Five Guys Famous Burgers and Fries

no thread yet? somehow there are now 150 locations and "another thousand are being phased in." if they have to become the in-n-out of the east, is there any hope their partisans might be less annoying?

W i l l, Monday, 19 March 2007 05:08 (eighteen years ago)

i'll take them over any fast food place, but i'll take your average non-fast food burger over them. the reason you feel compelled to keep going back is the monstrous cup of hfcs.

gabbneb, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 14:44 (eighteen years ago)

in-n-out is a lot better at controlling each franchise and maintaining quality from one location to the next, as far as I've been able to tell. most of the recent five guys installations I've been to can't hold a candle to the "original" handful of locations, in terms of food or even cleanliness and atmosphere.

TOMBOT, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 15:10 (eighteen years ago)

i got some gift certs to these five fellows from my boss for my birthday. i have yet to use them, because i think the first five guys burger i ate is still somewhere inside of me

Mr. Que, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 15:16 (eighteen years ago)

i want these burgers. :(

Ms Misery, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 15:16 (eighteen years ago)

they are yummy at all the branches that i have been to. but seriously, watch out for the fries.

my wife and i love the fries, and we can barely finish a small.

Mr. Que, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 15:20 (eighteen years ago)

yeah after i eat the fries i hate potatoes for weeks, and i'm irish.

Mr. Que, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 15:20 (eighteen years ago)

i think three people in my office helped me finish them

does ally have a sister that got a job at five guys?

James Redd and the Blecchs, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 15:25 (eighteen years ago)

We don't have this or In n' Out in the midwest. :(

Jordan, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 15:25 (eighteen years ago)

We don't have it either in NYC, but looks like it's coming soon, in my old 'hood.

James Redd and the Blecchs, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 15:28 (eighteen years ago)

The best part about this place is the inadvertent jokes one makes involving the name. Close second is the burgers. Yes, they really, really need a portion of fries smaller than the small.

Vinnie, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 15:59 (eighteen years ago)

Britain needs quality fast food chains. I miss the In-n-Out burger, though you reckon quality control is fairly simple with such a small menu to master. Is the Five Guys joint the same as far as menu options?

Gukbe, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 16:03 (eighteen years ago)

i would eat all this burgers n fries.
the "coming soon" brooklyn location isn't too far, and the weather is getting nicer.

ian, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 16:13 (eighteen years ago)

The menu has like four things on it, so that part isn't the problem - I've found the food quality and especially service vary from location to location.

Vinnie, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 17:07 (eighteen years ago)

that's too bad. i've only been to a non-original location once and it was fine, but i guess it's inevitable with franchising

W i l l, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 21:06 (eighteen years ago)

I like

Comprehensive Nuclear Suggest-Ban Treaty (Hurting 2), Monday, 6 April 2009 07:02 (sixteen years ago)

Fries so gooooooooooood, especially if you bring some seasoned salt to put on them. I reward myself for good deeds by going there and eating an entire large order and a coke.

f. hazel, Monday, 6 April 2009 07:34 (sixteen years ago)

wasnt that impressed first time i went there, but am basically addicted now

through hellfire and aspergers (cankles), Monday, 6 April 2009 08:32 (sixteen years ago)

I went this afternoon and got, like, an entire brown bag filled to the brim with french fries. It was like a picture from a kid's book.

f. hazel, Tuesday, 7 April 2009 04:50 (sixteen years ago)

haha i've had a craving for 5 Guys so much lately, and now i'm up late and hungry, so this thread being bumped right now is like ian sharing his yearning with me.

Shawty Lo Collier (some dude), Tuesday, 7 April 2009 04:53 (sixteen years ago)

o fuk I want five guys right now.

Comprehensive Nuclear Suggest-Ban Treaty (Hurting 2), Tuesday, 7 April 2009 04:59 (sixteen years ago)

wow, theres one of these like two miles away and ive never even heard of them. burgers and fries isnt really my thing tho.

iro with the brown bag (Hunt3r), Tuesday, 7 April 2009 05:06 (sixteen years ago)

I do not really like their fries very much, but I will say that getting really drunk and going to Five Guys to plow through a cheeseburger and a whole mess of peanuts is one of life's special joys.

C-L, Tuesday, 7 April 2009 05:13 (sixteen years ago)

ian, Tuesday, 7 April 2009 05:28 (sixteen years ago)

"Coming Soon" to a Coral Gables location near me. First one in Miami, I think.

Does FGFB&F have non-meat burgers (e.g., soy; garden; veggie) and, if so, are they good?

