Hey iiijjj, you coming to Columbia this week?
― Tape Store, Monday, 2 July 2007 05:40 (eighteen years ago)
no I think it actually turns out I'm going with my wife down to her dad's place that day to do the BBQ and fireworks thing on his 40 acres down in the Ouachitas, but she was telling me about a Sonic Youth show at an Urban Outfitters in Lawrence she wanted to go to this summer, so we'll probably go to that and then Columbia the day before or after. I'll bump this thread and let you know before I do!
― iiiijjjj, Monday, 2 July 2007 06:06 (eighteen years ago)
kkkkkkkkkkkk
― Tape Store, Monday, 2 July 2007 06:07 (eighteen years ago)
I'm booking shows for a mini-tour a friend of mine is taking to celebrate his 21st. Where in town would you suggest I try to book for a young man with an acoustic guitar who enjoys very mild but not insignificant local fame in the St. Louis area?
― en i see kay, Monday, 2 July 2007 07:20 (eighteen years ago)
In Columbia, I mean.
― en i see kay, Monday, 2 July 2007 07:21 (eighteen years ago)
Hmm...Depends on his style of music (is it straightforward folky singer-songwriter stuff or more experimental?)
Best hipster options: Mojo's Eastside Tavern
Nice quirky venues: No Coast Ragtag Cinema Cafe Berlin
If you want a really odd venue (e.g. record store, basement), let me know...I have friends at most of the linked places, so if you're having trouble, let me know.
There's also The Blue Fugue, but they're shitty at marketing, so I won't link.
― Tape Store, Monday, 2 July 2007 07:36 (eighteen years ago)
He's very Tweedy-like, I guess, and big on entertaining as well as just playing the music (for example, he managed to plan and successfully execute a full-on Friars'-style roast of a friend of ours).
He's always happy just to play at open mic nights and stuff, but I'm trying to push him slightly more hipster-y, especially since he's starting to play with Fruity Loops and producing some pretty interesting stuff.
Most importantly, though, I think we're looking for a place we can book on relatively short notice, since the tour will start on July 26th or so. The No Coast looks promising.

― Mr. Que, Tuesday, 23 October 2007 13:43 (eighteen years ago)
I saw some good saddle creek shows @ the farm /emo Does that place still exist?
― bnw, Tuesday, 23 October 2007 14:17 (eighteen years ago)
(speaking of mo. shows, mountain goats are playing @ slu on 11/10 I think.)
― bnw, Tuesday, 23 October 2007 14:20 (eighteen years ago)
I've lived in Columbia for ten years but I've missed this thread. The Ranch does not have shows at all anymore. Tape Store, we should get some Booches burgers together.

― Pleasant Plains, Tuesday, 23 October 2007 16:21 (eighteen years ago)
Yes, the Heidelberg is bigger and has an upstairs (and a patio, too, I think, but I never eat there) but it looks basically the same and they are putting a patio/deck thing above a place called Quinton's that is on ninth st right across from the presb. church at Ninth and Locust.
― Trip Maker, Tuesday, 23 October 2007 16:25 (eighteen years ago)
Mountain Goats are playing at Mojo's, too.
― Trip Maker, Tuesday, 23 October 2007 16:26 (eighteen years ago)
Mojo's, which used to be called DEEP BLUES.
I saw polvo and thinking fellers at mojo's back in the day
― dmr, Tuesday, 23 October 2007 16:28 (eighteen years ago)
moi aussi. i think that was the only good show i saw there.
― Mr. Que, Tuesday, 23 October 2007 16:31 (eighteen years ago)
Shows are few and far between now, it seems. These MU Tigers just aren't interested in rocking out. Lawrence KS does much better in that department.
― Trip Maker, Tuesday, 23 October 2007 16:38 (eighteen years ago)
may have been the only show I saw there, can't think of any others
what was that place below street level where brainiac played for kcou birthday party
I have a tape of that show somewhere
wonder if salt of the earth is still open ....
xpost - really? bummer.
― dmr, Tuesday, 23 October 2007 16:39 (eighteen years ago)
yep--i thought of that after i posted it, only show i ever saw there back in the day.
i went back a few years ago and saw bald eagl3 and w@rhammer play there though.
The Basement? lol. I think I saw Tsun@mi play there.
Salt of the Earth is closed, right? There's only Whizz and Slackers left?
― Mr. Que, Tuesday, 23 October 2007 16:42 (eighteen years ago)
Salt is CLOSED but Eddie can be seen around. The below the street place you are thinking of was The Down Under Bar, affectionately nicknamed The Brown Underwear by a few of its regulars. That location is now home to the Sapphire Lounge martini bar.
― Trip Maker, Tuesday, 23 October 2007 16:45 (eighteen years ago)
yeah I kinda thought it closed
I went to whizz once after it moved but that was yeaaaaars ago
haven't been to columbia in a long time
ahaha yeah down under, that was it
― dmr, Tuesday, 23 October 2007 16:46 (eighteen years ago)
Oh and Whizz is a pale shadow of its former self. The guy who built it sold it and moved years ago. The next owner did a fairly good job of going absolutely nowhere with it. He sold it to some guys this year that have renamed it "Happy Times Media" and have absolutely no business owning a record store. Slackers has got some new guys (fellow KOPN DJ's) ordering vinyl and they are doing a good job. JT's in Jefferson City is my mid-MO record store of choice. Great bargains!
― Trip Maker, Tuesday, 23 October 2007 16:49 (eighteen years ago)
Whizz =============> Happy Times Media

