Black Licorice - C/D

Probably the most divisive flavor of them all. The majority hates black licorice with a singular passion, but those of us who are right and pure and good of heart adore it without qualification. I have been known to enjoy not just twists and jellybeans but gum, altoids, spools, and even the watered down Good'n'Plenty variety. Someday soon, I will invest in some Ouzo or Arrak to see if it is as they say.

In conclusion: FUCK ALL HATAZ.

Oilyrags, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 00:31 (eighteen years ago)

classic, good with cigarettes

strgn, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 00:33 (eighteen years ago)

I don't do cigarettes, but I savor the occassional cigar. Do you think it would be close enough?

Oilyrags, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 00:36 (eighteen years ago)

fuckin' dud

kingfish, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 00:38 (eighteen years ago)

I like to buy fresh black liquorice - 'black' - and leave it in an unlidded wooden box for a year or so until it's so dry and hard it makes me feel like a sailor.

I'm still too much of a landlubber for salted liquorice though, particularly the dreaded 'double-salted'. Is there not a 'triple-salted' as well? Is salted liquorice just a North American thing?

Huey in Melbourne, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 00:39 (eighteen years ago)

I had the idea it was a scandanavian thing. Tuomas?

Oilyrags, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 00:41 (eighteen years ago)

OH BLACK LICORICE!!! Panda brand! Ouzo! Sambuca!

What are the licorice Altoids like? I've only just started seeing them around.

Jaq, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 00:41 (eighteen years ago)

sooo classic. that cherry shit tastes too waxy!

tehresa, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 00:41 (eighteen years ago)

> What are the licorice Altoids like?

They dissolve a little too fast, but are suitably intensely flavored.

Oilyrags, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 00:43 (eighteen years ago)

I love those woody licorice sticks that you can chew on. Haven't had one in years, though.

Beth Parker, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 00:43 (eighteen years ago)

WikiWarning: "Consumption of black liquorice may result in stool that is bright green in color".

Huey in Melbourne, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 00:45 (eighteen years ago)

oooh those are awesome. my little sis always seems to have an endless supply of them, but i keep forgetting to ask her where she gets them.

Amanda to thread!!!

Classic x100000000000000000000000000000000000000000

I bought this kind from a mail order company in the US and it's by far my favorite ever but of course, it's not available anymore and I don't know where else to get it. Panda is available everywhere around here so that's usually what I buy but there's some good stuff at Trader Joe's that I keep meaning to make a pilgrimage for.

Jenny, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 00:47 (eighteen years ago)

Probably you get the woody sticks at Health Food Stores. I hate to ASK those HFS clerks where things are, though—a weird phobia of mine—so consequently I do without a lot of healthy stuff.
I always used to get Good 'n' Plenties at the movies. I'd always suck the candy coating off, down to the lovely slimy licorice lozenges. Mmmm.

xpost. Duh. Slow typist.

Beth Parker, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 00:48 (eighteen years ago)

Jenny, those candies!!!!!!
I MUST HAVE THEM.

Beth Parker, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 00:49 (eighteen years ago)

Fuck, healthy licorice is such bullshit though.

But the nasty cheap stuff is classique

Drooone, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 00:53 (eighteen years ago)

I can take about ten Good 'n Plenty, but then I start to feel sick. Mostly dud.

Tape Store, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 01:31 (eighteen years ago)

Well, that's why I said "used to."
I don't eat any of that crap candy at the movies any more. I don't eat it at home—why should I eat it in the movie theater? Some Pavlovian thing? I AM MORE EVOLVED THAN THAT!!!!

Beth Parker, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 01:36 (eighteen years ago)

you assholes ruin jellybeans for everyone

max, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 01:43 (eighteen years ago)

Huh? Where did we say that jelly beans are bad? Huh? Huh? Where?
Okay, I said "crap candy." That doesn't mean that I don't like crap! I just stay away from it because of my WILL OF IRON.

Beth Parker, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 01:45 (eighteen years ago)

CLASSIC. I love black licorice! The best I've found has been in Germany and it's very good but very strong. Also great is licorice tea. Sounds strange but honestly, Yogi brand Egyptian Licorice Tea is amazing. If you like licorice, you have to try it.

ENBB, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 01:48 (eighteen years ago)

I love that tea! And it's just as soothing as Throat Coat if you have a sore throat.

Beth Parker, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 01:49 (eighteen years ago)

Yay! I knew I couldn't be the only one. Everyone thinks I'm odd when I tell them about it but it's one of those things you have to try to believe.

