Maria, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 21:14 (eighteen years ago)

Man, if Maria is graduating from college already, I've been on this board for too long.

I'm old and an undergrad! I count! Hussar!

I also get confused easily by Americaners calling university 'college'.

emil.y, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 21:32 (eighteen years ago)

Sup dudes.

Two semesters before I've got the degree, three before I've got the teaching certificate.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 21:47 (eighteen years ago)

I will be a student again in the fall. Hopefully.

milo z, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 21:48 (eighteen years ago)

In the last weeks of my junior year of film school, a dizzying combination of "motherfucker I have so much shit to do" and "wow, things that I have shot have come back from the lab and they actually resemble movies in some small way."

en i see kay, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 21:52 (eighteen years ago)

I'm a 3rd year Berkeley student...in class right now...I mostly only post on threads about Berkeley. Or Israeli politics. Next year I'll be at the Sciences Po, which I guess gives me even less reason to post.

iatee, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 22:04 (eighteen years ago)

finishing up first year at GA Tech

Curt1s Stephens, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 22:22 (eighteen years ago)

what does "college" mean to people in other countries? I mean there's a distinction between colleges and universities here but its always clear when someone says they go to "uni" what they mean

Curt1s Stephens, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 22:28 (eighteen years ago)

I have filed my dissertation but I do not officially complete my grad school sentence until May 13th, so . . . I am still in school.

Drew Daniel, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 22:32 (eighteen years ago)

i stopped being an undergrad nearly 4 years ago, until i became one AGAIN about a year ago.

ps no offense to you dudes but undergrads are totally fucking irritating and i want to shoot most of them

moonship journey to baja, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 22:36 (eighteen years ago)

i dropped out one semester off of graduation this year but i think i'm dropping back sometime in the next academic yr

A B C, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 22:36 (eighteen years ago)

I am in college and here is my EIPC HISTORY

2001-03 (3 total semesters)
Idaho State University while living w/my parents, leaving LDS church, working full time at a county newspaper doing everything but the legal notices & some of the reporting, then later full-time as one of two employees at an insaniac local graphic-design copy joint.

Courses: the hellish hoopla of GENERALS w/one esp. awesome astronomy class and nothing else of note.

2003-06 (6 semesters)
Boise State University. Jobs during my tenure include, at various times w/some overlap: calling to set up time share appointments, calling to set up vacuum sales appointments, working graveyard at donut shop as delivery person AND baker and janitor, bussing tables, waitressing at shit diner, making milkshakes at some other shit diner (position called "milkshake bitch"), Hastings: Your Entertainment Superstore as music dept. manager (inordinately thankless), and KINKO's as it transitioned to FedEx Kinko's aka slow descent into hells.

CLASSES: I thought I wanted to be a junior high/high school English teacher; so a lot of lit, linguistics & (insultingly terrible) education courses. Also some really stupid courses I thought would be fun but were not. Had mental breakdown (got diagnosed w/bipolar) while taking 12-15 credits and continually working 40+ hours a week and having to move constantly. Ended up w/2.0 gpa or so, couldn't get financial aid bcz I failed over 70% of my classes (it was pretty much A's and F's on all my report cards). Lost workstudy job.

2006-2007
Dona Ana Community College
Attending New Mexico State Univ. offshoot while I wait a year to get instate tuition. SOMEHOW they have this thing @ NMSu where you get to keep all you past gredits but not yr GPA so I have a 4.0 now. Really pointless fucking classes where 50% of instructors usually treat you like you are a chronic gluesniffer.

2007-2009ish
NMSU---I have over 100 credits and 9 toward my new major (biology yay!). Two more years of ass-busting with NO job, plenty of sleep & food, I'll finally fucking graduate and then spend forever in post-indergrad hoohah.

