Salmiakki (Finnish) or salmiak (Danish), salmiakdrop ("salmiak liquorice", Dutch), salmiakk (Norwegian), salmiak or saltlakrits ("salty liquorice", Swedish) is a salty confectionery that is popular in The Netherlands, Northern Germany and the Nordic countries. Its main ingredients are liquorice root and ammonium chloride (NH4Cl.) which is also called salmiak or salmiakki.

Can I order sweets if I am outside the UK? Absolutely. The shopping cart will work out everything for you - from UK VAT (where applicable), the shipping options and associated costs. If your country is not listed just drop us an e-mail and we will add it. The main exceptions to this are the USA and Canada which sadly we can not send to. The reason for this is that we send all of our products with product insurance, and we are unable to secure cover for shipments to the USA and Canada (much as we would love to). Unfortunately we can not make exceptions to this - we just can't risk sending products uninsured.

black licorice is bomb.before just now when i read this thread, i didn't know that cinnamon-haters existed!
― ian, Friday, 28 November 2008 05:32 (seventeen years ago)
licorice is the best! my father always ate lots of it, definitely a scandinavian thing, i hated it when i was younger but totally changed my mind. my mom came to visit for thanksgiving & brought me a huge bag of black licorice candy from the amish market back home. i might have to order some of the salt licorice, haven't tried that yet.
― T-PALIN (daria-g), Friday, 28 November 2008 07:07 (seventeen years ago)
haha yeah scandinavian genes coming through. I thank the invention of the internet every day for giving me the possibility to order salted licorcie and salmiak drops online. So delicious...

Also I have been rabidly following this blogger's quest for the perfect licorice: http://liqs.blogspot.com/
― baaderonixx, Friday, 28 November 2008 08:33 (seventeen years ago)
Great blog, even if I'm not keen on the really salty stuff. Even Dutch coins were a bit too bitter for me and this guy says they're kind of tame...
I had to send someone emergency supplies of Bassetts liquorice paddles this week. Ate one myself before packing them up and have had cravings for more ever since. Yes, good!
(Less sure about anise-flavoured boozes, generally find them kind of horrible on the first gulp and then kind of addictive. I really need to get me some salmiakki koskenkorva)
And speaking of black anise-y toothrotting goodness, what are the cornershops and newsagents of Great Britain coming to when I walked round SIX of them yesterday hunting for Blackjacks and couldn't find any?

a fresh bag of Darrell Lea licorice is my dream right now. Not the prepackaged kind. Used to come in a brown paper bag when I was a kid, and it was so soft, and looked like chocolate fudge in the middle when you bit into it...oh goddamn I would kill for that right now. Kookaburra and all those ones they sell here just don't cut it. Nice and all, but a bit plasticky.
and I would kill my nanna for some chocolate covered licorice bullets. haha no pun intended.

Classic! My oma started giving me licorice when I was very young. The first ones I remember were coin shaped, and brownish pipes. Licorice and Haribo was my childhood candies. I'm happy to see so many people here love this flavor as well, Almost everyone I know hates it with a passion.

salty licorice is the best candy in the world. staple here in scandinavia, when I grew up and realized salty licorice wasn't the most popular candy worldwide was like learning santa claus doesn't exist x 1000. I loved it from I was a little kid, never thought of it as unusual, strong or "bitter". just pleasant and delicious. also the saltier the better.

annoying in the way that all npr stories are annoying, but contains interesting information, like this:
the secret source of sweetness in licorice flavors: It's the aromatic compound anethole. (Well, OK, in tarragon it's anethole's close cousin, estragole.) Subtly but insistently, anethole weaves its sweet and haunting anise theme into the essential oils of plants
if the writer would stop talking about herself for 5 minutes it would be an interesting piece, but whateveri will consume anything that is licorice-related, including this annoying article

Glad to see I already mentioned the joys of chewing on a licorice root while driving w/yr left foot hanging out of the car window.

Estela can you tell me more about your licorice iced tea? I have some amazing licorice tea but never thought to ice it. Is that what you've done? Just cold brewed some of the reg stuff?

had some strong black licorice lately
it was narcotic
― cozen, Tuesday, 10 August 2010 11:03 (fifteen years ago)
enbb, i made a pot of hot licorice tea (which i also love) but i only ended up drinking half of it so i chilled the rest and then poured it over ice and it was delicious and next summer i'm going to live on it.
― estela, Tuesday, 10 August 2010 14:13 (fifteen years ago)
you should try this.
I am going to try that.

Going to do this today. Will report back!

I am going to do this too, minus the "living on it" part. Lately I have been making various syrups with which to flavor my regular iced tea. Maybe I should try one with star anise? My star anise liqueur did not turn out well, though :(

- eating weird Swedish sweets in the shape of sinisterly cheery cat-faces, two-thirds quite sweet black liquorice and one-third parma violet flavour, like eating liquorice with a light dusting of old lady perfume. Undecided on this combination.
(Made by Bubs Godis, who also do chilli + cherry liquorice, pear / liquorice bear heads, and raspberry / liquorice skulls. Oh hot damn they make colabottle+liquorice stars too, why did the shop not have those?)
- got a bottle of Finnish liquorice-flavoured vodka Salmiakki Koskenkorva hiding in my room too, not sure if this will be a Christmas present for someone else or if I'm going to drink it allll myself. Had it once before, unexpectedly drinkable and black as ink.

Black licorice and parma violets are two of my most favorite things but I can't really see them working together? This sounds very strange.

has anyone tried these?

I'm a huge black licorice fan, but I think I've met my match with these. I can't even finish a single lozenge, they're so strong I have to spit them out! I've kept them at my desk because I'm determined that they will win me over eventually but holy fuckballs. Like, for a moment it tastes like mmm strong black licorice and then it ramps up to 'oh wow this kinda tastes like..dirt? hmm oh okay sump oil no wait it's like eating a battery aaaagggggh get it out get it out'

Never tried those, but this different brand (and shape) of Italian liquorice defeated us, so I'm suspicious of the Italian stuff now:http://www.rotolini.it/media/catalog/product/cache/1/image/9df78eab33525d08d6e5fb8d27136e95/D/O/DOLRDE593413.jpg

Reached the bottom of my bottle of Salmiakki Koskenkorva (see posts by guymauve and myself upthread) to find that after pouring a final shot there was about 3mm of thick black sludge absolutely welded to the bottom.
Poured a little unflavoured vodka in and gave it a shake to un-weld it. Such inky droplets.
Rest assured I have ordered a new bottle.
(In my previous post I wasn't sure whether to keep the previous bottle for myself or give it as a present. Well, I kept it for myself but opened it with the possible recipient and poured two shots. The look on his face on tasting it... just as well I didn't give him the whole bottle. ALL THE MORE FOR ME.)

These are my faves. I would love to try try some salty liquorice with the same hardness/texture of Basset's Bassetti though. Italian pure liquorice pellets are good, an extreme flavour, most people find them foul. Salmiak is great, too.
― Vasco da Gama, Wednesday, 5 August 2015 13:52 (ten years ago)
my favourite italian pellets are actually not the pure ones but the ones with anise. I might use some to make this liquorice pudding, although I don't know if I will like liquorice + dairy.