ENBB, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 01:52 (eighteen years ago)

I always use two teabags at a time for ultimate licoriceness.

Beth Parker, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 01:53 (eighteen years ago)

Me too!

ENBB, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 01:54 (eighteen years ago)

Black licorice is among the greatest flavors in the world. Not kidding.

John Justen, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 01:55 (eighteen years ago)

black licorice all the way in all forms
love it so much, always have
i mean, i even use anise toothpaste ('green beaver' hippie brand lol - but it works well! omg they should make anise-flavoured floss!!)

rrrobyn, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 02:08 (eighteen years ago)

Tom's of Maine used to have a great fennel toothpaste, but they must have changed the formula—now it has a funny taste.

Beth Parker, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 02:10 (eighteen years ago)

I've tired the TOM one and just couldn't get used to it. I think I'm just too conditioned to expect toothpaste = mint.

ENBB, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 02:11 (eighteen years ago)

green beaver is way better and doesn't have sls in it and also is called green beaver
(and is cdn obv)

rrrobyn, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 02:12 (eighteen years ago)

Fennel has become my new favorite vegetable - great chopped up fresh in a salad or steamed/sautéed. The licorice scent is great and the mild sweet flavor is subtle.

Jaq, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 02:17 (eighteen years ago)

In spaghetti sauce!

Beth Parker, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 02:19 (eighteen years ago)

beth i didnt mean you specifically, i meant all you assholes that like licorice

max, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 02:23 (eighteen years ago)

Beth, if you can find the Pontefract cakes anywhere, get them! And then get some for me.

Jesse got me some Chinese (I think) licorice for Christmas and it was hard and covered in salty red powder and man alive it was really, really not good.

Jenny, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 03:01 (eighteen years ago)

I don't trust people who dislike licorice.

Nicole, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 03:02 (eighteen years ago)

Gross. I like using things like star anise in cooking, though.

dan m, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 03:08 (eighteen years ago)

i used to hate it and avoid at all costs. but then a friend of mine who is obsessed with it made me try some... and we were stoned and ate the whole bag together. i felt disgustingly wonderful afterwords. now i am a fan.

the table is the table, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 03:23 (eighteen years ago)

my tin of licorice altoids is nearly empty, i foolishly kept giving them to people who would then spit them out and tell me off, i have wised up now but it is too late for that little tin, ask not for whom the bell tolls, it tolls for my licorice altoids.

estela, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 03:42 (eighteen years ago)

I LOVE all black licorice, even shit jeallybean flavor. Actually I tend to like the cheapier varieties---my very top favorite is RED VINES (brand) (aka American Licorice Company) black licorice. OH NUMS. Anise, ouzo, licorice tea! I like chewing on a plain old licorice root even though it puts big neon arrows around me saying RAISED BY HILLBILLIES.

Licorice root has a chemical 1000x sweeter than sugar!

Abbott, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 03:53 (eighteen years ago)

Some of my best memories are buying my first car & then drirving all around town with my left foot out the window & a big stick of licorice root in my mouth.

Abbott, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 03:54 (eighteen years ago)

well then i just love you.

estela, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 04:07 (eighteen years ago)

i just thought id let you all know that you disgust me

max, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 04:09 (eighteen years ago)

FWIW I really hate whipped toppings...?

Abbott, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 04:11 (eighteen years ago)

i like cool whip + nilla wafer sandwiches (eaten straightforwardly, i'm not one for any chewing up and resultant paste derring-dos)

estela, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 04:15 (eighteen years ago)

OH NO BACK TO THE SACRED YUM OF BLACK LICORICE.

Abbott, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 04:16 (eighteen years ago)

ok well lately all i want to eat at the movies is cheap milk chocolate-coated licorice bullets.

estela, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 04:20 (eighteen years ago)

cool whip is a tool of satan, does everyone realize cool whip is whipped corn syrup + water??? i mean i dont give a fuck about that kind of stuff usually but jesus REDIWHIP PEOPLE

deeznuts, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 04:21 (eighteen years ago)

estela, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 04:39 (eighteen years ago)

xanthan

estela, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 04:39 (eighteen years ago)

Salmiakki (Finnish) or salmiak (Danish), salmiakdrop ("salmiak liquorice", Dutch), salmiakk (Norwegian), salmiak or saltlakrits ("salty liquorice", Swedish) is a salty confectionery that is popular in The Netherlands, Northern Germany and the Nordic countries. Its main ingredients are liquorice root and ammonium chloride (NH4Cl.) which is also called salmiak or salmiakki.