Abbott, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 22:38 (eighteen years ago)

rw, I can change, I swear. ;_;

Curt1s Stephens, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 22:39 (eighteen years ago)

i think i'm mostly just irritated because (a) i'm in classes with, like, 18 yo rural montanan freshmen who are idiots and (b) am reminded by what i used to act like (in a bad way, but sometimes i wanna high five them) and (c) I AM AN ADULT

river wolf, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 22:40 (eighteen years ago)

i am going back to school in the fall and i can't wait. but it will be with adults, in a grad program, with evening classes, so not really like 'college'. i would never want to go back to undergrad, though.

tehresa, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 22:54 (eighteen years ago)

YEAH I KNOW

river wolf, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 22:56 (eighteen years ago)

river wolf, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 22:56 (eighteen years ago)

I'm in college! One more year and then GRAD SKOOL HOORAY.

jessie monster, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 22:57 (eighteen years ago)

river wolf, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 22:58 (eighteen years ago)

xxpost

tehresa, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 22:59 (eighteen years ago)

I transferred out of marymout manhattan to SVA. I'm been in college for 4 years and will be an undergrad for 2 more years. Kill me.

Andi Mags, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 23:00 (eighteen years ago)

ken c, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 23:17 (eighteen years ago)

cos the illolleracy rate on this site is staggering

ken c, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 23:20 (eighteen years ago)

rw i think the desire to murder undergrads is prevalent even among undergrads (im not going to make the virginia tech joke, but....)

i mean i hate like 95% of people on my campus. i go to a small school though.

max, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 23:23 (eighteen years ago)

lol college is like clown college, right?
xpost

G00blar, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 23:24 (eighteen years ago)

I think college is becoming more and more something you have to do, whether or not you are particularly interested in learning/your major, and I think that is kind of detrimental to the atmosphere. But then again it means people who care a little look really great and stand out so it's acceptable.

jessie monster, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 23:28 (eighteen years ago)

haha when i read that last sentence i thought you meant "look" as in like, they dress well. and i thought "otm."

max, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 23:29 (eighteen years ago)

dude there is definitely no shortage of people on my campus who spend a lot of time getting ready for class.

jessie monster, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 23:31 (eighteen years ago)

there are facebook groups that have observed this fact

max, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 23:33 (eighteen years ago)

Group Info Name: Are You a Model? No Wait, You're an Idiot Who Got Dressed Up To Go To Class
Type: Common Interest - Self-help
Description: I wasn't aware that lectures were the best place to get dates. I could have sworn that it was a big room full of 500 college students so tired and/or hungover that they can't stay awake, let alone notice how you perfectly gelled your hair and got the collar popped at just the right angle, or how shiny your new heels are and how they perfectly match your stupid $100 wool poncho made from real llama hair. If getting ready for class involves more than zipping up the jeans you slept in, putting on the stained sweatshirt that was on the floor, and putting on a hat to cover your greasy and unkempt hair, please move back to Abercrombie Land with all the beautiful people. Let us uglies wallow in our filth without interruption.

max, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 23:35 (eighteen years ago)

but you know my grandparents didnt learn anything at college, and im pretty sure my parents didnt learn anything except proper drug etiquette, so my feeling is that there have always been a lot of retards going to school.

i mean really what's detrimental to the atmosphere is that like 900% of all people everywhere are either retards or assholes. its just compounded at college cause you see the same retards and assholes day after day, and hear their retarded opinions on books.

max, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 23:37 (eighteen years ago)

and see them date-raping each other at parties and filming their retarded film projects and crusading for their retarded causes and throwing up in my washing machine and stuff

max, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 23:38 (eighteen years ago)

I go to a fairly large state school that pretty much does not reject anyone who applies, so I know all about scads of dummays lowering expectations. I graduate next year, with grad school being like 1000 years away (need money).

i've been taking classes here and there at Greenville Tech (a local community college). i stopped going this semester due to illness. i will most likely go back in the fall, but who knows. i'm not sure about anything in my life right now.

latebloomer, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 01:00 (eighteen years ago)

I hate my fellow undergrads a lot less when I take classes at night.

my undergrad history:
2000: fall semester, get accepted and registered a week after classes start. Go to first two classes, never go back to campus. GPA: 0.00
2001: spring semester, go to first four classes, never go back to campus. GPA: 0.00
2001: fall semester: please go away for six months letter from university
2002-6: quit drinking/drugs, take a couple of semesters off here and there, work GPA back into almost 3.0 territory, find classes I care about (art, history mostly) but are ultimately useless because being a 'working artist' sounds both miserable and impossible, realize that I don't have any burning passion to own my very own BA/BFA in English, History or Fine Arts (probable majors whenver I get around to declaring again) but if I don't graduate soon I never will and then I'm fucked forever.

milo z, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 01:19 (eighteen years ago)

i'm just finishing up my first "year" of a 2-year master's program. i'm old. i got my BA 9 years ago.