― Mr. Que, Tuesday, 23 October 2007 16:51 (eighteen years ago)
happy times, wtf
sounds like a pizza shop w/ animatronic bears
The guy who built it sold it and moved years ago.
I think he opened a new whizz in NC. he had a booth at the WFMU record fair a couple years ago, I bought some stuff off him
― dmr, Tuesday, 23 October 2007 16:56 (eighteen years ago)
That was him, I'm sure.
― Trip Maker, Tuesday, 23 October 2007 16:59 (eighteen years ago)
He's in Asheville. I don't know if there's still a store, but he's got plenty of stuff up on eBay.

thanx dudes
yeah I figured I might be a little rusty so I took the option to tape in advance rather than do it live
I'm sure there's no unlimited do-overs but if I fuck up massive they'll take it out ( I hope)
― dmr, Tuesday, 23 October 2007 17:10 (eighteen years ago)
lol @ sock monkeys, I bet his wife makes those? they were selling homemade t-shirts and shoulder bags / purses at the record fair
― dmr, Tuesday, 23 October 2007 17:11 (eighteen years ago)
Is this Liz Phair really worth $50? Get out of here.
― Pleasant Plains, Tuesday, 23 October 2007 19:40 (eighteen years ago)
From what I remember, the guys at Whizz had a thing for Ms. Phair. Maybe that price reflects their...feelings for her.
― Trip Maker, Tuesday, 23 October 2007 19:45 (eighteen years ago)
Yeah, it wasn't too surprising to see Pavement, Phair, and Mercyland on the first page.
But look at me: I was looking for that double-vinyl Uncle Tupelo Still Feel Gone/March 16-20 that I picked up and put back in the rack 13 years ago. I can't talk.