AMMONIA candy. Wat a concept.

libcrypt, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 05:12 (eighteen years ago)

I think I spat out a piece of salt licorice faster than I had ever spat out a thing before. Foul, foul.

Regular black licorice is one of the best things ever, though. The Austrialian style is really good--Kookaburra is the brand I think? It's soft and intense. Ouzo is awesome--once had a shot of it on licorice gelatto!

hooray for licorice!

patita, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 14:38 (eighteen years ago)

i hate plain black licorice, but i like the salt-covered stuff because i'm a sodium addict. the candy is almost incidental.

the finnish jalapeno/black licorice vodka i tried was... interesting.

lauren, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 14:42 (eighteen years ago)

i thought cool whip and rediwhip and wahtever were more like *whipped petroleum* and water and sugar?

xanthan gum is fine with me. i will even rep for guar gum.

rrrobyn, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 15:01 (eighteen years ago)

I've never been a huge fan of black licorice but I am intrigued by this salted kind you speak of.

Ms Misery, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 15:02 (eighteen years ago)

salt licorice = snack of gods

the finnish jalapeno/black licorice vodka
Are you referring to the vodka's that's been infused with these babies:

baaderonixx, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 15:18 (eighteen years ago)

The love of all thnigs licorice, the saltier the better, is probably the main thing I got from my scandinvian heritage

baaderonixx, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 15:19 (eighteen years ago)

i guess so? i also had a home-brewed version of the stuff that was off the charts in terms of sodium content. mmm, salty liquor!

lauren, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 15:22 (eighteen years ago)

finnish salted black licorice is the bomb. i've had the kind that comes in a small red flip-top box, but i can't remember what it's called.

Pontefract Cakes, on sale, but not to me. :((((((((((((((

Can I order sweets if I am outside the UK?

Absolutely.

The shopping cart will work out everything for you - from UK VAT (where applicable), the shipping options and associated costs.

If your country is not listed just drop us an e-mail and we will add it.

The main exceptions to this are the USA and Canada which sadly we can not send to. The reason for this is that we send all of our products with product insurance, and we are unable to secure cover for shipments to the USA and Canada (much as we would love to). Unfortunately we can not make exceptions to this - we just can't risk sending products uninsured.

Jaq, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 16:20 (eighteen years ago)

I have the impression taht there is a correlation on the love/hate divide between licorice and cinnamon. Any opinion?

baaderonixx, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 16:40 (eighteen years ago)

yes, i hate people who don't love both.

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 16:50 (eighteen years ago)

cinammon in baked goods. cinammon in candy, not so much.

Ms Misery, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 16:51 (eighteen years ago)

I LOVE ALL CINNAMON AND BLACK LICORICE.

I think the only flavor I hate is 'bubblegum' flavired anything bcz 1. it is inherently cloying and gross and 2. it gives me pavlovian pain flashbacks to childhood dentist visits.

Abbott, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 20:08 (eighteen years ago)

I don't think I hate candy related anything except maybe candy corn.

Nicole, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 20:24 (eighteen years ago)

I hate black licorice twists, but black licroice flavoured things and/or phenyl flavoured things are A-OK in my book.

Will M., Tuesday, 24 April 2007 20:28 (eighteen years ago)

Candy corn, tootsie rolls, and really old, dusty circus peanuts on old people's coffee tables are the dredges of the candy world.

Abbott, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 20:30 (eighteen years ago)

I forgot circus peanuts, they are awful.

Nicole, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 20:31 (eighteen years ago)

EXACTLY.

I do, however, love candy corn. Circus peanuts are disgusting.

ENBB, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 20:32 (eighteen years ago)

I hate any fake-fruit flavored thing like sweet-tarts and that powder dip b/c of children's aspirin. blech.

Ms Misery, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 20:32 (eighteen years ago)

has anyone here ever endured FLUORIDE TREATMENT

they used to give me straight fluoride & made me swish it around for 30 secs (twice) but it was so disgusting i had to request the kiddie treatment (in cherry or bubblegum flavor)(i chose cherry) & the dental hygenist cunt laughed at me the first time i did

scared for life

deeznuts, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 20:33 (eighteen years ago)

fake-fruit flavors ON THE MONEY! I love cherries and watermelon. So why are cherry and watermelon candy so gross?

Oilyrags, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 20:34 (eighteen years ago)

Finnish black licorice vodka=salmiakki koskenkorva (if my Finnish doesn't fail me - Tuomas will tell me). This was banned for a while in Finland, but has made a serious comeback. When I lived there, friends always asked for bottles as gifts. Don't know how easy it is to get outside of Finland. I once received a bottle of Finnish salmiakki syrup, which you can use t make your own, or even use it for ice cream, etc. Amazing.

