the main problem with the bbcode thing is that, if someone uses an "illegal link" or "illegal image," it doesn't then give you the url to choose to follow on your own, it just says "removed illegal whatever," which isn't very cool at all--especially without an explanation down there as to what constitutes illegal linkage (yes, i am aware this was explained on some other thread but the idea that people should be expected to have read that thread and remember every nuance is ridiculous).

why is it in the middle of the thread though? it is a weird place to put it, especially since there is no control over how many posts you want the board to skip for you. when you want to read the skipped messages, it reloads the entire thread and starts you back at the beginning, not at the place you were at, so shouldn't the skipped messages be at the START of the thread?

also, i guess i understand the theory behind leaving the first 20 or so messages readable before the skip--but it takes up room if you HAVE been following a thread, room that COULD be used by new messages that are being posted in the here and now that might end up in the skipped section in a quick moving/long thread.

OTM. I can't work out why this function was changed. I'm staying out of 'Nazi Admins vs Ungrateful Wretches' but can someone who was involved in the coding explain how the skipped messages link being in the middle is better? Or at least say why it was implemented in this way?

I'm pretty sure that Keith or Stet said at some point that one of the reasons why the "skipped messages" thing is in the middle of the thread is that they don't *want* people clicking on it, because loading long threads = strain on the server. Or rather they only want people clicking on it that are actually invested in the thread, not just random people who see it up on the top.

I agree it's really annoying, though.

why is it in the middle of the thread though? it is a weird place to put it

It is maybe odd... The reason I put it there was to avoid people just clicking it for clicking its sake, as it reduces load on the server and lets it cope with more users at once. I know myself from using old ILX, that I would often just load the whole thread despite rarely reading it all. If I do it, with the number of hits this place gets, regardless of whether or not you guys do the right thing or not, it would have an effect (because 98%+ of the traffic is not you guys).

However, it might not have a huge effect. Still, it's one of probably twenty suggestions that would have this sort of effect, and I am keen that we don't move back to square one with this thing. I'm not majorly averse to putting it at the top, but I do have to judge which of the changes, that would impact the performance/site-staying-up stuff make sense to do, and no doubt that won't make sense to everyone.

What I will definitely do is make it far clearer (have already done), and also make it jump back immediately to that point when you click it (not done this yet)... Would this do? Or are people super-keen on it going at the top, despite the con, described above?

One thing I should make clear is that I'm not in the habit of doing a bunch of work to make people like Jon stop whining about it! I doubt that's possible. I suspect he really ought to write his own board, as it's the only thing likely to live up to his standards, rather than hoping that others do it for him.

actually, it's not written clearly - it doesn't mention that certain characters are illegal in the "my link title" portion of the tag, which is what causes the "removed illegal link" message. try posting the following and you're guaranteed to get an illegal link (remove the space between "li" and "nk", of course):

because when the old code was fucked and ILX was down every other hour, some people stepped up to the mark and said: "right, we'll write new stuff". and others said: "HEY LOOK THIS CODE IS BROKEN WOW LOOK IT'S FUCKED I CAN DO FUNNEH THINGS WITH CSS WAYHEYHEY LOOK AT ME EVERYBODY LOOK LOOK LOOK AT ME LOOK AT ME EVERYONE!." and the majority - including myself - did absolutely fuck all, so i guess we take what we get and make occasional constructive criticism.

Also, in case it isn't explicit from the way I stride about in my big boots, Pashmina is dictator-for-life, not me. All I do is keep the server going, and a bit of code-fuxing. Keith writes 99.9% of the code, and I pester him for features. Back in the "constructive criticism" vein (not that anyone with any sense is probably still reading this thread), on the topic of the "Skipping messages" thing - my vote is top of thread, top of thread, top of thread. If you've been following a thread daily, you won't click on it and the DB takes no hits. If you've just pulled it out of the ~~archived categorized questions~~ googlesearch, you probably are going to click the damn thing anyway if the thread turns out to look like the one you were looking for, so why not make it easy to do that? And if you load up eight Rammstein threads and realize quickly that only one is the one you're after, the DB doesn't get the full hit on the other seven. Have it pop up again in the middle, of course, so you're aware when the break is.

Might also be handy to have a button at the top that doesn't load the skipped posts, but jumps you straight down to the skip point. Gets you to the most recent part of the discussion fast, without you having to be logged in - and not being logged in is kind of the default ILX condition now.

Does that convince?

Every problem that this new ILX has and the old ILX had is the result of the underlying code being completely preposterous. There's no reason for a site like this to be so unbelievably insecure that HTML had to be disallowed in forum posts, and such a server hog that some of the content has to be made invisible. What this place needs is for someone with a skilled hand at CMS-based site design and some CSS chops to cobble together an ultra-simple forum based on whatever it is people actually like about this one. The design could be handled in a graphics-free manner, it could be customized to be just as stripped-down and utilitarian as it is now, and it could be full-featured, fast and graceful. In other words, it could resemble web design circa 2007, not something somebody hard-coded in 1996 from scratch. Maybe it could even have a couple themes -- one that looks just like this for people who have asshole bosses who would reprimand them if they caught them on a more traditional-looking forum, and another one that's, say, grey over grey, for people who are less keen on being blasted in the retinas by a wash of pure white by a battery of phosphor cannons while they attempt to read text.

Factor, you're describing this new code. I doubt you're aware of the size of the archives, the scale of the traffic, or the limited amount of server, but apart from that what you describe happening IS what happened, and this is a 1.0 result.

Its at least web 1.1 compliant... I mean shit.. there's JAVASCRIPT *and* *CSS*. Won't work in netscape 4!

This is all basic incentives: the banks had a fucked-up bonus system that rewarded people for behaving like this. And MPs have a massive incentive system for keeping house prices going up, as it gets them votes (witness the massacre right now). There was nobody else to prevent it apart from the people in the market, and that's not gonna happen unless they're too busy panic-buying petrol or something.