btw are you guys talking about a record store?
whizz recs used to be good when it was farther up on 9th
― dmr, Tuesday, 23 October 2007 20:04 (eighteen years ago)
Whizz used to be a good record store in town. It was at 23 N Tenth st downtown, the current home of Ragtag Cinemacafe (which is itself preparing a move to the old Kelly Press building on Hitt St.) Apop Records was a great indie shop that was on Locust St but they moved to St Louis. It was all indie/psych/noise. They had some great instore performances. There was once a plan for Apop to move to Ragtag's 23 n tenth st address once they moved, but now that they are in St Louis, I can't really imagine that happening. But they say that they are still planning on opening a shop there.
― Trip Maker, Tuesday, 23 October 2007 20:05 (eighteen years ago)
hahaha i still have my pr0zac 7 inches
― Mr. Que, Tuesday, 23 October 2007 20:07 (eighteen years ago)
basically all we have now is slackers (evil chain masquerading as an indie, tried to buy no age like a month back and they told me they didn't ahve but could order it, which is funny because i also own a comptuer), streetside (nice dudes, awesome rap/mixtape section but way too $$$), this place across from the blue note called kevin's world that has cheap vinyl but for CDs it's still way too expensive. i usually resort to copping cds at best buy cause they sell everything for $9.99.
unless of course i don't know of something awesome. maybe tape store can help me out.
― J0rdan S., Tuesday, 23 October 2007 20:12 (eighteen years ago)
no, you're right, that's all there is. If you have a record player(and a car), you should check out JT's in Jeff City. Super cheap used vinyl. You have to dig, though. I get a discount on the new vinyl at Slackers. $$$ It pays to have friends. But you are better off getting something like No Age on you're own, its true. Kevin of Kevin's World used to manage Streetside.
― Trip Maker, Tuesday, 23 October 2007 20:15 (eighteen years ago)
I used to give demonstrations of the iMachine or whatever it was called at Streetside Records. You'd scan the UPC over the laser and you could listen to :30 samples of the songs! And see album art!
I also still have my prozac 7"s
― Pleasant Plains, Tuesday, 23 October 2007 20:29 (eighteen years ago)
There's a Walgreens now at Broadway and Providence, where Streetside used to be. Streetside is next to Southside Liquors, across from the Chamber of Commerce (kinda) by the Taco Bell at Providence and Green Meadowns. Just thought you should know in case you do ever come back for a visit and find yourself disoriented.
― Trip Maker, Tuesday, 23 October 2007 20:42 (eighteen years ago)
Hell, I was disoriented when I lived there. What else would be new?
Does Columbia still brag about the fact that the only escalator in town is at Dillard's in the mall?
Does Stadium still dead-end at Highway 63?
― Pleasant Plains, Tuesday, 23 October 2007 20:44 (eighteen years ago)
the Taco Bell at Providence ^^^^^^^^^^
― J0rdan S., Tuesday, 23 October 2007 20:44 (eighteen years ago)
stadium connects to highway 63 now.
― J0rdan S., Tuesday, 23 October 2007 20:47 (eighteen years ago)
tape store, u work at maude?
― J0rdan S., Tuesday, 23 October 2007 20:49 (eighteen years ago)
Yes, there are TWO Taco Bell's on Providence. The removal of the awnings, as mentioned upthread, is the biggest visual change, I'd say. You can't smoke indoors anymore. That really pissed of the crowd at Booches. There's a few more giant parking structures on campus than there used to be. Some new dorms, too, and a walkway over College Ave just south of Rollins that didn't used to be there. And the Mizzou (what was once briefly the Paige Sports) Arena (still never been there) and some other new BS on campus (new business school, a Monsanto built Agri-school or some shit, oh and TIGER SPOT (I don't care what that article says, the thing is a huge source of embarrasment. I see the thing everyday since I work at the library, it's kept covered with a tarp, ferchrissakes)
― Trip Maker, Tuesday, 23 October 2007 20:54 (eighteen years ago)
the new tarp looks half-decent i think. they should just get rid of the damn thing and replace it w/ bricks.
― J0rdan S., Tuesday, 23 October 2007 20:56 (eighteen years ago)
that tiger spot ruined my favorite place on campus
― Mr. Que, Tuesday, 23 October 2007 20:57 (eighteen years ago)
Oh yeah, there's no place on campus that sells cigarettes, either. The non-MU affiliated bookstore closed a year or two after I got here. MU changed from Coke to Pepsi, too, but Coke got to keep their vending machines on campus. All the Campus Dining Services establishments proudly serve Pepsi now.

― Mr. Que, Friday, 22 February 2008 20:08 (seventeen years ago)
Damn, I miss Columbia. Nowadays I can only afford to leave town (Ithaca, NY for now) about twice a year, and then I usually have to stay in St. Louis for the majority of the time to see the parents.
I worked at Slackers for a few years. Even with the addition of the KOPN crew (Jacob et al), the problem with ordering cool stuff was always that you had to OK it with the manager, who when I worked there would always hate on virtually everything that he didn't like himself, or that didn't have a British singer in his early 30s singing. Neu, Nico, Can, whatever - it was all relentlessly made fun of. Now that guy's gone, so I'm sure the workers have a little more freedom to suggest cool stuff. Still, the problem with a store like that is that they'll get the best used vinyl and cds, because anyone who had it would take it to another, better store.
― Z S, Friday, 22 February 2008 21:15 (seventeen years ago)
that they'll never get the best used blablabla, I meant.