Daniel, Esq., Tuesday, 7 April 2009 05:45 (sixteen years ago)

Haha, just checked. Not the first one in Miami. But the first one in the Gables.

Daniel, Esq., Tuesday, 7 April 2009 05:47 (sixteen years ago)

only had em that one time in Georgetown, but then I try to confine my red meat/fries consumption at my advanced age, as you all should when you reach yr dotage.

Dr Morbius, Tuesday, 7 April 2009 11:40 (sixteen years ago)

I've never been to any FG that had non-meat burgers, though they do have a "grilled cheese", which is just the burger minus the meat. :( I'm not holding my breath on them adding non-meat burgers; their menu is pretty simple and hasn't changed since I first starting going there.

Vinnie, Tuesday, 7 April 2009 13:40 (sixteen years ago)

there's one of these in the town where i work--i am a little scared of it tbh

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 7 April 2009 13:43 (sixteen years ago)

they have veggie burgers, dont listen to that fucken cumlord

through hellfire and aspergers (cankles), Tuesday, 7 April 2009 14:44 (sixteen years ago)

Either the FG in your area are way cooler than the ones in mine, or you're just talking about the veggie/grilled cheese sandwich they have, which is what I described, a burger without the meat. To me, the patty makes it a burger, and they don't have non-meat patties, so no veggie burgers. They even have something in their FAQ about what they server is not really a veggie burger.

Vinnie, Tuesday, 7 April 2009 15:17 (sixteen years ago)

the whole thing sounds like a shitty east-coast version of in n out except inserted into strip malls instead of in standalone buildings.

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 7 April 2009 15:20 (sixteen years ago)

What makes you say it's shitty?

WmC, Tuesday, 7 April 2009 15:22 (sixteen years ago)

Mr. Que, Tuesday, 7 April 2009 15:28 (sixteen years ago)

the cool thing abt in and out is its so cheap - its not particularly better than the other nu fast food places - shake shack pwns all imo

c?rvel (ice cr?m), Tuesday, 7 April 2009 15:31 (sixteen years ago)

i'm thinking it's shitty because in n out is really tightly associated with the abstract concept of "california" in my mind. it has so much style and so many quirks and it just kind of embodies something to me.

meanwhile, five guys is in a faceless strip mall and has a generic block-lettered sign. maybe i would like it but they're not trying very hard to sell it to me.

Yeah, sometimes when I've never tried a place's food, I just think about where they build their locations and can usually make pretty accurate assumptions about how their stuff tastes. Makes sense.

Shawty Lo Collier (some dude), Tuesday, 7 April 2009 15:48 (sixteen years ago)

to be fair, five guys burgers taste like a strip mall

i knew what the burger zeitgeist meant--dc has this new chain called Z Burger that you can tell from across the street is trying to ape 5 guys. here's a sample yelp

Washington, DC
3 star rating
4/3/2009

All comments that Z-burger is identical to Five Guys is completely accurate - it's just a cleaner version (sans peanuts on the floor and greasy paper bags). I don't know the story of how Z-burger came about, but I'm assuming that its origins came from some extremely unoriginal minds.

They took the Five Guys burger concept and combined it with a nostalgic-California-burger/shake atmosphere - and placed it in a few neighborhoods where there's currently no Five Guys. You get the feeling that the daughter of a 1980s sitcom would work there - even she would say "this is just like Five Guys." The toppings are all the same - except for the crazy "Z-sauce"!!! until you realize it probably came out of a tub of Ken's thousand island salad dressing (another fresh idea from the owners).

Sure, the burger was tasty. I expected something different with all of the hype. If something is good, and already exists, don't mess with it. I'm sticking with Five Guys, just like I am with the original Pink Panther movies.

ian, Wednesday, 8 April 2009 17:40 (sixteen years ago)

Oh, wait, Max, if your main contention is that New York as a whole is not as great of a taco place as the southwestern U.S., I don't know that you really need to have spend much time in the southwest to agree to that -- I would rank that among bold claims like "NYC has some good Italian restaurants" and "you can get good bratwurst in Wisconsin." (Which is maybe a different argument from some people saying "yeah but you can get first-rate tacos here, even if it's not quite raining them.")

Although to be fair there is a place near my house with the pretty straightforward offer of "Southern California Mexican Cuisine" and I am constantly watching people stop and read it and genuinely not understand what that means, so apparently there are actual people who live in American who are unaware that there are a lot of Mexicans and Mexican food/culture happening, amazingly enough, near the border with Mexico, and in parts of the country that actually used to be Mexico. I know, you'd never guess.

