Last night I had a dream where my housemate and I had hott hott sex. I don't particularly fancy my housemate, not because she isn't attractive (she is) but more because she's a housemate and a friend. I think it's probably best for all concerned if I don't say anything to her, although when I bumped into her coming out of the shower this morning I didn't really know where to look.

1) Have you ever had a dream about sleeping with someone inappropriate?
2) Did it change the way you thought about them?
3) Did you tell them? How did they take it?

(I do realise this all isn't very important, but my housemate has rather taken over my brain at the moment, and I'm intrigued as to how other people react(ed))

Ha ha ha ha ha, oh god, yes.

My reaction has mainly been "err, what was that about?" Sometimes I get a bit red-faced around the person for a bit, but it wears off. Dreams aren't supposed to make sense. It doesnt' mean anything.

Oh, I know it doesn't mean anything, but that doesn't change the fact that I've got the image of my housemate's fantastic breasts bouncing around in front of me, and it's most distracting.

I don't get this -you either do or you don't. And you obviously do!

What I mean is, if we met randomly in a pub or something I would have no compunction about trying my luck. But we're not, so (conscious) thoughts of rumpy-pumpy haven't entered my brain before.

I had a dream once about a bandmate. We were kissing. It was tender and passionate, but not full sex so perhaps not the same thing as this thread is asking. I was shocked, and I thought it maybe did mean something. I told him about it, one drunken night. Now we're married.

If I have sexy dreams I rarely remember them. I do remember a couple of dreams a night it seems and they are usually interesting. Doesn't whether or not you remember them have to do with waking in the middle of a REM cycle? Perhaps if you sleep soundly it is common not to remember them.

2) Did it change the way you thought about them? I think it's rather the other way around. If I dream of teh hott sex with you, it means my thinking has already changed.

3) Did you tell them? How did they take it? I have, in certain instances, and they took it varyingly, from mildly alarmed to flattered.

having great dreams all the time would just get annoying before too long - you'd become more and more frustrated with reality. bad/wrong dreams can at least offer re-assurance that things in your life could be worse. i have both in equal measure i think, but most of my dreams are just sequences of surreal yet rather mundane experiences that go-nowhere. usually when something good is about to happen that's the time i wake up.

I can do that sometimes, CJ - or, at least, I can if I recognise the fact that I'm dreaming. It's called lucid dreaming. Quite freaky, but once you get the hang of it, it's amazing.

Can't decide what to dream about before I go to sleep though. It would be awesome if I could. Unless I wake up without fulling reaching consciousness and then drop off to sleep. I often get lucid dreams then.

CJ, you're undoubtedly odd, but I can control dreams to a certain extent. If I have really scary or really boring dreams, I have enough consciousness while dreaming to just alter them, kind of like pushing a boat off a pier or putting an oar in. I won't bother constantly steering them, but if it's going in the wrong direction, I'll change it.

Yes - I can do this, but I find that the ability comes and goes. When it's working I will use it as an opportunity to think something over that requires a bit of extra thought before the next day. When it works it's great, but it seems to happen less often now. If I wake from an enjoyable dream I find that I can will myself back into it sometimes.

Unfortunately I am currently in a period of running through my repertoire of unpleasant dreams - these almost always feature a train journey where I have too much luggage/lose important bits of luggage/get separated from people I am travelling with/miss my stop/miss the train altogether/someone I am travelling with falls ill - or any combination of these. I can't steer or control these, I'm afraid.

I had a weird run of recurring dreams where i'd be doing all sorts of strange (and non sexual) things with Martyn Ware and Ian Craig Marsh. I was on nicotine patches at the time so i suspect they may have had something to do with it.

Waking up after dreaming you were awake and at work is only good if it's 2.30am or similar. If you're woken by one of those dreams half an hour before you have to get up anyway, it's the most annoying thing in the whole world.

That wasn't a dream, you were definitely sleep sandwich-making.

My favourite dreams are the dreamtrain dreams. Sometimes they are stress dreams, but other times, I am just catching a train in one city and transfer in a different city and get off in a third city entirely! And sometimes there are useful lines which go directly to my house which don't really exist. And other times there are mysterious lines that go nowhere near anywhere I know. It's kind of like the NYC subway and the London Tube and the Paris metro and all of British Rail rolled into one. It's stressful if I'm trying to get somewhere in the dream. But when I can manage to lucid dream in dreamtrainworld, I can go to the most extraordinary places.

Mine was:

I was trying to hawk a pop act and spieled a tale about how most bands are sold to a big label conglomerate.

Next thing I know, I'm managing their heavy metal label, and chairing a lecture about the development cycle of a band, from the 'first session' to the 'meganame'.

When I woke up, thought to myself "ah all bol, really" but on reflection all of the stages I recounted actually made sense.

No sleeping with anyone was involved...

Of course I read books in my dreams!

Sometimes they're real books (though I haven't actually read The Road To Reality which I was reading in the dream last night), sometimes they're completely made up books whose narrative my subconscious provides. Those are fantastic - I wake up wanting to run to my notebook and jot down the plot.

Or better, when I'm listening to music in my dreams. And sometimes it is the most amazing piece of music I've ever heard. If I'm lucky, I can wake up and get to a guitar or the computer and write it down. But the worst thing in the world is if I get distracted on my way there, and then the beautiful music is gone forever. :-(

I think the strangest dream I ever had was about the end of the world. The physics didn't work right - like if you looked in a lake, your reflection would spread out across the entire lake. And sound didn't travel properly, every footstep sounded muffled or came a microsecond too late. It was incredibly detailed and colourful and vivid. And strangely I wasn't scared, but the entire world was panicking.