Man, didn't see this thread til now. Haven't been in Columbia for a looooong time (got my J degree in '82!), but I definitely remember Whizz (back in its true glory days I'm guessing), Shakespeare's, the Blue Note. So does KCOU still exist? What about the maneater (first place I wrote record reviews)? Or was that long before everybody here's time?
― xhuxk, Friday, 27 June 2008 03:22 (seventeen years ago)
Whoa! You went to Mizzou?! All those things still exist. KCOU ran (/still runs?) on the tapes of this cool/nice guy named jason cafer, who graduated forever ago and likes/d indie rock and other hipster favorites. Maneater is also around; J0rdan writes for it, actually! Did you ever work at the Missourian? It's going through some financial struggles. The centennial celeb. is this fall.
― Tape Store, Friday, 27 June 2008 03:30 (seventeen years ago)
Yeah, wrote for the Missourian for two years too; even won a feature-writing award there at one point. Putting together a best-of book now with at least one Missourian piece (possibly the first hip-hop piece ever published in the paper, about a local rapper named DJ Romancer, with the amazingly Onion-like headline Rhymed Funk Hits Area), and also with a maneater piece I wrote about literally being pulled off the air in 1981 for playing music by Grandmaster Flash and Prince (which were considered "too disco" at the time.) I need to get some recent issues and check them out...Also need to head back there sometime. It's been forever.
― xhuxk, Friday, 27 June 2008 03:40 (seventeen years ago)
Biggest (or at least most ubiquitous) local bands when I was there, btw, were probably Fool's Face, the Banastre Tarelton Band (no idea if I got that spelling right), and maybe Morrels (think that was pre-Skeletons era; could never keep that chronology right.) Shakin' Street were maybe, uh, Kansas City? Head East did a song called "Jefftown Creek" in the late '70s (as in Jefferson City); it rocked.
― xhuxk, Friday, 27 June 2008 03:44 (seventeen years ago)
I just got a comp from the Banastre Tarelton Band in my mailbox and was kinda stunned with the professional packaging. Most insane bio ever (goes on and on about being played as backing music for some NBC affiliate in Pick-a-name, Texas. Had no idea they were actually big here. Was East Ash around? See: http://cdbaby.com/cd/40ibfcmusa
― Tape Store, Friday, 27 June 2008 03:47 (seventeen years ago)
I work in Jefferson City one day a week. Not really relevant to convo, i realize.

― xhuxk, Friday, 27 June 2008 03:50 (seventeen years ago)
Fuck, awesome "influences" list, too! I need the publicity contact for that compilation, I guess!
The Kinks, Black Sabbath, Atomic Rooster, Sensational Alex Harvey Band, Mott The Hoople, Ian Hunter, Rolling Stones, Blue Oyster Cult, KISS, Procol Harum, REM, The Romantics, Pete Droge, Bang, Dave Clark 5, Crack The Sky, Deep Purple, The Babys, Uriah Heep, Beatles, Steppenwolf, Yardbirds, Animals, Johnny Cash, etc.
― xhuxk, Friday, 27 June 2008 03:52 (seventeen years ago)
(Just got the contact from their website, actually, and emailed them. I need to hear that thing now. Don't even think I liked them much back then; weird!)
― xhuxk, Friday, 27 June 2008 03:58 (seventeen years ago)
Don't think I ever heard of East Ash, though. And most (if not all) of the bands on that CDbaby anthology were way after my time there...
― xhuxk, Friday, 27 June 2008 04:00 (seventeen years ago)
Actually (also by the way), I've long been under the impression that Sheryl Crow and I graduated the same year (1982), but I have no idea at this point where I might have got that impression. Maybe it's true (assuming she graduated) or maybe I just dreamed it. (Oh...Wikipedia says she got a "BA degree in Music Composition, Performance and Education," but also says she was born in '62, which would likely put her a couple years behind me unless she skipped grades. Likely we were both there at the same time, though. Not sure if I ever saw her band Cashmere or not; they sound kinda familiar, but who the hell knows.)
― xhuxk, Friday, 27 June 2008 04:06 (seventeen years ago)
Yeah, just started listening to the comp...It's called Huzzah! and has the longest bio i've ever seen for a local band.