I forget what I was going to say about Five Guys, but there's one of those nearby, too, and I was pretty into it for a while. (It's hard to be "into" a burger place for more than a short while.) I like their hot sauce a lot. (xpost - I also like mayo on burgers fine; is that Midwestern of me? I associate it with backyard cookout burgers, like lettuce tomato mayo mustard pickles onion.)

nabisco, Wednesday, 8 April 2009 17:40 (sixteen years ago)

Oh, I also like that you can get the single-patty burger and it's a nice thin patty, for those times when you want a thinner piece of meat and maybe more stuff on it -- I appreciate that option cause I definitely do not always want a big honking thick/juicy patty like you're often stuck with at restaurants.

nabisco, Wednesday, 8 April 2009 17:42 (sixteen years ago)

this is a weird comment for like four reasons

My husband (a PhD) would get quite a chuckle seeing all of you misinformed Yankees pick the pimento burger. His internet privleges are soon to be restored, so I will let him "weigh" in himself. His ample girth notwithstanding.

i've buttered steak before so buttering hamburger would not be a leap of faith. I draw the line at nuts.

bela fregosi (brownie), Wednesday, 8 April 2009 17:59 (sixteen years ago)

1) why does one need to be a phD, to judge a hamburger
2) why would he laugh at people deciding they like the taste of this burger, regardless?
3) why is he not given internet privs? pron?
4) "weigh"
5) his fatness might be the first thing that makes him sound qualified for this job

rip dom passantino 3/5/09 never forget (max), Wednesday, 8 April 2009 18:05 (sixteen years ago)

The Pimento Burger: Pimento cheese is big across the South, usually as a spread eaten on celery stalks or as a filling between two pieces of white bread. But in Columbia, South Carolina, they use it as both cheese and condiment on the burgers. Pimento cheese, for all you Yankees here in New York City, is a mixture of grated cheddar, chopped pimento, mayo, hot sauce, and black pepper. (Horseradish, mustard, and Worcestershire sauce are three common options.)

Mr. Que, Wednesday, 8 April 2009 18:05 (sixteen years ago)

the pimiento burger is allegedly a southern thing, max

I've seen the mayo / tomato / oinion combo called a "california" burger, usually in NYC diners that cater to tourists. It's also how we did them at home (parents are midwest/southwesterners). I'll put mayo on a burger, but I only trust myself to do this properly. ketchup seen as "low class" by same parents.

Ha, I've never thought of this as something at diners that cater to tourists -- I think of it being at your standard corner "Greek" diners (found in many non-NYC cities as well), and I always interpreted it almost like someone saying "check it out, we'll put stuff like a tomato on your $2.75 burger! or even lettuce! pretty high-class fancy, right? actual produce that grew in the ground, it's like we're in California or something!"

deluxe is mostly fries (though sometimes lettuce/tomato/onions, but also sometimes that's "special")

nabisco, Wednesday, 8 April 2009 19:21 (sixteen years ago)

note: I agree 100% about "California" often being "we put avacado on it" -- I basically think of the lettuce/tomato thing as being places so unfancy that fresh lettuce/tomato are almost the exotic equivalent of adding avocado

I always order fries but no l&t, which elicits the same response.

Also, Nabisco, are these "special" burgers also the ones that cost $2.75 at your average greek diners? cuz all the diners hereabouts/thereabouts afaik start burger prices around $4.99 or higher for a basic burger no cheeze/no veg/no fries.

I can't believe Alex would rage about that -- I pretty much take it as given that when ordering fries, there's like a 65% chance they're going to show up limp, soggy, or cold. That's just the way fry-ordering goes.

Five Guys fries stand up to (short) deliveries pretty well, though it sucks that they won't deliver drinks, because there aren't exactly a lot of places in the world where I can get fountain Mr. Pibb.

xpost - haha I dunno, Ian, I just made up the price, it's probably closer to four. For the record I also know places that are the opposite, where "special" is fries but not lettuce/tomato! $3.25 sounds right for just the burger and nothing else.

I ate at a Five Guys in NYC a couple months ago. I don't eat meat, but I liked that you could get a grilled cheese with as many toppings as you want (grilled onions, pickles, mushrooms, etc.) for like two or three bucks.

hahah you're not far offtm. i would go again and get something different. i got a regular cheeseburger and asked for ketchup, mayo, grilled onions, and grilled mushrooms. but they forget my grilled vegetables and seriously they just use completely unreasonable amounts of cheese and mayo, so the whole thing was gooey and had zero definition.

