ghost rider, Friday, 6 April 2007 06:24 (eighteen years ago)

ghost rider, Friday, 6 April 2007 06:25 (eighteen years ago)

night shift because his shit was still fresh then.

you omitted that Electronic Voice Phenomenon bullshit from a couple years back, that looked almost funny enough to watch

gershy, Friday, 6 April 2007 06:33 (eighteen years ago)

Beetlejuice and Clean & Sober.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Friday, 6 April 2007 13:02 (eighteen years ago)

gershy, you'd think that, but you'd be wrong.

BTW, White Noise spawned a straight-to-DVD sequel starring the dude from Firefly and the soon-to-be FOX smash hit Drive. So yeah.

David R., Friday, 6 April 2007 13:38 (eighteen years ago)

i sobered up and voted for beetlejuice but now i wish i'd voted for batman returns ;_;

David R., Friday, 6 April 2007 13:42 (eighteen years ago)

that movie is the best

and what, Friday, 6 April 2007 13:49 (eighteen years ago)

He was in Jackie Brown? My memory is a pretty fucked up broken machine. I can't remember this... at all.
And, oh man, if I met him, I'd hump his leg until it turned purple.

keaton plays the same character in jackie brown & out of sight, agent ray nicolette.

s1ocki, Friday, 6 April 2007 14:29 (eighteen years ago)

Is there a Ray Nicolette book that cd be made into a movie? I want MK to do a movie I have interest in seeing, dammit.

David R., Friday, 6 April 2007 14:30 (eighteen years ago)

i really loved mr mom, gung ho and johnny dangerously as a kid. he's a great actor, good enough to make me wanna see a piece of trash like multiplicity. i think i like him best in 'the paper', but he's never anything less that absolutely watchable in anything he's in.

What's the one where he's a condemned murderer but the guy who convicted him has to cut a deal or he won't let them use his organ which is an exact match for his dying son. also when he touches people he can transfer his consciousness into them, so that's how he escapes the electric chair? I saw the trailer for this once, and never figured out what it was.

weird how no one's picked him up for a eccentric doctor/detective/etc type tv show, he seems totally ripe for that kinda midsized rennaissance

peter in montreal, Friday, 9 July 2010 02:27 (fourteen years ago)

oh wait, it was this, which may or may not be the movie you're talking about

San Francisco police officer Frank Connor is in a frantic search for a compatible bone marrow donor for his gravely ill son. There's only one catch the potential donor is convicted multiple murderer Peter McCabe who sees a trip to the hospital as the perfect opportunity to get what he wants most freedom. With McCabe's escape, the entire hospital becomes a battleground and Connor must pursue and, ironically, protect the deadly fugitive who is his son's only hope for survival.

Yes! This must be it -- is it any good? I always thought that Keaton was in that class of comics (Robin Williams, Rodney Dangerfield) that would excel at psychopath roles.

Philip Nunez, Friday, 9 July 2010 19:32 (fourteen years ago)

honestly barely remember anything about it, so probably not remarkable in any way. The only thing I remember about it really is a scene where the Michael Keaton character is in prison and is working out by lifting plastic bags filled with water. Not sure why that single scene made enough of an impression on me that I actually still remember it 12 years later but there you go.

peter in montreal, Friday, 9 July 2010 19:42 (fourteen years ago)

Michael Keaton on Marc Maron's WTF podcast today :D :D :D
I can't even tell you how happy the sound of his voice is making me. omg.

I've been trying to find this clip of him on Ellen from like, 2004/5 - she found out he had always wanted to be a TV weatherman, so she had a green screen set up for him and they did a weather report together. It was the best

Actually, Keaton's involvement is the first and only thing I've heard about this that makes it seem like something less than a travesty against god and nature.

Reception

The movie had a positive reception.[1][2]

johnny crunch, Thursday, 3 January 2013 23:20 (twelve years ago)

I feel like I've said this elsewhere but Keaton is someone I like a lot who (to me) has never been given the showcase that best suits him (Beetlejuice probably came the closest, but I would've loved to see him do something with the same energy but a little less high-concept. Or Multiplicity but a less shitty movie.).

Songs In The Key Of Lice (Old Lunch), Friday, 4 January 2013 00:03 (twelve years ago)

horseshoe or someone said way upthread about how he needs to have a tv show written for him by the Damages ppl or something

I really want him to have a huge, blow-everyone's-wigs-back comeback...and have it really LAST, so that eventually all anyone remembers are his awesome movies and x amazing longrunning tv show he did

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 4 January 2013 00:06 (twelve years ago)

YES to Keaton-centric cable drama. It's such a brilliant and obvious idea, naturally no TV exec has tried to make it happen.

mind = blown

(from the Grantland interview linked upthread)

Daniel: How about Lost? You were going to be Jack Shephard in Lost. That true?

Michael: Yeah, that one is true. J.J. [Abrams], who I think is fantastic, said "Hey, man, I want to talk to you about something." So we sat and had coffee or lunch. And he said, "I'm doing this show," and I said, "Oh, yeah, OK," and he said, "You probably don't want to do a television show," and I said, "No, not really. Honestly, I'm not particularly interested in doing anything right now." And he said, "Well, let me explain it to you," and he tells me about the setup, and I go, "Oh wow, that's really a good idea," and I'm not revealing anything here now because I'm pretty sure the show's not even on anymore, is it?