"On February 21 BTB opened up for Bachman-Turner Overdrive in Quincy, Illinois at the Casino. In June they did a series of "dance cruises" at the Lake of the Ozarks on the Tom Sawyer party boat and literally took over Missouri's vacation paradise. The word spread after that and there were long lines waiting to get into to see the color ful quintet at clubs like Kitty Hawk, Goodtime Charlie's, Foxy's and the Lake Club Cafe. As their popularity skyrocketed, so did egos and there were numerous clashes over the kind of petty stuff that can destroy a band's chemistry."

Oh you aren't the only one. It's not much of a story. Something I thought was going to be good turned out to be completely half-assed and this 19 year old girl who was with no less than four dudes wearing identical polo shirts asked me what night was a good night at Eastside. She was unsatisfied with the bar scene in this town, she wondered where was a better place to go. I just shook my head and said that I don't go out much, which is the sad truth. Just really underscored the lack of a decent bar/club in this town, with the added "omg I'm old" vibe. No way that girl was 21, niether were her "Chad" compatriots. I guess that's why they didn't stick around for a drink. Or it could have been the conceptual poetry jam happening on stage. I guess it is a little bit of a story.

I don't think I've been to Columbia in 10 years
last time I was in St. Louis a friend who still lives in CoMo was complaining that KCOU sucks now and is constantly playing canned tapes of old shows :<
― dmr, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 17:16 (seventeen years ago)
I want Mahjongg!
you know a bunch of those guys went to Mizzou right
probably not too tough to get Mahjonng to play
― dmr, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 17:18 (seventeen years ago)
Yeah, that's true. I offered them some new mixes, so they could at least be playing canned tapes of new music. KOPN has become a lot more vital. Downtown is weird. A lot of empty storefronts, a lot of shitty college bars, and then there's Ragtag, the cultural center of town. They've got a great bar now and the local bakery is in the same building. Ninth St Video is in there, too. It's all in the old Kelly Press building on Hitt St, next to the church where the Chez was (the church is under construction and has been for the better part of a year). Ragtag is like a beacon in this town. You can't go there every night, though. I was considering getting a job there on weekends, just for the perks (discounts on bakery food and at the bar, free rentals from ninth st). But the idea of spending my weekends selling tickets and cleaning the bathrooms and the theatres turns me off. xpost they were here in like april or may, I think.
― Trip Maker, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 17:23 (seventeen years ago)
Oh and the lack of there being an even halfway decent venue means that there are practically no shows.
― Trip Maker, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 17:26 (seventeen years ago)
KCOU ran (/still runs?) on the tapes of this cool/nice guy named jason cafer, who graduated forever ago
just saw this up above, how did that happen, that they just started playing tapes? were people just not interested in DJing on there? we used to get like 80 applications a semester.
― dmr, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 17:32 (seventeen years ago)
they have lots of sports talk shows now
― J0rdan S., Tuesday, 19 August 2008 17:33 (seventeen years ago)
that's cool about Ragtag, at the tail end of when I was around they were starting a film series but just rotated from venue to venue
the rest of all this is a fuckin bummer tho!
xpost - oh yeah my friend mentioned that too. she's not into sports that much

idk about the relative merits of the sports shows, though i did let my ex-roommate "interview" me for his show, i just know ppl have been bitching about it
new ragtag is cool, though i've only been there once
i don't ever go out to bars here, though i think it's a mixture of the bars there sucking/me not enjoying going to bars really
i thought it was generally accepted that nightlife in columbia was awful, but ppl seem to really like the awful dance clubs!