So I order burger and fries "for here" and it comes in a bag, no tray. The bounty of fries is on top of the burger, so there's no way to get at the burger other than burrowing a hole with my hand through the fries. I've never spent more than $7 there?? The burgers are atrociously big. I just ordered a regular burger w/ the toppings I wanted and was surprised to get a double-decker, which I guess was just usual.

I was trying to look up their nutritional info online and came across a pdf from 2008. the only item listed as containing trans fats was the veggie sandwich. I found a more recent copy and the veggie sandwich no longer claimed trans fats, but I gotta wonder if this was a change of ingredients or a change of labelling requirements or something.

Youth Ya Goon (Whiney G. Weingarten), Monday, 7 November 2011 13:33 (thirteen years ago)

The 5 Guys Vegetable Sandwich comes on a really, really soft sesame bun, which I’m guessing was either moist from grease grill splatter, or they steam them. Between the bun, when ordered “All the way”, they put mayo, mustard, onion, mushrooms, pickles, lettuce, and tomato. The vegetables that make up the sandwich if you do not order it “All the way” would appear to be: jalapeno peppers.

curmudgeon, Monday, 7 November 2011 15:34 (thirteen years ago)

I've never understood why vegetarians order anything from chain burger places anyway (esp McD/BK). Not only is all the food cooked on the same grill, you're supporting the wasteful bullshit by buying anything from them. I'm not even vege and I wont eat from places like that. These days all I'll have is Lord of the Fries because they're vegan and kosher friendly.

i'm not stanning for mcdonalds as great food, but i will cop to stopping for a buck fifty hamburger during road trips featuring off-ramp golden arches

Whiney otm about all the store names sounding like burger sex btw, wtf. "in n out" is a gross name for a food store.

idk if the first thing you think about when you hear of a drive thru place called "in n out" is sex and not driving thru a fast food restaurant, you may wanna see a therapist

SMASHBURGER on the other hand

J0rdan S., Friday, 6 July 2012 00:52 (thirteen years ago)

cutting out the 'b' and 'r' from 'burger' and having an 'in n out urge' bumper sticker was apparently the thing to do before in-n-out's xian management got mad and dropped the 'burger' from their bumper stickers.

Five Guys doesn't have a fry option for less than $2.50-3, right?
I'm unwilling to pay $6 for a burger with American cheese anyway, tbh. Cheddar or GTFO.

In-n-out is overrated but it's probably the most edible fast-food burger option.

e, i went through a really bad DD hash browns phase last year, but it ended abruptly i realized the bag they served in wasn't supposed to be translucent.

Oh, I would never get a sandwich there - gross. TBH the only thing I ever get is the egg white veggie flat bread and coffee both of which are solid imo. I can't speak for the rest.

i'm off to patty & bun instead tho

my eventual wife (stevie), Friday, 5 July 2013 11:38 (twelve years ago)

shake shack seems fairly cheap in comparison to competitors, £5 for single shackburger, have not laid eyes on one for size comparison though. and yeah burgers are so last year, i'm still thrilled to be alive at this exciting time.

ledge, Friday, 5 July 2013 11:45 (twelve years ago)

It's amazing to me that it's taken so long for this kind of thing to happen; it's a friggin' goldmine. I walked by last night when I was in town - there was a 10-block-long queue (which the guy told me was about a 90 minute/2 hour wait).

That new Shake Shack is ACROSS the street from Meat Market (and about a 10 minute walk from Honest Burger, Lucky Chip, Burger & Lobster, etc. etc.) - obviously the burger bubble is going to burst one of these days.

I think California Pizza Kitchen would be enormous in the UK - besides the better-than-any-of-the-other-popular-chains food, there's a big market for CA-branded stuff (e.g. the UCLA merch that's everywhere). I'm holding my breath for a Baja Fresh someday.

Walter Galt, Friday, 5 July 2013 11:52 (twelve years ago)

god i hate cpk

my eventual wife (stevie), Friday, 5 July 2013 11:57 (twelve years ago)

I like their salads. I haven't found a whole lot of places in the UK that make big, meal-sized salads with decent produce. The salad bar at my work canteen doesn't even have green things in it - today it's beetroot, sweetcorn, potatoes, shredded carrots, cole slaw, pinto beans. CPK salads are nice (if you get the dressing on the side, because they tend to drench them)

Walter Galt, Friday, 5 July 2013 12:08 (twelve years ago)

oh, i'm sure they are. i'm just a pizza purist. would much rather roberta's expanded to the uk though (but they are just one resto, not a chain)

Honestly, it's EVERYWHERE. They've marketed UCLA as a "designer brand."