I'll have a pretty much useless degree in Creative Writing this Summa...

Colin_C., Wednesday, 25 April 2007 02:21 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah I think last time this was brought up somebody said "I don't think I want all my friends knowing how much time I spend on a message board" and everyone tended to agree.

Colin, we'll be broke with useless Creative Writing degrees together! xpost

elan, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 02:34 (eighteen years ago)

Being a Creative Writing major is pretty cool though. For one final project, I'm making a comic book, for another, I'm putting the finishing touches on a short story, and for my English Lit 2 class my prof's letting me do my final paper on the Sgt. Pepper's album (instead of some boring poem like everyone else)

Shit could be worse!

Colin_C., Wednesday, 25 April 2007 02:47 (eighteen years ago)

I am old and in college (again) picking up a third major - a certificate in nursing. In 2 1/2 years I will be able to take the boards and hopefully pass to become an R.N. I'm currently taking prerequisites for the nursing program I'm in (physiology, sociology and biomedical ethics). REALLY envying the idea of a creative writing major!

Sara R-C, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 03:07 (eighteen years ago)

I am really getting ready to graduate. I'm seirously going to miss all the comfort and friends and lack of financial worries, but the homework is just too much, I spend hours fantasizing about travel instead of doing it nowadays.

Maria, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 03:15 (eighteen years ago)

sara that's awesome, though! i always thought if i ever feel the need to go back for something that will actually get me jobs, it will be nursing or med lab tech. blood diamonds, baby.

tehresa, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 03:48 (eighteen years ago)

Thanks tehresa! I hope I don't hate it... I'm taking out loans to pay for school. That being said, I adore the other students in my cohort (there are a total of 30 of us that will go through the program together). And yeah - it will be nice to have a job where there are many options and schedules available. You should do it if you want to!

Sara R-C, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 04:48 (eighteen years ago)

undergrad for about 2 more wks (tho i have nothing to do until then)

impudent harlot, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 05:41 (eighteen years ago)

nursing is A+++, especially since you can get a job pretty much anywhere and practically name your price. the country/world is in dire need of nurses. plus, you're not-so-secretly in charge

river wolf, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 05:54 (eighteen years ago)

Am I the oldest? Well, I have to distinguish myself somehow.

I have also (likely) been to more colleges than anyone. Five so far. I like collecting credits.

aimurchie, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 06:15 (eighteen years ago)

i've been to four, maybe i should finish up at a different school just to spite u

A B C, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 06:19 (eighteen years ago)

hello, I'm an annoying undergrad.

Roz, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 06:25 (eighteen years ago)

Do it ABC!
Maybe we should trade colleges!
(You might not like my major, or my GPA.)

aimurchie, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 07:55 (eighteen years ago)

I think college is becoming more and more something you have to do, whether or not you are particularly interested in learning/your major, and I think that is kind of detrimental to the atmosphere. But then again it means people who care a little look really great and stand out so it's acceptable. To keep you out of the unemployment stats.

The fact that I can go back to pre-college maria threads, when I was posting from my third year makes college seem a long way distant.

Ed, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 08:31 (eighteen years ago)

Sophomore at Rutgers. I'm actually trying to write a paper on "Raging Bull" as I type this. It's not working.

I love it though.

Stevie D, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 20:37 (eighteen years ago)

I took the last two years off to work but I will be a freshman at UNC Chapel Hill this fall (assuming I actually get off my ass and send in my deposit before the end of the month).

despite the posts on this thread, I am looking forward to it.

bernard snowy, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 20:46 (eighteen years ago)

I don't know what Facebook is and I don't want to know.

admrl, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 20:48 (eighteen years ago)

Hello, creative writing majors. What a load of shit, right? It's like paying someone lots of money to give you a reading list and say, 'This is it. Oh yeah, you're gonna be great now.' Except a lot of people don't read the books or just aren't cut out for brooding and flimsy deadlines. So it isn't that good.

lolz, this is why I am not a English major of any sort. That and being a slow as shit writer.