Student interest in college radio has dropped off, at least around here. They are building a new Brady Commons and there is going to be an all new KCOU studio in there. Jason Cafer and I had back to back shows for years. I'm not sure if his benevolence was a positive or negative for KCOU. Once he brought his stacks of cd's into the station, dj's stopped showing up for their shifts.

Hoo boy. That is sad. I really loved that place, but it's probably nothing like it was when I was doing my 2-6 am shifts.

Well, they are really putting up a fight. All over campus today, it's all people are talking about. When no one cares anymore, that's when MSA will take our funding away. Back in your day, KCOU was owned by the Residence Hall Association. Now that they are owned by the Missouri Students Association, the budget is bigger, but there are more opportunities for whoever the MSA president is to decide that students aren't getting their money's worth by keeping KCOU open. It makes me happy to see that so many people are stepping up for kcou right now

My sister lived on campus near the two smokestacks and it always looked nicely eerie walking back from Mojo's. ^^^ right outside my window, those smokestacks...staring at them now.
Oh, and for bookkeeping purposes, i wanted to note that Columbia held the Citizen Jane Film Fest a few weeks ago. It was a Stephens-thrown festival celebrating female directors. I really enjoyed it! Saw Frozen River, Trouble the Water, Order of Myths...The co-star of the FR was here and the directors of the last two came as well...Order of Myths was followed by a really nice and surprisingly enlightening discussion about race...Who would have guessed?! I also attended a panel about female filmmaking; this one woman came up to me at another screening and asked me what it was like to be the only man, if i was intimidated...I then pointed out that I couldn't think of three female filmmakers who had directed five fantastic films; she couldn't either. LOLLLLLLLLLLL

When RHA shut down KCOU in '93, a DJ (who had just joined the staff) balanced a cinderblock on top of the door leading out of the hallway. When the RHA prez opened it on his way out, cinderblock fell off the door and came crashing onto the floor in front of him.
A pail of water might have been a safer way of conveying the message. But fuck the RHA.

no, the one on the left
cinder block thing, PP can probably tell it better but there was this strange "takeover" where outside people were brought in to make the station more "professional" and corporate ..... a bunch of the old regime quit in protest and someone rigged up a cinder block above a door that fell when one of the new people opened the door. to some people that incident was "joeks bruv" and to others it was "possible attempted murder"
haha xpost
― dmr, Wednesday, 19 November 2008 19:43 (seventeen years ago)
RHA shut down KCOU for some financial bs.Cinderblock happened. Entire staff fired.KCOU stays dark for awhile.RHA gets a new wild and crazy PD to overhaul KCOU.KCOU becomes "The Zone" and starts playing "Born to be Wild"Somewhere along the line, "The Zone" is deemed a failure.KCOU returns to old format.
^^ Most of this happens within the span of like six months.

lol, from my quarter-assed tribune capsule: Though the Ch1cago band is best known for its 1nescapable ballad “Hey There D3lilah,” its typical sound is quite a bit m0re energetic, with shimm3ry pop guitars that recall the d4ys of All-American Rejects.

M4tt L33
he did an experimental/ambient/krautrock type show and had a pretty sick record collection iirc

I remember Matt, too. He's a swell guy. Some of the execs during my tenure formed something called the "cinderblock society" that was meant to be a promo team or something. Mostly we just got drunk and made up stupid code names for each other. I can't even remember mine.

I hastily arranged a show for Jerusalem/Heater two nights ago. Unfortunately,
1) There wasn't much time to find a venue and advertise, maybe 2 days.2) People in Ithaca are really fucking lame3) I have very few friends here, so there was no posse to gather up4) It was a snowy Monday night and most people in town are in the middle of late November college hell.
2 people showed up (thank you, stranger named Richard, seriously). I felt horrible for Jerusalem and Heater. Epic failure on my part.