Actually, there's more here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salmiakki_Koskenkorva

Kippis!

deeznuts, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 20:34 (eighteen years ago)

They did that to us in SCHOOL once a week & they played the national anthem while we did it! It sure felt like brainwashing.

xpost abt flouride treatment

Abbott, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 20:34 (eighteen years ago)

I don't mind cherry or watermelon falvors but can't stomach anything fake grape, banana, or raspberry falvored. Blech

ENBB, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 20:35 (eighteen years ago)

Oh I love fake banana & grape flavors. I was really hankering for grape flavored candy/popsicle one day, but all I had was the real grapes of nature. SO not the same. I was disappointed.

Abbott, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 20:38 (eighteen years ago)

ONCE A WEEK????? holy shit. i literally almost couldnt stand it once a year. in fact wait i literally couldnt stand it once a year.

btw kiddie treatment = they paint yr teeth with that flavor paste. as long as you keep yr tongue under control you make it out ok.

deeznuts, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 20:38 (eighteen years ago)

That stuff made (& makes) me both gag & vomit...I would start crying & hyperventilating when the dentist brought it out, so I USUALLY could avoid it. How I hate thee, dentists of all my past.

Abbott, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 20:40 (eighteen years ago)

I love licorice chewsticks, salt licorice, and sweet licorice. However, I have these dutch double-salts in my desk right now that are flavoured with AMMONIUM CHLORIDE, and I'm not even kidding. Apparently these are very popular in Holland and the Scandinavian countries. What the fuck??? They taste like a urinal cake.

antexit, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 22:41 (eighteen years ago)

love black licorice but not crazy about cinnamon candies or gum.

tehresa, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 22:50 (eighteen years ago)

has anyone here ever endured FLUORIDE TREATMENT

holy geez, you kids let me tell you abt back in the day when fluoride was squeezed into a trays that fit over your teeth and you sat there for the longest 2-4 minutes in the world with a suction hose stuck between your plastic-foam-rimmed lips, sickly sweet ooze trickling down your throat, as you tried not to gag and failed.
every six to 12 months this happened! and the dentist would push the bubblegum and strawberry flavours until you discovered one day, that they actually had "flavourless" flavour, which while still gross was five thousand times better than what had been forced on you for so many of your formative years.

ugh
but i am glad they never had licorice flavour. that would've ruined licorice omg.

rrrobyn, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 22:58 (eighteen years ago)

yeah those trays were awful bc they were styrofoam so on top of the nasty gel there was the squek of styrofoam on your teeth.

tehresa, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 23:00 (eighteen years ago)

I am restraining myself from buying this 6.6 pound bag of pontefract cakes. Free shipping if I buy 2, but 13 pounds of licorice is a hell of a lot.

Jaq, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 23:01 (eighteen years ago)

I have been eating unusual(like, almost a pound every 10 days) amounts of licorice ever since I bought this:
http://www.mybrandsinc.com/ShopOnline/MfrLogo%5CImages%5CBrandLogos%5CDARR.jpg
I can't find a proper image, but I can assure you that it's the most divine (unsalted) licorice I've ever had.

Also lemme hear a round of applause for AGUARDIENTE. Mmmm.

La Lechera, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 23:14 (eighteen years ago)

Some people say lick-or-ice or lick-or-iss. I hold that it's lick-or-ish or lick-rish, the latter two seeming to me like the diff between Ed-in-burr-uh and Ed-in-bruh.

libcrypt, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 00:52 (eighteen years ago)

i say lick-er-ish but the er part is pretty fast, and the italics make it all even faster! racecar word

rrrobyn, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 01:19 (eighteen years ago)

I had to endure the liquid mouthwash flouride treatments too when I had braces. Had to swish it in my mouth for 5 minutes straight, every few weeks ugggh. I cannot smell or taste bubblegum anymore without gagging.

PS licorice is awful.

Trayce, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 07:10 (eighteen years ago)

Fluouride treatment was the bomb, what are you guys talking about?? My parents never let me have sweets so for me it was a big 2-4 minute sensory overload!! I looked forward to that shit!

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 11:23 (eighteen years ago)

The appeal of the pontefract cake overthrew all sense of reason and proportion and now 6.6 pounds of black lik'-rish are on their way to my house, balanced out by a book Mr. Jaq wanted (to get the free shipping and assuage my guilt (he hates licorice (more for me!))).

patita, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 21:42 (eighteen years ago)

Patita, it's a hell of a lot of licorice - overfills a 1 gallon ziplock freezer bag. Very molasses-y, not terribly sweet, chewy and addictive.