Curt1s Stephens, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 22:46 (eighteen years ago)

better catch-all major: history or English?

milo z, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 23:14 (eighteen years ago)

im an english major and i hate the fucks who major in english because they cant find anything else

max, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 23:39 (eighteen years ago)

I wrote "a English major" instead of "an English major," wtf college has made my grammar go to shit.

Curt1s Stephens, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 23:40 (eighteen years ago)

Good catch-all = poly sci/government.

HI DERE, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 23:40 (eighteen years ago)

I'm talking "I'm 27, I've had six majors... fuckit English it is."

milo z, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 23:52 (eighteen years ago)

guyz my thesis is going to be trying to prove my hypothesis that tree species most stunted by a climatologically-anomalous two-day early April freeze in Northwest Arkansas this year have a more southerly mean geographic range and are therefore less acclimated to freezes than the ones that survived. It's kinda conceptually simple but I will be analyzing remotely-sensed differential NDVI datasets to identify areas the most and least stunted by the freeze (NDVI indicates healthy vegetative intensity -- patches of stunted trees will appear darker in a high-resolution satellite NDVI image), georectify these images to a map projection, delineate these areas on a GPS device, go and identify the species, consult with botanists or probably some other grad students from the ag/bio department who want to work on something similar, and then use GIS to do some extremely unpleasant spatial analysis of the ranges of the tree species in question. Ultimately it could be used to map what areas of forest are most suspectible to wild climatic fluctuations (which, of course, there will be more of).

but that's the next two semesters. for now I have to worry about finishing 3 projects before next Thursday.

iiiijjjj, Thursday, 26 April 2007 00:06 (eighteen years ago)

I've got two papers due in 18 hours.

I have not started either.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Thursday, 26 April 2007 00:18 (eighteen years ago)

better catch-all major: history or English?

I'm a liberal studies major.

Casuistry, Thursday, 26 April 2007 00:18 (eighteen years ago)

Mostly because pretty much every department/field of study pisses me off (except maybe Math) (I am probably going to be a Math minor just to keep my blood pressure down).

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Thursday, 26 April 2007 00:28 (eighteen years ago)

I wanted to major in Pop Culture at Bowling Green. But that would have involved living in Kentucky.

milo z, Thursday, 26 April 2007 00:28 (eighteen years ago)

Addressing everyone:

How are the concerts that your programming board puts on? Because ours fucking SUCK. We have, like, ONE concert a year, and it's this big festival right before finals week (called RutgersFest, originally enough) and this year they have Hawthorne Heights (eew), The Roots (cool), and.... wait for it... Everclear. Last year it was Ginuwine, Common, and OK GO.

: |

And it's funny, coz OK GO really doens't have a big fan base... all the indie kids think they're dumb and stupid and all the other kids don't even really know who they are (this was before the treadmill video, but does it really make a difference?). At least get someone with FANS, jeez.

And then when I went down to FL for spring break, my friends and I went to the bowling alley in the student union ant FSU, and they had posters for fuckin like of Montreal and The Decemberists and DIPLO!! DIPLO! (well technically Diplo was at an immediately local venue, but FREE ADMISSION w/ a student ID, wtf). So yeah I'm really mad we never ever get good bands ever.

Curt1s Stephens, Thursday, 26 April 2007 17:41 (eighteen years ago)

university concert festival packages now always remind me of when Penn State (I think it was Penn State) booked Sonic Youth to headline theirs three years ago, and there was this student newspaper article about how all the freshmen they interviewed hadn't heard of them before and were complaining like "yeah I just think we pay good money to be here, maybe they could have bothered to get a band we've heard of you know?" and the article called them "underground punk" or something and it was just a total ROFLBROTHEL

College freshman Rachel Aresty, a member of the online group, said she has never heard of Sonic Youth, a group which opened for artist George Clinton at the 1995 Spring Fling concert.

"This is our first year at Penn; I feel like it's all hyped up," Aresty said. "Cornell has Snoop Dogg -- why can't we get someone good like that?"

iiiijjjj, Thursday, 26 April 2007 18:01 (eighteen years ago)

There's just so much wrong with what she said.

