They only sell mine in the shop where I got them so I couldn't find a picture online. Here is one of me wearing them instead!

I like both of yours!

i really love my snazzy ferragamo frames, but i abuse them pretty bad and the lenses pop out regularly. i've been thinking about making the switch to contact lenses, at least there are some types of contacts you can fall asleep wearing. :\

elmo argonaut, Monday, 26 March 2007 21:24 (eighteen years ago)

My specs are probably pushing five years old by now. I should replace them soon. You can see 'em in wdyll, on my face. I'm thinking maybe I should push toward something different, like old fashioned "birth control" two-tone frames.

Oilyrags, Monday, 26 March 2007 21:27 (eighteen years ago)

I don't care about the babies, sex would be absolutely spoiled by having to insert spec frames as contraception.

I love my new O&X glasses. Still looking for a decent pic.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 02:49 (eighteen years ago)

You know Ned, I still remember your olde classic dreamy pose photo wherein you had the classic '80s specs and I thought you still had those. The's some nice new specs there, but somehow the shattering of this image has saddened me. Who still bears the burden of '80s lenses?

Abbott, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 04:03 (eighteen years ago)

Actually I've had that pair for a long while now! All photos of me in the last few years are with that pair, so the image = long since shattered.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 04:15 (eighteen years ago)

I know, how old is that picture of you anyway? Forget a purple tie, KUCI oldskool is somehow mein Platonic Ned.

Abbott, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 04:18 (eighteen years ago)

Aw. (That photo is now I believe ten years old.)

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 04:25 (eighteen years ago)

I don't know what brand these are - the name is worn off - but they were cheap and look okay so I bought them. Actually, they are almost exactly like my last pair, except thinner and blacker.

When I was a kid I wanted glasses sooo bad. I think I even tried to fake an eye exam so I could get some. Never got them though. I won't go so far as to wear fake lenses though.

Actually, no. My teacher in the 2nd grade said I kept skipping lines when reading aloud. I still skip lines, constantly, when reading to myself.

dice in my pockets, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 05:28 (eighteen years ago)

Heehee, me too. Fortune struck me eventually.

Abbott, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 05:41 (eighteen years ago)

I didn't need glasses at all until my early twenties.
Now I'm kind of vaguely remembering some children's book where a kid wanted glasses like that and tried to fake bad vision, etc., but he also wanted to be an astronaut and someone told him he needed 20/20 vision for that and he felt better about not needing glasses. Ring a bell to anyone?

marmotwolof, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 05:48 (eighteen years ago)

I never understood kids who wanted eyeglasses, because I was stuck with them.

Maria, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 05:51 (eighteen years ago)

I had mine since I was three.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 05:53 (eighteen years ago)

I wear lenses, sorry :-(

StanM, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 06:08 (eighteen years ago)

Does anyone remember the sequel to "The Best Christmas Pageant Ever"? In it, so many people had braces that all the straightteeth wanted them. The main girl offered to make one of her friends braces for 25 cents. The she shoved bent paperclips all over them, which fucked up his mouth so bad he had to get braces. The moral is: ruin your body to achieve your dreams!

Abbott, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 06:09 (eighteen years ago)

No photos of *me* wearing them, but at the moment, exactly like these, right down to the tinting:

um, kinda like the colorblind kid in Little Miss Sunshine?

dice in my pockets, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 06:52 (eighteen years ago)

I always wanted glasses when I was little, because my mother had them and I always loved them. I got them when I was 27, thank you computers. I still love them. But that is partly because I R FATASS and clothes don't look great on me, but I can buy the same glasses as everybody else. Also I look better with glasses than without them.

accentmonkey, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 07:14 (eighteen years ago)

When I was a kid I wanted glasses sooo bad.

Me too. I was 4 or 5 and I cried and cried. The secretary at the optometrist gave me the dark plastic shades that they give you when they dialate your eyes.

Now I am *way* beyond legally blind. Curse my 4-year-old self!

I can't seem to find any decent ones of my sunglasses, they are red rimmed rectangular phillipe starcks.

Ed, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 09:41 (eighteen years ago)

I cant even remember what brand mine are so heres me in them, which you've all seen heaps anyhow:

http://www.memorygongs.com/lookup.jpg

They have cool red and black checkering on the inside part of theframe facing my face.

Trayce, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 09:49 (eighteen years ago)

The main ones are alain mikli. I'd like another pair with a different coloured frame

Ed, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 09:55 (eighteen years ago)

Mine are kind of the same shape as Trayce's, but they're all black.

They're by Animal, which makes it impossible to do Google Image Search for. Although of course pages and pages of animals wearing glasses is a worthwhile distraction.

Colonel Poo, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 09:55 (eighteen years ago)

I cant check my brand,. cos *laughs* when I take them off to read the label I can't see :(

Trayce, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 09:58 (eighteen years ago)

Is Jenny Ally's sister?

StanM, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 10:02 (eighteen years ago)

I have never had a girlfriend who didn't need glasses. Luck, fetishism, obvious-joke-about-their-taste, who knows.

Mark C, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 10:44 (eighteen years ago)

Whoever said 'men never make passes at women who where glasses' was a fool.

