What's your daily caffeine intake like?

I can't start the day without a large cup of tea, sometimes two. Then maybe a coffee around mid-morning.

Do you crave caffeine?

C J, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 08:09 (eighteen years ago)

coffee or tea in the morning, at breakfast

coffee on arrival at work

coffee after lunch

1,2 or 3 cups of tea in the evening.

'Tea' may be lemon tea, green tea or jasmine tea. Wait, does jasmine tea have caffeine in it?

Grandpont Genie, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 08:10 (eighteen years ago)

I don't think so.

C J, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 08:14 (eighteen years ago)

Grande white from Nero's first thing, then talls from Costa (we have one in the building. It's ok, but it's a shame it's not something better) at 11, 2, ~3:30 and then about two or three strong americanos from the espresso machine at home of an evening (that thing is still one of my best purchases ever). I should just post a picture of the permanently wired kid from South Park on the WDYLL thread.

peteR, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 09:15 (eighteen years ago)

i stopped drinking coffee, and all caffeine, about a month ago. my head still feels foggy.

jergincito, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 09:17 (eighteen years ago)

A ferinstance...

1) Tea on waking
2) Coffee before leaving for work
3) Coffee on getting there
4)-5) 2 coffees during morning
6) Coffee at Lunchtime
7)-8) Coffees during afternoon
9) coffee before leaving work (optional)
10) Tea on getting home
11) Coffee after dinner
12) Tea a bit later
13) coffee..

and maybe:
14) If cannot sleep, tea at 02:00. Decaff, obv.

Mark G, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 09:20 (eighteen years ago)

I don't worry about caffeine intake, it's all that milk stuff I have to put in my tea, foul horrid muck

Tom D., Tuesday, 27 March 2007 09:22 (eighteen years ago)

I have a cup when I get into work, or (as in today) when I can be bothered to put some on if nobody's done it yet. I've got some crumpets in the toaster at the moment, when I've had my breakfast I'll make some coffee. Normally I have it earlier but there were problems to fix when I got in.

Then I usually have a cup mid-afternoon to break up the afternoon.

If I go drinking at lunchtime, this increases to 3 cups or so.

Colonel Poo, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 09:31 (eighteen years ago)

I have an oversensitivity to caffeine, but I seem to be beating it down. I have a cup of filter coffee with breakfast (at my desk at work, 10am), maybe another one mid morning (say 11.30), then another either straight after lunch (certain foods sort of "require" coffee to digest properly) or, more usually, at about 4.30 - if I'm feeling like treating myself I get it from Flat White on Berwick Street.

I *definitely* can't drink coffee after 6pm, unless it's at the end of a long boozy meal.

Mark C, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 10:20 (eighteen years ago)

Oh, and I drink tea, which I make fairly weak in any case, about once a fortnight; coke and other caffeinated pops I only ever drink when on holiday.

Mark C, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 10:21 (eighteen years ago)

I never ever drink coffee from coffee shops or stalls. maybe this would change if I was rich.

Grandpont Genie, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 10:21 (eighteen years ago)

Jasmine tea - green tea + jasmine so yes, it does indeed have caffeine in it.

I've got down to a cup of regular tea in the morning and one cup of green tea in the afternoon, but I'm about to go and blow it by drinking coffee.

Masonic Boom, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 10:22 (eighteen years ago)

2 cups of coffee (espresso, I s'ppose) every morning, or else I get a headache. (This happens if I sleep too late as well.)

G00blar, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 10:23 (eighteen years ago)

m coleman, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 10:23 (eighteen years ago)

^^of coffee

m coleman, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 10:24 (eighteen years ago)

I'm having my morning coffee now! Yum.

I also virtually never ever drink coffee from shops, unless I've actually gone to meet someone for lunch or something. We have a coffee maker in our office kitchen so don't really need to go out for it. And I just drink instant at home at weekends.

Colonel Poo, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 10:25 (eighteen years ago)

Celebrating 30 years of glorious caffeine addiction this year, yay! But I am down to two cups of coffee a day.

Rock Hardy, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 10:52 (eighteen years ago)

I'd been drinking coffee for around 20 years, 2 sugars.

One day, ran out of sugar but needed one. So, what the heck, gave up sugar right there.

Since then, I rediscovered new tastes of all the coffees I really liked.

Mark G, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 11:00 (eighteen years ago)

I'm looking forward to such an epiphany in about, say, five years.

G00blar, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 11:08 (eighteen years ago)

I've always disliked sugar in coffee. But I like it in tea for some reason.

Colonel Poo, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 11:34 (eighteen years ago)

xpost actually, looking forward to one is classic, too...

Mark G, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 11:36 (eighteen years ago)

I usually have one to three cups a day, one with almost every meal (except breakfast when I just eat cereal). I have only afternoon classes, so I often drink it at lunch, and sometimes I like to have a cup with or after dinner. Also a cup of tea in the afternoon or evening a few times a week, but the caffeine has no effect there. Perhaps I drink coffee too much, as it wakes me up sometimes when I'm really sleepy but never keeps me up or gets me wired. I really love coffee though, it's one of my regular guilty pleasures.