Oh well - we have the Wrens and Sondre Lerche. That's fine by me!

Nathan, Thursday, 26 April 2007 18:08 (eighteen years ago)

I wanted to major in Pop Culture at Bowling Green. But that would have involved living in Kentucky.

Hell of a long commute when the school is in northwestern Ohio.

jaymc, Thursday, 26 April 2007 18:10 (eighteen years ago)

I went to a small liberal arts school in Michigan. The only bands that came to our school were a couple Christian-rock bands I'd never heard of booked by the organization of Christian students. People talked fondly of when Ani DiFranco had graced the campus with her presence in like 1994.

jaymc, Thursday, 26 April 2007 18:12 (eighteen years ago)

pretty much the year after i left someone started Frid4y Night R0ck Club, which booked small indie bands and had FREE KEGS paid for by the college.

those fucks.

river wolf, Thursday, 26 April 2007 18:22 (eighteen years ago)

Oberlin since I've been there (notables here):
03-04
- Peaches (at a good time for Peaches)
- Peanut Butter Wolf
- Jackie-o-Motherfucker
- Deerhoof
- Acid Mothers Temple
- Bobby Conn

04-05
- Blonde Redhead
- Gravy Train!!!
- Kanye, etc.
- the Blow (awesome house party)

05-06
- Cat Power
- Sleepytime Gorilla Museum
- Old Time Relijun
- NNCK
- Wooden Wand and the Vanishing Voice
- Lichens
- The Punks (LOL)
- Excepter
- Nautical Almanac
- Skeletons (don't count in a way, they went to Oberlin)
- The Blow (again)
-

06-07 (not there 07 but i know what's going on)
- Gang Gang Dance
- Wolf Eyes
- Bobby Conn
- Big A little a (who were fucking awesome yeah!)
- Brightblack Morning Light
- the Juan MacLean
- another group or two?

overall, a pretty good job for the concert board. and that doesn't include program board, who've brought genghis tron, the books, and a shitload of awful reggae groups.

the table is the table, Thursday, 26 April 2007 21:22 (eighteen years ago)

we dont get big concerts at my school, mostly just smaller LA bands like silver daggers, kind hearts and coronets abe vigoda, and best of all ZOLAR FUCKING X who ruled. (all those bands brought by the radio station BTW; our programming board doesnt do a goddamn bit of work)

max, Thursday, 26 April 2007 21:27 (eighteen years ago)

we had naughty by nature my fresh year

deej, Thursday, 26 April 2007 21:30 (eighteen years ago)

It obv. varies from school to school, but most of the time the quality of the shows booked just relies on whether the folks with good taste are the type to give a shit and get somewhat involved in campus life.

Often having one of the 5-10 votes on who the activities board books involves little more effort than showing up at some basement for half an hour and putting your name on a list.

I mean, I can never be bothered, but still.

Freshman year, when I was at Carbondale, we had Dave Chapelle come like a few episodes into the first season of the show. This, thank god, was right before any of the annoying-ass catchphrases attacked our nation's college campuses like a plague.

Oh wait, I see now that jaymc.xls already addressed this. SORRYS.

nickalicious, Thursday, 26 April 2007 21:43 (eighteen years ago)

Stevie we have one big concert a year and I'm never that excited about it - actually, ours is tonight, and I'm not going because it's Thursday, which is NOT the fucking weekend yet. I'd actually like to go, but I have an absolutely mandatory class presentation tonight. I'm sure it's cheaper on a Thursday, though.

There are a couple concerts a year that the radio station puts on, but I only went to one in the fall, the one they had a couple weeks ago was on a Monday. A MONDAY! Again, mandatory class thing, for the exact same class, which happens to be the one I hate the most. Would it be so hard to schedule a concert on a Friday or Saturday? My school is way too small.

Sorry for the vitriol, I'm exhausted and a little annoyed at all the fun I'm missing for the sake of a subject I don't even like but need as the last course for my major.

Maria, Thursday, 26 April 2007 21:45 (eighteen years ago)

I'm in lol college too. But i don't have anything remotely as great as an activities board or whatever. People just come to their classes and get the fuck out once they're over. Which is prolly one of the reasons why i've stopped going to the classes.

