I will explain when I can see properly through my tears of laughter.

Curt1s Stephens, Friday, 23 March 2007 05:18 (eighteen years ago)

The only YouTube video in which the comments are about as hilarious as the video.

(I have no idea what they say, it's just the endless streams of "ahahaha,,,,täitsa lõpp lihtsalt :D

You forgot to mention "UFO porn while some medicine man is watching...", which explains the faux African dude with a mask.

Scott - I specifically came here just now to post about that site! I've been watching it for ages - it's absolutely hysterical. "The bag is self-made. My style is like abstract funk japan punk . . . " etc. It has provided a lot of fascination and bewilderment amongst me and my friends. I think I love Finland.

ENBB, Sunday, 25 March 2007 17:20 (eighteen years ago)

That's one of the few street style blogs that didn't just make it through six months last year and then fall apart, too.

nabisco, Sunday, 25 March 2007 17:27 (eighteen years ago)

i definitely love finland. great metal. weird northern light hippies making strange noises on laptops and folke instruments. beautiful scenery. just need to wear a lot of layers...

My style is neo-conservative: I'm a walking contradiction because I respect the muslim traditions, but I mix traditional clothing with punk style. I'm sure there are no other muslim girls with a similar style in Finland.

daria-g, Monday, 26 March 2007 03:42 (eighteen years ago)

Tuomas, Monday, 26 March 2007 10:24 (eighteen years ago)

she's like a little piece of hardcore candy all wrapped up like that

Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved, Monday, 26 March 2007 10:26 (eighteen years ago)

A lot of the folks in those pics are art students and musicians, it's not like the streets of Helsinki are littered with people who look like that. Though the "manga goth" style seems to have become very popular amongst teenage girls during the last two or three years, as the pictures show.

Tuomas, Monday, 26 March 2007 10:37 (eighteen years ago)

Tuomas, is it considered unethical to buy new clothes at H&M? Does everyone's grandma have a closet full of totally hip clothes? Do friends share their clothes a lot? Is it totally accepted for boys to cross-dress and carry pink purses? Does everyone travel all the time to India and Japan? Does everyone know how to sew? Are there great thrift shops everywhere? These are my impressions from browsing those photos and quotes.

I so totally want to come to Finland. My grandpa came as a baby from Aland - I've got family there I've never met I could stay with as part of the trip. Summer is best time, no? Maybe summer 2008 or 2009.

Maria :D, Monday, 26 March 2007 10:59 (eighteen years ago)

tuomas, when is your birthday?

Eisbaer, Monday, 26 March 2007 13:44 (eighteen years ago)

June 21st, how come?

Maria, as I said a lot of these people are art students, musicians, and other "alternative" types. You'd find similar people in any big European city, it's not like they represent the mainstream. But yeah, a lot of these "alternative" people get their clothes from thrift shops, from their parents and grandparents, or they sew them theselves.

Tuomas, Monday, 26 March 2007 15:32 (eighteen years ago)

June 21st, how come?

well, i was gonna unleash this on your birthday as a present, but since i don't think that i'll remember the date i might as well do it now. enjoy!

The last time I ran down through all the style blogs I used to look at (or even just working through the links list at Facehunter), two thirds of them had either stopped updating or vanished entirely.

I should at least search through Facehunter and try to snap up the Most Amazing Swiss Girl Ever, in case of disappearance. There was this woman who was just ... possibly the best-dressed, best-looking person I've ever seen in my life.

nabisco, Monday, 26 March 2007 16:50 (eighteen years ago)

Haha, I spotted a couple of old flames going through all the Hel Looks pictures. But I guess that's inevitable in a town of this size.

Tuomas, Monday, 26 March 2007 17:09 (eighteen years ago)

Okay, I was over-remembering the greatness of the Geneva pic; not necessarily the best ever, but still about a million times beyond how nice I will ever even DREAM of looking while walking randomly down the street:

daria-g, Monday, 26 March 2007 19:39 (eighteen years ago)

What with having boy-parts and four whole freak beard-hairs, I am kinda partial to the Sartorialist. Did we ever have a style-blog thread, apart from just pic-flurries?

nabisco, Monday, 26 March 2007 19:46 (eighteen years ago)

Tuomas, we share the same birthday!

I recognize some of my former students in those pics (from when I taught at the University of Helsinki). Makes me wistful. I love those cheekbones!

guymauve, Monday, 26 March 2007 19:51 (eighteen years ago)

Built up or not, she's very pretty and pulls that off very well indeed.

ENBB, Monday, 26 March 2007 20:21 (eighteen years ago)

Also, I couldn't pull that off in a million years. Sadly. She is adorable and looks very petite. I'm 5'10" so the high waisted/pleated pants look would never work.

ENBB, Monday, 26 March 2007 20:24 (eighteen years ago)

nabisco, Monday, 26 March 2007 21:13 (eighteen years ago)

why not re: pleated/high waisted pants? if they fit right they'll make you look even taller.. I would wear them but i don't think it's a good cut for me

daria-g, Monday, 26 March 2007 21:22 (eighteen years ago)

That's just it, I don't think I need to look much taller! Also, I doubt they'd look right on me in general - I've never really gotten along well with pleats. They're great on her though.