Here are a couple of sections from some big shops/catalogs:

http://www.reemclothing.com/Mens-Clothing/UCLA-Designer-Clothing.html

http://www.next.co.uk/shop/brand-ucla-0

Walter Galt, Friday, 5 July 2013 15:46 (twelve years ago)

The world famous UCLA brand originated from the University of California in Los Angeles. This world renowned university was established in 1919 and a hoard of top celebrities graced its hallways back in the day including the ultra cool and distinguished James Dean and the Doors front man and rock legend Jim Morrison. Everyone has heard of the mighty UCLA and the beauty of its campuses, successful sporting heritage and overall laid back cool of the California lifestyle could mean only one thing - the UCLA clothing brand would be a massive hit.

I was sort of into Five Guys when they first opened here but it's been two years at least since I felt any real desire to go in there. Same goes for Shake Shack, for that matter.

Guayaquil (eephus!), Saturday, 6 July 2013 04:45 (twelve years ago)

lookin' fwd to trying these dudes out but we've had pretty good american-style burgers for a coupla years at least, cf byron. anyone remember the era of the gourmet burger co? seemed like the dawning of this era of superior-to-mcdonalds hamburgerage but i wouldn't eat one of their patties for any money now.

my eventual wife (stevie), Saturday, 6 July 2013 09:46 (twelve years ago)

Never appreciated GBK's artisanal bread and pineapple bullshit. Byron ok but not dirty enough.

ledge, Saturday, 6 July 2013 10:04 (twelve years ago)

Underwhelmed by shake shack, if five guys aren't any better I might have to become a burger sceptic again. Also not sure why they need over 20 people in a (tiny) kitchen, not to mention the four people on tills and ten or so scattered around outside doing table clearing and crowd control.

ledge, Saturday, 6 July 2013 12:21 (twelve years ago)

shake shack is only sort of okay here, too. the shakes are good, if pricey. and frozen custard is still a novelty in my book. but the burgers are just decent. also the lime-&-slate colo(u)r scheme is so teal&orange2.0

Ask The Answer Man (sexyDancer), Saturday, 6 July 2013 14:56 (twelve years ago)

i rate patty & bun pretty highly, though its always jam packed and you need to call ahead if ordering takeaway for six office dorks, like we did yesterday.

my eventual wife (stevie), Saturday, 6 July 2013 16:30 (twelve years ago)

do people not make hamburgers at home in the UK?
shake shack is alright, i guess. always seems a bit expensive.

i guess i'd just rather listen to canned heat? (ian), Saturday, 6 July 2013 16:49 (twelve years ago)

Five Guys is okay but expensive for what it is in the US - no choice of cheese/etc. so it's a trumped up In-n-Out Burger for twice the money.

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Saturday, 6 July 2013 16:54 (twelve years ago)

i make burgers at home and they are *delicious, but i cannot make them for lunch when i am working in an office.

my eventual wife (stevie), Saturday, 6 July 2013 16:58 (twelve years ago)

my secret? spread the patties with butter before frying them. i got that off bourdain.

my eventual wife (stevie), Saturday, 6 July 2013 16:58 (twelve years ago)

five guys buns turn to mush soggy 2 mins.
Unlimited peanuts though

Philip Nunez, Saturday, 6 July 2013 17:00 (twelve years ago)

Like all you can eat nut palace

Philip Nunez, Saturday, 6 July 2013 17:01 (twelve years ago)

Sort of intrigued by how brazen Five Guys is with the peanuts, for no good reason, given how strict so many other placers are with peanuts. All the peanut-sensitive kids probably have to cross the street when coming up on a Five Guys. I wonder if it matters with takeout, too? Peanut particles everywhere.

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 6 July 2013 17:23 (twelve years ago)

There's a very good reason, namely that free roasted peanuts in the shell are fucking awesome.

erry red flag (f. hazel), Saturday, 6 July 2013 18:47 (twelve years ago)

I've actually never seen too many people partake. I guess they claim their frying oil is less bad for allergies than other types of peanut oil, but the piles of actual peanuts make this moot. Legend goes the lines at the original location were so long they gave the peanuts out to sate hunger while the burgers were cooking. Now it's part of the brand, insists my wife, but afaic, the burgers and fries are the brand and I couldn't care less about the peanuts. Which is to say, if they were gone, I wouldn't be all "fuck Five Guys." I go for the meat and potatoes.

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 6 July 2013 18:51 (twelve years ago)

I'd still go for the Cajun fries, but I would really miss the free peanuts if they stopped. Actually a few years back they used to have salted *and* unsalted peanuts, and now only have salted. Which made me a bit sad, as I preferred the unsalted ones.