Jibe, Thursday, 26 April 2007 21:51 (eighteen years ago)

admittedly, when i was doing most of the booking for the board, i skipped class a lot. when the punks came and then excepter came a few days later, i didn't go to class at all.

the table is the table, Thursday, 26 April 2007 22:11 (eighteen years ago)

Oh Jeuseus I sure adore some Sleepytime Gorilla Museum.

Abbott, Thursday, 26 April 2007 22:41 (eighteen years ago)

The Thermals put on a great show.

Buffalo Tom were one of the best shows I've ever seen surprisingly.

I was on the program board when I was at NYU but I can't remember what we brought to campus. I was mostly drunk at that time.

Oh Jeuseus I sure adore some Sleepytime Gorilla Museum.

i was almost an econ minor. then this shitface gave me a B- in his class because I wrote a paper on Bolivia's cocaine trade-- a subject he wasn't fond of-- despite the fact that the paper was well-written and all my other grades were great. i really liked his class, too: Economic Development in Latin America. endlessly interesting.

well, it was that and the fact that oberlin's econ dept. is full of pervs.

the table is the table, Friday, 27 April 2007 14:26 (eighteen years ago)

web marketing sucks dick dude, especially in NYC. expect to make 29k and then get laid off 1 day before you're able to collect unemployment benefits.

i firmly believe this will happen hence the consistent freelancing. a dude making his $$ off writing can't afford to get too comfortable in any position: if it's gone you're belly up unless you've got a backup.

and hey 29k is twice what i'm making now at a 40/week hourly spot, so even if it's only for a few months i'll have time to sock away an unemployment fund.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Wednesday, 16 April 2008 23:45 (seventeen years ago)

I wouldn't bother with your work's bartender training. Anyone can get TABC certified with a short class (and all wait/bar staff are supposed to be) - all that is is "don't serve the drunk guy another three shots, or you're fucked."

The training itself will be pretty irrelevant anywhere else you go - they either want actual experience bartending, or else they'll want to train you in their system (or have you work your way up to the bar there).

My undergraduate university history goes:

2002-4: Computer Science
[DROPS OUT]
2004-6: Psychology
[CHANGES DEGREE DIRECTION]
2006-8: Philosophy

and now I'm currently wrapping up my dissertation, oh yeah. Well, by wrapping up I mean I still have another 2,500 words or so to go, but yeah. And then I have an exam for a Wittgenstein class that I learned very little from, oh yeah. That week after my dissertation is due and before the exam will have to be used well.

I wouldn't be going to the graduation if I weren't the first in my family to go to university, but they're all excited and I can't say no. It's so expensive. And fully of silly and mildly distasteful formalities. I've already spent £70 on the graduation fee (what's up with THAT? Passing my classes isn't enough) and garden party tickets (again, for the excited family), and still have to get a gown and a kilt, and photos. I've somehow managed to get through all of that time without having a job, so who knows what I'll do between now and having the means to do a Masters.

congrats to all the graduates!

I've got one more year to go before I get my M.P.A., and then it's no more college for me for all time, thank god.

(until I fail and then inevitably try to get a Ph.D somewhere lol)

a year and a half 'till my cap n' gown... lol college is boring at the moment, esp. my anthrolology class.

anthrolology

Oh man, now every time I process something for that department I'm going to have to resist the temptation to rename it.

I'm an undergrad, English Literature and German... don't graduate until 2011 though due to my year in Germany the year after next.

i should really be posting to ilx right now

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 7 May 2008 18:19 (seventeen years ago)

If there's anything I loathe, it is a group project. Oral presentations also suck.

I am supposed to be working on an oral presentation, with a partner, for tomorrow night. 15-20 minutes, graded on "completeness, accuracy, and creativity."

Total points for the project: TWO

Sara R-C, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 19:02 (seventeen years ago)

Seriously, there are more criteria than points!

Sara R-C, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 19:02 (seventeen years ago)

the only thing worse than a group project is an oral group presentation/project

Mr. Que, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 19:03 (seventeen years ago)

Yep. I can't recall ever having a tolerable or even educational group work experience. Is this stuff just as bad at most schools, even the nice ones which would presumably have a higher ratio of bright kids who wanna get shit done?

