Benefit and Stila but then I also am a maybelline girl. My makeup needs are really simple: black liquid liner, black mascara, loose powder and red lipstick. That's it, all I ever wear. Anything else I buy ends up collecting dust. I'm actually with Samantha on the 'what's needed' tip as regards make- up. However I'm always after a better moisturiser, figuring if you crack that problem you need less of the other stuff. I won't spend more than about £20 for a tub of stuff and I don't like it with SPF because that plays havoc with my complexion.

I learnt how to use liquid eyeliner (with brush and small tub of the stuff) when in training as a young THESBIAN and find that, on the rare occasions when I am called upon to line mine eyen, I miss it. I have even asked for it by name in places like Ricky's on Broadway and they look at me like I'm nutso; "yeah well we got the liquid PENZor" NO it's not on.

i haven't found anything offensive here... but sometimes product knowledge builds up & up, and i/one needs to share to prevent a complete overdose. makeup is a bit addictive. i try to stick to just blush and balm, but applied with shu uemura brushes, which somehow tricks me into thinking i am using more (or at least exposing myself to several brands per day?) does anyone understand this sort of daily cosmetic prayer?

I personally knew several Body Shop workers (of course now working for a Government Department as well, a scrote, I am above such shop gurl experiences) and when they started they did not even know their fellow shop floor attendants and got given jobs on basis of.. applying, so well done Suzy for getting in at the top.

I'm not likely to be on the football threads; the only way I used to get through Match Of The Day in a flat shared with LADS was to pick up on Latently Homosexual Commentary Moments. Pointing these out ("And it's Beckham! Taking it tastily up the inside!") was worth it for finding out whether or not my flatmates were homophobes (they weren't; soon they were spotting innuendo all over that broadcast). That's the way I watch my football, if ever (but if I were held at gunpoint re: teams it's Liverpool and Celtic due to being moved by the loyalty of a few friends who support both).

umm, anyway, *searches for lipstick related comments*.....*wind blows through trees*....*time passes*.....*goats die*....oh, yes, i use to wear eyeliner quite a bit as a teenager, but unfortunately i didn't like things near my eyes so that was problematic. and then people thought i was wearing it when i wasn't because of how my eyes are, so i thought, hey, i don't need it!

Um, I'm rather confused as to how what Suzy has said in this thread could be deemed offensive. Mildly irritating and/or amusing cos of the way it's bordered on the self-parodic I can see, but I'm having trouble grokking what was offensive about it per se.

Sarah, I wind up having to go to Paris twice a year or so for work so I guess the office pays my fare. But still, you can get there for £50 or so, or do the Eurostar daytrip if so inclined. At any rate, the price difference in many items justifies the expense. Things which are cheap in Paris include karate pajamas, Camper shoes, various cheongsam dresses, big cans of chocolat chaud, and MAKEUP and PERFUME, hooray. You would go MAD in Paris Chinatown (really Vietnam/Thai/Laos/ Chinatown) as compared to London's it's MASSIVE.