It wasn't the Zone -- it was THE EDGE!
Here are some more details about the bizarre shutdown of University of Missouri campus station KCOU, from the Columbia (Mo.) Daily Tribune, 10-6-93: Two weeks ago, a booby trap at MU student radio station clattered to the floor, startling Residence Halls Association president Dave Cohen, who had shut the station down pending a financial investigation. Cohen was not hurt by the cinder block that fell from a perch above the door, but last night the brick boomeranged when the student congress, owners of the station, fired KCOU's entire staff. The congress officially cited financial mismanagement, but distraught station workers said today the booby trap was the underlying reason for the mass firing. "The cinder block caused it all to happen," said program director Jeff Boock. "We would have been on the air right away if it wasn't for that." A student worker for the station confessed last week to setting the trap and was fired by KCOU. He says since denied involvement to university police, who are still investigating the incident. . . . The decision took KCOU staffers by surprise, Boock said. "I was appalled, amazed," he said. "I couldn't believe they had such gall. It was ridiculous." The radio station and its owner have had "bad blood" for a long time, said Mike Mulvihill, a KCOU disc jockey and former general manager. "It's like dealing with a big, uncaring boss who just didn't" understand how to run a radio station, he said. [Editorial comment: Welcome to the real world, Mike!] The station was shut down by Cohen Sept. 20 for financial problems stemming from a loss of $2,000 to $3,000 at a spring music festival and a pending FCC fine for improper recordkeeping. [Another editorial note: the station was still off the air as recently as October 24; the last time I was in Columbia.]

BEFORE the scandal.
― •--• --- --- •--• (Pleasant Plains), Monday, 27 April 2009 21:00 (sixteen years ago)
I rented from REMI for three years, my whole undergrad career after moving out of the dorms. They aren't exactly great. They don't really give a shit about anything. So, that is a positive from some perspectives and a negative from others. I think I got fifty dollars more than I put down on my security deposit when I moved out, so that was kind of cool.
― Trip Maker, Monday, 27 April 2009 21:04 (sixteen years ago)
last weekend my friend who lives in the slums had a window break during a party and remi got right on that shit - i think they've gotten better lately, like they put dishwashers into all the apts in the slums a year or two ago
― GOON carter cash (J0rdan S.), Monday, 27 April 2009 21:07 (sixteen years ago)
Sounds good. It's been like eight years since I rented from them, I believe that they have gotten better. I think that those J-Slums apartments are probably high on their priorities, considering the history (the above mentioned carbon monoxide scandal, a student living there died)
― Trip Maker, Monday, 27 April 2009 21:20 (sixteen years ago)
last weekend my friend who lives in the slums had a window break during a party and remi got right on that shit

Our landlord was Gary Pfau, who was a bit intense about not giving back security deposits. A bit intense all over the place. Just did a GIS for him and he looks completely unaged, playing baseball in Jeff City.
The only reason I mention him is for the in-joke my roommates and I had of any time something would break or a gust of wind would blow through the closed windows, going "Wicked, wicked PFAU."

― we hug you (Tape Store), Friday, 29 May 2009 18:03 (sixteen years ago)
I think I will flit between Sparkys and the Blue Fugue. Reunion acts can be pretty depressing, especially at the most depressing hole in Columbia (Blue Fugue used to be the Music Cafe, all that's changed is the name). I have only seen the first thirty minutes of Trapped in the Closet and I'm genuinely curious (lol) about the rest of the video. I have a feeling the only Gonn song I'm gonna want to hear is "Blackout of Gretely" but I may be presently surprised by that.
Have you ever been to any other "Videology" events, Chris? Guessing that this rooftop dance party will be exactly the same as all of those.

This Friday, May 29th at Cafe Berlin will be an amazing jam out extraveganza. Hailing all the way from the middle of fucking nowhere Kansas isRUBBISH!!!Amazing artist who uses junk and, well, rubbish to make a cacaphony of mind splitting sounds.
ALSO: I'm planning to show some old home videos I found of this family from the 60s that's pretty damn cool.
The local instigators that will be offering up a nice variety of sounds for the rest of the show are:
Lonesome Pine
Jon Sheffield and the Majestic Candle
Please Men Plea Semen
Sigulda
SPREAD THE WORD!!!
Please bring some donatin' money, to get Rubbish back to Kansas after the show otherwise he'll stick around and make our lives miserable! He'll also have merch for sale including some mysterious objects he described as "anti records." Don't know what these are? Come and find out. Show @ 9pm SHARP!