Ed, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 10:50 (eighteen years ago)

That's comforting.

I can't find a picture of my glasses because the inside of the frame just says "Average Eyewear" (obviously not a famous brand, haha, but I don't even know if that is the brand name because it is so stupid). I like them a lot, though, I went to get my lenses replaced last week and insisted on keeping my frames even though the people working there kept telling me, "But your insurance will cover new frames, too!"

Maria, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 12:44 (eighteen years ago)

I think I go for glasses wearers over non-glasses wearers, I think they set off the face so well. They are the nearest I ever get to jewellery.

Ed, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 12:50 (eighteen years ago)

One of the lenses kept falling out of my glasses, I finally got round to going back to the opticians because the screw was getting knackered from repeatedly tightening it, turns out they are SHODDY and the lense is too small for the frame! They're making me a new pair, free obv.

Colonel Poo, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 12:52 (eighteen years ago)

I really should wear glasses all the time, (one long-sighted eye, one short), but I can get away without them still. I'm interested in what Ed said about him seeing them as an enhancement to a face, because I used to use them a lot more when I had a lot less confidence and wanted to feel inconspicuous. I know the idea of hiding behind a pair of glasses is faintly ridiculous, esp. when they're not sunnies, but it seemed to work for me. Caveat: that doesn't reflect on anyone else's glasses wearing (i.e. I don't see anyone else as less conspicuous just becasue they wear glasses); just my own.

I also have a pair a lot like this:

http://www.specsavers.co.uk/specsavers_2005/images/frames/detail/1002630.jpg

Again, the colours are kind of washed out - they are actually purpley-blue and fuchsia pink. I think.

Masonic Boom, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 13:35 (eighteen years ago)

i just bought new paul smith specs last week and i love them! i've been itching to make a change from my black-frame plastic frames for ages... annoyingly i can't find a pic of them anywhere, but these are close:

they are Jones New York.

I stopped wearing contacts about 8 years ago and am fine with glasses. except I've never really figured out how to wear eye makeup with them.

Ms Misery, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 14:25 (eighteen years ago)

I can't really figure out the eye makeup and glasses thing either so when I'm wearing mine I usually just use mascara and then break out the lipgloss!

K8's specs pwn all.

Do any of you have RX sunglasses? That is an investment that would be kinda nice but I doubt I'll ever make it.

Mr. Que advises that I replace them. Inclined to agree. A random woman on the bus the other day told me I look like Elton John. Umm, do you mean that I look old, or weird, or gay, or just that I have bad glasses?

Pye Poudre, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 19:43 (eighteen years ago)

Masonic Boom, Thursday, 29 March 2007 17:15 (eighteen years ago)

I have Elton John mouth? Sounds dirty. Maybe it's 'cuz I have no lips. Does Elton John have lips?

Anyway, my GF put this inflating gloss on my lips the other day. A topical irritant. Made me look extra fruity, but with luciously plump, kissable lips. Then it went away, which was a relief, but one tinged with regret.

Pye Poudre, Thursday, 29 March 2007 17:16 (eighteen years ago)

one month passes...
This is the thread revival where I ask you to help me find something: those 50s/60s-style eyeglasses with a plastic frame for the top/temples but a thin metal frame running under the lenses! As associated with like early-60s SCIENTISTS and/or Malcolm X, per this website that sells cheap costumey frames:

http://www.dowahdiddy.com/eyeglasses/malcolmx.jpg

nabisco, Monday, 7 May 2007 19:53 (eighteen years ago)

try vintage shops or ask eye places (not ones like lenscrafters) if they sell vintage frames.

Ms Misery, Monday, 7 May 2007 19:54 (eighteen years ago)

Haha xpost

(In other words, does anyone currently make decent varieties of these, or is there even some sort of general name for them that might help with search, or really anything else that might help me locate a pair of these apart from the obvious step of going to an eyeglass boutique and asking.)

nabisco, Monday, 7 May 2007 19:55 (eighteen years ago)

I need some nice wire frames, rectangular-shaped. I have only one pair of glasses and the prescription is from before I even met my wife! I need some so that my eyes do not die from crazy all-night edit sessions. Why are they all so expensive???

admrl, Monday, 7 May 2007 20:34 (eighteen years ago)

I used to wear vintage, rhinestone, cat-eyes and my then boyfriend wore vintage frames like the ones Nabisco posted.

vintage frames are great, but they kind of gave me a headache due to not fitting my face right. . .

Ms Misery, Monday, 7 May 2007 20:36 (eighteen years ago)

i haven't gotten new glasses in 2 years, and i'm too broke & unemployed & uninsured to get them anyways. zennioptical.com seems good tho.

remy bean, Monday, 7 May 2007 20:36 (eighteen years ago)

I have a funky prescription - I have an astigmatism and have to buy the super super thin super expensive lenses or look like Millhouse.

admrl, Monday, 7 May 2007 20:38 (eighteen years ago)

FYI, I spent months looking for Shurons in Canada. Nobody here carries them. And I didn't want to order online, as you can't be sure you're getting the right size, etc, and most places seem to charge as much or more if you get your lenses in someone elses frames...