ENBB, Monday, 26 March 2007 21:31 (eighteen years ago)

The thing that always gets me about the northern-European style blogs (especially with Finland) is that old-school hip-hop fashions have gotten hip there in these over-the-top cartoon ways that just wouldn't even BEGIN to be socially possible in the U.S. -- so you get blonde Scandinavian teenagers wearing gold chains and track suits and just ... my brain still doesn't know how to feel about it.

I am so much enjoying the Finnish style blog + commentary! But that 14-yr old is not in any way dressed "adult" at all AT ALL. Sophisticated for her age, undoubtedly! Waht hey, she looks great! Aaaaand totally unAmerican for a teenager, which is a relief. But baggy-ankled hose and mussily untucked shirts and minis and beaten-up flat shoes are not particularly adult by any standard...?

one of the best things I learned in Spy School was about this permanent president of Finland who used to practise Sauna Diplomacy with the Soviets. Which basically meant he would hang out in saunas with the Soviet leadership and sort out Soviet-Finnish problems. And he did this for 36 years.

I wish more countries practiced Sauna Diplomacy.

The Real Dirty Vicar, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 15:49 (eighteen years ago)

And drank insane amounts of vodka as well?

t**t, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 15:51 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, they say part of his success in negotiating with the Russians was that he had a good head for booze, which was very helpful because getting drunk was a semi-official part of the diplomatic meetings.

Tuomas, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 15:57 (eighteen years ago)

Though he was very good at playing the Russian card too: one of the main reasons people kept electing him again and again (after his presidency the law was changed so one could serve the maximum of two terms as a president) was that they thought he was the only one who could keep the Soviets off Finland's back.

Tuomas, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 16:02 (eighteen years ago)

Revealing dress and
other cultural traits
Compared to women in many
other countries, Finnish women are quite
free in the way they behave. They may
smile warmly, look you in the eyes and
dress revealingly. However, this does not
generally mean that they are loose-living
or particularly keen to engage in sexual
relations. Just like men, women may also
go together to parties, smoke and drink
alcohol.
One typical characteristic of the
Finns is punctuality. If, for example, it is
stated that a train will depart at 9.21, it
will depart at exactly 9.21. Many people
regard it as bad manners to arrive late.
However, if a delay appears inevitable,
people inform the person they are going
to meet by telephone so that he or she
does not have to wait in vain.
Finns are often described as quiet
and shy. They may be particularly
cautious if they have to speak a foreign
language. Finns have a great respect in
particular for other people’s privacy. For
example, it is commonplace for people to
agree in advance before visiting even
close friends.
Finns esteem hard work and
honesty. They are keen to demonstrate
that they are themselves persevering and
also value the same trait in others. Finns
are often delighted when immigrants
show an interest in learning Finnish.

Go on.

Tuomas, Thursday, 11 October 2007 11:58 (eighteen years ago)

These two Finnish guys go to a rave. After a couple of hours one says "Great pills". A couple of hours later the other says "Yeah. Really chatty".

Oh my sides.

The Real Dirty Vicar, Thursday, 11 October 2007 12:02 (eighteen years ago)

That is the only Finnish raver joke I know, but I did hear one from a Swede about Swedish and Finnish guys going on a drinking bender together. It is so teh roffle. I really am wasted in any career other than stand-up comedy.

The Real Dirty Vicar, Thursday, 11 October 2007 12:03 (eighteen years ago)

I think I've heard the raver joke before, but it's still funny. Can you share the other one?

Tuomas, Thursday, 11 October 2007 12:27 (eighteen years ago)

YES!

These two guys are in a bar. One is Swedish, the other Finnish. They are drinking shots of vodka. The barman pours each of them a shot, they drink it, then they nod at the barman and he refills their glasses. This goes on for some time. After many hours, the two have just emptied their glasses, and the Swedish guy says "Another drink?". The Finn replies "are you here to talk or to drink?"

The odd thing is that the Finnish people I have met have been no more taciturn than people from elsewhere.

Also, one of them told a story about a Finnish ethnographer trying to record folk dances before they disappeared; he said at the end of his efforts he realized a lot of the village people had been putting him on with dances involving hopping on one foot, and then the other, repeatedly, or titled things like "the French kiss."

As for crazy Finns this guy has been sort of a national hero here for the last year or two. Why? Because he failed to drink six glasses of Coke in a televised record-breaking attempt! (You can see the attempt in the video linked.) His excuse for failing, "It's so acidic!", has become a popular phrase for people to repeat, and it has also been printed on T shirts and stuff. There's also a Internet appeal to make Coke less acidic, so the guy can drink it more easily. I have no explanation for all this.

Tuomas, Thursday, 3 July 2008 11:33 (seventeen years ago)

That guy's a really popular comedian at the moment, he won the "sketch character of the year" contest (essentially a parody of reality TV where various comedy sketch characters compete against each other as if they were real) a couple of months ago.

Tuomas, Tuesday, 3 May 2011 20:31 (fourteen years ago)

Last year the contest was won by a female impostor, and now by an egg impostor - just shows you the quality of Finnish humour.

after 6 hours on the airplane in Helsinki they canceled the flight to Tokyo. it's pretty cold and snowy here today! trying to get out of here again. that's what I get for booking a flight through Finland in early January.

droit au butt (Euler), Sunday, 10 January 2016 08:10 (nine years ago)

at least I like Karelian pasties, had three last night and three this morning at the hotel breakfast.

also got Fazer salty popcorn chocolate with my Finnair voucher, always a favorite.