Wow, I was doing a google search to check up on the d-bag politician father of someone I knew in high school (in Farmington, MO), and came across a bunch of stuff that Kevin Engl3r said recently. Engl3r is the Senate Floor Majority leader in Missouri, a Republican. He's also the former mayor of Farmington, and I used to go over to his house occasionally to drink vodka and play Grand Theft Auto III with his son, who was also kind of d-bag.
Anyways, I guess he introduced a bill to give the death penalty to people who litter, then withdrew the bill, saying he was joking. Which is kind of stupid, but whatever. Then he said
"These dumb rednecks I got in my district throw it in the back of the truck and expect it not to blow out," Engler said.
Oops! He also called litterers in Farmington "white trash". Oops! Then he defended himself by saying that people of all races can be white trash, and that he wanted people to wonder if they were being white trash before they littered.
Way to go Farmington and Missouri!

Sorry it took forever to respond, I've been camping/driving across the country for the last few days. Awesome to run into you Sean - we did end up making it to Ragtag in the end, where I ran into el Tape Store (cool surprise!).
What happened at ragtag was really fucking weird. We were sitting outside, and then some dude busts out an acoustic guitar and starts singing. At first I thought he was being all "guy in the corner of a party with acoustic guitar", but then he started singing really loudly (Jason Mraz/John Mayer style, sorta), and then an ACCORDION comes in. And all of this is super-fake impromptu, like "Oh, do you have an accordion? well join on in!", only the accordion player magically knows the song already and everything is arranged. 10 minutes later, a dude with a giant stand-up bass walks in and pulls the same move ("Oh, mind if I set up, lemme see I think I know how this song would go, and-a-one and-a-BOOoooosh"). It was absolutely terrible, like a small-scale version of getting flash-mobbed by three douchebags. We moved inside, but the last time I glanced out there on the patio there was a big spotlight on Jason Mraz. Weird.

So great being back in Columbia, though!
^That's ridiculous and just irritating. My on-air tribute to Tuli Kupferberg was fun. I should have invited you by the station! Have you ever stopped by KOPN? Its a pretty heavenly place for a music nerd. Hope your trip went well. Just wrapped up my real summer fun with a trip to Chicago for the C00per Cr41n curated Bitchpork festival (w special surprise guest Lightning Bolt!). I also got to see Cave play at one pm at the Pitchfork festival, reconfirm my distaste for large outdoor music festivals, then promptly hit the road back to MO. It was a gorgeous day for a drive.

Thanks for this thread! I might have move to Columbia for work next year and was feeling pretty apprehensive about it, but maybe it'll be kind of cool (or at least okay?)

Oh man, a google maps street view tour is not inspiring confidence, housing-wise. AFAICT shotgun shacks in the inner "bad" parts give way directly to treeless suburban-style dystopia in the "good" parts. Is there any part of town that isn't like this? Where's the best place to live (for a 3-person fam)?

wtf was i talking about the other day?

not like i have an idea in hell of where a three person family is supposed to live
i always thought the burbs seemed nice
iirc, there's a nice, quiet neighborhood in the blocks west of Providence, between Broadway and Business Loop 70. Still really close to the downtown stuff, not so suburby.

Also lots of good places in East Campus, if you don't mind hearing the occasional drunken "woooos" at night.

man, i miss columbia.
yeah, a friend of mine used to babysit for a couple w/ a small child and i'm pretty sure they lived east... maybe a bit east of east campus but before the highway
anyway you can def find nice places in east campus if you don't mind mild stuff like that

I haven't been up there since 2000. Weird to think how little time of my life I actually spent there. Gotta say though, I did cram a lot of doing things into that short window.
Sometimes I get a little second-homesick and do what I did tonight, cruise up and down Ninth Street with Google Street View. They've got my old street near Paquin Towers on there now, so I saw that house for the first time in awhile.
I don't know where I'm going with this. I see that alley and that house and that house, and oh jesus that house and... and after awhile, I don't feel like driving seven hours up there for a weekend anymore.
That feeling won't last forever though. Just for now.

The most Columbia thing to happen this weekend was when I saw in front of the columns the Marching Mizzou band pay tribute to the solar eclipse by performing "Soak Up the Sun" by Sheryl Crow.