Will M., Monday, 7 May 2007 20:42 (eighteen years ago)

I've got a long face and a broken nose. There are no glasses that look cool on me, so I wear frameless ones.

Pleasant Plains, Monday, 7 May 2007 20:45 (eighteen years ago)

Will, I don't know if the stuff they say on http://www.shuron.com/unable.htm is USA only?

We will exchange as many times as necessary for proper sizing/colors at no charge and Any optical outlet can order Shuron products if they are willing. We have no special requirements.

or something else? i like clear frames, but i think i look silly in glasses that are not squarish

remy bean, Friday, 21 March 2008 19:47 (seventeen years ago)

latter. others are a little too...too.

i actually really think the second one looks cool without looking like theyre trying too hard to be weird.

deeznuts, Friday, 21 March 2008 19:48 (seventeen years ago)

i think the top ones look like a hammer, actually ... a little art-schooly

those look shahhhp felicity

tho personally ive tried on fairly similar glasses & looked like rivers quomo [this is bad]; in almost any other kind of frame i am just told i look like a scientist. they add a lot of iq points but seem to detract from the sexiness quotient, which is why im kinda curious about this thread. help remy find the perfect medium guys.

deeznuts, Friday, 21 March 2008 20:04 (seventeen years ago)

Thanks dn!

remy I meant I need to see them on you. Shape and color can vary so much per person.

ten years pass...

i'm finally about to get a pair of eyeglasses for the first time. i am the opposite of stylish, in general. can someone give me a quick tutorial on what looks good on a guy in the year 2018? i would like to look "good" but i'm not trying to make a statement, if you know what i mean. should i be thinking about my face shape and hair (which right now, ugh for me, fucking ugh) and all of that stuff, or is there a good generic style i can start with? is there some sort of go-to online guide where i can upload a picture and try out different frames? what do you all wear? etc

Karl Malone, Friday, 7 September 2018 18:57 (seven years ago)

can someone give me a quick tutorial

this is obnoxious, sorry. a good link would suffice. there's just so much out there and since i don't generally spend much time reading about stylish things i don't really have a reliable online source that i would trust.

Karl Malone, Friday, 7 September 2018 19:00 (seven years ago)

i had a pair of wood-like frames from SEE for a long time. some, if not most, of SEE's frames are obnoxious but i really like a few of them.

i also recently bought a pair of round wire frames, abbott i think, from warby parker. they are pretty understated but i get a lot of nice compliments on them. i was inspired by so many of the international students from japan, korea, and china on campus here who are wearing round wire frames, it seems like the main style among them, and they are classic imo. wp is relatively cheap and easy to order, try on, & return. just do that - they have a free try-on period for up to a bunch of frames at once and also a 30-day return period.

i've heard folks talk a lot about zenni optical for really, really cheap frames. i think i might give them a try. they have a ton of different styles.

marcos, Friday, 7 September 2018 19:03 (seven years ago)

best thing to do is just go to a shop and try stuff on to see what works and what doesn't. then venture into online shops. so many frames i think look cool and then i try them on and they aren't right for me.

marcos, Friday, 7 September 2018 19:04 (seven years ago)

i recently got some browline (malcolm x) type frames and am afraid they're too bold or else out of date.... but they look like glasses i used to have and i liked them back then so

I got these with clear frames and tortoise-shell temples.

Wow - I don't recall ever seeing a pic of Ms Misery before.

Foolishly I let my optician choose my frames thinking she knew what she was doing as she seemed so confident, but she choose ones slightly too big. My glasses are so expensive (because of super thin lenses) I wont be able to replace them for a couple of years at least.

Luna Schlosser, Friday, 7 September 2018 20:59 (seven years ago)

thanks for the tips! I think the biggest takeaway is that I can just choose from a few options online and try them out before sending some back, Zappos style. I should have guessed that was an option, but I hadn't even thought about it.

Karl Malone, Friday, 7 September 2018 21:00 (seven years ago)

Get the shape right for your face first. Trendy shapes become trendy because they are connected to a particular look, often on a television actor or popular musician. It may look like shit on you, because they have totally different facial features or face-shape from you. Then make sure YOU think they look good when you put them on. Your confidence in your look is more important than mimicking whatever is popular right now. The color should be based on your skin tone and shouldn't clash with it.

There you have the sum and substance of all I know about choosing glasses.

I find the best thing is to find a good optician. they can help you choose, do the necessary measurements, do follow up adjustments etc.

niels, Saturday, 8 September 2018 08:56 (seven years ago)

I think you gotta try on a zillion pairs unless you get lucky, but never accept less than the feeling that they just look and feel *right* in some deep way. if you feel like you are talking yourself into them because you're sick of looking, walk away

The Desus & Mero Chain (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Saturday, 8 September 2018 15:56 (seven years ago)

this is all good advice, thanks everyone. trying to find a pair of glasses that make *me* feel good wasn't something i was even thinking about, although now i see that i should. tbh i was planning on leaning on my partner's opinion for 90% of the decision because she's the one who has to look at me all the time