Maria, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 12:04 (eighteen years ago)

I also a lazy git.

If no-one offers to make the coffee, it's amazing how my caffeine intake reduces to nothing.

(at home, I am primary drinkmaker, however)

Mark G, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 12:06 (eighteen years ago)

A matutinal double espresso usually does the trick, though I occasionally have a single after dinner on the weekend.

Michael White, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 14:14 (eighteen years ago)

I don't drink coffee, but I average six or seven cups of tea a day.

chap, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 14:23 (eighteen years ago)

I have a coffee before work and two once I get there. I'll then have another one in the afternoon at around 3 or 4 o'clock. I have it with either skim or soy milk and no sugar. In the evening I tend to have at leat one Diet Coke. While this is probably more caffeine than I should be having, I've never considered cutting back. There are more pressing vices I should probably consider stopping instead like, for instance, smoking.

ENBB, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 14:23 (eighteen years ago)

-hmm, in the winter I'll have a cup of coffee once I get to work. Come spring that stops though I might have on with breakfast on the weekend.

-I'll usually have two-three diet dr. peppers during the day. One at lunch and the other at various times when I feel sleepy. If I have lunch out I'll have iced tea.

-Maybe a DDP with dinner but only if it's early.

I should get a good kettle and start drinking tea. It's yum and less caffiene than coffee (I think).

Ms Misery, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 14:30 (eighteen years ago)

three cups coffee in the morning, sometimes grab a cup while waiting to pick up my daughter at hebrew school or musical practice or something; never at night unless we're out to dinner, in which case always

tea always decaffeinated

Dimension 5ive, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 14:31 (eighteen years ago)

I lurve the green tea and herbals, but black tea makes me barf. Seriously, always has, and I don't know why, because I love spicy stuff and the kind of stuff that irritates other people's stomachs, but black tea makes me ralph inside of about 10 minutes without fail. It comes on very suddenly, too, I break a sweat and turn green and puke within about one minute.

I drink about three cups of coffee a day.

kenan, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 14:41 (eighteen years ago)

Two cups of coffee first thing in the morning, otherwise I get violent.

fife, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 15:06 (eighteen years ago)

305 a day. It says something about me that I look at the caffeinated water section on that test and go 'blecch'.

accentmonkey, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 15:07 (eighteen years ago)

Wow. Two cups of tea and two cups of coffee a day = 300mg caffeine, according to that caffeine calculator site. That sounds a lot!

C J, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 15:07 (eighteen years ago)

305 a day. It says something about me that I look at the caffeinated water section on that test and go 'blecch'.

130mg a day, but I'm guessing that I might be less, because green tea doesn't appear to be listed separately.

Masonic Boom, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 15:11 (eighteen years ago)

1 liter of Diet Coke/dr Depper per day, and maybe one or two cans of generic diet cola. I try to stay jacked all day at work.

kingfish, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 15:12 (eighteen years ago)

You ever notice that nobody drinks diet cola casually? It's either not at all, or a SUBSTITUTE FOR WATER or something.

Will M., Tuesday, 27 March 2007 15:14 (eighteen years ago)

I knew a guy who literally would not drink water, because he didn't like it, and why bother when he could drink diet coke? He had type 1 diabetes, iirc (the child one) but was like 25. He went through like 2 or 3 liters of that shit a day. I knew another guy who at his worst point would drink 4-6L a day. And then there's my dad who always needs to have it in the house. It's like a cult of flavour.

I'm allergic to aspartame so I can never get to see what the appeal is :(

Will M., Tuesday, 27 March 2007 15:16 (eighteen years ago)

I think Coke is horrible in all its forms (and Pepsi even more so).

chap, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 15:18 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, I'm more concerned about my intake of diet coke because of the sweetners, nevermind the caffeine. If I have a 2 liter bottle at home, I can easily drink that in an evening. I've been trying to cut back but it's so hard. That said, I also drink 2 liters of water a day so maybe that evens it out? Maybe?

ENBB, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 15:18 (eighteen years ago)

Can a large amount of caffeine approximate the effect of cocaine? Is it in the same neighborhood?

fife, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 15:26 (eighteen years ago)

Well, first friend who is diabetic and drinks diet coke, has done a lot of research and there's absolutely no solid proof pointing to the fact that /anything/ in diet coke is bad for you, and a rather unbiased, scientific friend has done similar research and backed him up (by research I mean, like, internet + the ingredient list... they're good at google, but take that at face value, right?). So it's possible it's no problem at all.

Will M., Tuesday, 27 March 2007 15:27 (eighteen years ago)

Aspartame is only bad for you if heated. However, when it IS heated, it is horrifically poisonous stuff.

(I can't have it anyway, it gives me horrible headaches - maybe I'm allergic, too.)

Masonic Boom, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 15:28 (eighteen years ago)

220 mg/day. I can live with that. Back when I drank a whole pot of coffee every day, missing one cup gave me a headache. Now if I just drink one cup instead of two for some reason, it's no problem.