Jaq, Monday, 30 April 2007 00:15 (eighteen years ago)

Haha tracer, I had a friend in high school like that---no sweets, no movies, no rock music. He said his favorite part of the day was brushing his teeth for the rush of sweetness and yum.

ian, Friday, 28 November 2008 05:32 (seventeen years ago)

licorice is the best! my father always ate lots of it, definitely a scandinavian thing, i hated it when i was younger but totally changed my mind. my mom came to visit for thanksgiving & brought me a huge bag of black licorice candy from the amish market back home. i might have to order some of the salt licorice, haven't tried that yet.

T-PALIN (daria-g), Friday, 28 November 2008 07:07 (seventeen years ago)

haha yeah scandinavian genes coming through. I thank the invention of the internet every day for giving me the possibility to order salted licorcie and salmiak drops online. So delicious...

I had to send someone emergency supplies of Bassetts liquorice paddles this week. Ate one myself before packing them up and have had cravings for more ever since. Yes, good!

(Less sure about anise-flavoured boozes, generally find them kind of horrible on the first gulp and then kind of addictive. I really need to get me some salmiakki koskenkorva)

And speaking of black anise-y toothrotting goodness, what are the cornershops and newsagents of Great Britain coming to when I walked round SIX of them yesterday hunting for Blackjacks and couldn't find any?

a fresh bag of Darrell Lea licorice is my dream right now. Not the prepackaged kind. Used to come in a brown paper bag when I was a kid, and it was so soft, and looked like chocolate fudge in the middle when you bit into it...oh goddamn I would kill for that right now. Kookaburra and all those ones they sell here just don't cut it. Nice and all, but a bit plasticky.

and I would kill my nanna for some chocolate covered licorice bullets. haha no pun intended.

Classic! My oma started giving me licorice when I was very young. The first ones I remember were coin shaped, and brownish pipes. Licorice and Haribo was my childhood candies. I'm happy to see so many people here love this flavor as well, Almost everyone I know hates it with a passion.

salty licorice is the best candy in the world. staple here in scandinavia, when I grew up and realized salty licorice wasn't the most popular candy worldwide was like learning santa claus doesn't exist x 1000. I loved it from I was a little kid, never thought of it as unusual, strong or "bitter". just pleasant and delicious. also the saltier the better.

annoying in the way that all npr stories are annoying, but contains interesting information, like this:

the secret source of sweetness in licorice flavors: It's the aromatic compound anethole. (Well, OK, in tarragon it's anethole's close cousin, estragole.) Subtly but insistently, anethole weaves its sweet and haunting anise theme into the essential oils of plants

if the writer would stop talking about herself for 5 minutes it would be an interesting piece, but whatever

- eating weird Swedish sweets in the shape of sinisterly cheery cat-faces, two-thirds quite sweet black liquorice and one-third parma violet flavour, like eating liquorice with a light dusting of old lady perfume. Undecided on this combination.

(Made by Bubs Godis, who also do chilli + cherry liquorice, pear / liquorice bear heads, and raspberry / liquorice skulls. Oh hot damn they make colabottle+liquorice stars too, why did the shop not have those?)

- got a bottle of Finnish liquorice-flavoured vodka Salmiakki Koskenkorva hiding in my room too, not sure if this will be a Christmas present for someone else or if I'm going to drink it allll myself. Had it once before, unexpectedly drinkable and black as ink.

two years pass...

Reached the bottom of my bottle of Salmiakki Koskenkorva (see posts by guymauve and myself upthread) to find that after pouring a final shot there was about 3mm of thick black sludge absolutely welded to the bottom.

Poured a little unflavoured vodka in and gave it a shake to un-weld it. Such inky droplets.

Rest assured I have ordered a new bottle.

(In my previous post I wasn't sure whether to keep the previous bottle for myself or give it as a present. Well, I kept it for myself but opened it with the possible recipient and poured two shots. The look on his face on tasting it... just as well I didn't give him the whole bottle. ALL THE MORE FOR ME.)

These are my faves. I would love to try try some salty liquorice with the same hardness/texture of Basset's Bassetti though. Italian pure liquorice pellets are good, an extreme flavour, most people find them foul. Salmiak is great, too.

Vasco da Gama, Wednesday, 5 August 2015 13:52 (ten years ago)

my favourite italian pellets are actually not the pure ones but the ones with anise. I might use some to make this liquorice pudding, although I don't know if I will like liquorice + dairy.