BigLurks, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 19:11 (seventeen years ago)

Or am I completely RONG about non-shitty state schools?

BigLurks, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 19:12 (seventeen years ago)

is this the thread where i say I JUST TURNED IN MY LAST SEMINAR PAPER AND AM DONE DONE DONE WITH MY MA wooo

adam, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 19:52 (seventeen years ago)

YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ENBB, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 19:53 (seventeen years ago)

I've only done two group projects at university - the first one was really good, we were uber-keen first years and worked really hard at it, and pwned all the other groups who did presentations on the same day. The second was also quite good, though we did less stuff together as it was written rather than presented. Having said that both were fairly positive experiences, I still don't like the idea of working in groups...

Anyway, I should be working: 8 days left!

emil.y, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 19:54 (seventeen years ago)

Also - yay for Adam! Exclamation marks agogo!

emil.y, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 19:54 (seventeen years ago)

adam, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 19:55 (seventeen years ago)

Death to group work. It has given me nothing but fits this semester.

Last paper of undergraduate college career will be turned in next Wednesday at noon. Drinking begins 12:01.

ENBB, Thursday, 15 May 2008 13:18 (seventeen years ago)

CMU. Technically i haven't even applied yet, but I am visiting, meeting with the programme director and other faculty and have been asked to supply a resume so I am treating it as an interview.

BBC NEWS | UK | L0IUS J4GGER MAKES TRIUMPHANT RETURN

J0rdan S., Thursday, 29 May 2008 22:01 (seventeen years ago)

i can indeed confirm, although the most OTM bit in the article is the bit where someone says "This isn't news". in the context of the paper, a discussion of lyric as a balance between the definitions of something that is sung versus an artist's personal expression of feelings, comparing a more overtly poetic, personal piece such as raleigh's with the almost complete submission to populism and sound ahead of sense in the winehouse was entirely fathomable, and i didn't think "OMG WAU" or "ALERT THE PRESSES" when i saw the question (i mean who the fuck did). i only chose it because i didn't fancy some of the others so much.

I'm officially flunking out ((again!) because of incompletes.
And I am lol old! I have five incompletes....and each prof is really eager for me to finish.
I have a really hard time finishing stuff.

I just have a mental break ...I mean, every single course, I have completed EXCEPT for the final paper, or the two final papers. And I have done it so often that I have five Incompletes, which turn into IF's - and then you get kicked out of school.

So now I am negotiating with Profs. , and they are enthusiastic about giving me a grade. My GPA is 1.6 or something at this point.

The thing is, I have done the work - I'm so mental that I keep revising it or something. I have to just finish the papers.
Seriously, I always do all of the work right up until the end of the semester and then I stall.

I'm basically the worst student ever - but I was getting a lot of grants before I started stopping.

I hope this makes all other lol college types feel better.

It doesn't figure highly in the classics curriculum.

Which is why, perhaps, that Cambridge classics student L0u1s J4gg3r didn't quite manage to get a grip of the jelly wrestling competition rules at an end-of-exams celebration.

The 21-year-old graduate wore the requisite bikini, jumped into the pool and gave quite a good account of himself in the grappling department, easily overcoming his rather more svelte opponent.

I think I was a bit like that in first year at college but not so bad, just when ppl came to my house I'd play britney and laurie anderson (BIG phase) as well as all the old favourites. I flipped "Do Something" backwards on audacity, it was a hit.

I know, right?, Wednesday, 27 August 2008 21:26 (seventeen years ago)

i fucking love do something

no one say challops ever again

Isn't poptimism just consumer-level pomo applied to contemporary pop culture? I'd think it'd be old hat in a college course.

My classes so far are pretty cool. European Novel (a bunch of obscure stuff - only well-known novels are Don Quixote + Sentimental Education. Other stuff is like Roth's Radizkty's March + Schulz's Crocodile Street), Media + the Election (which isn't brilliant, but if I'm gonna obsess over the election I might as well get credits for it), a Creative Non-Fiction class, and finishing up my senior thesis.

Mordy, Saturday, 30 August 2008 19:51 (seventeen years ago)

We're reading Don Quixote. Worst discussion group ever. The big lecture was pretty fantastic, though!