My wife's numbers are probably off the chart. At least two liters of Diet Pepsi and a fair amt. of chocolate every day.

Rock Hardy, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 15:30 (eighteen years ago)

290 a day

Michael White, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 15:30 (eighteen years ago)

It's either not at all, or a SUBSTITUTE FOR WATER or something.

Like I said I average three cans of diet soda a day but probably drink 2-3 liters of water a day.

sodas are bad for your teeth and any acid reflux problems though.

Ms Misery, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 15:31 (eighteen years ago)

Caffeine is a depressant, cocaine a stimulant.

So I was told, once.

Mark G, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 15:31 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, Mboom, I get headaches too, but also terrible, churning, life-might-be-ending-I'm-not-sure stomach pain, and one time I almost passed out and started seeing those spots in the sides of my eyes. I think they've linked aspartame to migraines, but my dad, a long-time insano migraine sufferer, writes it off as hogwash while he washes his anti-headache pills down with DIET COKE WITH LIME, OOOOOH FANCY.

Will M., Tuesday, 27 March 2007 15:33 (eighteen years ago)

It's not warning me of xposts! Weird.

I am pretty sure caffeine is a stimulant. Never heard of it as a depressant... alcohol, perhaps, but not caffeine.

Will M., Tuesday, 27 March 2007 15:34 (eighteen years ago)

I always thought aspartame was a carcinogen.

C J, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 15:34 (eighteen years ago)

Yes, it's given me stomach cramps before, but mainly it's the headaches. Just a quick google of heated +aspartame gives all kinds of scary health aspartame-related stories.

Masonic Boom, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 15:34 (eighteen years ago)

If I'm staying at home: 2 cups of coffee before I leave the house, then a cup of tea when I get to work, then about 3-4 more cups of tea through the day.

If I'm at my girlfriend's, I somehow manage to cope without the first two cups of coffee, though.

Forest Pines, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 15:36 (eighteen years ago)

i went from v minor intake and zero addiction to caffeine 3 months ago to 100% addiction now. and i fully blame coffee. because coffee is so good. i make it in a metal espresso-type stovetop vacuum thing, with org fairtrade wonderbeans (but only 1.5 to 2 tbsp ground for each cup of water - i have no idea if this is too little or what), so it is all flavour and richness all the time.

started with only 1 coffee in the morning but starting to have mid-morning coffee too.
this thread makes me feel better about it.

rrrobyn, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 16:55 (eighteen years ago)

jel --, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 17:11 (eighteen years ago)

I calculated estimates of various coffee & soda contents. Based on the size of coffees I drink, the beans used, and the French press method, I figure that I am drinking 600-800 mg a day of the caffiends, and that I will probably get osteoporosis someday.

Abbott, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 17:27 (eighteen years ago)

I'm doing about 300 mg a day, I imagine. That list is weird to me; it has every beverage in the world on it, and I don't drink any of them except straight up, ol' fashunned coffee.

7-up used to have lithium, which may 'splain why it was popular in the great depression.

When I was working 70-hour weeks graveyard, I was just the coffee guzszler (I just always stole from the espresso machine meant to serve customers during the day). SusanD, Wednesday, 28 March 2007 07:30 (eighteen years ago)

I've always enjoyed the taste of Red Bull. Also the carbonation level, versus soda. I think I started in on it a bit much last summer, as a coffee substitute during hot months, and after a while it became not only a standard morning caffeine source, but a giant morning sugar dump as well. (The caffeine level is way below coffee; it's the sugar that's bound to be a problem.) It doesn't help that my office vending machine sells it for $1.25, and that they don't stock the sugar-free variety.

nabisco, Wednesday, 28 March 2007 20:01 (eighteen years ago)

fun facts from wiki

Sold as an energy drink to combat mental and physical fatigue, it contains, per 250 ml (8.3 U.S. fl. oz.) serving, about 27 g of sugar (glucose, sucrose), 1000 mg of taurine, 600 mg of glucuronolactone, B-complex vitamins and 80 mg of caffeine. The caffeine in one serving is less than that found in an average cup of coffee (typically 100 mg/250-ml cup) or twice as much as found in a can of Coke (40 mg/330-ml can).

but here's where it gets good

Taurine is named after the Latin taurus, which means bull, as it was first isolated from ox (Bos taurus) bile as well as semen in 1827 by German scientists Friedrich Tiedemann and Leopold Gmelin.

kenan, Wednesday, 28 March 2007 20:11 (eighteen years ago)

I only have caffeine rarely. Mostly I drink that Original Good Earth tea stuff (yummy). Occasionally I'll have chai. Coffee is strictly for roadtrips when I have to be awake for extended periods.

Shakey Mo Collier, Wednesday, 28 March 2007 20:15 (eighteen years ago)

The only thing it really gives you in excess (apart from personal considerations about how much blood-sugar spiking you feel like doing) is that buttload of B vitamins. Like "oops, over the course of the day I've ingested 650% of my USRDA of vitamin B6." But at the peak of my issue I actually bothered checking what level of B vitamins you had to be getting to cause any negative issues, and it would have taken like 14 Red Bulls a day to get near it.