Daniel: No.

Michael: So he explains to me there's this thing in the jungle and what happens is, we're watching the show, and here's our lead guy, and he comes up to this thing — this force — and just when you think he's going to do this really heroic thing confronting it, he gets killed. So he wanted to fake the audience out and just [snaps] kill the lead character and make the audience go, "Whoa, now what are they going to do?" Which I thought was going to be really gutsy.

Daniel: Amazing. That the show could have been so different …

Michael: I think the network said, "No, no, no, you can't do that." So he changed his mind and called and said, "Do you want to do it anyway?" and I said "No, I probably don't … I don't really feel like doing an hour-long TV show every week." When it first started, I thought it was well done.

Daniel: It was a really great show. But it would have had a totally different tenor had you been in it.

Michael: [laughs] Yeah.

Daniel: You also initially turned down Quentin Tarantino for Jackie Brown?

Michael: I said no three times, but I also said no to Beetlejuice three times. And not because, "Oh, no, it's not good enough." It was because I didn't know how to do it, so I just said "no thank you."

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 4 January 2013 00:44 (twelve years ago)

and the stuff abt Tarantino close-talking, LOL

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 4 January 2013 00:46 (twelve years ago)

Daniel: But from that movie came one of the coolest cinematic devices of all time: You took that same Elmore Leonard character you did from Jackie Brown, Ray Nicolette, and the next year you reprised the character for Steven Soderbergh in Out of Sight. Your character hopped from one movie right into the other.

Michael: Yeah, I've never seen that done — ever. And I hope I'm not getting too esoteric about this, but it was almost like postmodernism.

Daniel: If people are still reading this far into this article, they're obviously pretty big Michael Keaton fans — I don't think you can get too esoteric for them.

Michael: What I felt was: It's like he exists in the world. He might show up in your barbershop, you know what I mean? Different studio, different script, different story, different director. Everything is different, and all of a sudden, this guy shows up again. And I thought, Man, it would be cool — I'd just like to show up again somewhere else.

this guy is awesome

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 4 January 2013 00:56 (twelve years ago)

Daniel: All right. (3) You ever meet a president?

Michael: Clinton and Obama and … uh … didn't meet Carter. Clinton and Obama.

Daniel: And?

Michael: Yeah, first words out of Obama's mouth — and again, I was just meeting the man who was about to become the leader of the free world. He's walking down the hallway, arms outstretched like this to greet me — and his first sentence to me was, "Why don't you make more movies?"

EVEN THE GODDAMN PRESIDENT AGREES WITH ME

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 4 January 2013 00:58 (twelve years ago)

he said, "I'm doing this show," and I said, "Oh, yeah, OK," and he said, "You probably don't want to do a television show," and I said, "No, not really. Honestly, I'm not particularly interested in doing anything right now."

That's what I had heard/read -- he has plenty of offers for television and some movies, but he's not interested in working.

this will surprise many (Nicole), Friday, 4 January 2013 01:01 (twelve years ago)

he said in the Maron interview today that some of it was also that he kinda made himself hard to cast, becuase he did so many different roles. and he definitely looks for things that are well written, or, I'm guessing here, more completely on the page

he should really listen to us though

hanging out with QT:

Michael: So we went out. There used to be a place on Sunset where he'd hang out, called Coach & Horses I think …

Daniel: Yeah. Know it well. Left my credit card there a couple times …

Michael: Exactly. So we were hanging out, and he was drinking, and by this time, he was already 40 or something, and he's drinking Jägermeister, like some kind of frat boy. Who even drinks that? So he's drinking pretty good, and he's already pretty much in his — what's the expression? In his cups? — and he talks nonstop. And all I know is at some point in the evening [Michael stands up and gets his face about as close to mine without actually touching noses]3 — and I don't mean to invade your space here, but I was like this [backing away a little], and he was like this [moves his face closer to mine] and I remember thinking, He's too close to my face. How do I get back there? I don't know how to move my head back.

Daniel: You don't want to be rude, but …

Michael: Yeah, but at the same time I'm thinking, How do I get out of here? I mean, I don't even know how we got this close talking, anyway.

Innaritu is generally poison but this might turn out OK if the co-writers successfully kept his usual portentous bullshit out of the way

So much enthusiasm for Keaton yet nobody seems to have seen his directorial debut. I haven't seen it yet either but I'm surprised.

He's also pretty central in Larry David's Clear History.

Not that much of a fan--Jackie Brown's probably the only film he's done that means anything to me--but I thought he was impressive in The Company, the CIA mini-series from a few years ago. Very unusual performance--took a while to warm to him, but eventually the character came into focus. Chris O'Donnell's quite good too.

In James Harvey's latest book, he has lovely passages about Keaton's physical acting in the last interrogation scene with Pam Grier ("I sure hope you know what you're doing, Jackie").

'x movie is bad but Keaton is v good in' applies to a pretty significant chunk of his career tbh