Tape Store, Saturday, 30 August 2008 19:53 (seventeen years ago)

guys i ran into tape store on campus the other day lol

J0rdan S., Saturday, 30 August 2008 19:54 (seventeen years ago)

Cool. We had to read the whole thing in prep for the first day of class - such a freakin long book.

Mordy, Saturday, 30 August 2008 19:55 (seventeen years ago)

I'm not sure my grad school is lol grad school but we did have our pre-start informal ice cream social yesterday! And a battery of language placement test next week. Eep.

Casuistry, Saturday, 30 August 2008 19:58 (seventeen years ago)

I gotta apply to grad school this semester.

Mordy, Saturday, 30 August 2008 20:02 (seventeen years ago)

Make sure to go to one where you get free ice cream.

Casuistry, Saturday, 30 August 2008 20:04 (seventeen years ago)

LOL!

I know, right?, Saturday, 30 August 2008 20:07 (seventeen years ago)

my grad program boozes us up on a regular basis. and feeds us meditteranean food and pizza. the fridge is stocked with beer and white wine.

it is a writing program, but really. it's kind of awesomely silly.

the table is the table, Saturday, 30 August 2008 20:10 (seventeen years ago)

i'm all registered for classes! NO TURNING BACK

impudent harlot, Saturday, 30 August 2008 20:18 (seventeen years ago)

There's not much else to do in a writing program other than drink, is there?

Casuistry, Saturday, 30 August 2008 20:28 (seventeen years ago)

well, drink, write, repeat.

i'm about to fail my first lol major test :(

Tape Store, Wednesday, 24 September 2008 03:09 (seventeen years ago)

Hey Tape Store. Graham Hall, 1992.

5 years from now, you won't think twice about this test.

Pleasant Plains, Wednesday, 24 September 2008 03:44 (seventeen years ago)

lol college is currently ;_; college

Abbott, Wednesday, 24 September 2008 18:55 (seventeen years ago)

Thanks for the comforting words, PP. I think I knew most of the test, but I really screwed up my timing. So I think I lost a lot of points (btw, Graham Hall is being renovated this year, i think). And I'm sorry Abbott, but I think the '5 years' line probably works with you, too (even if it's not a test that's making school ;_;).

Tape Store, Wednesday, 24 September 2008 19:08 (seventeen years ago)

My 'five years from now'...would have been in 2002...my second year of college. I'm still in college.

Abbott, Wednesday, 24 September 2008 19:10 (seventeen years ago)

undergrad

Abbott, Wednesday, 24 September 2008 19:10 (seventeen years ago)

what grad am I even under these days?

And fudging one major test will not hurt you at all, Stape Tore. Esp the first test of a semester - lets you know exactly what you need to do on/for the next tests to get where it is you want to be. (You can use a calculator to comfort you.)

Abbott, Wednesday, 24 September 2008 19:11 (seventeen years ago)

Sure feels crappy, tho, I feel ya.

Next year I'll be at the Sciences Po, which I guess gives me even less reason to post.

Oooh, i just had an interview with them this morning! How easy is it to get to Sc Po from abroad?? Are you an exchange student or will you be a Sc Po student?

has anyone here in/recently in college ever been fortunate enough to be directed/allowed to livetweet class by the prof?

as a teacher this sounds to me like the most backwards-ass idea about what to do in the classroom and what to do when you're sharing space with a bunch of intelligent interested supposedly informed (if they did the reading) people that i can only hope the global warming catastrophe comes quick so that we run out of power to run smartphones

also, how loser-ish would have it have been had i corrected this jackass econ teacher who said something about Britney Spears finally quitting music?

"Uh, professor, first off, Britney released her greatest album yet in December, and more importantly, she's working on another album right now that's supposedly going to be even better. OK?"

― jaymc, Wednesday, August 27, 2008 8:14 PM (6 years ago) Bookmark Flag Post Permalink

Yes, Mizzou. I'm dropping that Econ class, I think. It's just a one hour lecture that tries to connect journalism and economy. It was so scattered and pointless...added nothing to my normal econ class.

the less blowing-minds you do in college, the easier it will be for you to look back on freshman year without being incredibly embarrassed
